The United States may have deliberately withheld advance warnings of Russian missile attacks on Ukraine earlier this week, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter who spoke to CBS News. The allegations come as Kyiv faces renewed Russian strikes and reports of disruptions to critical satellite communications technology. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine ‘received no advance warning from our partners’ before Russia launched a barrage of ballistic missiles targeting Kyiv and other locations early on Tuesday. According to sources cited by CBS News, American officials told their Ukrainian counterparts that the system used to detect Russian missile launches had failed because of ‘bad weather’. However, Ukrainian officials, speaking anonymously because of the sensitivity of the issue, said they did not believe the explanation. They accused the United States of instead ‘playing’ with the system. When Russia launched another wave of ballistic missiles at around 3 am local time on Wednesday, the sources said the US early-warning system appeared to be functioning again. The sources also alleged that the United States had failed to provide intelligence about Russian ballistic missile launches on one previous occasion earlier this year, citing the need to redirect resources towards the Middle East.
Russian strikes kill six, disrupt power supplies
Zelenskyy said Russia launched more than 39 ballistic missiles and over 120 attack drones and loitering munitions during an overnight assault on Wednesday. The attacks primarily targeted energy facilities and other critical infrastructure in Kyiv and Kharkiv, killing six people and leaving approximately 600,000 without electricity, according to the Ukrainian president. The alleged failure to provide advance warnings has raised questions about the status of intelligence cooperation between Washington and Kyiv. Asked on Tuesday whether the United States had stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine, President Donald Trump denied that assistance had been suspended. “No, we haven't. We help them, but we're really helping them get to a final answer. We want the war ended.” "We are helping them, and we are sharing intel. We want the war to end, so we're working with them and with Russia on getting the war to end," Trump said.
US reportedly threatens to restrict intelligence sharing
The dispute comes amid broader tensions over Washington's military support for Ukraine. Earlier this week, the Trump administration threatened to halt intelligence sharing and suspend the purchase of US-made weapons by European allies for Ukraine through the PURL procurement system unless Kyiv stopped conducting deep strikes against Russian energy infrastructure, a European official and a Ukrainian official told CBS News. Ukraine depends heavily on American intelligence for both offensive and defensive military operations. This includes satellite information and aircraft sensor data used to detect Russian aircraft and missile launches. Sources within Ukraine's Ministry of Defense told CBS News that restrictions had affected military satellite terminals used by Ukrainian forces. "On the night of 14 October, without warning the Defence Forces, SpaceX unilaterally restricted the operation of Starshield terminals ('military package') while in motion. This complicates UAV missions, particularly interceptors and middle-strike drones, and reduces capabilities for frontline logistics, reconnaissance and signal relay," sources in Ukraine's Ministry of Defense told CBS News. “At present, the Ministry of Defence is in contact with the United States, SpaceX and NATO partners, is collecting data from all units, and backup communication channels are being tested and put into use.”
Zelenskyy urges Washington to respond
The developments have intensified pressure on Washington to respond to Russia's continued attacks. On Wednesday, Zelenskyy arrived in the United Kingdom for meetings with Prime Minister Andy Burnham and other officials, while calling for a stronger American response to the latest Russian strikes. "The strike was absolutely deliberate and indicative in its scale — such a demonstrative disrespect from Russia toward America has never happened before. Energy and railway facilities in western Ukraine were also targeted overnight. Zelensky said Russia launched a targeted strike on a power plant in Kharkiv shortly after Trump’s announcement. He also referred to a Russian Shahed drone strike on a Ukrainian gas production facility around midnight. Despite the attacks, the Ukrainian president said Kyiv was prepared to honour the ceasefire if Russia did the same. “We agree if they agree, and we have already shown that we mean it,” Zelensky said during a video address to the Warsaw Security Forum on Monday. Ukraine had also indicated its willingness to halt attacks on Russian energy infrastructure. In an interview with ABC News on Sunday, Zelensky said Kyiv was open to the arrangement if Moscow stopped striking Ukrainian targets. Zelensky ruled out holding a vote while Russian attacks continued, citing security concerns. “From a security standpoint, that’s completely impossible. We have attacks day and night,” he said. Zelensky added that he would be ready to work towards holding elections if a full ceasefire of 60 days or longer were established. The Kremlin, meanwhile, said Putin would be willing to halt attacks on Ukraine on election day itself if Kyiv genuinely intended to hold elections.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday (Oct 11) gave a sharp response after US President Donald Trump suggested that Ukraine needs a ‘new leader’. Speaking in an interview, Zelensky made it clear that it was up to the people of Ukraine to choose their leader. He added that if the Trump administration really wanted Ukraine to hold elections, they should tell Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a 60-day ceasefire, and “we will organise elections”. Meanwhile, Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an “energy ceasefire”; however, Zelensky denied any knowledge of any such agreement.“First of all, with all respect to President Trump, it's up to our society, up to our people to choose one or another leader,” Zelensky told ABC News in an interview. He added that if Trump’s team really wanted Ukraine to hold elections, “please tell Putin to give us two months, 60 days of total ceasefire, 60 days, and we will organise elections.”
‘We count on American support’
Zelensky added that Kyiv “counted on American support” to stop the war with Russia that has been going on for more than four years now. He added that he hoped that the latest dispute would not hurt the “unity” among Ukraine’s allies.“To stop Putin – and I think this is the main goal, to stop him, this is the main deal, to stop this war ... we count on American support,” Zelensky said.“Then, and of course, we count on our European partners, and I hope that we will save this unity, Europe and the United States,” he added, noting it was “really not simple.”Zelensky also reiterated that Ukraine was ready for a ceasefire if Russia agree. Russia’s massive attacks this week showed that it does not “feel real pressure” to end the war, he said.“This week was very difficult for us, not only geopolitically. First of all, because of massive attacks, Russian attacks on our civilian infrastructure,” the Ukrainian president said. “So they attacked 196 times our energy sector, it's only electricity, plus 20 times gas and oil, and they killed, for now, 153 civilians.”
What did Trump say?
Earlier on Saturday (Oct 11), Trump called for Ukraine to elect a new president willing to agree to a peace deal, criticising Volodymyr Zelensky over Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries that he said had contributed to rising diesel prices ahead of the US elections.Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said he had told Zelensky he could continue military operations against Russia but warned him against targeting refineries.“He better damn well stop,” Trump said, adding that he believed “it's time for Ukraine to get a new president” who would agree to end the war.

Trump claims ‘energy ceasefire’ between Russia and Ukraine; Zelensky says ‘news for me’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday (Oct 11) said that Kyiv is ready to stop strikes on Russian oil refineries if Moscow halts strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. In a post on X, Zelensky said any move to reduce attacks must be mutual and backed by credible guarantees. He also accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of refusing to stop strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. It is possible to stop strikes on energy infrastructure as early as today, but Putin does not want to do so,” Zelensky said.“Ukraine will be ready to stop striking Russian oil refineries if Russia stops striking our energy infrastructure. Any de-escalation steps must be reciprocal and backed by real guarantees,” he added.
Russian strikes continue across Ukraine
Zelensky cited the toll of recent Russian attacks, including strikes on civilian and energy infrastructure. He said rescue operations had concluded in Zaporizhzhia, where 23 people, including four children, were killed. He also said that a medical facility in Kharkiv was attacked while a five-storey apartment building in Slovyansk was damaged, where people may still have been trapped under the rubble. The Ukrainian president said that Russia had used around 1,450 aerial bombs, 75 missiles and more than 1,640 attack drones in a single week. He added that Kyiv would continue talks with European leaders to secure additional military assistance, particularly air defence systems and ammunition for combat aircraft.“Today, we will continue coordinating with partners – there will be talks with European leaders. Virtually every day, we coordinate at different levels and work on additional defense packages, first and foremost air defense and munitions for combat aircraft. All of this is to protect the lives of our people and Ukraine’s interests,” he said.

30 killed in Ukraine’s Kramatorsk
In Kramatorsk, Ukrainian authorities said two buses were struck by a Russian glide bomb, killing 30 people. Images released by local officials showed the burned-out remains of the vehicles and debris scattered along the road.Donetsk Governor Vadym Filashkin accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians, saying the attack violated “every conceivable rule of warfare and norm of international humanitarian law”.The strike came a day after a Russian missile attack on an apartment building in Pryluky killed 22 people, including five children. The latest casualties add to growing fears over attacks beyond the immediate frontline. The United Nations has verified more than 17,000 civilian deaths since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022, while warning that the actual toll is considerably higher.Kramatorsk, a major Ukrainian logistics hub before the war, remains one of the key cities in Donetsk still under Kyiv’s control. With Russian forces pressing closer, local authorities have now suspended public transport in Kramatorsk and neighbouring Sloviansk, citing concerns for passengers and drivers.“Under these circumstances, we cannot risk the lives of passengers and drivers,” Filashkin said. “The safety of the residents of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk is now our top priority.”

Russia’s air campaign over Ukraine is entering another phase. Faster jet-powered drones are flying alongside traditional Shahed-type systems, while Moscow is increasing the scale and variety of weapons being launched at Ukrainian targets. The challenge for Ukraine is increasingly one of cost, speed and numbers. NATO does not yet have enough low-cost weapons to economically counter the growing mass of Russian drones, according to Lieutenant General Ben Hodges, former Commanding General of US Army Europe and a former senior NATO commander, who spoke to me on WION Defence Pulse about the rapidly changing air war over Ukraine. Russia is increasingly deploying faster jet-powered attack drones alongside its established propeller-driven systems. Ukraine says some are operating beyond the reach of mobile air-defence teams, forcing it to employ F-16s and MiGs as part of the interception effort. When I asked Gen Hodges whether NATO possesses enough inexpensive weapons to fight such an air war without losing the economic contest, Hodges was unequivocal. “Not yet”, he said. Hodges said Western defence industries and national procurement systems had been “slow off the mark”. Although he expects capabilities to improve as governments recognise the requirement, his assessment of NATO's current position was direct: “Right now we're behind.” WATCH:
<oembed url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZ8kwwkx9TY&list=PLKwyKu6LhauQ&index=6"></oembed>

Russia learns through mass
Hodges credited Russia with adapting during the war, particularly in its ability to scale production and employ large numbers of systems to overwhelm Ukrainian defences. He described the volume and mass of Russia's jet-powered drones as the central challenge. Hodges also defended Ukraine's use of F-16s against drones, explaining that combat aircraft form a normal component of integrated air and missile defence alongside ground, airborne and space-based sensors.
Doubts over Patriot production
Hodges also delivered a significant assessment of Ukraine's effort to manufacture Patriot air-defence systems. President Donald Trump said in July that Ukraine would receive the right to manufacture Patriots, but licensed production still remains under discussion. Hodges said effective air and missile defence remained extremely urgent for Ukraine. He then went further, saying he had “zero confidence that the Trump administration was ever going to” allow Ukraine to manufacture Patriot systems, pointing to the absence of visible progress since Trump's statement. This was Hodges' startling assessment of the administration's intentions, rather than confirmation of US policy. In my view, his remarks underline two immediate pressures facing Western air defences: expanding affordable interception capacity fast enough to counter Russia's growing drone numbers and ensuring Ukraine has sufficient high-end systems for the ballistic missile threat. Gen. Hodges gave deep insights on the overall war doctrine of Russia as it learns and adapts while he minced no words in acknowledging the capability gaps in the NATO air defence umbrella. Ukraine is using artificial intelligence(AI)-enabled robot guns to shoot down Russia's new and fast-moving jet-powered drones, the Ukrainian air force confirmed on Monday (October 5). Ukraine has been finding a way for months to counter the new Russian drones pounding the Ukrainian capital. This comes after Russia began deploying newer jet-powered drones capable of moving faster, which makes them harder to intercept than the traditional models, which are based on Iranian Shahed drones. In response, air force spokesman Colonel Yuri Ignat told national television, "As part of Ukraine's efforts to respond, robotic turrets are now being installed on bridges." "There have already been shoot-downs of the drones, including the bigger, faster and more powerful Geran-5 version," he told national television. Also read: Iranian women undergo firearms training amid rising tensions with US, Israel
Homegrown Ukrainian innovation
Ignat elaborated that these newly deployed turrets across Kyiv rely on optical vision and artificial intelligence working in tandem, effectively removing human involvement from the strike process. Sergiy Beskrestnov, who advises Ukraine's defence ministry on technology, described the system over the weekend on Telegram as a homegrown Ukrainian innovation: automated turrets equipped with AI-controlled machine guns designed specifically to take down drones. According to Beskrestnov, 12 of these turrets are already operational in Kyiv, with plans underway to expand their numbers further. Ignat, however, conceded that the system currently operates within a limited radius. "It can operate at about one kilometre plus. And it works when conditions are favourable, when the attack approach angle is suitable," he told AFP. "This is not some kind of panacea," he said, and underscored that the turrets were part of "an integrated air defence system that provides engagement of these targets at different tiers". "Of course we rely on all available assets." This development fits into a broader pattern for Ukraine as it has been accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence deeper into its military operations. And technology already being deployed on the front lines to steer drones, pinpoint targets, and orchestrate complex, large-scale missions.

Former Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced on Sunday (Sep 27) that the country is launching the “Army of Robots.” He said that new initiative is aimed to develop robotic systems that can undertake dangerous missions and reduce risks to human lives. Describing it as an "ecosystem", Fedorov added the Army of Robots would not be a single company. The initiative builds on Ukraine’s experience with its Army of Drones programme, launched in 2022. Fedorov said the next technological breakthrough Ukraine is pursuing is the robotisation of warfare. Under the initiative, Ukraine will invest in defence-tech companies, launch its own technology projects, develop research and development capabilities, test systems with the military and scale up technologies that prove effective on the battlefield. Also Read: Russia-Ukraine war: Blast rocks Russia’s Ulyanovsk after Ukrainian drone attack “The Army of Robots is not one company. We will invest in defense tech companies, launch our own technology projects, test them with the military and scale what works on the battlefield,” said Fedorov. “The goal is simple — save lives. Robots should take on the most dangerous missions: evacuating the wounded, delivering ammunition, mining and demining, reconnaissance, defending positions and engaging targets,” he added in a post on X. He also called on defence-tech companies and engineers working on robotics to join the initiative. He also sought a CTO or tech lead for the Army of Robots. Additionally, General Andrii Biletsky, commander of Ukraine’s Third Army Corps, said that Ukraine was using drones to deploy ground robots behind enemy lines and conduct attacks. Suicide ground robots are small wheeled unmanned vehicles controlled remotely by operators. Explosives can be attached to the vehicles, which are then directed towards designated targets before being detonated.
