Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has sparked a political controversy with remarks contrasting the religious and political identities of northern and southern India. Speaking at a media event in New Delhi on Monday, Reddy questioned the BJP’s repeated use of the slogan ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and asked why Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders do not similarly chant ‘Har Har Mahadev’. "We are Dravidians; they are Aryans. We are devotees of Lord Shiva, while they are devotees of Lord Ram," Reddy said. Reddy described Lord Shiva as the “God of the poor” and Lord Ram as the “God of the rich”, while also acknowledging that both deities are revered by devotees. His comments came while he was making an argument about broader political and cultural differences between northern and southern India. The Telangana chief minister also raised concerns over the proposed Lok Sabha delimitation exercise, arguing that an increase in parliamentary seats based primarily on population could affect the political representation and influence of southern states. Also Read: Pope Leo XIV denies sex abuse 'systemic' in the Church, backs AI concerns says fears aren’t ‘fake news’

The remarks drew a strong response from BJP leader and Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who accused Reddy of attempting to create divisions between devotees of Lord Shiva and Lord Ram. Kumar pointed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s association with the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and cited Modi’s visit to Vemulawada while responding to Reddy’s claim about BJP leaders and Lord Shiva. "Revanth Reddy who earlier said Muslim is 'Congress, Congress is Muslim' is now drawing political boundaries between Lord Ram and Lord Shiva. Kumar alleged that the Congress was using religious and regional identities for political mobilisation and urged Reddy not to portray Hindu traditions as divided along geographical or social lines. The exchange comes amid a wider political debate over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the representation of southern states in Parliament. Reddy and other Congress leaders have raised concerns about the potential political implications of delimitation and called for greater representation for southern states, particularly in the context of population-based seat allocation.

A Hyderabad consumer commission has fined a cineplex Rs 75,000 after discovering that the theatre's commercial advertisements and promotional content delayed the start of a movie by around 22 minutes. The case goes back to June 20, 2025, when a man purchased tickets for Kuberaa, the film starring Dhanush and Nagarjuna. The 33-year-old man claimed that he had booked two tickets for the 10:35 pm show, and he and his friend were seated around 10:30 pm. According to the complaint, however, advertisements and trailers continued to play until roughly 10:52 pm. He told the commission that the delay disrupted his plans and left him reaching home at 3 am, around an hour later than he had expected. He argued that this amounted to a deficiency in service. More than a year later, on September 11, 2026, the Hyderabad District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission issued its final order, siding with the complainant and ruling the theatre's conduct an unfair trade practice, according to a report in the Indian Express. Also read: Bollywood in focus as Income Tax searches 12 Mumbai locations linked to Rakul Preet, Vashu Bhagnani
Theatres' commercial benefit
The commission cited government guidelines on screening public service awareness films, which cap such approved films at two minutes. At the hearing, the theatre company contended that advertisements, public service announcements and trailers were a normal part of its business, and that public service content served a broader public interest. Telangana opposition slammed Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy after he expressed concern over engineering graduates’ employability on Thursday, describing them as a “criminal waste”. His remarks drew sharp criticism from the opposition BRS and the BJP. Addressing an event on Thursday, the CM stated that he sees education and skill development as the two eyes, expressing concern over the employability of engineering graduates. Pointing out that the state produces 1.10 lakh engineering graduates each year, he noted that many struggle to draft even a basic job application. “You (teachers) give a plain paper to them (engineering graduates) and tell them to write a job application. Criminal waste. He won’t apply for a small job because he studied engineering. He does not learn skills,” Reddy said. Also read: Greatest heist? Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has proposed a major electoral reform by seeking to lower the minimum age for contesting Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections from 25 years to 21 years. The Chief Minister has also proposed reducing the eligibility age for contesting Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections from 30 years to 25 years. Telangana is expected to convene a special Assembly session in early August to pass a resolution urging the Centre to amend the relevant laws. Linking the proposal to the recent NEET paper leak protests, Revanth Reddy said India's youth deserve greater representation in politics and governance. He questioned why 21-year-olds, who are eligible to become IAS, IPS, and IFS officers and contest local body elections, cannot contest parliamentary or assembly elections.

Telangana Fire and Disaster Response Director General Vikram Singh Mann on Sunday said all five bodies of those trapped in the Nampally furniture godown fire have been recovered and termed the incident a "clear case of criminal negligence," adding that legal action will be initiated as per the law. "As we were informed yesterday, five people were trapped. So we have recovered all five bodies. The first body was recovered this morning at around 9:15, and just now, the fifth body has also been recovered. All the bodies have been sent to Osmania Hospital," Mann said. Explaining the circumstances that led to the tragedy, the DG Mann said the victims were workers who had been provided accommodation in the building's basement. "They were working here and were given accommodation in the basement. So two of them were trying to rescue the others. But unfortunately, they also got trapped. This basement is only meant for parking vehicles," he said. Mann said the rescue and firefighting operations were delayed as the basement was packed with highly flammable material. "One of the reasons why it took us so much time to clear the area, extinguish the fire and recover the bodies is that this entire basement was filled with all kinds of materials. It was highly flammable. Despite all this, by using maximum resources and equipment, we managed to extinguish the fire and bring these people out," he said. Calling the incident serious, Mann said, "This is definitely a clear case of negligence. This is actually criminal negligence. And now, as per the law, legal action will be taken." Meanwhile, Telangana Minister Ponnam Prabhakar expressed shock and grief over the incident and condoled the deaths. He said the matter has been brought to the notice of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and assured support to the affected families. Prabhakar directed the police to register criminal cases against the shop owner for violating fire safety norms. He also instructed officials from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), police, revenue department and HYDRA to coordinate and take steps to prevent such incidents in the future. Appealing to the public, the Minister urged citizens to report buildings that do not comply with fire safety regulations. The fire broke out at a furniture godown on Nampally Station Road on Saturday evening. Firefighting and rescue operations continued through the night, involving teams from various departments. Earlier, one trapped individual was rescued safely.
