For three years, the U.S. government has been tied in knots over the origins of the coronavirus pandemic, frustrated that China’s hindrance of investigations and unwillingness to look critically at its own research have obscured what intelligence agencies can learn about whether the virus escaped from a lab.

Following reports that China, one of the company’s major markets, had prohibited government personnel from using iPhones as Beijing intensifies its continuing tech war with the US, Apple shares plummeted during after-hours trading on Thursday, following the company’s greatest single day loss in a month, according to a report by Forbes.

In after-hours trading, Apple shares were down 2.62 per cent at 5:01 a.m., according to the report. This fall came after a 3.6 per cent drop in New York on Wednesday, which Bloomberg reports was Apple's greatest single-day share price drop in just over a month. This decline defied a general upward trend for tech equities this year, during which the business had increased by 46 per cent.

It follows Wednesday’s claims that China had forbidden central government employees from using or bringing iPhones into the office, as well as this week’s launch of a new smartphone from Chinese company Huawei that may pose a threat to Apple’s dominant market share.

Presently, Apple is widely regarded in China, but it is facing criticism on several fronts. The unveiling of a high-speed competitor gadget from Huawei and the rumoured ban on iPhones in government buildings are two actions that could spell disaster. It might hurt sales in a crucial market that has been vital to the business’ success lately and contributed to the $74 billion in income it brought in previous year.

Apart from sales, Apple is at risk due to its dependence on Chinese manufacturing (nearly all major devices are made there), and the possible hostility from Beijing signalled by the ban could significantly impede its worldwide supply chain.

It is unclear how strictly Beijing’s iPhone ban would be enforced by the authorities. The Wall Street Journal, which broke the news of the prohibition, noted that it was unknown how broad it would apply and that it was an enlargement of a previous limitation that had been in effect at a small number of government agencies for years. While noting that certain central government authorities had received similar instructions, it stated that the order's reach was unknown.

Bloomberg hinted at a far wider extent when it confirmed the news on Thursday; both publications cited unnamed persons knowledgeable with the situation. According to Bloomberg, restrictions would apply to “a plethora of state-owned enterprises and other government-controlled organisations,” a designation that may include a broad range of institutions given Beijing’s influence over society, government, and the economy.

Apple’s shares plummet after Beijing ban on iPhones: Report

The United States and Saudi Arabia are negotiating to obtain metals in Africa that are required to support the two nations as they make the transition to alternative energy sources, a source-based report in The Wall Street Journal noted.

As per the report, a state-backed Saudi enterprise would purchase stakes in $15 billion worth of mining assets in African nations like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea, and Namibia, granting U.S. businesses the opportunity to purchase some of the production.

For supply of cobalt, lithium, and other metals used in electric car batteries, laptops, and cellphones, the U.S. is racing with China.

Saudi Arabian Mining Co (Ma'aden) and the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) acquired 10 per cent of Brazilian Vale’s base metal unit in a similar deal in July, while American investment group Engine No. 1 acquired 3 per cent.

The newspaper reported that the PIF contacted Congo in June about investing $3 billion, through its joint venture with Ma’aden, into the country's cobalt, copper, and tantalum industries.

Manara -- the joint venture between the PIF and Ma'aden -- is also concentrating on nickel, lithium, and iron ore.

The White House is looking for financial support from other sovereign wealth funds in the area, but according to the Journal, negotiations with Saudi Arabia have advanced the most.

Amazon Inc. has been accused by the US Labour Board prosecutors of enforcing unlawful confidentiality requirements on its employees, which may eventually lead the business to modify its confidentiality policies, as per a Bloomberg report.

The regional director for the National Labour Relations Board in Seattle said in a complaint filed on Monday that Amazon had broken the law by making a confidentiality agreement a requirement of employment for a worker on its drone programme.

The complaint stated that the agreement forbade the disclosure of "business and financial information" as well as details of the company's "techniques, technology, practises, operations, and methods," even if the information is not labelled as secret.

Amazon was charged with infringing rights granted by federal workplace legislation, according to the complaint, which was submitted on behalf of the labour board's general counsel. It was claimed that this impacts workers at all of the company's US facilities.

Workers' freedom to discuss their working conditions with one another, with or without a union, is protected under the federal labour legislation.

Members of the National Labour Relations Board (NLRB) in Washington, where Democrats are in the majority, voted in August to create a new standard that makes it more difficult for businesses to defend workplace handbook policies that agency officials fear may have a chilling effect on workers' rights.

Regional NLRB directors file complaints with the agency, which are reviewed by agency judges whose decisions can be challenged in federal court after being reviewed by labour board members in Washington, DC. The government is unable to hold executives accountable for violations or levy punitive damages on businesses, but it can order them to amend any legally incompliant procedures.

In an interview, Cheddi Skeete, the former drone project manager who first brought the matter to the NLRB, expressed his concern about how excessively broad secrecy restrictions prevent workers from networking and job-hunting for fear of upsetting their current employers.

Skeete said he thinks the NLRB will assist in guaranteeing a fair balance between employers' need for privacy and employees' need to be allowed to discuss their job. Skeete filed a second discrimination and retaliation action against Amazon earlier this year. This might transform the corporate and technological landscapes, he told Bloomberg.

Republican US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday (Sep 12) said that he is directing a House committee to open an impeachment inquiry into Democratic President Joe Biden over his family’s business dealings. The move, set to further divide American lawmakers as they continue to struggle to pass legislation to avoid a government shutdown, also comes ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

What did McCarthy say?

McCarthy said the House Oversight Committee’s investigation so far has found a “culture of corruption” around the Biden family, in reference to the probe sought by Republicans into dealings of the incumbent president’s son, Hunter Biden.

“These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption, and they warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives,” said McCarthy, during a press conference at the Capitol.

“I am directing our House committee to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden,” McCarthy said, alleging that the Democratic president had lied to the American people about his son’s foreign business dealings.

He added, “We will go where the evidence takes us.”

The announcement also comes amid mounting pressure on McCarthy from the Republican party’s right flank to take action over Hunter’s business dealings when his father was serving as the vice president under Barack Obama and has also been a constant target for the GOP.

Three committees will begin gathering evidence of possible financial misconduct, said McCarthy.

McCarthy’s dilemma

Republicans, who now narrowly control the House, have repeatedly accused Biden of profiting while he served as VP from his son’s foreign business ventures, but have not reportedly provided any substantial evidence for their claim.

While no US president has been removed from office by impeachment, the procedure has now become commonplace.

The House, then controlled by Democrats, impeached former US president and now Republican frontrunner Donald Trump in 2019 and 2021. He was acquitted both times after the impeachment resolution failing to gain a majority in the Senate.

It is reported that some hardline Republicans have threatened to remove McCarthy as the speaker of the House if he does not back impeachment efforts against Biden.

It is also worth noting that McCarthy’s decision was not preceded by a House vote, which is not necessary but can add legitimacy to the impeachment effort.

This also comes as the House Speaker is struggling to pass legislation needed to avoid a federal government shutdown at the end of the month.

The US government funding will end on September 30 – the end of the federal fiscal year – before which Congress must pass new funding bills or risk a shutdown and the interruption of government services.

White House responds

The move has been called “extreme politics at its worst,” by White House spokesman for oversight and investigations, Ian Sams, on social media. He also said that the Republicans have turned up no evidence of wrongdoing.

“Speaker McCarthy shouldn’t cave to the extreme, far-right members who are threatening to shut down the government unless they get a baseless, evidence-free impeachment of President Biden. The consequences for the American people are too serious,” said Sams.

The Irvine Police Department in California recently administered Narcan, an overdose-reversing drug, to a pit bull puppy in a bid to save it from a potential fentanyl overdose. The incident took place when the puppy was exposed to fentanyl in a car, leading to visible signs of overdose.

On Friday (September 8), the Irvine police department announced their intervention in a case that shook the community. The puppy's owners, identified as Caleb Aaron Gibson, 29, of San Juan Capistrano, and Katherine Marylou Menke, 27, of Santa Ana, were quickly arrested at a Walmart on charges of felony animal cruelty and possession of narcotics, reported the Associated Press.

The circumstances leading to the puppy's overdose remain somewhat unclear. It is believed that the exposure might have occurred within the confines of the vehicle.

The gravity of the situation was compounded by the fact that this was not the first time the puppy had experienced an overdose.

US imposes sanctions on Chinese, Mexican entities

The United States sanctioned 17 people and entities in China and Mexico in May this year, for facilitating the creation of counterfeit, fentanyl-laced pills, as the Biden administration works to reduce imports of the lethal substance.

The US Treasury Department, in a statement, said it slapped sanctions on seven entities and six people based in China, as well as one business and three people based in Mexico, as reported by Reuters.

It accused individuals of selling pill press machines and other equipment used to impress counterfeit trade markings onto illegally made tablets, which were frequently laced with fentanyl and bound for the United States.

According to research released earlier this month by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the rate of drug overdose deaths containing the synthetic opioid fentanyl more than quadrupled in the United States between 2016 and 2021.

Fentanyl is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine, and it is increasingly being combined with other illegal substances, frequently with disastrous effects.

One of the arrestees reportedly recognised the symptoms, stating, "Oh, I think my dog is overdosing." The Hawaii Volcano Observatory, a vigilant sentinel of volcanic activity, reported that this fresh eruption made its debut in the afternoon at Kilauea's summit, as reported by the Associated Press.

As molten rock surged forth, it was accompanied by the release of gases, and this combination, bore an ominous consequence: volcanic smog, or "vog," that would gradually envelop areas downwind from Kilauea, affecting the atmospheric quality.

Kyiv, on Sunday (September 10) blamed Russia for the death of two aid workers, one Canadian and the other Spanish, in eastern Ukraine. It was previously reported that Russian shelling hit a van which was carrying a team of four people working with a Ukrainian non-governmental organisation near the war-battered city of Bakhmut.

What do we know about the aid workers’ death?

Kyiv accused Moscow’s troops of killing Emma Igual, a Spanish citizen, and Anthony Ihnat, a Canadian citizen, both working for the NGO Road to Relief. They said two German citizens working for the aid group had also been injured after the Russian shelling in the eastern Donetsk region.

The organisation on its Instagram page said that the volunteers were helping evacuate the wounded from the front-line areas and were trapped inside the van as it flipped over and caught fire after being struck by shells near the two of Chasiv Yar.

The other two volunteers were identified as German medical volunteer Ruben Mawick and Swedish volunteer Johan Mathias Thyr, who were seriously wounded, according to the organisation.

Ukraine blames Russia for deaths of Spanish and Canadian foreign aid workers

The United States and Vietnam on Sunday (September 10) signed the deal to deepen relations and cooperation on strategic supply during a visit by US President Joe Biden to the Asian nation. Biden's visit to Vietnam has come amid increasing Chinese influence and assertiveness in the region.

Biden flew to Vietnam after attending G20 Summit in New Delhi. He met Nguyen Phu Trong, leader of Vietnam's ruling Communist Party and signed on a "comprehensive strategic partnership" which is Vietnam's highest level of diplomatic ties.

The US has in recent years, sought to take proactive steps in the Indo-Pacific, particularly in the South China Sea area. China has been attempting to enhance its influence in the region.

"This can be the beginning of even a greater era of cooperation," Biden said as he met Trong, Vietnam's paramount leader.

"Vietnam and the United States are critical partners at what I would argue is a very critical time."

The deal with Vietnam puts the US on par with China and other countries like Russia, India and South Korea, in the Vietnamese hierarchy of diplomatic relations.

"We're deepening our cooperation on critical emerging technologies, particularly around building a more resilient semiconductor supply chain," Biden said.

Trong thanked Biden for his contribution to improving US-Vietnamese ties. He said Vietnam would work hard to implement the new agreement with the US.

Rare earth minerals in the mix

Ahead of Biden's arrival, US Deputy National Security Adviser Joe Finer told reporters that talks between the US and Vietnam would also cover supplies of rare earth minerals which are used in the manufacture of high-tech devices like smartphones and electric car batteries.

Vietnam has world's second-largest deposits of rare earth minerals after China. US has said that Vietnam has a key role to play as it aims to source less from China.

Biden moved last month to restrict US investment in Chinese technology in sensitive areas including semiconductors, quantum computing and artificial intelligence.

India-Europe corridor not to hurt China: Biden

Biden addressed a press conference in Hanoi after the agreement between the US and Vietnam was signed. While talking about variety of topics, Biden stressed that the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) was not an attempt to China.

During the G20 Summit, India, US, the EU, Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Italy and UAE signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) over the IMEC.

The IMEC is widely perceived to be a counter to the China-led Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Biden said during the press conference that he met Chinese Premier Li Qiang during the G20 Summit. Chinese President Xi Jinping had skipped the summit and sent the premier instead.

"We talked about stability... it wasn't confrontational at all," Biden said.

He added that he hoped to meet Xi Jinping sooner or later.

"I don't want to contain China," he said. But also alleged that China was "beginning to change some of the rules of the game" in international relations.

Biden moved last month to restrict US investment in Chinese technology in sensitive areas including semiconductors, quantum computing and artificial intelligence. India-Europe corridor not to hurt China: Biden Biden addressed a press conference in Hanoi after the agreement between the US and Vietnam was signed. You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
