This week, China appealed a decision by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to reject the country's tariffs on US goods worth $2.4 billion, claiming that the judgement was wrong, Bloomberg reported.

According to the report, a statement was released on Tuesday that acknowledged the appeal, the Ministry of Commerce stated that “China believes that the expert panel's decision in this case contains legal errors.” The country is contesting the WTO panel's decision "to protect its rights and interests.”

When China implemented the tariffs in retaliation for the steel and aluminium tariffs imposed by the previous administration of President Donald Trump, the WTO concluded last month that China had broken its fundamental trade commitments.

The panel agreed with the Washington’s assertions that Beijing had broken previous trade agreements it made when it joined the WTO and that Beijing's tariffs prevented it from receiving the treatment of a so-called most-favorable nation.

China's tariffs, according to the commerce ministry's announcement on Tuesday, were enacted in retaliation for “unilateral and protectionist” actions taken by the US. The conflict began during the early stages of Trump's trade war, when his government levied 10% per cent tariffs on imports of aluminium and 25 per cent tariffs on steel from around the world.

Because the WTO administrative body has been inactive since 2019, a Beijing appeal serves as a veto.

Canada worked 'very closely' with the United States on intelligence that Indian agents had been potentially involved in the murder of a Sikh man in British Columbia earlier this year, a senior Canadian government source said on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that domestic intelligence agencies were actively pursuing credible allegations tying New Delhi's agents to the shooting of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, 45, in British Columbia in June.

If “serious progress” is not made towards a resolution, the United Auto Workers (UAW)have warned to extend their historic strike against Detroit's Big Three automakers on Friday, according to a report by The Washington Post.

UAW President Shawn Fain gave General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis until noon on Friday, which will mark one week since the union started striking at three factories, one at each company, in a video uploaded late Monday. The industry is transitioning to electric vehicles, which could result in additional plant closures. The union is asking for a significant pay rise, improved benefits, and more employment protections.

“We’re going to keep hitting the company where we need to, when we need to,” The Washington Post quoted Fain as saying. “And we’re not going to keep waiting around forever while they drag this out.”

The strike's participating factories were not disclosed by Fain. He also refrained from announcing that provisional agreements would be required to prevent further strikes and did not define what would constitute “serious progress.” The current strikes affect the Wentzville, Missouri, GM van and truck facility, the Toledo Stellantis plant that manufactures the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator, and the Wayne, Michigan, Ford plant that produces the Ranger pickup and Bronco SUV.

Separately, Ford and the employees' union, Unifor, avoided a strike on Tuesday by coming to a tentative contract agreement. The union said the agreement made "fundamental, transformative gains that addressed our core priorities of pensions, wages, and the EV transition." Late on Tuesday, the union and Ford announced that they had achieved an agreement.

Both parties declined to provide details, stating that the workers must yet ratify the arrangement. The agreement was reached just after 5,600 Ford employees and Unifor announced they were prepared to strike. An engine manufacturing facility in Windsor, Ontario, which produces engines for the business's extremely lucrative F-series trucks, was one of the workplaces threatening a work stoppage.

When Unifor announced the tentative agreement, it claimed that it had “used the most potent tool at our union's disposal: the right to strike.”

Although Unifor is also in negotiations with GM and Stellantis, it has decided to put its current agreements with those businesses on hold in order to concentrate on discussions with Ford.

The UAW and the automakers in the United States are still at odds over the provisions of a new, four-year contract. The automakers are only willing to provide roughly 20 per cent of the 36 per cent wage raise the union is asking for over a four-year period.

The current system of tiered pay for employees is nevertheless a source of contention because younger workers receive lower pay and perks or spend years in a temporary employment status. The businesses have offered to reduce the time it takes for employees to reach the top salary rate and have suggested raising the starting pay for temporary employees by 20 per cent, to $20 per hour. They did not, however, give in to all of the union's demands.

Following Fain's comments late Monday, Ford stated that it has conceded a lot in the negotiations and is still committed to reaching an agreement. Ford is providing certain compensation adjustments for the cost of living, additional contributions to employees' retirement savings, and more paid time off in addition to 20 per cent wage increases spread over four years

'Naked aggression': In UN speech, Biden hits hard at Russia for prolonged war in Ukraine

A recent study funded by the United States government suggests that women exposed to several widely used chemicals appear to face a higher chance of ovarian and other types of cancers.

The research conducted by a team of academic researchers using the data collected by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found a link between women diagnosed with certain cancers and exposed to toxic PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals”.

About the study

According to the study published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology, some women who suffered from “hormonally driven” cancers were exposed to certain PFAS.

“These PFAS chemicals appear to disrupt hormone function in women, which is one potential mechanism that increases odds of hormone-related cancers in women,” said Amber Cathey, a research faculty scientist at the University of Michigan and lead author of the study.

Whereas the researchers did not find similar associations between the chemical and cancer diagnoses in men.

The study is based on the data collected through a CDC biomonitoring programme between 2005 to 2018 and included more than 10,000 people.

The scientists then looked at the previous cancer diagnoses as well as the level of PFAS and phenols in blood and urine collected from the participants.

PFAS are used in thousands of household and industrial products including stain- and water-resistant fabrics, cleaning products, paints, and fire-fighting foams and are dubbed “forever chemicals” since they are present in the environment for a long time.

Additionally, given how widely these chemicals are used it is nearly impossible to avoid exposure to them. According to a previous report by the CDC, PFAS are found in the blood of 97 per cent of Americans.

“People should care about this because we know that there is widespread human exposure to these chemicals and we have documented data on that,” said Max Aung, assistant professor of environmental health at the USC Keck School of Medicine and senior author of the study, in a statement.

What else did they find?

The study also found links between women diagnosed with cancer and high exposures to phenols – an organic compound present in many household products, including mouthwash and food packaging.

The researchers also found that higher exposure to PFDE – a long-chained PFAS compound – particularly for women, had double the odds of a previous melanoma diagnosis.

Scientists also found racial differences as white women had greater chances of previous cancer diagnosis with higher PFAS exposure linked with ovarian and uterine cancers.

Meanwhile, non-white women were more likely to have previous cancer diagnosis with increased exposure to phenols and parabens which was linked with breast cancer.

The researchers also noted that while it does not prove that exposure to so-called “forever chemicals” led to these cancer diagnoses, it is a strong signal that they may be playing a role and should be studied further.

US President Joe Biden often finds himself facing comments hurled at him over his age from Republicans. This time, Biden takes 'age' bull by its horns. Here's what he said

United States House Republicans plan to hold the first hearing in the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden next week, said a spokesperson for the GOP-led panel, on Tuesday (September 19).

This comes a week after House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he is directing a House committee to open an impeachment inquiry into the Democratic president over his family’s business dealings.

When will the hearing take place?

The hearing which will reportedly take place on September 28, is set to “focus on constitutional and legal questions surrounding the President’s involvement in corruption and abuse of public office,” said a spokesperson for the House Oversight Committee, as quoted by the New York Post.

“The Oversight Committee will continue to follow the evidence and money trail to provide the transparency and accountability that Americans demand from their government,” the statement added.

Oversight Chair James Comer, ahead of the hearing, said that he plans to subpoena the bank records of the US president's son Hunter Biden and his brother James Biden. “We’ll be issuing the details hopefully by the end of the day or first thing in the morning,” said Comer.

What is the impeachment inquiry about?

McCarthy said last Tuesday (Sep 12) that the House Oversight Committee’s investigation so far has found a “culture of corruption” around the Biden family, in reference to the probe sought by Republicans into dealings of the incumbent president’s son, Hunter.

He also alleged that the Democratic president had lied to the American people about his son’s foreign business dealings when he was serving as the vice president under Barack Obama. The issue has also been a constant target for the GOP.

Republicans, who now narrowly control the House, have repeatedly accused Biden of profiting from his son’s foreign business ventures while he served as vice president, but have not reportedly provided any substantial evidence for their claim.

When asked if the hearing would reveal new evidence, Comer, a Republican from the US state of Kentucky said, “I think that some of you need to have a refresher course on the existing evidence, so we’ll probably rehash some of that if for no other purpose (than) to help educate the Washington, D.C., press corps,” in an apparent jibe at the media, as quoted by The Hill.

The inquiry also comes ahead of the 2024 presidential elections. Notably, the House, then controlled by Democrats, impeached former US president and now Republican frontrunner Donald Trump in 2019 and 2021.

While he was acquitted both times after the impeachment resolution failed to gain a majority in the Senate, it was also previously reported that some hardline Republicans had threatened to remove McCarthy as the speaker of the House if he did not back impeachment efforts against Biden.
