Virat Kohli's captaincy has been the talk of the town in the cricketing fraternity for quite some time. Under him, India remains a potent force across formats and have excelled in bilateral series. While they have also performed well in ICC events, the 32-year-old hasn't led India to a major title ever since he took over as the full-time captain in early 2017.

Nonetheless, Kohli's captaincy has been under the scanner following India's ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final loss to New Zealand, in mid-2021. While India came back strongly in the preceding England Tests, with a 2-1 unassailable lead in the five Tests before the series came to an abrupt end, there are reports doing the rounds that some senior Indian cricketers have complained about Kohli to the BCCI.

As of now, nothing concrete has emerged out. A report in the New Indian Express mentions that Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara reportedly called up the BCCI secretary Jay Shah following Kohli's post-match comments after the WTC final loss. Back then, Kohli had stated, "If you don't put their bowlers under pressure then they have the fitness and the consistency to bowl long spells and keep bowling all day in the same areas and trouble you, and the more momentum you give them, then invariably they get the breakthroughs they want. The mindset has to be to score runs and find ways to score runs. You can't be too worried about getting out because you are [then] bringing the bowler into the game completely."

In the WTC final, India had fell like nine pins in their second essay -- with Pujara and Rahane perishing for 15 apiece. Hence, it might be the case that Kohli's comments didn't go down well with the two Test specialists. Another Test specialist R Ashwin's name has also cropped up in this matter. As per a report in News18, it is the wily off-spinner who reportedly had a call with the BCCI secretary over Kohli's attitude.

Again, these are all speculations at the moment. However if it turns out to be true, Kohli might also lose out on Test captaincy whereas his ODI leadership skills will be scrutinised after India's performance in the forthcoming T20 World Cup, which will be the superstar cricketer's last assignment as the captain in the shortest format.

Rohit Sharma vows to guide Virat Kohli-led India to T20 WC glory while recalling MS Dhoni & Co.'s success in 2007

Ravi Shastri has hinted at not extending his tenure as Team India's head coach post the 2021 T20 World Cup, in the UAE. Among the various names that are doing the rounds as to who will replace Shastri, former Indian captain-cum-coach Anil Kumble's name has also cropped up once again.

For the unversed, Kumble was replaced by Shastri following the former Indian spinner's fallout with Virat Kohli in mid-2017. However, as per a report, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) coach isn't keen on reclaiming the top job in Indian cricket.

A highly-placed source was quoted as saying by IANS, "Well, neither Anil Kumble wants to return, nor the BCCI officials, other than president Sourav Ganguly, are too interested in him. The Board is looking for a foreign coach now. Kumble knows that he will have to face the same old team members (Virat Kohli and others in the team), nothing new, then why would he return? And moreover, Dada (Ganguly) has recommended his name, but other officials expressed their disagreement on it."

"VVS Laxman also will not be able to get the post. However, there’s still a month left, so let’s see what comes or some change of minds!
Indian national selectors left many surprised when they announced the 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, to be held in the UAE from October 17. While many regular members were included in the Virat Kohli-led squad, some notable omissions were Shikhar Dhawan, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, etc.

Chahal remains India's highest wicket-taker in the shortest format (63 scalps), however, he missed out and wasn't even named in the standby list owing to his indifferent or scratchy form in recent times. However, many were surprised that the selectors and team management preferred Axar Patel over him whereas Mumbai Indians' (MI) Rahul Chahar also got the nod, having played only 5 games for the Men in Blue.

The reason that the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee gave for preferring Chahar over Chahal was the difference in pace among the two bowlers. "Yuzvendra Chahal’s name was discussed. But we picked Rahul Chahar over Yuzi as we wanted someone who bowls fast and gets pace off the pitch. He also gets the ball to grip through the surface," Sharma was quoted as saying.

For the unversed, Rohit has been super busy ever since cricket resumed post the Covid-19 break in early 2020. Since then, he led MI to the IPL 2020 championship, played the final two Tests versus Australia Down Under, was part of India's home series versus England, which was followed by IPL 14's first leg and India's gruelling tour of the United Kingdom. Team India to play host to New Zealand, Sri Lanka, West Indies and South Africa in mouth-watering 2022 home season

On Thursday (September 16), Virat Kohli dropped a bomb by announcing his decision to resign from the T20I captaincy post after the forthcoming World Cup in the shortest format. Kohli took to his official Twitter handle to share the news, which has created a huge buzz in the cricketing fraternity and become a huge talking point since then.

While there were rumours of BCCI contemplating split-captaincy in the Indian cricket for a while, Kohli's decision is believed to be completely his own -- as per a report in Times of India -- with no role of the Indian cricket board. "Understanding workload is a very important thing...I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead the Indian team in Test and ODI cricket. I have given everything to the team during my time as T20 captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 team as a batsman moving forward," the 32-year-old said in his post.

Virat Kohli, on Thursday (September 16), dropped a big bomb by announcing his decision to step down as India's T20I captain after the forthcoming World Cup in the UAE. His decision surprised many, especially considering it came before the marquee event, however BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly has lavished praise on India's superstar cricketer. "Virat has been a true asset for Indian Cricket and has led with aplomb. He is one of the most successful captains in all the formats,” Sourav Ganguly said in a BCCI statement. “The decision has been made keeping in mind the future roadmap. “We thank Virat for his tremendous performance as the T20I Captain. We wish him all the best for the upcoming World Cup and beyond and hope that he continues to score plenty of runs for India,” added Ganguly. Meanwhile, the 32-year-old Kohli surprised one and all with his sudden announcement on Thursday evening. BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly lauds 'true asset' Virat Kohli as he announces decision to quit T20I captaincy after World Cup

On Thursday (September 16), Virat Kohli dropped a bomb by announcing his decision to step down as Team India's T20I captain after the upcoming T20 World Cup, in the UAE. With his decision, it has started a new discussion as to who will succeed Kohli in the shortest format.

While the 34-year-old Rohit Sharma seems like an obvious successor, who also had 5 IPL titles as Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper, some feel BCCI can invest in a young captain with Rohit-Kohli backing and grooming him to the core. However, former cricketer Madan Lal feels Hitman Rohit has emerged as a natural successor and can also become the ODI captain with good results as a T20I skipper.

"I don't think there will be any discussion about someone else's name because I think Rohit Sharma will become T20I captain. His performances in IPL as Mumbai Indians captain has been very good. BCCI secretary Jay Shah has spoken about the roadmap. In that case, Rohit Sharma was the vice-captain, he has a lot of experience having been Kohli's deputy," Madan Lal told AajTak.

He further asserted, "I don't think there will be any discussion on that. But we have to see whether the selectors will discuss a 50-over captain. Till now, Virat Kohli has led well in ODIs and Tests. He hasn't won an ICC title but he has won helped build strong bench strength. It depends on how Rohit Sharma performs. If he does well in T20 World Cup (next year), then there will be a discussion about him in the selection meeting. It is possible that if he produces good results, he can also be made captain of the 50-over format," he added.

Irfan Pathan asks a valid question as Virat Kohli set to resign as T20 captain after World Cup

Ravi Shastri is unlikely to continue as Team India head coach post the conclusion of the upcoming T20 World Cup, in the UAE. Shastri had taken over as India's full-time coach after Anil Kumble in mid-2017 and the team has enjoyed great success under him across formats. However, it has been reported that the former all-rounder isn't willing to renew his contract, which ends with India's campaign in the T20 World Cup.

For the unversed, Shastri's contract was extended post the 2019 ODI World Cup. However, as per a report in News18, he has already conveyed his decision to the Sourav Ganguly-led BCCI that he isn't willing to extend his contract this time around. Thus, the BCCI will send fresh applications for the post following his departure. Meanwhile, the contracts of bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar are also unlikely to be renewed, however, batting coach Vikram Rathour is expected to continue with his job.

Under Shastri, India reached the semi-finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup, ended as runners-up in the inaugural WTC and beat Australia twice in their own backyard in the last two editions of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India also ended the England Tests, although abruptly, with a 2-1 lead under his tenure in the United Kingdom recently.

The India-England Tests proved to a high-voltage affair and the five-match series was set for a terrific finale, at Old Trafford, Manchester, when the tour got cancelled in the wake of Covid-19 crisis in the Indian camp.
While talks were rife that Kohli should step down as limited-overs captain or at least get rid of the responsibilities from the shortest version due to his inability to lead India to an ICC title since taking over fully in early 2017, the criticism always seemed a bit harsh. After all, 'a captain is only as good as the team'. However, talks intensified after India lost the WTC final in mid-2021.

Moreover, Kohli's form across formats hasn't been at a level his fan clubs are used to. The maverick cricketer has set supremely high standards courtesy of his unmatched zeal for success, jaw-dropping consistency, strong will and fitness. Keeping all this in mind, his recent dip in form has become a topic of debate worldwide. For the unversed, his last international ton came in late 2019.

To add to it, cricket in COVID-19 times hasn't been easy, to say the least. Bio-bubble life, strict quarantine rules, being away from family for months or staying confined with them on tours has affected someone as mentally strong as Kohli.

While some may say that Kohli's decision was long due, his timing does trigger some panic among the Team India fans.

As the current all-format skipper has made it clear that he won't leave captaincy duties before the T20 World Cup -- which is praiseworthy -- a section of fans are already wondering if the timing of the decision can create adverse consequences. Here are some glaring questions which arises after Kohli's recent decision:

1) Could Kohli have announced his decision after the world cup, irrespective of India's campaign?

2) Clash of views? With Rohit Sharma very likely to succeed Kohli, he will want more say in decision-making even during the World cup. The leadership group already stars Kohli, Ravi Shastri (head coach) and MS Dhoni (team mentor). While Rohit was anyway going to be a part of crucial decisions, will he have a larger say, leading to varied opinions?

3) What if Kohli manages to lead India to the coveted title? Will he reconsider? Given that the superstar cricketer remains firm on his stance at all times, it is highly unlikely. But, it can lead to more talks regarding the timing of his decision.

For now, Indian fans have to believe that there is proper communication among the senior team management. However, India's T20 World Cup performance will now be measured more closely. If the Men in Blue fail to win the trophy, the timing of Kohli's latest decision might raise eyebrows; leading to his naysayers having plenty to scrutinise.

"I couldn't have done it without them - the boys, the support staff, the selection committee, my coaches, and each and every Indian who prayed for us to win. Understanding workload is a very important thing and considering my immense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all 3 formats and captaining regularly for last 5-6 years, I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead the Indian Team in Test and ODI Cricket. I have given everything to the Team during my time as T20 Captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 Team as a batsman moving forward." "Of course, arriving at this decision took a lot of time. After a lot of contemplation and discussions with my close people, Ravi bhai and also Rohit, who have been an essential part of the leadership group, I've decided to step down as the T20 Captain after this T20 World Cup in Dubai in October. I have also spoken to the secretary Mr Jay Shah and the President of BCCI Mr Sourav Ganguly along with all the selectors about the same. I will continue to serve Indian Cricket and the Indian Team to the best of my ability." After all, 'a captain is only as good as the team'. ALSO READ | India's tour of New Zealand pushed to late 2022 amid cramped schedule due to Covid-19: Report As the current all-format skipper has made it clear that he won't leave captaincy duties before the T20 World Cup -- which is praiseworthy -- a section of fans are already wondering if the timing of the decision can create adverse consequences. Here are some glaring questions which arises after Kohli's recent decision: 1) Could Kohli have announced his decision after the world cup, irrespective of India's campaign?

Timely done or untimely? Virat Kohli's resignation as T20I captain after World Cup leads to more questions than answers

BCCI announced a 15-man squad for Virat Kohli-led Team India's forthcoming T20 World Cup on September 8. While the squad features some surprise inclusions and few notable omission, R Ashwin's comeback has surely made heads turn.

For the unversed, the 34-year-old Ashwin wasn't favoured in the limited-overs squad since mid-2017. However, with Yuzvendra Chahal's dip in form and Washington Sundar's injury, Ashwin was preferred for the T20 WC. Though Ashwin's record in T20 WC is exceptional, with 20 wickets in 15 innings, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar feels it is just a consolation for his England Tests snub.

Ashwin didn't feature in the four Tests versus England, in the United Kingdom, and Gavaskar feels his inclusion is just a consolation as he might still find it tough to find a place in the line-up.

"Ashwin's return is a good thing but we'll have to wait and see if he gets a place in the playing XI. You have selected him in the 15, that's alright, you chose him in the squad in England as well but are not giving him the chance in the XI,” Gavaskar said on Sports Tak. "So, he’s perhaps just given a consolation cup to make up for the disappointment that he might have here (in England). Will he play in the XI? Only time will tell,” he added.

Apart from Ashwin, MS Dhoni was also included in the T20 WC squad as a team mentor. On the former Indian captain's return to the Indian dressing room, Gavaskar said, "MS Dhoni being the mentor is bigger news than Ashwin's selection because a captain, who led India to the 2011 World Cup and 2007 T20 World Cup wins, if he's in that camp, then India will immensely benefit from it."

Deepak Chahar is gearing up for IPL 2021's second and final leg, where he will once again represent the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise. The 29-year-old was last seen in action on the cricket field for Team India during their limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka in July.

India's second-stringed team had travelled to Sri Lanka, with Rahul Dravid and Shikhar Dhawan acting as the stand-in head coach and captain, respectively. While his tour was cut-short after the T20I series opener, being one of the close contacts of Covid-positive Krunal Pandya, Chahar accounted for 6 scalps, in 3 matches, and made a match-winning contribution with an unbeaten 69 in the Men in Blue's second and penultimate ODI versus the Islanders.

Recalling a hilarious interaction which he had with Dravid during the SL trip, Chahar told Aakash Chopra in a recent interaction on his Youtube channel, "When we reached Sri Lanka, Rahul (Dravid) sir first asked me about my age. I told him I am 28 and will turn 29 soon. So, he was like - ‘is it your original age or cricketer’s age?’. Then I told him that mine is original because my father was in the Air Force, so there was no way I could forge my age!"

Deepak Chahar - An ideal Test all-rounder?

“On a serious note, he (Dravid) also told me that I have 4-5 years of Test cricket left in me. Those words have stayed with me. He has always considered me as a Test bowler and has selected me for red-ball matches for India A. Whenever I have played under him, I have always performer well with both bat and ball. He knows my capability very well," Chahar told Chopra.

Currently, Chahar is preparing hard for the IPL 2021's UAE leg, which commences from September 19 at Dubai. He is also named in the reserves list for India's T20 World Cup campaign.

When BCCI announced Team India's 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, in the UAE, there were some surprise additions and notable omissions. However, the biggest talking point became former captain MS Dhoni's inclusion as the team mentor for the showpiece event.

Dhoni, who retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020, has been roped in as team mentor for the marquee tournament to help Kohli & Co. during the high-voltage event and guide the national side to their first ICC title win in over 8 years. For the unversed, Team India's last ICC trophy came in the 2013 Champions Trophy under Dhoni's leadership.

Under Kohli, India have performed exceedingly well across formats and in the last three ICC events, however, they haven't managed to win big tournaments in the recent past. Hence, Dhoni has been added to work closely with Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri. Since his appointment, many former cricketers have shared their thoughts on him taking over as the team mentor.

In this regard, former cricketer Farokh Engineer also revealed what he feels seeing Dhoni as the team mentor, while speaking to Sports Tak. "But why not? IPL has mentors. Dhoni has always and still has got the Midas touch and whatever he has touched has turned into gold. I would hope that Dhoni brings us extra luck and I'm sure his knowledge would be extremely useful," Engineer was quoted as saying.

"What does a mentor do? It's an honorary thing. Sachin Tendulkar is the mentor of Mumbai Indians. And it’s lovely to have guys like him and Sachin around. In our time, once you give up the game, people forgot us. But today, fans do not forget. If you're a good and attractive cricketers, fans will always remember you," he added.

The former Indian wicketkeeper feels that Captain Cool's experience will certainly be a great inspiration to the Men in Blue and is content with BCCI's decision to use his experience and stature. "At this level, players are not coached. A coach can help you and guide you just a little bit – somethings here and there or on some technical aspects," he further opined. Engineer added, "Dhoni is not the type to interfere with something or somebody. If he sees that something could be done better, I'm sure he would suggest it in a very clever way to Ravi and Virat."

It will be interesting to see Dhoni's return back to the Indian dressing room and if his presence will prove to be the difference for Kohli & Co. India start their campaign on October 24 versus Pakistan. 'MS Dhoni still has got....' - Farokh Engineer opines on why BCCI named former captain as Team India's mentor for T20 WC

Virat Kohli's batting struggles have been known to world cricket by now. The 32-year-old Kohli hasn't scored an international ton since late 2019. Since then, the Indian captain has crossed the fifty-run mark on several occasions across formats, but he hasn't converted any of them into a daddy hundred.

Amid his dip in form, many former cricketers and experts are of the opinion that it is time to see split-captaincy in Team India, with Kohli making way for Rohit Sharma in the shorter formats and rediscovering his form overall. However, former Indian skipper Kapil Dev feels Kohli's lean phase isn't due to captaincy pressure.

"For all these years, when he was scoring runs, no one said anything about captaincy affecting Virat's batting and now suddenly, there are opinions when there's been a little up and down in his graph. When he scored those double centuries and so many hundreds, wasn't there pressure then? It means that his captaincy should not be the focus. Instead, look at his ability," Kapil said on 'Uncut'.

"The graph has surely gone up and down but for how long? Age 28 to 32 is the time when you really blossom. He is now experienced and mature. He just needs to identify himself and look to score big," he added.

For the unversed, Rahane averages only 19.86 since his Melbourne Test ton, in late 2020. In addition, the 33-year-old has only one fifty-plus score in the last ten innings and was woefully out of form in the England Tests in the United Kingdom.

With India set to play the T20 World Cup, soon after IPL 14's second and final leg, and then to host New Zealand in two Tests in November, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has backed Rahane to feature in the home assignments, but has set an ultimatum for the senior batsman.

Bold claim by Virender Sehwag

Speaking on a discussion on Sony Sports Network, Sehwag said, "Everyone goes through a bad phase. The question is how you behave with your player in a bad phase, whether you back him or leave him. According to me, Ajinkya Rahane should get a chance when the next series happens in India. If he doesn't perform there, you can say - thank you very much for your contribution."

BCCI announced a 15-man squad for Virat Kohli-led Team India for the upcoming T20 World Cup, with MS Dhoni being named as the team mentor for the marquee tournament in the UAE. The showpiece event will kick off in the UAE soon after IPL 14's conclusion, on October 17.

As India remain without an ICC trophy since the 2013 Champions Trophy, the Men in Blue will be desperate to win their second T20 World Cup title. Under Kohli, India have remained a powerhouse across formats and even performed well in the last three ICC tournaments. However, they haven't returned as champions. Hence, the Indian cricket board has once again relied on Dhoni to work closely with the team as a mentor and help them end their ICC-title drought.

While many of the former cricketers have reacted to Dhoni's appointment as the team mentor, Ajay Jadeja also joined the bandwagon. However, he is surprised by the decision of Dhoni's addition and told during a discussion on Sony Sports, "It is impossible for me to understand. I am thinking for two days about what could be the thinking. I am not talking of MS Dhoni, the understanding he has or how useful he can be, I am not going towards that. It was like you sent Ravindra ahead of Ajinkya, the person thinks why it has been done. I am surprised. There is no fan bigger than me of MS Dhoni. I believe MS Dhoni was the first captain who made the next captain before leaving or they used to always keep changing whenever they wanted."

India and Pakistan's cricketing ties are now limited to ICC or multi-nation events. It has been the case ever since the political relationship between the two neighbouring countries went downhill. With Ramiz Raja taking over as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)'s chairman, one of the first questions he was asked post his joining was whether there is a possibility to resume Indo-Pak bilateral cricketing ties.

Ramiz said in a press conference, "Impossible right now. The sporting model has been spoiled by politics and right now it is a status quo and we are not in a hurry on this issue because we have to focus on our domestic and local cricket."

Both teams will, however, square off in the upcoming T20 World Cup, in the UAE, as they are placed in the same group (Group 2).

The high-voltage clash will be held at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai on October 24 (Friday).
Split captaincy has been a topic of debate in Team India, especially after Virat Kohli failed to guide the Men in Blue to the ODI World Cup title in 2019. After India failed in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final as well, talks were rife that Kohli should be relieved of captaincy in the limited-overs format for him to focus on his batting across all forms of the game and take the Test side forward.

Ahead of the T20 World Cup, there are reports that suggest Kohli is willing to give up captaincy in white-ball format to his deputy Rohit Sharma. "Virat himself will make the announcement. He is of the view that he needs to concentrate on his batting and go back to becoming what he’s always been — the best batsman in the world,” TOI quoted sources as saying.

"Captaincy in 3 formats affecting Virat’s batting. We realise spin-masters will be at work, giving their own twists to these developments. That’s the reason BCCI is planning this well in advance. In the end, Virat and Rohit are on the same page. If he had to ever take over as white-ball captain, that time is now. And it’s going to be a win-win for the Indian team because the two senior cricketers are so well in tune with each other,” the source added.

Rohit Sharma likely to replace Virat Kohli as Team India's limited-overs captain post T20 World Cup: Reports

On Monday (September 13), BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal has dismissed all rumours of Rohit Sharma set to take over as India's white-ball captain from Virat Kohli. The BCCI treasurer has made it clear that Hitman won't take over as the captain in the shorter formats post the T20 World Cup, in the UAE.

There was a report, in Times of India, which claimed that Kohli is willing to step down from the top spot in the limited-overs format and has already informed the team management and Rohit about his decision. However, Dhumal reacted to the rumours and has put an end to the speculations.

"This is all rubbish. Nothing (as) such is happening. This is all what you guys (media) are talking about. Split captaincy debate surfaced once again after Kohli & Co. failed to win the inaugural WTC final, versus New Zealand, in mid-June in Southampton. Back then, many thought Kohli can give up limited-overs captaincy and take the team further ahead in the purest format of the game.
