After a hearing at a district court in Kyiv late on Saturday, Kolomoisky, one of Ukraine's richest men, was shown being led away in a blue tracksuit jacket in television footage. He could not be reached for comment.

The Security Service of Ukraine announced the case against Kolomoisky on Saturday morning, publishing photographs on Telegram Messenger showing him being served documents by security officers and signing them.

"It was established that during 2013-2020, Ihor Kolomoisky legalized more than half a billion hryvnias ($14 million) by withdrawing them abroad and using the infrastructure of banks under (his) control," the agency said in a statement.

After the ruling, Zelensky appeared to allude obliquely to the case in his evening address, thanking law enforcement agencies for showing resolve in bringing long-running cases to justice.

"Without a doubt, there will be no more decades-long 'business as usual' for those who plundered Ukraine and put themselves above the law and any rules... The law must work," he said.

<h2>WARTIME CRACKDOWN</h2>

Kolomoisky is seen as one of the class of oligarchs who amassed huge industrial wealth after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union and wielded outsize political and economic influence.

Before Russia's February 2022 invasion, Zelensky and his team passed legislation requiring oligarchs to register and to stay out of politics. The war has eroded the oligarchs' power as industrial assets have been destroyed in the east and south, and their television channels have been broadcasting under a centralised signal.

Before winning the presidency, Zelensky rose to prominence as a comedian and played the role of president on a show aired on a Kolomoisky-owned TV channel. He denies Kolomoisky has had any influence over the government.

During the war, Zelensky has emphasised Ukraine's crackdown on corruption as Kyiv has applied to join the European Union and hopes to secure tens of billions of dollars to help rebuild the country after a war which has no end in sight.

Kolomoisky's detention is not the first wartime move involving him.

Last November, the state took control of stakes in major strategic companies, some of which were associated with the businessman, invoking wartime laws to help the war effort.

Earlier this year, security officials searched Kolomoisky's home in connection with a separate investigation into embezzlement and tax evasion at the country's two largest oil companies partially owned by him.

Kolomoisky is a former owner of leading Ukrainian bank PrivatBank, which was nationalised in late 2016 as part of a clean-up of the banking system.

He has owned assets in the energy, banking, and other sectors, including an influential television channel.

The United States imposed sanctions on Kolomoisky in 2021 "due to his involvement in significant corruption". US&nbsp;authorities have also alleged Kolomoisky and a business partner laundered stolen funds through the United States. Kolomoisky has denied any wrongdoing.&nbsp;

Several fires also broke out in civilian residences due to falling debris, he said, but they had since been put out. There were no deaths or injuries.

Odesa is one of Ukraine’s two major grain-exporting ports on the Danube River in the south of the region.

War-ravaged Ukraine urges India to fund post-war reconstruction efforts

Russia claimed to have shot down three Ukrainian naval drones that were targeting the Crimea bridge early on Saturday (September 2), said Moscow.

"On September 2, at about 02.20 am Moscow time (2320 GMT Friday), the third Ukrainian semi-submersible unmanned boat, sent by the Kyiv regime to carry out a terrorist attack on the Crimean bridge, was destroyed in the Black Sea," said Russia's Ministry of Defence on Telegram.

Russia’s Lavrov calls UN meetings with Zelensky ‘unacceptable’; threatens to block G20 declaration

Kyiv police, on Friday (September 1), reported bomb threats to the schools in the Ukrainian capital as children returned to schools for their second academic year since Russia's aggression.

Kyiv's police said its forces were reviewing educational buildings.

"We have received information about explosives in Kyiv's schools," news agency AFP quoted police spokeswoman Yulia Girdvilis as saying.

"All educational institutions are being checked by Kyiv police forces with the involvement of the State Emergency Service," she said.

The police also said that they would be collectively making a decision with the schools if any evacuations were to be made, further calling on the people to "stay calm."

Ukraine's education ministry in a statement said that nearly four million students are returning to learning, both virtually and in the classroom.

<h2>Thousands of schools in Ukraine damaged by attacks: Authorities</h2>

Kyiv has condemned the move and urged the citizens living in the "occupied areas" to not vote in the election, adding they should "leave the region" if possible.

"Russians have started holding 'elections' to pseudo-local councils and 'legislative bodies' in the temporarily occupied territories," Ukraine's National Resistance Centre (NRC), an official agency, was quoted as saying by CNN.&nbsp;

“Even if suddenly, by some incomprehensible command from above, the West offers us to return to more or less normal contacts, we will already think whether we should do this, and if so, in what areas,” said Lavrov.&nbsp;

“We will not agree to interact with the West, on which our security depends in every sense: military-political security, economic, technological,” he added.&nbsp;

The Rusia-Ukraine war began last year in February and has dragged on for over 500 days with thousands of casualties and billions in damages. Despite Kyiv initiating a counteroffensive earlier this year, not much has changed on the ground.&nbsp;

Moscow holds local elections in occupied parts of Ukraine

Ukraine's military intelligence chief, on Friday (September 1), said that the recent drone attack on an airport in Russia, that damaged several military transport planes, was carried out from within Russian territory.

"The drones used to attack the 'Kresty' air base in Pskov were launched from Russia," Kyrylo Budanov wrote on social media Friday.

"Four Russian IL-76 military transport planes were hit as a result of the attack. Two were destroyed and two were seriously damaged," he added.

Budanov said that the defence ministry had been using the aircraft to transport troops and cargo.

The Kremlin released a statement earlier this week saying that the military experts were working to find out which routes drones are taking in order "to prevent such situations in the future".&nbsp;

Turkey's foreign minister said on Thursday (August 31) that reviving Ukrainian grain deal was 'critical' for food security. Hakan Fidan, Turkish Foreign Minister was in Moscow.

"We underlined its critical role for global food security and stability in the Black Sea," he said during joint media appearance with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Fidan was in Moscow for preparations for an informal summit between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Turkey had helped broker the pre-existing grain deal between Ukraine and Russia that created safe passage for Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea. Russia pulled out of the deal last month.

Since then, both Russia and Ukraine have planned to begin shipping grain outside the framework of the deal.

Turkey underlines 'critical' need to revive Ukraine grain deal

Russian officials on Thursday (August 31) said that fresh Ukrainian attacks were thwarted by them a day after at least six regions were targeted by Ukrainian drones. One of the drone strikes, which targeted an airfield far from the border of Ukraine, destroyed military transport planes. 
 
Meanwhile, Ukraine's military claimed that its six servicemen were killed in a crash of two helicopters near Bakhmut. In the latest announcements, Russia on the other hand said that two Ukrainian drones were downed by its anti-aircraft units in the southern Bryansk region.

The head of Crimea said that they had intercepted a Ukrainian cruise missile. Speaking about the attacks on Bryansk and five other regions including Moscow, the Russian foreign ministry stated that the attacks would "not go unpunished". 
 
In northern Russia, a military airfield caught massive fire in the city of Pskov where they have garrisoned elite paratroopers. As per TASS news agency, around four Il-76 transport planes suffered damages and two of them had "burst into flames".

This is due to the fact that the dollars made from the sale of oil may be converted into more rubles, which can then be used to fund government operations, employee wages, and pensions.

However, the Russian ruble fell to its lowest on August 14, below 100 rubles to the dollar. In order to reduce local demand for imports, the central bank implemented a significant emergency interest rate increase of 3.5 percentage points. After the rate hike, the currency increased to 92 to the dollar, but it has since slowly declined; on Wednesday, it was trading at 96 to the dollar.
