United States Senator Dianne Feinstein known for being a trailblazer for women in American politics and spending more than three decades in the Senate passed away at the age of 90, her office confirmed on Friday (Sep 29) after multiple American media reports.

She was also the oldest member of the US Senate where she served since 1992 and held her seat in the chamber longer than any other woman or senator from the state of California.

Feinstein, a Democrat, has been an advocate for gun control in the US and spearheaded the first federal assault weapons ban and documented the CIA’s torture of foreign terrorism suspects.

She had shattered multiple glass ceilings during her nearly 31 years in office, including being the first woman to head the influential Senate Intelligence Committee. Feinstein cast her last vote in the Senate late Thursday (Sep 28) morning, reported the American media citing Senate records.

‘Never backed away’

According to a statement by her office, Feinstein passed away at her home in Washington, DC. “Senator Feinstein never backed away from a fight for what was just and right,” said her chief of staff James Sauls.

It added, “There are few women who can be called senator, chairman, mayor, wife, mom and grandmother. Senator Feinstein was a force of nature who made an incredible impact on our country and her home state.”

“She left a legacy that is undeniable and extraordinary.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom is now expected to appoint a temporary replacement for Feinstein.

Declining health

Amid her reported declining health and cognitive abilities many called for her retirement as well as highlighted concerns about America’s aging politicians. She had been facing questions for months about her abilities and also got into a conflict with her fellow Democrats over her refusal to step down.

In February, she announced that she would not be seeking reelection in 2024. Feinstein was also sidelined from Congress for three months after suffering from shingles and complications, including encephalitis and Ramsay Hunt Syndrome.

In April, she was admitted to the hospital after a “minor fall” at her home and took on lighter duties upon her return and moved around the Capitol using a wheelchair.

About Dianne Feinstein

Born on 22 June 1933, Feinstein grew up in San Francisco and is a graduate of Stanford University. She was elected in 1969 to the San Francisco County Board of Supervisors and became the city’s first female mayor in 1978 after then-Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were assassinated by Dan White, a former member of the same board.

Speaking about her experience of that day Feinstein said that she rushed to Milk’s office after hearing gunshots and while searching for his pulse, her finger found a bullet hole.

The horror of that experience never left her and she went on to author and introduce, the federal ban on military-style assault weapons in 1994 both a landmark bill and one of her biggest legislative achievements, which expired in 2004.

As the Intelligence Committee chair, Feinstein led a years-long review of the CIA’s controversial interrogation programme of foreign terrorists following the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

“The CIA’s actions are a stain on our values and our history,” she had said at the time.

The report also concluded, despite the CIA’s claims their use of “coercive interrogation techniques in some cases amounting to torture” on at least 119 detainees, played no no role in disrupting any terrorism plots.

The Seattle Police Officer, who was under fire for laughing and making insensitive comments over the death of an Indian-origin student Jaahnavi Kandula, has been taken off patrol duty, said the police.

In a statement on Thursday (Sept 28), the Seattle Police Department said that traffic officer Daniel Auderer “has been administratively reassigned to a non-operational position," reported The Seattle Times.

Auderer, who was a member of the SPD’s traffic squad and vice president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, has been under probe after a recording from his body camera was released that showed him laughing and joking during a phone call with union president Mike Solan.

The phone call happened after another officer, Kevin Dave, in his police SUV hit and killed 23-year-old Kandula as she was crossing a street on Jan 23.

Dave was driving at a speed of nearly 120 kmph and his vehicle threw Kandula more than 100 feet away after the deadly collision. She was rushed to Harbourview Medical Centre but later succumbed to her critical injuries.

As per The Seattle Times, Auderer was assigned to determine whether Officer Dave was under the influence.

Auderer conducted a routine analysis of whether Dave was under the influence and then called Mike Solan, the president of the police union. The video reportedly shows Auderer's side of the conversation and he can be heard laughing at the accident that caused Kandula's death.

He underplayed the crash, wrongly saying Dave was driving 50 mph at the time.

In the video, which went viral on social media, Seattle Police Officers' Guild Vice President Daniel Auderer can be heard saying, "She is dead" before bursting out into laughter and referring to Kandula as "a regular person".

Towards the end, the officer says, "She was 26 anyway, she had limited value", getting her age wrong.

Earlier this month, the Seattle Police Officers' Guild defended the official saying that some of the videos of police that were shared, did not fairly elucidate the context of the story and that the recorded conversation was taken out of context.

"The video captures only one side of the conversation. There is much more detail and nuance that has not been made public yet," the Seattle Police Officers Guild said in a statement.

It also released a letter written by its officer Auderer in which the latter said that he intended the comment as a mockery of lawyers.

The United States released a report on Thursday (Sep 28) that underlines China's alleged attempt to reshape the global information environment in order to alter the will of many nations to Beijing's advantage.

The latest assessment from the US officials published in a report by the State Department's Global Engagement Center accused Beijing of employing a variety of strategies in an effort to establish a world in which Beijing controls the flow of essential information - officially or indirectly.

The report titled - Global Engagement Center Special Report: How the People’s Republic of China Seeks to Reshape the Global Information Environment - said: "Beijing's information manipulation spans the use of propaganda, disinformation, and censorship."

The report further said, "Unchecked, the PRC's efforts will reshape the global information landscape, creating biases and gaps that could even lead nations to make decisions that subordinate their economic and security interests to Beijing's."

Well, this is not the first time the US has levelled such accusations related to manipulating the information environment.

During the early days of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the West accused China of spreading disinformation on social media platforms about the origins of the virus, which still is a mystery.

Not just Covid, the West claims that Beijing also often comes up with campaigns to push agendas over issues such as Xinjiang, the South China Sea, and Taiwan.

The report said that Beijing seeks to maximise the reach of "biased or false pro-PRC content". According to the report, China has apparently acquired stakes in foreign media through public and non-public means and sponsored online influencers.

"Beijing has also secured sometimes restrictive content sharing agreements with local outlets that can result in trusted mastheads providing legitimacy to unlabeled or obscured PRC content," the report noted.

Weighing in on the future impact, the report that China's global information manipulation is not simply a matter of public diplomacy, but a challenge to the integrity of the global information space.

The report said that unchecked Beijing's efforts could result in a future in which "technology exported by China, coopted local governments, and fear of Beijing's direct retaliation produce a sharp contraction of global freedom of expression".
