US President Donald Trump has signalled possible military action against Iran if Washington fails to secure a favorable agreement with Tehran. Trump said the US “holds all the cards” in ongoing negotiations as tensions continue to rise in the Gulf region. The warning comes amid fragile ceasefire talks, fresh sanctions on Iran’s oil network, and growing concerns over security in the Strait of Hormuz.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday (May 28) warned Oman against supporting any tolling system in the Strait of Hormuz, saying Washington could impose sanctions on all parties involved. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that the Strait of Hormuz must be reopened “one way or another,” following recent U.S. strikes amid escalating tensions with Iran. His remarks signal a hardening U.S. stance on securing the vital global oil route as diplomatic negotiations continue and regional instability deepens in the Middle East.

Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei on Tuesday (May 26) warned the United States, saying that the region will no longer serve as shields for American bases. In a written statement, Mojtaba said that Ameroca will no longer have a “safe haven for mischief”. This comes after the US military struck Iranian missile launch sites and boats near the Strait of Hormuz, alleging they carried out the attack for “self-defence”. The attacks came despite a ceasefire between the two countries and diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

Iran, on Monday (May 25), denied imposing transit tolls on ships passing through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, saying the charges being collected were instead linked to “navigational services” and environmental protection measures in the region. Speaking during a weekly press briefing, Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said the fees were related to maritime support services provided in and around the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman. “The services that are provided — navigational services in addition to the measures necessary to protect the environment of the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman — require the collection of certain fees,” Baqaei said. His remarks came after reports suggested that Iran had begun seeking payments from some commercial vessels transiting through the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating regional tensions and growing disruptions to maritime trade. The report also alleged that some vessels were being asked to pay charges tied to security and navigation-related services. The developments have raised alarm in global energy markets because the Strait of Hormuz handles nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Analysts warn that any disruption, restriction or increase in transit-related costs along the route could push up fuel prices and strain global supply chains. According to Reuters, vessel traffic through the corridor has fallen sharply after Iran stepped up military monitoring and introduced stricter transit controls. Before the tensions intensified, nearly 125 to 140 ships reportedly crossed the strait daily, but the number has dropped significantly in recent months.

Iran released a new map showing the Strait of Hormuz under its control. The Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), which was set up earlier this month to control marine traffic in and out of Hormuz, announced that the region was being placed under the "oversight" of its armed forces. It spans more than 22,000 square kilometres, extending into the territorial waters of Oman and the UAE. The eastern line runs from Kuh-e Mubarak to just south of Fujairah in the UAE, while the western line runs from the western tip of Iran's Qeshm island to Umm Al Quwain, also in the UAE. The Emirates has described the said lines made by Iran as "nothing but fragments of dreams." According to the PGSA, "transit through this area for the purpose of passing through the Hormuz Strait requires coordination with, and authorisation" from the body.
Why the Hormuz "control map" matters
The "control map" represents a major political shift as it means that the Strait of Hormuz has gone from being a heavily contested war zone to a state-administered permit and toll regime. This change leads to a sovereignty dispute as the PGSA map claims regulatory jurisdiction over the international shipping lanes that legally fall within the territorial waters of Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). While Oman is a United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) signatory and guarantees "transit passage", Iran has never ratified UNCLOS and asserts that all transit through this zone now requires formal PGSA authorisation. Also Read: US-Iran deal signing in a few days, terms of agreement being finalised: Reports
How does the Strait of Hormuz crisis affect the world?
The Strait of Hormuz has become a major pain point for the world ever since Iran closed it following the first strikes by the US and Israel. Iran says Hormuz traffic will return to pre-war levels within 30 days after deal

Mediators believe they are nearing a deal to extend the U.S. ceasefire with Iran by 60 days and establish a framework for nuclear talks, the Financial Times reported Saturday, citing people briefed on the negotiations.

The agreement would include a gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a commitment to discuss Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium, eased sanctions, and the phased unfreezing of Tehran’s overseas assets, the FT reported.

Reports: US-Iran Likely To Extend Truce By 60 Days

A major breakthrough amid talks between the US and Iran could be announced within hours. Reportedly, the final draft of a possible US-Iran agreement has been prepared. The proposed agreement calls for an immediate, comprehensive and unconditional ceasefire at all fronts. The draft also reportedly includes a mutual pledge by both sides to refrain from targeting military, civilian or economic infrastructure, alongside a halt to military actions and hostile media campaigns.According to an Al Arabiya report, citing sources, the proposed framework also includes a mutual commitment, stressing respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs. The agreement also mentions guaranteed freedom of navigation in the Gulf waters. The report added that the agreement would take effect immediately after being announced by both Washington and Tehran. The development comes following a visit by Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to Tehran earlier on Friday. During his trip, he held a second meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. There is also speculation that Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir could visit Iran once both sides are ready to make an official announcement. On Thursday (May 21), US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also expressed optimism regarding the talks between the two sides. “Hopefully that’ll advance this further,” he said.
What are the key terms?
According to the Al Arabiya report, the key terms mentioned in the final draft include:

An immediate, comprehensive, unconditional ceasefire on all fronts, including land, sea, air

A bilateral commitment not to target military, civilian or economic infrastructure

End to military operations and media war

Commitments to uphold sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs

Guarantees freedom of navigation in the Arabian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman

Formation of a joint mechanism to oversee implementation and settle disputes

Talks on outstanding issues to begin within seven days of the agreement taking effect

Gradual lifting of US sanctions in exchange for Iran adhering to the terms of the deal

Reaffirmation of compliance with international law and the United Nations Charter

Immediate enforcement of the agreement following an official announcement by both sides

Uncertainty over Iran’s nuclear program
Despite the ongoing talks, uncertainty looms over Iran’s nuclear program. While US President Donald Trump has repeatedly demanded that Iran’s nuclear capabilities must be neutralised, Iran has insisted it has the right to enrich uranium. Earlier on Thursday (May 21), Trump told reporters, “We will get it. We don’t need it, we don’t want it. We’ll probably destroy it after we get it, but we’re not going to let them have it.”Meanwhile, a Reuters report suggested that Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has reportedly issued a directive, demanding that the country’s enriched uranium should not be sent abroad, rejecting demands made by Trump. However, a Bloomberg report, citing a senior Iranian official, rejected the claims that Mojtaba has issued any order requiring enriched uranium to remain inside Iran, calling the reports “enemy propaganda.” The official added that no new directive has been issued and reaffirmed that Tehran will continue to downblend the material.Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, the US, Gulf nations and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. US-Iran agreement anytime now? Report reveals what it says are key terms from ‘final draft’

Iran and Oman are holding bilateral talks to establish a payment system for the ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, despite explicit warnings from the US. The New York Times reported that the proposed framework aims to permanently monetise and manage traffic through one of the world's most vital energy choke points, which is shared by the territorial waters of the two nations. The US and Iran are engaged in diplomatic negotiations to end the war, but the discussion between Iran and the US allies suggests that they are not close to reaching an agreement. Since the US-Israeli war on Iran, the vital chokepoint has been controlled by Iran, which has led to a decrease in the traffic across the Strait. “We want it free,” US President Donald Trump said on Thursday, speaking in the Oval Office. “We don’t want tolls. It’s international. It’s an international waterway.” Also Read: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says 'smart' employees used to train AI models in viral audio
Service fee vs toll
According to a report by the New York Times, which cites two people familiar with the discussions over the management of the waterway, said that the management system does not include a toll system for transit, but is a service fee for providing services to the vessel. There are discussions about sharing the fee with Oman, while previous reports suggested that Oman was hesitant to this, but the recent development suggests Oman is considering a viable solution. Iran and Oman are reportedly discussing a new payment framework for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, triggering US concerns over sanctions and maritime control.

It’s an international waterway.” Also Read: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says 'smart' employees used to train AI models in viral audio Service fee vs toll According to a report by the New York Times, which cites two people familiar with the discussions over the management of the waterway, said that the management system does not include a toll system for transit, but is a service fee for providing services to the vessel. This has created a legal loophole, as under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), direct transit tolls on international straits are illegal, but charging for rendered services is selectively permitted. Iran, Oman discuss Strait of Hormuz payment system despite US warning against shipping fees

US President Donald Trump and secretary of state Marco Rubio issued sharp warnings to Iran on Thursday, reiterating that Tehran will not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons while also pushing back against any attempt to impose a toll system in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The coordinated messaging comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region, renewed concern over global energy security, and ongoing diplomatic efforts involving Iran’s nuclear programme.

Trump: No Ship Has Been Able To Go Past Hormuz Without US Nod

“From a strategic perspective, the Strait of Hormuz is a geopolitical weapon that can affect the future balance of power, international markets, and the outcome of conflicts” The Strait of Hormuz is no longer merely a maritime passage connecting the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea. It has evolved into the strategic fulcrum of global geopolitics — a narrow corridor where military power, energy security, economics, diplomacy, and great-power rivalry converge with dangerous intensity. The fact that in every phase of the US–Iran confrontation, President Trump threatened a ground attack there and then repeatedly postponed it by managing a request from some compliant state to do so indicates the complexity of the military operations there. From sanctions and proxy warfare to naval brinkmanship and drone attacks, one reality has remained constant: whoever influences Hormuz influences the global economy. That is why the Strait has emerged as the decisive factor in any potential US–Iran war. For decades, the United States maintained overwhelming conventional military superiority in the Gulf. Yet Iran, despite sanctions, technological limitations, and economic strain, continues to hold strategic leverage. The reason lies not in comparative firepower but in geography. In strategic affairs, geography often neutralises military asymmetry, and nowhere is this more evident than in the Strait of Hormuz.
Geography That Redefined Power
The Strait of Hormuz lies between Iran and Oman and serves as the only maritime outlet for most Gulf oil exporters. At its narrowest point, the Strait is barely 33 kilometres wide, while designated shipping lanes are much narrower. Massive oil tankers carrying a substantial percentage of the world’s crude and LNG are forced into confined transit corridors lying dangerously close to the Iranian coastline. Narrow waterways undermine many of the benefits of huge naval fleets, in contrast to open-ocean warfare. Predictable movement patterns and restricted manoeuvre space limit aircraft carriers, destroyers, and sophisticated surveillance systems. In the meantime, swarm tactics, drones, mines, and missiles provide coastal powers a disproportionate edge. This logic has been grasped by Iran. Tehran is aware that it cannot defeat the US Navy in a traditional manner. Instead, its policy concentrates on making marine activities politically dangerous, economically costly, and strategically unclear. Iran's relative inferiority is turned into leverage over much stronger states by the Strait.

This is the core of asymmetric warfare: limiting the enemy strategic freedom rather than completely defeating him.
Iran’s “Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD)” Strategy
The foundation of Iran's military strategy in Hormuz is the A2/AD doctrine. Tehran wants to cause disruption and deterrence rather than full maritime control in and around Hormuz. Its instruments are purposefully low-cost but strategically useful:

· Naval mines that have the ability to stop shipping.

· Anti-ship missile systems stationed on land that are concealed by mountains.

· Swift attack crafts intended for swarm attacks.

· Armed drones and loitering munitions.

· Small submarines optimised for shallow-water operations.

In narrow maritime corridors, these systems become force multipliers. Even a limited attack on one tanker or escort vessel can trigger cascading consequences — rising insurance premiums, panic amongst crews, suspension of shipping traffic, panic in energy markets, and diplomatic escalation. Iran does not need to “close” the Strait physically. It merely needs to create sufficient deterrence to make global commerce hesitate. That distinction is strategically critical. The global economy runs on confidence as much as on oil supply itself. Therefore, perception becomes a weapon.
The Limits Imposed on American Power
The United States unquestionably retains the ability to destroy Iranian naval assets over time. However, military capability alone does not guarantee strategic success. Hormuz imposes serious operational and political limitations on Washington. First, mine-clearing operations in narrow and contested waters are slow, dangerous, and resource-intensive. Even the most advanced navy cannot instantly secure commercial navigation once mines, drones, and missile threats are active simultaneously. Second, US naval superiority becomes diluted in constrained waters where Iranian coastal batteries enjoy geographical proximity and concealment. American vessels operating in the Gulf remain under persistent surveillance and within missile range from multiple directions. The larger vessels have to pass through a constricted passage where they are extremely vulnerable. Third, every escalation risks wider regional instability. US military planners must account not only for naval operations but also for retaliation against Gulf bases, energy infrastructure, partner nations, and commercial shipping. Iran’s network of regional proxies further complicates escalation management. The most important limitation, however, is political rather than military. The American public and Western allies show limited appetite for another prolonged Middle East conflict. Any extended maritime campaign involving casualties, energy shocks, and rising oil prices would generate domestic political pressure within the United States itself. The most important limitation, however, is political rather than military. The American public and Western allies show limited appetite for another prolonged Middle East conflict. Thus, Hormuz exposes a paradox of modern warfare: a superpower may possess overwhelming firepower yet remain strategically constrained by economics, public opinion, and geopolitical consequences.
The World's Energy Lifeline
The Strait of Hormuz is traversed by almost one-fifth of the world's petroleum trade. Uninterrupted travel across this tight corridor is crucial for oil shipments from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Iran. This makes the Strait extremely important on a global scale. A disturbance in Hormuz is no longer a local problem. It turns into a global economic disaster right away. Also Read: US extends sanctions waiver for Russian oil purchases by 30 days amid Hormuz tensions Oil prices surge sharply even during periods of tension without actual closure. Insurance rates for tankers rise dramatically. Freight markets have become erratic. Supplies of LNG are disrupted. Both rich and developing economies are experiencing inflationary pressures. Asia is especially at risk. South Korea, China, Japan, and India all heavily depend on Gulf energy imports. The Strait is a strategic vulnerability as well as an economic one for India. Fuel prices, transportation expenses, budgetary balances, and energy security planning are all directly impacted by any protracted volatility. Due to China's comparable exposure, Hormuz is becoming more closely associated with the larger strategic rivalry between the US and China. Beijing’s growing engagement with Iran reflects not merely diplomatic alignment but also energy security calculations. Beijing’s relative silence stems from the fact that the resilience of President Trump will run out much earlier than they can resolve it. Consequently, Hormuz has become a global geopolitical pressure point rather than merely a regional maritime passage. Also Read: Global internet at risk? Oslo, Norway: Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide has underscored the growing strategic importance of ties with India, praising its economic rise and shared commitment to sustainable development, while highlighting diplomatic efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Norway FM: 'India Has Innovative Economy In The IT & AI Sector'

India is currently navigating a severe Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) supply crunch. In California, motorists are paying more than $6 a gallon for petrol. Though separated by thousands of miles, both crises stem from the same disruption: the collapse of energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz following the US-Israeli conflict with Iran. Before the conflict, roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies passed through the narrow waterway. Iran’s near-closure of the route has since thrown global fuel markets into turmoil, forcing countries to draw down reserves and rethink supply chains. The knock-on effects are now being felt from Indian kitchens to American petrol stations.
Why India’s LPG shortage matters to California
India relies heavily on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as its primary cooking fuel, with more than 90 per cent of imports previously sourced from the Middle East. Faced with tightening supplies, New Delhi directed refiners to maximise LPG production to prevent a deeper domestic shortage. ALSO READ: Does hosting Putin help or hurt Xi’s bid to project China as a responsible global power? That decision, however, has created another problem overseas. Indian refiners have reduced production of alkylates — cleaner-burning fuel additives produced using LPG feedstock. California depends heavily on alkylates because the state mandates a unique petrol blend designed to reduce smog and meet strict environmental standards. “With India’s LPG supply constrained by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, refiners there are producing and exporting less alkylate, adding pressure to an already tight California gasoline market,” Mason Hamilton, chief economist at the American Petroleum Institute told Reuters. Reliance Industries, operator of the world’s largest refinery complex in Jamnagar, Gujarat, said this month it was cutting alkylate output and exports to prioritise LPG production. According to Kpler data, India’s alkylate exports fell to 33,000 barrels per day in April, nearly half March levels and the lowest since October 2023. ALSO READ: Will Russia’s massive ‘Power of Siberia 2’ gas pipeline dominate Xi-Putin talks in Beijing? According to Reuters, GasBuddy data showed average petrol prices in the state reached $6.14 per gallon on Friday, with analysts warning prices could climb beyond $6.50 in the coming weeks. “The more acute the alkylate supply shortfall becomes, the higher it could push prices in California,” said GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan. Meanwhile, India’s shortages remain severe, with reports of long queues for LPG cylinders and some consumers turning to the black market. Restaurants and small businesses have also warned of possible shutdowns as the global energy disruption continues to spread across economies.

Iran’s near-closure of the route has since thrown global fuel markets into turmoil, forcing countries to draw down reserves and rethink supply chains. The knock-on effects are now being felt from Indian kitchens to American petrol stations.

Why India’s LPG shortage matters to California India relies heavily on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as its primary cooking fuel, with more than 90 per cent of imports previously sourced from the Middle East. Faced with tightening supplies, New Delhi directed refiners to maximise LPG production to prevent a deeper domestic shortage. Iran said on Monday it was in continuous contact with Oman to develop a new mechanism for vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, calling the waterway vital to the world.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Iran and Oman, as coastal states, had a responsibility to reassure other countries about safe passage through the strait.

Iran Accuses Israel, US of Causing Regional Shipping Tensions

The US-Israel war with Iran has cost global companies at least $25 billion. The financial toll—driven by soaring energy prices, fractured supply chains, and severed trade routes in the Strait of Hormuz—has led hundreds of businesses to enact price increases, production cuts, and dividend suspensions.

Iran's latest peace proposal to the United States focuses primarily on securing an immediate end to hostilities, deferring complex nuclear issues to later rounds of talks. Transmitted via Pakistani mediators, the counter-proposal aims to end the US naval blockade on Iranian ports, lift maritime sanctions, and reopen the Strait of Hormuz under Iranian management.

Reports Reveal Details About Tehran’s Latest Peace Proposal to Washington

While the world is worried about oil and gas due to ongoing West Asia tension, Iran has set its eyes on another Achilles' heel, a real hidden weakness, the subsea fibre-optic cables running beneath the Strait of Hormuz. These cables carry more than 95 per cent of global internet traffic and financial data. These are not only internet cables, but also the financial transactions, military communications, AI traffic and everyday data flows that connect Europe, Asia and the Persian Gulf, which Iran wants to cut. This concern followed after Tehran warned to impose fees on firms including Google, Microsoft, Meta and Amazon for use of the submarine cables that pass beneath the strait, according to reports from state-linked Iranian media. Last week, Iranian military spokesperson Ebrahim Zolfaghari said on the social media platform X, "We will impose fees on internet cables." Iran's Revolutionary Guards media outlets indicated that the development would require major technology firms to comply with Iranian law. The country has demanded fees from the submarine cable operators. Maintenance and repair rights would also be handed exclusively to Iranian companies. Also read: 'Via Pakistani mediator': Iran responds to new US proposal to end war - Will there be a breakthrough?
Why Subsea cables matter?
Subsea cables form the foundation of global digital connectivity, carrying the majority of the world's internet and data traffic. Any serious damage to them would cause more disruptions than just slower internet speeds, potentially affecting banking systems, military communications, artificial intelligence, financial trading and cross-border transactions. Several major intercontinental subsea cables pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Given long-standing security concerns around Iran, international operators have historically routed most cables through a narrow corridor on the Omani side of the waterway. However, two cables, Falcon and Gulf Bridge International, pass through this water route, according to Alan Mauldin, research director at TeleGeography, a telecoms research firm. If the route or cables are disturbed, then the consequences would be felt at a large level globally. This includes India and Iran's neighbours, where severe internet outages will be seen. The strait is also a vital digital corridor connecting major Asian data hubs such as Singapore with cable landing stations across Europe. Any disruption could trigger internet outages in parts of East Africa and significantly slow financial trading as well as cross-border transactions between Europe and Asia.
Does International Law Support Iran’s Position?
Iranian media has argued that if Iran were to impose a fee, it would align with international law, citing the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Article 79 of the convention grants coastal states the authority to establish conditions for cables or pipelines entering their territory or territorial waters. Although Iran has signed UNCLOS, it has not formally ratified it. Tehran has also pointed to Egypt as a precedent, noting that it charges transit and licensing fees for undersea cables passing through the Suez Canal. However, legal experts note that the comparison is limited, as the Suez Canal is an artificial waterway built within Egyptian territory, while the Strait of Hormuz is a natural maritime passage.

Iran threatens to disrupt subsea fiber-optic cables in the Strait of Hormuz, demanding transit fees from tech giants like Google and Meta. Since these lines carry 95% of global data, a disruption would cause severe internet outages and halt cross-border financial trading from Europe to Asia.
