President Biden was in Vietnam on Sunday to celebrate an improvement in Washington-Hanoi relations. The goal of the visit to Hanoi is to establish a "comprehensive strategic partnership" with the Vietnamese, a symbolic but important status that the US has long wanted. Since taking office, Mr. Biden has worked to strengthen ties with a number of Southeast Asian countries due to their strategic importance as a line of defense against escalating Chinese aggression in the Indo-Pacific

A seven-year-old girl, Aspen Brown, of Paragould City in the US state of Arkansas, found a sparkling 2.95-carat golden brown diamond while visiting a state park. The park while making the announcement in a press release said that Brown was visiting the park with her dad and grandmother to celebrate her birthday on September 1 when she tumbled on the diamond, a perfect gift for the little one.

She visited Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro where she found the second-largest diamond registered by a park guest this year. It is topped only by a 3.29-carat brown diamond discovered in March.

Luther Brown, the girl's dad said, “She got hot and wanted to sit down for a minute, so she walked over to some big rocks by the fence line. Next thing I know, she was running to me, saying ‘Dad! Dad! I found one!’”

“Aspen’s diamond has a golden-brown color and a sparkling luster. It is a complete crystal, with no broken facets and a small crevice on one side, created when the diamond was formed,” said Waymon Cox, assistant park superintendent. “It’s certainly one of the most beautiful diamonds I’ve seen in recent years.”

China's government has broadened its ban on iPhones and Apple products, impacting local government workers and state-owned companies.

This move comes as part of Beijing's effort to reduce its dependence on US technology amid escalating geopolitical tensions between the US and China, as reported by the Guardian.

Expanding the iPhone ban

The initial ban on iPhones in government workplaces began to gain momentum when several agencies instructed employees not to bring their iPhones to work. Bloomberg reported that this ban was expected to expand further, extending to state-owned companies.

Nikkei reported that some state-owned companies are prohibiting employees who work with trade secrets from bringing their iPhones, Apple Watches, or AirPods to work starting next month. This move underscores China's concerns about what it deems the security risks posed by using Apple devices.

Reducing dependence on US tech

China's actions are seen as a response to its growing unease with dependence on US technology. The ban on iPhones and Apple products reflects Beijing's broader strategy of reducing reliance on foreign-made tech products.

The news of the expanded iPhone ban had a notable impact on Apple's stock prices. Apple shares dropped more than six per cent over two days, though they rebounded slightly on the third day. China represents a significant market for Apple, generating nearly a fifth of its revenue. Despite these losses, analysts like Erik Woodring believe that the impact on Apple's revenue will be limited to around four per cent.

Apple's production in China

Apple's production remains heavily centred in China, with approximately 90 per cent of its products manufactured in the country. Key suppliers like Foxconn, with its massive factories in China, play a crucial role in Apple's supply chain. However, due to political instability and pandemic disruptions, Apple has accelerated plans to diversify production to other countries, including Vietnam and India.

China expands ban on iPhones, Apple products amid geopolitical tensions with US

US President Joe Biden arrives at this weekend's G20 meeting in India with a bold offer for the global south. As China's economy faces challenges, president Biden is armed with cash for the world bank and promises of sustained US engagement. President Biden's strategy centers around reform proposals for the world bank and increased funding for climate and infrastructure aid in developing nations.

US challenges China's belt and road

A new survey reveals that 60% to 80% of NRIs from U.S, UK, Canada, Australia and Singapore want to return to India after retirement. Is it for financial reasons, emotional reasons or both? Priyanka Sharma tells you more.

Gravitas: Most NRIs Want To Return To India, Here's Why

As U.S. President Joe Biden brings an offer to the “Global South” to this weekend’s Group of 20 (G20) conference in India, he carries the message indicating that, no matter what happens to the Chinese economy, the United States can assist support development in China’s place.

Biden hopes to persuade fast-growing economies in Africa, Latin America, and Asia that there is an alternative to China’s Belt and Road project, which has funnelled billions of dollars to developing countries but left many of them deeply in debt. Biden will be armed with money for the World Bank and pledges of sustained US engagement.

At least one thing will work in his favour: Chinese President Xi Jinping won’t be present at the summit.

Although Biden expressed his disappointment, the absence of Xi with China’s economy struggling, provides Washington with an opportunity to shift the agenda of a political club it has tried to control.

In order to free up hundreds of billions of dollars in additional funds for grants and loans, Biden’s plan for the World Bank reform and increased funding for the lender’s infrastructure and climate help in developing countries are at the centre of his proposal.

In addition to past efforts by the United States and its close allies to generate $600 billion by 2027 in public and private funding for the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment, in an attempt to emerge as an alternative to the Belt and Road that does not include China, the White House is asking Congress for $3.3 billion.

Zack Cooper, a senior fellow focused on Asia at the American Enterprise Institute said, “Xi’s absence from the G20 does give the United States an opening, which could be compounded by the challenges that China's economic downturn will have for Belt and Road spending.”

“But the question ... is whether the United States will be able to step up,” he further added.

Rapid expansion and excessive debt

Chinese Premier Li Qiang will serve as China’s representative at the G20 summit, where global leaders are grappling with declining economic growth and the looming risk of a property debt crisis. Russian President Vladimir Putin has opted out of attending the event, instead delegating Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

According to the IMF’s projections, regions such as the Middle East, Central Asia, developing nations in Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa are expected to achieve robust GDP growth ranging from 3.2 per cent to 5.0 per cent next year. This pace outpaces the modest 1 per cent growth forecast for the United States and the 3 per cent global average.

Nevertheless, these regions confront significant hurdles in realising their growth potential, notably as climate change strains outdated infrastructure, much of which dates back to the colonial era.

The combination of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, surging inflation, and rising U.S. interest rates has created mounting concerns regarding the sustainability of these countries’ debt loads. This has fuelled fears reminiscent of the Asian financial crisis that prompted the establishment of the G20 in 1999.

‘Taking sides’

Biden’s foreign policy is founded on the principles of confronting Russia’s actions in Ukraine, managing competition with China, and rejuvenating U.S. alliances that were overlooked by his predecessor, Trump, who is likely to be the Democratic candidate’s Republican rival in the 2024 presidential election.

While these endeavours have yielded positive results with traditional U.S. allies, they have garnered less support from developing nations, including Brazil, India, and South Africa. These countries have been striving to avoid being caught in the crossfire of Washington’s disputes with Beijing and Moscow while simultaneously seeking increased Western investment.

Khulu Mbatha, a former foreign policy advisor to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, emphasised the need to maintain a neutral stance, stating, "We must have the ability to navigate without aligning with either side, much like our approach to the Ukraine conflict."

On the other hand, Xi is also exploring new avenues to engage with the developing world. He recently hosted a meeting of Central Asian leaders and discussed development initiatives in May. Additionally, at the BRICS summit in South Africa last month, he underscored the vitality of the Chinese economy.

The BRICS group, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is a relatively new alliance compared to the G20. It operates independently of Washington and is planning to expand its membership to include Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina, and the United Arab Emirates.

Xi is also anticipated to attend an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco in November, where he may have an opportunity to meet with Biden.

US Republican Governor from the state of Florida, Ron DeSantis, on Thursday (September 7) got into a heated argument with an audience member during a press conference, who blamed him for the racially motivated mass shooting that left three Black people dead in Jacksonville, last month.

What happened?

According to reports, the exchange which lasted not more than three minutes, started out cordial with both DeSantis and the unidentified man thanking each other for their military service. However, the unidentified man went on to accuse DeSantis of enacting policies “that hurt people like myself and the people that I love,” including his children.
