Tamil Nadu's Principal Opposition party, DMK, has warned legal action against the Information and Public Relations Department of Chief Minister Vijay's Government, accusing it of making political attacks against the opposition and its representatives via social media posts. Senior DMK leader and lawyer, P. Wilson, highlighted that "The Department of Information and Public Relations(DIPR) is a government department. While it’s part of their job to post speeches of Hon. CM & Ministers on social media, the captions being added by the DIPR are political attacks on the opposition & MLAs. These kinds of political statements by a government department are unprecedented and do not bode well for parliamentary democracy." Also read: India's first private gold mine inaugurated: All about Geomysore-Jonnagiri Project in Andhra Pradesh The DMK has taken this stance in response to a few reel-format social media posts shared by the Government's DIPR. These posts contained excerpts of the Chief Minister's speech in the Assembly during the recent session, which was the first for the TVK Government. Some of these posts were uploaded with captions that translate to: Corruption cases are being exposed one by one!; A retaliation the opposition can't forget! This is not a two-faced government. These captions were posted along with minute-long videos of the Chief Minister's speech in the Assembly. Replying to one such post of the DIPR, DMK leader and Parliamentarian P. Wilson stated, " There is a difference between party and government. Hope the bureaucrats don’t blur this line in a newfound frenzy to please the new CM" He also requested Chief Minister Vijay to stop using the Government's DIPR as his personal public relations agency. Wilson also questioned if this was the effect of Vijay's close aide, Jagadish, a film producer and head of a talent management firm, being appointed as a private secretary in the Chief Minister's office. DIPR runs on the public exchequer, don’t go down this Route. We will take legal action if it continues and hold those responsible to account, Wilson warned in his social media post. This incident comes at a time when both Chief Minister Vijay and Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin have been publicly making personal remarks against each other in a veiled manner.

In a major policy shift that is set to delight both theatre owners and movie buffs, newly appointed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister S Joseph Vijay has granted permission for all cinema halls across the state to screen five shows per day for newly released Tamil films. The significant policy update comes after a meeting on May 16, 2026, where key representatives and stakeholders of the Tamil film industry met with the Chief Minister to submit a list of grievances and demands. During the meeting, one of the major requests was the relaxation of screening limits to help maximise revenue during a movie's opening week.
What were the rules before?
Previously, under Rule 14-A of the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, theatres were strictly limited to four shows a day. Extra special shows were heavily regulated and required explicit, case-by-case approval from local District Collectors or city Police Commissioners. Responding to the industry's appeals, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) announced a formal amendment to the decades-old regulation rules. Moving forward, theatres can automatically screen five shows daily for the first seven days following a new Tamil film's release. Additionally, the five-show-per-day allowance will permanently apply to all Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, and local festival days. To cut down on bureaucratic red tape, Chief Minister Vijay has also ordered that theatre owners are completely exempt from seeking separate government or licensing permits to run these additional screenings during the stipulated dates. The announcement arrives on the heels of the box-office success of the film Karuppu (starring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan), which recently received high praise from Vijay, signalling strong state support for the growth and recovery of the regional cinematic economy. Internal rift in All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) deepened on Wednesday (May 13) as party chief Edappadi K Palaniswami removed party leaders from their posts for supporting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay. This comes after the legislature party witnessed a vertical split during the trust vote on the floor of the Assembly. While a total of 25 MLAs, including senior leaders SP Velumani, C Ve Shanmugam and C Vijayabaskar, voted in favour of the confidence motion moved by CM Vijay, 22 MLAs led by Palaniswami voted against it.Following the voting, AIADMK chief removed the rebel leaders, filling the vacant positions with new district secretaries and party functionaries. Natham Viswanathan has also been removed from the posts of AIADMK Deputy General Secretary and Dindigul East District Secretary.

Slamming the move, Shanmugam, who was removed from the posts of Organising Secretary and Villupuram District Secretary, said, “After General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami assumed responsibility, not only have the defeats continued, but we should at least have been increasing our number of seats. Instead, with every election, our setbacks have become more severe, and we have been steadily declining.”“Today, when the General Secretary (EPS) is questioned about why we lost, he responds by asking, ‘Didn’t the AIADMK lose in 1996? Didn’t we lose in 2006 as well?’ Yes, we did lose. But Puratchi Thalaivi Amma had the capability to bring the party back to power again. After every defeat, Amma would declare that she would restore MGR’s rule once more, and she succeeded in bringing the party back to office for a second term. It was Amma (Jayalalithaa) who delivered a massive victory in the 1998 Parliamentary elections. There was neither arrogance born out of victory nor a tendency to hide away after defeat,” he added.Remembering late supremo J Jayalalithaa, Shanmugam said, “Amma’s sole objective was the success of the movement founded by MGR. She never carried the attitude that “I alone am supreme” or that everyone must come to her without question.”The move is being seen as one of the biggest disciplinary actions taken by the AIADMK leadership since internal dissent erupted in the party after the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The action came amid an open revolt within the AIADMK following the election results, with a section of party MLAs accusing EPS of diluting the party’s traditional anti-DMK position and allegedly attempting to strike an understanding with the DMK to stop Vijay from coming to power. The rebellion became evident during Vijay’s trust vote in the Assembly, when rebel AIADMK legislators backed the TVK-led government, helping it secure a majority in the 234-member House. The developments have since intensified the leadership tussle within the AIADMK, with dissenting leaders demanding organisational reforms and the return of expelled leaders to strengthen the party ahead of upcoming elections.

The leaders also exchanged silk shawls and bouquets.
Stalin advises Vijay on Tamil Nadu’s financial position
The meeting came weeks after a bitter electoral battle between Stalin-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam ahead of the April 23 Assembly elections, which TVK went on to win. A day earlier, while congratulating Vijay on taking oath as chief minister, Stalin advised him against claiming that the state government lacked funds after Vijay announced plans to release a white paper on Tamil Nadu’s financial condition. “Don't start saying right away that the government has no money. It does have it. What’s needed is the will to give it to the people, and the ability to govern,” Stalin said. Referring to Vijay’s remarks on the state’s debt burden, Stalin added, “You yourself mentioned in your very first speech the accusation that ‘the previous government left behind a debt of 10 lakh crore rupees and emptied the treasury’... The debt level of Tamil Nadu is within the permitted limits”.

After nearly two years of a fierce political contest, the meeting marked Vijay’s first interaction with Stalin after winning the Assembly elections and assuming office as chief minister, and the visit was described as a “courtesy call”.
