Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a pretty quiet day at the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction on Saturday as the franchise remained content by focusing on buying their old players back. CSK went after a host of their former players and managed to get them back on day 1 of the IPL 2022 mega auction in Bengaluru.

A lot of eyes were on CSK ahead of the start of the mega auction as they were expected to revamp their squad ahead of the start of the new season. However, the four-time champions once again showed faith in experience over youth as they bought back Robin Uthappa and West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo for a sum of Rs 2 crore (INR 20 million) and Rs 4.4 crore (INR 440 million) respectively.

CSK then managed to bring back experienced Indian batter Ambati Rayudu, who was released by the franchise ahead of the mega auction. CSK spent Rs 6.75 crore (INR 67.5 million) to secure Rayudu's services for the upcoming season. CSK then went on to make Indian pacer Deepak Chahar their most expensive signing in IPL history.

Chahar, who has been an integral part of the CSK setup since joining the side in 2018, saw his price rise from his base price of Rs 2 crore to a whopping Rs 14 crore (INR 140 million) at the mega auction. CSK beat the likes of Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad to the signing of Chahar.

As CSK kept going after their former players and managed to get them back, Delhi Capitals (DC) came up with a hilarious tweet to troll the four-time IPL champions. DC shared a Bollywood inspired meme to take a dig at CSK. "Kuch bhi nahi badla yar aaj bhi sab kuch waise ka waisa hi hai (Nothing has changed mate, everything is still the same)," read the meme.

'Nothing has changed': Delhi Capitals troll CSK as Dhoni & Co. buy back former players at IPL mega auction

The IPL 2022 mega auction is just a few days away. The mega auction, which will take place after four years, is set to be held on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru. Ahead of the auction proceedings, all eyes are on the ten franchises regarding how they will strategise and the players they will target.

Talking about the defending champions MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK), they retained the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni, Ruturaj Gaikwad and all-rounder Moeen Ali. Thus, they released Suresh Raina, Faf du Plessis, Robin Uthappa, Josh Hazlewood, etc. It will be interesting to see how the four-time winners revamp their side in the forthcoming auction.

Ahead of the auction, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra predicted the players CSK will target. Chopra believes CSK will look beyond Mr. IPL Raina (who played a big role in the franchise's initial few title wins) and might look to get the services of experienced players such as Steve Smith, R Ashwin, Shakib Al Hasan.

Not Suresh Raina! Aakash Chopra names players CSK might target in IPL 2022 mega auction

The countdown for the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction 2022 has already begun with as many as 590 players set to go under the hammer at the two-day event in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13. A number of top players from India and overseas will be part of the auction pool with ten teams competing against each other to rope in the best players.

There are a total of 370 Indian and 220 overseas players who will be going under the hammer at the IPL 2022 mega auction. 228 out of the 590 players are capped international stars and many of them have opted for the highest base price of Rs 2 crore (INR 20 million) at the mega auction.

There are some IPL veterans as well as some fresh new talent who have opted to place their name in their Rs 2 crore-category at the mega auction. While most of them are likely to be in demand among the ten teams, some might fail to draw a bid. Here is a look at some of the players from the top base price bracket who might go unsold at the IPL 2022 mega auction.

1) Suresh Raina

Suresh Raina has been one of the best players in the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the years. He was the all-time leading run-getter of the league for several years before being surpassed by Virat Kohli in 2019. Raina has been instrumental in Chennai Super Kings (CSK)'s success in the IPL and is currently the 4th highest run-getter of the league.

However, he has not been on top of his game for quite a while now and has had to deal with fitness issues as well. He was released by CSK ahead of the mega auction this year and might find it difficult to find a buyer at the IPL 2022 mega auction.

2) Imran Tahir

Imran Tahir enjoyed a stunning season with CSK in the year 2019 where he picked up 26 wickets to finish as the highest wicket-taker of the season. However, he managed to make only four appearances for CSK in the next two seasons, scalping only three wickets across both seasons.

At 41, Tahir is one of the oldest players available at the IPL 2022 mega auction and has opted for the base price of Rs 2 crore. While there is no doubt Tahir still has the energy levels of a youngster, any team might find it tough to invest him as the South Africa spinner is past his best at the top level.

3) Ashton Agar

Australian left-arm spinner Ashton Agar, who has never featured in the Indian Premier League before, has set his base price at Rs 2 crore ahead for the IPL 2022 mega auction. While he has failed to cement his spot in the Australian side across formats, Agar has done well in the Big Bash League.

However, the spin all-rounder had gone unsold in the IPL mega auction 2018 where he had a base price of just Rs 50 lakh (INR 5 million). This time around, he had oped to increase his base price a whopping four times the last one but is unlikely to get a buyer at the IPL 2022 mega auction due to the plethora of top spinners available in the pool.

4) Robin Uthappa

Another IPL veteran Robin Uthappa has opted for the highest base price of Rs 2 crore but might find it difficult to secure a deal at the IPL 2022 mega auction. Uthappa was part of CSK's IPL 2021 title-winning squad last season but managed to play only a handful of matches for the MS Dhoni-led side.

He played four matches in IPL 2021, amassing 115 runs. The 36-year-old has been one of the most prolific Indian batters in the league over the years but doesn't have age on his side and is unlikely to be roped in by any franchise. Uthappa has 4722 runs to his name in 193 IPL matches.

5) Adil Rashid

England spinner Adil Rashid had gone unsold at the IPL 2021 player auction where his base price was Rs 1.5 crore (INR 15 million). He was later roped in as a replacement for Jhye Richardson at Punjab Kings. However, he managed to play just one game for the side and ended up conceding 35 runs in 3 overs while going wicket-less.

Rashid has been impressive for England in limited-overs cricket for a while now but he is unlikely to land an IPL deal this year as well.

However, he has not been on top of his game for quite a while now and has had to deal with fitness issues as well. He was released by CSK ahead of the mega auction this year and might find it difficult to find a buyer at the IPL 2022 mega auction. 2) Imran Tahir Imran Tahir enjoyed a stunning season with CSK in the year 2019 where he picked up 26 wickets to finish as the highest wicket-taker of the season. 3) Ashton Agar Australian left-arm spinner Ashton Agar, who has never featured in the Indian Premier League before, has set his base price at Rs 2 crore ahead for the IPL 2022 mega auction. 4) Robin Uthappa Another IPL veteran Robin Uthappa has opted for the highest base price of Rs 2 crore but might find it difficult to secure a deal at the IPL 2022 mega auction. 5) Adil Rashid England spinner Adil Rashid had gone unsold at the IPL 2021 player auction where his base price was Rs 1.5 crore (INR 15 million).

Raina to Tahir: 5 players with highest base price who are likely to go unsold at IPL 2022 mega auction

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have retained captain MS Dhoni, star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, opening batter Ruturaj Gaikwad and Moeen Ali ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction. While many expected Dhoni to be CSK's first-choice retention, the franchise announced that Jadeja has been kept as the first-choice player for Rs 6 crore (INR 160 million) while Dhoni will be taking a salary of Rs 12 crore (INR 120 million).

Dhoni was CSK's highest-paid player from IPL 2018 to 2021 as he was on a contract of Rs 15 crore (INR 150 million) per year. However, Dhoni has taken a pay cut this time around to continue his association with CSK in what are the final few years of his cricketing career. Having already crossed the age of 40, Dhoni is not expected to continue playing for the next full three seasons for CSK.

Robin Uthappa, who was part of CSK's IPL-winning team in 2021, has hinted at who can be Dhoni's successor at CSK once he decides to hang up his boots. While explaining why CSK have made Jadeja their highest-apid player and not Dhoni this time around, Uthappa said it must have been Dhoni's choice and that they have given the Team India all-rounder the due he deserved.

Uthappa also suggested that Jadeja is one of the favourites to take over the captaincy from Dhoni after his retirement from IPL. “I am sure that is MS Dhoni’s doing itself. He knows the value that Jadeja has to the unit. I think from what I understand, Jadeja might be someone who could end up leading the squad in the future as well when MS Dhoni retires. They have given him the due he deserved," Uthappa said on Star Sports.

'It was a no-brainer': Robin Uthappa surprised over Delhi Capitals' decision to release Indian star player

Veteran batter Robin Uthappa believes it won't matter to India captain Virat Kohli whether he wins the T20 World Cup as a skipper or a player. The ongoing T20 World Cup 2021 is all set to be Kohli's last T20I tournament as the captain of the Indian side as he has already announced he will be stepping down as the captain in the shortest format after the conclusion of the showpiece event in UAE and Oman.

Uthappa believes the Indian team will be focused on winning the T20 World Cup 2021 as this will be Kohli's last series as the captain. Nonetheless, Kohli will continue playing as a pure batsman and will be looking to continue giving his all with the willow after leaving captaincy.

"What has more value is as a player he still has a long way to go. Knowing Virat, I don't think it matters to him whether he wins as a captain or as a player. He just wants to win a World Cup and I think that's more important," Uthappa was quoted as saying by India Today.

Kohli had announced his decision to quit T20 captaincy ahead of the start of the T20 World Cup 2021. He has also stepped down from the post of captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL and will not be leading the side from the 2022 season.

Kohli's decision to leave India's T20 captaincy came as a surprise to many and has been talked about a lot. Uthappa's lauded Kohli for maturing as a captain in the last few years and said he has been exceptional as a leader, especially in Test cricket.

Don't think it matters to Virat Kohli if he wins T20 World Cup as a captain or player: Robin Uthappa

IPL 2021 ended in a fitting manner on Friday evening (October 15), with the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) meeting the Eoin Morgan-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the final, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.

The 14th edition of the cash-rich league has been very different from all the preceding seasons as it took place in two halves, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the 14th season lived up to expectations despite the BCCI facing plenty of issues to complete the marquee edition in 2021. The just-concluded season saw many uncapped players standing tall with the bat and ball whereas some known and big names also outperformed for their respective franchises.

While Harshal Patel ended with the Purple Cap, with as many as 32 wickets for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), CSK's Ruturaj Gaikwad earned the elusive Orange Cap after Dhoni & Co. won their fourth championship, beating KKR by 27 runs in the finale.

Ruturaj ended with 636 runs at 45.35 along with a strike-rate of 136.26 following his 32 in the summit clash. His opening partner Faf du Plessis gave him a very tough fight for the cap, however, the 24-year-old youngster topped the run-scoring chart courtesy of a two-run lead.

In this way, Ruturaj has joined some elite names in the list for the Orange Cap winners. It includes some big names such as Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, David Warner (winning it thrice), KL Rahul, etc. Here's the whole Orange Cap list after IPL 2021:

Ruturaj's IPL 14 has been a breakthrough season. Returning with as many as four half-centuries and a hundred and taking on many world-class bowlers from the word go, without dropping much sweat, the CSK opener is now being touted as the next-big-thing in Indian cricket and is expected to be the future of the MS Dhoni-led franchise. Following such a season, many experts believe he will be retained by the Yellow Army ahead of the mega auction, later this year.

When he was almost confirmed to be the owner of the cap, Ruturaj told broadcasters at the halfway stage of the finale, "We did brilliantly to get to 192 by hitting some brilliant sixes. We need to bowl well and back it up with the fielding. I wanted him to hit that six (on Faf coming very close to surpassing him in the Orange Cap list) and add those six important runs."

For the unversed, Faf's 86 helped CSK post a competitive 192-3 versus KKR in the season-finale. While the South African missed out on winning the elusive cap, by a whisker, his knock helped CSK defend the total by 27 runs.

Here's the whole Orange Cap list after IPL 2021: ALSO READ | Virender Sehwag names uncapped Indian star KKR should retain ahead of IPL mega auction Year Orange Cap winner Runs scored 2008 Shaun Marsh 616 2009 Matthew Hayden 572 2010 Sachin Tendulkar 618 2011 Chris Gayle 608 2012 Chris Gayle 733 2013 Michael Hussey 733 2014 Robin Uthappa 660 2015 David Warner 562 2016 Virat Kohli 973 2017 David Warner 641 2018 Kane Williamson 735 2019 David Warner 692 2020 KL Rahul 670 2021 Ruturaj Gaikwad 636 ALSO READ | A look at top 5 highest and lowest totals in IPL finals as CSK battle KKR for elusive trophy Ruturaj's IPL 14 has been a breakthrough season. Always hoped to play for CSK, says Robin Uthappa after memorable IPL triumph

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) locked horns with the Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) in Qualifier 1 of the IPL 2021 edition on Sunday (October 11), at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. Before this, CSK had met the Pant-led franchise twice in the season; losing the clash on both occasions.

Thus, CSK had their back against the wall heading into the Qualifier 1. In addition, they had lost three back-to-back games ahead of the playoffs. Nonetheless, the Yellow Army rose to the occasion and displayed their experience to beat DC by 4 wickets in the final over and progress to their ninth IPL final.

Opting to bowl first, Dhoni & Co. restricted Delhi for 172-5, riding on Prithvi Shaw's 60, Rishabh Pant's 51 not out and Shimron Hetmyer's 37. In reply, Ruturaj Gaikwad's 70 and Robin Uthappa's 42-ball 63 kept them in the hunt, being well-placed at 113-1. While they did struggle from thereon, being reduced to 119-4, and needed 19 off 9 balls, Dhoni's cameo (18* off 6 balls) propelled CSK to a memorable four-wicket win, with two balls to spare.

Suresh Raina or Robin Uthappa? Gautam Gambhir names batsman CSK should persist with in IPL 2021 playoffs

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) might have qualified for the playoffs with a stellar show in the UAE leg of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. However, their middle-order remains a huge concern ahead of the playoffs. Suresh Raina has struggled to score runs consistently in the middle and has been far from his best so far this season.

Raina, who is CSK's leading run-getter of all time in the IPL, has so far managed to score only 160 runs in eleven innings this season. With captain MS Dhoni also struggling in the middle-order, Raina's rough patch can prove to be costly for CSK in the knockout stages of the tournament.

Pollock believes senior batsman Robin Uthappa can be an ideal replacement for Raina if CSK wants to drop the veteran left-hander. Uthappa, who was roped in from Rajasthan Royals ahead of the start of IPL 2021, is yet to make his debut for CSK.

Uthappa was bought as a backup opener but Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis' brilliant form means he has been left to warm the bench. Pollock wondered if Uthappa can be given a go by CSK, who don't like to make too many changes in the playing XI throughout the tournament.

"I wonder if they will give Robin Uthappa a chance. CSK are a team that doesn't like to make big changes. The longer it goes on, the more you feel they can't actually make a change for the knockouts unless they make it sooner or later. I'm sure he will be keen to have a go. But if they keep winning, they will want everyone firing," Pollock said on Cricbuzz.

Pollock also reckoned that Raina, who has been one of the best fielders in the world over the past few years, hasn't looked at his best on the field and might be carrying a niggle.

"He hasn't been able to find his touch. He looks like he might be carrying a bit of a niggle, he doesn't look that pacey, that's what we are so used to: brilliant fielding over the years, contributing with his off-spin and smashing the ball out of the ground; we haven't seen that. No surprise that they promoted him to No.3; that was in a bid to get him some form under the belt," Pollock added.
The CSK skipper has already drawn curtains on his international career but continues to lead the three-time champions in IPL. Uthappa said Gaikwad's demeanour is much like that of his captain.

"I think the character showed from Rutu (Ruturaj Gaikwad), I think is unbelievable. I think he is an incredible talent that we (CSK) are lucky enough to have and his demeanor is much like Mahi (Dhoni) - calm, composed, chilled out, and a really nice human being. I really like him, he's a great kid," Uthappa said in a video posted by CSK on Twitter.

'His demeanour is much like Mahi': Robin Uthappa compares incredibly talented CSK star to MS Dhoni

Not many had hopes from MS Dhoni-led Team India when they commenced their journey in the inaugural T20 World Cup, in South Africa in 2007. However, Dhoni & Co. created history and stunned the cricketing fraternity by winning the inaugural title, beating Pakistan in the tournament-finale in Johannesburg on September 24.

The Men in Blue defeated the likes of England, South Africa, Australia and Pakistan (twice) to be crowned as the T20 WC champions in the 2007 edition and will now hope to win their second title when the upcoming T20 World Cup starts in the UAE, from October 19.

Ahead of the mega event and IPL 14's final leg, in the UAE, Chennai Super Kings (CSK)'s Robin Uthappa recalled a master move from Dhoni during the 2007 T20 WC clash between India and South Africa. Both sides had locked horns in the Super Eight stage, which was a virtual quarter-final, where India beat the Proteas by 37 runs to book a place in the semis.

Recalling how Dhoni planned Graeme Smith's dismissal, Uthappa told on the 22 Yarns With Gaurav Kapoor podcast recently, "Just the ball before (Graeme Smith's dismissal)... , MS Dhoni moved (Dinesh) Karthik from third slip to a fielding position between fourth slip and gully. The very next ball the DK took that catch. It's nuts. I don't know how he(MS Dhoni) does that. I think he is one guy who is truest to his instincts."

Uthappa also spoke regarding the last over of the 2007 T20 WC, where Joginder Sharma defended 13 runs versus Pakistan to lead India to a memorable win. "The choice was between Joginder Sharma and Harbhajan Singh for the last over. At the time, Joginder put his hand up, and MS also backed his instinct and gave the ball to the one who wanted to bowl. That's what Mahi did the whole tournament, he just backed his instincts. Joginder was obviously nervous."

"Sreesanth had astigmatism and the lens we got in 2007 wasn't of great quality at that time. We were just hoping that Sreesanth wore his lens as he used to drop catches when not wearing. But it was all destiny, the way he took that catch," he added.

IPL 2021's second and final leg is set to commence from September 19. The first-half was held in India amid Covid-19 concerns and had to be postponed indefinitely in the wake of the second wave of the novel coronavirus in early May. With the final leg set to begin soon in mid-September, many franchises have reached the UAE and started their preparations.

The MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are usually the first ones to kickoff their training. This time around, the Yellow Army reached UAE early this month, on August 13.
Amid the regular training and gym sessions, the Yellow Army had a get-together, also comprising their families, and bonded over dinner in the UAE. The official Instagram handle of CSK shared the video -

“I remember around 2009 to 2011, it was constant and I would deal with that on a daily basis. There were times where I wasn’t even thinking about cricket, it was probably the farthest thing in my mind,” he said.

IPL 2018: Players to watch out for in Kolkata vs Mumbai clash

Explosive Kolkata batsman Robin Uthappa feels cricket is going through a paradigm shift to a power game and any total on board now looks chaseable.

"The changes in the game are dynamic. It is changing as a sport, anything looks like chaseable, I feel cricket is shifting to a power game now so chasing is the choice. There is a paradigm shift in the nature of the sport," said Uthappa, who played a 36-ball 48-run knock to chase down Rajasthan's total of 160-8 on a slow wicket.

With three wins from five matches, Uthappa said he is satisfied with KKR's progress in the tournament.

"We are happy in the position we are. We are at the top and might have played a game more but we played good cricket. It is important to peak at the right time," he said.

"It is a two-halve tournament. Initially we were looking to qualify for the playoffs, you need the momentum. After six games we would have a nice break so we are quite happy where we are. Every game is important for us," said Uthappa.

The 32-year-old was also happy with his batting form after making useful contributions in the middle order.

"I did not have a good domestic season but I always felt I was striking the ball well. That is what I feel now. Need to get better and better," said Uthappa.

He also praised Man of the Match Nitesh Rana, who has scored 162 in five matches so far.

"I feel Rana is a very fine batsman with a mature head on his shoulders. We have not shuffled much with batting order and the top three have been almost the same. We tried but had to revert soon to same top order," he said.

"If Sunil Narine and 'lynny' click at the top and likes of Rana, I, Dinesh Karthik and Russel coming in things do look nice. That has been working for us."

When asked to compare between two captains -- Gautam Gambhir and now Dinesh Karthik, Uthappa said: "They were different kind of personalities. Karthik is more composed and thinks a lot but also gives space to players to play with their instincts while Gambhir is more proactive."

On the other hand, Rajasthan captain Ajinkya Rahane blamed himself for the loss against KKR.

"I feel it was a different wicket from what we played on against Delhi. It was slow and ball was also keeping low. I feel it was my responsibility to take that innings forward," he said.

"It is hard to recover from a slow start because T20 is all about one or two big overs. I was batting well at the other and wanted to continue till the 14th or 15th over."

Rahane also refused to blame his bowlers for the debacle.

"Not really, our bowlers have done a good job in all three matches. In T20 sometimes you go for runs but we have a good combination. When you lose people start talking about bad bowling or batting," he said, adding that the fielding was not up to the mark and there was scope for much improvement.
