US warplane fires at Iranian tanker trying to breach naval blockade amid maritime tensions

Tensions between Washington and Tehran rise sharply after U.S. President Donald Trump issues a direct warning to Iran, offering a final choice between a negotiated deal or renewed military escalation. The statement comes amid shifting U.S. strategy, with signals of both pressure and diplomacy as negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz and regional stability continue. Iran, meanwhile, is reviewing Washington’s proposal while maintaining a hard stance against external pressure.

Trump Retreats With Rhetoric in Order to Secure Deal With Iran

Amid reports suggesting that Iran may be training “kamikaze dolphins” to target US naval ships and commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, the Pentagon has responded. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed the claims, rejecting suggestions that Iran could deploy marine mammals equipped with explosives against vessels. This comes as tensions continue to simmer between the United States and Iran over control and security of the vital maritime route. The unusual theory appears to stem from older reports that Iran had, at one point, acquired trained dolphins from the former Soviet Union. These animals were allegedly used for defensive purposes, such as detecting submarines or underwater mines. However, there is no credible evidence to suggest that any such programme has evolved into an offensive capability involving explosives. While Hegseth denied reports of Iran using the mammals, he did not confirm whether the US does.“I can’t confirm or deny whether we have kamikaze dolphins, but I can confirm they don’t,” Hegseth said.Addressing the issue during the same briefing, General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, also downplayed the speculation. He jokingly compared the idea to fictional concepts like “sharks with laser beams.”These rumours surface amid escalating friction in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic chokepoint through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes. The United States has ramped up efforts to secure commercial shipping routes, while Iran has issued warnings in response to increased military presence in the region.Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump renewed threats against Iran on Wednesday (May 6), warning that if Tehran does not allow Hormuz to be open to all, “bombing” will start at a “much higher level” and more intense than it was before. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote, “Assuming Iran agrees to give what has been agreed to, which is, perhaps, a big assumption, the already legendary Epic Fury will be at an end, and the highly effective Blockade will allow the Hormuz Strait to be OPEN TO ALL, including Iran. If they don’t agree, the bombing starts, and it will be, sadly, at a much higher level and intensity than it was before.”Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, the US, Gulf nations and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. Iran training ‘kamikaze dolphins’ to target US ships in Hormuz? Pentagon says...

In a major development in the ongoing US-Iran conflict, President Donald Trump has announced a temporary pause of “Project Freedom” the US-led mission to guide commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz. The decision comes following requests from Pakistan and other countries, alongside reported progress in negotiations with Iran toward a potential peace deal.

The White House reportedly believes that it is getting close to reaching an agreement with Iran, with the United States expecting Iranian responses on several key issues in the next 48 hours. While no agreement has been reached between the two nations since the fragile ceasefire came into effect on April 8, a US media report has suggested that this was the closest both parties had been to an agreement since the war began on February 28. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump once again threatened Iran to reach a deal, warning of “intense” bombing.According to an Axios report, citing US officials and other sources, the US believes it is getting closer to an agreement with Iran on a one-page, 14-point memorandum of understanding (MOU) to end the war and set a framework for detailed negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear program.
What’s in the one-page memo?
The deal includes Iran committing to a moratorium on nuclear enrichment, the US agreeing to lift sanctions on Tehran and releasing billions of frozen Iranian funds. It also includes both sides lifting restrictions on the transit of ships through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Many of the terms outlined in the memo depend on a final agreement being reached, leaving open the possibility of renewed conflict or a prolonged stalemate where active fighting has ceased but no lasting resolution has been achieved. In its current form, the MOU would mark the end of the conflict and begin a 30-day window for negotiations on a comprehensive deal, including reopening the strait, curbing Iran’s nuclear activities, and easing US sanctions. The talks could be held in Islamabad or Geneva, the report added, citing sources. On Wednesday (May 6), Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has positioned himself as a key mediator in the negotiations between Iran and the United States, said that he was “hopeful” that the current momentum of talks would lead to peace in West Asia.
Trump warns of ‘intense’ bombing
Meanwhile, Trump threatened “intense” bombing if Iran refuses to open the Strait of Hormuz. Iran seeking ‘fair and comprehensive’ deal after Trump pauses ‘Project Freedom’

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for a complete and immediate end to the war in West Asia, and urged the United States and Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz “as soon as possible”. Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi visited Beijing on Wednesday, in his first trip to China since the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran that set off a global crisis, one of the worst energy shocks in the world, threatening the energy security of China, the world's top crude importer. Strait of Hormuz alert: US reroutes global shipping to Omani waters to avoid Iranian 'minefields'

US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary pause in the US military operation to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, as Washington pushes for a final deal with Iran. The move comes amid signs of progress in negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing conflict. While the mission aimed at guiding commercial ships through the critical oil route has been halted, the US blockade remains in place.

Donald Trump said the United States will temporarily pause its maritime escort operation through the Strait of Hormuz, while maintaining a blockade, citing progress toward a potential agreement with Iran. “Based on the request of Pakistan and other Countries, the tremendous Military Success that we have had during the Campaign against the Country of Iran and, additionally, the fact that Great Progress has been made toward a Complete and Final Agreement with Representatives of Iran, we have mutually agreed that, while the Blockade will remain in full force and effect, Project Freedom (The Movement of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz) will be paused for a short period of time to see whether or not the Agreement can be finalized and signed,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. The announcement comes after Marco Rubio said earlier that the combat phase of US operations against Iran had ended and Washington was shifting focus to securing maritime navigation through the region. The United Nations faces what US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called a “real test” as it considers a US-backed draft Security Council resolution aimed at stabilizing the Strait of Hormuz. The United States, along with Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar, has introduced a draft resolution calling for measures against Iran. According to Rubio, the proposal “requires Iran to cease attacks, mining, and tolling,” and demands transparency over naval activity in the region. “It demands that Iran disclose the number and location of the sea mines it has laid and cooperate with efforts to remove them, while also supporting the establishment of a humanitarian corridor.” A previous UN Security Council resolution on the Strait of Hormuz, led by Bahrain, was vetoed by China and Russia last month. Speaking at a White House briefing, Rubio described the current draft as restrained in scope. “If you’re telling me that the international community and hundreds of countries cannot rally behind that, that I don’t know what the utility of the UN system is, if it can’t even solve something as straightforward as that,” he said. He further argued that global powers should support the measure. He said it is in the interest of Russia and China “for that resolution to pass and for pressure to be brought on Iran, because it is in their interest not to see international waterways, including the straits of Hormuz, be closed down and cause economic chaos to dozens and dozens of countries around the world.” https://www.wionews.com/videos/deadly-hantavirus-outbreak-3-dead-several-others-currently-receiving-medical-treatment-1778014409883/embed Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, the US, Gulf nations, and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described recent US military actions involving Iran as defensive, as tensions continue around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.Speaking from the White House, Rubio said the US response has been measured amid ongoing maritime threats. “This is not an offensive operation. Iran Warns US: 'Stay Out Of Strait Of Hormuz'

The US Navy has denied a claim made by the Iranian media that Iran has struck a US warship trying to enter the Strait of Hormuz. The news of Iran targeting US warships surfaced after the US President announced Project Freedom. The US military claimed that the first commercial ships had transited the critical waterway as part of US President Donald Trump's new mission to guide stranded vessels. The U.S. said that 15,000 service members, guided-missile destroyers, over 100 land and sea-based aircraft and multi-domain unmanned platforms will be involved in the new operation. In response, Iran's military chief Ali Abdollahi Aliabadi said in a statement to broadcaster IRIB, “We warn that any foreign armed force — especially the aggressive US military — will be attacked if they intend to approach and enter the Strait of Hormuz.”“No US Navy ships have been struck,” US Central Command said. “US forces are supporting Project Freedom and enforcing the naval blockade on Iranian ports.” Iranian state media Fars, citing local sources, indicated that the warship was struck, “unable to continue its course following the strikes and was forced to retreat and flee the area.”Also Read: What is happening with Yen? Did Iranian tanker carrying oil worth $220 million evade US blockade? What we know

The United States has intensified pressure on Iran by enforcing a naval blockade that is severely restricting Tehran’s crude oil exports. The move targets vessels entering and leaving Iranian ports, disrupting shipments through the strategic Strait of Hormuz-one of the world’s most critical oil routes. As a result, Iran’s oil exports have reportedly dropped sharply, with tankers being turned back and crude stockpiling at sea.

Tensions in the US-Iran conflict continue to escalate as President Donald Trump warns global shipping companies against paying tolls to Iran for passage through the Strait of Hormuz. The warning comes amid rising maritime tensions and a U.S. push to restrict financial flows to Tehran through strategic shipping routes.
