Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned airlines, insurance companies and other aviation stakeholders that growing Ukrainian drone activity is making Russian airspace increasingly dangerous and could effectively force the closure of the country’s skies. “Today, we want to warn every airline that uses Russian airspace, every insurer, everyone who still uses key Russian airports: the Russian sky is becoming completely dangerous,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address. Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine does not pose a threat to civilian aviation, while warning that Ukrainian drones would continue operating over Russian territory. “Ukraine poses no threat to civil aviation, but there will be drones in Russia’s skies and due notice must be taken,” he said. The Ukrainian president also accused Russian authorities of failing to adequately communicate aviation risks linked to the ongoing drone activity. “Although Russian authorities are not properly announcing it, Russian airspace will effectively be closing. The war started by Russia is closing its own skies,” Zelenskyy added. The warning comes as Russia has intensified its air campaign against Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities in recent weeks. Moscow’s latest attacks killed 12 people and injured many others, marking the sixth consecutive day of heavy assaults on the Ukrainian capital. Ukraine, meanwhile, has continued launching drone strikes against targets inside Russia. Several of the attacks have focused on facilities linked to Russia’s oil industry, along with retail and other sites. Zelenskyy’s latest warning highlights the growing impact of the drone war on Russia’s aviation sector. As Ukrainian drone operations continue across Russian territory and Russian missile and drone attacks intensify against Ukrainian cities, concerns over the safety of Russian airspace are becoming increasingly prominent.

'Russian sky is becoming completely dangerous': Zelensky warns as Ukraine steps up drone strikes

Kyiv is facing increasingly lengthy daytime air raid warnings as Russia intensifies its drone campaign against Ukraine, launching around 800 jet-powered drones in just four days. The new-generation Shahed drones can reportedly reach cruising speeds of between 200mph and 250mph, roughly twice the speed of their piston-engine predecessors, which travel at about 115mph. Their higher speed is making them more difficult for Ukraine’s low-cost interceptor drones to bring down.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday that jet-powered drones now make up more than half of the unmanned aircraft Russia is using in its attacks, describing the campaign as an effort to “wear down” Ukraine.“There were almost 1,500 drones of all types in these four days alone – about 800 of them jet-powered,” the president said. Ukraine was currently relying on combat aircraft to shoot them down, he added. One of the latest models, the Geran-4, hit an ammunition storage site in Myla, a village around 15 miles west of Kyiv, on Thursday. The attack reportedly killed 38 people and triggered hours of secondary explosions. Warehouses were destroyed and nearby residential properties were also damaged.Russia has continued to conduct waves of daytime drone attacks over recent days, resulting in prolonged air raid warnings, particularly in the Ukrainian capital. Kyiv recorded eight air raid alerts by lunchtime on Monday.Although daytime strikes have occurred previously, they were relatively unusual. The latest attacks have disrupted daily life, with some businesses temporarily suspending operations during alerts. Residents have also been forced to decide whether to stay inside, move to shelters or continue their activities despite the warnings. The presence of nearby drones can also complicate emergency response operations. Firefighters and other emergency crews may be forced to withdraw from damaged locations when another attack is detected, potentially allowing fires to spread. A similar situation occurred earlier this month after a food storage facility in Boryspil, east of Kyiv, was hit.Russian forces have also targeted warehouses in and around Kyiv during the past month. The strikes have been linked to retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on the Wildberries and Ozon distribution networks in Russia. The resulting disruption has contributed to shortages of some food products in Ukrainian stores, although officials have attempted to reassure the public.Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to Zelenskyy on defence technology, urged people “do not give in to rumours, misinformation, and panic” and said that companies were rebuilding supply chains in response to the attacks. “We will not die of hunger,” he wrote in a social media posting.Shahed drones feature a distinctive delta-wing design and were initially developed in Iran before the technology was transferred to Russia. He said production date stamps discovered on drone components indicated that some weapons were being launched only days after leaving the manufacturing facility in Yelabuga.Ukraine has previously developed a network of inexpensive ground-launched interceptors capable of destroying slower piston-engine Shahed drones. Those systems helped push interception rates above 90%.Over the weekend, Zelenskyy said Ukraine would need to maintain that level of defence effectiveness as the country enters autumn.Ukrainian engineers are now working on faster interceptor drones designed specifically to counter the newer jet-powered Shaheds. Few technical details have been disclosed publicly, but Zelenskyy said progress was already being made.“Four companies have developed the relevant interceptor drones, and one company has the most successful technology,” Zelensky said. The shift toward faster drones presents a new challenge for Ukraine's air-defence network. As Russia increases production and uses the weapons in sustained waves during daylight hours, Ukrainian forces face growing pressure to develop interceptors capable of matching their speed while remaining inexpensive enough for large-scale deployment.

Russia has extended its ban on diesel exports as the country struggles with fuel shortages following a series of Ukrainian drone attacks on oil refineries.

The Russian government says the diesel export restrictions will remain in place until September 30. The measures also cover marine fuel and gas oils exported by Russian producers. Moscow says the objective is to protect domestic supplies and stabilise the Russian fuel market amid shortages and rising prices.

Russian refineries have faced months of disruption after Ukrainian drone attacks damaged or forced shutdowns at several plants, reducing fuel production. Industry sources say gasoline production had fallen significantly compared with domestic demand, prompting Russia to increase fuel imports, including supplies from Belarus.

The impact could extend well beyond Russia. Russia is one of the world’s largest diesel exporters, meaning the removal of Russian barrels from international markets could force major buyers to find alternative supplies.

Turkey has already increased diesel imports from the United States and India as its dependence on Russian fuel declines. The shift comes as global diesel markets remain tight because of refinery disruptions, geopolitical tensions and shipping problems.

Ukraine's former defense minister Fedorov has taken on a new international defense role just weeks after his dramatic dismissal from Kyiv's government triggered protests across the country.

Fedorov has accepted a position as defense innovation adviser to Italy's Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, where he will advise on technologies shaping modern warfare. His work will reportedly focus on autonomous systems, air defense and defense-sector innovation.

Italy's Defense Ministry described the appointment as an important opportunity, with Fedorov's experience in military technology and innovation expected to contribute to Italy's response to emerging security challenges.

Fedorov will remain based in Kyiv while carrying out his new responsibilities.

The appointment comes after a major political fallout in Ukraine. Fedorov was dismissed as defense minister in July amid reported tensions with Ukraine's military leadership. His removal sparked protests, with supporters demanding that he be reinstated.

Russia has launched another major wave of drone attacks across Ukraine, with strikes reported in the Kyiv region, Zaporizhzhia and other areas as the Kremlin's aerial campaign intensifies.

In the Kyiv region, Ukrainian authorities reported casualties and extensive damage to warehouses, homes, apartment buildings and vehicles. One warehouse worker said two Shahed drones struck the facility, with a second drone reportedly hitting after emergency crews arrived. Ukrainian officials described the incident as a possible double-tap attack targeting first responders.

Air raid sirens sounded repeatedly across Kyiv as authorities warned residents about worsening air quality following the attacks.

In Zaporizhzhia, Russian drones reportedly struck a major shopping and home-improvement complex, triggering a massive fire that spread across thousands of square meters. Several people were reportedly injured, while rescue operations faced the threat of further attacks.

The latest strikes are part of a wider Russian campaign targeting Ukrainian logistics, warehouses, distribution facilities and other infrastructure.

On the eastern front, Ukrainian forces say Russian troops are positioned just several kilometres away from key defensive areas around the Donbas fortress belt, increasing pressure on the battlefield.

Russia has also claimed that its air defenses intercepted or destroyed 512 Ukrainian drones across multiple Russian regions, Crimea and the Black Sea. Russian-installed authorities in Sevastopol also reported damage to a residential building and injuries.

"On Friday (28 August) at around 8:10 pm (1710 GMT), an unmanned aerial vehicle... fell on or struck the grounds of an enterprise in the town of Myla," the office of Ukraine's prosecutor general said. "A large-scale fire broke out on the enterprise's grounds, and detonation began," it added. Russia launched at least two missiles and over 250 drones at Ukraine between late Friday (August 28) and early Saturday (August 29), as per the Ukrainian air force.

Russia launched a large-scale overnight assault on Ukraine, firing missiles and hundreds of drones at Kyiv and other cities. Ukrainian officials said ports, grain storage facilities, industrial sites and retail distribution centers were among the targets. Air defence systems were activated across the capital as residents awoke to explosions and drone interceptions. Ukraine said it successfully shot down several ballistic missiles, aided by recently received Patriot interceptors. Moscow claimed the strikes targeted infrastructure supporting Ukraine's war effort, as the conflict continues to intensify with both sides carrying out long-range attacks.

Russia-Ukraine strike: Strikes hit multiple parts of Kyiv

The rivalry between Russia and NATO appears to be entering a new and increasingly complex phase, with European countries warning about what they describe as Russia’s growing use of hybrid warfare.

Unlike conventional warfare, hybrid warfare combines military and non-military tactics, including cyberattacks, disinformation, electronic warfare, covert operations and economic pressure, to weaken an opponent without triggering a full-scale conflict.

A reported surprise visit to Russia by CIA Director John Ratcliffe has drawn fresh attention to the issue. According to reports in American media, the CIA chief warned Moscow against attacking NATO countries amid intelligence assessments about the possibility of a limited Russian military move designed to test NATO’s resolve.

The Kremlin has rejected those claims, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov describing them as “scare stories” and accusing European countries of pursuing an aggressive policy toward Russia.

Meanwhile, European governments have increasingly raised concerns over alleged hybrid attacks. Several drone incidents have been reported across the Baltic region, while officials have also pointed to alleged electronic warfare, covert operations and attempts to manipulate navigation systems.

Moscow Is Accused of 'Unleashing Hybrid Warfare' on Nato States

Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has issued a stark warning, stating that weak governance, entrenched bureaucratic hurdles, and a lack of integrated military innovation are severely hindering Kyiv's war effort against Russia.

Russia-Ukraine war: Fedorov says weak innovation is hurting Ukraine's war effort

Ukraine appears to be slowly losing ground in its war with Russia and has only a few months to make decisions that could change the course of the conflict, ousted Ukrainian defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov said. Fedorov, who was removed from his post last month, said Kyiv lacked a clear strategy for winning the four-year-old war. He also blamed corruption, political interference and a failure to adopt new technologies quickly enough.“I think that there’s now a turning point which will determine our future trajectory, but it looks as though we’re gradually, slowly losing,” Fedorov told Reuters. His assessment sharply contrasts with Kyiv’s official messaging. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office hit back, saying Fedorov had expressed a positive view of the war while serving as minister and that only his personal status had changed.
Ukraine faces weapons crunch
Russia continues to pound Ukrainian factories and warehouses with ballistic missiles, while Kyiv’s stocks of air-defence interceptors are running low. Russian forces are also making slow advances in the Donbas, although at a slower pace than last year. Ukraine has responded with an expanding campaign of drone and missile strikes deep inside Russia, hitting military facilities and oil refineries.Fedorov argued that Kyiv must accelerate work on autonomous drones using artificial intelligence, inexpensive interceptor missiles and its own ballistic missile programme.“Technologies exist already which could completely stop the Russians, but our absence of vision ... means we do not apply them,” he said, accusing the Ukrainian state of operating at “5 per cent effectiveness.”
Budget row and election call
Fedorov also defended his decision to bring forward defence spending, after President Volodymyr Zelensky said it had created a $27 billion budget gap.The former minister disputed the figure and said his spending plan relied on procurement savings and international support. His call for wartime elections has further deepened his clash with Zelensky. Ukraine remains under martial law, which prevents elections.Fedorov, meanwhile, plans to pursue military technology projects and an investment fund while continuing his campaign for elections.

Russian nuclear submarine Khabarovsk has been launched for the first time and put to sea. The submarine can carry nuclear “doomsday” torpedoes, which would be launched with such force that they would trigger tsunamis. The trials happened in the White Sea last week. The submarine carries regular anti-ship and land-attack missiles, and on top of them, can carry up to six Poseidon nuclear torpedoes. The tensions between the UK and Russia over support to Ukraine in the war has escalated as the Kremlin has withdrawn its ambassador to the UK. Andrey Kelin, who served as the Russian ambassador to the UK for over seven years, left his diplomatic posting on July 21. Moscow has not submitted any candidates to the Foreign Office to replace him and embassy staff are understood to have no indication of when a successor might be appointed, UK based-The Times reported. This comes at the backdrop of UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham saying that the UK is continuing to “support Ukraine 100 per cent” after Moscow threatened consequences for the reported use of British drones for strikes deep into Russia. Ukraine is seeking Elon Musk’s approval to use Starlink-equipped attack drones against Russian ballistic missile launchers deep inside Russia, as Kyiv faces growing pressure on its air-defence capabilities, according to people familiar with the discussions. The proposal would allow Ukrainian drones using SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network to operate up to 200km inside Russian territory. Kyiv believes the move could help target missile launchers, command centres and other military infrastructure responsible for attacks on Ukraine.
The Trump angle
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reportedly raised the request during his meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House in July. Zelensky asked Trump to speak to Musk about permitting the use of Starlink beyond Ukraine’s borders. However, Trump was non-committal, and people familiar with the meeting said he did not appear supportive of the proposal. Musk has also previously resisted allowing Starlink to be used for offensive operations inside Russia. The request comes as Ukraine struggles with a shortage of Patriot interceptors, its main defence against Russian ballistic missiles. Intensifying Russian missile and drone attacks, coupled with high demand for Patriot systems in the Middle East, have further strained global supplies.Military analyst Franz-Stefan Gady said Ukraine needed to consider a more proactive approach to countering Russian attacks.“How can Ukraine engage in a more proactive, shooting-the-archer strategy?” Gady asked, referring to efforts to destroy missile launchers, command systems and logistics before attacks are carried out.
Why Starlink?
Starlink-equipped drones can maintain communications over longer distances and are less vulnerable to conventional jamming, making them potentially valuable for deep-strike missions.Musk has previously restricted Starlink access in sensitive situations. In 2022, access was cut during a Ukrainian operation near Crimea over concerns that the move could trigger a wider escalation.Ukraine’s former defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who had maintained direct contact with Musk, has also acknowledged the difficulty of securing approval.“Let’s just say, [it’s] a difficult task right now to achieve the outcome we need through this communication,” Fedorov said on August 6.

The US Army has decided to phase out a drone unit that was studying and incorporating lessons from foreign wars. The move also includes the use of uncrewed systems in the Russia-Ukraine war. The infantry battalion, known as the Unmanned Assault Battalion, is set to participate in the Joint Multinational Readiness Centre in the coming days in Germany. In response, the official confirmed that the battalion will “refocus on its core warfighting tasks as an airborne infantry battalion assigned to a Mobile Brigade Combat Team (Airborne),” after the exercises. It also said that the US Army Europe and Africa, with the Army and U.S. European Command's backup, tasked the infantry battalion to prototype an employment concept for a tactical unmanned systems battalion. The unit had also been backed by Gen. Chris Donahue, former commander of U.S. Army Europe and Africa, whose ouster by Hegseth in July split opinion among Republican lawmakers in Congress. The Army declined to respond to The Hill's request for comment. Military experts criticised the move to phase out the unit, noting that Ukraine serves as a live "battle lab" for understanding how drone warfare is reshaping modern combat, home to some of the world's most seasoned drone operators, who continue refining their tactics under constant Russian assault. Also read: ‘She has no official role’: Questions mount after Hegseth’s wife attended sensitive Pentagon meeting on Ukraine “The U.S. is behind in adopting and fielding small drones. In the Middle East, that challenge is largely defending static bases against long-range one-way-attack … drones. But in Europe, the counterdrone challenge is much greater,” and includes defending against smaller first-person view drones, McMillan, now a senior research analyst at the Centre on Military and Political Power at the Foundation for Defence of Democracies, said on Thursday. “This drone unit was designed to incorporate and apply desperately needed lessons learned from Ukraine to help the U.S. Army adapt to this challenge, "McMillan added. After the war between the US and Iran started in late February, the importance of drone warfare in modern conflicts was noted as Iran was launching scores of one-way attack drones, striking US bases in the Persian Gulf region.

A Russian cargo jet has been stuck at Toronto Pearson International Airport since it launched an invasion of Ukraine. The Antonov An-124 plane has been stranded in Canada as the country closed its airspace to Russian aircraft in 2022, soon after the war started. Russia and Ukraine have exchanged a fresh wave of intense strikes, leaving casualties and widespread destruction on both sides. A prominent market in Kyiv was reportedly gutted in Russian strikes, while Ukraine claimed to have targeted a missile fuel production facility in Russia's Rostov region.

The escalation comes amid reports that British-made drones are being used in Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russian territory, including attacks targeting facilities near Moscow.

Meanwhile, a NATO F-18 fighter reportedly shot down a drone that breached Romanian airspace, marking another serious development along NATO's eastern flank.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also called for greater international support to protect Ukraine's cultural heritage sites. At the same time, Germany, France and the UK are reportedly working on their own negotiating framework amid concerns that Europe could be excluded from future US-led Russia-Ukraine peace talks.
