Pathan feels Shami is the best option India have if they want to improve their prospects with the new ball as he has the form and the experience to come and deliver straightaway.

Now there is an opportunity here whether a bowler can come in the World Cup race who can help the Indian team. A regular in the Test and ODI line-up, Shami hasn't played a lot of T20Is prior to and even before the last year's World Cup, held in the UAE. Before represting India in the 2021 T20 WC, Shami's last appearance in the format came in December 2020.

“Shami isn’t getting any younger and we need him fresh for Tests. That is why he is not being considered for T20s. We have had a chat with him post-T20 World Cup on his workload management. This is how it is going to be now. For now, he is not in plans for T20s and the focus will be on youngsters,” a member of the selection committee told the portal.

Former Indian opener and chief selector Kris Srikkanth, however,&nbsp;feels the veteran is just providing the 'final touches' and isn't a 'finisher'.

"An actual finisher doesn't play between 16-20 overs. A finisher is a guy who takes the match along from 8th or 9th over and eventually finishes with 60 odd runs. Dinesh's role is defined. Jaffer believes Kohli will keep his original no.3 spot despite poor form in international cricket at present.
