Iran plans managed shipping route in Strait of Hormuz, fees for compliant vessels

Iraq exported just 10 million barrels of crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz in April, a steep fall from the roughly 93 million barrels it shipped monthly before the Iran war disrupted Gulf energy routes, the country’s newly appointed oil minister Basim Mohammed said at a press conference on Saturday. The sharp decline puts focus on the growing impact of the regional conflict on global energy markets. The closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly a fifth of the world’s oil supply normally passes, has disrupted exports from Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, while pushing oil prices sharply higher.&nbsp;According to Reuters, while speaking at his first press conference since taking office, Mohammed said Iraqi exports through the waterway had become heavily dependent on the arrival of oil tankers, many of which were avoiding the route because of soaring insurance risks. “Exports through the Strait of Hormuz are low and depend on the arrival of oil tankers, which are not entering because of insurance,” he said.&nbsp;ALSO READ: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/-sovereign-and-independent-democratic-nation-taiwan-rejects-subordination-to-china-after-trump-warning-1778919125552">'Sovereign and independent democratic nation': Taiwan rejects subordination to China after Trump warning</a>&nbsp;<h2>Iraq turns to alternative export routes</h2><h2>&nbsp;</h2>Iraq is currently producing around 1.4 million barrels of oil per day, according to the minister. A conflict thousands of miles away has reached an unlikely consumer touchpoint: snack packaging. Japan’s leading snack producer, Calbee Inc., has announced it will temporarily shift 14 of its products to black-and-white packaging as disruptions linked to the Iran conflict strain supplies of key printing materials. Japan relies on imports from the Middle East for about 40 per cent of its naphtha consumption. The ongoing war in Iran has disrupted global energy flows, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for oil exports. As a result, supplies of petroleum-based inputs have tightened, pushing companies to reduce non-essential usage such as coloured inks.&nbsp;Calbee said the adjustment reflects the need to respond “flexibly to changing geopolitical conditions,” limiting printing to just two ink colours for selected products. According to reports, the decision reflects broader strain across Japanese manufacturing as firms adjust to rising input costs and volatile supply chains linked to the conflict. While government officials have said overall supplies remain stable, companies are increasingly adopting cost- and resource-saving measures.&nbsp; For consumers, the visual shift is stark: familiar brightly coloured snack packs are being replaced by monochrome designs, a quiet but visible reminder of how global conflict can reshape even the most ordinary aspects of daily life.

The company said the change will begin from May 25 and is intended to conserve ink and maintain stable production, while leaving product quality unchanged. “This measure is intended to help maintain a stable supply of products,” Calbee said in a statement, stressing that what is inside the packs will remain unaffected. ALSO READ: Xi-Trump summit: US president reaches China for high-stakes talks — Date, venue, key facts and what’s at stake Ink Shortage and Oil-Linked Materials The shift is tied to shortages of naphtha, an oil-derived chemical used in manufacturing printing ink and packaging materials. Japan relies on imports from the Middle East for about 40 per cent of its naphtha consumption. The ongoing war in Iran has disrupted global energy flows, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for oil exports. As a result, supplies of petroleum-based inputs have tightened, pushing companies to reduce non-essential usage such as coloured inks. Calbee said the adjustment reflects the need to respond “flexibly to changing geopolitical conditions,” limiting printing to just two ink colours for selected products. Industry reporting highlights that Japan relies heavily on imported naphtha from the Middle East, making its manufacturing sector particularly exposed to disruptions in the region. ALSO READ: Xi-Trump summit: Why does China hold stronger cards as Trump heads to Beijing for high-stakes talks? Industry Impact and Consumer Response The packaging change affects some of this 77-year-old company's most recognisable products, including cereals, potato chips and shrimp snacks commonly sold in convenience stores across Japan and exported abroad. The company, founded in 1949 and employing more than 5,000 people, emphasised that the move is temporary, though no end date has been confirmed. According to reports, the decision reflects broader strain across Japanese manufacturing as firms adjust to rising input costs and volatile supply chains linked to the conflict. While government officials have said overall supplies remain stable, companies are increasingly adopting cost- and resource-saving measures. For consumers, the visual shift is stark: familiar brightly coloured snack packs are being replaced by monochrome designs, a quiet but visible reminder of how global conflict can reshape even the most ordinary aspects of daily life.

Xi-Trump summit: Will the meeting bring a resolution to the war with Iran & end Hormuz blockade?

Iran is tightening its grip over one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, the Strait of Hormuz. Now, Iraq and Pakistan have reportedly struck separate deals with Tehran to secure the passage of oil and liquefied natural gas shipments through the Gulf. The development highlights how the ongoing U.S–Iran conflict is reshaping global energy routes… and giving Iran increasing control over regional energy flows.

Hormuz Crisis: Iran Tightens Control Over the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, handling nearly 20% of global oil and energy trade. Rising tensions in the region have renewed fears over disruptions to global supply chains, oil prices, and international shipping routes. As concerns grow over security in the Gulf, the Hormuz crisis is drawing worldwide attention due to its massive impact on global energy markets and economic stability.

Hormuz Crisis: The Strait of Hormuz Handles 20% of Global Energy Trade

Iraq and Pakistan have reportedly reached separate agreements with Iran to allow the transport of oil and liquefied natural gas through the Strait of Hormuz, according to five sources familiar with the arrangements. The developments highlight Tehran’s growing influence over one of the world’s most critical energy routes during the ongoing regional conflict. The US-Israeli war with Iran has sharply disrupted energy exports from the Gulf region, which typically supplies around 20% of global crude oil and LNG. Recent US actions targeting Iranian ports and ongoing instability in the Strait of Hormuz have intensified concerns over global energy security.&nbsp;According to Claudio Steuer of the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, Iran’s strategy has evolved during the conflict. “Iran has shifted from blocking Hormuz to controlling access to it ... Hormuz is no longer a neutral transit route, it is a controlled corridor,” he was quoted as saying. Iraq, whose oil exports heavily rely on the strait, was among the countries hardest hit by disruptions. Pakistan, meanwhile, has struggled with rising fuel prices while depending heavily on Gulf energy imports during peak summer electricity demand. In a previously undisclosed arrangement between Baghdad and Tehran, Iraq reportedly secured safe passage for two very large crude carriers transporting approximately 2 million barrels of oil each through the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday.&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-calls-iran-war-coverage-showing-tehran-doing-well-virtual-treason-1778623857386">Trump calls Iran war coverage showing Tehran 'doing well' ‘virtual TREASON’</a>&nbsp;An Iraqi oil ministry official told Reuters that Baghdad is now seeking Iran’s approval for additional shipments as the government works to protect oil revenues that account for roughly 95% of Iraq’s state budget. “Iraq is a close ally of Iran, and any deterioration in Iraq's economy would also damage Iran's economic interests in the country,” the official said. A second Iraqi official and a shipping industry source also confirmed ongoing negotiations with Tehran. Qatar was reportedly not directly involved in the bilateral arrangements but informed the United States before LNG shipments headed to Pakistan. Analysts warn that similar agreements with Iran could become more common as countries seek to secure energy supplies amid rising prices and shipping disruptions. Iraq and Pakistan have reportedly struck energy transit deals with Iran as Tehran tightens control over the Strait of Hormuz during the ongoing conflict

Pakistan, Iraq strike energy transit deals with Iran through Strait of Hormuz: Report

From the Strait of Hormuz to the Malacca Strait, a handful of narrow sea passages quietly control global trade, energy supplies and military movement. Nearly every major economy depends on these chokepoints for oil, gas and cargo shipments. Any disruption — whether conflict, piracy or accidents — can shake world markets overnight. This report explores eight of the world’s most strategic straits and why they remain crucial to global commerce and geopolitics.

8 Strategic Straits That Control Global Trade, Oil And World Shipping

Iran on Sunday (May 10) warned Britain and France against sending any warships to the Strait of Hormuz, saying that its armed forces would launch “a decisive and immediate response.” This comes after both Paris and London dispatched vessels to the Gulf. The two nations are leading efforts to create an international coalition to secure the strategic water, but only after a peace deal between the US and Iran is secured. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron said that his country had “never envisaged” a naval deployment but rather a security mission that would be “coordinated with Iran”In a post on X, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi warned, “We remind them that both in times of war and in times of peace, only the Islamic Republic of Iran can establish security in this strait and it will not allow any country to interfere in such matters.”<h2>Macron says ‘never envisaged’</h2>Speaking at a press conference in Nairobi ahead of the African summit, Macron reiterated his stance remains the same on the issue – opposing a blockade from either side. He had that he “reject any toll” to ensure ships are able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. In response to Iranian threats, Macron said, “There was never any question of a deployment but we are ready.”He added, “We have put together an ad hoc mission, co-led with the British, which has brought together 50 countries and international organisations to enable, in a coordinated way with Iran and by deconflicting the situation with all the countries of the region and the United States, the resumption of maritime traffic as soon as conditions allow.”Macron added that the whole continent of Africa was a “victim of the blockade” of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is the only maritime outlet for ports located in the Persian Gulf. Its blockade has significantly affected global energy supply, triggering a sharp rise in oil prices.Last week, France announced that its aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle, had passed through the Suez Canal in preparation for such an operation.Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, the US, Gulf nations and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. Iran has threatened to target or control critical undersea internet cables passing through the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to weaponize the digital infrastructure that handles over $10$ trillion in daily global financial transactions. IRGC-linked media warned of cutting cables and demanded licensing fees from companies, threatening major internet outages for Gulf nations and disrupting international trade.

The US says it expects Iran to respond soon to its latest peace proposal as tensions rise in the Gulf and the fragile ceasefire comes under pressure. President Donald Trump has indicated he is awaiting Tehran’s reply, even as Iran says the proposal is still under review with no fixed timeline. Renewed clashes near the Strait of Hormuz have further heightened fears of escalation and uncertainty in the region.

US-Iran Peace Talks: Trump Expecting Iran Response Soon on Agreement To End War

US President Donald Trump on Friday warned that Washington will launch “Project Freedom Plus” if the ongoing peace negotiations with Iran fails to reach a final agreement. This expansion will be an extended version of the recently suspended “Project Freedom” to escort vehicle through the Strait of Hormuz "plus other things".“If everything doesn’t get signed up, buttoned up, we’ll go a different route," Trump said. “I think Project Freedom is good, but I think we have other ways of doing it also. We may go back to Project Freedom if things don’t happen, but it’d be Project Freedom plus, meaning Project Freedom plus other things." said Trump to reporters in White House before travelling to a dinner at his golf course in Sterling, Virginia.Trump announced Tuesday that the US military will temporarily pause “Project Freedom” after Saudi Arabia refused to allow American aircraft involved in the initiative to use Prince Sultan Airbase southeast of Riyadh or fly through Saudi airspace, according to NBC News. US President Donald Trump warned of launching “Project Freedom Plus” if peace talks with Iran collapse, as tensions escalate in the Strait of Hormuz following attacks on oil tankers and renewed military exchanges.

US President Donald Trump on Friday warned that Washington will launch “Project Freedom Plus” if the ongoing peace negotiations with Iran fails to reach a final agreement. This expansion will be an extended version of the recently suspended “Project Freedom” to escort vehicle through the Strait of Hormuz "plus other things". “If everything doesn’t get signed up, buttoned up, we’ll go a different route," Trump said. “I think Project Freedom is good, but I think we have other ways of doing it also. We may go back to Project Freedom if things don’t happen, but it’d be Project Freedom plus, meaning Project Freedom plus other things." said Trump to reporters in White House before travelling to a dinner at his golf course in Sterling, Virginia. Trump announced Tuesday that the US military will temporarily pause “Project Freedom” after Saudi Arabia refused to allow American aircraft involved in the initiative to use Prince Sultan Airbase southeast of Riyadh or fly through Saudi airspace, according to NBC News. However Trump administration claimed that the original project was paused on May 6 to allow for diplomatic talks mediated by Pakistan. Trump warns of ‘Project Freedom Plus’ if Iran talks fail amid escalating Strait of Hormuz crisis

Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated sharply as Washington confirms strikes on Iranian-linked vessels amid the ongoing conflict in the Gulf region. President Donald Trump has warned of even stronger retaliation if attacks continue, while diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire remain uncertain.

US-Iran War: US Opens Fire on Iranian Ships, Trump Warns of Even Violent Retaliation

The United States says it is awaiting Iran’s response to a proposed agreement aimed at ending the ongoing conflict, with President Donald Trump expressing optimism that a deal could soon be reached. The development comes amid continued tensions in the Middle East, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, where clashes and military activity have escalated despite earlier ceasefire efforts.

Iran is trying to formalise its control over the Strait of Hormuz; it has created a new Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) to govern the day-to-day operations of the strait. Missiles and deals at the same time? US-Iran war and peace dichotomy explained through history

US President Donald Trump has described recent US strikes on Iranian targets as a “love tap,” downplaying the intensity of the military exchange amid escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. His remarks come after reports of missile, drone, and naval confrontations between US and Iranian forces, with both sides claiming defensive action.

Iran has reportedly introduced new rules for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, tightening control over one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes. According to reports, Tehran’s newly established maritime authority is requiring ships to submit detailed information and obtain prior authorization before transit.

The United States has said it carried out retaliatory strikes against Iranian targets following an attack on American warships in the Strait of Hormuz. According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), Iranian forces launched missiles, drones, and small boats at three U.S. Navy destroyers, but all incoming threats were intercepted and no American vessels were hit.

US-Iran war: Tehran accuses US of violating ceasefire with attack on ships in Strait of Hormuz

Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have lifted restrictions on the US military’s use of their bases and airspace after initially limiting access following Washington’s operation to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to US and Saudi officials. The decision removes a major obstacle for President Donald Trump’s maritime security initiative aimed at protecting commercial shipping through one of the world’s most critical energy corridors. Following the initial launch of the operation, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Tuesday that, “As a direct gift from the United States to the world, we have established a powerful red, white, and blue dome over the strait.” “American destroyers are on station, supported by hundreds of fighter jets, helicopters, drones, and surveillance aircraft, providing 24/7 overwatch for peaceful commercial vessels.” Iran responded to the US operation by launching missiles and drones toward the United Arab Emirates. The attacks struck the Gulf nation’s only functioning oil-export hub. Saudi Arabia reportedly became increasingly worried that Washington would not respond strongly enough to future Iranian attacks after Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine described Tehran’s actions against ships and the UAE as low-level harassment. Trump and Hegseth later stated that the ceasefire remained intact. https://www.wionews.com/videos/us-lawmaker-pramila-jayapal-openly-defies-trump-s-oil-quarantine-on-cuba-1778171909192/embed During the operation, US forces escorted two American-flagged ships out of the Persian Gulf. The mission also triggered clashes in which Iran launched cruise missiles and drones at US warships and commercial vessels. US forces intercepted the attacks and destroyed several Iranian fast-attack boats, though Iran reportedly succeeded in striking multiple non-American vessels. Tehran also launched 15 missiles and several drones at the UAE, hitting the oil hub at Fujairah. These marked the first direct attacks linked to Iran since the US-Iran ceasefire began last month. Gulf states are now increasingly concerned that Iran may conclude it can target neighboring countries without facing serious consequences. Iran has denied responsibility for attacks against the UAE but warned of a “crushing response” if any military action was launched from the Gulf monarchy against Tehran.
