Romanian Foreign Minister Luminita Odobescu on Monday (September 4) denied reports of Romanian territory being hit by Russian drones during an overnight air strike carried out on a Ukrainian port across the Danube River.

"Of course, there is a risk because what happened there is very close to our borders," said Minister Odobescu, while speaking to the reporters on the sidelines of a visit to Berlin.

"We have seen that Russia cynically continues to attack the civilian infrastructure, not allowing Ukraine to export their cereals. Of course, there is a risk of accidents or incidents, but for the time being, it was not the case,” she said.

"The Minister of Defence and all the institutions responsible in the field, monitored in real-time the situation generated by the Russian drone attacks conducted last night against the infrastructure of Reni seaport. The drone attacks conducted by the Russian Federation did not pose any direct military threats against our national territory or Romania's territorial waters," the minister added.

Romania denies reports of being hit amid Russian drone attack on Ukrainian port

Pope Francis on Monday (September 4) accepted that his recent comments on Russia, which were perceived as praise for imperialism by Ukraine, were poorly phrased.

The pope stated that he intended to remind Russia's cultural heritage and not political one to its young citizens. While interacting with reporters aboard the plane on his way back from Mongolia, Francis stated that he wished to assure China, which has complicated relations with the Vatican, that the Catholic Church should not be considered a foreign power with any ulterior motives.

"I was not thinking of imperialism when I said that," said Francis, reacting to the comments he made last month. In a video conference held on August 25, Pope Francis talked about tsars Peter I and Catherine II, who had expanded Russian territory, and told the young Russian Catholics that they were the heirs of the "great Russian empire".

The remarks led to an uproar in Ukraine because the two Russian monarchs' legacies were invoked by Russian President Vladimir Putin while he was trying to justify the invasion of Ukraine.

"Maybe it wasn't the best way of putting it, but in speaking of the great Russia, I was thinking not so much geographically but culturally," said Francis, while referring to Russian literary icon Fyodor Dostoevsky.

"It was an off-the-cuff comment that came to mind because I studied it (Russian history) in school. Russian culture is of such beauty, such profoundness. It should not be cancelled because of political problems. There were dark political years in Russia but the heritage is there, available to all," he stated.

<h2>'Catholic Church is not a foreign power'</h2>

Speaking about the Vatican-China relations, Francis said: "I think we have to move forward in the religious aspect in order to understand each other better so that Chinese citizens do not think the Church does not accept their culture and their values and (do not think) that the Church represents another foreign power."

Pope Francis accepts his Russia comments were 'badly phrased', 'faulty'

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will be travelling to Russia this month where he will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the need to provide weapons for the ongoing war against Ukraine, reported the New York Times on Monday (September 4), citing US and allied sources.

Kim is likely to board an armoured train from Pyongyang to Vladivostok on the Pacific Coast of Russia, where he is set to meet Putin, said the newspaper.

The planned trip will take place as Russia and North Korea have been discussing holding joint military exercises after Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu visited North Korea during which he tried to convince Pyongyang to let Russia purchase artillery ammunition.

As per reports, Putin wants North Korea to provide Russia with artillery shells and antitank missiles, and Kim wishes Russia to share the advanced technology for the nuclear-powered submarines and satellites, as per the officials. On his trip, Kim is also hoping to seek food aid for his impoverished nation.

The two leaders will be present on the campus of Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok to attend the Eastern Economic Forum, which is scheduled to run from September 10 to 13, as per the officials.

Kim is also likely to visit Pier 33, where naval ships from the Pacific fleet of Russia dock, officials stated. The anniversary of its founding is celebrated by North Korea on September 9.

<h2>US reacts to reports of Putin-Kim meeting</h2>

The White House on Monday (September 4) stated that Kim Jong Un is expected to hold a "leader-level diplomatic engagement" with President Putin in Russia.

"As we have warned publicly, arms negotiations between Russia and the DPRK are actively advancing," said National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson, using an acronym for the North, adding that "we have information that Kim Jong Un expects these discussions to continue, to include leader-level diplomatic engagement in Russia."

North Korea's Kim Jong Un to visit Putin in Russia for discussion on weapons supply

The governor of the western Bryansk region in Russia claimed that the security forces and border guards had "thwarted" an attempt made by a Ukrainian sabotage group to try to cross the border and enter Russia.

This year, Russia has repeatedly reported sabotage attempts by Ukrainians on its borders. "Employees of the FSB border force of Russia and units of the Russian defence ministry thwarted an attempt to penetrate the territory of the Russian Federation by a Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group," said Bryansk governor Alexander Bogomaz on Telegram.

The Bryansk region is located in western Russia, which shares a border with Ukraine and Moscow-allied Belarus. Like other border regions of Russia, it has come under regular attacks and shelling by Ukraine amid Moscow's offensive in Kyiv.

<h2>Kyiv gives name of Russia's defected helicopter pilot</h2>

Ukraine on Monday (September 4) announced the name of a Russian helicopter pilot which it said defected because of his opposition to the invasion of Moscow after crossing the border in a "long-term special operation" led by Kyiv.

Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate, the defence ministry's intelligence wing, revealed the identity of the pilot as 28-year-old Maxim Kuzminov, who was earlier part of the "319th separate helicopter regiment" which was based in the Far Eastern Primorye region of Russia.

In a statement, the Main Intelligence Directorate talked about how the operation was led in "maximum secrecy", by first carrying out the pilot's recruitment after identifying that he did not support the invasion by the Kremlin.

The department claimed that they assisted the pilot in flying into Ukraine and that two of the crew members of the helicopter, who were unaware of the plans of Kuzminov to go to Ukraine and defect - were killed after they refused to surrender.

A video of the pilot was also published. In the video, Kuzminov said, "I contacted representatives of the intelligence of Ukraine, and explained my situation. I was offered security guarantees, new documents, monetary compensation, a reward. We discussed the details and started planning my flight directly."

"The finale of the operation is a helicopter flight to the specified spot and handover to the Ukrainian military. What started as somewhat of a joke has now got transformed into a platform that has so far raised 800,000 euros for Ukraine's war effort. The origin story of TerOnlyFans is being described as 'nudes for war effort'.

Nastassia Nasko (25) from Belarus and her friend Anastasia Kuchmenko (28) wanted to help Ukrainian war effort. Nastassia has a background in IT and marketing while Anastasia is an art graduate. But their effort to raise support was not going beyond likes and reposts and so on.

"When the full-scale invasion started, we were in Warsaw and it was difficult for us to accept the fact that we were not in Ukraine and could not help or volunteer, and we did not have a lot of money to send to the Ukrainian defenders,” she told Euronews.

'Nudes for war effort' | A joke ends up raising thousands for Ukrainian defenders: Report

Russian military fired Moscow's vaunted Kinzhal hypersonic missile at Ukraine using a Su-34 fighter bomber for the first time. The missiles are typically fired from Russia's Soviet-era Mig-31. Earlier reports suggested Moscow was looking to modify the Tu-22m3 strategic bombers, but this is the first indication that a new set of aircraft has successfully launched the Kinzhal. Here's more on hypersonic weapons and the Su-34 fighter bomber...

The counteroffensive by Ukraine is continuing. An early dawn assault on Russian defenses close to the village of Bakhmut was captured on camera by the Azov battalion of Ukraine. Months after mercenaries backed by Moscow took control of the eastern city in a highly symbolic triumph, there are now violent, ongoing fire fights taking place there.

A Ukrainian court ordered tycoon Ihor Kolomoisky to be held in custody for two months on suspicion of fraud and money laundering on Saturday, a striking move against one of the country's most powerful businessmen.

The detention of Kolomoisky, who is under US&nbsp;sanctions and is a one-time supporter of President Volodymyr Zelensky whose election he backed in 2019, comes as Kyiv is trying to signal progress during a wartime crackdown on corruption.

Defence lawyers said Kolomoisky would appeal the ruling, questioning its legality, but that he would not post bail of almost $14 million in order to secure his release, broadcaster Radio Liberty reported.

After a hearing at a district court in Kyiv late on Saturday, Kolomoisky, one of Ukraine's richest men, was shown being led away in a blue tracksuit jacket in television footage. He could not be reached for comment.

The Security Service of Ukraine announced the case against Kolomoisky on Saturday morning, publishing photographs on Telegram Messenger showing him being served documents by security officers and signing them.

"It was established that during 2013-2020, Ihor Kolomoisky legalized more than half a billion hryvnias ($14 million) by withdrawing them abroad and using the infrastructure of banks under (his) control," the agency said in a statement.

After the ruling, Zelensky appeared to allude obliquely to the case in his evening address, thanking law enforcement agencies for showing resolve in bringing long-running cases to justice.

"Without a doubt, there will be no more decades-long 'business as usual' for those who plundered Ukraine and put themselves above the law and any rules... The law must work," he said.

<h2>WARTIME CRACKDOWN</h2>

Kolomoisky is seen as one of the class of oligarchs who amassed huge industrial wealth after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union and wielded outsize political and economic influence.

Before Russia's February 2022 invasion, Zelensky and his team passed legislation requiring oligarchs to register and to stay out of politics. The war has eroded the oligarchs' power as industrial assets have been destroyed in the east and south, and their television channels have been broadcasting under a centralised signal.

Before winning the presidency, Zelensky rose to prominence as a comedian and played the role of president on a show aired on a Kolomoisky-owned TV channel. He denies Kolomoisky has had any influence over the government.

During the war, Zelensky has emphasised Ukraine's crackdown on corruption as Kyiv has applied to join the European Union and hopes to secure tens of billions of dollars to help rebuild the country after a war which has no end in sight.

Kolomoisky's detention is not the first wartime move involving him.

Last November, the state took control of stakes in major strategic companies, some of which were associated with the businessman, invoking wartime laws to help the war effort.

Earlier this year, security officials searched Kolomoisky's home in connection with a separate investigation into embezzlement and tax evasion at the country's two largest oil companies partially owned by him.

Kolomoisky is a former owner of leading Ukrainian bank PrivatBank, which was nationalised in late 2016 as part of a clean-up of the banking system.

He has owned assets in the energy, banking, and other sectors, including an influential television channel.

The United States imposed sanctions on Kolomoisky in 2021 "due to his involvement in significant corruption". US&nbsp;authorities have also alleged Kolomoisky and a business partner laundered stolen funds through the United States. Kolomoisky has denied any wrongdoing.&nbsp;

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday (September 3) announced that he was replacing Kyiv's defence minister Oleksiy Reznikov, terming the move as a 'new approach' in the ministry.

"Oleksiy Reznikov has been through more than 550 days of full-scale war," Zelensky said in his daily evening address. "I believe that the ministry needs new approaches and other formats of interaction with both the military and society at large."

He nominated Rustem Umerov, a Crimean Tatar who has been head of the State Property Fund since last year, to replace Reznikov.&nbsp;

"Now Rustem Umerov should be the head of the (defence) ministry," Zelensky said in his evening address. "I expect parliament to support this candidate."

The announcement, made by Zelensky in his nightly video address to the nation, sets the stage for the biggest shakeup in Ukraine's defence establishment during the war launched by Russia in February 2022.

Reznikov, who was named defence minister in November 2021, has helped secure billions of dollars of Western military aid to help the war effort but has been shadowed by graft accusations surrounding his ministry.

The change of defence minister must be approved by parliament but is most likely to be supported by a majority of lawmakers in Verkhovna Rada. Zelensky said he expected parliament to approve Umerov's appointment.

The local media reported that&nbsp;the former defence minister had earlier said if&nbsp;Zelensky offered the opportunity for him to work on another project he would probably agree.

His dismissal comes amid a wider anti-corruption drive in Zelensky's administration, as it is imperative for Ukraine to weed&nbsp;out graft in the war-hit state since it is seen as essential to Ukraine's desire to join Western institutions like the EU.

Meanwhile, Russia said it hit targets on the Danube port of Reni, on the border with NATO member Romania. Russia hits Ukraine's Danube port on Romanian border According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the Ukrainian Air Force said that its air defence systems shot down 22 of the 25 Iranian-made Shahed drones that Russia launched on the Odesa region in the early hours of Sunday. "Russian terrorists continue to attack port infrastructure in the hope of provoking a food crisis and famine in the world," the Ukrainian president's chief of staff Andriy Yermak wrote on Telegram and posted a photograph of a firefighter directing water at the burning ruins of concrete structures. In a statement, the Russian army said it "carried out a group drone strike on fuel storage facilities used to supply military equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the port of Reni, in the Odesa region." It added, "All designated targets were hit." Romania 'strongly condemns' attack on Danube After the attack, Romanian defence ministry released a statement and strongly condemned repeated Russian attacks on Ukraine's Danube port and called it "unjustified". The "reiterates in the strongest terms that these attacks against civilian targets and infrastructure in Ukraine are unjustified and in deep contradiction with the rules of international humanitarian law". It added, "At no time did the means of attack used by the Russian Federation generate any direct military threat to the national territory or territorial waters of Romania." Two killed in biggest Russian strike in Kyiv in months Sunday's drone attack came three days after Russia launched its biggest airstrike in Kyiv in months, killing two people. Reuters reported three people were wounded in the strike and combat drones attacked infrastructure in the central region of Zhytomyr. "The blast wave broke all the windows, the entry doors are broken too. We were terribly scared," said Liudmyla Savchuk, a 57-year-old teacher whose apartment in northwestern Kyiv was damaged. "Then there was another explosion in a couple of seconds, 20 or 30 seconds. We're cleaning everything now," Savchuk added. Russia has conducted regular, but smaller, air strikes on Kyiv this summer, and hit the Ukrainian capital with large-scale aerial attacks in May. "Kyiv has not experienced such a powerful attack since spring. The enemy launched a massive, combined attack using drones and missiles," Serhiy Popko, the head of the city's military administration said on Telegram. NATO countries on the Baltic Sea as well as other nations from the United States-led military alliance will participate in a major naval drill involving some 30 ships and over 3,000 service members for the first time to practise how to respond to a Russian attack in the region, said the German navy chief on Friday (September 1).&nbsp;

<h2>About the upcoming navy drills</h2>

The upcoming drills will begin on September 9 and involve troops from all NATO countries on the Baltic Sea, plus soon-to-be member Sweden and non-Baltic allies which include the US, Canada, the Netherlands, Belgium and France.&nbsp;

During the two-week Northern Coasts exercise, the countries will practise amphibious operations and strikes from sea to land, reported Reuters. “We are sending a clear message of vigilance to Russia: Not on our watch,” Vice-Admiral Jan Christian Kaack told reporters in Berlin.&nbsp;

He added, “Credible deterrence must include the ability to attack.” The exercise will also focus on securing the sea routes through the Baltic Sea and will take place off the coasts of Latvia and Estonia.&nbsp;

“Finland and the Baltic states depend to almost 100% on the maritime supply routes through the Baltic Sea,” Kaack noted. He added, “Should the Suwalki Gap be blocked - and this can be done easily as there are only two roads and one railroad line - then we are left with the sea routes only, and that’s where we will then have to make our way through.”

The Suwalki Gap is a 65-kilometre narrow land corridor and the only connection between the Baltic states to Poland and NATO’s main territory in Europe.&nbsp;

Kaack also noted that the upcoming exercise will be the first exercise of this size that the German navy, which is also the biggest navy on the Baltic Sea, will command from its new maritime headquarters in Rostock.&nbsp;

The maritime base recently reached operational readiness and aims to act as a regional maritime headquarters for NATO capable of leading the alliance’s operations in the Baltic Sea in case of a conflict, said the German official.&nbsp;

Ukrainian deputy prime minister, on Friday (September 1) said that two cargo vessels have left a port near Odesa through the Black Sea temporary corridor for civilian vessels months after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-russia-formally-backs-out-of-black-sea-grain-deal-what-happens-now-616637">Russia formally backed out</a> of the deal which allowed a safe-passage for ships carrying grain.&nbsp;

Oleksandr Kubrakov said Liberia-flagged Anna-Theresa and Marshall Islands-flagged Ocean Courtesy bulk carriers had left the port of Pivdennyi from the “humanitarian corridor” hugging the western Black Sea coast near Romania and Bulgaria.

The Anna-Theresa, according to the Ukrainian official, had been stuck in the Ukrainian port since February 22, 2022, and the Ocean Courtesy from February 16 of the same year.&nbsp;

The Anna-Theresa and Ocean Courtesy were carrying 56,000 metric tons of pig iron and 172,000 tons of iron ore concentrate, respectively, said Kubrakov, on social media.&nbsp;

The maritime base recently reached operational readiness and aims to act as a regional maritime headquarters for NATO capable of leading the alliance’s operations in the Baltic Sea in case of a conflict, said the German official. Ships leave Ukrainian port Black Sea port under temporary corridor: Kyiv Ukrainian deputy prime minister, on Friday (September 1) said that two cargo vessels have left a port near Odesa through the Black Sea temporary corridor for civilian vessels months after Russia formally backed out of the deal which allowed a safe-passage for ships carrying grain. The Anna-Theresa, according to the Ukrainian official, had been stuck in the Ukrainian port since February 22, 2022, and the Ocean Courtesy from February 16 of the same year. The Anna-Theresa and Ocean Courtesy were carrying 56,000 metric tons of pig iron and 172,000 tons of iron ore concentrate, respectively, said Kubrakov, on social media. Russia claims to shoot down three Ukrainian drones targeting Crimea bridge

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, on Friday (September 1) said that he told the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that online meetings held to discuss Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s peace plan back in August were “unacceptable.” Furthermore, he also warned Russia will block the final declaration of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/india-fortifies-new-delhi-over-130000-officers-air-support-to-ensure-safety-at-g20-summit-631318">upcoming G20 summit</a> unless it reflects Moscow’s position on Ukraine.&nbsp;

During a speech at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, the Russian foreign minister called online meetings held on the Ukrainian president’s peace formula in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-making-sense-of-talks-to-end-ukraine-war-that-did-not-include-russia-622887">August</a>, without Russia “unacceptable,” reported Reuters.&nbsp;

<h2>Russia threatens to block G20 declaration</h2>

Lavrov, who is also due to represent Russia at the upcoming meeting of the Group of 20 countries in New Delhi on September 9-10, said that Russia will block the final declaration of the summit unless it reflects their position on Ukraine and other crises.&nbsp;

The move will force participants to issue a non-binding or partial communique.&nbsp;

“There will be no general declaration on behalf of all members if our position is not reflected,” said Lavrov, on Friday. Moscow has justified its “special military operation” in Ukraine which began in February 2022, as an existential battle with the West which Russian President Vladimir Putin says wants to dismantle Russia and take control of its vast natural resources.

The Russian FM also said that the West had raised the Ukraine issue in meetings ahead of the summit to which Moscow responded by saying that “the issue is closed for us” and accused the West of undermining international institutions by pushing its own agenda.&nbsp;

Lavrov also suggested that if a consensus could not be reached at the G20 meeting, a non-binding communique could be issued by the G20 presidency. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/pm-modi-again-says-not-an-era-of-war-different-platform-but-same-plea-to-end-bloodshed-human-suffering-607589">India</a>, which holds the G20 presidency, has called for peace in Ukraine.&nbsp;

“Another option is to adopt a document that focuses on specific decisions in the sphere of G20 competencies, and let everyone say the rest on their own behalf,” said Lavrov.&nbsp;

<h2>Russia to allocate 1.9 trillion roubles for annexed Ukrainian territories</h2>

The Russian president said that they have planned to allocate 1.9 trillion roubles ($20 billion) from the country’s federal budget over the next two-and-a-half years to the development of four Ukrainian regions annexed which Moscow claimed as a part of its territory.&nbsp;

Notably, Russia reportedly occupies only parts of the regions it claimed and the unilateral annexation has been recognised by only a handful of countries allied with Russia while the move has largely been condemned by Ukraine and its Western allies as well as three-quarters of UN member states.&nbsp;

Police report bomb threats in Kyiv as Ukraine children go back to school

In an attempt to cement their authority in the occupied regions, Russian authorities on Thursday (August 31) began holding elections in parts of&nbsp;Moscow-annexed Ukrainian territories. Russia currently controls one-fifth of Ukraine's territory: the Crimea peninsula annexed in 2014, and parts of&nbsp;Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions annexed in 2022.

Moscow's handpicked governors, which include veteran pro-Russian politicians and others known only locally, are currently seeking full terms of office in the four regions. The polls will conclude on September 10, when Russia holds regional polls, according to a Reuters report.&nbsp;&nbsp;

All governors have the endorsement of President Vladimir Putin after joining the Kremlin's United Russia bloc with fanfare in recent months. Consequently, most are facing only nominal opposition.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov slammed the West saying Moscow will not cooperate with the bloc in areas on which its security depends.

“Even if suddenly, by some incomprehensible command from above, the West offers us to return to more or less normal contacts, we will already think whether we should do this, and if so, in what areas,” said Lavrov.&nbsp;

“We will not agree to interact with the West, on which our security depends in every sense: military-political security, economic, technological,” he added.&nbsp;

Ukraine reacts Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov slammed the West saying Moscow will not cooperate with the bloc in areas on which its security depends. “Even if suddenly, by some incomprehensible command from above, the West offers us to return to more or less normal contacts, we will already think whether we should do this, and if so, in what areas,” said Lavrov. “We will not agree to interact with the West, on which our security depends in every sense: military-political security, economic, technological,” he added. The war extends The Rusia-Ukraine war began last year in February and has dragged on for over 500 days with thousands of casualties and billions in damages. Despite Kyiv initiating a counteroffensive earlier this year, not much has changed on the ground. After weeks of grinding combat, Kyiv is hoping for a major breakthrough in the Zaporizhzhia region after recapturing the village of Robotyne this week. Ukraine's military intelligence chief, on Friday (September 1), said that the recent drone attack on an airport in Russia, that damaged several military transport planes, was carried out from within Russian territory.

"The drones used to attack the 'Kresty' air base in Pskov were launched from Russia," Kyrylo Budanov wrote on social media Friday.

"Four Russian IL-76 military transport planes were hit as a result of the attack. Two were destroyed and two were seriously damaged," he added.

Budanov said that the defence ministry had been using the aircraft to transport troops and cargo.

The Kremlin released a statement earlier this week saying that the military experts were working to find out which routes drones are taking in order "to prevent such situations in the future".&nbsp;

Pskov, which is located roughly 800 kilometres (nearly 500 miles) from the border of Ukraine and the surrounding region borders of EU member states Estonia and Latvia, was also targeted by drones late in the month of May this year.

"The defence ministry is repelling a drone attack in Pskov's airport," regional governor Mikhail Vedernikov had said, taking to social media and sharing a video of massive fire with the sounds of sirens and explosions in the background.

Budanov's comments came hours after Russian air defences destroyed a drone progressing towards Moscow, said the city's mayor, a day after a similar attack on the capital.&nbsp;

Russian officials on Thursday (August 31) said that fresh Ukrainian attacks were thwarted by them after Ukrainian drones targeted at least six regions.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov had earlier said that Russia was trying to find the place from where the drones were launched so that further strikes could be prevented. President Vladimir Putin was immediately informed in the case as per protocols in such cases of "massive attacks", Peskov said.

In a statement, the government of Kyiv confirmed that the Russian planes were destroyed in Pskov. "Yes, four IL-76 transport planes were destroyed in Pskov at an airfield, they are beyond repair. Also, several other of those (aircraft) are damaged, but the information is being checked," said Andriy Yusov, a spokesman for the GUR military agency of Ukraine, while speaking to Reuters.
