We are running...and running...catching elusive dreams. Career, money, people and more. The conventional wisdom (or so we think) tells us to give it all, day and night, for smallest of slivers of that feeling of mission accomplished. Workaholic icons encourage us to forget all and pursue our goals relentlessly.

And then we come across a top diplomat of world's most powerful nation with god knows how many problems on his plate simply taking it easy and singing a song in front of an audience. The man, usually eloquently issuing dry political statements on behalf of his country is strumming guitar and crooning, wowing the audience.

Just leave everything and watch this video of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken playing guitar and singing a song.

The video, which he himself posted on X (formerly Twitter) has come as a majorly huge surprise for people across the world and even in America who didn't expect a politicalese-speaking man let his hair down and croon a Blues song.

The tune is famous, even among those who don't listen to Blues, a genre of music defined by its ruggedness and funk that may have found its roots in the lives (and hardships) of African-Americans in the US. Even if you are not a big music fan, the guitar part which Blinken plays at the very beginning is so famous that it has found its way in movies, advertisement jingles, parodies, comedies and much much more.

In case you are wondering name of the song Blinken is singing, its "Hoochie Coochie Man” by blues legend Muddy Waters.

The song is legendary in itself. But you continue to marvel at Blinken's skills long after the video he posted is over.

But why are we so surprised when we come across a hard-faced diplomat singing a song? Just what is it that makes us keep life and art in two decidedly distinct compartments?

That's the thing maybe? The root of some of our problems? Sometimes we keep life and art apart so much that we fail to realise that confluence of these two may exactly be what fuels high performers we see on the world stage. It's maybe ok to stop once in a while during the mad race of life and indulge in whatever that sets your heart and mind afire.

US Army Private Travis King has returned to a US military facility in Texas following his expulsion from North Korea, reported CNN. After his daring crossing of the heavily fortified border two months ago, King arrived at Kelly Field on a US military flight on Thursday (Sept 28).

Television broadcasts show a group of people deboarding an aircraft at the base. It is anticipated that King will undergo a medical evaluation at the Brooke Army Medical Center, located within Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. Notably, this medical centre was the facility where basketball star Brittney Griner received treatment in December following her release from Russian detention, a development that followed a prisoner exchange with Russia and ended her ten-month incarceration.

The US government has announced that upon his return, King will undergo an initial assessment followed by a reintegration process aimed at reuniting him with his family.

At the age of 23, King made a dash into North Korea from South Korea on July 18 this year while participating in a civilian tour near the heavily fortified border, leading to his immediate arrest by North Korean authorities.

It remains unclear whether King will face disciplinary action from the US Army, which has handled his case with caution. Thus far, the Army has refrained from labelling him as a deserter, despite his unauthorised border crossing while on active duty.

North Korea, on the other hand, appears to have treated King's case as one of illegal immigration. North Korea's KCNA state news agency reported that King had informed Pyongyang that he entered North Korea illegally due to disillusionment with the unequal aspects of US society.

The Swedish government, acting as the representative of US interests in North Korea, facilitated King's return from North Korea and transported him to China.

The US State Department confirmed that the US Ambassador to Beijing, Nicholas Burns, met with King in Dandong, a city bordering North Korea. From there, King travelled to Shenyang, China, and then to Osan Air Force Base in South Korea before making his journey back to the United States.

King enlisted in the US Army in January 2021 and faced two allegations of assault during his time in South Korea. Court documents indicate that he pleaded guilty to one instance of assault and damaging public property, related to an incident involving the destruction of a police car during a profanity-laden confrontation with Koreans. Further disciplinary actions awaited him upon his return to the United States.

Austan Goolsbee, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, has expressed optimism about the possibility of the United States avoiding a recession, even as the central bank continues to raise interest rates in an effort to combat inflation.

In a recent interview with CNBC, Goolsbee referred to this optimistic scenario as the "golden path," although he acknowledged that it comes with its share of risks and uncertainties.

"I've been calling that the golden path, and I think it's possible, but there are a lot of risks and the path is long and winding," Bloomberg quoted Goolsbee as saying, emphasising the complexities of the current economic landscape.

Goolsbee drew attention to the unemployment rate, which was at 3.8 per cent last month and remained remarkably close to its level from the previous year when inflation was significantly higher than it is presently. This comparison underscores the Federal Reserve's challenge of achieving both full employment and price stability.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the Federal Reserve officials recently decided to maintain their benchmark lending rate at a 22-year high, with the expectation of one more rate hike for the present fiscal year. Additionally, policymakers signalled a more positive outlook for a "soft landing" for the U.S. economy but acknowledged that interest rates are likely to remain elevated for an extended period.

The report cited Chair Jerome Powell reassured that policymakers would approach the end of the rate-hiking cycle with caution while maintaining their commitment to bringing inflation back to the 2 per cent target. In July, the preferred inflation gauge for Fed officials saw a 0.2 per cent increase for the second consecutive month, marking the smallest consecutive gains since late 2020.

Goolsbee, who had previously noted progress in monthly core inflation data, reiterated that the time is rapidly approaching for discussions to shift from how high to raise rates to how long they should be held at elevated levels. The Federal Reserve will be closely monitoring fresh inflation data for August, set to be released on Friday, to inform their ongoing policy decisions.

Consulting company McKinsey & Co has reached a settlement worth $230 million to resolve a multitude of lawsuits brought forth by several U.S. local governments and school districts that alleged that McKinsey played a pivotal role in fuelling the opioid addiction crisis through its work with the bankrupt Purdue Pharma that manufactured OxyContin and other pharmaceutical companies.

The settlements, which are pending judicial approval, were unveiled in documents sent on Tuesday in federal court in San Francisco. This substantial sum is in addition to the $641.5 million that McKinsey had already paid to resolve claims lodged by state attorneys-general.

Under the terms of the settlements, McKinsey will disburse $207 million to resolve claims made by counties and municipalities, with an additional $23 million earmarked to address claims lodged by public school districts. While McKinsey had previously acknowledged its intent to resolve these cases, the exact financial terms had not been disclosed until now.

Reuters cited Aelish Baig, an attorney representing the local governments, lauded the agreement, describing it as "a strong outcome for the communities harmed by this crisis."

It is important to note that McKinsey has not admitted any misconduct in this matter. In a statement, the consulting firm maintained that it believes its past work was conducted within the bounds of the law. Furthermore, McKinsey pointed out that in 2019, it had committed to refraining from advising clients on any opioid-related business.

The opioid epidemic has resulted in a deluge of lawsuits filed by states, local governments, and Native American tribes. These legal actions have accused pharmaceutical companies of downplaying the risks associated with opioid painkillers. Distributors and pharmacies have also faced allegations of turning a blind eye to red flags indicating the illegal trafficking of these drugs.

The cumulative impact of this litigation has been substantial, with settlements exceeding a staggering $51 billion, according to legal representatives for the plaintiffs. Agreements have already been reached with major drug manufacturers and the nation's largest distributors.

The lawsuits targeting McKinsey, contended that the company contributed to the deadly drug crisis by assisting drug manufacturers, including Purdue Pharma, in devising deceptive marketing strategies and increasing the sales of opioid painkillers.

The opioid crisis has had devastating consequences, with about 645,000 individuals succumbing to overdoses involving opioids, spanning both prescription and illicit drugs, from 1999 to 2021, as reported by the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

In a related development, the U.S. Supreme Court recently agreed to consider a challenge mounted by President Joe Biden's administration against Purdue Pharma's multi-billion-dollar bankruptcy settlement, which seeks to resolve associated claims against the pharmaceutical manufacturer.

A senior European official, briefing reporters on the condition of anonymity, said on Wednesday (September 27) that US President Joe Biden is preparing to host European Union chiefs Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen in Washington on October 20.

AFP reported citing the official that there has been "good discussion" over the summit and that the EU side was "hopeful" of a breakthrough over many issues.

Last EU-US summit took place in Brussels in June 2021. In March last year, Biden was a guest of the 27 EU member state leaders during European Council meeting.

The goal of the upcoming summit is to reinforce the trans-Atlantic partnership to better fight crises like climate change and at the same time, balancing the world economy.

The US and the EU are on the same page on range of issues. It is expected that a strong message of unity will be sent especially in the face of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

However, differences remain between the two sides over issues like tariffs imposed by Trump administration on steel and aluminium from Europe.

The tariffs have been suspended. But they mau come back into force by next month-end if the US and the EU do not agree over a lasting solution over this issue.

Europe has also expressed concerns over Biden's $370 billion Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), fearing its subsidies for clean energy tech will lead to all US firms out-competing their European rivals.

US-EU summit to take place in Washington on October 20, says EU official

As the clock ticks down to a looming government shutdown, the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives find themselves on duelling paths regarding funding measures, raising concerns about the stability of government operations.

In a move towards averting a shutdown, the Senate voted 77-19 to initiate debates on a bipartisan bill aimed at funding the government through November 17. This bill includes allocations of approximately $6 billion for domestic disaster responses and an additional roughly $6 billion in aid for Ukraine.

Contrastingly, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives is advancing its own partisan approach that leans heavily on conservative priorities. However, this approach, according to reports, faces significant hurdles in the Democratic-majority Senate and is unlikely to become law. Even if enacted, these measures would fund only a portion of the government, insufficient to prevent a shutdown.

This divide between the two chambers raises the spectre of the federal government experiencing its fourth shutdown in a decade come Sunday. The electoral deadlock tendencies have started to impact Wall Street's assessment of the credibility of the US government.

A cooperative short-term extension of federal funding at existing levels was passed with the help of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell in an effort to maintain the continuity of the government.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is pursuing a path that would temporarily fund the government but comes with stringent border and immigration restrictions that are unlikely to garner enough Democratic support in both chambers to become law.

In an effort to prevent a shutdown, President Joe Biden and McCarthy had previously reached an agreement in May, which outlined discretionary spending of $1.59 trillion for the fiscal year commencing on October 1.

According to Reuters, the White House now urged Republicans to honour this deal, with Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stating, "House Republicans should join the Senate in doing their job, stop playing political games with peoples' lives, and abide by the bipartisan deal two-thirds of them voted for in May."

However, Republicans have rejected this deal, demanding an additional $120 billion in cuts. As the clock ticks down to a looming government shutdown, the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives find themselves on duelling paths regarding funding measures, raising concerns about the stability of government operations.

According to Reuters, the White House now urged Republicans to honour this deal, with Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stating, "House Republicans should join the Senate in doing their job, stop playing political games with peoples' lives, and abide by the bipartisan deal two-thirds of them voted for in May." However, Republicans have rejected this deal, demanding an additional $120 billion in cuts. McCarthy's proposed legislation not only seeks to restart the construction of the U.S.-Mexico border wall, a hallmark policy of former President Donald Trump, but also aims to control immigration policies, a move criticised for potentially limiting U.S. asylum for immigrants. What does the shutdown mean? The US ambassador to Kosovo said on Tuesday (September 26) that the US is working with Kosovo in the investigation of a shootout which resulted in the death of four people last weekend. He was speaking after the deadliest violence to hit the contested region in years.

According to Kosovo authorities, around 30 heavily armed Serbs stormed the village of Banjska on Sunday. They battled police and barricaded themselves in Serbian Orthodox monastery. The monastery was captured by police later on Sunday. Three attackers and one police officer were killed.

"We are still doing our hard work to figure out exactly how and who is responsible and why," Ambassador Jeffrey M. Hovenier said after meeting Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani.

There is fresh international concern after recent violence about stability in Kosovo.

Kosovo has an ethnic Albanian majority. It declared independence from Serbia in 2008.

Serbia has never recognised Kosovo's independence. The ethnic Serb minority in north Kosovo largely rejects Kosovan rule.

"This was not a group of individual citizens spontaneously coming together to express concern," Hovenier said, talking about equipment and weapons seized by the police.

"This was a trained, organised group. And that means that there are some structures behind them giving them the training and equipment."

Responsibility for the attack has not been claimed by any group so far.

Kosovo police said on Tuesday that two more suspects were arrested in a hotel in the north of the country. The police said that a cache of weapons had also been seized. This included assault rifles and heavy machine guns.

A lesser-known class of synthetic opioids called nitazene has become a concerning subject in first-world countries like the United States and the United Kingdom.

A lesser-known class of synthetic opioids called nitazene has become a concerning subject in first-world countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. Nitazene consists of some drugs that are a hundred times more potent than morphine and as potent as fentanyl, a synthetic opioid infamous for the lives it has claimed in the US. Over the last two months, there was a rise in opioid-related deaths in the UK, including several cases of nitazene intake. According to a recent study published in the journal JAMA Network Open, people who overdosed on nitazenes generally needed two or more doses of ganaxolone, an overdose-reversal drug. However, those who overdosed on fentanyl required only one. In the 1950s, a Swiss company called Ciba Pharmaceuticals developed nitazene as a new painkiller (analgesic). But the opioid drug, banned under the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016 in the UK, never made it to the market. How do opioids work? Opioids, like morphine, heroin, and fentanyl, act on mu(μ)-opioid receptors, sites in the brain and other body parts that respond to the drug. When activated, these brain receptors can relieve pain. However, at high doses, they can evoke euphoria followed by drowsiness. Opioids also reduce breathing by suppressing the respiratory system. Thus, an overdose of opioids can cause death. ALSO READ | Over 250 mysterious fairy circles spotted from space spread across three continents N-desethyl isotonitazene causes apnea, the stoppage of breathing, at about a third of the dose of fentanyl. Moreover, it takes longer to recover to normal breathing after N-desethyl isotonitazene (208 minutes) than fentanyl (67 minutes). Other issues with nitazene include its usage as an adulterant in other illegal drugs, like cocaine, benzodiazepines, and synthetic cannabinoids (spice). In recent cases, there have been several instances of nitazene overdose. The number of new drugs in this class, analogues, emerging on the streets appears to be growing. However, since enough facilities are unavailable to test for nitazenes, the extent of the opioid drug's penetration into the illegal market is unknown. Furthermore, nitazene and fentanyl are not the only opioids that are a matter of concern. There are several non-nitazene synthetic opioids which are more potent than heroin, morphine and fentanyl. Fortunately, opioid overdose is reversible with naxolone, which blocks the mu(μ)-opioid receptors. It can save lives if given within the correct duration. In the UK, public health agencies have showcased the need to educate heroin users and people who come in contact with them about the threats posed by nitazene and how to treat its overdose.
