Veteran New Zealand pacer Tim Southee will face a race against time to be fit for the upcoming ODI World Cup as he is set to have surgery on his right thumb. Southee dislocated his right thumb while fielding during the ODI series against England at Lord’s which will now see him go under the knife before the prestigious tournament in India. He, though, remains optimistic about his involvement in the World Cup while New Zealand Cricket (NZC) will make a final decision next week when the results of the surgery are revealed.

Suspense on Southee’s selection

"We've got our fingers crossed that the surgery goes well for Tim," head coach Gary Stead said.

"He'll have some pins or screws inserted in his right thumb and, providing the procedure is a success, it will be a matter of ensuring Tim can tolerate the pain and manage the actual wound when returning to train and play.

"Our opening game of the World Cup against England is not until Thursday, October 5 in Ahmedabad, so that would be our logical target in terms of his availability.

"Tim's obviously a hugely experienced and important figure in our team and we want to give him every chance to be part of this World Cup campaign,” added Stead.

Worried NZ side

New Zealand are already sweating on the fitness of skipper Kane Williamson who won’t be 100 per cent fit during the World Cup’s initial phase. Southee’s injury will be a key blow for the side as they get ready for the final phase of the build-up. The Kiwis have been runners-up in the last two editions of the World Cup, having lost to Australia and England in 2015 and 2019, respectively.

New Zealand will participate in a three-match ODI series against Bangladesh starting on Thursday, September 21 before they travel to India for the World Cup warm-up games. They will be playing South Africa and Pakistan in the build-up before kick-starting their campaign against England in the repeat of the 2019 edition’s final.

Both New Zealand and England will meet at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad in the curtain-raiser contest on Thursday, October 5.

Tim Southee set to undergo surgery on dislocated thumb, hopeful for timely return for ODI World Cup

In a big blow to New Zealand's squad for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup, veteran fast bowler Tim Southee has suffered a thumb injury, putting his participation in the quadrennial tournament in doubt. Southee suffered the injury during the last ODI of four-match series against England on September 16 at Lord's.

Southee was fielding at first slip when he suffered the blow to thumb while trying to take a catch to dismiss Joe Root. He immediately let his discomfort known and was escorted off the field with a medical team member. He didn't take any further part in the game and Trent Boult replaced him as a substitute fielder in the match.

The pacer will now head home after initial scans showed that he fractured and dislocated a bone in his right thumb. Speaking about the injury, New Zealand skipper Tom Latham said that more will be revealed about the extent of Southee's injury in coming days.

"It's not ideal for Timmy," Latham said. "He's a massive leader amongst the group and obviously he'll be assessed over the coming days when we get back home to see how bad it is, but we do have a bit of time leading into those first couple of games, so we'll know more over the next couple of days."

"He's a pretty resilient character, so I'm sure he'll be doing all he can to be on the plane, ready for that first game. But it's hard to know at this point what the timeframe will be. Once he gets home and has a few more scans, we'll know the extent of what's going on."

The Kiwis, meanwhile, lost the game by 100 runs and conceded the series 3-1 to England. They next play Bangladesh in a three-ODI series starting from September 21 before facing England in World Cup opener on October 5 in Ahmedabad.

Tim Southee's ODI World Cup participation under doubt after suffering injury in Lord's ODI against England

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan leapfrogged veteran New Zealand star Tim Southee for most wickets in T20Is having scalped a fifer in Chattogram against Ireland. The second T20I saw Shakib go past the Kiwi star having scalped his 136th wicket in the format. Shakib’s fifer also paved way for Bangladesh to win the three-match T20I series by 2-0 with one more match to go on Friday.

Shakib goes top of the pile

Starting the day at 131 wickets, the 36-year-old all-rounder needed three wickets to go level with Southee while needing four to go past him. Shakib reached this landmark after trapping George Dockrell leg-before off the third ball of the sixth over. When he castled Harry Tector three balls later, Shakib reached his second career five-for in this format. Shakib ended with figures of 22/5 from his four overs and was adjourned ‘Player of the Match’ for his performance. He also scored 38 off 22 deliveries while batting first.

The Bangladesh star made his T20I debut all the way back in 2006 against Zimbabwe and has gone on to play 114 T20Is. He has featured in all seven editions of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Bangladesh win T20I series

Having put into bat first, the hosts were at their fluent best as they started on the front foot with openers Rony Talukdar (44 off 23) and Litton Das (83 off 41). The pair put together an opening stand of 124 runs before Talukdar was dismissed while Das soon followed. However, then Towhid Hridoy (24 off 13) and Shakib helped the side reach over 200 runs. In the 17 overs, Bangladesh scored 202/3 with Benjamin White scalping two wickets.

In response to the 203-run target, Ireland were never in the contest after losing six wickets in the powerplays. Only three batters got in double figures for the visitors as Curtis Campher top-scored with 50 while Harry Tector ended with 22 runs. Graham Hume was the only other man to be in double figures with 20 runs.

Ireland in response could only manage 125/9 in their 20 over and ultimately lost the contest by 77 runs and thereby losing the series 2-0.

BAN vs IRE 2nd T20I: Shakib Al Hasan leapfrogs Tim Southee to become leading wicket-taker in shortest format

New Zealand’s Tim Southee claimed his maiden five-for as a Test skipper against Sri Lanka during day two of the first Test in Christchurch. By doing so, he not only surpassed the former Kiwi legend Daniel Vettori on the wickets tally in Tests, but also became New Zealand’s highest wicket-taker across formats. Following his 15th five-wicket haul during the first innings of the ongoing Test, Southee completed his 364th Test wicket and his 708th overall in international cricket.

While Southee is leading the wickets tally on both lists, Vettori is second with 361 wickets in Tests and 705 overall, followed by legendary Richard Hadlee - who has 589 international wickets to his name. Hadlee, however, is New Zealand’s leading wicket-taker in Tests with 431 scalps.

Meanwhile, following an even-steven day one at the Hagley Oval, where Southee had already bagged four wickets, he picked his fifth one in Asitha Fernando to dismiss Sri Lanka for 355 in the first innings. Southee ended with the figures of five for 64 including the big wicket of Kusal Mendis on 87, whereas, Matt Henry picked up four for 80.

New Zealand began well in their first innings as both openers stood tall against the new ball on the greenish track on offer. Tom Latham scored 67 while Daryl Mitchell remained on 40 as Kiwis at stumps on day two were 162 for five.

Sri Lanka, who is ahead in the first Test as things stand, have the spot in the finals of WTC to play for. To realise their dream, they first have to beat New Zealand across both Tests and then also hope for Australia to either win the Ahmedabad match or play a draw. In that case, their PCT would be higher than India and they can qualify for the finals, scheduled to take on June 7th at the Oval in London.

NZ vs ENG, 2nd Test: Kiwis register historic feats after winning Wellington thriller by the barest of margins

Tim Southee's New Zealand team earned two places in international cricket history with its dramatic, one-run comeback win over England in the second test.

England vs New Zealand: How New Zealand punctured 'Bazball' momentum

The two-match Test series opener between New Zealand and England is facing a lot of uncertainity. Before the series opener, Cyclone Gabrielle's threat is looming large whereas the home side have another reason to worry with fast-bowling all-rounder Kyle Jamieson benig a doubtful starter. Jamieson looks set to be ruled out of the Test series due to a relapse of the back problem, as per Stuff.co.nz, which kept him out of action from international cricket since June.

Apart from Jamieson, Matt Henry's avaliability is also a concern for Tim Southee & Co. The pacer remained at home in Christchurch on Monday night as he and wife Holly await the birth of their first child. With flights being cancelled left, right and centre amid the chaos due to Cyclone Gabrielle, it means Henry could be cutting it fine if the Test series opener, i.e. the pink ball match at Bay Oval, Tauranga, gets underway as per schedule on Thursday (February 16), subject to weather clearance.

New Zealand coach Gary Stead will provide more details on Tuesday (February 14) regarding his pace department, which currently comprises Southee, Neil Wagner and Blair Tickner.

"We've got a number of players that are still arriving here at the moment," New Zealand coach Gary Stead said as per a report in ESPNCricinfo. "So the cyclone that's happening at the top of the North Island has had a wee bit of an impact on travel for some people. It's disappointing the weather the way it is but there's a lot of people up at the top of the North Island who are a lot worse off than us," he added.

The uncertain weather conditions have meant that the Powhiri -- a Maori welcoming ceremony -- has also been cancelled, scheduled for February 14.

The uncertain weather conditions have meant that the Powhiri -- a Maori welcoming ceremony -- has also been cancelled, scheduled for February 14.

The third and final T20I between India and New Zealand ended in a tie after both sides ended with the same runs at DLS par score on Tuesday evening (November 22). This became only the third instance of a T20I being tied on DLS par score as Hardik Pandya & Co. were adjudged the winners of the bilateral series with a 1-0 scoreline. While the series opener was washed out entirely, India had beaten the Kiwis by 65 runs in the second and penultimate match.

Talking about the final T20I, in Napier, Tim Southee-led Kiwis opted to bat first. While Arshdeep Singh removed Finn Allen and Md Siraj dismissed Mark Chapman, Devon Conway's 59 and Glenn Phillips' 54 revived the NZ innings and they were set to get anything over 180. The last five overs saw the home side add only 31 runs and lose eight wickets as they were dismissed for a moderate 160 in 19.3 overs.

New Zealand demolished hosts and defending champions Australia by 89 runs in their opening game of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 to get off to a flying start in the tournament. The Kiwis produced an excellent all-round performance to outclass Australia in all three departments at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney to bring an end to their 11-year-long wait for a win in a white-ball game in Australia.

New Zealand rode on a stunning knock of an unbeaten 92 from opener Devon Conway and a bowling masterclass from Tim Southee to register a comprehensive win in their opening game of the showpiece event. Asked to bat first in the game, the Kiwis got off to a solid start as openers Fin Allen and Conway took the Aussie bowlers to the cleaners.

Allen went after the hosts from the word go as he scored a quickfire 42 off just 16 balls to add 56 runs for the first wicket with Conway before being cleaned up by Josh Hazlewood.

Conway took charge after Allen's departure and slammed seven fours and two sixes en route to his 58-ball 92. While he missed out on a well-deserved century, the left-hander's terrific knock helped New Zealand post a strong total of 200 runs on the board as the Aussie bowlers struggled for wickets.

Updated ICC World Test Championship points table after Ben Stokes' England whitewash New Zealand

England's gung-ho approach was on display on the final day of the three-match Test series versus New Zealand in the Headingley encounter. Resuming their 296-run chase on Day 5, on Monday (June 27), Ben Stokes-led hosts defeated Kiwis by seven wickets to inflict a series whitewash over the World Test champions.

Ending Day 4 at 183-2, England was oncourse for a 3-0 scoreline with a settled Joe Root and Ollie Pope in the middle. The duo got together with the score of 51 for 2 after NZ set up another challenging target in the series. The script remained the same for England as they recovered after a poor start and continued their relentless attack to find the gaps and keep the scoreboard ticking. Thus, the unbroken third-wicket stand was expected to guide hosts to a comfortable win.

After a delayed start to Day 5, due to rain, England lost Pope for 82. Despite losing the right-hander as he was nearing a triple-figure score, Root got Jonny Bairstow's company as the two found the gaps with ease and the runs kept flowing in at regular intervals. Bairstow (71 not out off 44 deliveries) slammed the second-fastest fifty by an Englishman in whites and Root remained unbeaten on 86 as England completed a whitewash.

Talking about the contest, Kiwis had opted to bat first and rode on Daryl Mitchell's third consecutive ton of the series to post 329. With England reduced to 55 for 6, the visitors fancied their chances of attaining a healthy lead but Bairstow's stroke-filled 162, off 157 balls, and all-rounder Craig Overton's 97 propelled the Three Lions to 360 all-out, leading by 31 runs.

Tom Latham's 76, captain Kane Williamson's 48, Mitchell's 56 and keeper-batter Tom Blundell's 88 helped NZ post 326 in their second essay, setting up a challenging 296-run target. Despite having a competitive total to defend, the Black Caps faltered yet again and failed to run through England's middle and lower order, as was the case in the opening two games.

Lack of runs from their top-order and having no answers to England's all-out approach with the bat resulted in Kiwis' downfall in each and every game, despite them being on top on various occasions. Stokes & Co. will now gear up for the rescheduled fifth and final Test versus India, in Edgbaston, which commences on July 01. The Brendon McCullum-Stokes pair will be eager to prevent India from winning the incomplete five-match series, where they have conceded an unassailable lead to Rohit Sharma & Co., and end it with a 2-2 scoreline.

After his impressive hundred took England to a 1-0 lead in the series opener, at Lord's, Root was at his best yet again when he came out to bat during the home side's first innings, in response to the Kiwis' 553 on Day 3 of the Trent Bridge encounter. Resuming Day 4 on 163, with England 473-5, Root smacked Tim Southee for a six with a stunning reverse sweep shot on Monday (June 13).

Here's the video of Root's stunner, which went over the slip cordon and beyond the boundary ropes:

While Root was expected to touch the 200-run mark on Day 4, he fell for a sublime 176 whereas Ben Foakes got dismissed for 56 as Trent Boult picked up a five-fer and ran through the English lower-order to dismiss the hosts for 539, enabling a vital 14-run lead for his side.

Eng vs NZ: Root smashes Southee for 6 with a stunning reverse-sweep on Day 4 of 2nd Test - WATCH

It was raining sixes and runs for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) after they opted to bat first versus the two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in match 66 of the IPL 2022 edition, on Wednesday evening (May 18), at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai.

Riding on South Africa's Quinton de Kock's mammoth 140 not out and captain KL Rahul's well-compiled 51-ball unbeaten 68, LSG put KKR on the back foot on a batting-friendly track to take the team total to 210-0 in 20 overs. While De Kock was the aggressor, scoring 71 runs alone since the start of the 16th over, with 10 fours and sixes each -- at a whopping strike rate of 200 -- Rahul played his part and also struck at 133.33

Courtesy De Kock-Rahul's brilliance, the duo also entered the record books by registering the highest-ever opening partnership in IPL history. The pair went past Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) former opening partners Jonny Bairstow-David Warner's 185-run stand versus Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2019.

This also became the first time a team has batted the entire 20 overs in IPL without losing a single wicket. Here are some other records achieved by the LSG openers and De Kock, in particular, who slammed his second IPL hundred:

At the mid-innings, LSG head coach Andy Flower told the broadcasters, "It's a helluva score, they batted beautifully. We've been seeing some special batting from both of them this season and again that was brilliant to watch. They are both beautiful batters to watch. At the end of the 18th over, we sent a message on saying, 'If you guys are too tired hitting the ball hard, you can retire and we'll send some of our big-hitters in." These boys, all of them, from 1 to 9 can hit the ball hard like that. One boundary is a big boundary, so Quinton hitting balls like that, who's not renowned for his big-hitting actually, that'd have given him a lot of satisfaction."

KKR need to chase down the total in 16.5 overs to bolster their NRR (and go past DC's NRR, i.e. +0.255) and also remain in the playoffs race. Meanwhile, LSG already have one foot in the playoffs and will like to win big to not only confirm a last-four berth but also help them to ensure a top-two finish eventually.

It has been a season of redemption for Umesh Yadav till now in the Indian Premier League. The India fast bowler was picked by Kolkata Knight Riders in the end stages of the mega auction and after playing just two games in last year’s tournament, he was not touted as a major threat.

However, the 34-year-old has performed brilliantly for KKR this season and with eight wickets to his name, he currently wears the purple cap as the leading wicket-taker in the competition. Umesh was the pick of the bowlers once again on Friday as he claimed four scalps against Punjab Kings.

That was not the only record that Umesh claimed on Friday as he currently has the most number of ‘Player of the Match’ awards a single opposition. The fast bowler won his sixth POTM against Punjab Kings and went past ex-KKR all-rounder Yusuf Pathan who had 5 against Deccan Chargers.

IPL 2022: Umesh Yadav breaks two impressive records with four-wicket haul against Punjab Kings

Umesh Yadav continued his dream run with a four-wicket haul before Andre Russell returned to his brutal best to fire Kolkata Knight Riders to an easy six-wicket win over Punjab Kings here on Friday.

Umesh (4/23), coming into the season with just two games over two IPL seasons and going unsold initially at the auction, produced career-best T20 figures to help KKR dismiss Punjab for a below par 137 in 18.2 overs.

It was supposed to be a straight forward chase but Rahul Chahar raised Punjab's hopes with a double wicket maiden to reduced KKR to 51 for four.

However, Russell (70 not out off 31 balls) came out in the middle and changed the game with his barrage of sixes, eight in total, to make it a cakewalk in just 14.3 overs.

He smashed three sixes off Odean Smith in an over that went for 30 runs. No rope is long enough when Russell is going all guns blazing and he was in that kind of zone on Friday night.

The Jamaican dasher fittingly ended the game with a couple of sixes off Liam Livingtsone's friendly leg-breaks. It was KKR's second win in three games while Punjab suffered their first loss of the season after the win over RCB.

Earlier, KKR bowlers stifled a power-laden Punjab Kings batting line-up. With heavy dew setting in later half of the games, fielding first has become a no-brainer this IPL and KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer called it right at the toss.

Punjab, which had successfully chased 200 plus in their opening game, enjoyed a good powerplay that yielded 62 for 3 in six overs. Veteran pacer Umesh, who has been proving his critics wrong this season., once again provided the breakthrough early in the game, removing opposition skipper Mayank Agarwal, who was found plumb in front after missing a rather straight and full delivery in the first over of the match.

Sri Lankan Bhanuka Rajapaksa (31 off 9) who had produced a match-winning knock in the first game, looked in sensational touch at the Wankhede Stadium.

In his brief stay in the middle, the top-order batter hammered three fours and as many sixes, mostly towards the mid-wicket region, leaving the spectators in awe. His breathtaking effort was perhaps the lone bright in an otherwise underwhelming innings. Iyer impressed with his leadership.

He brought back Umesh in the middle overs to ensure there was no fightback from Punjab. He also employed a slip in the 15th over and was rewarded for that with the wicket of Rahul Chahar.

His new ball partner Tim Southee and KKR's retained spinners Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine were also too good for the Punjab batters. Livingstone (19 off 16) could convert his start while India U-19 star Raj Angad Bawa found the going tough for the second game in a row. Kagisa Rabada (25 off 16), playing his first game of the seasons, saved Punjab the blushes by getting much needed boundaries to take the total close to 140.

IPL 2022: Umesh Yadav, Andre Russell guide Kolkata Knight Riders to victory over Punjab Kings

New Zealand pacer Tim Southee pulled off a sensational catch to dismiss Kagiso Rabada during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings on Friday.

Rabada looked quite dangerous as he slammed two boundaries off Southee in the 17th over and then followed it up with two more fours and a six off Shivam Mavi. However, the South Africa fast bowler miscued a delivery from Andre Russell in the 19th over and the ball ballooned up in the sky.

Southee, who was positioned at the long-off boundary, ran a good amount of distance and pulled off a full-length dive to end Rabada’s innings. This was the second brilliant effort in the field for Southee in the match as he had earlier dismissed Liam Livingstone with a catch at the edge of the boundary.

With the ball, Southee became the first New Zealand cricketer ever to take 250 wickets in T20 cricket as he dismissed Shahrukh Khan for a duck. Thanks to his three-wicket haul, he stretched his lead over compatriot Trent Boult (178) even more and he achieved the feat on his 217th match.

ICC Men's Player of the Month Nominees for November:

Abid Ali (Pakistan)

Pakistan opener Abid Ali was named Player of the Match in the opening match of their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) series against Bangladesh in Chittagong, with runs of 133 and 91. He was instrumental in establishing the groundwork for an eight-wicket victory, courtesy successive-century opening partnerships with partner Abdullah Shafique.

Tim Southee (New Zealand)

Tim Southee got eight wickets in the first Test against India in Kanpur, shortly after succeeding in the shortest format. In November, he took seven wickets in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup and assisted his team to the final in Dubai. He grabbed three additional T20I wickets against India at Ranchi between these two landmarks.

David Warner (Australia)

David Warner, Tim Southee, and Abid Ali nominated for ICC Player of the Month award for November

Tim Southee bowled an incisive morning spell to take five wickets which was then brilliantly complemented by openers Will Young and Tom Latham as New Zealand dominated India to reach 129 for no loss on the second day of the opening Test here on Friday.

The only highlight for India in an otherwise disappointing day was Shreyas Iyer's (105 off 171 balls) debut hundred. Playing his 80th Test match, Southee (5/69) took his 13th five-wicket haul on an unresponsive track to send India packing for 345 after they started the day at 258 for 4.

Young then held centre-stage in his fourth Test appearance as he looked composed and unperturbed during his unbeaten knock of 75 off 180 balls. Latham (50 batting off 165 balls), the seasoned campaigner, survived three on-field decisions (two leg before and one caught behind), negated by DRS, and decided to frustrate the two Indian spinners with a gritty defensive game.

The Green Park track became better for batting on the second day and the turn that was on offer was minimal. The variable bounce wasn't also there for the better part of the 57 overs that they batted. Since it was slow turn, the Black Caps duo mostly plonked their front-foot and neutralised the turn. And when they played on the back-foot, there was enough time to manoeuvre on both sides of the wicket.

Both were able to adjust on the back-foot against Ravindra Jadeja (14-4-28-0) and Ravichandran Ashwin (17-5-38-0), both of whom didn't look threatening on the day.

Also what made it worse for India was that hardly any delivery kept dangerously low, which could have brought the leg-before into the equation.

The most disappointing of all was Axar Patel (10-1-26-0), whose accuracy on the leg stump line was of little or no value and it was once again proved that without assistance from the track, he is not even half the bowler that he is with some help from surface.

Young, in particular, got as many as 12 boundaries while Latham helped himself to four hits to the fence. While Indian spinners can come back on the third day if the pitch considerably deteriorates but New Zealand would like to take the game deep by getting somewhere close to India's first innings total and take it from there.

In the morning, Iyer became the 16th Indian cricketer to score a hundred on Test debut but the home side's lower-middle order caved in meekly save Ashwin (38 off 56 balls), whose counter-attacking effort took them close to 350.

The credit for that went primarily to Southee (27.4-6-69-5), who was tirelessly bowling an extended spell of more than 10 overs from one end, causing extensive damage. The seasoned campaigner's 13th five-wicket haul came in his 80th Test.

Resuming on his overnight score of 75, Iyer followed the great Gundappa Vishwanath in reaching the milestone at this ground. Ashwin did the bulk of scoring in the morning session as India added only 87 runs, losing six wickets in the process.

Southee was on target with the second new ball first up as he sent back Ravindra Jadeja (50) on his overnight score. He used the width of the crease cleverly to trouble Jadeja and got the ball to move from length which was too much for the lower-order players to negotiate.

Wriddhiman Saha and Axar Patel nicked at those deliveries that moved away at drivable lengths. Sensing that he is now batting with the tail as Saha (1 off 12 balls) is no longer a batter on whom one can repose his faith, Iyer hit a flurry of boundaries but the best shot was a cover drive off Kyle Jamieson (22.2-6-85-3) which took him to 96.

A glide towards wide of third man off Jamieson got him a double and the moment that every batter dreams of. His century in India whites which would definitely increase the pressure on his captain for the game, Ajinkya Rahane.

Iyer's innings had 13 fours and two sixes which showed that he was always looking at ways to score runs rather than merely surviving. He was finally out for 105 when he tried to drive a slower one from Southee but it landed straight in the hands of the cover fielder.

IND vs NZ, 3rd T20I live streaming: When and where to watch India vs New Zealand match live online?

New Zealand stand-in skipper Tim Southee said the Kiwis are looking to finish the T20I series against India on a high when the two sides meet in the dead rubber on Sunday. India sealed the series with a 2-0 lead after registering a thumping seven-wicket win over New Zealand on Friday.

After the defeat, Southee pointed out towards "hectic schedule" which has seen the Kiwis playing India in the T20Is just three days after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup.

"It`s been a hectic schedule, not only this (India T20Is) but obviously on the back of the World Cup. But the guys have got one last push, a number of guys go home after this next game, so hopefully, we can finish the tour on a high," said Southee in the post-match press conference.

"It`s another opportunity to represent your country, so I don`t think you need any extra motivation to get yourself up. It`s a great place to play cricket, coming here today in front of a full house. I`m sure the guys will be up to finish the tour on high," he added.

India lost three wickets during the chase and all were picked by Southee who returned with figures of 3-16 in his quota of four overs. "I was just trying to replicate how the Indian bowlers bowled but it was tough for our spinners to get a good grip on the ball. India were just too good tonight," said Southee.

The New Zealand stand-in skipper negated the toss factor but admitted that dew played a role in the second T20I and will be there in the last game as well.

"We knew the dew will going to be a factor and it will be there in the next game as well. So we have to try and adapt to the conditions. Dew played a role for both sides, it was there in the first innings but it may have gone a little worse in the second innings. So winning the toss was not a crucial factor today (Friday)," he signed off.

Been a hectic schedule but looking to finish India series on a high, says NZ skipper Tim Southee

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson will skip the three-game Twenty20 series against India this week to prepare for the test series that starts this month, the team said on Tuesday.

The first T20 game will be played on Wednesday in Jaipur, India, three days after New Zealand`s World Cup final loss on Sunday. New Zealand said it has decided to allow Williamson to prepare for the two red-ball matches with the test squad.

Tim Southee will captain the T20 side. Southee and teammates Kyle Jamieson, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips and Mitchell Santner are set to join the Test squad when the series begins in Kanpur on Nov. 25.

The second test starts in Mumbai on Dec. 3. India will have big names missing for the test series but New Zealand coach Gary Stead believes the hosts will still provide a major challenge.

Indian captain Virat Kohli has decided to skip the first of the two tests, while batter Rohit Sharma, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami will miss the series.

"They`re still very, very strong," Stead said from Dubai after the Twenty20 World Cup final.

"When you go to India you traditionally think of spin-friendly wickets and I still see (Ravindra) Jadeja, (Ravichandran) Ashwin and Axar Patel in their lineup.

"They are obviously guys that have performed really, really well for them in the past three or four years."

New Zealand will be looking to rebound from their loss to Australia https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-cricket-t20worldcup-nzl-aus-idCAKBN2HZ0GS in the World Cup final but their squad will also be without a few familiar faces.

Seamer Trent Boult and all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme opted out of the tour because of the prospect of spending more time in bio-secure bubbles, while batsman Devon Conway broke his hand at the World Cup.

Test regulars such as Ross Taylor, Tom Latham and Neil Wagner will, however, return to the fold as the Black Caps seek a first series triumph in India.

"We know it`s going to be a big challenge there," Stead added. "(But) we have some new guys, who will be nice and fresh, and maybe add a different dynamic to the squad."

The series will include the first meeting between the countries in the longest format since New Zealand beat India to win the inaugural World Test Championship in June.

"It`s our first chance ... to get out there and look at how we go about getting into the final again and defending what we won six or seven months ago," Stead said.

Kane Williamson to skip upcoming T20I series against India, Tim Southee to lead the Kiwis

R Ashwin had a heated exchange with Eoin Morgan and Tim Southee during match 41 of the IPL 2021 edition between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Sharjah on Tuesday (September 28). The incident happened during DC's innings when a Rahul Tripathi throw ricocheted off Pant and the wily off-spinner Ashwin went for another run in the process.

Thus, this didn't please Morgan and Southee as the two had a verbal spat with Ashwin following the spin-bowling all-rounder's dismissal. Even Pant joined in to defend his teammate before former KKR captain Dinesh Karthik came in the middle and tried to play the peace-maker. As the matter has once again led to talks regarding the 'Spirit of Cricket', Ashwin finally opened up on the whole controversy in a series of tweets on Thursday (September 30). Here's what the DC spinner wrote:

IPL 2021: DC spinner R Ashwin opens up on heated altercation with KKR stars Eoin Morgan, Tim Southee

Delhi Capitals (DC) spinner R Ashwin was involved in a heated argument with Eoin Morgan and Tim Southee during his side's clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2021 on Tuesday. Ashwin was dismissed by Southee in the final over of DC's innings following which he was seen exchanging a few words with Southee and Morgan.

The incident took place after the first ball of the 20th over of DC's innings when Ashwin tried to play a pull shot against Southee. The spinner ended up getting caught by Nitish Rana on 9 off 8 balls. As Ashwin was walking back to the dressing room, Southee hurled a few words at him before things got heated up between the duo.

KKR captain Morgan also got involved in the verbal tussle as Ashwin exchanged a few words with the England batsman as well before KKR wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik intervened. Karthik was seen calming Ashwin down and asking him to walk back. It remains unclear what prompted the heated exchange between Southee and the DC spinner. However, the video of the face-off soon went viral on social media.

Talking about the game, Delhi Capitals suffered their first defeat of the UAE leg of IPL 2021 as they failed to defend the low-key total of 127 runs after a disappointing batting performance. DC got off to a slow start with openers Steve Smith (39) and Shikhar Dhawan (24) adding 35 runs for the first wicket before the middle-order suffered an unexpected collapse.

Captain Rishabh Pant top-scored with 39 off 36 balls for his side and helped them post a decent total on the board. It proved to be a tricky chase for KKR with their middle-order also crumbling under pressure but Nitish Rana's unbeaten 36 and crucial knocks from Sunil Narine (21) and Shubman Gill (30) helped KKR win by 3 wickets with 10 balls to spare.

The second and final leg of IPL 2021 is set to kickoff from September 19, in the UAE. The first phase of IPL 14 saw only 29 games being possible before the second wave of the novel coronavirus, in India, led to the tournament's indefinite postponement in early May.

Ahead of the final leg's commencement, there are a number of changes for many franchises in their respective squads. A plethora of players have opted out for various reasons, due to injury, unavailability for national duties, etc., and their replacements have been named. The likes of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) have named some replacement players and will bank on them to go the distance in the second-half of IPL 14.

Among them, the addition of the No. 1 T20I bowler Shamsi, England's ace spinner Adil Rashid and New Zealand's veteran speedster Tim Southee have made the maximum noise. On the other hand, it will be interesting to see how the likes of Wanindu Hasaranga, Dushmantha Chameera, Glenn Phillips, etc. add to their respective team's strength in the remaining 31 games in IPL 14.

At the time of the tournament's indefinite postponement, Delhi Capitals (DC), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), RCB along with the defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) occupied the top four spots, respectively. It will be interesting to see if the bottom-ranked sides start afresh and fight hard in the remaining fixtures.

CSK and MI will lock horns on September 19, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai, to resume IPL 14.

Adil Rashid, Tim Southee to Wanindu Hasaranga: List of all new additions for IPL 2021's final leg in UAE
