Vidya Balan's Tumhari Sulu earns Rs 14.71 crores within four days of its release

2017 has seen some incredible stories- stories that have highlighted the middle-class and its problems in the most endearing, hilarious ways. From Bareilly Ki Barfi to Shubh Mangal Saavdhan to the recent Qarib Qarib Singlle- all have had middle-class protagonists. While these films have been primarily love stories with middle-class values as a backdrop, it is Suresh Triveni’s Tumhari Sulu that scores over with its story of an ordinary housewife with extraordinary dreams.

Sulochana Dubey or Sullu ( Vidya Balan) is a regular housewife grappling with everyday mundane life. Her achievements are nothing noteworthy yet she is quite proud of them and happily flaunts them. She has an encouraging husband Ashok (Manav Kaul) who indulges almost all her whims and is always on her team and a nearly teenage son who is mostly amused by the antics of his dramatic parents.

One call from a local FM channel declaring her as the winner of a contest lands Sulu at the radio channel’s office to collect her reward. A chance encounter with her favourite RJ Anjali (Malishka) makes her meet the head of the channel, Mayra (Neha Dhupia ) and she manages to convince her that she can become the next RJ.

Naturally, Sulu is an instant hit with the listeners. Her late-night show caters to lonely hearts and Sulu in her husky, sexy voice helps them with problems related to the heart. She has a remedy for everyone, in her own unique style- be it a cocky cab driver in love with two sisters at the same time or the lonely widower who just wants to hum along with her- Sulu has the ability to connect with people across ages.

As her career soars, her personal life takes a dip as she is unable to juggle the two roles- that of a perfect housewife and another of the careerist woman- perfectly. Sulu’s supportive husband soon starts to get annoyed with her erratic working hours as he himself struggles at his decade-long comfortable job. Sulu’s son gets neglected at home and eventually gets caught in school selling adult CDs to classmates. And suddenly Sulu starts doubting herself and her ability as a homemaker and mother.

Tumhari Sulu’s high point is the simplistic story that resonates with one and all for its middle-class values and aspirations. The dreams are sometimes too big for our stature yet one never gives up easily. Sulu is a 12th fail, and is aware of her shortcomings even but yet has the zeal to attempt new things. Sulu is someone you already know in real life. She could be your next door neighbour or a relative or just like you- who wants to strive for something big and also balance her personal life while pursuing her dreams.

There are moments which will bring smiles to your faces because it is all too familiar. The car ac is not switched on too much to ‘secretly’ save fuel, the husband –wife discuss numerous business options that they could start but never do, the nagging relatives always taunt the youngest in the family to do something worthwhile in life. All these elements make the film very real.

The film, though, takes copious liberty in terms of its narrative. No media head has so much free time to indulge an aspiring applicant to rehearse and give spot audition. Getting a job is difficult; getting an interview is even tougher. But Sulu’s audition appears too easy. No one gets it so right on their first day on-air like they show in the film. Sulu has zero background in radio yet on her first day she appears like a pro.

While the first half is fun, breezy and real, the second half slowly gets melodramatic and unrealistic. I had major problems with the climax which was rather convoluted. But the glaring flaws can be ignored simply because of the pitch-perfect cast and its endearing performances.

Vidya Balan has time and again proven that if she is given a good script, she can shine and take the film forward on her own accord. Vidya’s Sulu is endearing, innocent and a whole lot of fun. She makes the ordinary housewife appear special. As her husband Ashok, Manav Kaul too delivers a fine performance and matches in every scene with Vidya. They look good together and make for a very convincing married couple. Then there is supporting cast which includes Neha Dhupia, Malishka and Vijay Maurya who are perfect in their respective roles. The conversations flow freely and things look so real that you almost feel it is happening to you.

Above all Tumhari Sulu makes the ordinary middle-class look extraordinary. Sulu will remind you of your mother who has tirelessly worked at home and at work for years without any complaint. Sulu’s problems will resonate with all working women who put in extra effort to strike a fine balance between home and work. And Tumhari Sulu will make you fall in love with Vidya Balan all over again. Because Vidya truly ‘sab kuch kar sakti hai’.

Tumhari Sulu review: Vidya Balan makes the ordinary middle-class housewife look extraordinary

It's the 21st century where women-oriented films rule the box office, Yet, there are certain people who still feel that actresses need to look a certain way to be called mainstream heroines. Vidya Balan, two-time National award-winning actress, literally has filmmakers writing roles for her where she plays the main protagonist. She is hailed for her work, her spunk and more importantly for taking up roles that no one ever thinks they can. Yet the actress is subjected to questions that are downright insulting to her stature.

Recently, during a promotional event of her upcoming film Tumhari Sulu, the actress was asked by a reporter when she would be losing weight for a film. A suitably shocked and amused Vidya asked. " What is the connection between women-oriented films and weight loss?" The reporter further prodded and asked, "For a glamorous role?" To which Vidya calmly answered, " I am very happy with what I'm doing. It'd be great if there could be a change in people's perception."

Hailed for being a method actor, Vidya had put on weight in 2012 to play Silk Smitha in The Dirrty Picture. At a time when there is so much conversation about how it is important to be healthy and not skinny-and that no particular body type is ideal- surely this question is uncalled for.

The journalist asked Vidya if she would lose weight for a 'glamorous role'

Having played prominent roles in films like Kai Po Che!, Wazir and Jolly LLB 2, actor Manav Kaul says the in-your-face honesty of the film industry is why he loves being a part of it.

The 40-year-old actor believes the no-holds-barred nature of people in Bollywood encourages an artiste to improve his/her performance.

In an interview with PTI, Manav says, "I love this industry because they are very brutal. If you are good (at your job), they will receive you with both hands. If not, they will tell you, as it is.

"But they are brutal not work wise. If you go to award functions and are a nobody, no one is going to click pictures with you. It is good as they don't keep you under an illusion."

The actor, who appears in the lead opposite Vidya Balan in Tumhari Sulu, says he is content with his career in the industry so far.

"I am happy doing good work. Whatever money I am getting, I am happy with it. I know what I am getting is what I am worth. I am building myself as an actor. Hopefully, things will only get better from here," he says. Manav says he despises the term character actors and rejects the idea of being a "hero".

"To play a hero, it feels very stupid. What is hero? I have no idea. I feel every person in a film is a character. If you consider and think a hero is someone who has his own story in the film then in that case in Kai Po Che! and Wazir even I was performing based on my story."

With Tumhari Sulu, the actor says he has tried to veer off serious and dark roles and was anxious about it.

"I was only getting offers for roles of a villain and I said no as I wanted to change my perception as an actor. I waited for one-and-a-half years for something different to come my way till Tumhari Sulu happened. I think the makers saw some stupidity in me. I am in the lead and I have more scenes in the film. I was a little unsure about the dance thing. I was anxious as I was doing it for the first time," he says.

Toilets and sanitation seem to be in vogue lately, as you see many celebrities endorsing themselves through initiatives to encourage clean sanitation methods.

Salman Khan in December joined hands with the Mumbai Municipal Corporation to curb open defecation and as part of this campaign, his team rebuilt toilets in over 3,000 households while simultaneously urging the people to use them.

Akshay kumar's latest movie also revolves around a toilet, which he has to build in his home in order to bring his wife back to live with him.

Vidya Balan has since 2012 been actively participating in hygiene and sanitation campains for Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan and Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan in order to encourage people to build toilets in their homes with her popular slogan "Jahan Soch, Vaha Shochalay" (Where there is thought, there is a Toilet).

The history with toilets goes a long way back. Archimedes, the Greek mathematician and engineer, among other subjects came up with the theory of water displacement when he stepped into his bath. As the story goes, he ran naked through the streets of Syracuse to the king's palace shouting "Eureka".

Although the story is about a bath tub and not a toilet, it drives home the message: Great thoughts come when you're using a toilet. A more scientific way to approach this concept would be that a clean and healthy digestive system helps generate positive and, at times innovative, thoughts.

So it is actually understandable that the honourable Prime Minister stresses on building toilets, clean sanitation practices and proper hygiene among all the citizens, men, women and children alike, to develop the nation.

With Akshay Kumar's upcoming movie 'Toilet' and Salman Khan's Toilet campaign, one wonders if its a trend for all the celebrities to get their hands dirty in their mission a clean India

A love that started a revolution! Here's the #ToiletEkPremKathaTrailer @ToiletTheFilm @psbhumi https://t.co/6XAnZgBTEa — Akshay Kumar (@akshaykumar) June 11, 2017 × Vidya Balan has since 2012 been actively participating in hygiene and sanitation campains for Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan and Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan in order to encourage people to build toilets in their homes with her popular slogan "Jahan Soch, Vaha Shochalay" (Where there is thought, there is a Toilet).
