Hardik Pandya has been out of action since the 2021 T20 World Cup, held in the UAE. Since then, the 28-year-old all-rounder is out of contention and is striving hard to regain full fitness to reclaim the all-rounder's slot in Team India setup across formats.

Hardik will next be seen in action during the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 edition, where he will represent the Gujarat Titans (GT). The swashbuckling all-rounder will represent his home franchise as the captain. Along with showcasing his skills as captain, Hardik will be eager to don the all-rounder's role and perform with aplomb for a comeback into the national side. For now, he was been replaced by Venkatesh Iyer in the white-ball formats. Iyer has also grown as a T20I player over the past month and is doing the right things so far to make it to the 2022 T20 WC squad.

Nonetheless, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra feels Hardik still has the upper hand and will pip Venky Iyer for the fast-bowling all-rounder's slot, for the T20 WC, once he starts bowling and regains full fitness.

“It may look like Venkatesh Iyer is ahead in the race, but I won't be surprised if Hardik Pandya wins it. Ravindra Jadeja will be the spin all-rounder and Pandya will be the fast-bowling all-rounder,” Aakash said on his official YouTube channel.

“Iyer is present for now but the day Hardik starts bowling, he will pip Venkatesh Iyer for the role. It is also worth remembering that it is not a bilateral series where you can take 18-20 players at once according to your convenience. This is an ICC event where you can select only a 15-member squad," the ex-cricketer pointed out.

The former India batter further stated that the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) opener Venky Iyer will only have an outside chance if Hardik doesn't regain full fitness.

The day Hardik starts bowling, he'll pip Iyer for the all-rounder's slot for T20 World Cup: Aakash Chopra

India demolished West Indies in the three T20Is at home. Taking an unassailable lead heading into the final encounter, Rohit Sharma-led Indian team were asked to bat first in the final T20I. After being at a tricky position, at 61-3, the Men in Blue posted a daunting 184-5 courtesy of an impressive 91-run fifth-wicket stand between Suryakumar Yadav and Venkatesh Iyer.

Both SKY and Iyer came together with the score reading 93-4 in 13.5 overs. The duo's stand flourished as the rest of the innings progressed with their strokeplay, taking India to a competitive score. In reply, Nicholas Pooran's 61 and cameos from Romario Shepherd and Rovman Powell weren't enough for Kieron Pollard's West Indies; losing by 17 runs.

Following the series, SKY's stature continues to rise in Indian cricket. He has fulfilled various roles -- coming out to bat at different positions -- and looks pretty much in contention for the T20 World Cup squad, as per Little Master Sunil Gavaskar.

Gavaskar told Star Sports, "I think he is pretty much making a case for inclusion (T20 World Cup team). In the first match, he and Venkatesh combined to take India home just when things were looking a bit difficult. Today as well. To bat like that when 4 wickets already fell that truly shows the sign that the team is making the right progress. Perfection is impossible. But to have guys who can raise their hand and step up when things are not going their way...don't forget, he is still a newcomer. So it is not like he is playing international cricket for a long time. Venkatesh too came in only a couple of months back."

“He can play at No.3 and help build an innings. Like what we saw in the first game and today the way he can finish it, he is an innings builder and also a finisher. What a great combination," pointed out the former opener.

SKY ended the series with scores of 34* (18) -- striking at 188.89 -- 8 (6) and 65 (31). Thus, he was adjudged the Player-of-the-Match as well as the Player-of-the-Series (he was also the highest run-getter in the ODI leg). At the post-match presentation after the T20Is, SKY said, "Just wanted to replicate what I did in the first game. Needed someone to stay there after Rohit got out and get the team to a defendable total. We had a long chat in the team meeting as to how we are going to react under immense pressure and it came out very well. I just try to keep things simple. He's making a case for inclusion for T20 World Cup: Sunil Gavaskar impressed with India's star batter

Rohit Sharma-led Team India beat West Indies by 17 runs to inflict a whitewash over the visitors in the just-concluded three T20Is. On Sunday evening (February 20), Rohit-led India were asked to bat first. While Ishan Kishan started off nicely, he slowed down as the innings progressed whereas Ruturaj Gaikwad and captain Rohit failed to get going.

Shreyas Iyer got a start, however, perished soon. At 91-4, Suryakumar Yadav and Venkatesh Iyer got together and had a job in hand. While it seemed 160 would have been difficult to cross, the duo put on an impressive 91-run fifth-wicket stand -- filled with strokeplay -- to take the score to 184-5 in 20 overs. SKY returned with a 31-ball 65 whereas Iyer remained unbeaten on 35* (19).

In reply, Nicholas Pooran's fifty and Romario Shepherd's cameo went in vain as the Kieron Pollard-led Windies failed to win a single game in the India tour. While the bowlers did an excellent job to finish the game, maximum credit goes to SKY-Iyer to have set it up beautifully for the home side.

Thus, Iyer reflected on the match-winning partnership with SKY and revealed how the latter's words motivated him when he came to the crease.

Speaking on Star Sports, Iyer revealed what SKY told him to make him feel at ease as he came to the middle. "That's what you need, guys bouncing off each other. When I went out there, even Surya was relatively new to the crease. I still remember the first words he told me- 'Aaj ek aur opportunity hai'," Iyer said.

"So I think, when a senior player tells you that, it gives you a lot of confidence, you see pressure as a privilege. He is one of those guys who everyone likes in the dressing room, he has got great chemistry. It was wonderful batting with him, I was really enjoying his batting from the non-striker's end," he added.

Today, there is another opportunity: Venkatesh Iyer reveals motivating words from 'likeable' Suryakumar Yadav

India defeated West Indies by 17 runs in the third and final T20I on Sunday (February 21) to complete a 3-0 whitewash in the three-match series. Young all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer was one of the heroes of India's victory as he contributed well with both the bat and the ball.

Iyer slammed a crucial knock of 35 runs off 19 balls to help India post a strong total of 184 runs on the board before taking two wickets with the ball to help the hosts defend the total. In the absence of star all-rounder Hardik Pandya, Iyer along with the likes of Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur has impressed with his exploits in limited-overs cricket.

Pandya had opted to make himself unavailable for selection post India's exit from T20 World Cup 2021 to focus on his bowling and overall fitness. The all-rounder has since missed India's series against New Zealand, South Africa and West Indies. He will also be not part of the upcoming T20I and Test series against Sri Lanka at home.

In Pandya's absence, Iyer, Chahar and Sharul have all strengthened their case for cementing their spots in India's T20I squad. Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer believes Iyer is now ahead of Pandya as far as a spot in the T20 World Cup 2022 squad is concerned.

Expressing concerns over Pandya's return to bowling full-time for the Indian team, Jaffer said he feels Iyer is currently ahead of the star all-rounder while adding that the upcoming IPL 2022 will play a key role in his return to the Indian team.

"At this point of time, I feel he's a little bit ahead because you don't know Hardik Pandya whether he's bowling now or how fit he is. Obviously how the IPL goes for Hardik Pandya will play a very key role but at this point of time, Venkatesh Iyer is ahead of Hardik Pandya," Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo.

Iyer has so far played six T20Is for India and has scored 128 runs while picking up three wickets. After a stuttering start, the young all-rounder has started to find his feet in international cricket and is expected to give Pandya a tough competition for the all-rounder's spot in the squad.

Venkatesh Iyer is ahead of Hardik Pandya in race for a spot in India's T20 World Cup squad: Wasim jaffer

The year gone by was far from a fruitful one for the Indian team as the Men in Blue once again failed to bring an end to their long-standing ICC trophy drought. India lost the final of the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship against New Zealand before failing to qualify for the knockout stages of the T20 World Cup 2021.

While it was a disappointing year for the Indian cricket team in terms of results, 2021 saw the rise of a number of promising youngsters, who can become the future stars of Indian cricket. While Mohammed Siraj and Rishabh Pant cemented their spots in the Indian team with their heroics in Australia, Ishan Kishan realised his dream of making his India debut.

Ruturaj Gaikwad continued his purple patch in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 and finished as the highest run-getter of the season, beating seasoned campaigners like KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan and Faf du Plessis to the Orange Cap before enjoying a sensational run in the Vijay Hazare Trophy where he went on to notch up 603 runs in just five games averaging over 150.

Venkatesh Iyer was also among one of the finds for Indian cricket in the year 2021 after his all-round heroics for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League. There is plenty to look forward to in terms of talent in Indian cricket in 2022 as a number of these youngsters will be raring to make it count and make the world take notice of their performances this year.

Here is a look at some Indian youngsters to look forward to in 2022:

Ruturaj Gaikwad

Ruturaj Gaikwad could easily be the next big thing in Indian cricket if nurtured in a proper manner and given adequate opportunities. In the last couple of years, Gaikwad has showcased his skills and talent against the best of bowlers in the Indian Premier League and has impressed one and all with his impeccable technique and tenacity.

Gaikwad is a technically gifted batter, who can make run-scoring look easy. He was the top scorer in IPL 2022 with 635 runs in 16 matches at an impressive average of 45.35 and a strike rate of over 136. He then finished as the highest run-getter in the Vijay Hazare Trophy where he notched up 603 runs in just five games to earn an ODI call-up in the Indian squad.

He is one of the promising batters to look forward to in the year 2022 as Gaikwad looks set to make it big in Indian cricket in the future.

Venkatesh Iyer

Venkatesh Iyer enjoyed one of his best cricketing seasons in the year 2021 as he rose to prominence after his all-round heroics for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). An explosive opener and a handy bowler, Iyer has risen through the ranks quickly and has already made his ODI and T20I debut for the Indian team. He had played an instrumental role in helping KKR reach the final of IPL 2021 with some brilliant performances with the bat.

Iyer, an attacking left-hander, notched up 370 runs in just ten matches striking close to 130 for KKR in the second phase of IPL 2021 in the UAE. He then continued his impressive run in the Vijay Hazare Trophy before being called up to the Indian ODI team. 2022 can be a crucial year for the batting all-rounder, who has got the skills and talent to become a future star of Indian cricket.

Avesh Khan

Avesh Khan has risen through humble beginnings to come a long way in his cricketing career as he continues to knock on the selectors' doors for what seems to be an inevitable India debut. Avesh had a brilliant IPL 2021 for Delhi Capitals as he finished as the second-highest wicket-taker of the season with 24 wickets in 16 matches helping Delhi reach the playoffs.

Avesh was also called up as one of the standby fast bowlers for the Indian team on their tour of England last year. The 25-year-old has pace, and the ability to bowl the right line and lengths consistently which makes him a great asset for his team. He can be one of the pacers to burst onto the scene for India in 2022 and make his dream international debut.

Ishan Kishan

Ishan Kishan enjoyed a dream run in IPL 2022 and was one of the standout performers for Mumbai Indians in their title-winning campaign. He was deservingly handed his India debut last year and went on to impress as an opener. Ishan's explosive and swashbuckling style of batting can take the game away from the opposition in the matter of a few overs.

He has played only 5 T20Is and 2 ODIs for India so far but is currently part of the ODI squad in the ongoing series against South Africa and is expected to be in the fray going forward. Ishan can have a breakthrough year in 2022 if he is given consistent opportunities for Team India.

Prasidh Krishna

One of the most promising fast bowlers in the country at present, Prasidh Krishna has been a part of the Indian Premier League for a while now but hasn't quite been able to set the stage on fire with his performances. Nonetheless, he remains an exciting prospect for the Indian team and can be utilised across all three formats.

A tall and lanky fast bowler, who can clock good pacer consistently, Krishna made his India debut in an ODI against England at home last year and is currently a part of the squad in the ongoing ODI series against South Africa. He is expected to be eased into the other formats as well and might become a potent fast bowler for India in the future.

Ravi Bishnoi

Ravi Bishnoi rose to prominence after his brilliant performances for the India U-19 team during the U-19 World Cup in 2020. He was roped in by Punjab Kings at the IPL player auction in the same year and hasn't looked back since. Bishnoi is currently one of the hottest young spin prospects in the country and has a bright future lying ahead of him.

In his debut IPL season, he picked up 12 wickets in 14 games for Punjab before taking 12 wickets once again in just nine games last season. He has 24 wickets so far in 23 IPL matches and has been picked by the Lucknow IPL team as one of their three drafts picks ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. Bishnoi can breakthrough into the Indian team this year if he can deliver consistently in the upcoming IPL season.

Former India cricketer and cricket expert Sanjay Manjrekar believes Venkatesh Iyer cannot be considered an all-rounder yet for the Indian team. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) star has been included in the ODI squad for the upcoming series against South Africa which gets underway from Wednesday (January 19).

All-rounder Iyer rose to fame during the second phase of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 last year with his batting exploits. He scored 370 runs and picked up three wickets in ten matches and played an instrumental role in helping KKR reach the final of the tournament. The former India cricketer said India should pick Jayant Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal as the two spinners while Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar can form the pace attack.

"I believe India should go with five bowlers. Venkatesh Iyer could be the sixth bowling option. Yuzvendra Chahal and Jayant Yadav will be spin-bowling options with pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar as the other specialist bowlers," Manjrekar said on ESPNCriicnfo.

Iyer, who bowls handy leg-spin, has bowled just three overs for India so far in T20Is and can be utilised as the sith bowler as per Manjrekar, who has doubts over his all-round credentials as of now. With captain Rohit Sharma set to miss the series, another youngster Ruturaj Gaikwad might make his ODI debut for India on Wednesday and open the batting with stand-in skipper KL Rahul. Iyer, who has been included in the squad in the place of Hardik Pandya, also looks set for his debut.

Gaikwad, Iyer in fray; R Ashwin likely to return in India's ODI squad for South Africa series - Report

Hardik Pandya hasn't been firing on all cylinders ever since cricket resumed in the post-pandemic era. The 27-year-old lost his place in the Test line-up for not being able to bowl -- due to back issues -- and has managed to contribute with only a handful of overs for the Men in Blue and Mumbai Indians (MI) with the white ball in hand.

Hence, his place in the limited-overs side is also very much up for grabs. On the other hand, Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) wonder boy Venkatesh Iyer's stocks have seen a sharp rise following his breakthrough season in IPL 2021. While he was included in India's T20I line-up for the NZ series at home, the swashbuckling left-hander is delivering at the domestic level as well.

Iyer, who is representing Madhya Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, has been in stellar form and has amassed 348 runs in four outings, including scores of 112, 71 and 151. Thus, he is the second-highest run-getter -- only behind Maharastra's Ruturaj Gaikwad -- and is being considered as a replacement for Hardik in the limited-overs setup for the South Africa tour.

In this regard, former Indian keeper-batsman and selector Saba Karim has named the KKR opener as Hardik's like-for-like replacement in India's ODI and T20I setup. He has also called for Ruturaj's inclusion in ODIs and Tests. "I believe that Venkatesh Iyer and Ruturaj Gaikwad have almost entered the first-team squad, and I'm talking about white-ball cricket. If we have to start the preparation for the 2023 World Cup, these two players should be part of the squad as soon as possible.

"They should be given as much exposure as possible. Both these players provide a different spectrum for the team. Gaikwad can be the backup opener with Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul going strong. On the other hand, Iyer has performed really well while batting at No. 5 or No. 6 in the Vijay Hazare trophy. If we are looking at the replacement for Hardik Pandya, we have already found the player," Karim said on the Khelneeti podcast.

Karim also opined that Indian head coach Rahul Dravid needs to start creating a core set of players in the white-ball formats, with plenty of ICC events lined-up every year.

"Rahul Dravid has seen these players for quite a while now. The way Dravid used to prepare as a player, he must be prepared in the same way as a coach. He must have thought about a core of 23-25 players in the white-ball cricket circuit. He must have started the preparation for the World Cups Venkatesh Iyer should definitely be part of the South Africa tour. He must then be tracked be in the Ranji Trophy as well because I believe he is an all-format player. It is also the time that Gaikwad is in contention for the Test squad," Karim further added.

At present, India is preparing for their departure to South Africa, where they are scheduled to play three Tests and equal number of ODIs. The tour opener will commence in Centurion on December 26 with the Test series followed by the ODIs.

Rohit Sharma will lead the limited-overs side whereas Virat Kohli will continue as the Test captain.

Iyer had played an instrumental role in helping KKR reach the final of IPL 2021 with his splendid performances in the second leg of the tournament in UAE. With Hardik Pandya currently recovering from his injury at the National Cricket Academy, selectors are certain to pick Iyer as an all-rounder in India's ODI squad for the South Africa series, as per a report in PTI. Besides his explosive batting, Iyer has also been impressive with the ball in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and has eight wickets to his name in four matches in the tournament.

"Venkatesh is surely going to South Africa. He is bowling 9 or 10 overs in every game and with Hardik still recuperating, it is the best time to give him chance and get him battle-ready for the bigger events ahead," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI.

Apart from Iyer, another youngster who is in contention to feature in the ODI squad is Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been absolutely bossing it with the bat in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy after a stellar IPL 2021 season where he bagged the Orange Cap for being the highest run-getter of the tournament.

While Gaikwad has been knocking at the selectors' door for a while now, the right-hander might still be behind Shikhar Dhawan in the pecking order. Dhawan is likely to get a few chances in the ODI series against South Africa before he is sidelined for someone like Gaikwad.

"Technically, last time India played 50-over series, Dhawan was leading India and also had a match-winning knock in Sri Lanka," the BCCI source told PTI.

"He has the ability to score runs just when he has back to the wall. So while Gaikwad should be there in the squad, I think selectors might give one last chance to Dhawan, maybe take him and give him a game or two," he added.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) staged a remarkable turnaround in the second leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 as they qualified for the playoffs despite having managed only two wins in their first seven matches of the Indian leg of the tournament. KKR won five of their seven matches in the UAE leg and finished four before entering the final by winning the Eliminator and the second Qualifier.

Though they ended up on the losing side in the final with Chennai Super Kings lifting their fourth IPL title, KKR had the campaign to remember. Iyer, who has earned his maiden India call-up for the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand, takes inspiration from England superstar Ben Stokes and wants to become like him for Team India. The all-rounder said he would like to be an all-format player like Stokes for the Indian team.

"What Ben Stokes does for England or any other team he plays for, that is quite inspiring. He is a match-winner in every format. He contributes in all three departments equally and he is such a big asset for the team," Iyer told Sports Yaari.

"Watching him play I feel like this is something that I really want to become... Contribute in every format and in every position, take wickets with the ball and become a safe slip fielder like Stokes. Which team wouldn't want a player like Stokes? I am inspired by Ben Stokes," he added.

India's Ben Stokes? KKR star says he wants to become like England all-rounder and contribute in all formats

For India's upcoming three-match Twenty20 series at home against New Zealand, the Indian cricket board (BCCI) has made a number of changes to the squad that featured in the T20 World Cup 2021. Virat Kohli has been rested along with pacemen Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, Venkatesh Iyer, Avesh Khan and Harshal Patel have been added to the squad while dropping all-rounder Hardik Pandya, whose performance during the T20 World Cup remained a matter of discussion, not just performance, his selection altogether as his bowling was limited due to injury.

Meanwhile, former Indian batter VVS Laxman has welcomed decision to give chance to players, who have performed well in the Indian Premier League (IPL). "I think they have rewarded the players who have done well in the IPL, which is the way forward keeping in mind that the World Cup is going to happen in Australia in one year's time," Laxman said on Star Sports.

'He could be the back-up to Hardik Pandya': Laxman names IPL star who can be India's next utility all-rounder

All-rounders in Indian cricket are a rare commodity and the newest entrant to the club, Venkatesh Iyer, knows only too well that he has to keep his focus on both aspects of the game in order to remain relevant.

The 26-year-old Madhya Pradesh man has been rewarded with a maiden call-up for the T20 International home series against New Zealand starting November 17 and knows that going forward, workload management would be an important focus area for him.

"My workload management has been good so far. I am an all-rounder so I have to be equally focussed on both aspects of the game. That's what I have been doing right from my age-group state level days. It's so far not been a very big issue," the suave Kolkata Kight Riders man tod PTI in an exclusive interaction.

For Iyer the endeavour is to display multiple skills across formats.

"I have always worked hard on my red ball game and it has been my conscious effort not be one dimensional.

"If you have to play for India, you have to be consistent across formats and that's why I have put in a lot of work in both departments of the game.

"As much as I have worked on my batting, I have also worked on my bowling," said Iyer, who many like Harbhajan Singh believe can shock batters with extra pace.

His 370 runs in the IPL for KKR, along with steady medium pace that got him three wickets, brought him into national reckoning. He is being seen as a replacement of Hardik Pandya, who is still not fit to bowl and does not quite fit in as a pure batter.

Iyer, who has six half-centuries and seven wickets for Madhya Pradesh in Ranji Trophy, believes that it has been his consistency, not only in IPL but also in first-class cricket, that has helped get this far.

During the IPL in UAE, did he get a feeling that he would make it?

"I must say that it was not just about IPL that gave me belief that I could represent my country.

"When I was playing Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali for my state Madhya Pradesh, I always knew that if I carry on with good performances in domestic cricket, I would play for India one day," he said.

"I always had that belief."

Having lived in Indore, it was local coach Dinesh Sharma, who first tapped his talent as he made rapid strides while rising through the ranks of age-group cricket, captaining the U-23 state team.

When he touched base in the United Arab Emirates with the KKR team in the last week of August, he wouldn't have imagined that he would make such progress in a matter of months.

Two and half months later, he was sitting in his Delhi hotel room with Madhya Pradesh teammates when fellow national team entrant Avesh Khan broke the news to him.

"We had a match (vs Kerala) and it was Avesh who came to my room and informed that both of us have been selected. Obviously, there couldn't have been a better feeling," Iyer revealed while sitting with his teammates.

He was honest in his admission that while he was working on his dream, he didn't think it would be realised so soon.

"No, I never felt that life will take such a beautiful turn. I don't expect anything but believe in taking things as they come. Yes, I am very happy and excited as this is the dream you live for but frankly speaking, I never expected it to happen so soon," Iyer said.

The lesser known aspect about Iyer is that he once got a job offer in multi-national auditing company Deloitte but decided to pursue cricket with encouragement from his parents.

With an MBA degree in finance, he has cleared the foundation and inter-level exams of Chartered Accountancy. Iyer attributes his cricketing smarts to him being a diligent student.

ALSO READ: Dream to represent India has been fulfilled: Avesh Khan rejoices after selection for NZ T20Is "I have always worked hard on my red ball game and it has been my conscious effort not be one dimensional. The Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) in India on Tuesday (November 09) announced Team India's 15-man squad for the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand. The T20I series against Kane Williamson's men will be India's first white-ball assignment post their disappointing exit from the onging T20 World Cup 2021. Virat Kohli, who has stepped down as the captain in T2OIs, has been rested for the New Zealand series at home. Rohit Sharma has been appointed as India's full-time captain after Kohli's exit and will be leading the side against the Kiwis. Senior spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who was snubbed from the T20 World Cup squad has made his comeback while the likes of Rahul Chahar and Varun Chakravarthy have been dropped from the team.

Along with Kohli, the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya have also been rested for the New Zealand T20Is. Some of the young guns who performed exceptionally well in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 have been rewarded for their performances.

The likes of Hashal Patel and Venkatesh Iyer have earned their maiden national call-ups after a stellar IPL campaign this year. Harshwal was the leading wicket-taker in IPL 2021 with 32 wickets in 15 matches for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Axar Patel has been roped in as a like-to-like replacement for Ravindra Jadeja while R Ashwin has retained his place in the team. Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan are the two wicket-keepers in the squad.

Comebacks and kings: Five things we learned from Indian Premier League 2021

The two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have entered the IPL 2021 final, riding on the back of some superlative performances from their Indian youngsters such as Shubman Gill, Venkatesh Iyer, Rahul Tripathi, Varun Chakravarthy along with some very vital contributions from Sunil Narine, Lockie Ferguson, etc.

For the unversed, Eoin Morgan-led KKR had only two wins from seven games in the first leg of IPL 14, in India. However, they turned their campaign emphatically with seven victories from nine games to enter their third finale in the IPL. Ahead of their big-ticket encounter versus MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Virender Sehwag has suggested the Kolkata franchise to retain one of their uncapped Indian players, i.e. Venkatesh Iyer.

Iyer was introduced into the KKR line-up in the UAE leg. The swashbuckling left-hander made a mark instantly, with his free-flowing approach, to amass 320 runs in 10 games at an average of 32 and strike-rate of 125, along with three half-centuries.

Thus, Sehwag told Cricbuzz, "No doubt. He has been a great find of this tournament, because if someone has been instrumental in staging KKR’s comeback, it has been Iyer. The starts he has given KKR at the top, it has allowed the team to reach the final. Even against Delhi Capitals, he finished the match in the first 10 overs itself and from there onward, it was merely a formality."

"The way he is batting, he can be the top contender if KKR are looking to retain some players. He may have come in this year for a cheaper price but heading into the mega auction, he will be sold for a very expensive price. So, I would like to believe that KKR would discuss that if they are to retain 2-3 Indians, Iyer can be one of them," Sehwag added.

Iyer has taken on some world-class bowlers with ease and confidence. His contributions at the top of the order have immensely helped KKR to start well in the UAE leg. He was also impressive in the side's narrow-win over Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Qualifier 2, taking his franchise to the finale. He will now like to play a match-winning knock versus Chennai in the season-finale and guide Kolkata to their third title. If he plays a memorable knock in the final, KKR will surely like to retain him ahead of the mega auction, later this year.

Delhi Capitals (DC) pacer Avesh Khan is likely to join team India as a net bowler ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE and Oman. Avesh has reportedly been asked by the BCCI to stay back in the UAE after the conclusion of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 and join the Indian team bubble ahead of the World Cup.

Avesh has been in brilliant form in IPL 2021 so far and is currently the second-highest wicket-taker this season with 23 wickets to his name in 15 matches. He has bowled at a good pace and has also impressed with his consistency. The speedster can also be shifted to the reserves if the team management wants.

"The national selectors have decided to also include Avesh in the mix. As of now, he will be a net bowler but if the team management feels, he can be upgraded," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI.

Besides, Avesh, Sunrisers Hyderabad's new find Umran Malik has also been reportedly asked to join as a net bowler for team India ahead of the T20 World Cup 2021. Malik grabbed the limelight with his raw pace on his debut against Kolkata Knight Riders where he clocked over 151 kmph and shattered the record for the fastest delivery by an Indian this season.

Avesh, who was part of the reserves during India's tour of England, earlier this year, has impressed the team management. He was reportedly close to getting into the squad before an injury hampered his chances in England. As per PTI, many believe he was close to making it to the playing XI had he not gotten injured.

"Avesh bowls at an average speed of 142 to 145 clicks, earns disconcerting bounce from the flattest of decks and has been on support staff's radar for some time," the source told PTI.

Venkatesh Iyer as cover, Hardik Pandya to play as pure batter

Another youngster who is all set to get rewarded for his performances in IPL 2021 so far is KKR all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer. Iyer has played just eight matches in IPL so far but has done enough to convince the selectors of his skills and abilities. The batting all-rounder has so far scored 265 runs and picked up three wickets.

He has been asked to stay back as a cover and will stay with the rest of the Indian squad in the bubble ahead of the start of the T20 World Cup. The report also stated that star all-rounder Hardik Pandya is likely to remain in the squad as a pure batter as there are still doubts over his bowling. Harshal Patel and 2 other IPL stars likely to join Indian team to support their training for T20 WC - Report

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 has witnessed some of the young guns outshine the old warhorses this year. One of the best T20 leagues across the globe, the IPL has over the years provided a much-needed platform for the Indian youngsters to shine and prove their worth.

India's domestic cricket structure is a formidable force in itself with thousands of players plying their trade across states, districts and other local sides in order to realise their dreams of playing for India one day. However, the demanding domestic structure had often been criticised for not identifying and nurturing proper talent at the grassroots level.

Thanks to the IPL, the gap between the national team and domestic cricket has been bridged smoothly as youngsters get a chance to rub shoulders with the best in the world in the cash-rich league. There have been a plethora of success stories in IPL that have gone on to represent India at the highest stage later in their careers.

Venkatesh Iyer is one of the youngsters who has played an instrumental role in helping KKR secure a spot in the playoffs in IPL 2021. Making his debut for KKR against RCB, Iyer announced himself on the big stage with a cracking 41 off just 27 balls and has not looked back since. Future superstars! Five Indian youngsters who took IPL 2021 by a storm with their performances

IPL 2021: From Ruturaj Gaikwad to Avesh Khan! 5 most impressive performances by youngsters

Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja has lavished praise on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) youngster Venkatesh Iyer, who has taken the UAE leg of the season by a storm with his brilliant performances. Drawing parallels with Gayle, Jadeja said Iyer's batting reminded of the veteran West Indies batsman who is known for his explosive hitting.

Iyer, who made his debut for KKR in the ongoing UAE leg of IPL 2021, had announced his arrival in style with an unbeaten 41 against RCB in his side's first game of the second leg before notching up a half-century against Mumbai Indians in the next encounter.

Iyer continued his stellar run on Friday and slammed a brilliant 67 in KKR's last encounter against Punjab Kings. Reacting to his tremendous power-hitting against PBKS, Jadeja said his batting style reminded him of a young Gayle, who used to go after the opposition bowlers irrespective of the playing conditions.

“[He is] free-flowing. We talked about Chris Gayle, not that I am comparing him with Gayle or saying that Iyer plays like him, but his mould is somewhat like Gayle,” Ajay Jadeja said on Cricbuzz.

“Now he is 42, but in his younger days, Gayle had the X-factor in him. When he used to bat, it seemed that he can bat at will, no matter what the conditions or the pitch are. For other batters, you might say, ‘the track is slow, scoring might be difficult', but all that did not apply to Gayle. He [Venkatesh Iyer] is just like that,” he added.

Iyer's 67 off 49 delivereies was laced with nine fours and a solitray six as he helped his side post 165/7 on the board in 20 overs. However, his efforts went in vain as Punjab Kings chased down the target with three balls to spare and remain alive in the race for playoffs.

Iyer has so far amassed 193 runs in just five matches for KKR while also picking up three wickets to establish himself as one of the ragular starters in the playing XI.

He has the x-factor like Chris Gayle: Ajay Jadeja lauds Indian youngster for setting IPL 2021 alight

A number of youngsters have taken the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season by storm with their impressive performances for their respective franchises. The likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Harshal Patel and Sanju Samson among others have been consistently producing impressive displays. The latest name to be added to the list is that of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) star Venkatesh Iyer.

Iyer was an unknown entity in the IPL before the second leg of the ongoing season in UAE. The left-arm all-rounder has created a lot of buzz with his impressive all-round performances in the UAE and has also cemented his spot in the playing XI. Brought for Rs 20 lakh ( INR 2 million), Iyer has proved to be one of the bargains of the season and has delivered with both bat and the ball.

He announced his arrival at the IPL stage with a cracking unbeaten 41 in KKR's first game of the UAE leg against RCB before notching up his maiden IPL fifty against Mumbai Indians in the next encounter. Iyer slammed a brilliant 67 off 49 balls against Punjab Kings on Friday to continue his stellar run in the tournament. He has also proved handy with the ball and has picked up 3 wickets besides scoring 193 runs in five matches so far.

Former India cricketer and expert Sanjay Manjrekar recently heaped praise on 26-year-old Iyer and said he might fetch a huge amount in the IPL mega auction next year. Manjrekar believes the uncapped Indian all-rounder can fetch up to Rs 12 to 14 crore ( INR 1.2 to 1.4 billion ) at the mega auction next year.

"I'm thinking 12-14 crores because this is not a kind of a fluke show. I was looking at his First-Class numbers and his List A record is outstanding. His average is 47, strikes at 92. That is his T20 record in domestic cricket, not counting the IPL. His strike rate is high, he averages 37. So this is a guy who knows how to bat. Plus, he is a bowler, and in the last match, he has shown that he can bowl the tough overs too. So he is somebody who is going to fetch a very high price," Manjrekar said on ESPNCricinfo.

While he has taken IPL 2021 by storm, Iyer also possesses a great record in the domestic circuit. He has 849 runs in 24 List A matches at an average of over 47 and a strike rate of 98.72. He has played 43 T20s and scored 917 runs, striking at an impressive 138.51 with an average of over 38.

Manjrekar believes Iyer will not prove to be a one-season wonder and can be a long-term prospect for any team in the IPL mega auction next year.

"Today, I focussed on the way he bats. Very interestingly, he bats a lot on the backfoot. Looks to pull, play the cut. So this is a batter who is not going down the wicket and trying to hit forcing everything. He is staying on backfoot, cutting and pulling and then he’s got a big stride forward. I see him more as a real qualified T20 game-changer than somebody having a couple of good weeks," Manjrekar said.

'This is not fluke show': Sanjay Manjrekar names uncapped Indian player who can fetch INR 1.2-1.4 billion in IPL mega auction

Eoin Morgan-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) thumped defending champions Rohit Sharma's Mumbai Indians (MI) in match 34 of the IPL 2021 edition on Thursday (September 23). Opting to bowl first, Morgan & Co. had to strive hard to get the first breakthrough but managed to remain on top after getting rid of the MI openers Rohit and Quinton de Kock.

While Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine remained economical and put a lid on the scoreboard, Prasidh Krishna and Lockie Ferguson were among wickets as KKR restricted MI to 155-6. In reply, KKR opener Venkatesh Iyer and Rahul Tripathi shone with the bat, with their attacking style of play, as the two-time winners closed the run-chase in 15.1 overs with 7 wickets in hand.

Venkatesh, who made a mark on IPL debut in KKR's 9-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), once again stood tall in his side's run-chase, returning with his maiden IPL fifty (30-ball 53, with 4 fours and 3 sixes). After his knock, Parthiv Patel stated that he sees shades of Yuvraj Singh in Iyer's playing style.

Parthiv said on Star Sports, "We do talk about a lot of boundaries. But the maturity that Venkatesh Iyer showed was superb. We are talking about someone who is not an India A player, someone who has not played international cricket.

"He showed so much maturity and courage to go out there and back himself. That’s something we always look out for in young players in the IPL. He went out and played fearless cricket. One of the great things about him, having seen him, he can not only open, he can bat from 1 to 9 and bowl as well. So he will have a great future. I think there is a lot of Yuvraj Singh in him. There is a lot of flow."

IPL 2021: Parthiv Patel sees shades of Yuvraj Singh in KKR's Venkatesh Iyer as Kolkata thump MI by 7 wickets

Venkatesh Iyer has lit up Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)'s campaign in the second leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 in UAE. A prodigious left-hander, Iyer's nonchalant and flamboyant style of batting has helped him become one of the most talked-about youngsters in the league at present.

Iyer has had an eventful journey in his cricketing career so far as he continues his pursuit of glory on the 24 yards. A bright student, Iyer had ditched his CA final exams for an MBA in finance, only a year after turning a professional cricketer.

He made his T20 debut for Madhya Pradesh in March 2015 but only a year later in 2016, he had to choose between cricket or CA finals. He turned down the opportunity to become a chartered accountant and decided to go for an MBA to ensure he could continue his dream of making it big in cricket.

Post his MBA, Iyer landed a lucrative job offer from one of the Big 4 firms of India in 2018, however, destiny had other plans for the swashbuckling batsman.

In an interview with ESPN Cricinfo, Iyer revealed he was offered a job from Deloitte but he turned it down for cricket. In the same interview, the opening batsman claimed it didn't take a lot of effort to manage cricket and his MBA as the game remains his first love while asserting that he would have cracked IIT or IIM had it not been for cricket.

"I decided to give up my CA and pursue an MBA in finance. Honestly, I didn't have to put in a lot of effort to manage both. I'm not bragging, I've always been a bright student," Iyer said.

"Had there been no cricket, I would have landed in an IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) or IIM (Indian Institute of Management)," he added.

Born in Indore in 1994, Iyer's sole motive behind trading his CA finals with an MBA in finance was based on his desire to pursue a career in cricket. However, it has not been an easy journey for him on the pitch as he had to wait for nearly six years to get his first break in the IPL since making his first-class debut in 2015.

Iyer hasn't looked back since making his Ranji Trophy debut in 2018 and a decent run in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy earlier this year saw KKR pick him at his base price of Rs 20 lakh at the player auction. He made a cracking debut for the Eoin Morgan-led side in their first game of the UAE leg against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday before continuing his purple patch against Mumbai Indians on Thursday.

He slammed an unbeaten 41 off just 27 balls to power KKR to a 9-wicket win over RCB on the resumption of their IPL 2021 campaign and followed it up with a brilliant 30-ball 53 against Mumbai Indians on Thursday as KKR bagged their second win in a row, riding on the 26-year-old's heroics with the willow.

A dasher with the willow and a handy part-time bowler, Iyer will be hoping to continue his stellar run in the upcoming matches and make the most of the opportunities coming his way in his debut season of the cash-rich league.
