Shreyas Iyer's inclusion in India's squad for the World Cup led to some eyebrows being raised as the batter had not played in the Asia Cup due to 'back spasms' despite returning from an injury. The BCCI, however, continued to show faith in the batsman and Iyer repaid it with a brilliant century in the second ODI against Australia in Indore.

Batting at number three, Iyer smashed 105 off just 90 balls while adding 200 runs with Shubman Gill for the second wicket as India amassed 399/5 in 50 overs - their highest score in ODIs against Australia. Speaking about his performance, Iyer said that he always believed in his abilities and would thank himself for the innings.

“It was definitely a roller coaster ride. I would like to thank myself, to be honest. For believing in my abilities and mindset at that point of time. I was feeling a bit lonely but thanks to my physios, my trainers, my family they backed me, grateful to have them around,” Iyer told reporters after his Player-of-the-Match innings.

“I was desperate to come back and come back strong. I was waiting to convert the starts which I got in the previous games. Today I got the opportunity, I am grateful,” said Iyer.

“To be honest I was not doubting my abilities because I knew I was batting brilliantly in the nets, also the start I got against Pakistan. Just a matter of one inning and I knew it was around the corner, thankfully I was able to execute,” he added.

India lead the three-match series 2-0 and the third ODI will be played on September 27 in Rajkot.

Shreyas Iyer 'thanks himself' for century in Indore ODI against Australia

Twin centuries from Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer and a successive ODI fifty by Suryakumar Yadav propelled India to their highest inning total against Australia in this format – 399 for five. The second ODI in Indore witnessed several records getting broken, with opener Gill surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar in an elite list. With India already leading 1-0 in the three-match series, this total will work as an extra cushion for them to gain an advantage and go for the series win.

Asked to bat first, India made light work of the second-string Aussie bowling line-up, with Gill being the aggressor. Josh Hazlewood’s first ODI in India in the lead-up to the World Cup saw him breaking the opening stand, dismissing Ruturaj Gaikwad on just eight. What followed next brought the Australian Team to their knees.

With all to play for, given what was at stake, Shreyas Iyer took the onus on himself and attacked from the word go. His exploits were enough to keep the visitors at bay, as alongside Gill, the pair stitched a 200-run stand.&nbsp;

While Iyer completed his third ODI hundred, his first since returning to the setup following a lengthy injury layoff, Gill, the batter on song, struck his fourth hundred in India this calendar year, surpassing legendary Sachin Tendulkar on the list. With this, Gill also completed his fifth ODI century in 2023.

After Australia managed to pick their wickets, Captain KL Rahul and keeper-batter Ishan Kishan carried forward the momentum. Kishan scored a quickfire 31 off 18 balls before falling to Adam Zampa.&nbsp;

<h2>Time for SKY to shine</h2>

Suryakumar Yadav, India’s best T20I batter, has come off brilliant with the bat in this ongoing ODI series, hitting two back-to-back fifties. While the one in Mohali helped India chase the target with five wickets in hand, this one in Indore broke all the shackles and narratives of him being unable to deliver in the 50-over format.&nbsp;

Against Cameron Green during the fag end of the innings, SKY produced his best hitting, smashing him for four consecutive sixes.

Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer hit tons in Indore as India register their highest score against Australia in ODIs

The Indian Cricket Team is closing in on announcing their final 15 for the home World Cup, starting October 5, but they wish to tick off some boxes before that. Following India’s impressive five-wicket win over Australia in the first of the three ODIs in Mohali on Friday, the team management has their eyes set on two players – Shreyas Iyer and Ravichandran Ashwin, whom they wish to see performing in the second ODI in Indore on Sunday.

On a good flat deck in Mohali, the returning Shreyas Iyer failed to leave any impact, getting out cheaply (run-out) on just three.&nbsp;

With a lack of runs, his chances of breaking into the final XI for India’s first game against Australia in CWC look bleak, considering how well Ishan Kishan grabbed the opportunity in Iyer’s absence in the games before.

Spin veteran Ravi Ashwin will also be under pressure to deliver on a high-scoring surface in Indore as his numbers on his return game in the ODI jersey weren’t as effective. Should Axar Patel remain injured and unavailable, Ashwin will be in line to earn a shocking call-up.&nbsp;

The young prodigy Washington Sundar, who was called up at the last moment ahead of the Asia Cup final, is also in contention for that spot in the side for the World Cup.

Before India and Australia play their best XI in the third and final ODI in Rajkot (on Wednesday, September 27), both Ashwin and Sundar are likely to be tested in Indore.&nbsp;

Shardul Thakur, who leaked 78 runs in the first ODI, will be under pressure to perform and better his numbers in the remaining two games to ensure he still starts ahead of Mohammed Shami in the World Cup 2023, as the team management indicated earlier.

With all three finger spinners, including Ravindra Jadeja, likely to start in Indore, ace spinner Kuldeep Yadav could be rested.&nbsp;

India might also rest Jasprit Bumrah and bring in Asia Cup final hero Mohammed Siraj to share the new ball with Mohammed Shami in the second ODI.

<h2>Team management happy with SKY’s 50</h2>

Having backed India’s numero uno T20I batter, Suryakumar Yadav, in the ODIs, the move paid dividends as the right-handed batter scored a fifty in Mohali and helped India come out of a crunch situation during the middle orders. As per the latest reports, the management is said to have given SKY a good 50-ball window to play and settle down, which he made great use of.

His inning in Mohali has given confidence to him and the management heading into the World Cup 2023.

India lead the three-match series 1-0.

Pressure on Shreyas Iyer, Ravichandran Ashwin to deliver in Indore ODI as India look to seal CWC final 15

Former India opening batsman Gautam Gambhir wants Shreyas Iyer replaced from India's OD World Cup squad. The comments from Gambhir come after Iyer, who returned to the ODI fold in the Asia Cup, could play just one game in the tournament before being sidelined due to a back spasm. While India managed to win the trophy, Iyer's injury is not ideal for the team ahead of the quadrennial tournament.

"It is a concern. You were out for such a lengthy time and then you return for the Asia Cup, play one match and then again become unfit. I don't think after this team management will pick up him for such a big tournament. You will see in the coming days that Iyer won't be part of the World Cup squad and someone will be replacing him. You should always go into a World Cup with fit players.&nbsp;

"Performance is a different thing. Imagine if a player suffers from a spasm or some other thing then you cannot find a replacement. So if Iyer hasn't been fit in this tournament then it is very difficult for him to be part of the World Cup because of his injury and then we don't even know how is form is presently. Whatever his form was, it was 7-8 months back after which he only played in one game. So it is unfortunate," Gambhir said during a conversation on Star Sports.

Apart from Iyer, KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah also returned to the side following an injury lay-off and did brilliantly well whenever picked up in the Playing XI. India skipper Rohit Sharma said after the Asia Cup final that Iyer is fit and will return to the side for the three-match ODI series against Australia which starts September 22.

India will also play two warm-up games after the Australia ODIs before starting their ODI World Cup campaign against Australia on October 8.

'Someone will be replacing him,' says Gautam Gambhir on Shreyas Iyer's ODI World Cup squad spot

Following India’s greatest Asia Cup win in Colombo, Captain Rohit Sharma provided the latest update on the injury status of Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel. While Iyer remained out of contention since appearing in the first game against Pakistan on September 2 due to back spasms, all-rounder Patel got ruled out of the final after he tore his quadriceps during the Bangladesh tie in Super Four.

Talking about Iyer, Rohit revealed the middle-order batter is 99% fit, but because he didn't tick off some parameters ahead of the final, he wasn’t included in the XI for the summit clash. Rohit added Iyer has recovered and will return to the side for the Australia series beginning September 22.

"I know what's happening with Shreyas. He was not available for this game [the final]. There were certain parameters that were kept for him to tick off. I think today he completed most of it. I would say 99% he should be okay as of now. But he looks good. He batted, he fielded for long hours before we came today, and he was on the ground. So he's looking good at this point in time. So I don't think it's a worry for us," Rohit said during the post-match presentation.

When asked about Axar Patel, Rohit said it's a matter of ten days or so before he attains full fitness. With September 28 kept as a deadline date for all teams to list out their final CWC 2023 squad, India has about 11 days to take a call on Patel’s future.

Rohit also confirmed for at least the first two ODIs against Australia, Axar will remain out of contention for selection.

"Axar... I'm not sure. You know he had a small tear. Looks like maybe a week or 10 days, I don't know," Rohit said.

"We just have to wait and see how that injury progresses. Because every individual is different, some guys recover quickly. I'm hoping with Axar that's the case. We'll wait and see what happens with him. I'm not too sure whether he'll be okay to play against Australia in the first two games at home. But we'll wait and see,” the Indian captain added.

Meanwhile, for the final, Washington Sundar joined the Indian Team, travelling straight from Bengaluru, where he was attending the camp for the Asian Games. Sundar was straightaway roped into the XI in place of Patel, given the history of Colombo pitch assisting the spinners.

"Honestly, that injury to Axar happened very late in the night, and then we had to call a few guys to see where they're at. Washy was available, so we had to get him to come in and play the role and perform the job for us. Luckily, he was with the squad for the Asian Games in Bangalore. He was training, he was bowling. He was cricket-fit, he was spending a lot of time on the field. So we had to get him,” Rohit added.

Rohit Sharma drops latest update on Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel as India get ready for Aussie series

Team India will rest several first-team players against Bangladesh in their last Asia Cup Super Four tie on Friday, September 15. The Men in Blue were the first team to qualify for the Asia Cup final after beating Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Against Bangladesh in the dead rubber in Colombo, India could rest seamers, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, bringing in Mohammed Shami and Prasidh Krishna in their place.

The latest reports suggest that vice-captain Hardik Pandya could also be rested while bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur could return for his third game match of Asia Cup 2023.&nbsp;

Though none of the top three - Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli is likely to make way for anyone, chances of watching non-regular faces in the middle order in this game are higher.

KL Rahul, who returned to the ODI XI for the first time since March this year, scored a hundred against Pakistan in the previous game, while Kishan also pressed his case for a spot in the side as the World Cup approaches. Besides them, Shreyas Iyer, who sweat it out in the nets in the additional session on Thursday in Colombo, might not get included in the XI due to his fitness.

In this case, if the management decides to rest both KL and Kishan, star T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav and debutant Tilak Varma could be seen taking care of middle-order duties.&nbsp;

While SKY, as most of Suryakumar fans call him, has received backing from several former cricketers over straightaway breaking into the XI during the mega event, he would love to bank on it and convert it into a star performance.

It could also mean that Tilak Varma, the future superstar, could begin his ODI journey on a grand stage like the Asia Cup.&nbsp;

<h2>Benched players to be tried</h2>

While Shami and Krishna are likely to get a game against Bangladesh, the star performer in the bowling department - Kuldeep Yadav, will retain his place in the XI alongside Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, both of whom played against Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, India will face the winner of the Sri Lanka vs. Pakistan match in Super Four in Colombo in the final on September 17.

Asia Cup 2023: Bumrah, Pandya to be rested for Bangladesh game, Tilak Varma likely to debut - Reports

From suffering back-related issues since March this year to recovering and returning in time for the Asia Cup 2023 to again getting back spasms ahead of the marquee clash against Pakistan in the Super Four, India batter Shreyas Iyer has gone through a lot. Now, ahead of India's last Asia Cup Super-Four tie against Bangladesh on Friday in Colombo, Iyer looked comfortable in the optional training session for selected players, indicating his much-anticipated return to the XI.

Given injuries to several top players in the lead-up to two multi-team tournaments, be it Iyer, KL Rahul, and Jasprit Bumrah, India couldn't field its best XI yet. Now, with Iyer showing no signs of discomfort while playing in the nets, chances of him returning for the Bangladesh game and the final are high and will give India an edge over their opponents.

Iyer was among the few players - Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav, alongside the coaching staff that organised an additional training camp in Colombo on the eve of the India-Bangladesh match.&nbsp;

After doing jogging and stretching earlier, Iyer faced underarm and quick throwdowns in the nets before taking on the net bowlers. From hitting soothing drives to playing backfoot shots, Iyer sweated hard and made the most of this session.&nbsp;

Batting coach Vikram Rathore also applauded Iyer as he inched closer to sealing his spot in the XI with each shot in the nets.

<h2>India preparing surprise factor for crucial ties</h2>

Meanwhile, considering how well spinners have fared in Colombo, having an additional option under the sleeve would not be a bad option for any captain. Also, with India already qualifying for the Asia Cup final, they can rest some players and bring in newcomers like Tilak Varma, who can bat and offer off-spin bowling for the Bangladesh game.

Speaking on the same lines, the bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, who worked with Tilak since the Under-19 days, said with him bowling some spin in this additional training session, the decision makers can look into playing him at some point if required.

"We have been working with Tilak since the Under-19 days," Mhambrey said after training. "I felt that when we had gone to South Africa for Under-19 (World Cup), he had a bowling skill that we could definitely use, and so we have been working on that consistently."

"We are looking to see if he plays and manages to get a chance to bowl even one over, we'll start from there. If we can look at that and gain confidence from his bowling, the captain will have an option."

"In case we need an extra spinner given the circumstances - based on conditions or opposition batters - especially if there are left-handers and you need an offspinner, we need an option to go to. So, we are working with him on his bowling," the bowling coach added.

Asia Cup: Shreyas Iyer looks 'comfortable' in nets following latest jolt as India gear up for Bangladesh tie

India's star batter Shreyas Iyer is out of the national side's Super Four face-off versus Sri Lanka, in Colombo, on Tuesday (September 12) in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 edition. Iyer had a back spasm just before the India-Pakistan clash, which kicked off on Sunday afternoon (September 10) and ended on Monday evening (September 11), on the reserve day. With Iyer out of action versus Pakistan, KL Rahul replaced him at the last minute and slammed an impressive 111 not out in India's big win over arch-rivals Pakistan (by 228 runs).&nbsp;

Now, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reported that Iyer will continue to sit out due to his back issues. Ahead of the Sri Lanka game on Tuesday afternoon, BCCI said in a statement, "Shreyas Iyer is feeling better but is yet to fully recover from back spasm. He has been advised rest by the BCCI Medical Team and has not travelled with the team to the stadium today for India's Super 4 match against Sri Lanka."

Iyer returned to the Indian team after a long time. In early 2023, during the home Border-Gavaskar Trophy versus Australia, the right-hander was deemed unfit due to his persistent back issues. While the Indian team management kept a close watch on his recovery, he missed a lot of action at the highest level before joining the Indian squad for the Asia Cup. Iyer played India's tournament-opener, versus Pakistan, where he looked good in his short stay (14) before his back issues resurfaced prior to the toss of the India-Pakistan Super Four clash.&nbsp;

With the ODI World Cup less than a month away from commencement, on October 05 in Ahmedabad, India, Iyer's fitness will be closely monitored by Team India. It is to be noted that all the participating teams can make changes to their 15-man squad until September 28.

Asia Cup: Shreyas Iyer 'advised rest by BCCI Medical Team' as star batter misses Sri Lanka face-off

India rode on Virat Kohli's majestic 122 not out, KL Rahul's unbeaten 111 and Kuldeep Yadav's five-fer to dismantle Pakistan in the two-day Super Four clash in the ongoing Asia Cup on Monday (September 11). The match kicked off on Sunday afternoon (September 10) with Babar Azam-led Men in Green opting to bowl first at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Captain Rohit Sharma's 56 and Shubman Gill's 58 set the platform for India before, at 147 for 2 in 24.1 overs, persistent rain and&nbsp;wet outfield pushed the game to the reserve day&nbsp;on Monday.

On Monday, Kohli and Rahul's unbeaten 233-run third-wicket stand took India to 356 for 2. In reply, Kuldeep Yadav's 5 for 25 dismissed Pakistan for 128 in 32 overs to take the Men in Blue to a massive 228-run win, their biggest ODI win,&nbsp;in terms of runs,&nbsp;over the arch-rivals. After the clash, Rahul revealed the last-minute change of calls which led to him being added to the playing XI.

Rahul, who is returning to international cricket after a long gap following&nbsp;a hip injury, was not supposed to play the Super Four tie versus Pakistan. However, Shreyas Iyer -- another returnee from a long injury break (due to pertinent back issues) -- skipped the match due to a back spasm, forcing Rahul's early comeback in the XI.&nbsp;

Talking to the Asia Cup broadcasters, Rahul revealed how he was added to the final XI at the last minute. "You know once you come back from injury, it's really hard and I have had a lot of injuries in last few years so it's been very tough but when you have been sitting out for five months, watching matches on TV, you are ready to do anything after returning. Really happy that I could do the job for the team," Rahul said.

Rahul further added, "Five minutes before the toss, Rahul bhai came and told me that I might have to play because Shreyas got a back spasm. And I had not brought any batting gear, did not get my batting t-shirts, or skins. I had come only knowing that I would be carrying water and had brought only one full-sleeved t-shirt.&nbsp;So, at the last minute, the manager had to run to the hotel and get my stuff. But this has not happened for the first time, so mentally, I know what to do when I am thrown in the ring."

The Indian team management will be relieved with Rahul's fitness. The former white-ball vice-captain not only slammed an impressive 106-ball 111, laced with 12 fours and 2 sixes at&nbsp;104.72 -- but also kept wickets for the majority part of the Pakistan run-chase. It will be interesting to see if Rahul features in the playing XI for India's face-off versus Sri Lanka, on Tuesday (September 12) as Rohit &amp; Co. will be on the field for the third successive day.&nbsp;

Asia Cup: 'Rahul Dravid told me....': KL Rahul reveals last-minute call to play Super Four game vs Pakistan

At the coin toss of the India-Pakistan Super 4 meet in the ongoing Asia Cup, in Colombo, Indian fans were dealt with a major blow as Rohit Sharma revealed that No. 4 batter Shreyas Iyer is out of the clash due to a back spasm. Iyer returned to international cricket after a long gap after a back injury. So far, he got only one opportunity with the bat -- in India's tournament opener where he scored 14 versus arch-rivals Pakistan -- and, thus, was being keenly observed for the remainder of the competition. But his back concerns have resurfaced.&nbsp;

With less than a month left for the ODI World Cup, which kicks off on October 05 in west Indian city of Ahmedabad, Team India cannot afford to be unsure of their middle order due to Iyer's injury concerns.

Former cricketers 'Little Master' Sunil Gavaskar and Harbhajan Singh reacted to Iyer's persistent back issues during the Pakistan clash in the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup.

Gavaskar told India Today, "It's a worry definitely. If a player is out for 5-6 months due to an injury and then has it again within a month before the World Cup, yes it is an area of concern. Luckily, you can make changes in your World Cup team, and in case he is unfit and doesn't recover then there will be somebody who will replace him. It is sad because he looked good in that match against Pakistan. He played a lovely cover drive."

Meanwhile, Harbhajan said, "Injuries are part and parcel of the game. But getting injured that often is either bad luck or you are making a position for KL Rahul. I think getting injured at this point in time is going to hurt his position in the team as well and make things correct for KL Rahul. It is very worrying that players are getting injured again and again and it is mostly to do with the kind of training they do. So that is the question NCA needs to answer because that is where players go and rehabilitate and train themselves. And what KL Rahul brings to this table is stability in the batting line-up."

Team India is expected to provide a detailed update on&nbsp;Iyer's fitness sooner than later. However, he will be closely monitored by the team management, as frequent injury concerns will surely not help his case so close to the ODI World Cup. All the teams can make changes to their squad until September 28.&nbsp;

<h2>Rahul returns to Team India</h2>

Rahul’s inclusion in the Indian team saw Shreyas Iyer miss out due to a back spasm, as told by skipper Rohit Sharma at the toss. This will be Rahul’s first match for Team India since March having missed the West Indies and Ireland tour. He is expected to bat No.4 with Ishan Kishan coming in at No.5.It will also be interesting who keeps the gloves as Rahul is yet to fully recover from the injury issue.

On the bowling side, Bumrah also returned from paternity leave and replaced experienced Shami as Shardul Thakur kept his place in the Playing XI. Bumrah played in India’s last encounter against Pakistan in Kandy but had to return to Mumbai for the birth of his first child. His return to the side gives India a massive boost.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam won the toss and elected to bowl first in challenging conditions in Colombo. Asia Cup 2023: KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah return; Shreyas Iyer misses out due to back spasm

India batsman Shreyas Iyer revealed that he was 'nervous and had a sleepless night' ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 match against arch-rivals Pakistan. Iyer was included in the Asia Cup squad after recovering from a back injury and was included in the playing XI as well.

“I never imagined I’ll be playing in the Asia Cup. The recovery was slow and steady. I passed the fitness test one week before selection, and I was really happy with that,” said Iyer ahead of the match on September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

“I was nervous last night, I couldn’t sleep. I am super excited to play this match against Pakistan. It’s a phenomenal feeling to be honest as they are the number 1 team at the moment,” Iyer added.

Talking about how's he feeling about being in the Playing XI, Iyer said that he feels privileged to be a part of this team.&nbsp;

“We are privileged to be a part of this team and journey with Rahul sir (Dravid) as the coach and under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. The spirits are high in the dressing room and we are looking forward to this game. Delighted to be playing against these (Afridi, Rauf, Naseem) bowlers, plan is just to watch the ball and play according to the situation,” he added.

The batsman, who was on the crease earlier than he expected, could just score only 14 runs and was the third wicket to fall. He came to bat after India lost two quick wickets inside seven overs after winning the toss. The first wicket for India to fall was Rohit who was clean bowled through his defence by Shaheen Afridi. The India skipper scored only 11 off 22 balls before going back.&nbsp;

In his next over, Afridi took out India's star batsman Virat Kohli who tried to play the ball towards third man for a single but the ball took an inside edge and hit the stumps. Haris Rauf then took over the reins and took the wickets of Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill to leave India four down for 66 in 15th over.

Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya then led India's recovery, adding 100-plus runs for the fifth wicket and taking India's score past 200.

Asia Cup 2023: Shreyas Iyer returns to Playing XI; Ishan Kishan, Shardul Thakur get nod vs Pakistan

Ishan Kishan is one player everyone is talking about ahead of the marquee India-Pakistan clash in Pallekele, Kandy, on September 2. With returning makeshift keeper-batter KL Rahul out of the group stages due to a groin injury, Ishan is said to seal the middle-order slot in his absence. Per the latest reports, Rahul Dravid-led coaching staff is not keen on shuffling the top three this close to the World Cup 2023.

The Indian Express reports that Ishan could be tried at number four or five in the middle order during the Pakistan and Nepal games in Asia Cup 2023. Despite knowing what Ishan brings to the table at the top of the order, having scored a double hundred against Bangladesh in an ODI while opening the innings, Ishan will continue to fill Rahul’s shoes in his absence.

Though Sanju Samson has also travelled with the squad as a reserve player, the chances of him finding a place in the side look bleak, with team management alongside coaching staff and captain&nbsp;locking Ishan to play ahead of Sanju, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma.&nbsp;

Since the India team remains unwilling to alter the top three – Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli, having Shreyas Iyer at number four – a position at which he loved batting and scoring runs – would further provide the stability it lacked in the lead-up to this tournament.

Iyer and Rahul were out of action for a long time, but upon attaining full fitness at the NCA, both got named in the 17-man squad for the Asia Cup 2023. The Indian players attended a six-day conditioning camp in Alur, Bengaluru, working on gelling together and preparing for a packed winter before arriving in Colombo for the six-team tournament.

The Indian team, to be on the safer side, also included the Mumbai Indians pair of Suryakumar and Tilak Varma as backups in case of injuries to anyone in the batting order. While Tilak is yet to make his ODI debut, SKY failed to make the most of the chances to seal the middle-order slot.&nbsp;

Therefore, the management is now left with Ishan and Shreyas as the first options for the number four and five slots.&nbsp;

<h2>Can Ishan deliver in the middle order?</h2>

An opener in the true sense, Ishan is coming off a successful tour of the Caribbean, wherein he scored three successive fifties against the West Indies in T20Is. The left-handed batter in the six matches played in the number four position in ODIs, averages a mere 22.75, having struggled to get going against the spinners.

With the team management deciding on playing Ishan outside of the opening position, it remains to be seen how he will pull off this new role.&nbsp;

Asia Cup 2023: Rahul Dravid, team management pick batting position for Ishan Kishan as Pakistan game looms

India coach Rahul Dravid gave an honest answer to the calls of 'experimenting' being done by the team in the last few series and said that they were not experimenting for the sake of it. The head coach made the comments at the end of training camp at NCA in Bengaluru as India gear up for Asia Cup 2023.

"To be very honest with you, this word experimentation gets thrown around a lot without actually sometimes being thought through," Dravid said. "It's not that we are trying to sometimes experiment for the sake of experimenting. Sometimes there are specific reasons why you have to do certain things."

Dravid further said that the much-discussed no. 4 and 5 position players were 'fixed' about an year and half back but injuries to those players namely KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant forced them to try and rotate other players.

"Just to give you an example, the No. 4 and 5 spots seem to get discussed and talked about a lot," he continued. "It gives the impression that we don't have clarity on who was going to be there, but to be very honest with you, I could have told you 18 or 19 months ago the top two-three candidates we were looking at for the No. 4, 5 slots. It was always going to be Shreyas [Iyer], KL [Rahul] and Rishabh [Pant] for those spots, right?

"If you look back on some of the teams that we picked from 18 months ago, there was no doubt in our minds. Obviously, it's unfortunate that all three of them ended up with injuries in the space of two months. What are the odds of that happening? And I don't think we can, nobody can, calculate for that, especially with the limited number of games that we had in one-day cricket," he added.

Notably, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have made a comeback to the Indian side for the Asia Cup. While Iyer has been declared fit to play, Rahul, on the other hand, has been ruled out of first two games of the regional tournament. India start their Asia Cup campaign against Pakistan on September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

India coach Rahul Dravid answers all 'experimenting' questions, says didn't do for sake of it

Team India head coach Rahul Dravid has confirmed that Shreyas Iyer is fully fit for the Asia Cup 2023 edition, which kicks off on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan. The Men in Blue, under Rohit Sharma, will begin their campaign on September 02 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. All eyes are on India's middle-order as Rohit &amp; Co. are desperate to finalise their batting line-up ahead of the home ODI World Cup, which gets underway on October 05 in India. Hence, Iyer and Rahul's participation in the continental tournament will be very essential.&nbsp;

<h2>'Shreyas Iyer is fully fit'</h2>

Speaking at the press conference, on Tuesday (August 29), after India's training camp in Alur, Karnataka, Dravid confirmed Iyer's fitness and said, "Shreyas Iyer is fully fit, he has ticked all the boxes - batted and fielded a lot in the camp. The only thing he has missed is the game time. Looked pretty good, and it will be all about giving him more game time, Hopefully, it will come in the Asia Cup. In terms of fitness, he has done really well, has batted really well, ticked all the boxes."

However, Dravid made it official that KL Rahul won't feature in India's opening two games of the Asia Cup. "Both him (KL Rahul) and Shreyas are in the same boat. Slightly cautious approach with KL (due to a niggle, unrelated to his original injury). We are hoping he will only miss the first two games and will be available for the latter part of the tour," added Dravid.

India are placed in Pool A comprising Pakistan and Nepal. The top two teams from both groups -- Group B comprises Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh -- will proceed to the Super Four before the summit clash takes place on September 17. The continental tournament, being jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, is vital for India as they gear up for the home ODI World Cup, which kicks off on October 05, and, thus, they will be adamant about fixing their middle-order issues. It remains an area of concern for the Men in Blue given Rahul and Iyer's lengthy injury breaks.&nbsp;

Team India head coach Rahul Dravid has confirmed that Shreyas Iyer is fully fit for the Asia Cup 2023 edition, which kicks off on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan. The Men in Blue, under Rohit Sharma, will begin their campaign on September 02 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. All eyes are on India's middle-order as Rohit & Co. are desperate to finalise their batting line-up ahead of the home ODI World Cup, which gets underway on October 05 in India. Hence, Iyer and Rahul's participation in the continental tournament will be very essential. 'Shreyas Iyer is fully fit' Speaking at the press conference, on Tuesday (August 29), after India's training camp in Alur, Karnataka, Dravid confirmed Iyer's fitness and said, "Shreyas Iyer is fully fit, he has ticked all the boxes - batted and fielded a lot in the camp. The only thing he has missed is the game time. Looked pretty good, and it will be all about giving him more game time, Hopefully, it will come in the Asia Cup. In terms of fitness, he has done really well, has batted really well, ticked all the boxes." Also read: Virat Kohli shines at No. 3: Ex-India opener not in favour of star batter's demotion ahead of Asia Cup However, Dravid made it official that KL Rahul won't feature in India's opening two games of the Asia Cup. "Both him (KL Rahul) and Shreyas are in the same boat. Slightly cautious approach with KL (due to a niggle, unrelated to his original injury). We are hoping he will only miss the first two games and will be available for the latter part of the tour," added Dravid. India are placed in Pool A comprising Pakistan and Nepal. The top two teams from both groups -- Group B comprises Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh -- will proceed to the Super Four before the summit clash takes place on September 17. The continental tournament, being jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, is vital for India as they gear up for the home ODI World Cup, which kicks off on October 05, and, thus, they will be adamant about fixing their middle-order issues. It remains an area of concern for the Men in Blue given Rahul and Iyer's lengthy injury breaks. Shreyas Iyer is fully fit, confirms head coach Rahul Dravid ahead of India's Asia Cup opener vs Pakistan

India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer opens up on the injury layoff that kept him away from on-field cricket for around five months. The right-handed batter complained of back pain since the beginning of this year, and upon missing a few matches against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, Iyer played in the Border-Gavaskar series only to get ruled out of the final Test in Ahmedabad in March due to the same.

Iyer underwent back surgery in London and later returned to the NCA in Bengaluru to begin his rehab. After he was declared 100% fit, the selectors named him in the 17-man squad for the Asia Cup 2023, as he further remains in contention for a slot in the World Cup team. Currently training at a conditioning camp in Alur, Bengaluru, Iyer spoke in detail about the back issue that troubled him.

In a video on&nbsp;BCCI’s official handles, Iyer explained due to a slipped disc, a nerve got compressed, which led to the suffering and required treatment.

Though Iyer added he is thrilled to be back playing for India.

"I'm thrilled to be back. I had this nerve compression, basically, a slipped disc that was compressing a nerve, and the pain was going down, all the way to the bottom of my tiny toe. Excruciating pain, I was not able to express myself properly about what I am going through. After the injury, I was hospitalised for two days, and then I went back home, I gave myself rest for almost ten days," Shreyas Iyer said via BCCI in a video.

Asia Cup 2023: Shreyas Iyer opens up on injury layoff, says he’s ‘thrilled to be back’ - WATCH

Shreyas Iyer’s much-anticipated return to the Indian ODI setup blossomed the side’s chances of going for the World Cup glory. Perhaps India’s best batter in this format the past year, Iyer was away from cricket since March this year owing to a back injury requiring surgery.

Shreyas Iyer’s much-anticipated return to the Indian ODI setup blossomed the side’s chances of going for the World Cup glory. Perhaps India’s best batter in this format the past year, Iyer was away from cricket since March this year owing to a back injury requiring surgery. After going under the knife and following rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, Iyer convinced the selectors that he was fully fit and raring to return to where he rightly belonged. Although fitness parameters are as important as form, Iyer’s swashbuckling 199 at the NCA game the past week sealed his comeback into the Indian Team ahead of the Asia Cup squad announcement. Getting exact information on Iyer and KL Rahul’s fitness status was the reason behind the delayed squad announcement. While Rahul was declared fit earlier, questions around Iyer’s form raised concern for Team India. Things changed at the right time for Iyer, as he notched a brilliant 199 in the practice game and even fielded for 50 overs, which convinced the selectors to give him the go-ahead. "He smashed the bowlers at the National Cricket Academy, scoring 199 in a practice tie. To provide the selectors with more evidence of his fitness, he then fielded for the entire 50 overs of that match, which was held at the Just Cricket Academy in Bangalore 3-4 days back," a reliable source in the BCCI said, as quoted by TOI. ALSO READ: Gautam Gambhir vouches for T10 format, says it has its challenges but is entertaining too Following Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna’s return to the side for the Ireland series, the next question was when the batting pair of Rahul and Iyer will be declared fit. While the talk was all about Rahul, given he comes as a keeper-batter in the team, clicking two boxes, officials remained mum on Iyer’s injury status. "For the past two months, he has been stationed at the NCA in Bangalore, focusing on his recovery. It's all come together nicely for him," the source said. Players arrive in Alur for conditioning camp Asia Cup and World Cup-bound players have arrived in Alur, Bengaluru, for a six-day conditioning camp on Thursday. With a focus on fitness-related exercises and indoor programmes, the staff at the camp is keen on preparing the side for the two multi-team events. Following preparing for the two tournaments, Team India will fly to Colombo for the Asia Cup 2023 starting August 30. The Indian Team will face arch-rivals Pakistan in its first match on September 2 in Pallekele. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

How just one good outing and focus on recovery helped Shreyas Iyer return to Indian Team for Asia Cup 2023

The Indian players are arriving in Alur, Bengaluru, for a six-day conditioning camp, as the focus remains on KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer returning after injuries. Though the World Cup-bound players have joined the camp, three out of the 18-man squad for Asia Cup (Jasprit Bumrah, Sanju Samson and Prasidh Krishna) will join the team by Thursday night, as they are travelling from Dublin, Ireland.

While the onus would remain on the fitness parameters for all the players, mainly for those who returned from the Caribbean tour earlier, the camp will work towards the team bonding exercise before all the focus shifts on the preparation for the Asia Cup 2023 and World Cup.

The players will undergo fitness assessments and a few indoor sessions on Thursday. From the next day onwards, all the players will be divided into batches for the outdoor conditioning and skill-based programmes.

As per latest reports, the senior players of the Indian Cricket Team were given strict fitness regimes and diet plans. The coaching staff is said to remain mindful of players' workloads, especially the ones returning from injury – Rahul, Iyer, Bumrah and Krishna.

All eyes will be on the makeshift keeper-batter KL Rahul, who got picked for the six-team tournament in Pakistan and Sri Lanka starting next week.

While he is deemed conditionally fit, his on-field partner, Shreyas Iyer, is declared fully 100% ready and raring to go.

Though Rahul recovered from the thigh injury he suffered during the IPL game on May 1, he is said to have suffered another niggle that puts his participation in at least the first two games of the Asia Cup in limbo. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar also confirmed the same during the squad announcement on Monday.

Meanwhile, as per a word received from the NCA officials, also reported by ESPNcricinfo, the staff there is happy with Rahul’s progress but remains careful of his wicketkeeping duties, as the India star complained of soreness after playing in one of the matches organised by the NCA past week.

Focus on KL Rahul’s progress as players arrive in Alur for conditioning camp ahead of Asia Cup, CWC’23

On Monday (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a strong 17-man squad for Team India's campaign in the forthcoming Asia Cup. The squad includes KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer as the duo mark their return after a long injury layoff. Rahul got injured during IPL 2023, where he was leading the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Iyer got ruled out during the middle of 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home, early this year. Rahul suffered a thigh injury whereas Iyer's back issues resurfaced.&nbsp;

Thus, Iyer and Rahul were badly missed by the Indian team management as the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led national side tried several players in the middle order to fill the void created by the the two. With India preparing hard for the home ODI World Cup, set to kick off on October 5, the Men in Blue will be relieved to see the return of Iyer and Rahul for the continental tournament, which commences on August 30. The two will be eager to make the most of the opportunities with only a handful of games left before India's ODI WC opener, on October 8.

After Iyer and Rahul's return, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir reacted to the development and&nbsp;believes the two have to perform if they want to start in the playing XI in India's World Cup opener, where they face Australia in Chennai.&nbsp;

<h2>'It’s great to have Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul back, but they will need to perform'</h2>

Gambhir said on Star Sports, "One thing is clear; there is no front runner for a position when you are trying to win the World Cup. Form and impact are important. The players who are in form need to be picked, rather than those who are not. Let it be Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, or anybody. If Tilak Varma is in better form than someone, if Suryakumar Yadav is in better form than Shreyas Iyer or KL Rahul or Ishan Kishan, then you need to start that player. Because the World Cup comes once in four years, you don’t go and see who is a front runner or not. Who is in the best form after the Asia Cup and the Australia series, just as Rohit Sharma had said, there is no guarantee for anybody’s position. It’s great to have Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul back from injury, but they will need to perform if they want to get in the starting lineup of the squad."

He added, “I will only look at the form, not the name. Because if you want to win the World Cup, only form and impact from the players will help you win. A good thing the selectors have done is picked Suryakumar Yadav in the team. Because Suryakumar Yadav may not have the consistency, but he has the impact, and the team management should find the most efficient way to use him. So, in my opinion, whether it’s KL Rahul or Shreyas Iyer or anybody, we will look at their form after the Asia Cup and which team plays in the Australia series. That series will determine who plays in the World Cup rather than deciding after the series is over, that who will play in the World Cup. Because there should be a series before the World Cup where your main squad plays together.”

Great to have them back but they need to perform: Gambhir on Rahul, Iyer's comeback for Asia Cup

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the India squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. The regional tournament will be played in a 50-over format as a precursor to the ICC ODI World Cup which starts on October 5.

India were battling quite a few injury issues but the players, namely KL, Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah, have returned to fitness to be part of the India squad. While Iyer and Rahul will be making a comeback for the first time since injury, Bumrah is already playing against Ireland in T20Is as the captain.

Commenting on the squad and much-debated number 4 position, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly said that there are enough options in the squad and anyone can play at the position.

"No. 4 is just a number, anyone can fit in," Ganguly said at an event in Mumbai. "I really don't think that anybody is born as an opener or No. 3 or No. 4. I had started in the middle order in one-day cricket and was asked to open when Sachin [Tendulkar] was the captain. Sachin also started at No. 6; when he opened, he became a world-class player.

"So anybody can play at No. 4. There's Virat Kohli for No. 4; there's Shreyas Iyer once he does well at the Asia Cup; there's KL Rahul. India has enormous talent."

Ganguly also opined that one position does not make much of a difference and all India need to do is select a player and stick with him at number 4.

"One batting slot doesn't make so much of a difference because you don't win a World Cup just with No. 4. There's no hard and fast rule that you need someone at No. 4, all you need to do is decide and let them play [at that position]," said the former BCCI chief.

The Asia Cup, which starts August 30, will be followed by the ODI World Cup and the current squad is expected to play in the ICC mega event, provided there are no injuries.

Also Read: KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer return as India name 17-man squad for Asia Cup 2023 "No. India has enormous talent." Ganguly also opined that one position does not make much of a difference and all India need to do is select a player and stick with him at number 4. Sourav Ganguly brushes aside no. 4 debate after Asia Cup squad announcement, says 'anyone can play'

The wait for India’s Asia Cup 2023 squad could finally come to an end on Monday, August 21 according to the latest reports from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It is expected that skipper Rohit Sharma will attend the selection meeting in New Delhi on Monday. The board is also expecting positive news on the fitness&nbsp;of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who have been rehabilitating at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

<h2>Rahul, Iyer fit?</h2>

The much-anticipated team announcement for the Asia Cup has been delayed due to the medical reports of Iyer and Rahul. The duo was not at a hundred per cent at the start of the week and could have missed out in the final selection, however, a good four-five days recovery period has boosted their chances of a return to the team. The BCCI wanted both the players to be match-fit before announcing&nbsp;the squad.

As things stand, the selection panel led by former pacer Ajit Agarkar will discuss with skipper Rohit before opting to include the duo. According to reports, both Iyer and Rahul are expected to make the 15-member squad (or extended) and will travel to Sri Lanka.

Players like Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan along with skipper Rohit are guaranteed to make the squad. Ishan is expected to be the backup option as a wicketkeeper if the team management decides to play Rahul as first-choice keeper. Shardul Thakur will also make the squad as back-up to Hardik Pandya.

<h2>Who could miss out?</h2>

Sanju Samson looks to be the biggest name likely to be omitted if Rahul makes the squad, while the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma would also have to leave the national team set-up with the competition for places in the team. The major talking point for the selectors will be the use of extra spinner as India have three frontline spinners in their ranks.

As things stand, all three spinners – Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel have a strong case to make the squad. With a lack of left-handers in the squad and batting ability as plus, Axar is almost guaranteed to be in the squad. This could mean, India could either take one extra spinner or risk dropping either Kuldeep or Chahal.

Asia Cup 2023: Rohit Sharma to attend selection meeting in Delhi on Aug 21; Rahul, Iyer likely to return

Jasprit Bumrah will lead a second-string&nbsp;Indian team in the three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, with the series opener on Friday (August 18). However, the main focus is already on the forthcoming 50-over Asia Cup, which kicks off on August 30 (to be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka). The continental tournament will be an ideal dress rehearsal for Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. for the home ODI World Cup which commences on October 5 in Ahmedabad. At present, most are awaiting the start of the Asia Cup with the Indian&nbsp;squad likely to be announced on August 20.

Before India's official squad announcement, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh picked his 15-man Indian team for the multi-nation tournament. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the veteran firstly spoke at length on India's tour of West Indies -- where they lost the five T20Is -- and then shifted focus to the Asia Cup.&nbsp;

Harbhajan said, "I thought India would win that series easily (the WI T20Is, which Hardik Pandya &amp; Co. lost 2-3). But the result has left many shocked and concerned. I was taken aback as well because West Indies, a team that did not make the World Cup, beat us. This indeed is a big achievement for West Indies, but a major concern for India. Yes, Kohli and Rohit weren't there, and they won't stay for long, but this young brigade that had toured West Indies has learned a lot from this. I previously said that India can make 2-3 teams, and they still can, but the results are yet to reflect."

Bhajji then shifted focus to the Asia Cup and picked his 15, including 'proven player' KL Rahul, but his list didn't include Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer. Both Iyer and Rahul are nearing full fitness at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru.&nbsp;However, there are more positive developments with regard to the latter's fitness. On Rahul, Harbhajan said, "He is a proven player and if you want to see him in the World Cup squad, this is the right time to bring him back."

The former off-spinner's list didn't comprise Samson either, who averages 55.71 in ODIs. Instead, he went ahead with Suryakumar Yadav who has averaged&nbsp;less than 12 in the last nine innings in the format. Moreover, he backed&nbsp;Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal as India's spin-bowling options and added Tilak Verma in the mix as well.

India open their campaign on September 02 versus Pakistan in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. They are placed in Group A along with the Men in Green and Nepal.

No Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer! Harbhajan Singh names his India squad for Asia Cup 2023

KL Rahul is nearing full fitness at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru. Ahead of the Asia Cup squad announcement, the Indian team management is keenly awaiting the final fitness report of Rahul as well as Shreyas Iyer as their middle-order woes continue. While reports have been positive with regard to Rahul's fitness, it remains to be seen if he makes the squad for the upcoming continental tournament, starting on August 30.

While there is no doubt that India desperately need both Rahul and Iyer back in the squad, ex-Indian head coach Ravi Shastri doesn't want the former to speed up&nbsp;his return for the Asia Cup, to be jointly hosted by&nbsp;Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Shastri feels it might not be fair on Rahul to return in the multi-nation tournament and also don the gloves.

Speaking on Star Sports' Selection Day show, Shastri opined, "See when when you're talking of a player (KL Rahul) who's not played and is recovering from injury. To think of him in the XI of the Asia Cup, you're asking a little too much of the player himself. And then you're talking keeping. When a guy comes from an injury, the range of movement and things of that sort, so that's a no no."

Thus, Shastri feels India can opt for Ishan Kishan's services, an attacking left-hander who can play at the top or in the middle and keep wickets instead of rushing for Rahul's return. Rohit Sharma-led India are yet to announce the squad for the mega event, where they open their campaign on September 2 versus Pakistan. The seven-time winners are placed in Group A with Pakistan and Nepal.

Should nearly-fit KL Rahul be a part of India's XI in Asia Cup 2023? Ravi Shastri shares his take

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been keeping a close eye on the progress of Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul as the duo enters the final phase of their rehabilitation. It is thought that the selectors'&nbsp;panel wants a final medical report of the duo before announcing the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023. Both Rahul and Iyer are likely to make the squad for the continental showpiece (if fit) that starts on August 30.

<h2>BCCI’s stance on Rahul, Iyer</h2>

"Keeping 50 overs in Sri Lankan heat would take a toll and NCA can only give him (Rahul) fit certificate if he is able to don the big gloves without any apparent discomfort. Also, they haven't played anything and the first international game against Pakistan (on September 2) could be a bit too much of a pressure. But then time is of the essence," a BCCI source tracking the developments said.

India are sweating on the fitness of both Rahul and Iyer as they face a race against time to be fit for the Asia Cup. Iyer missed the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season while Rahul did not feature in the final phase of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) season. Both are recovering at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore.

If everything goes right, the selectors' panel led by Ajit Agarkar is likely to announce the 15-member squad before the weekend. Both Iyer and Rahul will only make the team if deemed fit or else Ishan Kishan will continue as the first-choice wicketkeeper and will keep gloves. Iyer’s situation is also straightforward.&nbsp;If he is fit, he will come at Sanju Samson’s expense and will play at number four. If this is not the case, Samson will continue to feature in the 15-member squad.

It is also thought that the board members are keeping tabs on Prithvi Shaw as he continues to impress in the UK’s One Day Cup. However, he is not part of the plans for the Asia Cup or the World Cup.

India will start their Asia Cup 2023 campaign against Pakistan on Sunday, August 3.

Asia Cup 2023: BCCI's stance on Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul revealed as deadline for squad selection nears

The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 (CWC '23) edition is not even two months away. The mega event will be held in India and, thus, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. are one of the favourites to lift the coveted title. After all, the last three editions have been won by the hosts. India, under MS Dhoni, started this trend in 2011 when the cricket-crazy country co-hosted the ODI World Cup (ODI WC) along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Back then, the Men in Blue trounced Sri Lanka in the summit clash by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai to lift the title.

Will Rohit-led Men in Blue replicate Dhoni &amp; Co.'s heroics? Well, India do have the arsenal but still lag behind in many areas. The No. 4 spot continues to be a worry, which proved to be India's Achilles heel in the 2019 edition as well. It became a musical chair with no confirmed taker. This time around, the situation is pretty much the same. The injury to Shreyas Iyer is, however, the main reason for India's No. 4 spot still being a persistent issue.&nbsp;

Since injuries to Iyer and KL Rahul, who bats at No. 5, India have tried to give a consistent run to Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav. Nonetheless, the trio haven't cemented the spot. During the ongoing India-West Indies T20Is, another candidate's name sprung up.&nbsp;

Tilak Varma, who is yet to make an ODI debut, recently wore his first-ever international cap during the WI T20Is. Since then, he has returned with scores of 39, 51, 41 and 7*. The left-hander has played the situation with aplomb, displayed a steady approach and carried out his innings with utmost responsibility and purpose. Thus, many former cricketers have backed him to become India's No. 4 in the upcoming&nbsp;World Cup. But should Team India give up on their back-ups and bring in a youngster as a wildcard entry if Iyer and Rahul remain unfit?&nbsp;

<h2>MANY BACKING TILAK VARMA AS AN OPTION</h2>

In an interaction with news agency PTI, former Indian chief selector MSK Prasad said, "First of all, we should know whether Shreyas Iyer is fit or not. So, in case, if Shreyas Iyer is ruled out, in the present scenario, one guy who fits the bill is Tilak Varma, because of his versatility, because of his ability to play fast bowling and spin bowling and also because of his ability to switch the gears as and when required. More than anything else, we don't have a left-hander at the top of the order. So all these things will definitely go in favour of Tilak Varma."

On his YouTube channel, R Ashwin stated, "This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So, will they think about Tilak Varma as an option if we don’t have enough backups? Because Sanju Samson has performed really well in ODIs. But the exciting part about Tilak Varma is that he is a left-hander and Team India is lacking left-handers. Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) is the only left-handed batter in the top 7."

Ashwin added, "And look at the spinners from all the top teams. Australia have Ashton Agar. England has Moeen Ali and a leggie in Adil Rashid. So, most teams don’t have a finger spinner to challenge the left-handed batters. That is why the emergence of Tilak is crucial."

<h2>WHY INDIA SHOULD NOT GO THE 2019 WAY AND SHOULD AVOID PAST MISTAKES</h2>

Without a doubt, Varma is one for the future (who can play varied roles with the bat and&nbsp;also be a handy part-time bowler). Just like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, etc., the 20-year-old Varma will also be a part of the national setup post the CWC '23 with India nearing a massive transition (with the likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, etc. in the twilight of their careers). However, his inclusion in the ODI setup with regard to the upcoming world event makes little to no sense. The Mumbai Indians (MI) star just has a handful of matches under his belt in the gruelling international circuit. While his start is surely promising, although in the shortest format, ODIs is a different ball game altogether. Look at Suryakumar. He is a T20I giant, however, admits to his woeful ODI returns (averaging a poor 24.33 in 26 games).

During the WI T20Is, Surya admitted to his 50-over woes and said, "We've played so much T20 cricket now, that we have become habituated to it. We don't play as much one-day cricket anymore. That's one of the most challenging formats for me, because you need to have different gears." He added, "If I'm honest, I know my numbers in one-day cricket are quite poor. There is no shame in admitting that. We talk about honesty, you need to be honest but it's even more important how you work and improve on it."

Varma's T20I career has started in an identical fashion with that to his idol Suresh Raina (debut at 20, both taking two catches each in maiden outing, first-ever T20I fifty in losing cause). However, he hasn't even stepped into the ODI fore, a format ruled by his childhood hero. India's legendary captain MS Dhoni repeatedly emphasised on the need for players to be experienced enough&nbsp;to counter the pressure attached to a mega event. Back in August 2008, Dhoni&nbsp;said, "You have to give everyone enough chances, not just a few games."

Moreover, India have paid the price for regular shuffles in the batting order during their preparations in the last World Cup. We all remember how Ambati Rayudu's name was missing from the final 15 with Vijay Shankar -- having played only nine ODIs -- getting the nod. In addition, when Shankar got injured during the marquee tournament, India backed an exciting young talent like Pant to fill in the No. 4 spot rather than relying on the experienced Rayudu (who occupied the No. 4 spot for majority of 2018). What followed was a messed-up chase in the CWC '19 semi-final where India failed in pursuit of 240, versus eventual runners-up New Zealand, by shuffling the batting order cluelessly.&nbsp;

Surely, Varma has an edge being a left-hander. However, India can always promote Ravindra Jadeja -- whose batting stokes are on the rise since 2018 -- in the 50-over showpiece event and, thus, not change their team combination drastically. Moreover, they also have Kishan who can bat at No. 4. Nonetheless, bringing Varma out of nowhere can jolt India's preparations. They have a rich pool of players but with the CWC '23 less than 60 days away, they cannot keep expanding their options. They have to shortlist a few and identify their No. 4 if Iyer, or even Rahul, continue to miss out due to injury concerns.

Recently, during an event, Rohit addressed&nbsp;India's&nbsp;struggle to book their No. 4 slot. He said, "Look, No. 4 has been an issue for us for a long time. After Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), nobody has come and settled themselves in. But, for a long period of time, Shreyas (Iyer) has actually batted at No. 4 and he has done well - his numbers are really good. Unfortunately, injuries have given him a bit of trouble; he has been out for a while and that is honestly what has happened in the last 4-5 years. A lot of these guys have got injured and you will always see a new guy coming and playing there."

On Varma, Hitman stated, "He looks very promising. I have seen him for two years now, he has got the hunger, and that is the most important thing." The 36-year old pointed out, "In him I can see, for the age that he is of, he is quite matured. He knows his batting so well. When I speak with him I understand that the boy knows his batting – where he has to hit, what he has to do in that period."

"That is all that I will say about him, I do not know about the World Cup and all, but definitely the guy is talented and he showed it in these few games that he has played for India," he further opined.

There is some time before India finalise their Asia Cup squad, which will also give a major hint of their CWC '23 unit. It will be wise on their part if they go with a limited pool rather than just needlessly expanding it, pushing towards a downfall as experienced in 2019.

The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 (CWC '23) edition is not even two months away. The mega event will be held in India and, thus, Rohit Sharma & Co. are one of the favourites to lift the coveted title. Will Rohit-led Men in Blue replicate Dhoni & Co.'s heroics? Well, India do have the arsenal but still lag behind in many areas. The No. 4 spot continues to be a worry, which proved to be India's Achilles heel in the 2019 edition as well. It became a musical chair with no confirmed taker. This time around, the situation is pretty much the same. The injury to Shreyas Iyer is, however, the main reason for India's No. 4 spot still being a persistent issue. Since injuries to Iyer and KL Rahul, who bats at No. 5, India have tried to give a consistent run to Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav. Nonetheless, the trio haven't cemented the spot. During the ongoing India-West Indies T20Is, another candidate's name sprung up. Tilak Varma, who is yet to make an ODI debut, recently wore his first-ever international cap during the WI T20Is. Since then, he has returned with scores of 39, 51, 41 and 7*. The left-hander has played the situation with aplomb, displayed a steady approach and carried out his innings with utmost responsibility and purpose. Thus, many former cricketers have backed him to become India's No. 4 in the upcoming World Cup. But should Team India give up on their back-ups and bring in a youngster as a wildcard entry if Iyer and Rahul remain unfit? MANY BACKING TILAK VARMA AS AN OPTION In an interaction with news agency PTI, former Indian chief selector MSK Prasad said, "First of all, we should know whether Shreyas Iyer is fit or not. So all these things will definitely go in favour of Tilak Varma." On his YouTube channel, R Ashwin stated, "This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So, will they think about Tilak Varma as an option if we don’t have enough backups? Because Sanju Samson has performed really well in ODIs. But the exciting part about Tilak Varma is that he is a left-hander and Team India is lacking left-handers. Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) is the only left-handed batter in the top 7." Ashwin added, "And look at the spinners from all the top teams. Australia have Ashton Agar. England has Moeen Ali and a leggie in Adil Rashid. So, most teams don’t have a finger spinner to challenge the left-handed batters. That is why the emergence of Tilak is crucial." Also read: India couldn't perform in ICC tournaments due to internal issues, claims former Pakistan captain WHY INDIA SHOULD NOT GO THE 2019 WAY AND SHOULD AVOID PAST MISTAKES Without a doubt, Varma is one for the future (who can play varied roles with the bat and also be a handy part-time bowler). We talk about honesty, you need to be honest but it's even more important how you work and improve on it." Varma's T20I career has started in an identical fashion with that to his idol Suresh Raina (debut at 20, both taking two catches each in maiden outing, first-ever T20I fifty in losing cause). However, he hasn't even stepped into the ODI fore, a format ruled by his childhood hero. India's legendary captain MS Dhoni repeatedly emphasised on the need for players to be experienced enough to counter the pressure attached to a mega event. Back in August 2008, Dhoni said, "You have to give everyone enough chances, not just a few games." Moreover, India have paid the price for regular shuffles in the batting order during their preparations in the last World Cup. We all remember how Ambati Rayudu's name was missing from the final 15 with Vijay Shankar -- having played only nine ODIs -- getting the nod. In addition, when Shankar got injured during the marquee tournament, India backed an exciting young talent like Pant to fill in the No. 4 spot rather than relying on the experienced Rayudu (who occupied the No. 4 spot for majority of 2018). What followed was a messed-up chase in the CWC '19 semi-final where India failed in pursuit of 240, versus eventual runners-up New Zealand, by shuffling the batting order cluelessly. Explained | Why it is too late to consider Tilak Varma for India's No. 4 spot for CWC '23

Indian captain Rohit Sharma admitted to Team India's No. 4 issues ahead of the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup, at home. According to Hitman, no player has stepped up and made the No. 4 spot his own after Yuvraj Singh. It is to be noted that India auditioned several batters at the No. 4 spot prior to the 2019 ODI World Cup as well. Post the 50-over showpiece event, Shreyas Iyer took over the mantle and achieved considerable success before his back injury resurfaced to dent his run. Iyer has been away from international cricket since early 2022.&nbsp;

To add to India's injury concerns, KL Rahul -- who bats at No. 5 -- is also out of action due to a hip injury, which he suffered during IPL 2023. In Rahul and Iyer's absence, Rohit-led India have backed the likes of Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, etc. as their middle order remains a cause of worry ahead of the upcoming home ODI World Cup, which kicks off in India on October 05.

<h2>'No. 4 has been an issue for us for a long time'</h2>

Talking to the reporters on the sidelines of a La Liga event, Rohit admitted to India's No. 4 curse and said, "Look, No. 4 has been an issue for us for a long time. After Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), nobody has come and settled themselves in. But, for a long period of time, Shreyas (Iyer) has actually batted at No. 4 and he has done well - his numbers are really good."

Talking about Iyer, the 28-year-old has 805 runs in 20 matches at No. 4, at an average of 47.35, including two centuries and five fifties. Nonetheless, injuries to key players -- including Iyer -- have dented India's preparations ahead of two important 50-over mega-events. At present, the national side await the final fitness report of Rahul and Iyer before announcing their Asia Cup squad, which will be followed by the ODI WC.

The 36-year-old Rohit concluded by saying, "The percentage of injuries that have happened in the last 4-5 years is massive. When the players get injured or are not available, you try doing different things with different players - that is what I have to say about No. 4. Even before when I was not the captain, I was watching no? There were so many guys who came in and went out. But injuries kept them away or they were not available or someone lost form."

At present, Rohit-led India is gearing up for the Asia Cup, to be held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka in August-September. The squad is expected to be announced sooner than later.

'After Yuvraj Singh, nobody has....': Rohit admits to India's No. 4 issues ahead of Asia Cup, ODI World Cup

Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh isn't much optimistic of Team India's chances in the forthcoming home ODI World Cup, which kicks off on October 5 between England and New Zealand. The 2011 ODI World Cup winner raised his concerns over India's unprepared middle order and feels if the likes of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are not fit in time, India might struggle in the marquee tournament, especially in high-pressure games.

<h2>'I see a lot of concerns'</h2>

Yuvraj said on the&nbsp;Cricket Basu YouTube&nbsp;channel, "I can be a patriot and say 'India will win because I am an Indian.' But I see a lot of concerns in the Indian middle order because of injuries. If those concerns are not resolved, we will struggle, especially in pressure games. Don't experiment in pressure games. The skill work to bat in the middle order is very different from that of an opener. Is there anybody there (in the team management) who is working around the guys that will be playing in the middle order? That's the question mark – the middle order is not ready, so someone will have to make them ready."

Yuvraj emphasised on the role of middle-order batters and added, "If your openers are out early, you need to build a partnership. (Middle order) batsmen are not simply flamboyant stroke-makers that occupy the crease and start hitting. He has to absorb pressure, leave a few balls, and create a partnership. It's a difficult job, somebody has to be experienced over there."

The 41-year-old former cricketer was one of the top performers for India in the CWC '11 edition, held in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Under MS Dhoni, India won the final beating Sri Lanka by six wickets and Yuvraj ended as the Player-of-the-Tournament with 362 runs and 15 scalps overall.&nbsp;

Talking about Rohit-led India, the Men in Blue are running against time to finalise their squad for the mega event, with Rahul and Iyer on the cusp of full recovery. India will open their campaign in the home ODI WC versus five-time winners Australia, in Chennai, on October 08.

'I can be a patriot and say 'India will win' but...: Yuvraj Singh on Rohit Sharma & Co.'s chances in CWC '23

Veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin feels India are preparing Sanju Samson as a backup for KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who are closing in on full fitness ahead of the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup. The Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue raised a lot of eyebrows for their constant experiments in the recent ODIs versus hosts West Indies.&nbsp;They shuffled their batting order and also rested the likes of regular skipper Rohit and Virat Kohli. With Rahul and Iyer's return still not confirmed, they even tried Axar Patel, Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson in the middle. Thus, Ashwin commented on the batting experiments and feels India are preparing backups until Rahul and Iyer return.&nbsp;

<h2>'They are keeping different strategies...'</h2>

Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, "Both (KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer) of them are coming out of injuries. I think they will return during the Asia Cup only. But who is the backup for either of them? If one of them is unable to return before the World Cup, and that's why they have tried out Sanju Samson. They also tried Axar Patel at No. 4. I think they are keeping different strategies for T20 and ODI formats."

Talking about Samson, the right-hander failed to get going in the rain-hit second and penultimate ODI but slammed an impressive 41-ball 51 in the series decider, where Hardik Pandya &amp; Co. won by 200 runs. However, Samson is yet to get going in the ongoing five T20Is.

Ashwin further commented on Tilak Verma, who made his India debut during the ongoing T20Is, in the Caribbean island. While India have lost two games on the trot, Tilak has been India's standout performer with the bat with scores of 39 (21) and 51 (41). On the Mumbai Indians' (MI) star batter, the 36-year-old Ashwin stated,&nbsp;"The emergence of Tilka Varma has made everyone take notice of him. He looked in imperious touch even on that slow pitch in the first T20I. His batting style looked very unlike for an Indian making his international debut. His game resembles a lot of Rohit Sharma. He sweats on the pull."

He added, "Generally, Indian batters won't set up to play the pull shot. They will find the answer later as they will have all the other shots. Pull shot is something they will develop. But his game looks like has a natural pull shot and sends the ball outside the boundary rope like an Australian."

Talking about India's preparations for the forthcoming Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup, in October-November, they are trying different combinations and giving varied roles to the available players whereas Rahul and Iyer are working hard to get fully fit and stage a comeback.&nbsp;

India preparing Sanju Samson as backup for KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer for ODI World Cup, opines R Ashwin

Team India is now gearing up for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. While the Hardik Pandya-led India is involved in the five T20Is versus West Indies, in the Caribbean island, the ODI regulars are now focused on the continental showpiece event as it will be an ideal dress rehearsal before the home ODI World Cup, in October-November. Before the Asia Cup, Jasprit Bumrah was announced fit and has been named the captain for the three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, to be held later this month. Now, as per a report in the Times of India, another batter is fit.

KL Rahul, star keeper-batter, is now fit and ready for Asia Cup duties. The stylish batter has been out of cricketing action since his injury in the latter half of IPL 2023. Since then, he missed India's WTC final -- versus Australia -- and the ongoing West Indies tour. With him being India's No. 5 and a reliable keeper, his return will be a massive boost for the Men in Blue.&nbsp;

Rahul has been sharing his fitness updates on social media platforms in the last few days, where he can be seen batting and keeping wickets at the nets. "The coaches and medical experts at the BCCI's National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore are satisfied with Rahul's progress/recovery. Rahul suffered a thigh injury during the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)'s run in IPL 2023, where they finished fourth after losing in the eliminator to Mumbai Indians (MI). Apart from Rahul, Shreyas Iyer is also fighting hard to regain full fitness, however, he is still away from being in contention for the Asia Cup. As per the same report in the TOI, Iyer is likely to be unavailable and can be out of the continental tournament with a back problem that persists despite surgery.

While Bumrah, and Prasidh Krishna, are set to make a comeback in the Ireland T20Is and there are strong reports of Rahul also recovering soon. Thus, Indian fans will hope for the trio to get some game time under their belt before the ODI World Cup and also wish for Iyer's speedy return.

Before the Asia Cup, Jasprit Bumrah was announced fit and has been named the captain for the three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, to be held later this month. Now, as per a report in the Times of India, another batter is fit. KL Rahul, star keeper-batter, is now fit and ready for Asia Cup duties. The stylish batter has been out of cricketing action since his injury in the latter half of IPL 2023. Since then, he missed India's WTC final -- versus Australia -- and the ongoing West Indies tour. With him being India's No. 5 and a reliable keeper, his return will be a massive boost for the Men in Blue. He will be available for selection for the Asia Cup," a reliable source said. Team India star batter-keeper KL Rahul 'fit' for Asia Cup: Report

Ace India seamer Jasprit Bumrah is said to have almost regained complete fitness and is bowling at full throttle at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. The latest reports suggest Bumrah is gradually increasing his workload and is in line to return to the side during next month's white-ball series against Ireland. Shreyas Iyer has also resumed batting.&nbsp;

Per a report in the Indian Express, Bumrah, who underwent back surgery in New Zealand in March early this year, completed his rehabilitation at the NCA last month and is now sending down eight to ten overs regularly. It is a big plus for the Indian Team, who dearly missed his services in mega tournaments and against big teams lately.

With earlier reports suggesting the selectors were looking to include the right-hand pacer in the Asia Cup 2023 squad, Bumrah's progression means he could return wearing the new Indian jersey sooner than expected. The Ajit Agarkar-led new selection committee will take a call on Bumrah's addition to the squad in the coming days.

During the home series against Australia in September last year, Bumrah suffered a back injury and got ruled out. This blow meant he missed the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia and remained on the sidelines even after that.

Though he got back in the reckoning for the Sri Lanka series earlier in January, a late reoccurrence of the strain in his back again ruled him out. He missed the IPL 2023 for Mumbai Indians and didn't participate in the World Test Championship Final against Australia - which India lost.

<h2>Prasidh Krishna also recovering</h2>

Alongside Bumrah, fellow seamer Prasidh Krishna is also out of action since the Zimbabwe series in August last year due to a stress fracture in his back. While he also went under the knife earlier, the 27-year-old is recovering quickly and has resumed bowling.&nbsp;

The fast bowler might not regain full fitness before the Ireland series but could return to the XI for the Asia Cup, starting August 31.&nbsp;

If both Bumrah and Prasidh are deemed fit ahead of the Asia Cup, their inclusion will come as a boost for the side that for a long&nbsp;time now has relied on the shoulders of Mohammed Siraj and Shami.

Also, with Iyer resuming batting at the NCA, Team India can expect a bit of relief, considering they can back someone like Iyer to take up the crucial number four spot in the ODI side and deliver on the big&nbsp;stage.
