The standoff between US President Donald Trump and California Governor Gavin Newsom has escalated after Trump apparently suggested on Monday (June 9) that he would support arresting the governor, who has fiercely opposed the federal deployment of National Guard troops in Los Angeles. “I would do it … I think it would be a great thing,” Trump said when asked if his border czar Tom Homan should arrest Newsom. He went on to call Newsom “grossly incompetent” as tensions mount over violent protests in Los Angeles sparked by immigration raids. This is a day I hoped I would never see in America,” Newsom posted on X. “I don’t care if you’re a Democrat or a Republican, this is a line we cannot cross as a nation — this is an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism.” he added. 'Step toward authoritarianism': Trump says he'd arrest California Gov. Newsom - Can US president really arrest a sitting Governor?

US President Donald Trump has deployed 2,000 National Guard troops in Los Angeles as federal agents faced off against demonstrators for a second day following immigration raids. In a statement, the White House blamed Democrats for the attack on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and federal law enforcement agents, calling them "feckless." The White House defended the action stating that it was "basic deportation operations." It said that the deployment of National Guards was to tackle the lawlessness. "In recent days, violent mobs have attacked ICE Officers and Federal Law Enforcement Agents carrying out basic deportation operations in Los Angeles, California. In the wake of this violence, California’s feckless Democrat leaders have completely abdicated their responsibility to protect their citizens. That is why President Trump has signed a Presidential Memorandum deploying 2,000 National Guardsmen to address the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester," said Karoline Leavitt, White House Press Secretary in a statement.

Leavitt's statement came after Trump's border czar, Tom Homan said in a TV interview that National Guards will be deployed. Moreover, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the Pentagon was prepared to mobilize active duty Marines "if violence continues" in Los Angeles.

Trump also responded to the development on his Truth Social platform. He wrote, “If Governor Gavin Newscum, of California, and Mayor Karen Bass, of Los Angeles, can’t do their jobs, which everyone knows they can’t, then the Federal Government will step in and solve the problem, RIOTS & LOOTERS, the way it should be solved!!!”

What has happened so far?
The raids are part of the Trump administration's larger crackdown on immigrants. Trump has pledged to deport record numbers of people in the country illegally and lock down the US-Mexico border, with the White House setting a goal for ICE to arrest at least 3,000 migrants per day. Earlier this week, ICE Director Todd Lyons defended the raids, claiming that the agency is targeting "dangerous criminals" and that ICE is making an average of 1,600 arrests per day. US ICE agents on June 6 carried out raids in Los Angeles stating that it was related to "harboring of people illegally in the country." The raids were supported by the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations. Labor leader and Service Employees International Union-United Service Workers West President David Huerta was also detained during the raids. ICE also said that as many as 44 were arrested. The security agents confronted around 100 protesters in the Paramount area in southeast Los Angeles. Chaotic scenes unfolded as ICE agents conducted raids and took several people in custody. Demonstrators displayed Mexican flags and others covered their mouths with respiratory masks while tear gas, flash-bang grenades, smoke grenades and pepper spray were used against the protesting crowd by the authorities. In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement about Friday's protests that "1,000 rioters surrounded a federal law enforcement building and assaulted ICE law enforcement officers, slashed tires, defaced buildings, and taxpayer-funded property." Bass, the Democratic mayor of Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass condemned the immigration raids. "I am deeply angered by what has taken place," Bass said in a statement. "These tactics sow terror in our communities and disrupt basic principles of safety in our city. We will not stand for this."California Governor Gavin Newsom called the decision "purposefully inflammatory." He added that Trump's move would “only escalate tensions.”

The protests pit Democratic-run Los Angeles, where census data suggests a significant portion of the population is Hispanic and foreign-born, against Trump's Republican White House, which has made cracking down on immigration a hallmark of his second term.

The dramatic spat between US President Donald Trump and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk might result in risking the future of US space plans. Trump on Friday (Jun 6) said that he plans to “take a look” at Musk’s government contracts after he threatened to cut Musk's government subsidies and contracts, risking the future of NASA and SpaceX collaborations. When asked by a reporter on Air Force One whether he planned to go ahead with his threat to cut Musk’s government subsidies, Trump said he did not rule it out. “We’ll take a look at everything. It’s a lot of money. It’s a lot of subsidy. So we’ll take a look at that — only if it’s fair for him and for the country ... but it has to be fair,” he said. Earlier on Thursday (Jun 5), Musk announced that SpaceX will decommission its Dragon spacecraft. “In light of the President’s statement about cancellation of my government contracts, SpaceX will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately,” Musk wrote on X. He later retracted his statement, saying, “We won’t decommission Dragon.”
SpaceX’s dominance in US space programs
Founded in 2002, SpaceX has become the most dominant launch provider in the world. Its spacecrafts ferry astronauts to the International Space Station while its Starlink satellite provides the a global broadband. The space company is embedded in some of the Pentagon’s most sensitive projects, including tracking of hypersonic missiles. The Crew Dragon is currently the only US spacecraft that is certified for ferrying NASA astronauts to and from the ISS under a contract worth over $4.9 billion. The gumdrop-shaped capsule flies atop a Falcon 9 rocket and splashes down in the ocean. Its variant, Cargo Dragon, delivers supplies to the ISS for astronauts. Crew Dragon’s certification in 2020 ended the reliance on Russian Soyuz rockets to carry astronauts to space after the Space Shuttle program ended in 2011. Apart from NASA missions, Crew Dragon also flies private missions, with the most recent being Fram2, which carried tourists over the Earth’s poles. The next scheduled launch for the spacecraft is the Axiom-4 mission on Tuesday (Jun 10). The Crew Dragon will carry astronauts from India, Poland, and Hungary to the space station. NASA had hoped to certify Boeing's Starliner for crewed missions. However, the program has been met with severe delays. He later retracted his statement, saying, “We won’t decommission Dragon.” SpaceX’s dominance in US space programs Founded in 2002, SpaceX has become the most dominant launch provider in the world. In a recent test flight last year, the spacecraft faced failure after it experienced propulsion issues en route to the orbital lab with its first astronaut crew. The two astronauts, Sunita Williams and Butch Willmore, were brought home aboard SpaceX Dragon spacecraft earlier this year. Musk's BIG hint at new political party? Will there be a Trump vs Musk in US politics?

With the fallout of the bromance between President Trump and the Tesla CEO, Musk has intensified his criticism, focusing particularly on the ‘Big Beautiful Bill,’ which he calls the ‘Big Ugly Bill,’ and it will significantly increase the fiscal deficit up to $2.5 trillion. Through a series of tweets, Musk highlighted how the already poor fiscal health of the nation is at risk with the increased defence spending of the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’.“We have a $2 trillion deficit. It keeps growing. Our interest payments are higher than our defence department budget," posted Musk, sharing an excerpt of the interview with Fox News.

“The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts. I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!” said Trump in a post on Truth Social.

Trump criticised Elon, saying that he is mad because the bill was taking away the EV mandate, which forced everyone to buy an electric car, towards which people are not inclined. "Keep the EV/solar incentives cuts in the bill, also cut all the crazy spending increases in the ‘Big Ugly Bill’ so that America doesn’t go bankrupt!" said the Billionaire in a post on X. Musk earlier privately and publicly said that if all the tax credits were taken away it will hurt other EV manufacturers more than Tesla.

Musk also hits back, criticising the congressional process that no one in Congress, who is voting for the bill, had time to read it. US Senator for Kentucky cited a study that resonated with Musk's claim that America spend a significant portion of its budget on interest payments, approximately $892 billion, which amounts to 10 per cent. It appears both Musk and Trump want to decrease the Budget deficit, but they are on different trajectories. Notably, the Bill was passed in the House of Representatives with a narrow split of 215-214 on May 22. The fallout between the Former DOGE head and President Trump will lead to a loss of momentum for the bill, which will be up for consideration in the Senate later in June or early July.

Speaker Johnson: I don’t know what has motivated this disturbance to but obviously it's not helpful. The speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, said, "The fallout is not helpful." He also said that he is trying to communicate with Musk to clear his misconceptions about the bill. This feud left the MAGA supporter in limbo, Fox News anchor Laura Ingraham said, “How happy would the democrats and legacy media be today?”. Her show, The Ingraham Angle, was calling it “a big not-so-beautiful breakup”. A handful of Republican senators have already expressed opposition to the bill. It is to be seen how the GOP will rally its support for the “Big Beautiful Bill”.

The fallout of the bromance between Trump and Musk comes at the onset of the presentation of the Big Beautiful Bill in the Senate later in June or early July.

SpaceX’s Crew Dragon is currently the only US spacecraft that is certified for ferrying NASA astronauts to and from the International Space Station under a contract worth over $4.9 billion. The gumdrop-shaped capsule flies atop a Falcon 9 rocket and splashes down in the ocean. Its variant, Cargo Dragon, delivers supplies to the ISS for astronauts.
NASA to continue working on Trump’s vision for space future
After Musk’s announcement to decommission the spacecraft, NASA spokeswoman Bethany Stevens said that the agency will continue to work on the president’s vision for the future of space. “NASA will continue to execute upon the President’s vision for the future of space,” Stevens said on X. “We will continue to work with our industry partners to ensure the President’s objectives in space are met.” NASA had hoped to certify Boeing's Starliner for crewed missions. However, the program has been met with severe delays. Starliner, on the other hand, returned empty after being deemed not safe for carrying the astronauts back home.
SpaceX’s Crew Dragon
Crew Dragon’s certification in 2020 ended the reliance on Russian Soyuz rockets to carry astronauts to space after the Space Shuttle program ended in 2011. Apart from NASA missions, Crew Dragon also flies private missions, with the most recent being Fram2, which carried tourists over the Earth’s poles. The next scheduled launch for the spacecraft is the Axiom-4 mission on Tuesday (Jun 10). The Crew Dragon will carry astronauts from India, Poland, and Hungary to the space station. Meanwhile, as the rift between Trump and Musk grows wider, Tesla shares have also plummeted more than 15 per cent on Thursday, recording a loss of over $100 billion in market capitalisation.

‘I asked him to leave’: Trump calls Elon Musk ‘CRAZY’ amid fallout

US President Donald Trump on Thursday (June 5) once again lamented about not getting credit for mediating the India-Pakistan ceasefire, which he has been claiming since the two nations agreed on a ceasefire after Operation Sindoor. However, the US president also praised India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a "good guy"."They don't give me credit for anything," Trump said on the India-Pakistan ceasefire.
Here's how Trump kept on claiming credit for Indo-Pak ceasefire
On May 10, US President Donald Trump was the first one to announce the India-Pakistan ceasefire on his Truth Social."After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE," he posted. We had already said to stop. If there was any persuasion by the American president or his senior officials, it would have been the persuasion of the Pakistanis. They would have had to be persuaded. We don't need to be persuaded because we don't want war," he said.

He said, "I don't want to say I did, but I sure as hell helped settle the problem between Pakistan and India last week, which was getting more and more hostile, and all of a sudden, you'll start seeing missiles of a different type, and we got it settled." However, later in May, Trump on May 31 again reiterated his earlier claim that his administration helped avert what he called a potential nuclear disaster between the two neighbors. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is in the US leading an Indian delegation, commented on US President Donald Trump's repeated claims of mediation between India and Pakistan. While saying that he respects the US president, Tharoor said that India's understanding of the issue is different. “No one needed to persuade us to stop. We had already said to stop. If there was any persuasion by the American president or his senior officials, it would have been the persuasion of the Pakistanis. They would have had to be persuaded. We don't need to be persuaded because we don't want war," he said.

US President Donald Trump also praised India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a "good guy".
