US claims Strait of Hormuz will be toll-free. Iran says ships will pay maritime service fees. What's really in the peace deal?

After it was revealed that the US-Iran agreement had been signed digitally Sunday, President Donald Trump said that ships were “starting to move” out of the Strait of Hormuz under the agreement reached with Iran, but international shipping associations have warned that it is still too risky, and only one ship had transited the strait on Monday, according to tracking data.&nbsp;“Ships are starting to move, many loaded up with Oil, out of the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump said in a Truth Social post on Monday.&nbsp;&nbsp;“They are going along the Southern ‘Highway,’ which is totally safe, secure, and pristine. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Trump had said Sunday that the vital shipping lane would only reopen after the signing of the memorandum of understanding with Iran. US-Iran Peace Deal: Global Stocks Rally on Peace Breakthrough

The good news is that the US and Iran on Sunday (Jun 14) reached a peace Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), to be signed on Friday. But the bad news is, there still appears to be differences over the full reopening timeline for the Strait of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump announced the immediate lifting of the US naval blockade. He said the strait will reopen on the signing of the MoU, and added it will be "permanently toll-free." The MoU reportedly covers a drawdown of US forces. China on Monday welcomed the agreement between the United States and Iran to end the Middle East conflict and praised Pakistan for its mediation role in facilitating the negotiations. The US and Iran stated that they reached a framework deal to end the war across all fronts, including Lebanon, and reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz. However, both nations gave limited details on the thorny question of Tehran's nuclear programme. "China welcomes the agreement... and expresses appreciation for the mediation efforts made by Pakistan," foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said in a news briefing, and added that Beijing hopes the deal will be signed as scheduled. The Iran war has triggered what analysts are calling one of the worst oil shocks in modern history, sending crude prices soaring and rattling global markets. Fears over disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz — a key global oil route have intensified concerns about fuel inflation, energy shortages and economic instability worldwide.

Iran War Sparks Worst Oil Shock in History

US President Donald Trump once again cancelled a scheduled attack on Iran on Thursday night (Jun 11). This makes one wonder: Is Trump the one who's under pressure to reach a deal with Iran? He faces economic, political, and strategic pressures ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Despite leverage through sanctions, military threats, and economic pressure on Iran, the costs of a prolonged conflict are falling on his own political coalition and agenda.<h2>The midterms clock is ticking</h2>Republicans are entering the midterms defending a narrow House majority that is vulnerable to the traditional anti-incumbency. Morgan Stanley's policy team warned that the war's energy shock could cost Republicans their Senate majority and significantly worsen the national debt. Trump and Republicans were elected on promises to cut inflation. They now face an inflation surge tied to the war, and several opinion polls are against them.&nbsp;Democrats will make the rising cost of living a central campaign issue in the midterms. &nbsp;A prolonged war will disrupt Trump's legislative agenda and GOP control of Congress.Trump once said he "doesn't care about the midterms," but Iran war escalation can affect his party's prospects. He needs a face-saving deal before November. Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/we-ended-the-war-today-trump-s-big-declaration-after-halting-iran-strikes-what-s-really-happening-1781229576328">'We ended the war today': Trump's BIG declaration after halting Iran strikes - What's really happening</a><h2>Americans feel pinch at pump as Iran uses Strait of Hormuz as leverage</h2>Two weeks into the war, gasoline prices rose nearly 60 cents per gallon in the US, or about 19 per cent, while inflation reached 4.2 per cent in May, the highest since April 2023. A GOP strategist said, "You can't hide gas prices… there's a giant sign on every street corner saying how bad things are."&nbsp;Even if a deal is reached now, reopening the Strait of Hormuz won't normalise markets immediately. Iran has successfully used the strategic waterway as leverage. Tankers are trapped. Inventories are swelling. Infrastructure is damaged due to Operation Epic Fury, the US blockade of the strait, and Iran's counterstrikes. A full recovery will happen pretty close to the November 3 elections.&nbsp;Consultancy firm Wood Mackenzie estimated that even if the war is resolved, Brent crude would only fall to $80 by year-end.<h2>Trump is the one pushing for a deal, while Iran is softpeddaling&nbsp;</h2>Trump has asked Iran to reach a deal at least eight times through Truth Social rants or public remarks. He gave several deadlines to Tehran, while often saying the deal was "close," "largely negotiated," or could happen "this weekend." Nothing happened. He claimed Iran had "no choice" but to agree to the deal. But every time, Iran shrugged off the threats, refusing to budge on issues like its nuclear and missile programmes, and unfreezing of Iranian assets. It has now become predictable that Trump threatens military action and then postpones or cancels it. &nbsp; He explains the threat-pause-cancel cycles as arising from requests by Gulf allies, and even the mediator, Pakistan.<a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/us-iran-war-trump-says-iran-deal-could-be-signed-very-soon-amid-ongoing-talks-1781246509761/embed">https://www.wionews.com/videos/us-iran-war-trump-says-iran-deal-could-be-signed-very-soon-amid-ongoing-talks-1781246509761/embed</a><h2>What, or who, are putting pressure on Trump to reach a deal?</h2>Volatility and disruptions in the oil and energy markets are among the main pressures. Shipping and trans-shipment industries are dealing with trapped tankers, supply bottlenecks, and infrastructure damage. &nbsp; From businesses to national governments, the demand is for lower energy costs and market predictability. Supply chain disruptions caused by the Strait of Hormuz &nbsp;blockades are raising costs for food, fertilisers and shipping for the world. Gulf allies of the US - particularly UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia- appear to favour stability, lower energy volatility, and the reopening of shipping routes.&nbsp;<h2>Brand Trump is being affected badly</h2>Trump is known for the book ‘Art of the Deal’. But today, his personal brand and reputation as a dealmaker are under threat. Trump risks triggering a wider regional war, given the Iranian attacks on US bases and ally fatigue with prolonged conflict. He risks being associated with another ‘endless’ war, not lasting peace. &nbsp;Iran's ability to make any attack on it costly for the American interests in the Gulf region and global economy is a constraint on Trump from further escalating the issue. Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/what-s-in-the-latest-iran-deal-trump-says-he-s-ready-to-sign-with-tehran-1781244692584">What's in the latest Iran deal Trump says he's ready to sign with Tehran</a><h2>What leverage does Trump have over Iran?</h2>The top one is the US sanctions and economic pain for Iran through the "maximum pressure" framework. Trump appears to be using military threats and deadlines as negotiating tools, raising the question: Is there a method to the madness? Donald Trump appears to be under rising political and economic pressure to secure an Iran deal. The US inflation, gasoline prices and Strait of Hormuz disruptions threaten Republican midterm prospects and his dealmaker image.

Despite leverage through sanctions, military threats, and economic pressure on Iran, the costs of a prolonged conflict are falling on his own political coalition and agenda. The midterms clock is ticking Republicans are entering the midterms defending a narrow House majority that is vulnerable to the traditional anti-incumbency. Morgan Stanley's policy team warned that the war's energy shock could cost Republicans their Senate majority and significantly worsen the national debt. Trump and Republicans were elected on promises to cut inflation. They now face an inflation surge tied to the war, and several opinion polls are against them. Democrats will make the rising cost of living a central campaign issue in the midterms. A prolonged war will disrupt Trump's legislative agenda and GOP control of Congress. Trump once said he "doesn't care about the midterms," but Iran war escalation can affect his party's prospects. He needs a face-saving deal before November. Also read: 'We ended the war today': Trump's BIG declaration after halting Iran strikes - What's really happening Americans feel pinch at pump as Iran uses Strait of Hormuz as leverage Two weeks into the war, gasoline prices rose nearly 60 cents per gallon in the US, or about 19 per cent, while inflation reached 4.2 per cent in May, the highest since April 2023. A GOP strategist said, "You can't hide gas prices… there's a giant sign on every street corner saying how bad things are." Even if a deal is reached now, reopening the Strait of Hormuz won't normalise markets immediately. Iran has successfully used the strategic waterway as leverage. Tankers are trapped. Inventories are swelling. Infrastructure is damaged due to Operation Epic Fury, the US blockade of the strait, and Iran's counterstrikes. A full recovery will happen pretty close to the November 3 elections. Consultancy firm Wood Mackenzie estimated that even if the war is resolved, Brent crude would only fall to $80 by year-end. Trump is the one pushing for a deal, while Iran is softpeddaling Trump has asked Iran to reach a deal at least eight times through Truth Social rants or public remarks. He explains the threat-pause-cancel cycles as arising from requests by Gulf allies, and even the mediator, Pakistan. https://www.wionews.com/videos/us-iran-war-trump-says-iran-deal-could-be-signed-very-soon-amid-ongoing-talks-1781246509761/embed What, or who, are putting pressure on Trump to reach a deal? Volatility and disruptions in the oil and energy markets are among the main pressures. Shipping and trans-shipment industries are dealing with trapped tankers, supply bottlenecks, and infrastructure damage. From businesses to national governments, the demand is for lower energy costs and market predictability. Supply chain disruptions caused by the Strait of Hormuz blockades are raising costs for food, fertilisers and shipping for the world. Gulf allies of the US - particularly UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia- appear to favour stability, lower energy volatility, and the reopening of shipping routes. Brand Trump is being affected badly Trump is known for the book ‘Art of the Deal’. But today, his personal brand and reputation as a dealmaker are under threat. Trump risks triggering a wider regional war, given the Iranian attacks on US bases and ally fatigue with prolonged conflict. He risks being associated with another ‘endless’ war, not lasting peace. Iran's ability to make any attack on it costly for the American interests in the Gulf region and global economy is a constraint on Trump from further escalating the issue. Also read: What's in the latest Iran deal Trump says he's ready to sign with Tehran What leverage does Trump have over Iran? The top one is the US sanctions and economic pain for Iran through the "maximum pressure" framework. Trump appears to be using military threats and deadlines as negotiating tools, raising the question: Is there a method to the madness? His alternating ‘deal talk’ and military threats could be a deliberate bargaining strategy designed to extract stronger concessions from Iran. 'We ended the war today', really? Is Trump under more pressure than Iran to reach a deal? The Big Question

New Delhi: India’s Directorate General of Shipping has advised all Indian seafarers serving onboard Indian and foreign-flagged vessels transiting “through conflict-affected waters to exercise the highest degree of caution and vigilance.” The vessel operators, ship managers and shipping companies have also been advised to adhere strictly to prevailing maritime security protocols.&nbsp; This comes as three foreign-flagged vessels, with Indian crew onboard, have been attacked by US forces off the coast of Oman. This has prompted a strong response from India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), including the summoning of US CdA Jason Meeks. The incidents, involving vessels accused of attempting to breach a US-imposed blockade on Iranian oil exports, have raised concerns over maritime safety and the risks faced by Indian seafarers.&nbsp;MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “These attacks came from US Navy stationed in the region. The 3 ships involved are foreign flagged...2 of them are OFAC sanctioned, and one is non-compliant.” Two of the ships were already under “US sanctions” as part of the so-called “shadow fleet”, ageing tankers, evading Western sanctions. These vessels often use complex ownership structures, ship-to-ship transfers in remote areas, and flag-hopping to obscure their activities.&nbsp;Officials note that crews, including Indians, often join such vessels knowingly for higher pay or through unscrupulous recruitment agents. While expressing concern for its nationals, New Delhi has stressed the distinction between legitimate Indian shipping and foreign-flagged operations in the sanctions grey zone.&nbsp; The first incident involved the MV Marivex, a Palau-flagged vessel attacked on 8 June 2026 in the Oman Search and Rescue Region. According to US accounts, the ship reported Fujairah in the UAE as its next port of call, but this was unverified. It allegedly attempted to run the blockade on multiple occasions despite repeated warnings. On its third try, it was turned south towards Masirah Island, claiming it would comply. On 8 June, it stopped north of the island, appearing to mask movements for a fourth attempt using Omani waters. US authorities stated the vessel was “disabled” after ignoring interceptions. 24 Indian nationals onboard the vessel were rescued by Oman authorities.&nbsp; On 10 June, the Palau-flagged MT Settebello was targeted. US CENTCOM described it as a “non-compliant” vessel attempting to transport Iranian oil. Precision munitions struck the engine room after the crew failed to heed directions. 3 Indian nationals died in the incident, sparking anger against the US, but raising concern about the actions of the vessels as well.&nbsp; One Indian deck cadet, 23-year-old Aditya Sharma, was killed. His father, Rajesh Sharma, expressed profound grief, seeking accountability. “The captain continued to sail the ship, and was under pressure... Despite the blockade, the ship continued to vessel. A warning was given... The US military took a deadly action, and a number of other measures can be taken to take control, like takeover, crew member arrest, and why use a missile. This is a matter that needs to be investigated.”&nbsp; The third vessel, MT Jalveer (Guinea-Bissau-flagged), was hit on 11 June with two AGM-114 missiles targeting its engine room. US forces linked the action to blockade violations, recent Iranian port calls (Bandar Abbas and Jask), and ship-to-ship transfers with OFAC-sanctioned vessels.&nbsp; The shadow fleet has become a major cause of concern for global maritime security and environmental risks from poorly maintained ships. India has emphasised that no Indian-flagged vessels have been targeted. Many of these vessels have the AIS system off, so that they cannot be detected, which makes it a much more dangerous situation. Around 12-13 Indian-flagged vessels remain in Hormuz and haven’t moved as Indian shipping authorities remain cautious. Those Indian ships that have moved have followed the new protocols that have come into being after the 40-day war came to an end. India has raised concerns at the United Nations over freedom of navigation after an Indian sailor was killed in a US-linked attack on a vessel in the Gulf region. New Delhi urged respect for international maritime laws and safe passage of commercial shipping routes amid escalating tensions. The statement comes as investigations continue into the incident, sparking diplomatic friction and renewed debate over security in key global waterways.

India Stresses Freedom of Navigation at UN After Indian Sailor Killed in US Attack

India on Wednesday (Jun 10) expressed deep concerns over the conflict in the Middle East at the United Nations Security Council Open Debate, urging all sides to exercise restraint, avoid escalation and prioritise the safety of civilians. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, firmly opposed the attacks on merchant shipping, condemning the loss of lives of Indian nationals in attacks against Gulf nations and commercial vessels. This comes after a US strike on a tanker off the coast of Oman earlier in the day. Three Indian crew members remain missing following the incident.Re-emphasising India’s position at the UN, Harish said, “We expressed our deep concern at the conflict in Iran and the Gulf region that, unfortunately, began in the holy month of Ramadan and urged all sides to exercise restraint, avoid escalation and prioritise the safety of civilians. The intensification of the conflict and its spread to other nations have evoked great anxiety. The mounting destruction and deaths and cessation of normal life and economic activities have deeply impacted India, a proximate neighbour with critical stakes in the security and stability of the region.”He added, “There are almost ten million Indian citizens who live and work in the Gulf region. Their safety and well-being are of the utmost priority to us. Our trade and energy supply chains are dependent on stability in the region, and any major disruption has serious consequences for the Indian economy.”Condemning the attacks that claimed the lives of Indian nationals, Harish said, “India is also firmly opposed to attacks on merchant shipping as many of our nationals are prominent in its global workforce. Many Indian nationals have lost their lives or are missing as a result of attacks against countries of the region and against merchant vessels and sea lanes of communication.”“In this background, India strongly reiterated its call for dialogue and diplomacy, avoiding impeding freedom of navigation and commerce, avoiding military targeting of commercial shipping, avoiding targeting of civilian population and infrastructure, and seeking an early end to the conflict. India expressed its support to all efforts aimed at peaceful resolution of issues,” the ambassador added.<h2>India summons US diplomat over strike on tanker</h2>On Wednesday (Jun 10), US forces struck Palau-flagged M/T Settebello in the Gulf of Oman. ‘Prioritise safety of civilians’: India urges restraint at UN after 3 killed in US strike on tanker

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Thursday that it had launched strikes on US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait in response to recent American attacks on Iranian territory.&nbsp;According to a statement carried by Iran's state-run IRNA news agency, the IRGC targeted several US military positions during two waves of operations. A new Congressional Research Service report has revealed the scale of American losses during the Iran conflict, with 42 US military aircraft reportedly damaged or destroyed. The losses include advanced platforms such as F-15s, an F-35 stealth fighter, MQ-9 Reaper drones and refuelling aircraft. Pentagon officials say the war has already cost nearly $29 billion, largely due to repair and replacement expenses. The conflict has also intensified debate over modern air warfare and the vulnerability of high-value military assets.

As global energy supply continues to be affected due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, oil prices have surged sharply in recent weeks. Since the war began on February 28, the maritime traffic through the strategic waterway has been severely restricted as military activity by both the United States and Iran has intensified in the region. The narrow strait is the only maritime outlet for ports located in the Persian Gulf, which accounts for nearly a fifth of the world’s oil trade. Now, a question arises whether Gulf countries can simply transport crude oil through neighbouring nations such as the UAE and Oman by land. However, it may not be as easy as it sounds. Let’s take a look at it.<h2>Why is Strait of Hormuz important?</h2>The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most critical energy chokepoints in the world. Located between Iran and Oman, the narrow waterway serves as the primary export route for Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, the UAE, and Qatar. The route is vital for the supply of oil to the rest of the world, especially Asia and Europe, which are heavily dependent on energy supplies from the Middle East. The blockade of the strait has disrupted the key shipping route, impacting global energy supply across the world. This has, in turn, spiked oil prices and raised concerns over supply shortages. Now, let’s explore whether a land route is feasible or not for oil transport. Also read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/why-china-isn-t-in-the-g7-and-why-it-still-looms-over-every-discussion-1781231173090">Why China isn’t in the G7 – and why it still looms over every discussion | WION Decodes</a><h2>Scale of shipment</h2>In a normal situation, before the conflict, 20 million barrels of oil and petroleum products per day would pass through the Strait of Hormuz. While tanker ships can carry massive quantities of crude efficiently and at relatively low cost, trucks or railways of that scale remain a challenge due to the lack of infrastructure. Moreover, transporting millions of barrels of oil across land would be logistically difficult, expensive, and time-consuming.<h2>Pipelines have limited capacity</h2>Some Gulf nations have existing pipelines designed to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, including the UAE’s pipeline to Fujairah on the Gulf of Oman and Saudi Arabia’s East-West Pipeline to the Red Sea. The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil routes, is witnessing heightened tension as reports suggest over 100 commercial vessels have been redirected amid ongoing instability linked to the Iran blockade. According to reports, the US Navy is quietly coordinating ship movements to reduce risks in the region, where navigation has become increasingly dangerous.

India on Friday (May 29) launched a high-priority operation to safely extract 13 Indian-flagged commercial vessels from the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating tensions in the Gulf region. The move is part of a broader effort involving multiple ministries to safeguard Indian citizens, seafarers, and commercial interests as regional instability grows. Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued an urgent directive, strongly advising Indian nationals against travelling to Iran.Opesh Kumar Sharma, Director at the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, confirmed that a specialised tactical plan is being deployed to extract the stranded domestic fleet in the strategic waterway.“A coordinated priority is prepared through which we try to get our ships out. Currently, there are about 13 Indian-flagged vessels there: one LPG tanker, five crude oil tankers, one chemical or product tanker, three container ships, two bulk carriers, and one dredger. Our priority is to get our ships out that are currently inside,” he said.He highlighted the successful transit of the Marshall Islands-flagged crude oil tanker Nissos Keros through the Strait of Hormuz on May 25–26. India has launched an operation to move 13 vessels out of the Strait of Hormuz amid Gulf tensions. The governent also urged citizens to avoid Iran and assisting thousands in returning home safely.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued an urgent directive, strongly advising Indian nationals against travelling to Iran. Opesh Kumar Sharma, Director at the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, confirmed that a specialised tactical plan is being deployed to extract the stranded domestic fleet in the strategic waterway. “A coordinated priority is prepared through which we try to get our ships out. Currently, there are about 13 Indian-flagged vessels there: one LPG tanker, five crude oil tankers, one chemical or product tanker, three container ships, two bulk carriers, and one dredger. Our priority is to get our ships out that are currently inside,” he said. He highlighted the successful transit of the Marshall Islands-flagged crude oil tanker Nissos Keros through the Strait of Hormuz on May 25–26. The vessel, carrying approximately 270,000 metric tonnes of crude oil and bound for Visakhapatnam, is expected to arrive on June 3.
