"A lot of people have told me that (rising to the occasion at big tournaments). I will take that as a compliment. But for me each and every game is important. It`s important to focus on every point, and not the match," Sindhu told Badminton World Federation (BWF).

Talking about her pre-quarterfinal match on Thursday, Sindhu said: "I started off well. In the first game, I was rushing in defence a bit but my coach told me that I was playing the wrong way and I was able to change how I played. And then in the second game, I think it was fine, I maintained the lead and was under control."

Sindhu will now face either 12th seed South Korean Gaeun Kim or Japan's 4th seed Akane Yamaguchi in the last 8. On Wednesday, Sindhu defeated Hong Kong's Ngan Yi Cheung in straight sets 21-9, 21-16 to cruise into the elimination round of women's singles.

Happy Birthday, PV Sindhu: The ace shuttler

The countdown to the 2020 Olympics is underway with less than a month to go for the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Games. The organisers and the International Olympic Committee have unveiled a series of measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 during the two-week-long event and a severe breach of restrictions could even lead to expulsion. Many are calling these measures harsh but Indian medal hopeful and reigning Badminton World Champion PV Sindhu has backed the IOC's plans for keeping her and her fellow athletes safe. Sindhu was in conversation with WION Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo.

Exclusive: PV Sindhu looks ahead to Tokyo Olympics | World Champion backs COVID-19 countermeasures

PV Sindhu will be one of India’s biggest medal prospects in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics 2020 with the quadrennial event going underway on July 23, after a year of postponement. The Rio Olympics 2016 silver medallist will be eyeing the coveted gold medal after narrowly missing out on the top podium in the last Games.

Ahead of the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Indian badminton star PV Sindhu, in an exclusive interview with WION’s Sports Editor, Digvijay Singh Deo, talked about a range of things starting from the strict bio-bubble protocols in the Games, the new normal in the world’s biggest sporting event, mental toughness in the time of stringent regulations and much more.

Olympics is all about proving your mettle on a global stage. The fans are an integral part of the event but with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Games will feature far lesser crowds and no international spectators. Sindhu, who was the first Indian to win the Badminton World Championship, said that she will miss the normalcy when the Tokyo 2020 kickstarts in July.

“Definitely we will miss the normalcy. If you compare to the tournaments in the last 3-4 years, it will be very different. But one needs to understand because we are in a situation, this is not the right time to do everything and we have to make sure we are safe but also at the same time you can't expect it to be suffocating because we need to get used to the new normal,” Sindhu told WION in an exclusive interview.

“When I played a couple of tournaments in January and February, it was fine, I mean, we are getting used to it. Obviously, it is sad that we won't have many crowds around us. There won't be many cheering for us and we have to sort of go straight to the Village after the matches. These are the few things which are different but we have to get used to them. Just stay in the bio-bubble and stay safe. But yeah, we do miss the normalcy,” the first Indian woman to earn an Olympic silver medal added.

The Tokyo Olympics 2020 organisers have said that additional measures will be used to reduce infection risks from several countries, including India, that has seen a "significant impact from variants" of COVID-19.

But will it ensure that athletes are completely safe and fair?

“They (organisers) will make sure we will be safe and secure. It is not just about one country, there are so many athletes coming from across the globe. They have promised us if we follow the protocols, we will be safe and secure. The protocols are really strict. We will be tested every day beside the isolation protocols in Tokyo. It is for everyone's safety and to make sure everyone is inside the bio-bubble. After landing we will be tested and then they will take us to the Village and make sure we are there only. There are so many protocols but I am sure we will be safe and secure if everybody follows the guidelines,” Sindhu explained.

The protocols will involve daily testing of athletes for a week before they depart for Japan and for them to "refrain from coming into contact with other teams for three days after they arrive" in Japan. But at a time, when athletes train regularly to regain their peak, Indians will have to undergo a three-day quarantine upon landing in Japan, hence, missing their training regime.

"They (organisers) said if you are out of India then you don't have to do the three days quarantine. And if you are in India then you have to 7 days testing prior to reaching and then 3 days quarantine after landing. It is a tough task. It is not the right time to figure a way out, because we don't have enough time. Wherever we want to go, if we want to go somewhere so that we won't have a 3-day quarantine, there's no chance of going because if you go you have to quarantine for 14 days, 10 days, or seven days. That doesn't make sense at all. So the only thing you can do and hope is you make us a way there. Still, there are talks going but if there are so strict, then we will have to follow the rules. There are no second thoughts at the moment because it is too late," Sindhu further elaborated.

There have been complaints and grumbles around the bio-secure bubble fatigue from the cricket world. Players have said that they feel mentally tired during tours while many have pulled out from important series and tournaments.

Sindhu is of the view that players are slowly getting used to the bio-secure bubble protocols and the pros and cons it brings along. However, the ace Indian shuttler added that it will be a completely different experience this time as compared to the Rio Olympics.

“Definitely it is a new challenge. I have played the last three tournaments like that (in bio-bubble) and we are getting used to it. Before, we didn't know what to do and where to not to go. I am used to it now. Talking about the crowd, yes, we will miss it. Olympics are Olympics. When you compare it to Rio, it will be very different. At the same time, we have to get used to it, we have to take it like a practice session where there is no crowd. And that is how we have to keep ourselves mentally strong,” Sindhu said.

PV Sindhu to WION: No time to tweak routine to skip Tokyo Olympics' 3-day isolation rule

Spanish ace Carolina Marin withdrew from the upcoming Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday after suffering tears in her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and both meniscus on her left knee.

With Carolina's withdrawal, social media began analysing PV Sindhu's increased chances to win a gold medal for India in the much-awaited Summer Games.

Current World Champion PV Sindhu lost to Carolina Marin in the 2016 Rio Olympics and had to settle for a silver medal. However, Sindhu said that the competition will still be difficult despite Marin's absence.

“It is unfortunate she had to pull out due to injury, I really hope she has a speedy recovery,” Sindhu, 25, said from Hyderabad on Wednesday. “She has been a great competitor for me and we share a good equation.”

Sindhu said: “I can’t say the field becomes easy because the top 10 participants are all great at their game and I will still need to give it my best and focus on getting results one match at a time.”

In the head-to-head stat, Marin has a 9-5 career record against Sindhu. Recently, Marin defeated Sindhu in the Swiss Open final at Basel in March.

“In women’s singles, the top 10 are of the same standard, be it Tai Tzu Ying, Ratchanok (Intanon), Chen Yu Fei, (Nozomi) Okuhara, Carolina, (Akane) Yamaguchi, An Seyoung or Pornpawee (Chochuwong). I cannot take even one match easy as everybody is going to be at their 100 percent. Plus, everybody has their own set of skills,” world No.7 said.

“Now everybody will not know each other’s game because we haven’t played for two-and-a-half months. So, they’ll come and use their skill, tactics, everything. We’ll have to watch out for everyone and shouldn’t go with one strategy because everybody’s going to improve their game, learn new skills and techniques. We have to be ready and prepared for everything.”

World Tour Finals: PV Sindhu handed a tough draw, to face Tai and Intanon

Former world champion Ratchanok Intanon thrashed Indian superstar PV Sindhu on Friday in a swift 21-13, 21-9 game, halting her ascent into the semi-finals of badminton's Thailand Open.

The two players -- both beloved in their home countries -- were expected to have a well-matched showdown, with Sindhu having beaten the fourth-seeded Thai player in their last encounter in 2018.

But she was no match for Ratchanok's swift and graceful defence, which left one of the world's highest-paid athlete rudderless by the second set.

"If I had won the first game, I think things would have been comparatively different," said Sindhu, who admitted it just wasn't her day.

Her disappointing show on court comes after last week's surprise early exit in first of three consecutive events in Bangkok that culminate in next week's World Tour finals.

Ratchanok will face top-ranked Tai Tzu-ying in the semi-finals, who will be attempting a comeback after her loss in last week's tournament finals to Spain's Carolina Marin.

Marin continued her winning streak Friday, disposing of Turkey's Neslihan Yigit in a quick 21-6, 21-15 victory.

But she said she was impressed with the 32nd-ranked Yigit -- the sole Turkish player to make the quarter-finals at a Super 100 tournament.

"I hope that more European players will be playing badminton at this level," Marin said.

She will be facing off in the semi-finals against South Korean An Se-young, a formidable teenager who was awarded "Most Promising Player" in 2019.

They already duelled in last week's tournament, with the more experienced Marin winning 21-18, 21-16.

The 18-year-old, ranked ninth in the world, said she would need to up her mental game in preparation for their showing on Saturday.

"If I want to win against Marin, I need to focus more than last time and have more confidence," An said, after she disposed of Thai player Pornpawee Chochuwong in a 21-15, 21-18 match full of smashes and attacks.

Meanwhile India's Sameer Verma put up a strong fight earlier in the day against third-ranked Anders Antonsen, whose return to the court comes after he suffered a twisted ankle in March.

The three-set thriller had both players dive-bombing for the shuttlecock before Antonsen eked out a 21-13, 19-21, 22-20 win.

"Sameer is a warrior. He fought really hard," said the third seed Dane, who admitted that Verma, ranked 31st in the world, came "very close" to beating him.

The athletes have been facing off under tight biosecurity because of the coronavirus pandemic, and without spectators, although the tournaments have been blighted by four positive coronavirus cases.

Former top-ranked Ratchanok thrashes Indian superstar PV Sindhu

India's PV Sindhu cruised into the second round of the Thailand Open on Tuesday to erase the memory of her surprise first round exit a week earlier

The Rio Olympics silver medallist, was sheer class as she pummelled Thailand's world number 12 Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-17, 21-13 in 42 minutes in Bangkok.

"It was a good game and I'm very, very happy. This win was very important for me in this tournament because at last week's tournament, I went out in the first round," said sixth seed Sindhu.

"So this win today was important, because even though in the first game it was tight, I didn't want to make it easy."

Sindhu fell to Denmark's Mia Blichfeldt in a shock a week ago in the first of back-to-back Thailand Opens.

Top seed Tai Tzu-ying from Taiwan bounced back from her final defeat to Spain's Carolina Marin in the first tournament on Sunday, to beat Thailand's Supanida Katethong 21-16, 21-11.

"I think I played OK today. I am feeling a little better than last week," said Tai.

In the men's singles, former world number one Kidambi Srikanth polished off Thailand's Sitthikom Thammasin 21-11, 21-11.

The Indian, now ranked 14th, was forced to pull out of last week's tournament with a calf muscle strain.

Thailand is hosting three consecutive badminton tournaments in Bangkok culminating in the World Tour Finals from January 27.

The players have been facing off in a bio-secure bubble minus spectators, although the first tournament was overshadowed by three positive coronavirus cases.

Olympic medallist Sindhu cruises into second round in Thailand

India’s PV Sindhu has been knocked out of the Thailand Open 2021 after losing her opening match against Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt 21-16, 24-26, 13-21 on Tuesday.

Sindhu failed to convert two match points as she loses to Mia Blichfeldt in the opening round of the Thailand Open in what was a disastrous start for the Olympic gold-medalist.

Furthermore, B Sai Praneeth was also knocked out from Thailand Open after going down to Kantaphon Wangcharoen 16-21, 10-21.

Thailand Open: PV Sindhu, Sai Praneeth knocked out in 1st round

Indian badminton star PV Sindhu is set to return to the court in January 2021 with three events scheduled to be held in Thailand. Sindhu, the 2019 World Champion and 2016 Olympic silver medalist, participated in her last competitive match at 2020 All England Open in March but has since been restricted from playing due to COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Sindhu is set to return to the badminton court and will participate in three tournaments in Thailand next month. The Yonex Thailand Open from January 12-17 will be Sindhu’s first tournament followed by the Toyota Thailand Open from January 19-24. She will wrap up the month with the World Tour Finals in Bangkok, subject to qualification, from January 27-31.

The Indian government has given a green signal to her request to have her physio and fitness trainer to accompany her in the three tournaments.

The services of her physio and trainer for these three tournaments has been sanctioned at an approximate cost of Rs. 8.25 lakhs, TOPS said in a statement.

Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) is a marquee program of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in a bid to provide assistance to India’s elite athletes.

Sindhu has already sealed qualification for the Tokyo Olympics, which will go ahead at a rescheduled date in the summer of 2021. In October, Sindhu flew to London to work on nutrition and body analysis and is sweating hard to be at her optimum best when the Tokyo Olympics start.

"It (world champion tag) is an added advantage as well. But I have to make sure... the responsibilities are going to be a lot. Compared to 2016, it's going to be very different, people's expectations are a lot more. I understand that. I go with a mindset that I have to give my best and give my 100 percent. That's how I am going to approach it. I am confident that I will do well," PV Sindhu had told India Today last month.
