Ukraine claims it regained control of oil platform in Black Sea

<p>Kyiv, on Sunday (September 10) blamed Russia for the death of two aid workers, one Canadian and the other Spanish, in eastern Ukraine. It was previously reported that Russian shelling hit a van which was carrying a team of four people working with a Ukrainian non-governmental organisation near the war-battered city of Bakhmut.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Russian Minister Sergei Lavrov, on Sunday (September 10), speaking about the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration adopted in the second session of Day One of the G20 Summit, said that Moscow did not expect the document to be adopted and was ready to defend itself and the wording about the Ukraine war. ‘We didn’t expect that…’: Russia’s Lavrov about G20 Leaders’ declaration

<p>While the G20 Summit's Delhi Declaration addressed a range of global challenges, the omission of Russia by name while referring to the war in Ukraine remained conspicuous. The G20 Summit's outcome left Ukraine searching for stronger condemnation and a more unified response against Russia.</p>

<p>Shairee Malhotra, the Think20 Taskforce Coordinator for India's G20 presidency, offered insights into the situation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Malhotra said, "It is understandable that Ukraine would feel this way."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Ukraine would have expected and wanted to see concrete and firm references calling out Russian aggression, which the declaration avoids even though it does call on states to uphold the principles of international law including territorial integrity and sovereignty."</p>

<p>After the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration was adopted with the consensus of G20 member nations, Ukrainian foreign affairs ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko wrote on X, formerly Twitter, "G20 adopted a final declaration. We are grateful to the partners who tried to include strong wording in the text. However, in terms of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, G20 has nothing to be proud of."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Asked whether the absence of outright mention of Russia indicated dwindling support for Ukraine, Malhotra stated, "No, the absence of any mention of Russia in the Delhi Declaration does not signify dwindling military or political Western support for Ukraine."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Malhotra explained that the declaration was a result of "India’s skilled drafters and negotiators who managed to gain consensus on the ‘impossible’ document."&nbsp;</p>

<p>She said the declaration was also a testament to India's close bilateral ties with the United States, European Union and other Western states.</p>

<p>Despite their support for Ukraine, she added, US and European G20 members "would not have wanted India’s G20 presidency to conclude without a successful joint statement."&nbsp;</p>

G20: Ukraine’s hopes of Russia’s stronger condemnation dashed. Is West support for it waning?

<p>Kyiv military officials reported that Ukraine was targeted by a total of 32 Russian drones, with 25 of them successfully intercepted and neutralised.</p>

<p>"The occupiers&nbsp;attacked&nbsp;Ukraine&nbsp;with&nbsp;32&nbsp;kamikaze&nbsp;drones... of which&nbsp;25&nbsp;were destroyed by Ukrainian air defence forces. The&nbsp;Russian&nbsp;occupiers directed most of the attack UAVs to the&nbsp;Kyiv&nbsp;region,"&nbsp;Ukraine's armed forces said in a statement.</p>

<h2><strong>Air defence system in action</strong></h2>

<p>Kyiv's air defence system sprung into action as multiple drones approached the city, causing a series of explosions that sent shockwaves throughout the region. An AFP journalist present in Kyiv at the time reported hearing approximately ten explosions, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.</p>

<p>Kyiv's Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, took to Telegram to provide updates and guidance to the public. He confirmed the presence of an active air defence system in the Kyiv region and the city itself, acknowledging the imminent threat posed by additional unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) heading toward Kyiv.</p>

<p>"Air defence system is working in Kyiv region and in the capital. More UAVs are moving in the direction of Kyiv," Mayor Klitschko wrote.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the aftermath of the attack, medical teams were deployed in Kyiv's Podilskyi district to assist individuals who had experienced severe stress reactions due to the falling debris.&nbsp;</p>

Kyiv military officials reported that Ukraine was targeted by a total of 32 Russian drones, with 25 of them successfully intercepted and neutralised. "The occupiers attacked Ukraine with 32 kamikaze drones... of which 25 were destroyed by Ukrainian air defence forces. The Russian occupiers directed most of the attack UAVs to the Kyiv region," Ukraine's armed forces said in a statement. Air defence system in action Kyiv's air defence system sprung into action as multiple drones approached the city, causing a series of explosions that sent shockwaves throughout the region. An AFP journalist present in Kyiv at the time reported hearing approximately ten explosions, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. Kyiv's Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, took to Telegram to provide updates and guidance to the public. He confirmed the presence of an active air defence system in the Kyiv region and the city itself, acknowledging the imminent threat posed by additional unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) heading toward Kyiv. "Air defence system is working in Kyiv region and in the capital. More UAVs are moving in the direction of Kyiv," Mayor Klitschko wrote. In the aftermath of the attack, medical teams were deployed in Kyiv's Podilskyi district to assist individuals who had experienced severe stress reactions due to the falling debris. Russia deploys 32 kamikaze drones in attack on Kyiv, 25 intercepted

<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday (September 8), accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of killing Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin who died in a plane crash in&nbsp;August.</p>

<p>He underlined the incident showed that the Russian leader was now politically weak.</p>

<p>“The fact that he killed Prigozhin - at least that's the information we all have, not any other kind - that also speaks to his rationality, and about the fact that he is weak. It is important that he became politically weak," Zelenskiy said in a speech.</p>

<p>On August 23, Wagner mercenary group chief Prigozhin lost his life along with nine others in a plane crash. The plane had&nbsp;departed from&nbsp;Moscow for Saint Petersburg.</p>

<h2><strong>Who all died in the crash?&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency released the names of two pilots and one flight attendant who lost their lives in the deadly crash. The agency cited the airline to confirm that Captain Aleksei Levshin, co-pilot Rustam Karimov, and flight attendant Kristina Raspopova died.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The agency also released the names of those who were onboard, apart from Prigozhin. The list includes Sergey Propustin, Evgeniy Makaryan, Aleksandr Totmin, and Nikolay Matuseev. Two names stood out — Valeriy Chekalov and Dmitry Utkin. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Chekalov was a senior aide to Prigozhin designated by the US Treasury for acting "for or on behalf of Prigozhin and has facilitated shipments of munitions to the Russian Federation".</p>

<p>On the other hand, Utkin was Prigozhin's right-hand man who helped establish the mercenary group and bore the call sign "Wagner".&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Prigozhin expressed risks to his life in video</strong></h2>

<p>In a video that was released late last month, Prigozhin could be seen speaking about speculations over his well-being and possible threats to his security. He said that he was in Africa.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the short video published by the Grey Zone Telegram channel which is linked to his Wagner Group, Prigozhin is seen sharing: "For those who are discussing whether I'm alive or not, how I'm doing - right now it's the weekend, second half of August 2023, I'm in Africa."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"So for people who like to discuss wiping me out, or my private life, how much I earn or whatever else - everything's ok," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While decoding the details of the video, it was found that it was indeed filmed in Africa as his camouflage attire, hat, and the watch on his right hand matched his appearance in a video released on August 21, which he also claimed was filmed in Africa. WION can't independently verify the video.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The reference to "weekend" in the video implied the latest clip must have been made on August 19 or 20, just three or four days before Prigozhin and other top Wagner figures and bodyguards were killed in the crash.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kremlin has denied any involvement but there have been claims and counterclaims. However, Prigozhin's comments in the video reflect his awareness of the risks to his life.&nbsp;</p>

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claims Russian leader Vladimir Putin killed Wagner chief Prigozhin

Early on Sunday, Russia attacked Kyiv with an airstrike, leaving the Ukrainian capital and its surroundings shaken for about two hours and drone debris landing on several of the city's core districts, according to Ukrainian officials.

Russia-Ukraine War: Ukrainian authorities claim yet another Russian nightly assault

<p>The Russian military has reportedly withdrawn a regional task force from neighbouring Belarus. This withdrawal has drawn attention from Ukrainian border authorities and independent Belarusian war monitors, shedding light on the evolving dynamics in the region.</p>

<h2><strong>Background: Lukashenko's deployment</strong></h2>

<p>The backdrop to this withdrawal lies in Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko's announcement in October 2022. Lukashenko had asserted the need for a joint regional group of military forces, citing concerns over Ukraine's alleged preparations for an attack on his country. This move set the stage for heightened tensions in Eastern Europe.</p>

<h2><strong>Ukraine's perspective</strong></h2>

<p>Recent statements from the State Border Service of Ukraine indicate that "almost all" of Russia's forces in Belarus have undergone a rotation, signaling a notable shift in the military landscape. According to spokesperson Andrii Demchenko, there have been no additions to the Russian troop presence in Belarus. Consequently, Ukraine perceives the current Russian troop numbers in Belarus as not constituting an immediate threat of a northward invasion into Ukraine.</p>

<h2><strong>The withdrawal timeline</strong></h2>

<p>The withdrawal process appears to have unfolded in stages. Russian personnel reportedly completed their exit from Belarus in early July, with the entire aviation group following suit in early August. This information comes from the Belarusian war monitoring project, Belarussky Hajun, which has been closely tracking these developments. Notably, this monitoring effort has listed 11 attack and transport helicopters, along with nine fighter jets, among the assets that have returned to their home airfields in Russia.</p>

<h2><strong>The Wagner mercenary outfit</strong></h2>

<p>A potentially significant factor in the regional dynamics is the presence of around 2,500 fighters affiliated with the Wagner mercenary outfit. These mercenaries had agreed to be stationed in Belarus following a failed mutiny during the summer. While other Russian forces have reportedly withdrawn, these fighters appear to remain stationed in Belarus. This situation has been reported by Russia's investigative outlet, iStories.</p>

<p>Notably, Russia's defence ministry has maintained silence regarding the reported withdrawal of its troops from Belarus. This lack of official comment adds an air of mystery to the situation, leaving room for speculation about the motives and implications of the withdrawal.</p>

<h2><strong>Lukashenko's role and accusations</strong></h2>

<p>Alexander Lukashenko, a longtime ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has faced accusations of facilitating Moscow's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. These allegations stem from the belief that he allowed Russian forces to assemble and launch attacks from Belarusian territory. Despite this, Belarus officially remains a non-belligerent in the ongoing conflict.</p>

<p>In a parallel development, Belarus has found itself targeted by Western sanctions, mirroring the measures aimed at Russia over its assault on Ukraine. These sanctions underscore the interconnectedness of the two nations' actions in the regional geopolitical landscape.</p>

Ukraine shares its own ‘closer to reality’ version of Delhi G20 Summit declaration

<p>India championed the G20 Summit as the world leaders reached a consensus over the language used for the Russia-Ukraine war in the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration.&nbsp; The full text of the Delhi Declaration, which was shared by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), called upon upholding "the principles of international law including territorial integrity and sovereignty" of states. However it refrained from making any critical mention&nbsp;of&nbsp;Russia. Ukraine, however, was mentioned a total of four times in the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration adopted and released in the second session of the G20 Summit on Day 1.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 2022 Bali G20 Summit in Indonesia, was also dominated by the Russia-Ukraine war however there is a stark contrast between the then declaration and at the summit under India's presidency.</p>

<p>The G20 Leaders’ Declaration which was adopted at the Bali summit in Bali had rebuked Russia as an aggressor.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Bali Declaration condemned "in the strongest terms the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine and demands its complete and unconditional withdrawal from the territory of Ukraine”.</p>

<p>“Most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine and stressed it is causing immense human suffering and exacerbating existing fragilities in the global economy — constraining growth, increasing inflation, disrupting supply chains, heightening energy and food insecurity, and elevating financial stability risks. There were other views and different assessments of the situation and sanctions. Recognising that the G20 is not the forum to resolve security issues, we acknowledge that security issues can have significant consequences for the global economy," the Bali text read.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, India was able to carve out a consensus at the G20 Summit and was able to work out a language that did not condemn Russia in a straightforward manner yet roped in everyone to agree to the declaration on the issue that was anticipated to be a big roadblock earlier.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The Delhi Declaration mentions that the G20 forum notes with “deep concern the immense human suffering and the adverse impact of wars and conflicts around the world”.</p>

India championed the G20 Summit as the world leaders reached a consensus over the language used for the Russia-Ukraine war in the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration.

India championed the G20 Summit as the world leaders reached a consensus over the language used for the Russia-Ukraine war in the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration. The full text of the Delhi Declaration, which was shared by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), called upon upholding "the principles of international law including territorial integrity and sovereignty" of states. However it refrained from making any critical mention of Russia. Ukraine, however, was mentioned a total of four times in the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration adopted and released in the second session of the G20 Summit on Day 1. The 2022 Bali G20 Summit in Indonesia, was also dominated by the Russia-Ukraine war however there is a stark contrast between the then declaration and at the summit under India's presidency. The G20 Leaders’ Declaration which was adopted at the Bali summit in Bali had rebuked Russia as an aggressor. The Bali Declaration condemned "in the strongest terms the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine and demands its complete and unconditional withdrawal from the territory of Ukraine”. “Most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine and stressed it is causing immense human suffering and exacerbating existing fragilities in the global economy — constraining growth, increasing inflation, disrupting supply chains, heightening energy and food insecurity, and elevating financial stability risks. There were other views and different assessments of the situation and sanctions. Recognising that the G20 is not the forum to resolve security issues, we acknowledge that security issues can have significant consequences for the global economy," the Bali text read. However, India was able to carve out a consensus at the G20 Summit and was able to work out a language that did not condemn Russia in a straightforward manner yet roped in everyone to agree to the declaration on the issue that was anticipated to be a big roadblock earlier. The Delhi Declaration mentions that the G20 forum notes with “deep concern the immense human suffering and the adverse impact of wars and conflicts around the world”. "We call on all states to uphold the principles of international law including territorial integrity and sovereignty, international humanitarian law, and the multilateral system that safeguards peace and stability. The peaceful resolution of conflicts and efforts to address crises as well as diplomacy and dialogue are critical. We will unite in our endeavour to address the adverse impact of the war on the global economy and welcome all relevant and constructive initiatives that support a comprehensive, just, and durable peace in Ukraine that will uphold all the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter for the promotion of peaceful, friendly, and good neighbourly relations among nations in the spirit of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’," mentions the Delhi Declaration shared after Indian PM announced its adoption. Fearing a nuclear war, Elon Musk snipped Starlink services to thwart Ukrainian drone offensive on Russia

The U.S. is about to dispatch 120mm depleted uranium tank rounds to Ukraine. It will become only the second country, after the United Kingdom, to green-light the shipment of this incendiary weapon. Russia has deemed it nothing short of 'criminal.' Priyanka Sharma tells you more.

<p>Ukraine on Friday (Sept. 8) slammed Russia for conducting “sham elections” in Crimea, saying that it was a futile exercise and would have no legal standing.</p>

<p>Russia is holding elections in territories now controlled by it but that originally belong to Ukraine, including Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.</p>

<p>Ukrainian foreign ministry said in a statement that the elections “grossly violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine” as well as international law.</p>

<p>“Russia’s sham elections in the temporarily occupied territories are null and void. They will not have any legal consequences and will not lead to a change in the status of the Ukrainian territories captured by the Russian army,” the statement added.</p>

<p>Along with denouncing elections in Crimea and occupied territories, Ukraine also urged the international community to take note of the developments and not to recognise the results.</p>

<p>On Thursday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemned the “sham elections”, saying that they were “illegitimate”.<br />
<br />
Responding to Blinken’s allegations, the Russian embassy in the US said that the US was meddling in Russia’s internal affairs.</p>

Russia is holding elections in territories now controlled by it but that originally belong to Ukraine, including Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. Ukrainian foreign ministry said in a statement that the elections “grossly violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine” as well as international law. “Russia’s sham elections in the temporarily occupied territories are null and void. They will not have any legal consequences and will not lead to a change in the status of the Ukrainian territories captured by the Russian army,” the statement added. Kyiv demands support from the international community Along with denouncing elections in Crimea and occupied territories, Ukraine also urged the international community to take note of the developments and not to recognise the results. On Thursday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemned the “sham elections”, saying that they were “illegitimate”. Responding to Blinken’s allegations, the Russian embassy in the US said that the US was meddling in Russia’s internal affairs. Military experts opine Ukraine’s counteroffensive woes are continuing, with recent gains a far cry from lighting successes last year. The first casualty of the Ukrainian counteroffensive was wishful thinking. Any hope that Russian troops would abandon their trenches and flee has now been left far behind on the battlefield. Here's what experts are saying on Ukraine’s woes.

Romania calls for 'urgent investigation' into suspected drone debris near Ukraine

Russia struck the Ukrainian capital Kyiv with its most powerful barrage of missiles and drones since spring. Every gain on the battle field at this moment is being made at a terrible cost. The Ukrainian counteroffensive which has been sluggish since its inception has made very incremental gains. Kyiv claims to have captured the strategic village of Robotyne and its intention is to make its ways towards Melitopol to break Russia's land corridor to Crimea.

<br />
In a statement, the Pentagon said that the 120mm rounds will be for the US M1 Abrams, as it referred to the tanks that Washington has provided to provide to Kyiv. The uranium's density, which is around 1.7 times that of lead, helps the ammunition punch through heavy armour.<br />
<br />
However, it is controversial to provide depleted uranium as it has generally been associated with health hazards such as birth defects and cancer in past conflicts, although the munitions have never been definitively proven to be the cause of such health issues.</p>
