Australia won the toss and opted to bat first in the three-match Test series opener on Thursday (Dec 14) at Perth Stadium, Perth. Riding on David Warner's 67-ball 72* and Usman Khawaja's sedate 37* (84), Australia ended the first session at 117 for no loss, scoring at nearly five per over.

During the opening session, Warner was on a roll. He ended with 11 fours and a six. In the 22nd over, he took on Shaheen Afridi and smacked him for a huge six towards the deep fine leg region. Talking about the delivery, it was a length and angling into the left-hander. Warner got down low, used his body to get inside the line and deposited the ball into the stands for an audacious six.

With online video calls through platforms like Zoom and Teams becoming a common practice in our day-to-day work life, it is now being seen as the most feasible and easy way to communicate.

However, a recent study says that such video calls may not actually be the 'smoothest' way to hold conversations.

The new research has revealed that the human brain finds it challenging to process conversations that take place through video calls in comparison to face-to-face conversations.

The findings made in a study carried out at Yale University emphasises how important it is to hold in-person communication and this is how humans naturally interact with others.

China: Beermaker starts probe after worker urination video goes viral

Pat Cummins-led Australia got off the mark in the ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Monday (Oct 16) with a thumping five-wicket win over Sri Lanka in match 14, in Lucknow. Asked to bowl first, Australia rode on Adam Zampa's four-fer and two wickets apiece from captain Cummins and Mitchell Starc to dismiss the Lankans for a paltry 209 in 43.3 overs before chasing the total in 35.3 overs courtesy of fifties from Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis.

During Australia's run-chase, they were in trouble with a poor start. From 24 for no loss, they were soon reduced to 24 for 2 in four overs, with Dilshan Madushanka striking twice in a double-wicket maiden over. However, Warner's dismissal made heads turn.

It was a back-of-a-length delivery that angled in towards leg and hit Warner on the knee roll as he tried to flick it on the onside. Initially, it seemed as if the ball was going down the leg which prompted the veteran to challenge umpire Joel Wilson's decision. Nonetheless, replays showed that the ball was just hitting the leg stump and, thus, Warner had to make the long walk back to the pavilion due to the umpire's call. This wasn't well received by Warner and he hit his pads and was seen swearing at the umpire while going back.

Despite early setbacks, the Aussies eased past the Lankans in the 210-run chase. At the post-match presentation, Cummins said, "Nothing said much on the back of two losses. There is a lot of people watching this. Outside noise doesn't bother us a lot. All parts of the game came together today. We would want to keep it up."

At the post-match presentation, Cummins said, "Nothing said much on the back of two losses. The energy on the field was great. They started very well. We bowled decently. We stayed at it. The bowlers hit the deck hard. I think high 300 was par on that. There is a lot of people watching this. Outside noise doesn't bother us a lot. All parts of the game came together today. We would want to keep it up." Australia will be relieved to have got off the mark in the ten-team tournament after two successive defeats. They will now face Pakistan on Friday (Oct 20) in Bengaluru in what will be match 18 of the competition. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Pakistan have kicked off their ICC ODI World Cup 2023 campaign on Friday (Oct 6) versus the Netherlands at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad. Being asked to bat first, the Men in Green were off to a poor start as they lost their top three in a jiffy. Fakhar Zaman, who has seen a dip in form of late, Imam-ul-Haq and captain Babar Azam were back in the hut as the 1992 winners were reeling at 38 for 3 as Logan van Beek, Paul van Meekeren and Colin Ackermann chipped in with regular wickets.
Babar Azam-led Pakistan reached India on Thursday (Sep 28) ahead of the CWC 2023 edition, which gets underway on October 05 in Ahmedabad. The players received a warm reception on arrival and the video of the same was shared by the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) official handle on X, formerly Twitter.

However, PCB chief Zaka Ashraf has made heads turn with a controversial statement. While interacting with the press, he spoke at length about PCB's recently-shared central contracts for Team Pakistan and ended up labelling India as an 'enemy country'.

On Tuesday (September 05), Novak Djokovic emerged on top of Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals of the US Open 2023. The Serbian went past the American with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 and the win marked a significant milestone for the former world number one Djokovic. The win has propelled the 36-year-old to his 47th Grand Slam semi-final, surpassing the record previously held by Swiss maestro Roger Federer.

However, there was a moment in the match when Djokovic lost his cool on a spectator. During a live volley with Fritz, a spectator yelled 'Out!' which disrupted the Serbian's concentration, leading him to concede the point. Thus, this was not well received by Djokovic and the veteran made his displeasure known as he requested the fan to be escorted out of the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

India opened their campaign in Asia Cup 2023 versus arch-rivals Pakistan, in Kandy, on September 02 (Saturday). India were sloppy in the first hour as Nepal openers -- Sheikh and Kushal Bhurtel -- stitched an impressive 65-run opening stand. Despite a good start, Indian bowlers bounced back with regular breakthroughs to keep a tab on the run-flow but Nepal is eyeing anything over 220-230. The winner of this game will proceed to the Super Four along with Pakistan who have booked their place as table-toppers after their rain-abandoned game versus India on Saturday.
A video showing a group of youngsters doing sit-ups as punishment has gone viral on social media. Media reports suggest that these trekkers were visiting the famous Dudhsagar waterfalls on the border of the Indian state of Goa and the punishment was meted out to them by officials of Railway Police. Their crime? Getting off the train before the scheduled station and crossing railway tracks on foot, something that is punishable according to the rules of the railways. But the punishment surely doesn't involve sit-ups. The video apparently shows the officials not wanting to inflict heavy punishment on the young travellers but wanting to make them realise that they have done something wrong.

Dudhsagar Falls (literal translation 'A sea of milk') is a favourite tourist spot for someone who doesn't mind a bit of trekking. The waterfalls, together with the lush greenery that surrounds it, make for a scenic location. The waterfalls become especially beautiful during the ongoing Monsoon season.

The visitors to the falls often walk along tracks of the South Western Railway line to reach Dudhsagar after getting off at Collem station in South Goa.

However, Goa Police, the Forest Department, along with the Railways have now issued orders banning trekking during monsoon to prevent the likelihood of mishaps.

Just last week, the Goa Police banned people from visiting waterfalls in the state after two deaths at Mainapi waterfall in Sanguem taluka.

The South Western Railway tweeted, urging people not to walk along the tracks.

"We urge you to savour the beauty of Dudhsagar Falls from within your coach. Walking on/along tracks not only endangers your own safety but is also an offence under sections 147, 159 of Railway Act. It can also endanger the safety of trains," it tweeted.

Dudhsagar Falls are at a height of 1017 feet. It has its origins in the river Mandovi on the Western Ghats.

In Goa, there are many examples of tourists taking a shortcut to reach destinations of their choice. For example, a particular train travelling towards Madgaon in South Goa often stops at a station named Thivim in North Goa. This is an unauthorised stop for this particular train and passengers are not allowed to alight at Thivim. However, passengers wanting to reach North Goa quickly take the unauthorised option of alighting at Thivim in this particular case.

You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. WWE legend The Undertaker saves wife from potential shark attack, video breaks the internet - Watch

Beachgoers on K’gari (Fraser Island) in Queensland have been cautioned to prioritise their safety in the presence of Australia's wild dogs, known as dingoes. Recent incidents of dingo attacks have prompted authorities to issue a warning and provide guidelines on how to stay safe. The Queensland Department of Environment and Science shared videos capturing the alarming encounters with one video showing a dingo approaching a group of sunbathers on the island and biting a French tourist on the rear end on June 4.

Another video shows a dingo chasing a boy and a man along the beach. The same dingo had bitten a 7-year-old boy a few days earlier. These incidents raised concerns about the safety of beachgoers.

Euthanisation of the aggressive dingo

Due to the dingo's repeated aggressive behaviour and the perceived risk it posed to people, authorities made the decision to euthanise it on June 10. The dingo's interactions with humans were deemed to be of a "high risk" nature.

Another terrifying encounter

Despite the euthanisation, another dingo attack occurred a week later. A 10-year-old boy was grabbed on the shoulder near a campsite and dragged underwater. Thankfully, his 12-year-old sister intervened and saved him from further harm. The boy received treatment for puncture wounds, scratches, and bruises.

Concerningly, the same dingo was spotted near the camping area later, scavenging for buried food scraps in the sand.

Understanding the behaviour of dingoes

The Queensland Department of Environment and Science explained that dingoes when they lose their natural fear of humans and become accustomed to their presence, may exhibit aggressive behavior in their quest for food. To ensure safety in the presence of wild dogs, the Queensland government has provided guidelines. The authorities advised them to keep close to children. They urged everyone to always stay within arm's reach of children and young teenagers.

Moreover, the officials also guided the tourists to travel in groups to enhance safety. Other guidelines included: choosing fenced campsites, avoiding running, avoiding feeding Dingoes as it can contribute to their loss of natural wariness, and locking up food stores and iceboxes, even on boats.

Also Read | Archaeologists unearth 4,000-year-old ‘Stonehenge’ burial ground in the Netherlands Another video shows a dingo chasing a boy and a man along the beach. The same dingo had bitten a 7-year-old boy a few days earlier. These incidents raised concerns about the safety of beachgoers. Euthanisation of the aggressive dingo Due to the dingo's repeated aggressive behaviour and the perceived risk it posed to people, authorities made the decision to euthanise it on June 10. The dingo's interactions with humans were deemed to be of a "high risk" nature. Another terrifying encounter Despite the euthanisation, another dingo attack occurred a week later. A 10-year-old boy was grabbed on the shoulder near a campsite and dragged underwater. Thankfully, his 12-year-old sister intervened and saved him from further harm. The boy received treatment for puncture wounds, scratches, and bruises. A dingo has been filmed biting a tourist in Australia. Understanding the behaviour of dingoes The Queensland Department of Environment and Science explained that dingoes when they lose their natural fear of humans and become accustomed to their presence, may exhibit aggressive behavior in their quest for food.
