Donald Trump signs order to ban transgender troops

US President Donald Trump is expected to sign multiple executive orders on Monday (Jan 27) to reshape the military.
Among military-related orders, the first one is to remove diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives from the Department of Defense.
Another order would ban transgender service members from serving in the US armed forces, CNN reported. A third will reinstate service members dismissed for refusing COVID-19 vaccinations. In his inauguration speech, Trump called the dismissals "unjust expulsions."

Approximately 8,000 military personnel were discharged over vaccine refusals during the pandemic, but only 43 were reinstated before Trump returned to the White House.
Shortly after he arrived at the Pentagon on Monday, Hegseth told reporters that there were “more executive orders coming.”
“Today, there are more executive orders coming, … on removing DEI inside the Pentagon, reinstating troops who were pushed out because of Covid mandates, iron dome for America — this is happening quickly, and as the secretary of defence, it’s an honour to salute smartly as I did as a junior officer and now as the secretary of defence to ensure these orders are complied with rapidly and quickly,” Hegseth said.

Removal of DEI initiatives from the US military

The removal of DEI initiatives was a major campaign promise that Trump began implementing immediately after assuming office last week. DEI programmes aim to encourage participation from individuals of diverse backgrounds in workplaces.
Shortly after taking office, Trump directed all federal employees involved in DEI initiatives to be placed on paid administrative leave. According to the White House, these staff members had to be on leave by 17:00 EST (22:00 GMT) the next day, after which the offices and programmes were closed.

Trump labelled DEI initiatives as "dangerous, demeaning and immoral" in an official order. A White House source confirmed to CBS that the executive orders will ban practices that promote discriminatory race- or sex-based preferences in the military, Department of Defense, or the Department of Homeland Security.
The remaining DEI-related structures within these departments will also be dismantled. Additionally, military service academies, such as West Point and the US Air Force Academy, will undergo a review of their curricula for content perceived as "radical" DEI or gender ideologies.

For the first time, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) intercepted two Russian and two Chinese nuclear-capable strategic bombers flying together near the Alaska region, on Wednesday (July 24), according to US defence officials.

For the first time, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) intercepted two Russian and two Chinese nuclear-capable strategic bombers flying together near the Alaska region, on Wednesday (July 24), according to US defence officials. "The Russian and PRC aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace. This Russian and PRC activity in the Alaska ADIZ (Air defence identification zone) is not seen as a threat, and NORAD will continue to monitor competitor activity near North America and meet presence with presence," a statement from NORAD said. The Russian TU-95 Bear and Chinese H-6 bombers did not enter the United States or Canada-controlled airspace, NORAD, a joint bi-national command between the two nations, said. According to the defence officials, US F-16 and F-35 fighter planes and Canadian CF-18 fighter jets conducted the intercept. 'Not aimed at third parties' Chinese and Russian air forces conducted a “joint strategic aerial patrol in the relevant airspace of the Bering Sea” on Thursday (July 25), said China's defence ministry. The ministry also said this joint patrol was part of an annual cooperation plan between the militaries of Moscow and Beijing. The spokesperson for China's defence ministry, Zhang Xiaogang, said that this is the eighth such exercise conducted by the militaries of the two countries since 2019. Watch | Netanyahu in US: Some Democrats boycott Israel PM's Congress address, protests outside Capitol Hill × Zhang said that the exercise was aimed at “further testing and enhancing the level of cooperation between the two air forces, as well as deepening strategic mutual trust and practical cooperation between the two countries.” “This action is not aimed at third parties, it is in line with relevant international laws and international practices and has nothing to do with the current international and regional situation,” he added. While the presence of Russian planes in the Alaskan air defence identification zone is common, Chinese planes are adding a new layer of complexity to the situation. Russian flights into Alaska’s ADIZ are not uncommon. In May, Russia flew four aircraft into Alaska’s ADIZ, which NORAD said “occurs regularly.” Also read: Russian military helicopter Mi-28 crashes, crew killed However, the presence of Chinese aircraft appears to be a new development. General Gregory Guillot, the commander of US Northern Command, in March, said that due to China's continued drive northward, he anticipated seeing aircraft in the Arctic "as soon as this year potentially." “What I have seen is a willingness and a desire by the Chinese to act up there,” Guillot said at a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee. “We have seen them in the maritime. We have seen them under the cloud of technical or scientific research, but we think it is certainly multi-mission, including military. And then I expect to see air activity in the Alaska part of the Arctic as soon as this year, potentially," he added. (With inputs from agencies)

Niger’s ruling junta on Saturday (Mar 16) said that it has revoked its military cooperation agreement with the United States “with immediate effect”. The agreement allowed American military personnel and civilian staff on the country’s soil.

‘Condescending attitude’

The decision comes days after a delegation of American officials led by Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Phee visited Niger along with General Michael Langley, head of the US Africa Command.

Junta spokesperson Colonel Amadou Abdramane speaking on television in the West African nation said that the recent visit by the US delegation did not follow diplomatic protocol as they were not informed about the composition of the team, date of their arrival, and agenda.

“Niger regrets the intention of the American delegation to deny the sovereign Nigerian people the right to choose their partners and types of partnerships capable of truly helping them fight against terrorism,” said Abdramane, as quoted by Reuters.

He added, “Also, the government of Niger forcefully denounces the condescending attitude accompanied by the threat of retaliation from the head of the American delegation towards the Nigerien government and people.”

According to the junta spokesperson, the officials discussed the current military transition in the country, military cooperation between Niger and the US, and Niger’s choice of partners in the fight against militants linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State.

The ruling junta in Niger seized power last year and has since kicked out the French and other European forces from the country and turned to Russia for support. The country’s neighbours Mali and Burkina Faso have taken similar steps in recent years.

As of 2023, there were around 1,100 American troops in Niger which operated out of two bases, including a drone base worth $100 million known as Air Base 201, built near Agadez in central Niger.

Since 2018, the base has been used to target Islamic State militants and Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM), an al Qaeda-linked group.

As of December, the US reportedly had some 650 personnel working in Niger, including troops stationed at the major drone base.

In his statement, Abdramane noted that the status and presence of American troops in Niger was illegal and violated their constitutional and democratic rules since, according to him, it was unilaterally imposed on the African nation in 2012.

However, he stopped short of asking the US troops to leave.

Niger is not aware of the number of US civilians and troops or even the amount of equipment deployed on its soil, said Abdramane, but said that the American military was under no obligation to respond to any request for help against the militants.

“In light of all the above, the government of Niger, revokes with immediate effect the agreement concerning the status of United States military personnel and civilian employees of the American department of defence on the territory of the Republic of Niger,” said the junta spokesperson.

Red Sea crisis: US military says it destroyed drones near Yemen

The US Department of Defense on Monday (Jan 29) identified three US soldiers who were killed in a deadly drone strike on a US military outpost in Jordan. The three fallen soldiers—William Rivers, 46, of Carrollton, Georgia; Specialist Kennedy Sanders, 24, of Waycross, Georgia; and Specialist Breonna Moffett, 23, of Savannah, Georgia—were assigned to the 718th Engineer Company, a US Army Reserve unit based out of Fort Moore, Georgia.

Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh said Monday at least 40 more people were injured in the attack, a number which is likely to increase as some others are showing symptoms of traumatic brain injury. Of those, at least eight were taken to the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center.

Who was William Rivers?

William Rivers was enlisted in the Army Reserve in 2011 as an Interior Electrician or 12R. Following the completion of his advanced individual training, Rivers was first assigned to the 990th Engineer Company at Fort McGuire-Dix in New Jersey.

In 2018, he also completed a nine-month rotation to Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. New Jersey Senator Cory Booker in a statement expressed grief over the killing, saying, “His death is a profound loss to his family, friends, colleagues, and our entire country, and a reminder of the heavy debt we owe to our military families for their sacrifice.”

Specialist Kennedy Ladon Sanders was also killed in strikes on the military outpost on Sunday (Jan 28). On Monday, Ware County leaders gathered to issue a proclamation honouring the 24-year-old fallen soldier. All flags within the Waycross city were flown at half-mast in her memory.

New Jersey Senator Cory Booker in a statement expressed grief over the killing, saying, “His death is a profound loss to his family, friends, colleagues, and our entire country, and a reminder of the heavy debt we owe to our military families for their sacrifice.” Watch: West Asia Crisis: Three US soldiers killed, 34 injured in drone strike in Jordan × Governor Phil Murphy talked about signing an executive order later this week, lowering flags at half-staff to honour Rivers. Who was Kennedy Sanders? Specialist Kennedy Ladon Sanders was also killed in strikes on the military outpost on Sunday (Jan 28). On Monday, Ware County leaders gathered to issue a proclamation honouring the 24-year-old fallen soldier. All flags within the Waycross city were flown at half-mast in her memory. Two US Navy SEALs who went missing during an operation to seize Iranian weapons bound for Yemen's Houthi rebels have been declared dead after a 10-day search failed to locate them, the US military said on Sunday.

The Central Command (CENTCOM) had previously said that two SEALs who were reported as lost at sea were involved in the January 11 operation, in which the elite special operations personnel boarded a dhow off the coast of Somalia and seized missile components made in Iran.

"We regret to announce that after a 10-day exhaustive search, our two missing US Navy SEALs have not been located and their status has been changed to deceased," CENTCOM said in a statement.

"The search and rescue operation for the two Navy SEALs reported missing during the boarding of an illicit dhow carrying Iranian advanced conventional weapons... concluded and we are now conducting recovery operations," the statement said.

CENTCOM described the capture of the missile components as "the first seizure of lethal, Iranian-supplied advanced conventional weapons... to the Houthis since the beginning of Houthi attacks against merchant ships in November 2023."

That month, the Houthis began targeting ships in the Red Sea they claimed were linked to Israel -- attacks they said were in support of Palestinians in Gaza, where Israeli forces are battling Hamas.

The United States and Britain carried out strikes on dozens of rebel targets earlier this month, and American forces have since hit a number of missiles that Washington says were ready to launch and posed a threat to both civilian and military vessels.

The Houthis -- who declared American and British interests to be legitimate targets -- are still undeterred, and have continued to carry out attacks on ships.

United States Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, on Saturday (Jan 7) released a statement taking “full responsibility” for failing to disclose a recent and ongoing week-long hospitalisation following reports that the White House was not informed about it until at least Thursday morning.

At least one official has told US media that the Biden administration was not informed for days that US Defence Secretary had been hospitalised. Austin, 70, was admitted to the Walter Reed Medical Center on Monday due to complications following surgery, the reason for which remains shrouded in secrecy.

The statement comes amid reports that President Joe Biden was in the dark that Austin was ill and unable to carry out his duties during this time.

Week-long hospitalisation hidden

The 70-year-old was admitted on Monday (Jan 1) to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for what the Pentagon has said were “complications following a recent elective medical procedure.”

The Department of Defense waited until Friday (Dec 5) evening to make the announcement, a breach of standard protocol at a time when Washington is embroiled in two wars – the Israel-Hamas war and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Pentagon spokesperson said that its chief resumed “full duties” Friday evening, but remained in the hospital.

Several American media reports citing sources have also claimed that not only was the hospitalisation hidden from the public but also the US president for days.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, an American official told Reuters that Biden was only informed on Thursday evening, a day before the Pentagon released the statement.

However, according to a second US official as per Reuters, Biden maintained confidence in Austin and the two spoke on Saturday evening.

“I recognize I could have done a better job ensuring the public was appropriately informed. I commit to doing better,” said Austin, in a statement.

He added, “But this is important to say: this was my medical procedure, and I take full responsibility for my decisions about disclosure.” Austin said he will be “returning to the Pentagon soon.”

Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks was prepared to step in during Austin’s illness, and made some routine decisions on his behalf during the time, a Defense Department spokesperson told AFP.

Notably, Austin sits below Biden at the top of the chain of command of the US military and his duties often require him to be available at a moment’s notice to respond to any national security-related crisis.

Secrecy garners backlash

Politico was among the first of many media outlets to report that Austin had been in the hospital for three days before Pentagon officials told National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and other top White House officials.

According to Politico, Sullivan then informed Biden. It also said that Congress found out about Austin’s hospitalisation 15 minutes before Friday evening’s public statement.

The apparent cover-up of Austin’s hospitalisation has led Republican lawmakers to criticise Democrat Biden’s administration and have since demanded an explanation.

Top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator Roger Wicker, accused the Pentagon of failing to inform Congress immediately about such matters and said that the incident further eroded the public’s trust in the Biden administration.

He also cited past failures of the current administration to quickly disclose information about national security incidents, including the appearance of a Chinese spy balloon over the US last year.

“When one of the country's two National Command Authorities is unable to perform their duties, military families, Members of Congress, and the American public deserve to know the full extent of the circumstances,” said Wicker in a statement.

The Pentagon Press Association which comprises of journalists who cover the Defense Department, in a statement expressed “significant concerns” over the apparent cover-up, saying that Austin was a public figure who had no claim to medical privacy in such a situation.

It added, “At a time when there are growing threats to U.S. military service members in the Middle East and the U.S. is playing key national security roles in the wars in Israel and Ukraine, it is particularly critical for the American public to be informed about the health status and decision-making ability of its top defense leader.”

The US Congress on Thursday (Dec 14) approved a staggering defence budget of $886 billion for 2024 as more than two-thirds of the US House of Representatives voted in favour of the defence policy bill. Congress also extended a controversial overseas electronic surveillance system widely used by US intelligence services.

The bill, which was adopted in the House of Representatives after a vote in the Senate on Wednesday, has also authorised policies such as aid for Ukraine. The mentioned military aid programme to Ukraine allows the gradual release of $300 million for Kyiv.

The amount of $300 million is still less than the separate $61 billion requested by the US and Ukrainian presidents from Congress by the end of the year. The massive package has not been approved and is being debated.

An anti-ship cruise missile launched from Houthi-controlled Yemen struck a commercial tanker vessel and caused a fire, said the United States Central Command (CENTCOM). This comes days after the Iran-backed Houthi rebels threatened to target any ships near Israel, which is engaged in a war with Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.

The US military reported that there was damage but no casualties due to the incident which took place on Monday (Dec 11).

What happened?

The attack on what is reported to be a Norwegian-flagged tanker STRINDA took place around 111 kilometres north of the Bab al-Mandab Strait connecting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden around 2100 GMT, a US official told Reuters.

A second US official told the news agency that the ship was able to move under its own power in the hours after the attack. “The STRINDA reported damage causing a fire on-board, but no casualties at this time,” said the CENTCOM, which oversees American forces in the Middle East.

“There were no US ships in the vicinity at the time of the attack, but the USS MASON responded to the M/T STRINDA's mayday call and is currently rendering assistance,” it said in a statement.

The STRINDA is a Norway-flagged chemical tanker and is owned by Mowinckel Chemical Tankers, according to Reuters. The report citing data from ship tracking firm Kpler said that the STRINDA had loaded vegetable oil and biofuels in Malaysia and was headed for Venice, Italy.

Houthis claim responsibility for attack

The recent incident involving the Norwegian tanker comes after Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels, on Saturday (Dec 9) said that they would target all ships heading to Israel, regardless of their nationality, and warned international shipping companies against dealing in Israeli ports.

The threat was issued amid Israel’s ongoing war with the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza and the Houthis which control much of Yemen, says its attacks are a show of support for the Palestinians.

The Iran-backed group later claimed responsibility for the attack calling it a "qualitative military operation" against a tanker which was carrying oil to Israel.

"The naval forces of the Yemeni Armed Forces carried out a qualitative military operation against the Norwegian ship Strinda, which was loaded with oil" bound for Israel, said the military spokesman Yahya Saree, as quoted by news agency AFP.
