“It's playing on their mind, confidence-wise. You can't go to the negatives. Think about the positives," Shastri said on ICC Review podcast.

“Think about what you did in Australia last time around and take it ahead from there. Put what happened behind you. These are different conditions. And some of the tracks in Australia when you get in are probably the best to bat, So I think it will be totally different, the conditions when they get out there,” he added.

It is to be noted that India haven't lost a Test series against Australia since 2014. The two sides have played four Test series since then, two in India and two in Australia, and India have managed to win all four of them. Shastri was the team's coach during both their series victories in Australia.

India, however, have a lot to ponder ahead of the first Test as they will be without regular skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.

Rohit is away after the recent birth of his second child and will be available from the second Test, while Gill was injured during practice and is not expected to play in Perth. In Rohit's absence, vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah will lead the side.

After Perth, India play the day-night second Test in Adelaide from December 6-10. The third Test will be played at the Gabba in Brisbane from December 14-18 before the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from December 26-30. Ahead of departing for Australia, Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed the media in Mumbai, shedding light on who could replace Rohit at the top for the Perth Test should he remain unavailable for selection. Hinting at it could be KL Rahul, Gautam said players like Rahul can bat anywhere in the lineup, something Shastri agrees on.&nbsp;

He said regardless of his form, KL has performed in Australia before and with his feet moving nicely, he can take up that number three slot.&nbsp;

"Sometimes runs are not important, but if a player is moving well, and if the feet are moving nicely, and you try and understand his (KL Rahul) game, and you realize if he has the game for those conditions if he has the right kind of shots for those kinds of pitches. "So it'll be interesting to see how he goes. I think he's got the tools, he's got the goods for the job, and he's got the experience," he further said.

Meanwhile, much like last year when he got a chance after the first four matches, Shami suffered the same fate during the 2019 edition, wherein he got picked for the first time during the mid-tournament.

“In 2019, I did not play the first 4-5 games. In the next game, I took a hat-trick, then picked up a five-wicket haul and then four wickets in the next game. A similar happened in 2023. I did not play in the first few games and then picked a fifer, then four wickets and then a five-wicket haul again,” Shami said during the show.

“The one thing I keep wondering is every team needs players who can perform well. I took 13 wickets in three matches. What more do you expect from me? I neither have questions nor do I have answers. I can only prove myself when I get the opportunity.&nbsp;

Two former West Indies pacers, Sir Curtly Ambrose and Sir Andy Roberts, met Bumrah on the sidelines of a Test match (in Antigua), saying the India fast bowler could open the bowling during their era for what he brings to the table.&nbsp;

Former India coach Ravi Shastri recalled ringing ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah early during his international career to talk about him making his Test debut. Even before Bumrah got introduced to red-ball cricket, the fans worldwide labelled him as a ‘white-ball specialist’ for what he brought to the table with his Yorkers in the shortest format.

Jasprit Bumrah is now the number one Test bowler in the world following his latest exploits during the ongoing Test series against England. After India went down in the first Test in Hyderabad despite winning most sessions, at least until day three, they needed a superhuman effort from someone to puncture England’s Bazball approach and make a comeback. Bumrah was that player in the next Test in Vizag.

“After watching this Test series, the Indian cricket establishment should make sure to never play just two Tests,” Shastri said.

“If some country invites you for a two-Test series, say, ‘We won’t go’. Two-Test match series are a waste of time. It’s neither here nor there. The focus should be on either playing T20Is and Test matches or ODIs and Test matches. They could have easily played 3 T20Is and 3 Tests [on this tour],” he added.

With India opting to send an A-Team for the shadow unofficial two-match series instead of playing a warm-up game, Shastri noted that all concerned parties should be on the same page on providing the best players and pitches for the practice matches so that the visiting team can get good practice.&nbsp;

“It should be a conversation between boards: ‘If we are coming for three Tests, we need a four-day game, but against a strong team',” Shastri said. “And this request can be made. When both boards are fixing the itinerary [for a series], they can discuss this.

“This should be reciprocal – ‘When you come touring, we’ll give you a strong team for a four-day game. Be it a Board President’s XI, or whatever, we’ll give you a talented, young team. Similarly, when we tour and ask for a game, we should get good players for that game.’

“This board-to-board [conversation] can happen. After all, every board wants India to tour. Because they know that is where their sustenance lies. When India tours, they earn cash. So, at least give us a proper first-class game. Then we’ll tour,” the former India coach added.

Remaining in awe of Kohli’s fitness levels, separating him from the rest, Shastri said, considering he plays all three formats and can continue doing that for the next three to four years is a commendable thought.

"You have three formats of the game, and he's part of all those formats. To think that he still has three or four years of cricket ahead of him is simply mind-boggling." Shastri added. So if England remain in the bottom two, imagine a team like them not playing an ICC tournament as big as the CT would be a huge blow," added Shastri.

Thus, during the match, Shastri -- the former cricketer who is part of the commentary panel in Asia Cup 2023 -- criticised India as they dropped three easy catches at the beginning of the game and remained sloppy with overthrows and misfields.&nbsp;

It is about him ensuring that everyone in that batting lineup knows that they don't own batting positions."

"You've got to be flexible with your batting ladder. No matter who the name of the player is. You do not own positions. You got to have flexibility. That is paramount, and use the right guys against the right oppositions,” Shastri further asserted.

"The think tank would have thought about a group of 18 or 20 players at least four or five months before the World Cup and then given opportunities to each one of them, kept an eye on the injuries too, you know, whichever players who were part of the mix who got injuries and just come back, and then pick the right guys,” Shastri added.

India will look to end their ICC title drought since 2013 when they turn up for the 50-over showpiece event at home. Thus, Rohit has a litmus test to lead India to the mega title after a long time.

At present, Jasprit Bumrah is set to lead a second-stringed Indian team in Dublin, Ireland for a three-match T20I series which kicks off on Friday (August 18). It will mark Bumrah's international return since September 2022.
