Tensions in the US-Iran conflict continue to escalate as Washington issues a fresh warning to global shipping companies. US President Donald Trump has cautioned that vessels paying tolls or fees to Iran for passage through the Strait of Hormuz could face strict consequences, including sanctions. The move comes amid rising instability in the vital shipping route and growing fears of wider economic disruption in global energy markets.

India-linked 45,000-tonne LPG tanker Sarv Shakti crosses volatile Strait of Hormuz in high-risk transit

The ongoing US-Iran conflict has severely disrupted the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global energy supplies. With shipping traffic reduced and tanker movement restricted, key fuel routes supplying oil and gas to Asia, Europe, and beyond are under strain. Nearly 20% of the world’s oil flows through this narrow passage, making any disruption a major global concern.

US-Iran War: Hormuz Disruption Hits Key Global Fuel Supply Routes

Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to global shipping companies, urging them not to pay any tolls or fees to Iran for passage through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The warning comes amid rising tensions, with the U.S. cautioning that any such payments could trigger strict sanctions. The move follows reports that Iran may demand fees from vessels for safe passage through the vital waterway, through which nearly 20% of global oil supply passes.

The United States on Friday (May 1) imposed sanctions on a Chinese oil terminal as part of a broader set of new measures targeting Iran, while warning of consequences for vessels paying ‘tolls’ demanded by Tehran. The announcement also arrives just two weeks before Trump is scheduled to visit China, a major buyer of Iranian oil. Since Trump’s first term, the United States has unilaterally sought to prevent other countries from purchasing oil from Iran, whose leadership remains strongly opposed to both the US and Israel. The State Department confirmed sanctions on Qingdao Haiye Oil Terminal Co., Ltd., alleging it imported ‘tens of millions of barrels’ of Iranian crude, generating billions in revenue for Tehran. US President Donald Trump has intensified pressure on Iran, declaring that Washington will obtain Tehran’s enriched uranium “one way or the other.” Trump also left the door open to restarting military action if negotiations collapse, escalating fears of a renewed regional conflict. The remarks come amid a prolonged standoff over Iran’s nuclear programme, rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, and growing uncertainty in global energy markets.

Trump administration pushes global coalition to secure Strait of Hormuz
The Trump administration is urging foreign governments to join a new international coalition to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, as the ongoing conflict continues to disrupt the vital shipping route. The initiative, called the “Maritime Freedom Construct,” seeks to coordinate diplomatic action, align sanctions policies, and improve intelligence sharing to secure safe passage through the strait. The waterway has become a central flashpoint in tensions between the United States and Iran, with both sides maintaining competing security measures. Trump has repeatedly insisted that the United States can manage the situation independently while also criticizing European allies for not contributing enough. At the same time, global fuel prices have surged due to continued instability in the region. A US State Department cable sent to diplomatic posts this week instructs officials to promote the coalition and seek partner participation by Friday. The cable, reviewed by CNN, also directs diplomats not to engage with US adversaries, including Russia, China, Belarus, and Cuba. The Wall Street Journal first reported details of the directive. According to the cable, the coalition will be coordinated by the State Department and the Pentagon through US Central Command. “The MFC will take steps to ensure safe passage, including providing real-time information, safety guidance, and coordination to ensure vessels can transit these waters securely,” the cable said. It added that countries are encouraged to participate at varying levels depending on their capabilities. “Contributions may include diplomatic coordination, information sharing, sanctions enforcement, naval presence, or other forms of support,” the cable said. “We welcome all levels of engagement and do not expect your country to shift naval assets or resources away from existing maritime constructs.” https://www.wionews.com/videos/us-plans-hormuz-coalition-as-iran-vows-gulf-free-of-america-1777572473035/embed Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, the US, Gulf nations, and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. Hormuz control will ensure ‘future free from American presence’: Iran

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday claimed that Iran is in a “state of collapse” and has sought American assistance to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Iran had informed Washington of its internal crisis and was requesting the reopening of the strategic waterway “as soon as possible”.

US-Iran War: Trump Vows Iran Blockade Will Remain Until Deal

Oil extended gains to the highest since 2022, surging past 120 dollars per barrel on Thursday as the US-Iran stalemate showed any signs of easing anytime soon.
The over two-month-long conflict remains in a stalemate with energy and other supplies through the critical Strait of Hormuz at a standstill.
That has led to fuel rationing across much of Asia and Africa and fears of a global economic slowdown.

Oil's Wild Moves

Donald Trump says the Strait of Hormuz is open, hours later announces it is closed, only to go back on his statement and again say that it is open. His changing stance on the crucial waterway has earned him a new nickname - NACHO, "Not A Chance Hormuz Opens," bestowed by a financial trader, according to Bloomberg columnist Javier Blas. He wrote on X, “We thought we were getting a TACO, ‘Trump Always Chickens Out.’ But so far we are getting a NACHO, ‘Not A Chance Hormuz Opens,’". The US imposed its own blockade on the Strait of Hormuz after talks with Iran failed. Tehran even mocked Trump for blocking something that was already blocked. All his efforts to reopen the strait, which Iran closed soon after the war started on February 28, have failed. He even issued shocking threats to force Iran to remove the blockade. In one post on X, he wrote, "Open the Fuckin' Strait, you crazy bastards, or you'll be living in Hell." US Central Command preparing for ‘short and powerful’ wave of strikes on Iran

U.S. President Donald Trump has escalated his rhetoric against Iran, declaring that Tehran will no longer be dealing with “Mr. Nice Guy.” With ceasefire talks stalled, the Strait of Hormuz still under pressure, and global oil flows disrupted, is this a negotiation tactic—or a signal of a deeper conflict ahead? We break down the strategy, the stakes, and the global economic fallout.

Trump’s Iran Warning: Posturing Or Path To War?

With every day the Iran conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continue, the global impacts and economic fall-out increase.
The fate of the world economy now depends on whether, and when a real ceasefire emerges, the stalemate holds, or the conflict widens.

Historic Energy Crisis From Hormuz Closure

Oil remained above 110 dollars per barrel on Wednesday as the Trump administration mulled a response to Iran’s latest proposal.
The two-month-long conflict remains in a stalemate with energy and other supplies through the critical strait of Hormuz at a standstill.
That has LED to fuel rationing across much of Asia and Africa and fears of a global economic slowdown.

Thailand is already preparing for ways to bypass the Strait of Malacca, as the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz has brought the Global economy to a standstill. It is working on the long-standing ambitious 'Land Bridge' infrastructure megaproject, a transhipment route connecting the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand to act as an alternate to the Strait of Malacca and reduce the transport time by approximately 5 days.
What is the Land Bridge project?
The Thai Land Bridge project is a massive 1 trillion baht/ $31 billion project, which aims to establish two deep-sea ports, one in Ranong on the Andaman Sea and another in Chumphon on the Gulf of Thailand. The two ports will be connected by a massive 90km corridor featuring a six-lane motorway, dual-track railway, and an oil pipeline. The port is designed to handle 40 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), which can rival most of the busiest ports. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, the Minister of Transport, has suggested that the proposal will be tabled before the cabinet in June/July. Thailand pushes its $31B Land Bridge project to bypass the Strait of Malacca amid Hormuz crisis, aiming to secure global trade and cut transit time.

This is an alternative to the centuries-old "Kra Canal", a shipping passage across Southern Thailand, which met resistance due to environmental, financial and security concerns. The project is still in the consideration phase, a previous attempt failed due to resistance, environmental concerns and domestic instability. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, the Minister of Transport, has suggested that the proposal will be tabled before the cabinet in June/July. They are seeking investors now, potentially from Singapore, and will allow tender in Q3 2026, with development commencing in late 2026. "He sees it as an economic opportunity for Thailand and for foreign investors, if the project can be successfully pushed forward," said Thai government spokesperson Rachada Dhanadirek, referring to Chan Chun Sing, the defence minister of Singapore. Iran proposes a new deal to the United States: open the Strait of Hormuz first, delay nuclear talks, amid blockade, war tensions, and a Donald Trump review meeting

Explained: Iran FM's new proposal to US and why Hormuz comes first amid ongoing tensions

A critical deadline is approaching for Donald Trump as questions grow over the legality of any prolonged military action against Iran. Under the US Constitution, the power to declare war rests with Congress—not the president. If operations extend beyond May 1, lawmakers could step in, setting up a potential clash over war powers. Here’s what’s at stake and why it matters.
