Manchester United made a positive start to life without Cristiano Ronaldo as Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial stepped out from the Portuguese's shadow to score in a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. Ronaldo's rollercoaster second spell at Old Trafford came to an end during the World Cup break after an explosive interview in which he took aim at manager Erik ten Hag and the club's owners.

On the field, his influence had already waned since Ten Hag took charge at the start of the season. Rashford has been a player transformed under the Dutch coach and carried his fine form for England at the World Cup into the Premier League's return. A brilliantly worked corner opened the floodgates for United as Christian Eriksen picked out an unmarked Rashford inside the area to sweep into the top corner. Forest were without their first choice goalkeeper Dean Henderson as he is on loan from United and his understudy Wayne Hennessey was culpable when the home side doubled their lead just three minutes later. Rashford's burst down the left and teed up Martial at the edge of the box, but the Frenchman's strike should not have had enough power to beat the Welsh international goalkeeper.

United were also short handed at the back with Lisandro Martinez absent following Argentina's World Cup celebrations, Diogo Dalot injured and Harry Maguire still feeling the aftereffects of an illness. As a result Raphael Varane was forced into starting just nine days after playing 113 minutes for France in the World Cup final, while Luke Shaw lined up as a centre-back in a back four for the first time. But Forest did little to test a makeshift backline as they remain with just one goal away from home in the league all season.

Steve Cooper's men did have the ball in the net shortly before half-time, but Willy Boly's effort was ruled out for offside after a lengthy VAR check.
Ten Hag has publicly stated his desire to add a striker in the January window given Ronaldo's departure and United should have added more than one goal in the second half. Antony fired straight at Hennessey after fine play from Rashford and Bruno Fernandes gave the Brazilian a clear sight of goal.

Hennessey also stood firm to block from Martial and Rashford from close range, but the Red Devils finally got the third goal they deserved three minutes from time. The imperious Casemiro strode forward to win possession and picked out his Brazilian compatriot Fred to slot into the far corner. Victory takes United to within one point of the top four and with a game in hand to come on fourth-placed Tottenham. Forest remain rooted in the relegation zone, but just one point adrift of safety.

Chelsea manager Graham Potter praised the Blues' reaction to a poor run prior to the World Cup as they eased past Bournemouth 2-0 on Tuesday to end a five-game winless streak in the Premier League. Kai Havertz and Mason Mount struck inside the first 24 minutes to get Chelsea back in the hunt for a place in next season's Champions League. Victory took Chelsea up to eighth and within six points of the top four.

"You have to use breaks as best you can," Potter told Amazon Prime. "Evaluate and reassess and get injured players back. We used it as best we could even with players coming back at different times." However, victory came at a cost as defender Reece James limped off on his return from the knee injury which kept him out of England’s World Cup campaign.

James cruised through the first half but called for a substitution early in the second and looked disconsolate as he pointed to his knee before going to ground."You can see his quality. It's a blow for us," added Potter. "I'm not sure on the state of the injury. It's too early to say." Potter, aiming to avoid overseeing a fourth consecutive Chelsea league defeat for the first time since 1998, handed Denis Zakaria his Premier League debut.

The Swiss midfielder broke forward well to drive Chelsea up the pitch in the first half, while the effervescent attacking duo of Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic led the Bournemouth defence on a merry dance. Sterling provided the opener with an incisive low cross to the back post where Havertz slid in to convert in the 16th minute. Mount doubled the lead with a well-taken drive from the edge of the box as Chelsea stepped up another gear before Pulisic had another goal disallowed for a foul by Havertz in the build-up.

After three games in all competitions without scoring a goal, the Blues were determined to end their disappointing streak and get their season back on track. Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers did well to deny James after a dynamic burst forward, then made an even better save to foil Sterling before the break to keep his team in the game. Havertz fired wide and Mount forced Travers into a smart low stop as Chelsea tried to put the game out of sight.

In the end they didn't need to as Bournemouth failed to threaten other than Jaidon Anthony's late free-kick that was beaten away by Kepa Arrizabalaga. "We won't be measured on games at Chelsea," said Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil. "You need everything to go for you. The response to being 2-0 down, they showed incredible belief we could get something from the game." A fifth defeat in six league games leaves Bournemouth just three points above the relegation zone

'We want him...': Erik ten Hag calls on this England defender to bring his WC form to United

One of the most popular clubs in the world, Manchester United, has been put up for sale by their current owners — The Glazer family, leaving several potential buyers around the globe on red alert. United are one of the most successful clubs in the history of English and European football with a global fan base only bettered by a few.

Technology giants Apple are reportedly interested in purchasing the Premier League club and are already planning a staggering £ 5.8 billion ($7 billion) takeover. Apple is the largest technology firm in the world with an annual turnover of around $378 billion in 2021.

As per a report in Daily Star, Apple CEO Tim Cook is keen to explore a deal to purchase United from the Glazers, who have owned the club since 2005. Cook is likely to soon hold talks with the banks appointed by the Glazers to oversee the sale of the club.

The reports of Apple CEO Cook joining the long list of potential bidders for United will be music to the ears of United fans, who have long craved owners with financial might, who will be ready to pump in money into the club, which is in desperate need of a complete overhaul.

As per the report, Apple will be willing to spend big if the takeover is successful as Cook plans to build a new state-of-art stadium for the club, which can be called the best in the world. Apple, however, will face a massive challenge in transforming United and bringing them back to the top of the top.

Apple has no prior experience running a sports team or a football club and making things work at a club of the stature of United will definitely pose a challenge to the people who will be in charge. The Glazers have reportedly demanded a fee of more than £8 billion to sell the club.

Apple CEO Cook, who has a net worth of a staggering £2 trillion, is interested in placing a £ 5.8 billion bid to test the waters. If the deal goes through, being owned by Apple will make United the richest club in the world, dwarfing the values of owners of the likes of Manchester City, PSG, and Newcastle United among others.

Also Read: Japan team cleans up dressing room after historic win against Germany in FIFA World Cup, wins hearts As per the report, Apple will be willing to spend big if the takeover is successful as Cook plans to build a new state-of-art stadium for the club, which can be called the best in the world. However, Apple are not the only potential bidder in the fray with British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, United legend David Beckham and Dubai’s sovereign wealth fund among interested parties.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been in the news ever since the ongoing Premier League edition kicked off in August. Talks regarding Ronaldo's future at Manchester United were doing the rounds at regular intervals after many reports cited that the superstar striker isn't happy at the Old Trafford club. While he didn't find any takers in the summer transfer window, the Portuguese captain continued at the club where he has struggled to find a place in the starting XI.

A lot has also been written about Ronaldo's relationship with manager Erik Ten Hag. Nonetheless, it has become a major talking point once again following the footballer's recent bare it all interview with British broadcaster Piers Morgan. I feel that some people didn't want me here, not only this year but last season too," the superstar further asserted.

Mukesh Ambani enters race to buy Premier League giants Liverpool - Report

Brentford striker Ivan Toney struck twice to give his side a shock 2-1 victory at champions Manchester City on Saturday in their final Premier League game before the World Cup break.

Toney, left out of England's squad for Qatar, made the most of a bright start by Brentford, breaking the deadlock in the 16th minute when Ben Mee headed back across the box and Toney sent a looping header over Ederson and into the net.

City had a strong shout for a penalty turned down for a handball before they equalised on the stroke of halftime when Kevin De Bruyne's corner was flicked on and Phil Foden drilled home a superb half-volley for his eighth league goal of the season.

There was a lengthy stoppage just after the break when Aymeric Laporte, who has been named in Spain's World Cup squad, received treatment after an inadvertent elbow from Ethan Pinnock opened a gash on his forehead.

Foden went close to adding a second in the 71st minute, twisting and sending another half-volley fizzing goalwards, but this time it flew over the bar.

City racked up 29 goalscoring opportunities but only managed six on target as Brentford's defence suffocated their attack and restricted striker Erling Haaland - the only City starter not headed to Qatar - to a couple of half-chances.

That set the stage for Toney's winner as Brentford broke forward deep into second-half stoppage time, and the 26-year-old made no mistake as he fired home to secure a stunning victory.

"Obviously (being left out of the England squad was), a disappointment but I know I'm capable of and I won't let it put me down, I'll just keep going and keep doing well for Brentford," Toney told BT Sport.

"The motivation is the boys in the dressing room, and the fans as you can see. When we work hard, this is what we can do."

Premier League: Arsenal back on top with impressive win as Chelsea crash again

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said he hoped "magnificent" goalkeeper David de Gea would stay beyond this season at the club after seeing the Spaniard play a starring role in his side's 1-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday. De Gea produced three stunning saves in the second half to help United stretch their unbeaten run to eight in all competitions and earn a victory that moved them up to fifth in the Premier League.

However, widespread reports in the British media have said that United are not certain to extend the Spanish keeper's contract, which expires at the end of the campaign. He was already impressively good for Man United and I think he will do that in the future as well."

Marcus Rashford headed the winner in the first half at Old Trafford on Sunday, continuing his return to form this term as he passed 100 goals for his club in all competitions. I think he can develop his game even more. His heading has to improve and he worked on it, and you can see what is happening. "He is much more consistent and reliable. I am really happy with his progress. He is already a great player, but there is still a lot of room for improvement. He will have a fantastic career I am sure."

Man City boss Pep Guardiola warns Erling Haaland to lay off the carbs during World Cup break

Erling Haaland's arrival at Manchester City earlier this summer was always expected to spice up the ongoing Premier League season as the Norweigan striker came with a great reputation and huge expectations. Not many believed he would be able to replicate his Bundesliga heroics in his debut season in one of the world's most difficult leagues.

However, the Norweigan striker has managed to live up to the expectations and has been exceptional so far this season. He has been in red-hot form and has been scoring goals for fun across competitions. Haaland has already bagged 22 goals in 15 games across all competitions, including a stunning 17 goals in 11 games in the Premier League.

Haaland was on target once again as Manchester City thrashed Brighton 3-1 in their last Premier League outing. He has scored three hat-tricks already this season and goals have been coming thick and fast for the 22-year-old who has been touted by many to break the all-time record for most Premier League goals in a season.

Haaland is currently averaging 1.54 goals per game in the Premier League and he can shatter the record for most goals in a season comfortably if he can continue at the same consistency. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola too has backed Haaland to break the record.

"I didn't speak with him, I think he's happy when the team wins and not when they lose. All the strikers I have seen in my career, Samuel Eto'o, Messi, Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, Sergio Aguero, they all have incredible ambition to score goals. It's normal. He has to be like that," he added.

Haaland has already reached the halfway mark having scored 17 so far this season and needs 18 more to break the record. He will be looking to continue his red-hot form when Manchester City lock horns with his former club Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on October 25.

Former England cricket team captain Kevin Pietersen slammed Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag branding him a 'clown' for 'disrespecting' Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo has been dropped from Manchester United's squad to face Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday after he refused to come on as a substitute and left the stadium before the full-time whistle during United's 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.

While Ronaldo was criticised by many for his antics, the Portuguese superstar has also managed to find support from his cult fans, who have lashed out at Ten Hag over his treatment of the club legend. Pietersen launched a scathing attack on Ten Hag after Manchester United took to Instagram to share a post featuring cricketers who have visited their stadium.

Hopping on to the T20 World Cup trend, United portrayed how several top cricketers over the years have enjoyed their time at Old Trafford and spent time with those associated with the club. Pietersen was one of the cricketers included in United's post.

Aston Villa's 3-0 defeat at Fulham spelt the end of Steven Gerrard's reign as manager on Thursday as the former England skipper was sacked less than two hours after the final whistle.

Gerrard, who replaced Dean Smith last November, was verbally abused by Villa fans and taunted by the Fulham faithful at Craven Cottage as his side slumped to a chaotic defeat in which Douglas Luiz was sent off and Tyrone Mings scored an own goal.

"We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future," Aston Villa said in a statement.

There had been positive signs in the loss to Chelsea at the weekend but Villa were pitiful against Fulham with Gerrard admitting he was shocked by their first-half display.

Harrison Reed gave Fulham the lead in the 36th minute and Aleksandar Mitrovic scored from the penalty spot for his eighth goal of the season before a Mings own goal while trying to clear a Neeskens Kebano cross completed Villa's misery.
