The Pentagon said that Poland has asked for 96 Apache attack helicopters and equipment related to it, along with 1,844 Hellfire missiles and 508 Stinger missiles.

The sale "will improve Poland's capability to meet current and future threats by providing a credible force that is capable of deterring adversaries and participating in NATO operations," a State Department statement said.

Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak confirmed the purchase on social media, stating that "until the procedures are completed and the purchased helicopters are delivered to Poland, the US Army will provide us with Apache helicopters from its own resources."

Last year, Poland decided to acquire the Apaches to replace its age-old Soviet-era helicopter fleet after concerns grew over Russia's military action in neighbouring Ukraine.

The NATO member has actively backed US-led measures to support Ukraine against Russian invasion with billion-dollar investment in US weapons delivered to Ukraine traversing the border through Poland.

A Dutch government spokesperson told AFP that Zelensky’s flight landed around midday (1000 GMT). Meanwhile, the Ukrainian president announced his and his wife&nbsp;Olena’s arrival in the Netherlands, on social media and said, “Olena and I arrived in the Netherlands with the team.”

During his surprise visit, Zelensky met with outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte at a Dutch military air base in Eindhoven.

The Ukrainian president on social media also said, “The main issue is F-16 for Ukraine to protect our people from Russian terror. We are getting stronger.” Speaking about the agenda, he said that it includes the Global Peace Summit and bringing Russia to justice.

<h2>Ukraine’s air defence push</h2>

In recent months, the Netherlands, together with Denmark, has led international efforts to train Ukrainian pilots for F-16 fighter jets ahead of delivering the jets to help counter the Russian air superiority, amid Moscow’s ongoing war in Kyiv.&nbsp;

According to the Ukrainian president, the planes would help strengthen Ukraine’s air defences and help its counter-offensive.&nbsp;

“We are speaking about air defence, because we have the winter ahead of us and we understand more than anyone else in the world what winter without electricity is like,” said Zelensky, in the Netherlands.&nbsp;

<h2>Zelensky’s visit to Denmark</h2>

Hours after the meeting with the Dutch PM in the Netherlands, Zelensky landed at Skrydstrup airbase in southern Denmark, at around 1430 GMT, reported AFP.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian president was greeted by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Defence Minister Jakob Ellemann-Jensen.

Frederiksen reaffirmed support for Ukraine and said it is ready to do so “for as long as necessary.” She also said that Denmark will deliver 19 jets in total, with the first six due to be shipped to Ukraine around New Year.&nbsp;

This will be followed by eight in 2024 and five the following year, she added. “We know that your freedom is our freedom. We also know that you need more” weapons, said Frederiksen during a joint press conference with Zelensky.&nbsp; 
 
The Danish PM said over 70 Ukrainian military officials had arrived in Denmark for training. Ukraine said that it expects several dozens of pilots to be trained but it was not immediately clear how many pilots had arrived in Denmark.

During all this period, the Western countries, led by the USA have poured in billions of dollars into Ukraine. The USA has even provided ammunition, missile systems and more to Ukrainian forces. The help has been of vital importance.

However, Ukraine has long been requesting US-made F-16 fighter jets for its use in the battlefield to defend its territory. And the US has long been reluctant to provide a blank cheque. There have been concerns in the Western decision-making circles that Ukraine may use F-16 jets to cross the frontier and carry out air attacks inside the Russian territory. Ukraine has often sought to assuage these fears by saying that F-16 fighter jets, if they are provided, will be used for defensive purposes.

Ukraine has a small air force. At the start of the war, almost all fighter planes Ukraine had were old, Soviet-standard fighters. Ukraine had about 120 combat-capable planes. Media reports suggest that the number has fallen as the war has continued. Ukraine does have air capability, but it just might not be enough to effectively defend or attack.

F-16 fighter jet is far superior to jets currently in Ukraine's fleet. Ukraine hasn't used much airpower since the start of the war. F-16 can change that.

Even Russia has been reluctant to use its fighter jets much beyond the frontier, it is considered that Russian air defence systems are effective and it would be hard for current fleet of Ukrainian fighter jet to evade Russians and mount an attack that makes a difference.

Although the Western countries have rallied to help Ukraine, the overall approach has been to contain and even cease the hostilities. Ukraine war has had non-military ramifications like grain shortage, fuel crisis and more. And with nuclear threats coming out from the Russian camp periodically, no one would want an escalation.

Providing F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine would not only be just an act of military help, it would carry symbolism beyond that. With F-16 in its ranks, the battlefield equation may change in Ukraine's favour, in the air combat to start with.

Supply of F-16s from US to Ukraine would thus enrage Russia and currently its further steps can only be speculated. China has been providing diplomatic cover to Russia and largely stood behind it. Though China maintains that a diplomatic solution should be reached, fact remains that it has lent support to Russia. Escalation of Ukraine war with Russia and China coming together in greater degree would certainly not be contributive to resolving the situation peacefully.

<h2>So no hopes for Ukraine after all?</h2>

Although US is dragging feet on the issue of F-16s, all is not lost for Ukraine as Europe is giving it some hope.&nbsp;

On Sunday (August 20) the Netherlands and Denmark committed to providing F-16s to Ukraine. Prime ministers of both the countries gave Ukrainian President Volodymy Zelensky this assuarance as he travelled to the two countries to meet the premiers. It has been assured that first deliveries will be due around New Year.

Such a transfer has got a green signal from the US.

Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov in a TV interview informed about the training, adding that it would take at least six months or possibly longer to complete it.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Therefore, to build reasonable expectations, set a minimum of six months in your mind, but do not be disappointed if it is longer," said&nbsp;Reznikov, adding that he would not give details on where and when the training was taking place,&nbsp;

Earlier this week, the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken assured his&nbsp;Danish and Dutch counterparts that Washington will&nbsp;accelerate clearance of F-16 transfer requests for the war-torn nation after the pilots are trained.&nbsp;

"I am writing to express the United States' full support for both the transfer of F-16 fighter aircraft to Ukraine and for the training of Ukrainian pilots by qualified F-16 instructors," wrote Blinken in a letter accessed by Reuters.&nbsp;

"It remains critical that Ukraine is able to defend itself against ongoing Russian aggression and violation of its sovereignty," he added.&nbsp;

He said the approval of the requests would allow Ukraine to take "full advantage of its new capabilities as soon as the first set of pilots complete their training".&nbsp;

The Ukrainian Interior Minister&nbsp;Ihor Klymenko later reported that 129 people had been injured, among whom were 15 children and 15 police&nbsp;officers.&nbsp; 
 
According to Ukrainian media reports&nbsp;a public event featuring drone manufacturers had been taking place inside the theatre at the time of the attack. However,&nbsp;Klymenko only confirmed that an&nbsp;unspecified event had been taking place&nbsp;and that&nbsp;Ukraine's domestic security service was investigating the matter.&nbsp;

All services are working on the site. Rescuers, police, doctors. I urge the world to stand up to Russian terror. Provide Ukraine with additional tools to safeguard life. For life to win, Russia must lose this war," he wrote on X.&nbsp;

President Vladimir Putin convened a meeting with Russia's top military leaders at the command post of the Russian "special military operation" in Rostov-on-Don, a city in southern Russia.

Ukraine defences destroyed 15 Russian drones during an attack that took place overnight, Kyiv's air force released a statement on Saturday (August 19).

Further adding details, it said that 17 Iranian-made Shahed drones were used in the aerial assault. However, it did not specify as to what happened to the other two drones.

Russian forces "attacked from the north with 'Shahed-136/131' attack UAVs. A total of 17 attack drones were launched from the Kursk region," the Ukrainian force said on Telegram.

It added that air defences were activated in "northern and central, as well as in the western regions".

"15 enemy drones were destroyed by the forces and means of the Air Force in cooperation with the air defence systems of other components of the Defence Forces of Ukraine."

Russian forces on Friday (August 18) said that they had shot down a Ukrainian drone that was targeted at Moscow and its Black Sea Fleet. The drone, according to the reports, disrupted air traffic at all the civilian airports of the Russian capital.

The Russian defence ministry and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that there were no casualties after air defences destroyed the drone which plummeted over a non-residential building in the capital city's Expo Center complex on Friday.

"The UAV, after being exposed to air defence weapons, changed its flight path and fell on a non-residential building in the Krasnopresnenskaya embankment area of Moscow," the ministry said on Telegram.

"The wreckage of the UAV fell in the area of the Expo Centre, and did not cause significant damage to the building," Sergei Sobyanin said on Telegram.

As per the state-run news agency TASS, one of the walls of the venue's pavilion had partially collapsed.

"The area of the collapse is about 30 square meters (323 square feet)," emergency services told TASS.

Citing aviation services, TASS reported that the airspace near the international airport of Vnukovo was briefly closed, delaying departures and arrivals.

The defence ministry further said that the drills also included practicing the "replenishment of fuel reserves by ships and the transfer of cargo on the go", adding that the joint detachment of ships had covered more than 6,400 nautical miles since the start of the exercises.

<h2>Moscow-Beijing ties</h2>

In recent years, the ties between Russia and China have strengthened, as the war with Ukraine has ravaged Russia's relationship with Western governments.

On Monday (August 14), a Chinese defence ministry spokesperson said that naval fleets were conducting maritime patrols in the western and northern regions of the Pacific Ocean.

"These actions are not aimed at a third party and are not related to the current international and regional situation," the spokesperson added.

Earlier this week, Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu visited Russia where he attended the 11th Moscow Conference on International Security and called for closer military cooperation.

Recently, Moscow and Beijing have increased their bilateral defence collaboration as they carried out a joint air patrol over the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea in the month of July.&nbsp;

Russia, China conduct joint maritime patrols in Pacific Ocean

Russia said its forces have repelled multiple assaults from Ukraine in the directions of Zaporizhian, Luhansk and Donetsk.
