Tech billionaire Elon Musk has intensified his public opposition to Donald Trump’s flagship tax and spending bill, calling on Americans to demand that lawmakers reject the legislation. In a forceful social media post on Wednesday, Musk urged voters to “KILL the BILL,” accusing the president of pushing through a fiscally irresponsible agenda.

Call your Senator, Call your Congressman, Bankrupting America is NOT ok! KILL the BILL— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 4, 2025

“Call your Senator, Call your Congressman. Bankrupting America is NOT ok! KILL the BILL,” Musk posted on X, formerly Twitter, to his 220 million followers.
Musk’s June 4 rebuttal
This latest post is part of Musk’s escalating campaign against what Trump calls his “One, Big, Beautiful Bill.” Musk’s opposition began earlier this week, with a flurry of posts on June 4 describing the legislation as a “disgusting abomination” that could plunge the United States into what he calls “debt slavery.” He had warned that the bill would “massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion” and accused lawmakers of betraying fiscal conservatism. “I just can’t stand it anymore,” Musk wrote on June 4. “This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong.” In another widely shared post, he mocked the bill by sharing a parody movie poster of “Kill Bill” and said, “A bill can be big or it can be beautiful, but I don’t know if it can be both.”
Musk's shifting stance
Musk’s criticism is not merely rhetorical. The timing of his public outburst is significant. Just days earlier, he officially stepped down as head of the Department of Government Efficiency — or DOGE — a short-term post he held in the Trump administration. His appointment was meant to symbolize a drive to rein in federal spending. But his sudden exit and immediate condemnation of Trump’s economic agenda suggest deep internal disagreements. The bill, which has already passed the House and is now under Senate review, combines major tax cuts, a sharp increase in the federal debt ceiling, and sweeping cuts to federal programs — including clean energy subsidies that benefit Musk’s electric vehicle company Tesla. Musk has called for a complete overhaul of the legislation. “A new spending bill should be drafted that doesn’t massively grow the deficit and increase the debt ceiling by five trillion dollars,” he wrote on X. On the same day Musk renewed his attack, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released a troubling analysis of the bill’s financial impact. According to the CBO, the legislation would add $2.4 trillion to the federal deficit over the next decade. The office projected a $3.67 trillion drop in government revenue and only a $1.25 trillion decrease in federal spending through 2034. The report does not factor in any potential economic growth that could offset the losses — a key justification cited by the bill’s supporters. Despite Musk’s repeated attacks, the Trump camp appears undeterred. The former president has continued to tout the bill as a landmark achievement. “Passing THE ONE, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL is a Historic Opportunity to turn our Country around,” Trump posted recently. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed Musk’s criticism, saying, “The President already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill. It doesn’t change the president’s opinion. This is one big, beautiful bill and he’s sticking to it.” Musk’s public break with Trump marks a dramatic shift in their relationship. During his four-month stint in government, Musk had maintained a close and visible association with the administration. But behind the scenes, sources say tensions had been mounting. According to NBC News and Axios, the Trump White House rejected multiple proposals from Musk — including his suggestion to let the Federal Aviation Administration manage Starlink and his preferred candidate to head NASA. The administration also reportedly denied his request to extend his tenure beyond the 130-day legal limit for special government employees. Musk officially confirmed his departure on May 29, writing, “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending.” Trump hosted a farewell event at the White House the next day, publicly praising Musk’s efforts. However, just days later, Musk’s tone turned sharply critical, suggesting that the parting was not entirely amicable. Tesla’s business interests may also be a factor in Musk’s political stance. The bill proposes major rollbacks to Biden-era clean energy and electric vehicle incentives, which have directly benefited Tesla. Musk’s tenure in government had already coincided with a dip in Tesla EV sales — a trend that analysts partly attribute to his alignment with a deeply polarizing administration. Speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum on May 20, Musk signalled his intent to reduce his political visibility, saying, “I’m going to do a lot less in the future,” as quoted by Reuters. For now, however, he appears to be fully engaged in the political fight — positioning himself not just as a business leader, but as a fiscal hawk willing to take on the very administration he once served. Whether his campaign will succeed in derailing the legislation remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Elon Musk is no longer pulling his punches.

This latest post is part of Musk’s escalating campaign against what Trump calls his “One, Big, Beautiful Bill.

US President Donald Trump's administration announced on Tuesday (June 3) that it would revoke the guidance to American hospitals that directed them to provide emergency abortions for women. The withdrawal of the guidance by the Trump administration means abortion will be denied when it would be necessary to stabilise the medical condition of pregnant women. The policy was introduced by the Joe Biden-led administration in 2022. US President Donald Trump has once again reignited tensions with Beijing, calling Chinese President Xi Jinping “very tough” and “extremely hard to make a deal with”. The remark was posted in the early hours of Tuesday on his social media platform, Truth Social. The US president's remark comes amid fresh trade and geopolitical flashpoints that threaten to undo the fragile truce achieved just weeks ago.

“I like President XI of China, always have, and always will, but he is VERY TOUGH, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH!!!” Trump wrote on the Truth Social website.
US-China tariff tension continues
The US-China trade relationship has remained turbulent in recent years. In early 2025, President Trump imposed a sweeping 145 per cent tariff on Chinese imports, citing trade imbalances and national security concerns. China responded with retaliatory tariffs of up to 125 per cent on US goods. A temporary easing of tensions came in May, when both countries agreed to scale back certain tariffs during talks in Geneva. However, Washington’s latest actions, including export bans, software curbs, and visa restrictions, have sparked renewed conflict. Last week, the Trump administration said it planned to start revoking visas for Chinese students, while moving to restrict sales of chip design software to China. According to the New York Times, the US has also barred exports of critical jet engine parts and aviation technology to China. Although Trump did not provide specifics when accusing Beijing of violating the trade truce on Friday, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said China had failed to accelerate exports of critical minerals used in advanced electronics, as per Bloomberg. According to a report by Bloomberg, China has accused the United States of “seriously violating” the trade truce established in Geneva in May 2025. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce criticised the US for introducing new trade and technology restrictions, including export controls on artificial intelligence (AI) chips, curbs on chip design software sales to China, and the revocation of Chinese student visas. Beijing said these actions undermined the consensus reached between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping during their last conversation in January. “If the US insists on its way and continues to damage China’s interests, China will continue to take resolute and forceful measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” the ministry stated, as quoted by Bloomberg. The ministry further stated it “resolutely rejects these unjustified accusations” and insisted that China has strictly implemented the Geneva consensus. According to Bloomberg, last week, the US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that trade talks had stalled and hinted that a direct call between Trump and Xi might be necessary to break the deadlock. The two leaders of the world’s largest economy have spoken in January, shortly before Trump returned to the Oval Office. Despite growing tension, the US reportedly said that Trump and Xi are likely to speak on a call. US President's adviser Kevin Hassett suggested a call could happen this week, according to Bloomberg. Whether Xi will entertain the outreach remains uncertain. Beijing has repeatedly stated that any high-level engagement must be based on mutual respect and the withdrawal of what it calls “unilateral and coercive measures”. For now, with tariffs rising, visas tightening, and rhetoric intensifying, the road to détente appears steeper than ever.

Trump calls Xi ‘extremely hard to make a deal with’ as US-China trade war flares up again

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order doubling import tariffs on steel and aluminium from 25 to 50 per cent, a move that has sparked fresh concerns of a global trade flare-up. The decision, effective from June 5, has exempted the United Kingdom for now, thanks to an ongoing bilateral agreement, but other trading partners, including Canada, Mexico and the European Union, are preparing countermeasures.
US metals tariffs hiked to 50 per cent
Trump’s new order raises the stakes in an already tense global trade environment. In a proclamation signed late Tuesday, he authorised a 50 per cent duty on most imported steel and aluminium, citing the need to bolster domestic industry. “Nobody’s going to be able to steal your industry… at 50 per cent, they can no longer get over the fence,” Trump said during a rally at a US Steel plant, as quoted by Reuters. The hike marks the second major tariff escalation since March, when Trump first reimposed 25 per cent tariffs on steel and 10 per cent on aluminium, using Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, a clause that allows tariffs in the name of national security. “We started at 25 and then, after studying the data more, realised more help is needed,” said White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett at a steel conference in Washington, according to Reuters.
UK temporarily escapes the tariff blow for now
The United Kingdom has been spared, for now. Under a preliminary trade understanding known as the Economic Prosperity Deal (EPD), signed on May 8, UK metal exports will continue to face the original 25 per cent tariff, not the new 50 per cent rate. The deal is yet to be fully ratified in Parliament, and the exemption remains conditional. In the order, Trump said the UK deserved “different treatment” due to the EPD but warned that the 50 per cent tariff could still be applied on or after July 9 if the agreement does not fully materialise. Aluminium premiums in the US have more than doubled since the start of the year, with Bloomberg reporting a surge in market volatility due to the abrupt policy shift. Business leaders have raised alarms. Chad Bartusek, Director of Supply Chain at Illinois-based Drill Rod & Tool Steels, told Reuters that he woke up to a 50 per cent tariff bill of $145,000, double what he expected. “It’s one punch after another,” he said, adding that his firm has had to raise prices by up to 14 per cent and reduce workers’ hours. Economists, too, remain sceptical. Erica York, Vice President of Federal Tax Policy at the Tax Foundation, warned of broader fallout. “It’s just very foolish to double down on this type of tariff,” she told Reuters. York pointed to a 2020 analysis showing that Trump’s earlier tariffs created about 1,000 steel jobs but cost the economy 75,000 jobs in downstream industries.
What lies ahead?
As Trump’s trade deadline looms, the global metals market waits in limbo. While the UK has secured a temporary reprieve, much of the world, including close allies, continues to face stiff levies. Whether these measures ultimately protect American industry or deepen global economic fragmentation remains to be seen. For now, businesses, trade diplomats and economists alike are bracing for the next round of negotiations or the next wave of tariffs.

This decision, effective June 5, exempts the UK temporarily under a bilateral agreement.

US metals tariffs hiked to 50 per cent Trump’s new order raises the stakes in an already tense global trade environment. In a dramatic escalation of tensions between two high-profile allies, Elon Musk has publicly denounced US President Donald Trump’s flagship tax and spending bill, calling it a “disgusting abomination”. The tech mogul’s blunt criticism comes just days after his abrupt departure from the Trump administration, ending his short-lived role as head of a federal cost-cutting task force. Musk’s comments mark the clearest break yet between the Tesla CEO and the Republican president he once endorsed and worked alongside. The billionaire, who donated over $250 million to Trump’s 2024 campaign and was handpicked to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), now finds himself among the bill’s most vocal critics.
What did Musk say?

I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Taking to X on Tuesday, Musk lashed out at the legislation, saying: “This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it”, as quoted by Reuters on 3 June.

It will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden America citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt https://t.co/dHCj3pprJO— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 3, 2025

He further claimed that the legislation “will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden America citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt”, Musk wrote on X.

In November next year, we fire all politicians who betrayed the American people https://t.co/GTRc9Rjled— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 3, 2025

In another pointed remark on X, Musk warned: “In November next year, we fire all politicians who betrayed the American people."

Musk’s frustrations reportedly extended beyond the broader economic implications. According to reports, one of the specific sticking points was the denial of a proposal to have air traffic control run via his Starlink satellite system, rejected over conflict of interest and technology concerns.
What is Trump’s tax-cut and spending bill?
Passed by the House of Representatives last month by a single vote, Trump’s controversial bill is a centerpiece of his second-term agenda. It seeks to extend the 2017 tax cuts introduced during his first term, increase defence spending, and allocate billions towards mass deportation of undocumented immigrants. The legislation also raises the US debt ceiling to $4 trillion, a move that has drawn sharp rebukes from fiscal conservatives. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates the bill will add $3.8 trillion to the US federal debt, which currently stands at more than $36.2 trillion, according to Reuters. While Trump has defended the proposal as “one big, beautiful bill”, according to Reuters, critics within and outside his party are growing louder. Republican Senator Rand Paul told CBS News that the GOP “will own the debt once they vote for this” and reaffirmed his opposition to any increase in the debt ceiling. Despite the backlash, Senate Republicans are pressing ahead. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said: “We have an agenda that everybody campaigned on, most notably the president,” as reported by the BBC. He also told reporters, as quoted by Reuters: “My hope is that as [Musk] has an opportunity to further assess what this bill actually does, that he comes to a different conclusion.”
Musk’s journey: From Trump supporter to critic
Musk’s fiery condemnation is particularly striking given his recent proximity to Trump’s political and administrative machinery. A vocal supporter of Trump during the 2024 campaign, Musk contributed over $250 million to the re-election effort. He was later appointed to lead DOGE, the Department of Government Efficiency where he oversaw attempts to reform federal spending. His tenure lasted 129 days and formally ended on 31 May. Upon his departure, Trump said, “He will, always, be with us, helping all the way,” according to Reuters. Signs of strain had already begun to emerge before Musk’s exit. In an interview a week prior, he called the bill “disappointing”, according to Bloomberg, and warned that it would undermine DOGE’s objectives. He amplified that criticism after leaving the administration, with the latest comments representing his most severe rebuke yet. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, a key architect of the bill, claimed he had a 20-minute call with Musk on Monday. Speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill, Johnson said: “My friend Elon is terribly wrong… it’s a very important first start. Elon is missing it,” as quoted by the BBC. Johnson also expressed surprise at Musk’s public opposition, saying: “I just deeply regret he’s made this mistake,” according to BBC.
Republican backlash and bipartisan ripples
Other Republican lawmakers also pushed back. Thune and Johnson reiterated their commitment to the bill’s passage despite Musk’s criticism. Johnson acknowledged that the removal of electric vehicle tax credits could “have an effect” on Tesla, but insisted the bill remains “very important”, according to BBC. Meanwhile, Democrats seized on Musk’s remarks to reinforce their own objections. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said: “Even Elon Musk, who’s been part of the whole process and is one of Trump’s buddies, said the bill is bad. We can imagine how bad this bill is,” as reported by the BBC. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed Musk’s attack, stating: “The President already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill. It doesn’t change the President’s opinion. This is one big, beautiful bill, and he’s sticking to it,” Reuters reported.
A widening rift with November stakes
The fracture between Trump and Musk highlights deeper ideological divides within the Republican party, particularly around fiscal conservatism, government debt, and economic priorities. With Trump aiming for Senate passage by 4 July, the next few weeks will determine whether his legislative ambitions survive intra-party rebellion. Though Musk’s time in the Trump administration is over, his scathing assessment of the bill and his call to oust those who supported it, signal a new phase in his political engagement. For a figure once central to Trump’s cost-cutting crusade, Musk now appears to be positioning himself as its loudest dissenting voice.

Musk further claimed it would worsen the budget deficit and burden citizens with debt, urging accountability for politicians.

On May 30, Trump held a press conference in the Oval Office for Elon Musk as a farewell for his departure from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

American comedian and writer Jon Stewart did not hesitate to comment on Elon Musk, Trump's "closest buddy", slamming him on how the DOGE founder left US President Donald Trump's White House. Stewart put light on how far Musk has fallen during Trump's second term. He showed a picture of Musk at a Trump campaign event, where he was seen jumping with joy. "Look at the poor b*****d", Stewart said. “He went from this...” Stewart said, gesturing to the happy photo, “...to this.” Stewart then showed a recent picture of Musk from his farewell press conference, in which he was not smiling. “Look at this f---ing guy,” Stewart joked. “He went from tech titan, given a mandate to move fast and crush the deep state, to... guy who had a bad night in Nashville at a bar he can’t remember.” Stewart said, "He's beaten down", adding, "He’s got that look on his face that I imagine his employees normally have. Black eye, 1,000-yard stare. This dude has seen some s--t.” He further noted that Musk spent "$300 million of his own money to get Trump elected, and irreparably damaged his personal brand and almost all of his business,” adding that he’d gotten nothing of value in return. Trump’s border security adviser Tom Homan warned that he is convinced that the US will suffer a major terrorist attack because of former US president Joe Biden's immigration and border policies.Trump's border czar said there's a possibility of a 9/11 style attack conducted by migrants who illegally snuck across the southern border under Joe Biden."It's coming," he said about the possibility of 9/11-styled attack. 'Grossly distorting the facts': China blasts Trump over trade deal accusations, warns of retaliation

Harvard University is set to hold its 2025 commencement in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The graduation ceremony comes as the Trump administration continues to pressure the Ivy League school with federal funding cuts and attempts to stop the college from enrolling international students. Abraham Verghese, a physician and writer will be the speaker at Harvard’s 374th commencement. Now, the Trump administration informed Harvard University that it would have 30 days to present evidence for why it should continue to have the right to enroll foreign visa holders. In a significant development, US district court judge Allison Burroughs said she will order the Department of Homeland Security and State Department to not make any changes to Harvard’s student visa program indefinitely. While the Trump administration has tried to defuse the situation heading into a crucial court hearing for Harvard University’s international student population, the judge is moving forward with putting in place a firm court order – a preliminary injunction – after previously stepping in on an emergency basis last week to stop the Trump administration’s revocation of Harvard’s student visa program. Burroughs said, “I want to maintain the status quo,” to allow Harvard to continue hosting international students on visas at this time. Burroughs has told Harvard’s lawyers and the Justice department lawyers to work out an agreement to stop the revocation of the student visa program for the time being. “It doesn’t need to be draconian, but I want to make sure it’s worded in such a way that nothing changes,” she said. On Wednesday, President Trump suggested that Harvard cap its foreign enrollment at 15%, and said the school needs to "show us their lists" of students coming from abroad. Currently, international students make up 27.2% of the student population. "Harvard has been a disaster," . Trump said. “They're taking people from areas of the world that are very radicalized, and we don't want them making trouble in our country.” Earlier, the Donald Trump administration in the US revoked Harvard University's eligibility to admit international students. The decision has left the future of thousands of foreign students, including Indians, uncertain. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem ordered the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to terminate Harvard University's Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certification. She stated that “it is a privilege, not a right, for universities to enroll foreign students.” The DHS accused Harvard's leadership of creating an unsafe campus environment by permitting anti-American, pro-terrorist agitators to harass and physically assault individuals, including many Jewish students. It also said that Harvard has not provided details of students involved in terrorist activities and this action against the University holds them “accountable for fostering violence, antisemitism, and coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party on its campus." Post that, Harvard University filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over its decision to stop the Ivy League school from enrolling international students. According to the complaint filed in Boston federal court, the university called the White House’s move a “blatant violation” of the First Amendment of the US Constitution, warning it will have an “immediate and devastating effect for Harvard and more than 7,000 visa holders.” “With the stroke of a pen, the government has sought to erase a quarter of Harvard’s student body, international students who contribute significantly to the University and its mission,” Harvard said in its lawsuit. “Without its international students, Harvard is not Harvard,” the 389-year-old school added. The university said that it is seeking a temporary restraining order aimed at preventing the Department of Homeland Security from implementing the decision. White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson dismissed the case, which was assigned to US District Judge Allison Burroughs.

George Floyds uncertain legacy marked in US five years on

Americans on Sunday marked five years since George Floyd was killed by a US police officer, as President Donald Trump backtracks on reforms designed to tackle racism. Floyd's deadly arrest on May 25, 2020 helped launch the Black Lives Matter movement into a powerful force that sought to resolve America's deeply rooted racial issues, from police violence to systemic inequality. But since Trump's return to power in January –- he was serving his first term when Floyd died -– his administration has axed civil rights investigations and cracked down on diversity hiring initiatives. BLM, meanwhile, finds itself lacking the support it enjoyed when protesters sprawled across US cities and abroad during the Covid pandemic -- with many now agreeing the movement achieved little of substance. Some Democratic politicians, as well as UN rights chief Volker Turk, commemorated the anniversary on Sunday. "As anti-racism, inclusion efforts & law enforcement reforms face serious setbacks, we must continue advocating for racial justice & equality globally -- with greater determination & strength," Turk wrote on X. A memorial event was held this weekend at what has been named George Floyd Square, the area of Minneapolis where the 46-year-old took his final breath as police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck during an arrest. Dozens of people on Sunday visited the small junction set in a residential part of the northern US city, which is covered with protest art, including a purple mural that reads "You Changed the World, George." That optimistic message painted in 2020 is now, however, at odds with a president whose more extreme allies have suggested he pardon Chauvin, who was convicted of murdering Floyd and sentenced to more than 22 years in prison. Some experts believe Trump's re-election was partly a backlash to BLM activism, which included protests that turned to riots in some cities and calls to defund the police. Floyd's family members told AFP on Friday that they wanted people to continue pushing for reform despite the hostile political climate. "We don't need an executive order to tell us that Black lives matter," said his aunt Angela Harrelson, who wore a dark T-shirt depicting Floyd's face. "We cannot let a setback be a holdback for the great comeback. Donald Trump just didn't get the memo," she added to nods from other relatives standing beside her. Paris Stevens, a Floyd cousin, agreed: "No one can silence us anymore." ‘Easy to forget’ Protests marking Floyd's death have also been planned in a handful of other US cities, including Chicago and Dallas, but no major rallies were expected. In Minneapolis, some people cried and others laid flowers or stuffed animals by the roadside spot where Floyd's fatal arrest was filmed and shared around the world. "George Floyd may be resting in peace and power, but he's alive through everyone that shows up here," WD Foster-Graham, an author who grew up in the same neighborhood, told AFP Sunday. "It can be very easy to forget, but as one person to another, make sure we never forget and let those powers that be know we haven't forgotten, and we're not going away," the 73-year-old added. Jamie Dencklau, 30, said it was important to show that Floyd's death was not just a “moment in time.” But the nonprofit worker from Minneapolis said she was upset about Trump, who has a track record of racially charged rhetoric and heavy support from far-right figures. "It's disheartening to see that our country has elected this individual as our president, and it really makes me question how important equity and inclusivity are to our community," she said. Memorial events have been held annually since Floyd's death and the theme for this one -– "The People Have Spoken" -– was suggested by Nelson Mandela's grandson Nkosi when he visited the square, according to Floyd's aunt Harrelson. She said the defiant title was meant to reflect five years of protesting, adding that “even though it's tiresome, we go on.” Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide.
