Ryan Gosling claps back at Barbie casting criticism that he's too old to play Ken

Are you a Barbie or just a Ken? If you haven't lived under a rock so far, then you would have noticed the latest Barbie trend that has caught everyone's fancy on the Internet.

Are you a Barbie or just a Ken? If you haven't lived under a rock so far, then you would have noticed the latest Barbie trend that has caught everyone's fancy on the Internet. Filmmaker Greta Gerwig's highly anticipated film Barbie, featuring Margot Robbie in the titular role, is all set to release in the summer of 2023. The film's makers teased fans as they shared character posters of the film introducing the impressive lineup of actors that are set to play a different version of Barbie or her boyfriend Ken in the film. Actors like Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Emma Mackey, Sharon Rooney, Dua Lipa, Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Helen Mirren, Scott Evans, and Ncuti Gatwa are all part of the film. Interestingly, while actors who are playing different versions of Barbie have been given distinct character traits, the actors playing Ken are well, just...Ken- devoid of any specific traits. The posters provide a glimpse of various Barbies, revealing cast members like Dua Lipa, who’s making her acting debut as a Barbie who is a mermaid, and Kate McKinnon, who’s playing a Barbie who is "always in the splits," and Robbie as Barbie who is 'everything'. But all the actors are typically introduced as 'He is Just a Ken'. Barbie and its problematic past For years, Mattel- the maker of the Barbie doll, has been criticised for making the most popular doll in the world stereotypical. Critics have debated that the doll's appearance has been sexualised and it promotes a certain body type among young girls which is unrealistic. A typical Barbie doll has a narrow waist, a full chest, and long slender arms and legs. The doll is always perched on her toes- ready to slip into heels. When it was first introduced in 1959, it was typically blonde haired and adult bodied- inspired from a a German toy doll called Bild Lilli. Criticisms of Barbie are often centered around concerns that children consider Barbie a role model and will attempt to emulate her. One of the most common criticisms of Barbie is that she promotes an unrealistic idea of body image for a young woman, leading to a risk that girls who attempt to emulate her will become anorexic. With changing times, Mattel has consciously tried to change the image of Barbie dolls to make them more relatable for young girls. The mould of the doll too has undergone significant change to make Barbie look more realistic-thereby promoting a more positive body image. Over the years, Barbie has adopted various professions and ethnicity. We have a black Barbie, a doctor Barbie, and an Indian Barbie to name a few. While the Barbie doll has gone through changes, its male counterpart Ken has remained more or less the same. Greta Gerwig's land of Barbie The exact plot of the Barbie film is not known so far but the character posters seem to address a long-standing debate on how good an influence these dolls are on young girls. Gerwig seems to have used Barbie as a metaphor to represent the modern woman - who are known for more than their looks. Barbie has been considered an example of how women should be and so Gerwig's Barbies have various attributes and are not just sexual objects of desire for men. Notice how the men are depicted in the poster? They look brawny, and plastic and have no defined attributes. Women are typically known to juggle multiple roles in life. They have - for years- balanced both work and home beautifully while men are typically known to just achieve great heights professionally. Gerwig's sly dig on the societal imbalance did not go unnoticed on the internet. The social media trend The internet caught on to the Barbie trend almost instantly and made its own version of it- often equating real-life couples and on-screen popular couples to Barbie and Ken. In all the memes, the women were given attributes and the men were just Ken. Explained: Why is the Internet obsessed with Barbie memes?

<p>A new teaser trailer for <em>Barbie </em>is here! The Margot Robbie-starrer is a live-action adaptation of popular fashion dolls. Robbie plays the role of titular Barbie, or at least one of the many Barbies. Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu essay rival versions of Ken. The trailer shows in more detail the Barbie Land that was introduced by the first teaser, a fantasy land populated by Mattel toys. Will Ferrell, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Emma Mackey, America Ferrera, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Emerald Fennell, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Sharon Rooney, Anna Cruz Kanye, Ritu Arya, Conor Swindell, Jamie Demetriou, Marisa Abela, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, and Ncuti Gatwa also star.&nbsp;</p>

<p><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/GRyt3Ov4zz0" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></p>

<p>The trailer is set to the tune of Beach Boys' 1964 song 'Fun, Fun, Fun'. It gives a good sense of what the film would look like in terms of tone. In one scene, Ken says he wants to stay the night with Barbie, but when asked what he wants to do, he looks nonplussed. There is no 'Barbie Girl' song (by Aqua), though. Though there is "Hi Barbie!" and "Hi Ken!". You can watch the trailer above.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Overall, <em>Barbie </em>looks uber-fun, and not just because of the absolutely starry cast. The visual tone and aesthetic displayed here looks perfect for a movie of this kind. Gerwig, who has penned the screenplay with her husband and filmmaker Noah Baumbach, &nbsp;has proven herself to be not just a one-hit-wonder with Little Women after debuting with the brilliant 2017 coming-of-age film Lady Bird.</p>

<p>It is crazy, however, to think that <em>Barbie </em>will release in theatres on the same day as Christopher Nolan's Universal picture Oppenheimer. No, the respective audiences are not the same. Or maybe they might be? Today, movie buffs have eclectic tastes, and go watch all kinds of movies. Anyway, both movies have the allure of having great casts of actors.&nbsp;</p>

Superstar Dhanush on Saturday confirmed that he will be reprising his role as assassin Avik San, aka The Lone Wolf, in the follow-up project to Netflix blockbuster ‘The Gray Man’. The actor made his Hollywood debut with the Anthony and Joe Russo-directed action spectacle, which premiered on Netflix on July 22. Dhanush posted an audio clip on Instagram, in which he delivers a stern warning to Hollywood star Ryan Gosling's CIA mercenary Court Gentry, aka Sierra Six. "Six, This is Lone Wolf. I hear we are both looking for the same man. I want to offer you some advice. Stop looking. You are wasting your time. Because if I find him first, there will be nothing for you to look for. And if you find him first, then I will find you. Nothing personal," he said in the clip. 'The Gray Man' sequel is in the works, to star Ryan Gosling once again

<p>‘Netflix’s ‘The Gray Man’ had all the ingredients of an instant action classic. It’s directors are the Russos, who helmed probably four of the best films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; its writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, are the duo that scripted those films; its cast is populated by charismatic and talented film actors (Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, and our own Dhanush); the budget is an incredible $200 million, usually reserved for franchise entries or recognisable IP. And yet, it is an almost entirely disposable action-thriller, virtually indistinguishable from those genre movies that have cropped up in hordes on streaming services in the last five or so years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The story follows a rogue, off-the-book CIA agent Sierra Six (Ryan Gosling) who learns the agency is eliminating others who were hired in the programme he was hired in. He gets his hands on an encrypted USB drive, which supposedly contains information the CIA doesn’t want to let the world know. A heavy-handed higher-up Denny Carmichael (Regé-Jean Page) recruits a psychopathic mercenary Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans) and his men to hunt him down. And there I have described the plot. If you are worried I spoiled anything, the story has nothing much to spoil. The entire movie moves along a straight path with no deviations, twists, and surprises. For those watching this for Dhanush, yes he is there. For a while. He does get an action scene, but did they just hire an actor of his calibre just to make life more difficult for your hero for a while?</p>

<p><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/BmllggGO4pM" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></p>

<p>This film exemplifies in many ways why Netflix is undergoing financial troubles. It has thrown millions of dollars to any writer/director with an idea that could be turned into a serviceable film or show. Or that is what it felt like to a neutral observer. The streamer’s inflated content budget meant it could spend more than even traditional studios like Disney and Warner Bros. This formula may have worked for years, but then the company received a huge wake-up call in April when it lost subscribers for the first time in a decade.</p>

<p>‘The Gray Man’ is why Netflix should think deeply about its strategy. It should be one of the cases in point when the execs tell the board of directors what they will not do in future. It is simply a bad film. Not even a cast like that can redeem it. It is not even that you could enjoy it like a mindless actioner.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I, for one, do not scoff in contempt when an action movie hero has a firefight with dozens of baddies with little cover and still come out unscathed — well, not unscathed always, maybe they have a few bullet holes in his body, but can still walk and even spit out one-liners. I know how this genre works. But even the action in ‘The Gray Man’, while sometimes impressive, is mostly distracting. The camerawork is strange, switching to drone perspective in a way that takes one out of what little immersion the film offers.</p>

<p>I am never getting back those 2 hours.</p>

If you are worried I spoiled anything, the story has nothing much to spoil. The entire movie moves along a straight path with no deviations, twists, and surprises. For those watching this for Dhanush, yes he is there. For a while. He does get an action scene, but did they just hire an actor of his calibre just to make life more difficult for your hero for a while? This film exemplifies in many ways why Netflix is undergoing financial troubles. It has thrown millions of dollars to any writer/director with an idea that could be turned into a serviceable film or show. Or that is what it felt like to a neutral observer. The streamer’s inflated content budget meant it could spend more than even traditional studios like Disney and Warner Bros. This formula may have worked for years, but then the company received a huge wake-up call in April when it lost subscribers for the first time in a decade. ‘The Gray Man’ is why Netflix should think deeply about its strategy. It should be one of the cases in point when the execs tell the board of directors what they will not do in future. It is simply a bad film. Not even a cast like that can redeem it. It is not even that you could enjoy it like a mindless actioner. I, for one, do not scoff in contempt when an action movie hero has a firefight with dozens of baddies with little cover and still come out unscathed — well, not unscathed always, maybe they have a few bullet holes in his body, but can still walk and even spit out one-liners. I know how this genre works. But even the action in ‘The Gray Man’, while sometimes impressive, is mostly distracting. The camerawork is strange, switching to drone perspective in a way that takes one out of what little immersion the film offers. I am never getting back those 2 hours.

‘The Gray Man’ review: Russo Brothers’ disposable action thriller is a massive waste of Dhanush

Ryan Gosling shares his excitement about playing Ken in 'Barbie', 'Finally, it’s happening'

<p>Ryan Gosling is easily one of the most sought-after stars in Hollywood. He presently has some big projects in his kitty. Speculations about the actor's debut in Marvel's Nova were doing the rounds. However, Gosling, in a recent interview with 'Happy Sad Confused' host Josh Horowitz, dismissed the possibility of playing off the Nova Corps. Instead, Gosling expressed his interest in taking up another superhero character, reported aceshowbiz.com.</p>

<p>Horowitz, sharing an update from the interview, took to Twitter and wrote, "Next week my full chat w/Ryan Gosling for @MTVNews But for now, an honest to goodness EXCLUSIVE. Ryan and I chatted about the Nova rumours yesterday which he said aren’t true. BUT this morning Ryan reached out to me to say there is one superhero he wants to play…GHOST RIDER".</p>

<p>Rumours surfaced this week that Marvel Studio is working on a Nova project, though there were few specifics relating to the same. Later, it was revealed that the project would be made into a restricted television series on Disney+. Moreover, ‘Moon Knights’ writer Sabir Pirzada’s involvement in the Nova project fueled the speculation that it would be made in the form of a series.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A sequel to ‘Ghost Rider’ has been pending for a long time and Keanu Reeves was the top contender to take on the iconic role that was played by Nicolas Cage. and now with Ryan Gosling coming into the scene, it will be exciting to see who will make a cut to acquire the project, given that if the project happens in real.&nbsp;</p>

Dhanush makes Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling chuckle with candid reply on being cast in 'The Gray Man'

<p>Many are excited about the upcoming 'Barbie' movie, written and directed by Greta Gerwig, and yet many cannot seem to understand what to make of it. Sure, it has a scintillating cast, but how exactly do you make a movie on dolls?&nbsp;</p>

<p>Starring Margot Robbie as the titular Barbie and Ryan Gosling as her love interest Ken, the film is the first live-action movie on the line of products from Mattel, a toy company that is also behind Hot Wheels and Masters of the Universe.</p>

<p>After debuting with the brilliant 2017 coming-of-age film 'Lady Bird', Gerwig has proven herself to be not just a one-hit-wonder with 'Little Women'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The first looks from the movie, showcasing Robbie and Gosling, have mostly been received well, and many have been left nonplussed as to whether the movie is satirical or a straight-up adaptation meant to promote the toys.</p>

<p>Thus, despite not many having not the first idea as to what kind of movie 'Barbie' is one of the most anticipated movies of the next year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As 'Barbie' is currently in production, set photos are surfacing online every now and then. A few new photos show Robbie and Gosling in gaudy, neon outfits indulging in roller skating. It is not known if the actors are just chilling or if the shot is part of the movie.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Talking about The Gray Man, Anthony Russo earlier told Deadline, “The movie is a real mano a mano between those two great actors who represent two different versions of the CIA, in what it can be, and what it can do. For those who were fans of Captain America: Winter Soldier, this is us moving into that territory in more of a real-world setting. That’s what this movie really means for us.”</p>

<p>Joe Russo added, “The intention is for it to be competitive with any theatrical, and the ability to do with with Gosling and Evans is a dream for us. The idea is to create a franchise and build out a whole universe, with Ryan at the center of it. We have all committed to the first movie, and that’s got to be great to get us to the second movie. These are master assassins, and Gosling’s characters gets burned by the CIA and Evans’ character has to hunt him down. We have a great working relationship with Netflix, and we go back almost 20 years with Scott Stuber. We formed AGBO to be an agnostic storytelling company, where we figure out the best platform. We think Netflix is the perfect place for this film.”</p>
