That vessel was initially targeted last month in the Caribbean when it was suspected of transporting sanctioned oil shipments believed to be linked to Iran and Venezuela. During its flight from enforcement, the ship was tracked across the North Atlantic, with reports suggesting Russia deployed a submarine to assist in its escort. Tracking data showed the tanker abruptly shifted course southward and slowed to approximately eight knots earlier this week, placing it roughly 200 kilometers south of Iceland before US forces intervened. Southern Command reiterated that the tanker was engaged in illicit operations at the time of the interdiction. The ministry's statement, which was reported by the Tass news agency, said that a US Coast Guard vessel had been trailing the Marinera for several days, despite the tanker being located roughly 4,000 km from the US coastline. On Wednesday, maritime tracking platforms indicated that the ship was situated between Scotland and Iceland, heading north. A US official later verified that the vessel was indeed in the North Atlantic.

The head of the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement that he visited the war-torn territory to discuss post-conflict stabilisation and clarified that no US troops will be deployed to Gaza. Earlier this week, senior US officials said that about 200 troops would be deployed to operate a “civil-military coordination center” under US Central Command. The team will aid in facilitating humanitarian aid and provide logistical and security support in the territory, according to reports.“Just returned from a visit inside Gaza to inform how we are moving forward to establish a CENTCOM-led Civil-Military Coordination Center (CMCC) that will synchronize activities to support post-conflict stabilization. America's sons and daughters in uniform are answering the call to deliver peace in the Middle East in support of the Commander in Chief’s direction in this historic moment. This great effort will be achieved with no U.S. boots on the ground in Gaza,” CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper said in a statement on X.

Brad Cooper visited an Israeli army post in the Gaza Strip on Saturday to confirm that Israel Defense Forces (IDF) pulled out from the territory, where a ceasefire has been implemented after two years of conflict. This comes after the Israeli cabinet approved the deal early Friday (Oct 10) morning, roughly 24 hours after mediators announced the first phase of Donald Trump’s peace agreement. While the first phase of Trump’s 20-point plan has been approved and sparked celebrations in both Gaza and Tel Aviv, several critical issues remain unresolved regarding the long-term future of the Gaza Strip.

United States Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday (Sep 30) slammed “fat generals and admirals” and criticised diversity initiatives in the military that led to decades of decay in his address at a rare gathering of army leaders at the Marine Corps Base Quantico in Northern Virginia. Hegseth further said that he decided to fire the previous generals because they were invested in progressive ideas about diversity in the military. “It’s nearly impossible to change a culture with the same people helped create or even benefited from that culture,” he said. “If the words that you hear today make your heart sink, then you should do the honourable thing and resign.” Speaking about the reforms in the military, Hegseth said, “Colorblind, gender-neutral, merit-based; the entire promotion process, including evaluations of warfighting capabilities, is being thoroughly re-examined.” The defence secretary also said that women in combat roles will be expected to meet the same physical standards as men. “War does not care if you are a man or a woman,” Hegseth said, adding that “standards must be uniform, gender neutral, and high”, and if that meant some women didn’t qualify, “it is what it is.” “We untie the hands of our war fighters to intimidate, demoralise, hunt and kill the enemies of our country. No more politically correct and overbearing rules of engagement. Just common sense, maximum lethality and authority for war fighters,” he stated.

The United States military, in a high-stakes ground operation in Syria on Friday (Jul 25), eliminated a senior Islamic State (ISIS) leader and two of his sons, according to a statement from US Central Command (CENTCOM). The raid marks a rare deviation from the US military's usual reliance on airstrikes in the region. The senior ISIS leader has been identified as Dhiya' Zawba Muslih al-Hardani, his two adult sons, also killed in the raid, are Abdallah Dhiya al-Hardani and Abd al-Rahman Dhiya Zawba al-Hardani. CENTCOM said the three "posed a threat to US and coalition forces, as well as the new Syrian Government."
US will continue to ‘relentlessly’ pursue ISIS terrorists
In a statement, General Michael Erik Kurilla, US Central Command Commander, said that they “will continue to relentlessly pursue ISIS terrorists wherever they operate. ISIS terrorists are not safe where they sleep, where they operate, and where they hide. Alongside our partners and allies, US Central Command is committed to the enduring defeat of ISIS terrorists that threaten the region, our allies, and our homeland.” Notably, three children and three women present at the location were unharmed, according to CENTCOM. However, the organisation didn't share any further operational details — including the precise location of the raid.
Why was this a rare operation?
The US military in recent months has primarily conducted anti-ISIS operations in recent years using air power or with support from partner forces on the ground. Direct US ground raids instead of airstrikes have been far less common. The operation comes as over recent months and years the US has carried out and supported a steady tempo of anti-ISIS missions in Syria and Iraq. In May, CENTCOM reported six such operations — five in Iraq and one in Syria — which resulted in the deaths of two ISIS operatives and the capture of two others, including a senior leader.

Microsoft has halted the use of engineers based in China to provide technical support for US military cloud systems, following public outcry and an investigative report by ProPublica that exposed the practice. The revelation prompted immediate action from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who on July 18 announced a two-week review of all Pentagon cloud service contracts. The report detailed how Microsoft used engineers in China to support Department of Defense (DoD) cloud systems, with their work monitored by US-based “digital escorts”—subcontractors with security clearances but limited technical expertise. The setup raised major cybersecurity concerns, especially given that Microsoft’s systems have previously been compromised by Chinese and Russian state-linked hackers.Senator Tom Cotton, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, sent a letter to Secretary Hegseth demanding a full list of contractors using Chinese personnel and clarification on the training and capabilities of these so-called digital escorts. “The US government recognises that China’s cyber capabilities pose one of the most aggressive and dangerous threats to the United States,” Cotton wrote. “We must guard against all potential threats within our supply chain, including those from subcontractors.”
Microsoft responds, Pentagon reviews
In response to the uproar, Microsoft said on July 18 that it has revised its practices to ensure that no China-based engineering teams provide technical assistance to Pentagon clients using its Azure cloud services. “In response to concerns raised earlier this week, Microsoft has made changes to our support for US government customers,” said Frank Shaw, the company’s chief communications officer, in a statement on social platform X.The move affects Microsoft’s massive Azure division, which now accounts for more than a quarter of the company’s global revenue. Microsoft is a major US government contractor and received more than half of its $70 billion in Q1 2025 revenue from US-based clients.Defense Secretary Hegseth confirmed that China-based engineers had been involved in the support of Pentagon systems and said this would end immediately. In a video posted to X, he criticised the “legacy” system dating back to the Obama administration and pledged to ensure “China will no longer have any involvement whatsoever” in US defence cloud operations.
Cloud contracts under scrutiny
Microsoft’s involvement in Pentagon cloud services dates back to a now-cancelled $10 billion contract awarded in 2019. In 2022, the company was again selected, alongside Amazon, Google, and Oracle, for defence cloud contracts worth up to $9 billion. The ProPublica report has now triggered renewed scrutiny of all such agreements.Hegseth’s review aims to ensure that no other vendors are using foreign-based personnel in sensitive military infrastructure. “We will continue to monitor and counter all threats to our military infrastructure and online networks,” Hegseth said. ChatGPT-maker OpenAI has landed a $200 million contract from the United States Department of Defense to develop cutting-edge artificial intelligence tools for military applications, the Pentagon confirmed on Monday. It is the company’s most high-profile defence contract to date, placing OpenAI, originally a consumer-facing tech firm, at the heart of America’s military–AI transformation. “Under this award, the performer will develop prototype frontier AI capabilities to address critical national security challenges in both warfighting and enterprise domains,” the Pentagon stated. The work will be carried out primarily in and around Washington, with an estimated completion date of July 2026.
Why it matters
The deal underscores Washington’s push to harness frontier AI systems for battlefield readiness, faster intelligence synthesis, and advanced decision-making, as strategic rivalries with China and Russia intensify. It also marks OpenAI’s formal entry into the defence establishment, a major evolution for a company better known for revolutionising education and corporate workflows with tools like ChatGPT and Codex. As of March 2025, OpenAI had 500 million weekly active users. The company said this month that its annualised revenue run rate had surged to $10 billion, on track to meet its 2025 targets amid soaring global AI adoption.
Defence AI gets a Silicon Valley upgrade
The contract follows guidance issued by the White House’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) in April, encouraging federal agencies to foster a competitive American AI sector. National security and defence systems were explicitly exempted from the tighter AI oversight — allowing agencies like the Pentagon to move quickly. That exemption is now being leveraged to formalise OpenAI’s military partnership. Reuters has reported that OpenAI is in talks to raise as much as $40 billion in a new funding round led by Japan’s SoftBank, at a $300 billion valuation — underlining investor confidence in its long-term strategic relevance.
The bigger picture
The US military has long experimented with AI through its research arm, DARPA. But this new agreement represents a turning point — where private AI leaders are brought directly into core national security missions. While technical specifics remain classified, the AI tools are expected to support capabilities such as autonomous decision-making, threat detection, secure communications, and multilingual data analysis. The move is likely to be watched closely in Beijing and Moscow, both of whom have ramped up investments in military-grade AI.The Pentagon’s new AI contract is not just about innovation, it’s about preserving a strategic edge in what many now call the AI arms race. As of March 2025, OpenAI had 500 million weekly active users. The company said this month that its annualised revenue run rate had surged to $10 billion, on track to meet its 2025 targets amid soaring global AI adoption. Defence AI gets a Silicon Valley upgrade The contract follows guidance issued by the White House’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) in April, encouraging federal agencies to foster a competitive American AI sector. The bigger picture The US military has long experimented with AI through its research arm, DARPA. But this new agreement represents a turning point — where private AI leaders are brought directly into core national security missions. While technical specifics remain classified, the AI tools are expected to support capabilities such as autonomous decision-making, threat detection, secure communications, and multilingual data analysis. The move is likely to be watched closely in Beijing and Moscow, both of whom have ramped up investments in military-grade AI. The Pentagon’s new AI contract is not just about innovation, it’s about preserving a strategic edge in what many now call the AI arms race. (With inputs from the agencies)

The US Justice Department deliberately fuelled Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) conspiracy theories for decades, misleading the public and even their own personnel. In recent years, theories have been built and circulated about Area 51 military base, a classified US Air Force facility in the Nevada desert, including stories of orb-like UFOs that US military pilots have spotted and mysterious sightings around military bases.Far-right Republicans have also accused the purported "deep state" of hiding UFO-related truth from the public as well as the government.According to the Wall Street Journal, a Department of Defence review found that in the 1980s, an Air Force colonel was sent on a mission to spread false information, hence creating rumours about it.He then visited a bar near Area 51 and gave the owner fake photos of flying saucers, which raised new UFO rumours around the secretive military base. The now-retired colonel later confessed to Pentagon investigators, saying that the mission was aimed to divert attention from the real purpose of the site, that was, testing the then-secret F-117 Nighthawk stealth aircraft.According to officials, embedding the programme within alien folklore was the best way to shield it from Soviet surveillance during the Cold War.The US defence agencies allegedly used these myths several times to protect sensitive military developments. All this came into light when in July 2022, the Pentagon established the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) to investigate Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs) across air, sea, and space.Sean Kirkpatrick, the first director of the AARO, reviewed government documents from 1945 and interrogated current and former military officers. After the probe, it was found that the US military intentionally planted UFO conspiracy theories, including those linked to Area 51.The Pentagon shared disinformation, including photoshopped images of flying saucers. Also read: $1000 for every US baby? Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered a comprehensive review of “military fitness, body composition and grooming” across all the US armed forces on Wednesday (Mar 12).
The directive comes after the Biden administration loosened restrictions on various rules, including grooming and hairstyle for military service members. This also includes body fat percentage standards for new recruits.

'High standards make US military greatest'

In the Department of Defence memo, Hegseth wrote, “High standards are what made the United States military the greatest fighting force on the planet.”

Generally, service members are banned from keeping beards unless they have a medical or religious exemption.
Under the Biden administration, the grooming standards in the army were relaxed. As part of an effort to be “more diverse” and “inclusive”, women were permitted to wear earrings and dye their hair, while men could wear nail polish.
The Biden administration also raised the permitted body fat in the US Air Force allowed for new recruits form 20 per cent to 26 per cent for males and from 28 per cent to 36 per cent for females.

A new Pentagon memo says that openly transgender individuals will no longer be permitted to serve in the US military and will soon be discharged from duty. This decision signals a major reversal from previous policies that prohibited discrimination based on gender identity.
The memo was revealed on Wednesday as part of an ongoing lawsuit by LGBTQ+ rights organisations challenging an executive order issued by President Donald Trump last month.

Mandatory removal process outlined

According to the memo, the Department of Defense must implement a process to identify transgender service members within 30 days. A further 30 days after that, the discharge process must begin.
"It is the policy of the United States Government to establish high standards for service member readiness, lethality, cohesion, honesty, humility, uniformity, and integrity," the document, dated 26 February, read.
It continued, "This policy is inconsistent with the medical, surgical, and mental health constraints on individuals with gender dysphoria or who have a current diagnosis or history of, or exhibit symptoms consistent with, gender dysphoria."

An earlier memo from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had already said that individuals with a history of gender dysphoria would be barred from enlisting, while also insisting they would be "treated with dignity and respect." However, the new policy extends this restriction to current service members, requiring their removal if they have gender dysphoria or a history of it.
The memo does allow for rare exceptions. Transgender service members who play a direct role in “warfighting capabilities” may be retained if the government determines there is a "compelling" reason for them to remain.

However, even if granted a waiver, transgender personnel will be subject to strict limitations. They will not be allowed access to "intimate spaces" such as changing rooms, bathrooms, and showers designated for the gender they transitioned to.
Additionally, they will be required to meet the physical fitness standards associated with their sex assigned at birth, and their official military records will be updated accordingly.
