The makers unveiled the trailer of the film on social media on Thursday and one can't help but notice the striking similarity the film has with Daniel Craig starrer Knives Out.

The movie also features a strong ensemble cast featuring Ram Kapoor, Rahul Bose, Neeraj Kabi, Amrita Puri, Shahana Goswami, Niki Walia, Dipannita Sharma, Shashank Arora, Prajakta Koli, Danesh Razvi, Ishika Mehra and Madhav Deval in pivotal roles. This is Anu Menon and Vidya Balan's second film together. Speaking about her experience of working on Neeyat and returning to the big screen, Vidya Balan said, “What I enjoy most about being an actor is the opportunity to live the life of a different person with every character I play. In Neeyat, Detective Mira Rao is not your everyday, classic detective which is what made it great fun for me. Also, not only did I get a chance to sink my teeth into an unusual and quirky character but I also got to work with a powerful set of co-actors. This film is my second outing with Anu after Shakuntala Devi and my fourth collaboration with Vikram, Abundantia Entertainment, and Prime Video and I can only say that I have had the most amazing time working with them to make this film. Last but not least, I’m supremely delighted to be back in theatres with the release of Neeyat and am waiting with bated breath for audience reactions."

Neeyat marks Vidya Balan’s return to theatres after her successful digital stint with three super hit films - Shakuntala Devi (2020) to the critically hailed Sherni (2021) and finally the impactful blockbuster Jalsa (2022).

Neeyat will release across theatres worldwide on July 7th.

Yearender 2021: The best performances of the year

In 2012, filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh and writer Advaita Kala created the iconic character Bob Biswas in the unforgettable film 'Kahaani'. Played by the versatile Saswata Chatterjee, the film was not centred around him but on Vidya Balan but despite limited screen presence, Chatterjee made his character- a deadly assassin one of the most iconic characters of Hindi cinema.

In 2021, as Ghosh's daughter Diya Annapurna Ghosh makes her debut as a film director with a spin-off story on the iconic character in ZEE5's 'Bob Biswas', she makes him mellow, humanizing the killer complete with a wife and two kids.

Featuring Abhishek Bachchan as Bob Biswas, who once killed mercilessly, the new film delves more into Bob's personal life and how he wants to change himself for his family. The film opens with Bob getting discharged from the hospital after being in a comatose state for 8 years. His wife Mary (Chitrangada Singh) and young song Benny (Ronith Arora) take him home which he has no recollection of. Bob also has a daughter Mini (Samara Tijori) who is preparing for a medical entrance. A deadly assassin at one point in time, Bob, we are told, met with an accident and now has lost his memory. Even as he and his family want to start afresh, Bob is unwittingly embroiled in a nexus of drug mafia, corrupt policemen, and shady henchmen. While his memory is sketchy, he still has the skills to kill his target in point-blank range and walk out nonchalantly.

After a spate of killings which includes the murder of a drug dealer (Purab Kohli), investigative office Indira Verma (Tina Desai) takes on the case- trying to put together the missing pieces.

Bachchan's Bob Biswas is rather subtle and very confused. He isn't as cold-blooded or eerie as Chatterjee's Bob Biswas. Neither is he an intriguing character anymore. A lot of time is spent on Bob the family man- which may or may not is needed to define a character who became iconic for his unusual demeanour and a rather surprising career choice. The 2021 version of Bob Biswas is surprisingly dull, and mellowed and the story is less exhilarating than the 2012 film.

Comparisons are inevitable considering both 'Kahaani' and Bob Biswas is remembered to date. For a debutante, Diya Annapurna Ghosh delivers a decent film that is slick and well made. But she also takes on a big gamble by narrating the story of a popular character.

Perhaps the success of Bob Biswas in 'Kahaani' was due to the fact it was a mysterious character who would emerge out of nowhere, kill with an evil smile plastered on his face and nonchalantly disappear.

While making a standalone film, humanising him makes him normal, and naturally rather unexciting.

Abhishek Bachchan plays the role well. As Bob Biswas he is convincing but it's a huge burden to be playing a character that Chatterjee already has made so popular. If one can look past Chatterjee's performance (which is difficult, naturally) Bachchan delivers a solid performance of a man confused, conflicted and rather menacing. It's unlike any other character he has played on screen and Bachchan delivers. So does Chitrangada Singh who plays his wife, completely in awe with the mysterious man.

Other actors who stand out are the veteran Paran Bandopadhyay who plays Kali Da- Bob's supplier of guns and overall secret keeper and debutant Samara Tijori as the conflicted, hassled Mini.

'Bob Biswas' as a stand-alone film is good- provided one doesn't compare it to the hugely successful 'Kahaani'. It tries hard to create an impression with a fresh story but the burden of the hugely successful hit is hard to shrug off and that's where it crumbles.

'Bob Biswas' is streaming on ZEE5.

'Bob Biswas' review: Abhishek Bachchan turns the deadly assassin into a family man

When dabbling in the ever-evolving topic of middle-aged women in films, a funny response by Halle Berry on Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘Mean Tweets Live’ segment crops up in my head. It was 2015 and someone had tweeted about her then 49 YO breasts that went like this – “Halle Berrie’s boobs are lopsided (sic)” – to which, the actress had replied, quite nonchalant by the public attack on her supposedly sagging bosom, “Well, when they’re real, that happens.” Six years on, that is precisely the case. Female actors are, thankfully, no longer put on a pedestal when they are young and thriving and unceremoniously escorted out the back door, when they are not. The new-age ‘old’ women in cinema are fierce, unabashedly accepting of their bodies and the inevitable transition they must endure over time. They are not their lip jobs and liposuctions; they are here to render one career-defining performance after another.

Perhaps it is this newfound confidence in embracing what was (once) generationally considered wrath of nature that led Academy Award-winning actress Kate Winslet to say no to digital tummy tucks for her monster hit ‘Mare of Easttown’. Crow’s feet? Laugh lines? Stretched bellies from birthing kids? No problem.

Winslet’s contemporaries, too, are defying the age barrier that’s been rampant in films with sheer talent. Take ‘Noctural Animals’ actress Amy Adams for instance. True, her ambitious project ‘The Woman in the Window’ faced harsh criticism for, well, being a bad film but with Disney’s ‘Disenchanted’ lead Giselle in tow and the high school drama ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ in the pipeline, who’s to say if 2022 will mark her seventh Oscar nomination. Interestingly, Adams’ first nomination for ‘JuneBag’ was back in 2005 and she was only 31 years of age: the pink of her health, ageists may say. And although time has turned her into a raddled version (according to conventionalists) of her once pretty self, there is not an iota of doubt that 46 YO Adams is tailor-made for an Academy honor, the question is when.

Talking of 2021 releases, it is safe to say that Rosamund Pike’s sharp bob, pantsuits and sass made quite the entrance in this year’s Netflix sleeper hit ‘I Care A Lot’. The actress – then in her 30s – had become the poster child of troubled prettiness with her distinct act as Amy Dunne in the 2014 release ‘Gone Girl’ and exudes ghastly charm and gravitas with the same intensity in her latest outing as she had seven years ago. If anything, Pike is carving a niche for herself in this genre that few dare to tread along.

Agreed, clicking pictures with best friend Penelope Cruz – another stunning actor who refuses to slow down with age like it’s a nonexistent phenomenon – is second nature to Salma Hayek, but when she is in front of the camera for whatever role is offered to her… Boy is she on fire! Her pairing with Owen Wilson in this year’s ‘Bliss’ may have been an odd artistic choice but Hayek as a kooky crack head was a delight to watch, to say the least. If her thick Spanish accent, like ‘Modern family’ alumna Sofia Vergara’s, could not jeopardize her career in Hollywood, age certainly stands no chance.

‘The Crown’ royalty Olivia Colman may not be distractingly beautiful like Cruz or Hayek but what she is, is mind-bogglingly talented. There are very few actresses in Hollywood, or any other parts of the world for that matter, who can stand shoulder-to-shoulder in acting prowess with the legendary Anthony Hopkins but Olivia Colman is no plain Jane—in that regard—and she does what comes naturally to her: acting. Greys or not.

Similarly, the Streeps, McDormands, Mirrens, Portmans and Blanchetts of showbiz are far too busy touching the zenith of their respective careers to care about nagging remarks about stepping away from milestone acting jobs, and what for. In an industry notorious for massaging the male ego and where pay parity is an open joke, it is refreshing to see women break free from the shackles of ageism and pave the path for themselves and the younger school of actresses to come.

BOLLYWOOD’S NOT BEHIND

Historically, the Indian film industry has struggled with the PYT syndrome for as long as I can remember—Pretty Young Thing, that is. In recent years, however, it has started to separate raw talent from preconceived notions of beauty. In modern India, quite recently, a heavyset woman well in her 40s like Vidya Balan shoulders a big-budgeted film ironically about capturing a tigress, titled ‘Sherni’. It is almost hilarious that Balan, who was once mocked and rebuked for gaining weight, is now regarded as a national (art) treasure.

Or a Neena Gupta—who had left the whole nation gasping in unison when she had announced her pregnancy out of wedlock, back in the 80s—do what they couldn’t do when the ‘age’ was right: land a lead role. In her OTT show with daughter Masaba Gupta in 2020-21, named ‘Masaba Masaba’, Gupta echoes her suppressed emotions about not being able to make it as ‘a heroine’ in her prime and how she was reduced to a mere prop, aka ‘heroine ki saheli’. At 62, Gupta realized a fraction of that dream in a series that was otherwise meant to be her designer daughter’s acting launch pad. Times are truly ‘a changin’.

Despite the organized commotion that is the cinema industry and the plethora of issues it nurtures, encounters and fights back, a cluster of women have dared to defy age and land acting jobs strictly on their acting expertise. Thus, reiterating the fact that if the youth is your moolah, then you will be spent.

Indian stars Vidya Balan, Ekta Kapoor, Shobha Kapoor invited to Oscar Academy's Class of 2021

Bengali actor Jisshu Sengupta spoke to WION about his new film 'Shakuntala Devi', his co-star Vidya Balan, working with director Anu Menon and why he feels cinema and digital space can co-exist.

Jisshu Sengupta on 'Shakuntala Devi', working with Vidya Balan and why he feels digital is the future

If Amit Masurkar's 'Newton' dealt with farce around elections, then his latest 'Sherni' slyly talks of patriarchy amid a tiger hunt in the deep jungles of Madhya Pradesh.

Featuring the incredible Vidya Balan, 'Sherni' delivers a strikingly fresh story and perspective on the rules of the jungle.

A tigress is on the prowl - attacking strays and villagers who live near the jungle. Newly appointed to the area, forest officer Vidya Vincent (Balan) not only has to capture the tiger and release it in the nearby national park area, but also deal with middlemen, local politicians and greedy hunters, who are busy proving their machismo and are quick to rebuff Vidya as she is a woman.

Challenges are in plenty for Vidya. Her boss Bansal (Brijendra Kala) is incompetent, she also had to deal with the local MLA and his opponent, both in their bid to outdo each other forget their duties towards the village. Then there is Pintu Bhaiya (Sharat Saxena) who is the alpha male and sure that only he can save the village and its people from the tigress.

It's a lonely life for Vidya at the forest. While her male colleagues unwind with a drink and Bollywood item numbers in the evenings, Vidya has a stray kitten for company in her quarters for dinner. Her husband on video call advises her to not quit, as a govt job provides the security which his private job doesn't. Her mother-in-law wants her to be dressed more like a bride than an officer on duty and keeps asking her for kids. But amid all this chaos, Vidya remains honest and diligent in her work- wanting to do the right thing for the villagers and the animal on the prowl.

Masurkar and writer Aastha Tiku provide a no-frill grim story of how man plays an active agent in destroying the ecosystem by poaching and encroaching a space that is not meant to be his. 'Sherni' provides insight into the jungle and the people who love around it and highlight the importance of maintaining an ecological balance which most humans tend to ignore. Without being too preachy, the film drives home the point well. It also takes a sly dig at patriarchy and the inherent nature of men to not take a woman in charge too seriously but it never lets the protagonist break down. Vidya Balan sheds her natural exuberance to deliver a restraint performance as a woman who knows her job and her ways around a system that has problems in plenty.

At a time when many of the makers have been called out of miscasting, Masurkar uses relatively new faces to play the locals in the film. So unlike 'Article 15' where Sayani Gupta has painted two shades dark to play a Dalit, here actress Sampa Mandal plays a feisty village woman Jyoti. The casting is far more accurate- giving a sense of authenticity to the film's narrative.

The film, though appears stretched even in its 2-hour runtime. The film meanders in the middle a bit with all characters going on a wild goose chase to look for the tiger, failing each time to capture it. Much like Newton, this film too has several moments of silences where the characters emote through the expressions and do not speak much.

'Sherni' has great camerawork by DOP Rakesh Haridas, who gives a documentary-like feel to the film as he captures the minutest creatures of the forest well. The shots of the forest provide a transition in between scenes and the night shots are stunning, where flashlights and car headlines break the monotony in the dark and dense forest.

'Sherni' works despite its slow pace because it provides for a refreshingly new story. Sans the melodrama, the film takes the viewers deep inside the jungles and tells an honest story. It has credible actors, each playing the role perfectly and its leading lady Vidya Balan, steps away from a cheerful persona to deliver a restrained performance.

'Sherni' is available on Amazon Prime Video.

'Sherni' review: Vidya Balan's new film is refreshing, real and different

‘Sunflower’, a crime-thriller comedy premiered on Zee5 on June 11 as it follows the story a residential complex and its people that promise to be modern and liberal in their approach but are far from that. Things get topsy turvy when one morning a member of the complex gets murdered and police suspect neighbours to have a hand at this. A cat and mouse chase and nervous laughs on the way, the show is led by standup comic/actor Sunil Grover with important roles played by Ranvir Shorey, Girish Kulkarni, Mukul Chadda, Shonali Nagrani, Sonal Jha and Ashish Vidyarthi.

Playing the role of a teacher in the show, Mukul happens to be the immediate neighbour to the murdered victim that police are probing. He also thus turns out to be a prime suspect for the murder. “I think the phrase crime comedy fits the description of the show. It’s set in a housing society in Mumbai and there’s been a murder. Then you have all these quirky characters in the housing society which normally is the case and how they react to one another, how they react to the fact that there has been a murder in their presence and how they react to the investigation."

“My character’s name is Dr. Ahuja and he is one of the residents of the society. He is a short tempered guy which is great for me because I have never played such a character before. It's very different from what I am in real life. He picks fights with his neighbours over petty issues and that was hilarious to play.”

On balancing seriousness and playfulness while dealing with such a tense subject as murder, Mukul said, “It is a fantastic balance to get it right where the audience is at the edge of their seat and they are laughing away to glory. It's great to have tension built up in a moment and to break it with laughter."

Sunil is the lead of the show. The show revolves a lot around his character Sonu but the show has an ensemble cast. Ranvir Shorey plays an inspector, Girish Kulkarni plays a sub-inspector and then there’s Ashish Vidyarthi. On his equation with the co-stars, Mukul said, “I met Sunil the first time when we went for the first set of readings and rehearsals and I got along with him very well. He is an extremely sweet person. In fact I remember I went for rehearsal one day and he and Ranvir were leading a scene and then I was to do some scenes with Ranvir after that so I was there early and I joined the rehearsal. Because the script is so good and I think they needed a 3rd character so I jumped into their scene and I thought I'll play that part. It was not my character. I think it was Girish’s character but I jumped in because it was just so much fun. I regret not having many scenes with him though. Maybe that happens in season 2 that I get more scenes to do with Sunil and Girish Kulkarni.”

Mukul has no knowledge of season 2 of ‘Sunflower’. When asked he quickly replied, “I have no idea. I have absolutely no information. It's just me being greedy and hoping for Season 2.”

Mukul Chadda also has a film in the lineup, ‘Sherni’ with Vidya Balan. “I can’t reveal much but Vidya plays a forest officer and the film revolves around her character. I think it explores a lot of issues but that's how Amit’s films are at some level. He takes an issue and he looks at all the surrounding issues around it. So, it explores the issues of wildlife, wildlife conservation, man-beast relationship like how the combination of wildlife affects the lives of people around it and all those related issues in a very real story of how a forest officer is going through an issue. It's a very interesting film. It's a very different kind of story telling I would say in the sense that it's a very odd thing to say without giving you more meat but I don't know how to even describe it to be honest,” divulged Mukul.

Trying to be elusive about the film’s details yet explaining, Mukul added, “There are usually some standard story tropes like the 7 story types but I dont think this fits into one of them. It's a very different storytelling style. Everyone said that Newton fits into that zone of being a different storytelling type because it didn't fit into the generic storytelling type. So, that's probably Amit’s style and I am not saying this is like Newton but I am just saying they both are similar in terms of they both don’t confine to a standard storytelling trope and that's refreshing about his work. Amit also is a great guy to work with. I do recall when I met him first, I straightaway felt that I wanted to do that role because I’ve seen his other work and then on meeting him he was just so calming in the way he was describing and honest about it that I felt drawn to the project.”

Talking about Vidya Balan, Mukul said, “She’s wonderful to work with. She’s professional and very committed to her work. When you are working on a scene with her I would forget that she’s a big star and just co-actors in the scene trying to help the scene get better.”

‘Sherni’ was shot on the border of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. “It was a place called Balaghat which is where I shot my scenes. I am sure the other scenes must have been shot in the adjoining areas or other places as well.”

Mukul Chadda was an investment banker in New York before he left it all and returned to India to pursue his passion for acting. Now many projects later, Mukul doesn’t regret moving back to India. “There are many regrets of how I would have done something differently but not for a moment do I regret the decision to quit my job and move back to India. That sometimes is relieving because you know at least this decision is the right one,” said the actor who came from a non-filmy background and has sunk his teeth deep within Indian entertainment industry.

Mukul likes all kinds of genres of films and TV and wants to experiment with it all. “When I get a new script to read or a new part to play, I am always looking at how this is different from what I have done before and if I can extend my range and do something I haven't done before."

Vidya Balan’s National Award winning performance would not have happened if Kangana Ranaut had not turned it down. Vidya received the award for her portrayal of an adult star in ‘The Dirty Picture’.

While revealing that she turned down the film, Kangana added that she could not have done the role better than Vidya who was “terrific” in the film. “The Dirty Picture, just like I always said, turned out to be so wonderful! But I don’t think I would have done it better than Vidya Balan because she was terrific in that. But yes, sometimes I feel that I didn’t see the potential in that film,” she said.

She added that ‘parallel or off-beat films’ have been her thing and added, “I have never done one of those conventional films of Rajkumar Hirani or Sanjay Leela Bhansali or even Dharma Productions, YRF or any of the Khans' films. I have done none of that but still, I’m the top leading actress who has made a name for herself. It is a case study on its own. Though I failed to see the opportunity in The Dirty Picture, I don’t regret it.”

National Handloom Day is observed every year on August 7 to recognise the contributions of the handloom weavers of the country. As the country is observing National Handloom Day on Friday, Bollywood divas Kangana Ranaut, Janhvi Kapoor and Vidya Balan took to social media to share a picture of their favourite handloom clothing from their wardrobe. The three actors took to social media to urge people to be 'vocal for local' and use more clothing made by local Indian brands. 'Queen' actor Kangana Ranaut`s team posted several pictures of the actor donning Indian handloom clothing including the one where she is seen posing with a spinning wheel. "Most of us have more than we can consume, Fashion industry has become one of the most damaging industries for our environment, new challenges call for new resolves, lets promote our own Indian organic fabric industries and preserve the planet #NationalHandloomDay," Kangana`s team tweeted. The actors further shared how choosing handloom over international brands help to elevate underprivileged weavers of the country from poverty. "When we choose Handloom we choose to elevate our poor weavers out of poverty, we choose vocal for local, we choose our Mother Earth, we choose love for every single being on this planet #NationalHandloomDay," Ranaut`s team tweeted.
