The left-hander has played the situation with aplomb, displayed a steady approach and carried out his innings with utmost responsibility and purpose. Thus, many former cricketers have backed him to become India's No. 4 in the upcoming&nbsp;World Cup. But should Team India give up on their back-ups and bring in a youngster as a wildcard entry if Iyer and Rahul remain unfit?&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an interaction with news agency PTI, former Indian chief selector MSK Prasad said, "First of all, we should know whether Shreyas Iyer is fit or not. So, in case, if Shreyas Iyer is ruled out, in the present scenario, one guy who fits the bill is Tilak Varma, because of his versatility, because of his ability to play fast bowling and spin bowling and also because of his ability to switch the gears as and when required. More than anything else, we don't have a left-hander at the top of the order. So all these things will definitely go in favour of Tilak Varma."</p>

<p>On his YouTube channel, R Ashwin stated, "This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So, will they think about Tilak Varma as an option if we don’t have enough backups? The Mumbai Indians (MI) star just has a handful of matches under his belt in the gruelling international circuit. While his start is surely promising, although in the shortest format, ODIs is a different ball game altogether. Look at Suryakumar. He is a T20I giant, however, admits to his woeful ODI returns (averaging a poor 24.33 in 26 games).</p>

There is no shame in admitting that. We talk about honesty, you need to be honest but it's even more important how you work and improve on it."</p>

In addition, when Shankar got injured during the marquee tournament, India backed an exciting young talent like Pant to fill in the No. 4 spot rather than relying on the experienced Rayudu (who occupied the No. 4 spot for majority of 2018). What followed was a messed-up chase in the CWC '19 semi-final where India failed in pursuit of 240, versus eventual runners-up New Zealand, by shuffling the batting order cluelessly.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Surely, Varma has an edge being a left-hander. <p>India skipper Rohit Sharma has always been known for his wit during press conferences and while talking to reporters. Sharma's quick-wittedness&nbsp;was on display during a recent event in the USA when he was asked about the best Pakistan bowler in the current team</p>

<p>"All the pacers in Pakistan team are equally good. I will not name any particular individual. It creates big controversy (not verbatim),” says Rohit in a video shared on Instagram when asked about who's the best Pakistan bowler.</p>

There were two kinds of emotions, one was obviously I was not a part of it, so I was a little disappointed. I decided I was not going to watch the World Cup, but again, the second memory I remember was that India was playing so well, the quarter-finals onwards."</p>

<p>"You know, the big quarter-final was against Australia. I know how the pressure is on all these players when playing these games. I can only imagine the pressure that each player must have gone through at that time, and then the semi-finals against Australia. It was a brilliant finish by Yuvi and Raina at the end," he added.</p>

<p>With ICC ODI World Cup just about two months away, many of the Indian stars might be looking at their last 50-over world cup. Among those who may not feature in the next edition four years later are skipper Rohit Sharma and ace batsman Virat Kohli.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rohit, aged 36, recently spoke about the USA co-hosting the T20I World Cup next year and that he's looking forward to it. The Indian skipper, in a video shared on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, confirmed that he'll be playing in the next year's tournament at least.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“More than just going and enjoying, there is another reason to come here (in the USA). Because you know the World Cup is coming. In June, there will be the T20 World Cup (2024) happening in this part of the world. So, I'm pretty sure everyone is excited. So ya, we look forward to that,” Rohit said.</p>

<p>Notably, the last two games of India's ongoing five-T20I series will be held in the USA.</p>

<p>Former Pakistan pacer Waqar Younis recalled his playing days and revealed that the then Pakistan team used to get under pressure facing India in ODI World Cup games, and added that&nbsp;he believes the Babar Azam-led Men in Green have enough match-winners and can shine bright in the forthcoming 2023 ODI World Cup, to be held in India later this year. Both India and Pakistan are set to lock horns in the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition, which commences on August 30 in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, and will meet once again in the 50-over World Cup.</p>

<h2><strong>'We used to choke against India in World Cups'</strong></h2>

<p>Waqar, a legend of the game who ended with a total of 789 wickets, admitted that during World Cups, the national side used to get bogged down versus India.&nbsp;"In our times, the pressure wasn't that of a big concern as what it seems right now. The lesser you play against a team, that too against a big team - so whenever you'll play them, especially if it is Pakistan and India, the pressure would be immense and tripled. Pressure is always high, but maybe in our times, it was comparatively lesser because we used to play lots of cricket in my early days. But then again, in World Cup, we used to choke against India. Nonetheless, as I said, players these days are handling the pressure definitely better. These match-winners, which I mentioned earlier, they'll win us the game," Waqar told&nbsp;<i>Cricket Pakistan</i>.</p>

In my opinion, it doesn't matter wherever you play, irrespective of whether in India or Pakistan, if you have your process in check and are executing your skills and plans sufficiently well, so I don't think we have any issue. We have match-winners, we have individuals that can win you matches single-handedly, including Babar himself, Shaheen - Fakhar can do wonders, then, of course, we have seen Imam playing great innings, so all-in-all, Pakistan has all the resources definitely, now it's just the matter of putting things together and handling pressure."</p>

<p>Pakistan have never beaten India in the ODI WC history. India lead the Men in Green 7-0 and it will be interesting to see if Pakistan manage to open their account this time around. To date, Babar-led side's participation in the upcoming World Cup is subject to government clearance. The ODI WC is set to commence on October 05 in Ahmedabad with the defending champions England taking on New Zealand. <p>Ashwin further pointed out, “Some of them were perplexed at how we lost to a team that didn’t even qualify for the World Cup. Many people think that India’s only job in international cricket is to win World Cup. The main reason why we consider ourselves favourites to win the World Cup is because of the IPL. ODI matches are very stressful. It will take at least two days for your body to recover. The first two matches in West Indies were played in a gap of 24 hours. Thus, there are more chances of you getting injured. Already we have so many players recovering at the NCA. Bumrah is back after a long hiatus. Prasidh Krishna is back too. So, we have so many injury problems. It seems like people are finding points to blame Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma just for the sake of it."</p>

<p>The 36-year-old Test specialist added,&nbsp;"They are trying different players now because they know what they went through during the last T20 World Cup. After his high-quality knock, Samson said that it is 'challenging' being an Indian cricketer.</p>

<p>Talking to the broadcasters after India posted a mammoth 351/5, Samson said, "Being an Indian cricketer is challenging, I have played domestic cricket for the last 8-9 years and for India, here and there, so it gives you a bit of understanding of playing in different positions. It is the number of overs you get and it is not about batting position so you have to prepare accordingly."</p>
