Speaking on Star Sports' Selection Day show, Shastri opined, "See when when you're talking of a player (KL Rahul) who's not played and is recovering from injury. To think of him in the XI of the Asia Cup, you're asking a little too much of the player himself. And then you're talking keeping. When a guy comes from an injury, the range of movement and things of that sort, so that's a no no."

Thus, Shastri feels India can opt for Ishan Kishan's services, an attacking left-hander who can play at the top or in the middle and keep wickets instead of rushing for Rahul's return. Rohit Sharma-led India are yet to announce the squad for the mega event, where they open their campaign on September 2 versus Pakistan. The seven-time winners are placed in Group A with Pakistan and Nepal.

With less than four months to go before the start of the World Cup, India will be awaiting good news on a few names on the treatment table. As things stand, Rishabh Pant is likely to miss the World Cup as he has not made enough progress to be a match fit. He was the only untouchable left-hander player in the top six, but having gotten injured in a car crash in December 2022, he will be a big miss.

Notably, there was only a week's gap between the IPL 2023 final and the WTC Final this year which India lost to Australia by 209 runs. This was also India's second consecutive defeat in the marquee event.

"See, that's never going to happen," Shastri opined on Rohit's statement in a chat with Star Sports.

"Let's be realistic here. You're not going to get those 20 days. And if that's the case then you've got to miss IPL," said the former coach. "So, the choice is yours and it's up to the establishment as well. I'm sure the BCCI will review this in the future, if a World Test Championship [final] is going to come after an IPL every time in the month of June, then for that season, if your team qualifies for the final, there should be certain clauses put to franchises."

"Yeah, ideally, we would want to have a good time in hand to prepare, give enough rest to the bowlers," he had said. "Sometimes, it can be tough because playing T20 cricket, you completely bowl different lengths, different lines, and a lot of change-ups.

"And then Test cricket, obviously, requires a lot of discipline, hitting that area consistently and challenging the batsmen - but again, you know Shami, Siraj, Umesh they all are experienced, they obviously know how to prepare themselves and get ready for a game like this. But in an ideal scenario, yes, I would prefer it if we have 20-25 days to prepare for a game like this," added the skipper.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri blasted senior batters Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara for throwing away their wickets on day 4 of the World Test Championship (WTC) Final. Shastri was particularly miffed with Pujara for playing a shot out of his character.

“Never expected that shot from Pujara…that is get-out shot and he is back in the hut. It’s not the scoreboard pressure but poor shot selection.”

“Rohit and Pujara must be kicking themselves for the shots they played,” Shastri said on Star Sports after the end of play on day 4, reported news agency PTI.

Notably, Pujara got out trying to be cheeky as he attempted to upper cut Pat Cummins in the very next over after Rohit's dismissal. He scored 27 before heading back to the dressing room.

After two quick dismissals, India were left three down for 93 with Australia having the upper hand but Virat Kohli, who finished the day unbeaten on 44 and Ajinkya Rahane, who scored 20 not out, kept the Kangaroos from jumping too high.

The duo has already added 71 runs for the fourth wicket and if India were to chase 444-run target, they both have to bat long on day 5. Shastri also agrees to same, saying India batsmen need to 'weather the storm in first session' to give themselves a shot at the title.

“Weathering the storm in the first session will be the key tomorrow. That is where the sting, if all, will be (on the pitch),” added Shastri. India were 164/3 at the end of day 4, needing 280 runs in maximum 90 overs to win the WTC Final.

WTC Final: 'India or franchise cricket,' fuming Ravi Shastri wants players to decide their priority

India and Australia are ready to face each another in their first ICC final since the two sides met in ODI WC Final in 2003. The two cricketing powerhouses will, however, meet this time for the Test supremacy - in World Test Championship (WTC) Final, set to be played in England from June 7.

India, who are in their second consecutive final in two editions of the tournament, will be looking to shake off the disappointment of last time and would be looking to build on their recent Border-Gavaskar trophy Test victory over the Baggy Green in the title clash.

For India, the most encouraging thing is form of their ace batter and former skipper Virat Kohli. The batsman, who was not at his best since last two-three years, has roared back to the form in the recent months. Former India coach Ravi Shastri also thinks that if Kohli gets going, it'll be fun.

“Virat Kohli will wake up differently if the match is against Australia, he smells the coffee much earlier if it's Australia, so if he gets going, gets to 20, then we will have some fun,” Shastri said ahead of the title clash.

Notably, in the Border-Gavaskas trophy which concluded before the IPL 2023, Kohli recorded his first hundred in roughly four years. He then carried over his form for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL, scoring 639 runs in 14 games at an average of 53.25 with two hundreds.

In the latest WTC cycle though, Kohli played 16 Test matches and scored 869 runs at an average of 32 with three fifties and one hundred in 28 innings. The record is good enough for many players but not Virat Kohli who has 8,146 runs in 108 Test to his name at an average of 48 with 28 hundreds and 28 fifties in 183 innings.

"I would say if you look at pace attack, if Bumrah was there, I would say it was equal with an attack of Mohammed Shami, Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. But that Aussie attack with Starc, Cummins, may be the match fitness that will come into play," Shastri said at the ICC's 'Afternoon with Test Legends' event.

"Match fitness might come into play," Shastri reckoned. "You need some cricket behind you and staying in the park for six hours for five days is different from bowling in nets for two hours every day," he further opined.&nbsp; "Shami might be key as he has been playing a lot of cricket," Shastri further asserted. Shami ended with 28 scalps in IPL 2023 and won the Purple Cap. Thus, his form certainly keeps India in good stead heading into the marquee finale.

Shastri, who was in the Indian dressing room when Virat Kohli-led India lost a rain-marred WTC final in Southampton in 2021,&nbsp;also pointed out that the second cycle of the WTC has been much different.

"When you don't win, it hurts as you are not there to fill in numbers. But if I look in hindsight, compared to that World Test Championship cycle, it's chalk and cheese. There was COVID-19, quarantines. It was hard on players, 14 days in isolation and then seven days of training. Here both teams have had time to prepare and this one will be a good contest," he added.

Whoever wins the WTC final will become the first-ever team to have won all ICC events (ICC ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy, WTC) at least once.

"The selectors must be closely monitoring Jaiswal and he will soon play for India. The best thing about him is the way he's raised his graph. There is power in his game, there's timing. He has very bright future prospects," Shastri said in a conversation with Star Sports.&nbsp;

Shastri's comments come on the back of Jaiswal's record-breaking innings of 98 not-out off just 47 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders in Royals' last match. Jaiswal had hit his fifty off just 13 balls in the match - the second fastest in T20 overall. His takedown of KKR bowlers with 12 fours and five sixes helped his team win by nine wickets - boosting their net run-rate and playoff chances.

IPL 2023: 'He will soon...:' Ravi Shastri's bold remark on RR batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal's future

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri says that Hardik Pandya is going to be India's next T20I captain in the long run and the change could come as soon as after the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Shastri opined that, "the next two World Cups [after the ODI WC] are T20 cricket. He's already [standby] captain of India [in T20Is], so he will continue unless he is not fit. I think they [the selectors] will look into a new direction. There's a lot of talent among the youth at the moment. You might have a pretty much new team; there will be some new faces if not a new team."

Shastri explained his logic behind the selection of Hardik as skipper and evoked MS Dhoni's appointment as skipper in 2007 as an example.

"I feel they will go the 2007 route, where they will identify talent, and Hardik will have lots of choices when it comes to the selection," Shastri said. "Because his ideas will be different; he has played the IPL as a captain of a franchise and seen a lot of the other players. He will have his inputs," said Shastri.

When asked about the workload management issue, Shastri was clear about it as he said that Panday isn't playing all three formats so it shouldn't be a problem.

"It is not that he is playing three formats. "Everything now is separate. You have Test matches, so the moment a Test series comes, he gets a corridor of a month to rest and recuperate. He is supremely confident about his own ability. The fact that he is fully fit now makes a massive difference. Form plays an important role. Kohli has been one of Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) top performers with the bat, scoring&nbsp;419 runs in 10 games (fifth-most overall), but his strike rate has not impressed many. He has struck at&nbsp;135.16, but in his side's encounter versus the Delhi Capitals (DC), he slowed down considerably as his inning progressed and returned with a 46-ball 55 striking at 119.57. While he has hit six half-centuries this season, he has often been criticised for slowing down in the middle overs.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has opened up on Mumbai Indians and India skipper Rohit Sharma’s form after the latter has been going through a tough phase of form. Rohit, who is yet to fire in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season has been at the gunpoint of several critics with Shastri mentioning different reasons for his debacle of form. Despite criticism, Rohit continues to take charge of the MI side while he will also lead India in the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final in June.

"The resources that you had two or three years ago isn't quite the same. The challenges as a captain might have doubled for him. The work as a captain would have doubled as opposed to two years ago when everything was nice, set - go out there and do the job," Shastri said about Rohit's captaincy while he spoke on ESPNcricinfo.

So far in the IPL 2023, Rohit has scored&nbsp; 184 runs with only fifty to his name and clearly has been a shadow of himself. He has averaged 18.40 so far in the IPL 2023 and has been striking at 127.

Interestingly, not since 2020 has Rohit hit multiple fifties in his IPL which is another major concern for the franchise and the India skipper.

"And then comes the challenge of how do you get them [the team] going, how do you motivate that bunch, how do you create a combination, how do you see who is the best in that lot to fit in and deliver at a certain stage of the game,” added Shastri.

Commentating at IPL, Shastri also believes the dip in form has taken its toll on the captaincy of Rohit. Mumbai Indians finished bottom of the IPL in 2022 standings while the current season is an upgrade but with ups and downs. They have not been in the top four of the IPL for the entire season and will need to finish strongly to claim a playoff berth.

"If you start getting on a purple patch where you are scoring runs, the job as a captain becomes much easier, the body language on the field changes, that energy on the field is different as opposed to when you are not getting runs. You can go flat no matter who you are," Shastri said.

Mumbai Indians and Rohit will next take the field on Tuesday against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium with a win for either side firing them to the top four.

Moreover, with the addition of franchise-based T20 leagues around the world, this idea of the 50-over format dying a slow death is becoming a reality. Both feel the expansion of the T20 format and IPL, in particular, will influence players, which will be to such an extent that they will sign long-term contracts that will see them playing for multiple leagues. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s Runorder, Moody, who had coached IPL franchise SunRisers Hyderabad in the past, feels with IPL owners buying stakes and teams in different leagues, their footprint is growing, and they will influence the upcoming generation.

The reason we start talking about this is because each IPL team is looking for a bigger footprint in the game. It might not be financially beneficial for them to be doing that, but they are looking at the long-term benefit of having a greater stake of the time in the calendar year," Moody told ESPNcricinfo.

Meanwhile, the ODI World Cup winner - Shastri opines that cricket is going the football way, and in times to come, players will get involved in franchise cricket throughout the year; and it would just be around the World Cup time when teams will release players, and they would assemble to play a few bilateral games.

He also said that only a handful of teams will continue to play Tests, with others trying to succeed in the shorter formats.

"That really tells me that there are only going to be few countries that are going to be playing Test cricket, as simple as that," Moody said. "Rest are going to focus on white-ball cricket, and I will add another format that may replace the 50-over cricket, and that may be T10. I see that as a potential, not a game-changer, but a movement towards the next step ahead for the IPL to consider if they want to expand what is an incredibly successful property," Moody further added.

The most prolific run-scorer in the game, Sachin made his international debut against Pakistan in 1989 and went on to represent India for the next 24 years, playing his last game in Indian colours against Pakistan in the 2012 Asia Cup. Two batters, KL Rahul and Riyan Parag, have been heavily criticised for their unimpactful approach during the low-scoring tie in Jaipur on Wednesday night. Former India coach Ravi Shastri has come down hard on both&nbsp;for not showing the right intent, which eventually changed the course of the result. While he slammed KL for taking too long before getting going, he questioned Parag’s run of form during RR’s chase.

LSG batted first against Rajasthan, and KL Rahul played a first-over maiden against Trent Boult - that raised questions all across. More so, that he even attained an unwanted record to his name by becoming a batter to play the most number of first-over maidens (11) in IPL since 2014. Riding on that, he took longer than expected to get going, and even after getting dropped, the right-handed batter failed to capitalise, scoring just 39 off 32 balls. This knock drew a lot of criticism, with Shastri also jumping onto it, saying,&nbsp;

"Absolutely (needs to get the strike up). All that talk about 160, I don't buy it. When you have two chances, if you convert that 39 to 60 or 70, 160 becomes 175. You need someone in the top 3 to carry on and play that long inning," Ravi Shastri told Star Sports after the match.

While chasing, Rajasthan, who recently defeated Gujarat Titans in one of the best chases this season, failed to hunt down a mediocre 155 despite remaining in a strong position during the chase.&nbsp;

They got off to a great start with both openers doing well, but following a cluster of wickets in the middle overs, RR&nbsp;were left playing the chasing game. With this,&nbsp;Riyan Parag and Devdutt Padikkal, both of whom were expected to finish the job for the team, failed to do as RR lost the game by ten runs.

Parag, who is already in hot water for his poor series of scores this season, didn’t get going and took too many balls to settle down, which eventually put pressure on both in the end.

“They lost Samson, they lost Buttler and Jaiswal, but still they had enough, a lot of depth. I think that period of play when Riyan Parag came in and the way he played his first eight balls changed the course of the match. Padikkal, at the other end, lost his rhythm as well.

“Runs started coming in singles, and there was a period of 28 balls that stage without a boundary. When you go through that much time without a boundary, you are asking for trouble,” Shastri told to Star Sports.

Despite losing the match, RR is still at the top of the table with four wins from six games, while LSG, who also has similar points but a lower NRR, is second.&nbsp;

His knock consisted of five boundaries. His runs came at a strike rate of 125.81. In his 77 matches in IPL career, which has seen him represent Gujarat and formerly Kolkata Knight Riders, Gill has scored 2,016 runs at an average of 32.52. He has scored his runs at a strike rate of 126.24. Fifteen half-centuries have come out of his bat in IPL with the best score of 96.

Gill's best season came last year when he played a key role in Gujarat Titans' triumph in their maiden IPL 2022 season. Last season, he scored 483 runs in 16 innings at an average of 34.50. He scored four half-centuries last season, with the best score of 96.

"If we look at what's happened till now, then the two left-handers, Tilak Varma and Sudharshan, one is 20 years old, the other is 21, they have been a lot of fun to watch. Because they seem to have a future, their temperament and maturity which we can see shows the potential they have to be good players," Shastri told Star Sports.

Tilak Varma was the find of the season for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022. He scored 397 runs in 14 matches at an average of over 36 and SR of over 131 with two fifties and the best score of 61. In the first game of IPL 2023, he scored an unbeaten 84* off 46 balls against RCB in a losing cause, carrying the entire MI batting line-up on his back.

In 37 T20s, he has scored 1,159 runs at an average of 38.63 with a strike rate of over 139.30. His best score in the format is 84*. He has 10 half-centuries in the format.

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan also gave his opinion on who has impressed him the most in the IPL 2023.

"One is definitely Tilak Varma, he has impressed us a lot. He batted well last year and has performed this year as well. Even his attitude is very good. He looks like he can be a leader in the future. And the second is Jurel, the way Jurel has batted from his first innings, I couldn't even imagine the quality of his shots under pressure. So that is one boy who has impressed, even though it's still in the early stages, but these are promising signs."

Shastri was asked what was special about Vijay Shankar that got him selected for the 2019 ICC Men's ODI World Cup.

He said the player was picked up both for his bowling and batting abilities.

"In my opinion, the selectors thinking was such that, just like his innings that we have seen in this year's IPL, that kind of innings plus his bowling is a big factor in his getting selected. When he got injured during the 2019 World Cup, he got a fracture on his toe and was out for a long time. He has the talent, he has worked hard to get back to his best, and you know, at that time even Hardik was facing a lot of injury issues, so India was looking for a player who could replace Hardik and give at least two or three overs to the team and bat well, so it was always to keep Shankar ready in case Hardik got injured so that there was a quality replacement."

Shastri also spoke on who may break Virat Kohli's record for the most runs in a single season.

Shastri said it has to be an opening batsman, because only then will he get many opportunities to score runs.

"I feel it is Subhman Gill because he is in good form and also because he plays top of the order. So he will get a good number of opportunities to score runs. The pitches are good, so if he can score 80-100 runs consecutively in two or three innings, then at that point in time only he will already have 300-400 runs. According to me, it is very difficult to break the record, because 900 plus runs is huge but one thing is opening batsmen will get two extra matches and two extra innings, so opening batsmen can only break this record if it is possible."

And no one talks about it. But when we lose in Asia Cup, then the tournament comes into the picture. Why? That's why I'm saying, the effort should always be there," he said.

"Everyone wants to win but what's important is to put your best foot forward. And see what happens. Sometimes you don't play your best cricket and still you'll win the game but you're going to have to be extremely lucky for that to win a World Cup. Very few teams win a World Cup by not playing well on that day. Very rare," he further added.

Notably, India have won just one ICC trophy after their 2011 ICC World Cup win - the 2013 Champions Trophy. India, however, have played in the semifinals of 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cup editions and lost the final of 2017 Champion Trophy to Pakistan.

In T20Is, after winning the inaugural ICC T20I World Cup in 2007, India lost in the final of 2014 and were a semifinalist in 2016 and 2022 editions. India also reached the final of inaugural ICC World Test Championship in 2021 but lost of New Zealand.
