The makers unveiled the first look of the upcoming season 5, which is set in the 1990s, a time when the British royal family was widely covered and followed thanks to the growing media and paparazzi culture. It was also the time when Princess Diana and Prince Charles' marriage fell apart while their two sons were growing up.&nbsp; 
 
With the new decade in its stride, the Royal Family are presented with possibly their biggest challenge to date; as the public openly questions their role in ‘90s Britain.

&nbsp;This turbulent decade for the Royal Family has been well documented and interpreted by journalists, biographers and historians. As Elizabeth Debicki, who takes on the role of Princess Diana, said in a statement, “That's the amazing thing about playing these people at this time because, in the journey of The Crown so far out of all the seasons, this is the most visual content we have of the Royal Family. In the ‘90s everything had started to be filmed and also it was the birth of the 24-hour news cycle so there's just this incredible amount of content that we have access to.”

According to his 2004 statement to the Metropolitan Police, which was submitted in 2008 while investigation into Princess Diana’s death continued, stated that he was in a relationship with her from 1995-1997 and that she broke up with him after she met Dodi Fayed at a holiday with Mohammed Al Fayed and his family.

In the statement, Dr Khan said that he had considered a life with Princess Diana, but the situation with the press was too much for him. Leading streamer Netflix has utterly transformed the TV landscape since creating its first original show in 2012, but surprisingly has never won a top series prize at television's equivalent of the Oscars -- best drama, best comedy, or best limited series.

"'The Crown' does feel like it finally has come to the moment where it's going to have its moment," Variety awards editor Clayton Davis told AFP. "It's going to be the first big series win for Netflix."

Indeed, the show captured both prizes for actors in supporting roles, including one for Gillian Anderson for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher. It also took awards for best writing and directing.

As well as "The Crown" -- which in its fourth season depicts the ill-fated marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana -- the streaming giant is banking on the wildly popular "The Queen's Gambit."

Starring Anya Taylor-Joy as a gifted but troubled chess prodigy, that show sent chessboard sales skyrocketing worldwide, and is the favorite to win top honors in the fiercely competitive limited series section -- for shows ending after one season.

But Apple TV+ global smash hit "Ted Lasso" claimed the night's first two awards in comedy for supporting actress Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein.

The show about an out-of-his-depth American football coach handed control of an English soccer team is expected to score across the comedy categories, including for star Jason Sudeikis.

- 'Fun, ritzy party' -

Last year's ceremony -- held before coronavirus vaccines were available -- was a mainly virtual affair.

This time a strict guest list of 500-odd nominees gathered under strict pandemic precautions including proof of inoculation, with producers promising a "fun, ritzy party" for those who clear security.&nbsp;

The show opened with rappers LL Cool J and Lil Dicky and actress Rita Wilson leading the celebrities in a singalong of late rapper Biz Markie's "Just A Friend," riffing on the year's nominated television shows.&nbsp;

But following the musical number, actor Seth Rogen nodded to the circumstances, joking that "there are way too many of us in this little room."

"Why is there a roof? It's more important that we have three chandeliers than that we make sure we don't kill Eugene Levy tonight," he added.

In a change to the usual running order, the increasingly prestigious best limited series award will end Sunday's ceremony.

Quirky sitcom-inspired Marvel superhero show "WandaVision" -- up for the prize in that category -- on Disney+ has exceeded all critical expectations.

But it lost out on the limited series supporting actress award to Julianne Nicholson in "Mare of Easttown." The small-town detective drama starring Kate Winslet also earned supporting actor honors for Evan Peters.

The category also features "The Queen's Gambit," British break-out series "I May Destroy You," which examines the aftermath of a rape, and Barry Jenkins' slavery adaptation "The Underground Railroad."

Netflix drama 'The Crown' dominated the nomination list of Emmy Awards on Tuesday night. Along with 'The Crown', 'The Mandalorian' dominated the Tuesday's list for the awards which is considered the highest honor in television.

Best drama series contenders include Netflix`s British royal series 'The Crown' for a season that focused on the early years of the disastrous marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. 'The Crown' nabbed 24 nods, including nine for actors such as Josh O`Connor and newcomer Emma Corrin as the royal newlyweds and Olivia Colman as a middle-aged Queen Elizabeth. British 19th-century romance 'Bridgerton' won a best drama series nomination as well as an acting nomination for breakout star Regé-Jean Page. 'Pos' star Mj Rodriguez became the first transgender performer to pick up a major Emmy acting nomination in the drama series about the LGBTQ underground ballroom scene. 'Star War' spinoff drama 'The Mandalorian' tied with 24 nominations, mostly for writing and special effects. Other nominations went to innovative superhero dramedy 'WandaVision,' which got 23 nominations, including for stars Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen, chess drama 'The Queen`s Gambit' and harrowing slavery tale 'The Underground Railroad.' In the documentary race, 'Framing Britney Spears' about the pop singer`s career and long-running conservatorship battle, picked up a nod. The coronavirus pandemic disrupted production of TV shows, meaning some, including last year`s drama series winner "Succession," did not return in time for Emmy consideration. Season 5 of The Crown will begin shooting next month with a complete new cast. Imelda Staunton plays Queen Elizabeth, Lesley Manville is Princess Margaret, Jonathan Pryce will play the role of Prince Philip, and Elizabeth Debicki features as Princess Diana.

In conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor who played a younger version of the now-72-year-old British royal on season four of historical fiction drama said, "I suppose I do feel defensive in a certain way, I guess,” said the actor.

He went on to reveal that he doesn’t keep himself updated about the happenings of the royal family and had not even watched the infamous Oprah Winfrey interview of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. 
 
“In terms of my experiences with the Royal Family, I’m the worst person to talk about the Royals. I have no idea about anything to do with the Royal Family,” he said. 
 
"So any conversation about, 'Gee, what did you think about what Charles said last week?' I'm like, 'Guys, I have no idea," he admitted. 
 
Previously, he opened up about how he had&nbsp;very little interest in the British royal family, "I find it really hard pinning the real royal family to 'The Crown.' They feel so far removed," he told GQ's Stuart McGurk back in March. "Basically I had no interest in the royal family before I did 'The Crown.' And I have very little interest now." 
 
All four seasons of 'The Crown' are available to stream on Netflix.
