After being put into bat first following the toss, stand-in skipper Hardik Pandya explained the reason for dropping both Virat and Rohit. The duo has been playing consistent cricket in recent times and needed rest to manage the workload. Both Virat and Rohit have been rested from the T20 series as well and will travel back to India after the conclusion of the ODI series.

“Rohit and Virat have been playing constant cricket, few questions need to be answered for us so they are resting in this game. They can be fresh for the third ODI,” Hardik said at the toss.

The Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper admitted that there are areas where the team can improve despite them being on the front foot in the first ODI. India won the contest by five wickets, however, considering the&nbsp;target, it was a poor run chase by the Men in Blue.

“I think when you get someone out for 115, it's a good effort from the bowlers. Our catching was impressive, but we can improve in certain areas. Instead of losing five wickets, we could have lost only two wickets and finished the last game,” added Hardik.

The Indian team also saw the return of Sanju Samson and Axar Patel in the team having remained out of contention in the opening ODI. Samson will have the opportunity to impress the selector as he faces a tough task to make the ODI World Cup squad while Axar will see competition from Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal for a place in the mega event.

At the post-match presentation, Rohit revealed, "We wanted to give game time to the ODI guys who have come in, we will keep trying those things whenever possible. To restrict them to 115, we knew we could try these guys and give them a go. I don't think they'll get many chances like this."

Rohit came out to bat at No. 7 whereas Kohli didn't feature in the run-chase. On him batting at No. 7, the Indian captain pointed out, "I made my debut for India and was batting at number 7, reminded me of those days."

With Rohit and Kohli experienced enough, India is focusing on giving their middle and lower-order batters enough chances -- wherever available -- in the run-up to the ODI WC, which starts on October 05. While only Ishan (52) made full use of batting at the top, India will be happy with other middle and lower-order batters also being exposed in the middle. They will hope for more such chances where they can&nbsp;experiment&nbsp;in the upcoming ODIs.

Kapil on Tuesday, July 25 spoke on the Indian team’s approach while terming them favourites for&nbsp;the&nbsp;International Cricket Council (ICC) tournament. He also spoke on the fitness issue of the team and warned them to necessary precautions.

<h2>Kapil terms India favourites</h2>

"I don't know how it will pan out. They are yet to announce the team for the World Cup. India will always enter a tournament as favourites as it has been the case for a long time," Kapil said while in conversation with PTI.

India will be one of the favourites alongside Australia and defending champions England to win the World Cup that will get underway on October 5. Rohit Sharma will be tasked to take the Indian team home and could become just the third captain to lead the nation to a World Cup win after Kapil and MS Dhoni.

"It's all about how the team comes to terms with the expectations from all sides. We have won a World Cup at home, and I am sure the team, whoever gets selected, can do it again. A World Cup is coming in four years, and I hope the players will be fully prepared," Kapil added.

Kapil led India to the 1983 World Cup saw the country lift the prize asset at the expense of then world champions West Indies. Kapil’s army beat West Indies by 43 runs in the final and scripted history.

"My time was different as we hardly played so much cricket. Now, these players are playing some 10 months of cricket. So, managing your body is important to keep away from injuries. Everybody's body is different and they would require individual plans to preserve their fitness," the former skipper added.

India will start their World Cup campaign against Australia on October 8 in Chennai before taking on arch-rivals Pakistan on October 15 in Ahmedabad. India clinched a fifth consecutive series triumph in the West Indies on Monday when the second and final Test of their series ended as a draw with no play possible because of rain on the final day.

West Indies closed day four at 76 for two having been set a daunting victory target of 365 to square the series at Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad.

However early showers put paid to any prospect of play in the morning and when they returned with greater intensity in the afternoon, the umpires were left with no option but to abandon the day's play and the end of the Test match and the series.

Mohammed Siraj, whose Test-best figures of five for 60 in the West Indies first innings opened the door to victory for India on the fourth morning, was named "Player of the Match".

"There was no help for fast bowlers on this wicket and when you get success like this in these conditions it gives you confidence," said Siraj via an interpreter on receiving the award.

"I had simple plans and just executed them. The captain just asked me to keep on doing what I have been doing before."

For his skipper, Rohit Sharma, the disappointment of not being able to push for victory on the last day to earn a 2-0 sweep was tempered by the satisfaction of seeing this team succeed without key performers in the bowling department.

"It was really pleasing to see how Siraj has led the attack in the absence of (Jasprit) Bumrah and (Mohammed) Shami," he observed.&nbsp;

"We have been playing really good Test cricket and I hope we can continue to do that. It's great to see how everyone has been ready to play their role, like yesterday when we needed quick runs."

For Kraigg Brathwaite, the captain of a West Indies team that last defeated India in a Test match in May 2002, it was yet another case of fishing for positives in a sea of setbacks.

"The key from here is obviously to be consistent," said the opening batsman in what has become a familiar refrain after every failed campaign.

"We will continue to work on our game, but it is encouraging to see the emergence of Alick (Athanaze) and Kirk (McKenzie) in the middle-order. I think these two guys have the promise and they are the future. I have a lot of belief in these two."

India won the first Test in Dominica by an innings and 141 runs – a record margin of success for them in the Caribbean – in three days.

While India would have been satisfied in some measure with the 1-0 series success, adding to previous triumphs in 2006, 2011, 2016 and 2019, they would have been disappointed to miss out on the chance to earn maximum points at the start of the new cycle of the World Test Championship.

Both teams now adjust their squads for the white ball leg of the tour with the first of three One-Day Internationals to be played at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Thursday, followed by five T20 Internationals, the last two of which will be played at Lauderhill in Florida, the United States.

The top two from the Super Four will then lock horns in the summit clash in mid-September. This time around, the tournament will be held in the ODI format -- mainly to serve as a dress rehearsal for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in India in October-November. Ever since the fixtures were out, there is a lot of excitement among fans as many expect arch-rivals India and Pakistan to meet thrice in the upcoming edition.

Both sides will meet on September 02 and can possibly meet after eight days, on September 10, and also in the final. Ahead of his side's face-off versus India, Pakistan great Waqar Younis backed Babar Azam &amp; Co. to beat Rohit Sharma-led Team India.&nbsp;

Gavaskar's statement can perhaps be seen as a question towards MS Dhoni, the former Indian skipper. While Dhoni enjoyed good success as a white-ball captain, India were miserable during their away tours of England (in 2011/12 and 2014), Australia (in 2011/12) and South Africa&nbsp;and New Zealand (in&nbsp;2013/14) under the former Indian wicketkeeper.&nbsp;

However, Dhoni retained the Test captaincy until he retired from the format in late 2014 during the Australia tour. From thereon, Virat Kohli took over and led India to the No. 1 ranking (with the team faring well in away tours as well).

Similarly, the likes of Kohli and Rohit Sharma have not led India to an ICC title&nbsp;after the end of Dhoni's successful era as the white-ball skipper. However, Kohli remained Test and T20I captain till the time he decided to step aside, but was sacked as the ODI skipper.

The unidentified active-duty soldier was first detected by thermal imaging equipment moving south near the Imjin River late on Wednesday and South Korean troops took him into custody just before midnight, the JCS said.

Also on Wednesday, the South Korean military recovered a body near the DMZ suspected to be that of a North Korean civilian, a spokesman for South Korea's defence ministry said on Thursday.

Clad in military-type pants and a belt, the body was found in the Imjin River and appeared to have been dead for at least two weeks, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported.

South Korea returned three North Koreans on Monday who had crossed the maritime border aboard a fishing vessel.

Officials from the South said they thought the fishermen may have wanted to defect but in the end the men chose to return to North Korea.

Hundreds of North Koreans make their way to South Korea each year hoping to defect, but unauthorized crossings of the DMZ are rare.

The zone is dotted with landmines, fences, guard posts, and other military equipment on both sides of the border.

The last defection by a North Korean soldier across the DMZ was in November 2018.

In November 2017 a North Korean soldier was shot multiple times by fellow soldiers as he fled across the border into South Korea, where he was treated by doctors.

Another North Korean soldier crossed the border to defect a few weeks later in an incident that led to South Korean guards firing warning shots into North Korea.

North and South Korea agreed last year to try to reduce tensions along their border by reducing the number of landmines and guard posts, disarming their guards at a truce village, and imposing a no-fly zone.

Ravichandran Ashwin's seven-wicket second innings demolition job underlined his utter dominance of an inept West Indies team who crashed to defeat by an innings and 141 runs late on the third day of the first Test against India in Dominica on Friday. It was India's largest margin of victory in a Test match in the West Indies. India maintains an unbeaten run spanning more than 21 years against the Carrebean&nbsp;opponents going into the second and final Test starting next Thursday in Trinidad.

After Rohit Sharma declared the tourists' first innings at 421 for five, 40 minutes into the afternoon session, first day destroyers Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja wasted little time in adding to that first innings success to skittle the Caribbean team for 130 in just over 50 overs.

Ashwin fittingly ended the match by trapping last man Jomel Warrican leg-before.

His second innings' haul of 7-71 lifted his match figures to 12 -131 -– his eighth match haul of 10 wickets or more in Tests -- while the support of Jadeja kept relentless pressure on a home side technically and temperamentally incapable of coping with such quality spin bowling on a helpful pitch.

Debutant Alick Athanaze was again the top scorer with 28 but his effort paled in comparison to his Indian counterpart as opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal led the way in India's only innings with a determined, dedicated innings of 171 which spanned more than eight hours and consumed&nbsp;387 deliveries.

That effort earned him the player of the match award notwithstanding the fantastic bowling figures of Ashwin.

"This experience has been a special moment," said the 21-year-old left-hander. "I used to think about playing for my country when I was young. It is an emotional moment for me but this just the start."

<h2>- 'Let ourselves down' -</h2>

For West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite, the emotions were the exact opposite on a forgettable day personally and for his team.

"I didn't think it spun a lot early on, we just let ourselves down with the bat," said the opener, a comment which immediately raised a few eyebrows given how the pitch behaved virtually from the first session. &nbsp;"Senior guys, starting with myself, have to lead the way. We have to use the bat more instead of our pads."

As on day one, Brathwaite and opening partner Tagenarine Chanderpaul had to cope with spin just minutes into the start of the second innings and although he was dropped on nought, Ashwin eventually put him out of his misery. He had missed a straightforward chance at short extra-cover in the morning offered by Virat Kohli off left-arm spinner Warrican.

Dropped at 40, Kohli went on to score 76 before falling to Rahkeem Cornwall just after lunch. The burly off-spinner was only allowed to bowl after the morning period because of time spent off the field on the first day when he was unwell.

Earlier, West Indies finally prised out Jaiswal and added the wicket of Ajinkya Rahane pre-lunch.

Jaiswal was finally undone by the extra pace and bounce extracted by fast bowler Alzarri Joseph in edging a catch to wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva after an hour's play.

Jaiswal's knock showcased his strong mental strength as well as the ability to stitch a long and patient innings.

By reaching the three-figure mark on his first Test, Jaiswal has now become only the 17th Indian, and 113th overall, to kick off his red-ball career with a ton. Jaiswal has already stitched a 200-run plus opening stand along with skipper Rohit, who is also nearing a ton. Meanwhile, Rohit also attained a mammoth feat before his young opening partner entered triple digits. The hitman became only the second batsman after Virat Kohli to complete 3,500 runs in all forms of the game. He was 63 shy from reaching 3,500 Test runs and reached the milestone without dropping much sweat.

Rohit likes the pace, even when the fast bowlers bowled those short deliveries, it was not coming on. He was happy to stay restrained and then, yes, on a couple of occasions, he took on the bowlers and hit them over the top," Kumble said on the Indian skipper.

India continued their overnight dominance at the start of Day 2 on Thursday as the duo of Rohit and Jaiswal put a stand of 229 runs for the first wicket. Jaiswal on debut scored an unbeaten 143 and is going good with his approach. Rohit on the flip side was dismissed for 103, just after getting the hundred. It was his 10th 44th international hundred and first as skipper in the Test side.

I am glad that he could put his head down and get the hundred," he added.
