A Russian drone strike on a Kyiv-Warsaw passenger train near Ukraine’s border with Poland has raised fresh concerns about the widening risks of Moscow’s war. Polish officials have warned that further escalation could affect NATO territory. The train, carrying 206 passengers, was struck near Yahodyn in western Ukraine on Sunday (Sep 13). No casualties were reported, but the service was delayed by more than six hours before continuing towards Warsaw after border checks. Following the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of “deliberately” targeting the train.According to Poland’s interior ministry, a second Russian drone hit just two kilometres from the Polish border at a fuel station in Yahodyn, setting two trucks on fire.“The unmanned aircraft hit a fuel station in the town of Yahodyn, 2 km from the Polish border,” spokeswoman Karolina Galecka said, adding that “as a result of the strike two trucks... caught fire.”The strikes came as US President Donald Trump warned Zelensky to “stop knocking out diesel fuel” refineries in Russia as it was resulting in shortages and “hurting” other countries.
Western officials were nearby
Ukraine’s state railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia said senior Western figures were at the station shortly before the strike at the train. According to reports, their train was halted and evacuated. The presence of the former British prime minister and former CIA director adds another layer to an incident already drawing attention because of its proximity to Poland.“Shortly before the locomotive was hit at the Ukrainian-Polish border, a diplomatic train was at Yagodyn station,” the operator said. “There were, among others, security advisers from several EU member states and former European leaders on board, including former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson. In another train that was at Yagodyn station at the very moment of the attack was former CIA Director David Petraeus.”Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson condemned the strike, calling it a “random and senseless attack” on Ukrainians and civilian railways. He urged Western countries to provide Ukraine with more air defences and use frozen Russian assets to support Kyiv, arguing that stronger backing could help end the war sooner.
Poland warns of escalation
Following the attack, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk chaired an emergency meeting. He warned that Russia’s military campaign could increasingly pose a threat to Poland.“The coming weeks and months will be a period of very intensive actions on the Russian side,” Tusk said, adding that Poland “cannot rule out that this escalation will also affect our territory.”Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, speaking in Kyiv, described the attacks as an escalation and called for increased support for Ukraine.“This is an escalation, this is another great challenge for Ukraine and for the hypothetical future victims of Russian aggression and this means that we should double our efforts to support victims of aggression,” Sikorski said.
Moscow says railway infrastructure targeted
Russia confirmed striking railway infrastructure in western Ukraine but said the facilities were being used to move military supplies from Europe.“Strikes have continued on railway infrastructure in the western regions of Ukraine, which are used to transport military cargo from European countries,” Russia’s defence ministry said.Zelensky, however, said the passenger train was deliberately targeted and accused Moscow of striking civilian and critical infrastructure.“It is precisely to prevent these strikes from spreading further into Europe that Ukrainian men and women fight every day, give their lives, and do not allow the aggression to expand,” Zelensky said.
Peace efforts face another setback
The strikes came days after US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held talks in Kyiv and Moscow as Washington sought to revive negotiations to end the war.The Kremlin said three-way talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the US could potentially take place in October, although there is still no agreed framework. Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov said there was no “coordinated package” for negotiations yet, while President Vladimir Putin’s government continues to insist that territorial issues must be addressed.

NATO under Russian threat? Drone strikes just 2 km from Poland, narrow escape for former UK PM, CIA chief

Russia is intensifying its drone campaign against Ukraine, with Kyiv, Odesa and other regions facing repeated attacks. A Russian drone also struck an evacuated Kyiv-Warsaw train near Ukraine's border with Poland, raising fresh concerns about the expanding reach of the aerial campaign.
At the centre of the new threat are jet-powered Shahed-type drones, known in Russia as Gerans. Now the older Shahed-136 drones flew at roughly 180 km/h, while newer jet-powered versions have reportedly reached around 483 km/h. The higher speed reduces interception time and can force Ukraine to use more expensive air-defence systems.

BRICS 2026: Modi, Putin & Xi Meet in New Delhi | Is a New Global Power Shift Coming

Ukraine is facing an intense, coordinated assault as Russia executes a dual-front offensive designed to bleed the country from above and break it on the ground. In Kyiv, missiles and drones attacks continue, straining domestic air defences.
Moscow claims that nearly 1,700 Ukrainian troops are cut off and encircled in the Kharkiv region, an assertion Ukrainian military commanders deny, pointing to sharp tactical counter-attacks repelling Russian ground units.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky faces mounting challenges as the grinding war with Russia continues. Alongside the battlefield pressure, questions surrounding corruption, governance and the prospects for peace are adding to the political strain facing Kyiv. As Ukraine navigates a prolonged conflict and uncertain diplomatic path, how will these pressures shape Zelensky’s leadership and the country’s future?

Amid ongoing escalations between Russia and Ukraine, a Chinese state-owned company supplied Moscow with sufficient specialised material to potentially manufacture carbon fibre to use in nearly 1,300 kamikaze drones, according to documents obtained by POLITICO from internal Russian shipping records. The development has raised fresh questions over the role of China in sustaining Moscow’s war machine despite Western sanctions. According to documents, China’s Jilin Chemical Fibre Group transported 46 tonnes of polyacrylonitrile, or PAN precursor, to Alabuga-Volokno, a subsidiary of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom that produces high-specification carbon fibre for the defence industry of Russia. POLITICO’s investigation confirmed that the consignment was shipped using a customs classification in connection with civilian synthetic fibres including nylon and polyester, despite the code that would have identified PAN precursor as a dual-use product. Basically, PAN precursor is the base material needed to make high-performance carbon fibre, a material valued for being both lightweight and very strong. This makes it especially useful for building aircraft and drones.
Carbon fibre for as many as 1,300 long-range kamikaze drones
In response to the report, the weapons expert David Albright, founder and president of the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security, claimed that the shipped quantity could have produced sufficient carbon fibre for as many as 1,300 long-range kamikaze drones. Albright stated that the firm was supplying “a critical part of making the carbon fibre necessary" for weaponised drones. “Without it, you can’t build the airframe," he said, noting this material is utilised to strengthen wings and internal structures, along with the fuel tank and engine. These findings could be quite significant for China, which has consistently denied sending military supplies to Russia. Chinese-made parts have been found in downed Russian drones before, but this shipping data reportedly gives a clearer, more direct link between a Chinese state-owned company and Russia's production network. David Albright, who founded and leads the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security, stated that this evidence could give space for US sanctions against the Chinese company, as the shipments went to a Rosatom subsidiary even after several Western governments had already blacklisted it. Also read: 'Carbon bomb' explodes as Indonesia wildfires ravage ancient reserves Along with the US House Select Committee on China, Ukrainian officials have also confirmed the authenticity of the documentation. In response, Serhii Kuzan, head of the Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Centre, claimed that the records provided clear evidence of Chinese state-controlled companies supplying raw materials to Russia, which are being utilised for weapons manufacturing. Dennis Wilder, a former CIA deputy assistant director, claimed that the number of shipments couldn't be possible without the knowledge of Chinese authorities. “The idea that Chinese state-owned enterprises can hide things from the Chinese government just doesn’t wash.” The statement comes after former US intelligence officials challenged Beijing's continuous claim that Chinese state companies are not involved in supporting Russia's war machine. This news comes at a time when Western countries are increasingly worried about China's part in keeping Russia's defence industry running. China insists it hasn't given Moscow any lethal weapons, but Western officials have repeatedly pointed out concerns that Chinese firms are supplying "dual-use" goods and technology, items that can be used for both civilian and military purposes, which can end up being used in Russian weapons.

The fighting has also pushed civilian casualties to some of their highest levels since the Russia-Ukraine war began in February 2022. Trump said he sent Witkoff and Kushner to explore whether the two sides could reach an agreement. “I sent Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, two great negotiators. They've done a great job, and we sent them over to see whether or not we can get something done. And there may be a good chance that we'll do it,” Trump said. Trump did not say whether the US proposal would require Ukraine to give up territory. He said only that Washington had “an idea for peace”. Witkoff and Kushner have taken part in earlier US diplomatic efforts involving Gaza and Iran. They have also travelled to Moscow several times as part of attempts to find a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine war. Zelenskyy accuses Russia of targeting Kyiv visit The latest diplomatic effort has come as attacks across Ukraine have intensified. Zelenskyy accused Russia of trying to disrupt the planned US delegation visit. Overnight strikes hit areas around Kyiv, including the capital’s two airports. He also linked Russian attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk region to preparations for the US visit. “Clearly, these Russian strikes on the airports are a reaction to the discussions and preparations for the possibility of the US side using an aircraft to travel to Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said.

Putin held talks with Trump envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff in Moscow as Russia and Ukraine announced a temporary pause in strikes ahead of the US delegation’s expected visit to Kyiv.
