President Joe Biden had a near mishap as he descended the smaller staircase from Air Force One on Tuesday (Sept 26), shortly after it was revealed that he was engaging in balance exercises and opting for sneakers while also using the shorter set of stairs to prevent any potential falls, as reported by the Daily Mail.

When exiting Air Force One in Michigan to meet with striking auto workers, the president chose the lower stairs. As he neared the bottom, his heel slipped, but he managed to regain his balance before a fall.

Additionally, it appeared that he was wearing sturdy hiking or work boots rather than formal dress shoes, which provided better support for his feet.

Concerns about his age

This incident marked another close call for the 80-year-old president, who has experienced several stumbling incidents during his nearly three years in office. These include falls while boarding Air Force One, trips on various staircases, and a notable tumble at the Air Force Academy when he encountered a sandbag.

In light of public concerns about his age, as indicated by recent polls, Biden's team is taking extra precautions to minimise the risk of public stumbles. They believe that any potential ridicule he may face is worth avoiding a high-profile fall.

Notably, there was a viral moment in July when the president wore Skechers without socks before boarding Air Force One for a NATO summit in Europe.

However, alongside these lighter issues, there are legitimate questions about the president's health. Joe Biden is the oldest president in American history, and if he were to win a second term, he would be 86 years old at the end of it.

While the White House has stated that multiple factors influence the choice of staircase, they have not elaborated on the decision-making process. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre emphasised the administration's transparency regarding the president's health, pointing to his annual physical examinations. However, she did not provide details on the specific protocol used for Air Force One staircases.

On Monday, the United States of America formally established diplomatic relations with two Pacific Island nations, officially recognizing Niue and the Cook Islands. The acknowledgment comes at a time when President Joe Biden has made it a top priority since taking office to fortify ties in the Indo-Pacific area in opposition to China's growing sway. In an effort to strengthen ties with Pacific Island countries, the administration convened the leaders of the Pacific Island Forum on Monday at the White House.

In southeastern America, a parasitic worm that is typically found in rats is spreading. The worm can, in severe cases, cause coma or even death in humans, and can also infect pets.

Here's all you need to know:

Rat-borne danger

In a study published recently in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, researchers from Texas A&M, Zoo Atlanta and Mississippi State University have warned that the microscopic rat lungworm, scientifically known as Angiostrongylus Cantonensis, now threatens a wide area of southeast US.

As per US News, the parasite can trigger dangerous brain encephalitis in both humans and their pets.

Also read | Next ‘supercontinent’ formation could wipe out humans: Study

An analysis of tissue samples from 33 wild brown rats found dead on the grounds of a zoological facility in Atlanta from between 2019 and 2022, found that more than a fourth of the rodents appeared to have worm-like larvae in their tissues.

Four of these cases were confirmed as rat lungworm infections, the other three could to be confirmed but were likely Angiostrongylus cantonensis.

Infecting humans

Speaking to Newsweek, Nicole Gottdenker, a Professor of Pathology at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, warned that the worm can infect humans.

"When the infective stage of the worm is accidentally ingested by a human, it can go to the brain or spinal cord and cause tremendous inflammation, leading to symptoms like nausea, vomiting, neck stiffness, headaches, sometimes arm and leg tingling," said Gottdenker.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis life cycle (Image:CDC)

While the number of confirmed cases remains low, the study demonstrates that this worm is a potential threat to human health.

Angiostrongylus Cantonensis or the rat lungworm

The parasitic worm is typically found in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, including Hawaii.

In southeastern America, a parasitic worm that is typically found in rats is spreading. The worm can, in severe cases, cause coma or even death in humans, and can also infect pets. Here's all you need to know: Rat-borne danger In a study published recently in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, researchers from Texas A&M, Zoo Atlanta and Mississippi State University have warned that the microscopic rat lungworm, scientifically known as Angiostrongylus Cantonensis, now threatens a wide area of southeast US. As per US News, the parasite can trigger dangerous brain encephalitis in both humans and their pets. Four of these cases were confirmed as rat lungworm infections, the other three could to be confirmed but were likely Angiostrongylus cantonensis. Infecting humans Speaking to Newsweek, Nicole Gottdenker, a Professor of Pathology at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, warned that the worm can infect humans. "When the infective stage of the worm is accidentally ingested by a human, it can go to the brain or spinal cord and cause tremendous inflammation, leading to symptoms like nausea, vomiting, neck stiffness, headaches, sometimes arm and leg tingling," said Gottdenker. Angiostrongylus cantonensis life cycle (Image:CDC) While the number of confirmed cases remains low, the study demonstrates that this worm is a potential threat to human health. Angiostrongylus Cantonensis or the rat lungworm The parasitic worm is typically found in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, including Hawaii. However, recently it has been identified in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and most recently in Georgia. It is spread through rat faeces and can infect humans and other animals through produce or other food items. Also read | Explained | NASA sends Bennu asteroid samples to Earth.
An exceptionally rare $10,000 banknote, dating back to the Great Depression era, has been sold for an astonishing $480,000 at a recent auction.

This distinctive bill, originally issued in 1934, bears the likeness of Salmon P. Chase, the former US Treasury Secretary under President Abraham Lincoln. It garnered considerable attention due to its impeccable condition, certified by Paper Money Guarantee (PMG), an independent organisation specialising in the evaluation and authentication of paper currency.

This sale marked a historic moment in the world of numismatics, as it surpassed the previous record set in September 2020 when a 1934 $10,000 bill sold for $384,000, reported Business Insider.

Historical significance

The $10,000 bill is notable for being the highest denomination banknote ever used in public circulation within the United States.

It is important to distinguish it from the now-defunct $100,000 bill, which was exclusively employed for fund transfers between Federal Reserve banks, according to information from the Museum of American Finance website.

Historically, the US circulated high-denomination banknotes, including $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 notes. While these bills still retain legal tender status, the last printing of such high-denomination notes occurred in 1945. Official discontinuation followed in 1969 due to their limited usage.

Since then, the $100 bill has held the distinction of being the highest denomination banknote issued by the United States.

A majority of American voters ahead of the 2024 presidential elections have expressed concerns over the incumbent United States President Joe Biden’s age while in former President Donald Trump’s case, it’s the multiple civil and criminal trials he is facing, found a new national NBC News poll, on Sunday (September 24).

The poll also suggests that the Democrat incumbent president and Republican frontrunner might already be deadlocked in a hypothetical rematch over a year prior to the actual election.

Biden’s age concerns voters

The NBC News poll conducted between Sept 15 and 19 found a combined 74 per cent of registered voters have major concerns that Biden at the age of 80 does not have the necessary mental and physical health to be president for a second term.

“I know that he’s 80. I know that 80-year-olds are perfectly capable. I worry more about Biden’s physical health. He seems a little bit feeble and this job does take a toll,” Mary Lyon (53), a Democrat from Arizona told NBC News.

The incumbent president’s job disapproval rating is the highest since he took office, with a staggering 56 per cent disapproving of his administration and 41 per cent approving, reported NBC News.

The poll also found that only 37 per cent of registered voters approve of Biden’s handling of the economy while 59 per cent disapprove. At least 53 per cent of voters also disapprove of his foreign policy and 41 per cent approve.

Nearly six in 10 Democratic primary voters said that they want a Democratic candidate to challenge Biden for the party nomination in 2024.

What about Trump?

Trump, who is in the midst of several indictments and is the first sitting or former president to have his mugshot taken, is in the lead for the GOP presidential contest by more than 40 points.

The NBC News poll found that he is still the top pick among 59 per cent of national Republican primary voters while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis gets support from 16 per cent, followed by former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley at seven per cent.

The polls also show that Trump’s many legal woes have had little to no effect on his approval as the share of GOP primary voters who believe Trump should continue to be the Republican Party’s leader has increased from 49 per cent in June to 58 per cent now.

However, the NBC News poll also found that 62 per cent have either major concerns (52 per cent) or moderate concerns (10 per cent) about the former president facing multiple criminal and civil trials for alleged wrongdoing which includes his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Biden’s age concerns voters The NBC News poll conducted between Sept 15 and 19 found a combined 74 per cent of registered voters have major concerns that Biden at the age of 80 does not have the necessary mental and physical health to be president for a second term. Biden vs Trump Notably, Biden’s net favourability rating (39 per cent positive and 49 per cent negative) is higher than Trump’s (35 per cent positive and 54 per cent negative), according to the NBC News poll. This is a policy u-turn after industry and the U.S. Government complained about the move, which could hit Apple, Samsung, and others. An official told Reuters that the plan will be delayed by a year, after which the government will consider whether to implement a licensing regime or not.

The 120,000 ethnic Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh will leave for Armenia as they do not want to be a part of Azerbaijan and live in the constant fear of ethnic cleansing, the leader of the breakaway region told Reuters, on Sunday (September 24). Similarly, the Armenian prime minister also said that the possibility of Karabakh Armenians leaving the region is high and that Yerevan was ready to take them.

This comes after Azerbaijan, on Tuesday (Sept 19) launched a military operation against the separatist Armenians, who have claimed part of Karabakh – which is internationally recognised as Azerbaijani territory – as their ancestral homeland.

While Baku has said that it will guarantee their rights if they choose to stay back and integrate the region, Armenians say they fear repression.

Mass exodus in Nagorno-Karabakh?

“Our people do not want to live as part of Azerbaijan. Ninety-nine point nine percent prefer to leave our historic lands,” David Babayan, an adviser to Samvel Shahramanyan, the president of the self-styled Republic of Artsakh, told Reuters.

He added, “The fate of our poor people will go down in history as a disgrace and a shame for the Armenian people and for the whole civilised world.”

The military operation which reportedly led to the deaths of over 200 people and wounded 400 others, ended after the Armenians of Karabakh were forced to declare a ceasefire following a lightning 24-hour attack by the much larger Azerbaijani military.

Meanwhile, AFP reported that furious relatives of ethnic Armenians trapped in the breakaway region gathered at the Azerbaijan border to await a medical evacuation.

The Armenian health ministry said 23 ambulances carrying a first batch of “seriously and very seriously wounded citizens,” were on their way to the border, accompanied by medics and Red Cross workers.

The leader of the breakaway region said it was not immediately clear when the population would move down the Lachin corridor which links the territory to Armenia.

The ethnic Armenian authorities also said that Russian peacekeepers will escort the homeless families of Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia if they wish.

“We inform you that families who have become homeless as a result of recent military operations and who have expressed desire to leave the republic will be carried out by Russian peacekeepers,” said the authorities on Facebook.

It added, “The government will soon provide information about the transfer of other population groups.”

If a mass exodus were to take place, it could change the delicate balance of power in the South Caucasus region where countries like Russia, the United States, Turkey and Iran are jostling for influence. Notably, the region is home to several oil and gas pipelines and home to people of multiple ethnicities.

‘Danger of ethnic cleansing’

As the Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan continues to face calls for resignation, he said that Yerevan is ready to accept all ethnic Armenian compatriots from Nagorno-Karabakh. “The Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh still face the danger of ethnic cleansing,” said Pashinyan, during a national address, as per TASS.

He added, “If real living conditions are not created for the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh in their homes and effective mechanisms of protection against ethnic cleansing, then the likelihood is increasing that the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh will see expulsion from their homeland as the only way out.”

“Our government will lovingly welcome our brothers and sisters from Nagorno-Karabakh,” said Pashinyan. However, it was not immediately clear where the 120,000 people could be housed in Armenia which is home to some 2.8 million people.

Shift in alliance?

The Armenian PM also took a swipe at the long-standing ally Russia after previously criticising Moscow – the traditional power broker in the region – for being too distracted by its own war in Ukraine.

Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) and Moscow-Yerevan military-political cooperation were “insufficient” security guarantees, said the Armenian PM.

This comes after Moscow refused to come to Armenia’s assistance in the latest Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and reportedly argued that Yerevan itself recognised the disputed region as part of Baku.

Pashinyan, earlier this week, also said that unidentified forces were planning a coup against him amid widespread protests in Yerevan which have led to the arrest of nearly 100 people. Additionally, he has also accused Russian media of fighting an information war against him.

Moscow, which has around 2,000 peacekeepers in the region as well as a military base in Armenia, regards itself as the prime security guarantor. But that might change soon, as Armenia recently hosted a joint army exercise with the United States.

Washington has criticised Azerbaijan’s military operation and expressed “deep concern” for ethnic Armenians there and even sent a US congressional delegation to meet with leaders in Armenia to express support.

What about Azerbaijan?

During his speech at the United Nations General Assembly Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov promised that Baku would ensure equal treatment for ethnic Armenians from the disputed region.

“I wish to reiterate that Azerbaijan is determined to reintegrate ethnic Armenian residents of the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan as equal citizens,” said Bayramov. It is also worth noting that last week’s Azerbaijani victory may have brought a decisive end to the decades-long conflict.

Turkey – a member of the US-led military alliance NATO – has previously expressed support for Baku’s operation to preserve its territorial integrity.

Days, after Washington said it sent delegates to Armenia, the Turkish presidency, on Sunday (Sept 24), reported that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet his counterpart Ilham Aliyev in the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan on Monday.

This comes as the two allies have sought to step up efforts to open a land corridor linking Turkey to Azerbaijan’s main territory via Nakhchivan.
