Prices for its popular standard plan, which allows streaming on two devices at the same time, will be increased to $12.99 per month from $10.99, the company said in a statement.

Netflix shares rose 6.5 percent to $354.56 in afternoon trading, adding to their 30 percent rise so far this year.

The company' s top-tier plan, which allows streaming on four screens in high definition, will be raised to $15.99 from $13.99 per month, while the fee for its basic plan will rise to $8.99 from $7.99.

 
In comparison, Time Warner Inc's HBO Now streaming service charges $14.99 per month, while Hulu's no-advertisements plan is priced at $11.99 per month. 
"It highlights that Netflix has pricing power and even after the increase it remains a very cheap entertainment alternative," Pivotal Research Group analyst Jeff Wlodarczak said.

Netflix has been pouring money to bolster its original content, which boasts award-winning shows such as 'The Crown', 'Black Mirror' and 'Wild Wild Country', to fend off intensifying competition from players such as Amazon.com' s Prime Video service and Hulu.

The price hikes are expected to fetch Netflix hundreds of millions of dollars, ahead of the launch of streaming services from AT&amp;T and Walt Disney.

While aggressive spending - a planned $8 billion in 2018 - has led to a surge in subscriber growth, its debt doubled to $6.50 billion in 2017 from $3.36 billion in 2016.

The company is expected to have a debt level of $8.33 billion in 2018, according to Daniel Morgan, senior portfolio manager at Synovus Trust Co, which owns 15,019 shares of Netflix.

Netflix is scheduled to report its fourth-quarter results after market close on Thursday.

"With Netflix frequently tapping the debt markets on several recent occasions, the price hike could help ease concerns with a growing deficit on free cash flow to fund a likely continued escalation in Netflix`s content spending, which likely topped $13 billion in 2018," CFRA analyst Tuna Amobi said.

Netflix raises prices for US subscribers

The Crown got three nominations (Best Drama, Leading actress for Claire Foy and Supporting Actress for Vanessa Kirby) out of which Kirby took home the coveted prize. Claire Foy again missed out in the lead actress category as Molly Windsor won for her performance in Three Girls. Last year, the drama series picked up five nominations but was snubbed on the big night.&nbsp;

Netflix’s anthology series Black Mirror also got three nominations, equalling to police drama Line of Duty and miniseries Three Girls, both from the BBC.

Comedian and presenter Sue Perkins hosted the event and poked fun at The Crown’s gender pay dispute. “I don’t want to ignore the elephant in the room but on such an occasion I think it would be crass to discuss my fee,” she said. “But let me say I’ll just be putting in half the effort.”

According to a report published in a leading UK-based daily, Claire would get about $274,000 (£200,000) in back pay. Both the producers on the show, Suzanne Mackie and Andy Harries, brought up the topic of wage gap during a conference in Jerusalem earlier this year. The duo claimed that Matt earned more money because of his stint on the BBC series Doctor Who.

When this was revealed, Claire who went on to win a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for her role on the show commented: “I’m surprised because I’m at the centre of it, and anything that I’m at the centre of like that is very, very odd, and feels very, very out of ordinary. “But I’m not [surprised about the interest in the story] in the sense that it was a female-led drama. I’m not surprised that people saw the story and went, ‘Oh that’s a bit odd’. But I know that Matt feels the same that I do, that it’s odd to find yourself at the centre [of a story] that you didn’t particularly ask for.”

Meanwhile, Matt told a website that he totally believed in him and Claire being paid equally. He said, “Claire is one of my best friends, and I believe that we should be paid equally and fairly and there should be equality for all. I support her completely, and I’m pleased that it was resolved and they made amends for it because of that what’s needed to happen.”

He added, “ Going forward, I think we should all bear in mind that we need to strive to make this better and a more even playing field for everyone involved – but not just in our industry, in all industries.”

The Crown’s production company, Left Bank Pictures has now confirmed that it will pay Olivia Colman, who will take over the role of The Queen in the third season of the show, the same wage as the show’s new Prince Philip, <a href="http://cmsuat.wionews.com/world/entertainment-actor-tobias-menzies-roped-in-to-play-prince-philip-in-netflixs-the-crown--126995">Tobias Menzies</a>.

'The Crown' gender pay gap controversy: Lead actress Claire Foy to get £200,000 in back pay

Anupam Kher has secured a nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category at the British Academy Television Awards 2018 for his role in the drama "The Boy with the Topknot". 
 
The show, which aired on BBC Two in 2017, is based on a critically acclaimed memoir of the same name by journalist Sathnam Sanghera. 
 
Also starring Sacha Dhawan and Deepti Naval, it follows a boy growing up in Wolverhampton to traditional Punjabi parents. Kher and Naval play the parents of the protagonist. 
 
Other fellow nominees in the Best Supporting Actor category are Adrian Dunbar for 'Line of Duty', Brian F O'Byrne for 'Little Boy Blue' and Jimmi Simpson for 'USS Callister' episode of Netflix's 'Black Mirror'.

 
Kher, who has appeared in a number of international projects such as 'The Big Sick', 'Silver Linings Playbook', 'Sense8' and others, took to Twitter to express his happiness.

'The Crown', 'Line of Duty' and 'Black Mirror' secured the most nominations

Anupam Kher has secured a nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category at the British Academy Television Awards 2018 for his role in the drama "The Boy with the Topknot". The show, which aired on BBC Two in 2017, is based on a critically acclaimed memoir of the same name by journalist Sathnam Sanghera. Also starring Sacha Dhawan and Deepti Naval, it follows a boy growing up in Wolverhampton to traditional Punjabi parents. Kher and Naval play the parents of the protagonist. Apple has hired two long-time Sony Pictures Television executives to expand the iPhone maker&#39;s push into original television programming, plunging deeper into a field crowded by Hollywood studios and online streaming services.

Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, responsible for hit shows such as Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and The Crown, will join Apple in newly created positions to oversee all aspects of video programming, the technology company said in a statement.

&quot;Jamie and Zack are two of the most talented TV executives in the world and have been instrumental in making this the golden age of television,&quot; said Eddy Cue, Apple&#39;s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services.

&quot;There is much more to come,&quot; Cue said of Apple&#39;s video effort.

The new hires demonstrate a serious commitment by another deep-pocketed technology company to produce quality television shows. Erlicht and Van Amburg have served as senior Sony television executives since 2005.

But Apple did not elaborate on its strategy, leaving investors guessing how many shows it plans to distribute, how much it will spend and where the programming will be available.

The company is playing in an increasingly competitive field. Amazon.com and Netflix have invested billions of dollars in award-winning comedies and dramas featuring A-list Hollywood stars. And social media company Facebook has signed deals with millennial-focused news and entertainment creators, including Vox and BuzzFeed, to make shows for its upcoming video service.

Apple began its move last week with reality programme Planet of the Apps, an unscripted show about developers competing for venture capital funding. The series is available only to subscribers to Apple Music, a $10-a-month streaming service.

&quot;These companies do not need to make money off video because they can make money other ways,&quot; Greenfield said. &quot;And they are going to have tons of data on their viewers.&quot;

It is more cost-effective for Apple to pay for original content and secure licensing deals on its own than to buy a content company, said Moody&rsquo;s analyst Gerald Granovsky.

&quot;From a credit perspective, we&rsquo;d much rather see Apple overpay to deliver original content than pay $50 billion to buy Netflix and basically compete for the same content,&quot; he said. &quot;They&rsquo;ll definitely get a better bang for their buck by focusing on their Apple TV product.&quot;
