'Iran does not control the strait, Traffic is flowing': US Central Command says Strait of Hormuz open

Oman has drafted a proposal to manage the Strait of Hormuz, said, as reported by CNN, quoting an anonymous source with knowledge of the talks. Under the agreement, both the corridor, Omani and Iranian, located in the territorial waters of both nations, will remain open. The Omani corridor will allow for shipping without any navigation fee as per the pre-war conditions. However, vessels transiting through the Northern corridor will have to coordinate with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Force, but it will also remian toll free.
Europeans are considering paying a voluntary fee
A central point of contention in the negotiations involves transit fees. The specific two-route proposal explicitly stipulates that no tolls would be charged on either corridor. According to a report by the Guardian, the European governments are examining the potential of a voluntary navigation fee as a long-term solution to tensions over one of the world's most critical shipping lanes following months of conflict between Iran, the United States and Israel. Britain's Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy warned that mandatory charges for passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be "disastrous." However, some members of the UK government claim that fees for navigation-related services are already accepted in the English Channel and the Strait of Malacca. Also Read: Labour leadership race begins as Andy Burnham emerges frontrunner to replace Starmer
Iran blatantly ignores 24-hour US ultimatum
According to Axios, on July 10, the Trump Administration demanded that Iran publicly acknowledge that the Strait of Hormuz is open as a 24-hour ultimatum. Iran completely ignored the ultimatum, choosing instead to escalate hostilities on the ground. It targeted a Cyprus-flagged vessel, GFS Galaxy, which was attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz through the Omani corridor, bypassing the IRGC warning. Oman has proposed a two-route Strait of Hormuz framework as Europe considers a voluntary transit fee amid the escalating Iran-US Hormuz crisis

Europeans are considering paying a voluntary fee A central point of contention in the negotiations involves transit fees. The fragile peace in the Middle East has shattered. Just weeks after signing a memorandum of understanding, U.S. President Donald Trump has declared the ceasefire with Iran "over" following a series of aggressive attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. As U.S. Central Command launches fresh strikes to protect the vital waterway, the situation has escalated into a high-stakes game of brinkmanship.

Big setback for Trump | Europe ready to pay Hormuz toll? | New fees in the Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump says Washington is ready for another round of negotiations with Iran, even as the US imposed fresh sanctions targeting key Iranian financial networks. Reports suggest new talks could take place in Switzerland, while Qatar, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Oman continue diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation in the region. Meanwhile, Iran has rejected claims that it requested negotiations and has accused the US of violating previous understandings through renewed military action.

US revokes Iran oil waiver after Hormuz tanker attacks, tightens sanctions

Iran is set to introduce new fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the busiest and most sensitive oil routes in the world. Iranian Ambassador to China Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli on Saturday (Jul 4) said that Iran is planning to begin charging a “service fees” for vessels using the waterway. He also hinted that not every country would be treated the same, assuring that “friendly nations” would receive “special treatment.”Speaking at the World Peace Forum in Beijing, Fazli said that the idea is being worked out with Oman, which also shares responsibility for the region’s maritime traffic.“As a country where the Hormuz is part of its territorial waters, we will definitely charge service fees,” Fazli said as per his translated remarks, insisting such fees would not be a “toll.”“These new arrangements will be concerning guaranteeing the security of passage through the Straits of Hormuz, supervision of the passage of the vessels... and also guaranteeing and dealing with the environmental consequences of the massive number of ships,” he said.“We will definitely consider special treatment for the countries that were friendly to us and specially stood by us during the hard times,” he added. The United States has already pushed back against the idea, saying Iran should not be charging ships for using the route. A temporary deal after recent fighting had allowed vessels to pass freely for about 60 days, but that arrangement is now running out, and a permanent system hasn’t been agreed on.The Strait of Hormuz is the only maritime outlet for ports located in the Persian Gulf, accounting for about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. Its blockade during the hostilities in the region has significantly affected global energy supply, triggering a sharp rise in oil prices. The route has since reopened under a ceasefire agreement, but the bigger negotiations are still unresolved.

He also hinted that not every country would be treated the same, assuring that “friendly nations” would receive “special treatment.” Speaking at the World Peace Forum in Beijing, Fazli said that the idea is being worked out with Oman, which also shares responsibility for the region’s maritime traffic. “As a country where the Hormuz is part of its territorial waters, we will definitely charge service fees,” Fazli said as per his translated remarks, insisting such fees would not be a “toll.” “These new arrangements will be concerning guaranteeing the security of passage through the Straits of Hormuz, supervision of the passage of the vessels... and also guaranteeing and dealing with the environmental consequences of the massive number of ships,” he said. “We will definitely consider special treatment for the countries that were friendly to us and specially stood by us during the hard times,” he added. The United States has already pushed back against the idea, saying Iran should not be charging ships for using the route. A temporary deal after recent fighting had allowed vessels to pass freely for about 60 days, but that arrangement is now running out, and a permanent system hasn’t been agreed on. The Strait of Hormuz is the only maritime outlet for ports located in the Persian Gulf, accounting for about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. Its blockade during the hostilities in the region has significantly affected global energy supply, triggering a sharp rise in oil prices. The route has since reopened under a ceasefire agreement, but the bigger negotiations are still unresolved.

India has officially revoked the emergency natural gas supply regulations that were imposed during the peak of the West Asia conflict. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued a notification omitting the operational provisions of the March 2026 order, lifting restrictions and restoring normal gas allocation to all commercial, industrial, and power consumers as maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz stabilized following a ceasefire.

Just two weeks after the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending months of conflict in West Asia, the agreement is facing its first major test. The US and Iran will continue technical talks after agreeing to temporarily stand down following recent clashes. Both sides say ships can move freely through the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite the recent exchange of attacks, the United States and Iran are set to continue technical talks aimed at ending the war in the Middle East, a US official said. This comes after the American and Iranian forces traded strikes despite a fragile June 17 memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending the conflict. The United States have also announced that both sides will stand down after the lastest clashes. “Technical talks are slated to continue on all areas of the MOU (memorandum of understanding). Both sides will stand down for now, and vessels can move freely” in and around the Strait of Hormuz, the official told AFP. The official did not provide further details on when and where the talks will take place. Meanwhile, Axios reported that discussions would resume on Tuesday (Jun 30) in Qatar.
