Manchester City's bid to chop Arsenal's Premier League lead to two points was scuppered as Harry Kane's record-breaking goal earned Tottenham Hotspur a 1-0 win over the champions on Sunday. Kane's 15th-minute effort punished some sloppy City passing and made him the north London club's all-time top goal-scorer with 267, taking him past former great Jimmy Greaves whose record had stood since 1970. It was a strike even the fans of Tottenham's arch-rivals Arsenal would have celebrated down the Seven Sisters Road as it helped Mikel Arteta's side stay five points clear of champions City despite Saturday's shock loss at Everton.

Tottenham had led by two goals at halftime at City a few weeks ago only to capitulate and lose 4-2 but this time they held firm despite a late red card for Cristian Romero to boost their own hopes of finishing in the top four.

With Erling Haaland subdued, the closest City came to scoring was a Riyad Mahrez effort that smashed against the underside of the crossbar in first-half stoppage time. Tottenham then withstood a late City siege with some tenacious defending to clinch a third win in four league games over Pep Guardiola's side.

City remain in second place with 45 points from 21 games with Arsenal on 50 having played a game less with the two sides meeting in north London on Feb. 15. Tottenham, whose manager Antonio Conte was absent after having surgery to remove his gallbladder, are fifth on 39 points from 22 games, one behind Newcastle United.

Kane's moment arrived when City made a mess of trying to play out from the back and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg stole the ball off Rico Lewis on the edge of the area before holding off a challenge and flicking the ball to Kane. The England striker's right-foot shot was not his sweetest connection but it found its way into the corner past Ederson as Kane became only the third player to score 200 Premier League goals.

After the final whistle Kane was interviewed on the pitch as fans serenaded him with "Harry you're one of own.." -- a reference to the fact he joined the club as an 11-year-old.

"It's quite surreal, a magical feeling to do it in front of the home fans and to win the game, I wanted to do it at this special place and in front of these amazing fans."

City sent on Kevin De Bruyne for Mahrez on the hour and the Belgian fired a shot wide while Julian Alvarez had a ferocious effort deflected over the crossbar.

Romero was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Jack Grealish but City could find no way through as they missed a huge opportunity to put pressure on Arsenal and they find themselves only three points above in-form Manchester United.

"Sooner or later it is going to change, but it is strange we haven't scored one goal," Guardiola said of City's troubles with Tottenham. "To find an explanation is not easy.

Arsenal suffered a reality check in their pursuit of the Premier League title on Saturday, losing 1-0 at struggling Everton in manager Sean Dyche's first game in charge, while Liverpool imploded in their third consecutive away defeat. James Tarkowski's second-half header sealed Everton's first victory since October, briefly moving them out of the relegation zone - although they ended the day back in it.

While there was joy on the blue side of Merseyside, Liverpool's miserable league campaign continued as they were crushed 3-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Liverpool trailed 2-0 after only 12 minutes with Joel Matip's own goal and a debut effort for Craig Dawson. Ruben Neves added a third for the hosts after the break.

"When you start like this you don't deserve anything in a Premier League game," Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said. "We have to change it immediately in the next game."

Meanwhile, Manchester United consolidated their top-four position with a 2-1 victory at home to Crystal Palace, although it came at a cost with midfielder Casemiro shown a straight red card. United edged above Newcastle United into third place with 42 points and Newcastle failed to reclaim the position later as they could only draw at home to West Ham United.

Arsenal gets a wake-up call

Arsenal's second league loss of the season left them on 50 points, five ahead of champions Manchester City who are at fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. With no signings in the January window and Everton in a horrendous run of form, the omens were not good for Dyche as he began his rescue mission at Goodison Park against an Arsenal side whose only previous league defeat came in September.

But Everton took full advantage of a rare Arsenal off-day with Dwight McNeil's corner being powered home by Tarkowski -- two players who had worked under Dyche at Burnley.

"I've just said to them that it's a start point, that's all it is. We're laying down the fibre of what we want to be as a group but this is only a start point, no matter who you beat," Dyche said of Everton's first win in 11 in all competitions.

For Arsenal it was a wake-up call and they will be hoping for a favour from Tottenham, who play second-placed Manchester City on Sunday.

"From our side, we're disappointed because obviously we didn't get the result that we wanted, but the performance doesn't reflect what we've been doing," the Spaniard said.

Manchester United cruise ahead but Casemiro shown red card

Everything was going smoothly for Manchester United after Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty and then Marcus Rashford scored his 11th goal since the World Cup to make it 2-0 at Old Trafford. But Casemiro was dismissed in the 70th minute for grabbing Will Hughes around the neck during a melee caused by a foul on Anthony. Palace made it a nervy ending when Jeffrey Schlupp halved the deficit.

United saw out a 13th consecutive win at Old Trafford but they will now be without Casemiro for three games.

"I've seen the incident, where the Crystal Palace player takes a big risk to bring an injury to Antony and then the emotions got really high, for several players," Erik ten Hag said. "They (VAR) pick one player out."

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag toed a safe line, a day after rape and assault charges were dropped against academy graduate Mason Greenwood. The Dutch manager refused to comment on the issue and directed reporters toward the club's statement.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag toed a safe line, a day after rape and assault charges were dropped against academy graduate Mason Greenwood. The Dutch manager refused to comment on the issue and directed reporters toward the club's statement. "I can't add anything. I refer to the statement of the club," said the Dutch manager, in his first season at Old Trafford. "In this moment, I can't give comment about the process. I can't say anything about it, I refer to the statement of the club and at this moment I can't add anything." United released a statement after the news and took a circumspect view of things. "Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped. The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete." Greenwood being freed of the charges does not mean that the assault or rape did not take place. The Crown Prosecution informed on Thursday that the key witnesses had withdrawn from the case which made the prosecution difficult. "Given the significant media coverage of this case, it is only fair that we share the news that the 21-year-old man, who had been arrested and charged in connection with an investigation opened in January 2022, no longer faces criminal proceedings in relation to this," said Michaela Kerr, Greater Manchester Police's head of Public Protection. Enzo emerged on the global scene after his breakthrough performance during Argentina’s World Cup-winning campaign in Qatar where he not only broke into the starting XI in every game, he also won the Young Player award. Premier League breaks all records with humongous spending in the winter transfer window

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has responded to the criticism hurled his way after his side's poor form in the ongoing season. Klopp said he did not become a bad manager 'overnight' after his team was on the cusp of a historic quadruple last season.

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has responded to the criticism hurled his way after his side's poor form in the ongoing season. Klopp said he did not become a bad manager 'overnight' after his team was on the cusp of a historic quadruple last season. "So I didn't become a bad manager overnight. I was never as good as people probably said. I'm not as bad as some people might think. But imagine this, you would talk today to another coach. So I go, we win all four trophies and I say, ‘see you all later’. Imagine that you see a different face,” Klopp told the reporters ahead of Liverpool's fourth-round FA Cup match against Brighton. The German added that to manage a club the size and scale of Liverpool, one needed to have a strong personality to handle the criticism coming your way. “Last year was great, and this year is not great. So go. So these kind of things, you need wide shoulders and really take it. It's tough. I'm sorry, but we will go for it with all we have." Read more: 'I have enough energy...': Jurgen Klopp on his Liverpool managerial future When asked about the legacy he would be leaving at the club, Klopp said he did not care much about such things. “Who cares about that now? I couldn’t care less. I don’t think for a second that we won the Champions League. In years (to come) I will think about it." Despite the criticism, Klopp, in his seven years at the club has won every trophy there was to win, including the Champions League. Thus, Klopp's target this season will be to finish in the top four or otherwise the team will have to overcome the Real Madrid obstacle in the Champions League next month and hope to go all the way to Istanbul and win the trophy. 'I didn't become a bad manager...': Klopp on Liverpool's shoddy form this season

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford was not pleased after Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ruled out his goal against Championship side Reading in the fifth-round match of the FA Cup.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford was not pleased after Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ruled out his goal against Championship side Reading in the fifth-round match of the FA Cup. The England player took to Twitter to vent his frustration. Rashford said he wanted to break the record of scoring in the most number of matches consecutively at home i.e Old Trafford. "Unfortunately, VAR got the better of me again today. That's 3 times this season. Breaking the record for consecutive goals at OT would have been incredible, but I'm proud to have equalled Dennis Viollets record #MUFC," tweeted Rashford. Unfortunately, VAR got the better of me again today. That's 3 times this season 😡 Breaking the record for consecutive goals at OT would have been incredible, but I'm proud to have equalled Dennis Viollets record ❤️ #MUFC — Marcus Rashford (@MarcusRashford) January 28, 2023 × Rashford came into the contest, scoring 10 goals in 10 games after the World Cup break. He was attempting to get ahead of Viollets record of scoring in nine consecutive home games, established way back in 1959. The no. 10 came close to the record when he headed one at the back post after Wout Weghorst stooped the ball toward him. The goal was initially given but the VAR intervened and deemed Weghorst to be offside in the build-up to the goal. Read more: 'I'm not Harry Potter': Erik ten Hag on Marcus Rashford's turnaround in form Despite the goal being chalked off, United managed to reach the next round of the world's oldest football tournament, courtesy of a brace from Casemiro and a cheeky backheel flick from Fred. The Red Devils were the dominant side from the beginning, enjoying the lion's share of possession. However, the first half went without any goal as Reading's defensive line remained intact and did its job astutely. However, the tide turned in the second half when Casemiro scored twice in under four minutes to take his season's tally to five goals. The finishing touches were applied by Fred who managed to turn the ball to the back of the net, despite having his back to the goal and standing near the byline at an acute angle. With the win, United, continue to remain in the hunt for trophies in all the competitions. Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has attributed his premier winger Mo Salah's struggles this season to the absence of the old, 'well drilled' front three that had grown accustomed to playing together.

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has attributed his premier winger Mo Salah's struggles this season to the absence of the old, 'well drilled' front three that had grown accustomed to playing together. "Of course Mo is suffering. It was a well-drilled machine the front three, everything was clear (in) what we were doing. Everybody suffers from that, that's clear," Klopp told the reporters. “It is specific, offensive play that requires a lot of work and lot of information, and not always obvious information. You create a feeling about a lot of these things, about where your teammate is and where to pass the ball without looking.” Salah has scored 17 goals in all competitions so far but his tally of seven goals in the Premier League has hurt the team's fortunes. Though, 17 goals at the halfway stage of the season may be considered good returns for any other player, the standards set by Salah mean that critics believe he is having an off-season. Salah has won the Golden Boot three times during his stay at the Merseyside. However, it looks highly unlikely he will be getting anywhere near Haaland who has already crossed last year's goal tally (23) to win the award. With Nunez and Gakpo still new in the setup, the front three of Liverpool has not been firing. The team has already crashed out of the Carabao Cup and will be squaring up against red-hot Brighton in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday. However, asked if he had the motivation left to carry out the demanding managerial job, Klopp said he could go on for another ten years. "My motivation is no problem. Brighton player releases statement begging to be sold amid Arsenal, Chelsea interest

After taking part in his 1000th match in a managerial capacity, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said he has enough in the tank to go on for another 10 years. "My motivation is no problem.

After taking part in his 1000th match in a managerial capacity, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said he has enough in the tank to go on for another 10 years. "My motivation is no problem. I am a bit like Obelix, who fell in the…you know Asterix and Obelix? Ah, you don’t know it, forget it...I have enough energy for another 10 years if you want!” The Liverpool gaffer was speaking after his side played an attritional 0-0 draw against Chelsea. The team has looked a pale shadow of its former self that was on the cusp of completing a quadruple last year. As a result, questions regarding Klopp's position as Liverpool's manager have started to come up. The German has often been quizzed for his excess loyalty to the players. He addressed the issue recently and said: “I am loyal, I think everyone should be loyal, but I am not too loyal. The problem is too complex. You have a good player who did a lot of good stuff in the past and then maybe, in your mind, you think: ‘That’s it for him now.'” Some football pundits believe that Liverpool may have stagnated after being a leading team in the continent, primarily due to Klopp's passiveness coupled with FSG's lack of investment. 'I have enough energy...': Jurgen Klopp on his Liverpool managerial future

Premier League leaders Arsenal have had their title credentials questioned all season but their last-gasp win against Manchester United has silenced many of the remaining doubters.

Eddie Nketiah scored the winner in the dying moments of a pulsating match at the Emirates on Sunday as the home fans were infused with fresh belief that this could be their year.

The game against in-form United was seen as a critical test for the Gunners, especially after Manchester City closed the gap at the top of the table to just two points earlier in the day.

It was a challenge they did not fluff, hitting back hard after conceding the first goal, scored by Marcus Rashford, and staying calm after Lisandro Martinez cancelled out Bukayo Saka's strike in the second half.

Arsenal, who have made their best-ever start to an English top-flight season, now have 50 points after 19 games, five clear of defending champions City with a game in hand at the halfway point of the campaign.

"I don't think it gets much better than that," said a buoyant Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta.

"It was a beautiful moment, a really special one because we were pushing and pushing and pushing and the goal wasn't coming and it came at the end... it was just electric. It was really emotional, really passionate and I lost it."

Arteta said he hopes the result, which follows last week's 2-0 win against Tottenham in the north London derby, gives his team the belief that Arsenal can be crowned league champions for the first time since 2004.

But he wants to keep his team's feet on the ground despite a remarkable season in which they have lost just once in the league.

"We know our reality, we know how much we still have to improve," said the Spaniard, who was previously Pep Guardiola's assistant at City.

Winnable matches

Arsenal face the defending champions in the middle of next month but their upcoming fixtures all look winnable and it is getting increasingly difficult to see where they will slip up.

Leaving the match against City aside, Arsenal's next opponents in the league are relegation-threatened Everton, Brentford, Aston Villa, Leicester, Bournemouth, Fulham, Crystal Palace and Leeds.

City, with title-winning pedigree, appear to have found their form again after a wobble and the sides at the bottom of the table will fight for their lives as the trap door looms.

But former Arsenal captain Arteta has transformed his side into title favourites, through luck and judgement.

Saka has gone from strength to strength while Nketiah has stepped up in the absence of new signing Gabriel Jesus, injured while playing for Brazil at the World Cup.

The 23-year-old now has six goals in six games in all competitions since the tournament in Qatar.

"What Eddie's doing is incredible," said Arteta. "We cannot say we saw that. We were hoping that he could do that because of the way he is, because of his mentality, because of his qualities."

When asked to sum up the first half of the season, Arteta said it was "extraordinary" but was again careful to avoid the impression that his team are the finished article.

"It doesn't get much better than that, that's the reality," he said. "I think we deserve the points that we have."

"We have played well enough to win most of the matches but the reality as well is that we still have a lot of things that we can get much better at."

So does he believe Arsenal are now favourites for the title, on course to win the Premier League for the first time since Arsene Wenger's last triumph nearly two decades ago?

"I don't have an opinion," he said. "It can be a perception. I know my team so well, I know where we are, I know why we are here and I know where we want to be."

Premier League: Arsenal edge past Manchester United in a five-goal thriller

Everton have sacked manager Frank Lampard, British media reported on Monday, after a poor run of form that has left the Premier League club in a relegation battle. Lampard's last game in charge was Saturday's 2-0 defeat at fellow strugglers West Ham United, which kept them second-bottom on 15 points after 20 games, two points below the safety zone. The Merseyside team had been floundering under the former England international, having last won a league game in October when they beat Crystal Palace 3-0 at home.

Lampard was appointed by Everton in January 2022 after he managed Chelsea from 2019-2021 and Derby County in the second tier in 2018-19. The 44-year-old was sacked as Chelsea manager in January 2021, having returned to the west London club where he holds the goal-scoring record. He took over at Everton after the Merseyside club parted ways with Rafa Benitez, continuing the managerial revolving door at a club struggling to revive former glories.

Lampard's immediate task was to save Everton from relegation with the club only four points above the drop zone -- a task he eventually managed on the penultimate game of the season as his side hit back from 2-0 down to beat Palace.

Having sold Brazil striker Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspur, this season began with back-to-back defeats before Everton went on a six-game unbeaten run which fueled optimism. Since beating Southampton on October 1, however, Everton have fallen away badly with Lampard's squad looking woefully short of attacking options.

A draw at Manchester City on New Year's Eve earned praise for Lampard and his team but any hope that might signal a climb up the table was shattered by three consecutive league losses.

PL: Everton sack manager Frank Lampard following dismal show in this season

Arsenal is having a dream run in the ongoing season of the English Premier League. Against their age-old rivals Manchester United in a home fixture on Sunday night, the Gunners didn’t leave a stone unturned in their effort to claim an important win and take a five-point lead over Manchester City on the points table. Following the win, former Arsenal star mid-fielder Cesc Fabregas lauded manager Mikel Arteta for trusting the process and for believing in the young group of players at helm. Fabregas, who didn’t win a Premier League title with Arsenal, feels if they are going to produce similar performances in matches to come, Arsenal could actually have the final hurray.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Cesc said, “He's done a fantastic job. We saw in the [Amazon] documentary the way he pushes players, the way he understands players.”

On Sunday, Manchester United opened the scoring through Marcus Rashford in the 17th minute. Hosts Arsenal took just seven minutes to equalise. Bukayo Saka then made it 2-1 in the 53rd minute while United’s defender Lisandro Martinez made it 2-2 soon after. Just when it looked like the match could end in a draw, Nketiah cheekily hit one in during the 90th minute to give Arsenal the lead they wanted. As the match ended with Arsenal winning the clash, the crowd went berserk.

Heaping praises on Arteta for bringing the change in the dressing room and making everyone believe that they can again taste glory after almost 20 years, Fabregas said,

"I was lucky enough to be at the training ground recently and it felt like I had never been there before because everything had changed so much. The manager of the training ground told me that 95 per cent of the changes were Mikel's. He's changed the perception of the club, a lot of positive messages around the training ground, much bigger facilities, better equipment, the pitches are better. Everything, you name it,” Fabregas added.

Under Arteta, Arsenal finished eighth on two straight occasions and even missed out on qualifying for the UCL as well. Commentating on the same, Cesc said the turn-around for Arsenal this season is commendable, and that he would suggest other clubs to also follow the same path and not get panic and sack managers just because the results are going in their favour at the moment.

“Remember, they finished eighth for two consecutive seasons. To do what they're doing in a short space of time and doing it in the manner they're doing is quite inspiring. Arsenal gave time to Mikel and this proves and shows to other clubs to not panic when things go wrong,” said Fabregas.

Meanwhile, Arsenal will face Everton in their next Premier League match on Saturday, February 4th.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte was a cross man after his side surrendered a two-goal advantage on Thursday night to lose 4-2 to Manchester City. Conte said his players were defending like a 'relegation team' as they had let in a plethora of goals in the last 10 matches. "Compare to last season, we are doing less and to concede 21 goals in the last 10 (league) games, this is usually a team that fights for a relegation zone." Conte was aiming to become the first coach to inflict three consecutive league defeats upon Pep Guardiola. He had the best of starts when Dejan Kulusevski and Emerson Royal scored in quick succession at the end of the first half to give the North London club an advantage. However, after the break, the defending champions came out of the blocks in blistering fashion and scored two goals in the opening two minutes - gaining control of the match. Riyad Mahrez scored a brace in the last half-hour and effectively sealed the win as Tottenham looked toothless in defence. "Progress doesn't depend on the final result. The progress you see if you start to see the players play with the personality, to start the game with the will and desire to have the ball. "We have to improve the spirit, the collaboration, the desire. Maybe we have forgotten to suffer and to understand that if we want to win then maybe you have to suffer like last season." "I dream, I want to play Champions League. There are 18 games in the Premier League. We need to dream of something important, but at the same time to be realistic." Antonio Conte blasts Tottenham for defending like a 'relegation' team

Playing at the Etihad Stadium, manager Pep Guardiola would have hoped to have the support of his fans. However, after his team conceded twice at the end of the first half, the fans at the stadium seemingly lost it and started booing the players.

Asked after the match what he thought of the 'booing' Guardiola criticised the fans and said they had grown too accustomed to winning.

"Our fans were silent for 45 minutes - I want my fans back. I want my fans that are here - not my away fans, they are the best - but my fans here to support every corner and every action, because Tottenham are one of the toughest opponents I've ever faced,"

"They booed because we were losing but in the second half we played good, we had more chances. Maybe it's the same with our team, maybe we are so comfortable with winning four Premier Leagues in five years."

Dejan Kulusevski and Emerson Royal scored in quick succession in the first half to put the 'Cityzens' in a foul mood. However, Guardiola's men were a transformed side in the second half as they found the back of the net four times and managed to overturn the tie in their favour.

"Our fans were silent for 45 minutes - I want my fans back. I want my fans that are here - not my away fans, they are the best - but my fans here to support every corner and every action, because Tottenham are one of the toughest opponents I've ever faced," "They booed because we were losing but in the second half we played good, we had more chances. Maybe it's the same with our team, maybe we are so comfortable with winning four Premier Leagues in five years." Dejan Kulusevski and Emerson Royal scored in quick succession in the first half to put the 'Cityzens' in a foul mood. However, Guardiola's men were a transformed side in the second half as they found the back of the net four times and managed to overturn the tie in their favour. Manchester City fans slammed for booing their players against Tottenham Hotspur

Graham Potter pleaded with his Chelsea players to "stay together" after a shock 2-1 defeat at Fulham that saw Blues forward Joao Felix sent off on his debut before a decisive blunder from Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Potter's troubled side crashed to a seventh defeat in their last 10 games in all competitions after another spluttering display.

Chelsea fell behind to a goal from their former winger Willian in the first half at Craven Cottage on Thursday.

Kalidou Koulibaly equalised after the break but Felix was dismissed for a reckless studs-up lunge on Kenny Tete.

Fulham were gifted their late winner by Chelsea keeper Kepa, who made a hash of dealing with a cross that Carlos Vinicius converted to leave Potter facing renewed talk of the sack just four months after he replaced the axed Thomas Tuchel.

"We made a couple of mistakes for their first goal, then the red card changes the game. Disappointed with the second goal because I think we could do better and that is what cost us," said Potter after the match.

Potter this week labelled managing Chelsea as "the hardest job in football" after a turbulent period that is severely testing owner Todd Boehly's faith in the former Brighton boss.

Chelsea are languishing in 10th place, 10 points adrift of the top four after their wretched run extended to one win in their last nine league games.

They have managed just four goals in their last eight games in all competitions and Potter desperately needs a victory against Crystal Palace on Sunday to buy himself at least a little breathing space before squaring up against Liverpool next Saturday.

"We have got to keep working. There is no other solution. You have to keep working, stay together and try to get the three points," Potter said.

Hampered by a debilitating injury list, Potter held a meeting with senior players Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic on Tuesday in an attempt to calm the crisis.

But Chelsea fans' patience is already wearing thin and losing to sixth-placed neighbours Fulham was another bitter blow to his hopes of avoiding the sack.

'Another blow'

It was in keeping with Potter's misfortune that Felix's promising debut ended prematurely after his loan move from Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

"It was a forwards tackle. There was no malice in it but I understand why it was a red. It is another blow. The hits keep coming at the moment," Potter said.

The 23-year-old Felix, who cost Chelsea a reported $12 million loan fee, was one of four changes from the 4-0 FA Cup defeat at Manchester City last weekend.

Given license to roam across Chelsea's three-man attack, Felix's pass found Kai Havertz and when the German's shot was blocked, he laid the rebound to Lewis Hall, whose low drive was saved by Bernd Leno.

Picked out by Mateo Kovacic, Felix fired wide from the edge of the area, then volleyed over after Azpilicueta's cross found him unmarked 10 yards from goal.

But Potter was left to rue dreadful defending when Fulham took the lead in the 25th minute.

Hall surrendered possession and Chalobah failed to clear properly before Willian unleashed a powerful drive that took a deflection off Trevoh Chalobah as it flashed past the wrong-footed Kepa.

Potter was ashen-faced on the bench as Fulham fans taunted him by singing "Stamford Bridge is falling down" and "you're getting sacked in the morning".

Chelsea were level two minutes after half-time as Mason Mount's free-kick hit the post and rebounded to Koulibaly, who stabbed just over the line before Leno could save.

But even then, Potter's luck wouldn't last as Felix saw red after needlessly throwing himself into a high tackle that crashed into Tete's shin.

There was an even more ignominious contribution to Chelsea's downfall from Kepa in the 73rd minute.

Kepa completely misjudged the flight of Andreas Pereira's cross, allowing it to sail over his head to Vinicius, who nodded into the empty net while Chelsea defender Thiago Silva screamed at the hapless keeper.

Chelsea flounder at Craven Cottage as Felix receives a red card on Premier League debut

Eddie Nketiah scored twice as Arsenal set up an FA Cup fourth-round clash away to Manchester City after seeing off third-tier Oxford United 3-0 on Monday.

Mohamed Elneny's header opened the floodgates at the Kassam Stadium after the Premier League leaders failed to make the breakthrough for over an hour.

Nketiah then sealed the win by taking his tally to four goals in as many games since the World Cup break.

"We had to up the level as it wasn't good enough from us in the first half and I think we did that in the second," said Nketiah. "It's not the best draw but we're up for it."

Mikel Arteta named a strong side featuring his preferred front three in the absence of the injured Gabriel Jesus as Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli flanked Nketiah in the attack.

Arsenal were dominant in possession before the break but struggled to create any clear-cut chances and were further frustrated by the decision not to award a penalty for handball when Elliott Moore blocked Albert Sambi Lokonga's effort.

Fabio Vieira was one of those not commonly in Arteta's starting line-up given a chance to shine and the Portuguese made his mark after the break with two assists.

FA Cup: Arsenal brush aside Oxford City to set up a mouth-watering fourth round clash with Manchester City

Manchester United heaped the pressure on Everton boss Frank Lampard on Friday, overcoming a howler from goalkeeper David de Gea to win the FA Cup third-round tie 3-1.

Manchester United heaped the pressure on Everton boss Frank Lampard on Friday, overcoming a howler from goalkeeper David de Gea to win the FA Cup third-round tie 3-1. Everton travelled to Old Trafford in trepidation after slipping into the Premier League relegation zone this week following a chastening 4-1 home hammering at the hands of Brighton. But they made the worst possible start, with Brazil forward Antony scoring in just the fourth minute. They were level 10 minutes later after Conor Coady pounced on De Gea's embarrassing error but the Everton defender put the ball in his own net early in the second half to hand the initiative back to the home side. Marcus Rashford increased Manchester United's lead in the dying seconds, scoring from the penalty spot. United won the most recent of their 12 FA Cups in 2016 while Everton's win against United in the 1995 Wembley final was the last time they won a trophy. The Red Devils, hunting their first silverware since 2017 - are in fourth spot in the Premier League in Erik ten Hag's first season in charge and are through to the League Cup quarter-finals. The in-form team opened the scoring when the impressive Rashford surged down the left and into the penalty area before firing the ball across the box to the fast-arriving Antony. Moments later Anthony Martial flashed just wide and Everton appeared to be facing an arduous night. WATCH | Gravitas: The death of possession football? × De Gea error But Demarai Gray gave United a warning when he smashed a shot against the foot of the post from just outside the area and minutes later Everton were level in bizarre circumstances. Amadou Onana won the ball on the edge of the box and fed Neal Maupay, who steered the ball towards the near post. De Gea could have used his hands but the ball somehow squeezed through his legs as he clung to the post with one hand and Coady had the easiest of finishes. The mood of the match changed but United still looked dangerous on their forays forward, with Jordan Pickford denying Martial after a lightning counter-attack. Ten Hag urged the United fans to turn up the volume as he came out after half-time and they were quickly back in front, with Rashford once again playing a crucial role. United continued to probe for openings as fans taunted Lampard with chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning", with Bruno Fernandes testing Everton goalkeeper Pickford from distance. Everton, showing an admirable fighting spirit, had the ball in the net through substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin but the goal was ruled out for an offside by VAR earlier in the move. Rashford added gloss to the scoreline from the spot after Alejandro Garnacho was brought down. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Liverpool suffered a huge blow in their quest for a top four finish as their star defender Virgil Van Dijk suffered a hamstring injury during the match against Brentford, coach Jurgen Klopp revealed. During Liverpool’s 1-3 defeat to Brentford in an away clash, Van Dijk was substituted at the halftime as part of the triple change by Klopp. As per the coach, Van Dijk is likely to spend more than four weeks on sideline – something he considers as a massive blow going forward.

Speaking to the media ahead of his side’s third-round match at home against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, Klopp said,

“Virgil was a surprise for us and a big blow. He didn't feel a lot. The diagnosis was pretty harsh. We're talking about weeks, more than a month, but I hope it goes quick. It's hard for him, but he has played an incredible amount of games in recent years.”

'I am excited to play my part...' - Goalkeeper Jack Butland on his loan move to Manchester United

Defending champions Manchester City beat injury-hit Chelsea 1-0 on Thursday to close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal to just five points.

Pep Guardiola's men were well below par in the first half but were transformed after the break, with substitutes Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahrez combining for the only goal, scored by the Algerian in the 63rd minute.

Graham Potter's Chelsea came into the game languishing in 10th place in the table and were expected to face a searching examination from second-placed City.

Chelsea, however, were up against it from the opening minutes, with forward Raheem Sterling forced off after suffering an apparent hamstring injury, replaced by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Potter was also without a string of senior players including Mason Mount, Reece James, Ben Chilwell and N'Golo Kante.

The game at Stamford Bridge was scrappy in the initial stages, with the visitors dominating possession but creating little of note.

Chelsea were first to threaten, in the 16th minute, but City defender John Stones came to the rescue as Christian Pulisic bore down on goal, producing a perfectly timed sliding tackle to deny the US forward.

The American was injured in the challenge and was forced off minutes later, compounding Chelsea's problems.

Teenager Carney Chukwuemeka, who came on for Pulisic, almost made an instant impact, but his shot was blocked and Hakim Ziyech's effort was saved by City goalkeeper Ederson.

Erling Haaland, who has one more Premier League goal this season (21) than the entire Chelsea side, smashed a shot wide in the 38th minute.

But Chelsea continued to look the more dangerous side and came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock when Chukwuemeka hit the post in the 44th minute.

Guardiola made a double substitution at half-time, bringing on Rico Lewis and Manuel Akanji for Joao Cancelo and Kyle Walker in search of more control.

The visitors immediately settled and began to dictate play, with Nathan Ake heading against the woodwork, but Chelsea responded well and were inches away from taking the lead when Thiago Silva flashed wide.

Guardiola brought on Grealish and Mahrez on the hour mark to further freshen up his attack.

The decision paid dividends minutes later when Grealish produced an excellent pass from the left and Mahrez prodded home from close range.

Potter made changes of his own, including bringing on England forward Conor Gallagher, but they were unable to find an equaliser despite some late pressure.

The result leaves City five points behind Arsenal, who dropped points in a 0-0 draw against high-flying Newcastle earlier in the week.

Chelsea now have just one win in their past eight league games and remain 10 points off the top four.

WATCH | Gravitas: The death of possession football? × The game at Stamford Bridge was scrappy in the initial stages, with the visitors dominating possession but creating little of note. Harry Kane lifted the gloom at Tottenham on Wednesday, scoring twice in a convincing 4-0 win against Crystal Palace as Nottingham Forest hauled themselves out of the relegation zone.

Harry Kane lifted the gloom at Tottenham on Wednesday, scoring twice in a convincing 4-0 win against Crystal Palace as Nottingham Forest hauled themselves out of the relegation zone. Forest beat bottom side Southampton 1-0 while troubled Wolves drew 1-1 at Aston Villa and struggling West Ham shared the points with Leeds in a 2-2 draw. Antonio Conte's inconsistent Tottenham, who finished fourth last season, had taken just one point from two matches after the Premier League resumed following the World Cup. The disaffected Italian manager, used to success at Inter Milan, Chelsea and Juventus, warned this week he would only stick around if he was 100 per cent convinced by the club's project. Conte was looking for a reaction after Sunday's 2-0 defeat at home against Aston Villa and he eventually got it despite an insipid first-half performance from his team. WATCH | Gravitas: The death of possession football? × "The character of this team always shows," he told Sky Sports. "Maybe only in the last game against Aston Villa we didn't have a strong reaction. Otherwise every game we show strong character." "It is really important. We got three points. We continue to stay very close for the good positions. After you don't win and the confidence is down, it was important to win." Spurs were second best in the first half at Selhurst Park, lacking zip in attack, and had goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to thank for keeping the score at 0-0 but it was a different story after the break. England captain Kane scored twice in five minutes in his 300th Premier League appearance to move just two goals behind Jimmy Greaves' all-time record of 266 goals for Spurs. Tottenham broke the deadlock in the 48th minute when Ivan Perisic crossed to Kane from the left and he neatly nodded past Vicente Guaita at the near post. Kane doubled Spurs' lead when the ball fell to Bryan Gil on the right and he flicked a pass to the England forward, who sent a low strike unerringly into the bottom left corner. Matt Doherty made it 3-0 midway through the second half and Son Heung-min completed the scoring four minutes later, lifting Spurs to 33 points, just two behind fourth-placed Manchester United. Taiwo Awoniyi's fifth goal of the season earned his team a first top-flight away success of the season to strengthen their survival hopes. Steve Cooper's resurgent side have now taken 11 points from the past 21 available, having only managed six from the previous 33, and fully merited a significant triumph on the south coast. "It's better to be out of the bottom three than in it for sure but it's one step at a time," Cooper told the BBC. "I really challenged the players to get the first away win and challenged myself and the staff. We're all in it together." He added: "The objective is not just to stay out but move up the table, but that's easier said than done and we will do everything we can to get results." West Ham were on course for their first league win since October when they took a 2-1 lead against Leeds at Elland Road but Spain international Rodrigo equalised in the 70th minute. David Moyes' side, who had lost their previous five matches in the Premier League, remain perilously placed, outside the bottom three only on goal difference. WATCH: Heartwarming! Liverpool suffered their fifth defeat of the season as Brentford inflicted a 3-1 drubbing over the Merseyside Reds on Monday. A goal apiece from Yoane Wissa, Bryan Mbeumo and an own goal from Ibrahima Konate were enough for the Bees to start the year off on a sparkling note.

Liverpool had themselves to blame for the loss as defensive errors and tactical lapses allowed Brentford to cash in. Akin to the last year's 3-3 draw between the two sides at the same stadium, Brentford bullied Liverpool on the set pieces, especially the corners. Heavily overloading the six-yard box, Brentford drew first blood when Ibrahima Konate's own goal past a diving Alisson granted the hosts a well-deserved lead. The lead was doubled through Yoane Wissa in the 42nd minute who could have easily bagged a hattrick if it wasn't for the two marginal offside calls. Wissa scoring three goals in a single half was a prime example of the defensive fragility in the Liverpool backline. With the team looking ill-disciplined, Klopp made three changes at half-time, bringing Andy Robertson, Joel Matip and Naby Keita in place of Kostas Tsimikas, Harvey Elliot and Virgil van Dijk. The move worked almost instantly as Darwin Nunez made a great run and slotted one past David Raya. However, VAR ruled out the goal as Nunez had strayed offside. The Reds kept on the pressure and through a cushioned header from Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, managed to reduce the deficit by one. Despite conceding the goal early in the half, Brentford did not panic and managed to keep wave after wave of Liverpool attacks at bay. In the end, Brentford forward Mbeumo managed to outmuscle Liverpool centre-back Konate and scored a third for his side in the 84th minute, effectively sealing the game. Liverpool changes Liverpool went into the match making two changes from their victory against Leicester City in the midlands last week. Captain Jordan Henderson missed out due to a concussion and was replaced by Fabinho while Ibrahima Konate came in place of Joel Matip. Read more: Liverpool in talks with Saudi and Qatari consortiums after Mukesh Ambani takeover rumour: Reports The Frenchman had a fabulous World Cup where he impressed fans and critics alike with his tenacious performance. However, on Monday, Konate was directly responsible for two of three goals. Liverpool looked sluggish as Klopp's gegenpress remained non-existent, as has been the case all throughout the season. Brentford utilised the physicality of its midfield and hurled direct long balls to create chaos in the Liverpool penalty box. Klopp's team have already dropped 23 points in the season so far. They are four points adrift of the top 4 spot and 15 points behind leaders Arsenal. Last year, Liverpool managed to turn around their fortunes after going on a 10-match unbeaten streak which pushed Manchester City to the final day of the league to decide the champions. However, with a depleted midfield and an injury-prone forward line, it looks highly unlikely that Liverpool will be mounting a similar comeback unless statement signings are made in the ongoing winter transfer window. As for Brentford fans, the fans in West London are having a fairy tale season. Having already beaten the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United, the victory on Monday has propelled them to the seventh spot on the table, just behind Liverpool. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Toothless Liverpool stung 3-1 by the Bees of Brentford in Premier League encounter

Chelsea dropped more points in their quest to climb back up the Premier League standings as Serge Aurier earned Nottingham Forest a 1-1 draw with Graham Potter's side on Sunday. Fresh from their first league win in six games last time out against Bournemouth, Chelsea started well in the Nottingham drizzle, with Raheem Sterling firing them into the lead in the 16th minute with his first league goal since August.

Forest improved after the break and were desperately unlucky not to equalise early in the second half as Morgan Gibbs-White's drilled half volley hit the underside of the crossbar but bounced on the goal line and away.

The hosts kept coming and deservedly levelled things up as Aurier slotted home his first goal for his new club in the 63rd minute, with Forest looking the more likely winner from there on in. They could not complete the turnaround, however, with Chelsea hanging on for a point that leaves them eighth in the standings, seven points behind Manchester United in fourth.

The hosts remain in the relegation zone but climbed to 18th, level on 14 points with West Ham United above them.

"I think overall when the game was controlled in the first half I don't think we did well enough, our performance level wasn't good enough, didn't move the ball fast enough," Potter said.

"They use their advantages which is the environment, the crowd. The second half we didn't control it well enough."

Chelsea needed the reset that the World Cup gave them, given they had gone on their longest league run without a win, five, in 10 years prior to the tournament. It appeared they had turned the corner after the Bournemouth win and their impressive start at the City Ground. They nearly broke the deadlock in just the second minute as Mason Mount fired over from a good position.

The visitors went one better through Sterling after Christian Pulisic's cross had looped onto the crossbar and the England forward hammered home the rebound.

Chelsea continued to remain in control until the break, with Pulisic wasting a good chance to make it two just before the interval, firing straight at home goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

Brennan Johnson saw one first half effort saved, but missed an even more gilt-edged opportunity early in the second period, firing too close to Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from a good position.

Gibbs-White was causing Chelsea all kinds of problems, firing against the crossbar before playing a big part in Aurier's equaliser, curling over a corner the visitors could not clear and former Tottenham Hotspur full back pounced.

Chelsea substitute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang should have done better with a late header, but it would have been harsh on the home side, who more than warranted at least a point from the contest.

"I know we didn't win today but it was a good reference point that we can play against the big teams in the league," Forest coach Steve Cooper said. "We're in control of our destiny and we have to keep building."

"They use their advantages which is the environment, the crowd. The second half we didn't control it well enough." Chelsea needed the reset that the World Cup gave them, given they had gone on their longest league run without a win, five, in 10 years prior to the tournament.

Arsenal closed out 2022 with a 4-2 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday that gives them a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League after title rivals Manchester City and Newcastle United both dropped points. The Gunners opened up a 3-0 lead through Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Eddie Nketiah but Brighton never gave up, pulling two goals back either side of a Gabriel Martinelli strike to set up a nervous finish for the Gunners, who held on to win.

The victory leaves Arsenal in pole position on 43 points from 16 games with champions City on 36, Newcastle on 34 from 17 and Manchester United on 32 from 16.

Earlier in the day City wasted their chance to increase the pressure on Arsenal, drawing 1-1 at home to struggling Everton despite Erling Haaland's 21st league goal of the season giving them the lead.

Newcastle United also dropped home points as a 0-0 stalemate with Leeds United deprived Eddie Howe's side of a seventh successive league win.

Marcus Rashford gave the perfect response to being left out for disciplinary reasons by scoring Manchester United's winning goal in a 1-0 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers that lifted them into the Premier League's top four on Saturday. The in-form Rashford was benched by manager Erik ten Hag after being late for a team meeting but came off the bench to fire home a 76th minute winner at Molineux.

Southampton will end the year rock bottom after conceding late on to lose 2-1 at Fulham -- their fifth successive defeat.

Crystal Palace hit back from a 3-0 home defeat by Fulham on Monday to beat Bournemouth 2-0 away thanks to goals by Jordan Ayew and Eberechi Eze.

Rashford has been rejuvenated for club and country and after scoring three goals for England at the World Cup has now scored three goals in three games in all competitions since returning. But his day did not start off as planned with manager Ten Hag leaving him out of the starting line-up as punishment for what was a minor disciplinary lapse.

Without him United were struggling to break down a Wolves rearguard with his replacement Alejandro Garnacho wasting the visitors' best chance to break the deadlock. Rashford was sent on at the interval for Garnacho and sealed the points in the 76th minute when he held off Wolves' substitute Jonny before lashing the ball home from close range.

"He was bright, he was lively and he scored a goal to give a good reaction," Ten Hag said. "Everyone has to adhere to the rules and if you react like this, it is the right answer."

When Haaland latched on to Riyad Mahrez's pass to tap home in the 24th minute it looked almost a formality that City would slice Arsenal's lead down to two points.

But Everton, on a three-match losing run in the league, had other ideas and stunned the hosts after the break when Demarai Gray cut inside and unleashed a curling effort from the edge of the penalty area which beat City's goalkeeper Ederson.

Everton moved two points above the drop zone.

Newcastle's Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes wore a yellow shirt with the number 10 on the back during a minute's applause for compatriot Pele who died on Thursday as the Premier League paid tribute to the iconic player.

But he was unable to inspire his side to a victory against a resolute Leeds side who hung on for a point.
