Leonardo DiCaprio praises Martin Scorsese's epic 'reckoning with past' at Cannes 2023

During the early 20th century, the Osage Nation, a Native American tribe living on an Oklahoma reservation, experienced a harrowing period filled with fear and violence. This turbulent era, known as the Osage Indian murders, serves as the backdrop for Martin Scorsese's highly anticipated film, Killers of the Flower Moon. Based on journalist David Grann's non-fiction book of the same name, the movie is scheduled to make its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, presented in the Out of Competition category. Scorsese and Eric Roth have penned the screenplay.

With a budget of $200 million, the film boasts of an impressive cast, including frequent collaborators of Scorsese such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. Joining them are Jesse Plemons, Lily Gladstone, Brendan Fraser, and John Lithgow, among other notable actors.

Here is an explainer of the whole saga. I have tried to tell the story while avoiding spoilers for the film even though many of these events are more than a century old.

Osage Nation and Osage Indian murders

The Osage Nation refers to both the Native American tribe and the region in Oklahoma that served and still serves as their homeland. Just like other Native American peoples in the Americas Osage Nation had experienced a series of challenges and injustices. They had been relocated from their ancestral lands through a series of treaties with the United States government.

But their fate took a significant turn in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the discovery of massive oil reserves beneath their lands. They had retained ownership of the mineral rights to their lands, and thus became wealthy almost overnight. They received royalties from the oil companies for the extraction of oil from their properties.

However, this sudden money also attracted a dark underbelly of greed, corruption, and exploitation. The Osage faced numerous challenges as unscrupulous individuals sought to take advantage of their riches. They were subjected to fraud, theft, and manipulation as outsiders tried to gain control over their wealth.

Then, in the early 1920s, a series of inexplicable disappearances and deaths plagued the Osage community. Members of the tribe began to die under suspicious circumstances, and fear and paranoia spread like wildfire. One by one, Osage men and women were found murdered, their deaths shrouded in mystery. The community became gripped by terror as loved ones vanished and the culprits remained elusive.

These murders became known as the Osage murders or the Reign of Terror.

Newly formed Bureau of Investigation steps in to investigate

The magnitude of the crimes prompted the newly formed Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which was called just BOI or Bureau of Investigation then, to intervene. This was FBI's first major case. Enter Tom White, a former Texas Ranger assigned to the case. White, accompanied by his team, delved into the intricate web of deceit that surrounded the Osage murders. They soon discovered a deeply sinister plot driven by one of the most common motivations imaginable: greed.

Behind the murders lay a conspiracy rooted in a system designed to systematically strip the Osage of their wealth. This web of corruption involved unscrupulous individuals who would stop at nothing to seize the vast fortunes that the tribe possessed. As the investigation deepened, it became clear that the murders were not isolated incidents but rather part of a carefully orchestrated campaign.

In their pursuit of justice, White and his team encountered countless obstacles. Witness intimidation, tampered evidence, and widespread corruption were just a few of the challenges they faced. Even J. Edgar Hoover, the first Director of FBI, was in a rush to close the case. But White remained firm. As the investigation continued, he unearthed a vast network of co-conspirators, including white settlers, oil tycoons, and even members of the Osage community itself. The scale of the conspiracy was staggering, and it became apparent that uncovering the truth would require unwavering determination and immense courage.

The investigation marked a turning point for the Bureau of Investigation, establishing its reputation as a capable and effective law enforcement agency. The success of the investigation helped solidify the FBI's authority and set the stage for its future involvement in high-profile criminal cases.

The case also had a broader impact on the legal landscape. The case exposed the need for federal intervention in cases where local authorities were compromised or incapable of delivering justice. It highlighted the importance of protecting the rights and safety of marginalised communities, such as the Osage people, and addressing systemic corruption within law enforcement.

Actor Vijay Varma may be earning laurels for his performances in the recently released web series Dahaad and the last year's critically acclaimed Darlings, but the actor credits some acting stalwarts as his inspiration.
“I knew Sebastian, of course. Not well, but I have worked with him a little bit; had seen a couple of his shows, and worked on The Irishman with him. So, we had a reading and then after that, I pretty much was like "let's do it - just had to find the time and when to do it.”

He further spoke about the script “I liked it and saw that the script had a personal element from Sebastian's experience, obviously. And, after getting to know Laura Terruso a little bit, I realised her background; she was from Brooklyn, Italian-American - they both [Sebastian and Laura] knew the world (from the movie standpoint), and they are from the world.
Sharon Stone has termed many of her Hollywood co-stars as 'misogynists'. Stone recently opened up about her experience of working in films during an interview with Variety where she talked about the misogyny she had faced in the film industry in the early phase of her career.

"I’ve worked with some of the biggest stars in the business, who will literally talk through my close-up, telling me what they think I should do. They’re so misogynistic," the actress said.

However, she immediately added that Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci were among a few colleagues that treated her fairly. "Now, that is not Robert De Niro. That is not Joe Pesci, that is not those guys," Stone confirmed.
Stone had worked with De Niro and Pesci on Martin Scorsese's film 'Casino' which was released in 1995. The film focused on each of the characters’ lives in Las Vegas in the ‘70s and ‘80s.
Stone added how misogynists affected her work and performance on film sets. "They just will not listen to me and will not allow me to affect their performance with my performance. That’s not great acting. I get that you’re great and everybody thinks you’re wonderful. But listening, being present for those fractured moments, is really the human experience."
The 31-year-old is currently under arrest pending charges. She was allegedly collared after some police officers from the NYPD's 19th Precinct public safety team started following her at around 2.30 AM on Monday and allegedly saw her bust into Robert's seven-bedroom home on East 65th Street.

Before entering the actor's house, she allegedly checked whether other houses on the same road were unlocked. She was already wanted by law enforcement for a string of other burglaries and is said to have previously been arrested about 26 times.

Mail Online reported police officers watched her enter Robert's home and followed her inside, where, according to ABC 7, they found her using his iPad and trying to swipe the actor's Christmas gifts and put them in a bag.

The 79-year-old 'Heat' actor is said to have awoken to the commotion and came downstairs, but a police official told the Post there was "no interaction" between De Niro and Aviles, and added, "She was stealing Christmas presents."
Robert De Niro on 'Big' casting and more to Jimmy Fallon on 'The Tonight Show'

Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro will star in `About My Father`, an upcoming film that is loosely based on the life of standup comic Sebastian Maniscalco.

As per Variety, the forthcoming movie will be directed by Laura Terruso, who was behind the hit Netflix YA film `Work It`. The script for `About My Father` will be written by Maniscalco and Austen Earl. De Niro is set to play Maniscalco`s father Salvo in the film, reuniting the pair after first appearing together in ace film director Martin Scorsese`s mob drama `The Irishman`.

Tina Turner, Jay-Z, Go-Go's selected for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

The film`s story will follow Sebastian as he tells his old-school Italian immigrant father that he is going to propose to his all-American girlfriend, and Salvo (De Niro) insists on crashing a weekend with her parents. A culture clash and hilarity ensues. Nathan Kahane, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, shared that production on the film will begin later in 2021.

Kahane also spoke about De Niro joining the film and said, "The way Sebastian talks about his father, Salvo sounds to us like the type of guy who thinks that Robert De Niro should play him in a movie. So we thought, why not?"Kahane added, "Actually, Robert De Niro is incredibly selective about the projects he chooses, so we are thrilled that he responded so strongly to this hilarious and heartfelt screenplay. He`ll make a fantastic and funny pairing with Sebastian."

Depth of Field, the company behind Lulu Wang`s `The Farewell` and Disney`s upcoming `Pinocchio` remake with Tom Hanks, is producing `About My Father`. Depth of Field executives Chris Weitz, Paul Weitz, and Andrew Miano will serve as producers, with Judi Marmel serving as an executive producer. James Myers and Chelsea Kujawa are overseeing production for the studio. Phil Strina negotiated the deal on behalf of the studio.

Tina Turner, Jay-Z, Go-Go's selected for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame The film`s story will follow Sebastian as he tells his old-school Italian immigrant father that he is going to propose to his all-American girlfriend, and Salvo (De Niro) insists on crashing a weekend with her parents. He`ll make a fantastic and funny pairing with Sebastian." Depth of Field, the company behind Lulu Wang`s `The Farewell` and Disney`s upcoming `Pinocchio` remake with Tom Hanks, is producing `About My Father`. Ellen DeGeneres to end TV show after 19 years, says she needs 'break from talking' Maniscalco rose to fame with the release of several popular standup specials, including `Sebastian Live`, `What`s Wrong With People?`, `Aren`t You Embarrassed?` and `Stay Hungry`. In addition to `The Irishman`, his screen credits include `Green Book` and an upcoming still-untitled film by Ray Romano. Meanwhile, De Niro`s most recent film `The War With Grandpa` was a pandemic-era box office hit, generating USD 40 million in global ticket sales.De Niro will next appear in Scorsese`s `Killers of the Flower Moon', which co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio and is set up at Apple.
