Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has made "exceptional" progress at the London outfit after having suffered relegation with two clubs earlier, manager Mikel Arteta said. Before joining Arsenal in August 2021, Ramsdale was relegated from the top flight with Bournemouth and Sheffield United.

The 24-year-old has played an important role in Arsenal's title charge this season, most recently making a series of vital saves in their 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield in the last game.

"He has been really, really good and probably against the odds," Arteta told reporters on Friday. "Because when you look at his past and where he was coming from, he got relegated twice, it was difficult to imagine it.

"But we saw he had that character, charisma and personality to play for our club and the potential qualities to feed into our way of playing. When you see the development, he had in the past two seasons I think he is exceptional."

Ramsdale, who has three caps for England, has made 12 saves in the league so far, behind only Manchester United's David de Gea and Newcastle United's Nick Pope, who are tied at 13.

Arteta said the club tried to protect Ramsdale when he faced abuse on social media after his arrival, adding that he was facing criticism even before he played his first game for Arsenal.

"It was tough, he needed some support and we had to protect him, but he was ready to handle that," Arteta said. "He knew that was going to happen, we discussed that before: 'You're coming from this situation, you're going to Arsenal and you're going to have a lot of question marks over your head.' And you have to do that."

European football in recent times has been dominated by English Premier League clubs along with Spanish sides, which have seen the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and others flourish. Since 2018, only once has the Champions League final not seen an English club make the final. While Liverpool have been the epicenter, English clubs have yet again taken the baton to dominate Europe as they did at the start of the millennium. And what makes them so competitive that they are becoming the top dogs in Europe?

It is fair to say that, Real Madrid and Spain have gained the upper hand in the last decade, but on the contrary, English clubs are on the rise&nbsp;on the rise yet again. Since 2018, there have been five Champions League finals, which have seen English clubs take the podium on six occasions out of the 10. While Real Madrid had other ideas in the semifinal of the 2022 Champions League, the European stage has already seen two all-English Champions League finals in 2019 and 2021.

In 2019, English football reached its pinnacle, when the Champions League final and Europa League final were contested by English clubs. Chelsea beat Arsenal in the final of the Europa League while Liverpool won both the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup.

<h2>Level of league football</h2>

The level of league football in England has been at its peak as the so-called ‘Big Six’ has been dominating the frame. All the big six English have been well balanced on the financial sheets and have top-class training facilities. The level of football in the league in recent times has seen relegation-threatened sides beat English champions.

The level of football at the root level has helped the clubs keep their competitive nature and has helped them on the European front.

<h2>Competitiveness at domestic level</h2>

At the domestic level, competitions like FA Cup and EFL Cup have given clubs no rest despite the amount of football being played. The fatigue of players plays a key role, players have been given good competition while playing against a second-tier side. In the 2021-22 season, Liverpool played in 63 matches, the highest possible number in an English club’s season.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp underlined the fact that his team faces competition in every match they play; the domestic competitiveness has led them to reach big heights in recent seasons.

<h2>Experienced clubs with heritage in Europe</h2>

English clubs have often taken European competition seriously and that has seen them reach new heights. Eight English clubs have reached the semifinals of different European competitions in the last five seasons, this includes West Ham United’s run to the Europa League and Leicester City’s run in the Conference League in 2022.

Clubs like Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have a rich history and heritage in the competition that has seen them dominate the front row of European football. Spurs and Manchester City have also stepped into the field on great terms as the former reached the Champions League final in 2019 while City lost to Chelsea in the 2021 edition. Manchester United were unfortunate to have lost the 2021 Europa League final on penalties, but have a long and rich history in Europe that saw them lift the silverware in 2016 and the Champions League in 2008.

<h2>Top-class players and managers</h2>

Over the years, players in the Premier League have been destined to succeed and have shown their potential big-time. Cristiano Ronaldo led Manchester United to the cusp of glory in 2008 while Didier Drogba has the same pedigree at Chelsea. Players like Mohammed Salah, Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne have now taken the baton as the modern-day greats from the Premier League.

One of the most important reasons for the success of English clubs is the tactical switches from the managers. While Jose Mourinho has been the master of the game, Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel revolutionised the English game with their semi-attacking style of football. While Guardiola is yet to find the missing piece in the puzzle, it only looks like a matter of time before he gets his hand on the coveted trophy.

Other managers like Antonio Conte, Mauricio Pochettino and Maurizio Sarri have also taken English football to a different level with their managerial tactics.

<h2>Comparison with Spanish clubs</h2>

Recently the likes of Real Madrid, Villareal, Sevilla, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have won different European competitions. However, with only one domestic competition apart from the league, players in Spanish leagues get good rest. Also, there is a winter break in La Liga which makes it a safer environment for the players and managers to switch their tactics.

However, English clubs are once again reaching the pinnacle of the game and with the presence of the winter break in the coming season, Premier League clubs are only expected to reach new heights. Even to a lesser extent, clubs like West Ham and Leicester flirting with relegation could also end up winning European competition as they have good infrastructure compared to other leagues across Europe.

Explained | Why English Premier League clubs are dominating European football once again

Arsenal blew a two-goal lead in a pulsating 2-2 draw at Liverpool on Sunday to give Manchester City fresh hope of retaining the Premier League title. Mikel Arteta's men edged six points ahead of City at the top of the table, but the defending champions now have the destiny of the title in their own hands. City have a game in hand and host the Gunners at the Etihad later this month.

Goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus appeared to have Arsenal cruising towards an eighth consecutive league win. But Mohamed Salah pulled a goal back before half-time to spark a Liverpool fightback.

Salah missed a second-half penalty before Roberto Firmino headed in the equaliser three minutes from time. Jurgen Klopp's men then missed a series of chances to complete the comeback as Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale salvaged a point for his side.

But the match will also live long in the memory for a remarkable incident just after the half-time whistle when assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis thrust an elbow into the face of Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson.

Arsenal remain without an away league win to Liverpool since 2012 as they stumbled over one of the major hurdles between them and the title despite a perfect start.

It took just eight minutes for the visitors to make the breakthrough as Bukayo Saka surged through the Liverpool defence and the ball broke kindly for Martinelli to prod past his Brazilian international teammate Alisson Becker.

Only a glaring miss from Jesus and a fine save by Alisson to deny Oleksandr Zinchenko prevented Arsenal from being out of sight within 15 minutes.

Virgil van Dijk's slump in form has played a major role in Liverpool's collapse from the team that came close to an unprecedented quadruple last season to mid-table mediocrity.

The Dutch centre-back was caught on his heels as Arsenal doubled their lead when Jesus was left unmarked to head in Martinelli's cross on 28 minutes.

But signs of a youthful side going for their first title finally showed once Salah halved the arrears three minutes before half-time.

Liverpool could even have been level by the break as Jordan Henderson blazed another big chance over. But that was just the start of the drama as Robertson was elbowed by assistant referee Hatzidakis as the players left the field for half-time.

That incident fired Liverpool up as they came flying out the blocks in the second half and had a golden opportunity to level when Rob Holding brought down Diogo Jota, but Salah slotted the penalty wide.

Salah nearly made amends moments later as Ramsdale produced a stunning save to keep his side in front and the England goalkeeper was needed again nine minutes from time to save a one-on-one with Darwin Nunez.

Firmino finally made Liverpool's pressure count when he headed home Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross to set up a grandstand finish.

Salah blazed over a glorious chance before Ramsdale made remarkable saves from the Egyptian and Ibrahima Konate to ensure Arsenal escaped just with a point.

But Liverpool's rally may prove too little, too late both on the day and for their chances of Champions League football next season.

The Reds have failed to win any of their five games since a remarkable 7-0 win over Manchester United last month.

Liverpool remain down in eighth, 12 points adrift of the top four.

Burnley are back in the Premier League after they beat Middleborough 2-1 on Friday, April 7 evening to clinch their place amongst the elites. The Lanchshire-based club was relegated on the final day of the season in 2022, but have bounced straight back as they went 19 points clear of third placed Luton, which will see them finish in the top two and therefore secure their return amongst the elites.

"We wanted to experience this at some point but quicker is better sometimes as well."

Heading into matchday 40, Burnley needed a certain set of results to go their way to clinch promotion on Friday evening. A win against Middleborough coupled with a draw for Luton would have secured promotion for the two-time English champions.

EFL Championship: Burnley clinch Premier League return after 2-1 win at lackluster Middleborough

Manchester United's Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial secured a well-earned 2-0 victory over Everton as the hosts climbed above Newcastle United into provisional third spot in the Premier League on Saturday.

Erik ten Hag's United are in the thick of the race to finish in the top four, with 56 points from 29 games, three ahead of Newcastle, who have a game in hand, and six more than Tottenham Hotspur, with those sides playing later on Saturday.

The defeat for Sean Dyche's Everton, who are battling to avoid relegation, leaves them in 16th spot, outside the drop zone only on goal difference and level on 27 points with Nottingham Forest in 17th place and Bournemouth who are 18th.

"It was great football from ourselves and we were disappointed to only go in (at halftime) 1-0 up," United captain Harry Maguire told BT Sport. "The game should have been gone. The lads started on the front foot, we were aggressive, we created chance after chance after chance and I think if the score was three, four or five nobody would have any arguments."

United pressed goalkeeper Jordan Pickford into duty early at a sun-drenched Old Trafford and set up camp in Everton's half for most of the game.

They could have got on the board in the 12th minute when Antony's shot rebounded off the post to Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who missed an easy tap-in, sending the ball wide of the far post.

Ellis Simms had Everton's best chance in the 20th minute. His shot beat keeper David De Gea but rolled just wide of the net and Dyche buried his head in his hands.

McTOMINAY STRIKES

The Reds were finally rewarded in the 36th minute when Jadon Sancho threaded a pass to the charging McTominay who netted from close range.

Bruno Fernandes nearly doubled United's lead in the 67th minute but Pickford leapt to tip the ball over the crossbar. Marcus Rashford, who had numerous chances on his 350th appearance for United in all competitions, set up Martial's goal in the 71st with a cross that found the second-half substitute alone in the box to score.

United were missing Casemiro, who completed a four-game ban on Saturday, but fellow midfielder Christian Eriksen returned from an ankle injury when he came on after 77 minutes for his first appearance since Jan. 28.

The Toffees have won only once on the road this season in early October against Southampton but have had improved results in recent weeks including a home draw with Spurs on Monday.

Since Dyche took over in January, Everton have lost just four of their last 10 games, a streak that included a victory over league leaders Arsenal.

Later on Saturday, Newcastle visit Brentford, while Tottenham host Brighton who are sixth.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said he was undeterred by the club's poor record at Anfield, targeting a win against Liverpool on Sunday that would keep them on course to win the Premier League title.

Arteta's men lead Manchester City by eight points at the top of the table ahead of the weekend fixtures, with Pep Guardiola's team in action against bottom-of-the-table Southampton on Saturday.

The Gunners have not won a league game at Anfield since Arteta played in a 2-0 win in 2012.

Under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool have won the past six league meetings between the sides at home by a combined score of 22-4.

But Liverpool are languishing in eighth place in the table, 29 points behind the Gunners, and Arsenal have already ended a long wait to win away at Tottenham this season.

"We have to enjoy it," Arteta said at his pre-match press conference. "We really need to embrace the moment and go for it.

"The team is really full of enthusiasm and positivity and we know we have a big challenge but a big opportunity to go to Anfield and do something we haven't done for many years. That is what is driving the team in the last few days.

"We know what we have to do. We've played in the toughest places."

Gabriel Jesus' double in a 4-1 win over Leeds last week -- his first league start since November -- has given Arteta options up front.

Bukayo Saka is set to return after missing the match due to illness, meaning only two of Jesus and the in-form Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard are likely to start.

"It's much better to have that problem because at the moment they are all looking really good," added Arteta.

"It depends on the moment, what we want to do, the quality we are seeking and the relationships that we want on certain days.

"Then obviously you can make five changes (during the game), so you have the ability to change the game with those players, which is great for us."

Former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard set to return for second spell at Stamford Bridge on interim basis

Chelsea football club has been thriving with success in the last two decades since Russian Roman Abramovich took over the reins of the club in 2003. The club enjoyed unprecedented success before American owner Todd Boehly took over the charge of the club in 2022. In one of the significant moves in the club’s recent history, he sacked Thomas Tuchel and handed the charge of the club to English manager Graham Potter. The move backfired big time on the American owners as Potter was sacked on Sunday, April 2. But what exactly went wrong between Potter and the football club?

<h3>A match not made in heaven</h3>

Potter had been making a name as a good manager in English football for a while with approaches from big clubs surrounding him in the last two seasons. Chelsea eventually broke the bank and paid £21 million to Brighton to get the services of the former Swansea manager. However, with the high ambitions of Chelsea and Potter’s defensive mindset, it was never a match made in heaven and the Englishman was sacked after just seven months at the helm of the club.

<h3>Lack of experience in managing at the top</h3>

The 0-2 defeat at home to Aston Villa saw the last straw of Potter’s Chelsea rein and it ultimately came down to the experience factor. Potter’s opposite number in his final match, Unai Emery showed no sympathy for him, having gone through similar circumstances at Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain. Potter’s inexperience in managing a success-hungry club like Chelsea was always going to be a tall order.

Player management during World Cup time, injuries, suspensions and unavailability of certain players all contributed to Potter’s exit. An experienced coach will use his resources and design the tactics accordingly to navigate a team’s success. However, Potter was seen as far from ideal and lacked ideas during Champions League and domestic cup matches.

An experienced coach like Carlo Ancelotti would have let a weaker team play in the Champions League and would have concentrated on the league form. This was not the case with Potter as he went full throttle in cup games, risking the players that could have helped him save the league season and his job.

<h3>No idea about the squad</h3>

Not much could be blamed on Potter, but given the resources that you have at your disposal success is apparently something that is demanded. Chelsea spent in excess of £600 million in the last two transfer windows, breaking the records left, right and center. While the owners thought getting players like Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk and Joao Felix would revive the club’s fortune, it was not the case.

Potter’s lack of idea of the players and their mentality and comfort zone saw him end up with another dilemma. Whether to cope with new signing Benoit Badiashile or to stick with Trevoh Chalobah, whether to utilize Noni Madueke or not were some of the unanswered questions in the Potter era.

<h3>No proper pre-season</h3>

While Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea could cross paths in the Champions League semifinal this season, it was the German who took charge of the pre-season and not the 47-year-old Potter. No time spent with players and understanding them made a huge difference while picking the team. Especially, when senior players like Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta got injured, a better pre-season would have given them a proper idea of who is to be used as a utility player.

<h3>Optimised tactics that did not work</h3>

Potter’s tactics in before he came to Chelsea were designed according to the team’s philosophy. Brighton were a stabilised Premier League club when he took over the charge in 2019, but the primary ambition still was to avoid the drop to the second tier. The model of working at Swansea was about promotion and eventually Premier League survival, unfortunately, that did not materialise.

The “so-called” optimized tactics of Potter failed to make an impact at Chelsea as the Blues needed advanced and attacking form. Potter failed to replicate his successful predecessors and was thus shown the door when the club was not moving in the right direction.

<h3>Too many players and egos to deal with</h3>

While Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti took charge at Stamford Bridge, their successful CV, saw them earn the respect of every player in the dressing room. Thomas Tuchel also arrived on the back of a Champions League final while Frank Lampard was an adorable figure at the club. Potter for that instance a ‘dead-man walking’ who neither had the CV nor the experience to handle big egos.

At the end of his reign, Potter was mocked as "Harry" and "Hogwarts" for not dealing with the egos of the players and failing to stamp his authority.

Potter was slightly fortunate to have survived for a longer duration as under previous ownership winning 12 of the 31 matches would have seen him depart sooner rather than later. For now, it is safe to say that, Chelsea can still save their season like in 2012 and 2021 with mid-season managerial change, which saw them lift the Champions League trophy.&nbsp;

Explained| Why Graham Potter failed as Chelsea manager

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has penned a new contract until 2027 as he extends his stay at Old Trafford for another four years. Shaw signed from Southampton in 2014, will complete a decade at the club at the end o next season and will be one of United’s longest-serving players. Only David de Gea has served more time at the club than Shaw who has been a constant feature in the team in recent times.

"Nine years ago, I signed for this amazing club, and I'm thrilled to be extending my stay,” Shaw said after extending his contract.

The former Southampton has featured predominantly for the first time under the reigns of Louis Van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Goonar Solkjaer and others. This season he has yet again impressed under Erik ten Hag and is the club’s number choice in defense.

"I've grown immensely since coming to Manchester all those years ago, both as a person and as a player; I know what is needed to succeed at a club like this.

"We're at the beginning of our journey under the manager and his coaching staff. We've been successful already this season, but we want much more. There's a great opportunity to create something special here, and I'm going to give everything to be part of that."

Shaw’s time with United has also seen him earn a call-up to the England side where he has been impeccable. Shaw has earned 29 England caps and was part of the England team that reached the final of the Euro 2020, before losing to France on penalties. Indeed, Shaw scored England’s opening goal in that final and looked nailed on before the Italians managed to come back.

Manchester United on the flip side are having a mixed season and are involved in a tough battle for a place in the top four. All Manchester United, Newcastle United and Tottenham are on 50 points, but Spurs have played two matches more than the other two. United still have an opportunity to win the Europa League and the FA Cup as they try to hunt down the trophies at the business end of the campaign.

Premier League: Luke Shaw extends Manchester United stay; pens new contract until 2027

Chelsea have sacked manager Graham Potter, the London club said on Sunday after a string of poor results left the expensively-assembled team 11th in the Premier League. Potter had been signed by Chelsea's new ownership in September after they prised him away from Brighton &amp; Hove Albion but the Englishman lasted 31 games, winning only 12, before the owners pulled the trigger.

While Potter oversaw wins in the Champions League where they topped their group after beating AC Milan twice and knocked out Borussia Dortmund, their league form nosedived as they fell out of the top four and into the bottom half of the table.

His last game in charge was Chelsea's 2-0 loss at home to Aston Villa on Saturday which led to boos and jeers from the fans at Stamford Bridge as the result left them 12 points off the top four and in danger of missing out on Europe next season.

"Graham has agreed to collaborate with the club to facilitate a smooth transition," Chelsea said in a statement. "In his time with the club, Graham has taken us to the quarter final of the Champions League, where we will face Real Madrid. Chelsea would like to thank Graham for all his efforts and contribution and wish him well for the future. Bruno Saltor will take charge of the team as interim head coach."

Saltor's first game in charge is on Tuesday at home to eighth-placed Liverpool, who sit four points above them.

"Along with our incredible fans, we will all be getting behind Bruno and the team as we focus on the rest of the season," co-controlling owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali said. "We have 10 Premier League games remaining and a Champions League quarter-final ahead. We will put every effort and commitment into every one of those games so that we can end the season on a high."

Potter is the 12th manager to be sacked in the Premier League this season with the announcement coming hours after relegation-threatened Leicester City parted ways with Brendan Rodgers by mutual agreement.

The departures of Rodgers and Potter set a new Premier League record for most dismissals in a season, beating the 10 that happened in four other seasons, most recently in 2017-18.

Potter was a surprise choice to replace Thomas Tuchel who was sacked by the club in September after a poor start to the season. He initially impressed as Chelsea went nine games unbeaten before a 4-1 hammering at Brighton on Oct. 30.

Since then, it has been a struggle for Potter who failed to get the best out of a squad that had been heavily reinforced over two transfer windows in which owners Boehly and Clearlake Capital splashed more than 600 million euros ($650.76 million) on new players.

But Newcastle might swap silverware for a lucrative Champions League berth and second half goals from Willock and Wilson at a raucous St James' Park moved them closer to that ambition.

Newcastle's third successive league win -- and their first against United since 2019 -- took them above their fourth placed opponents on goal difference.

They sit one point ahead of fifth placed Tottenham, who visit Everton on Monday, as the race hots up to qualify for next season's Champions League via a top four finish.

It is 46 years since Newcastle last finished above United, but the Magpies, fuelled by Howe's astute management and the financial backing of their Saudi owners, now have a rare chance to emulate that feat.

United are without a win in their last three league games, thrashed 7-0 at Liverpool and then held to a goalless draw by lowly Southampton before this setback on Tyneside.

United's first major trophy in six years was supposed to be the start of a new golden era, but instead they have failed to score in three successive league matches for the first time since February 2020.

It was a dispiriting start to a busy run of nine fixtures in April as Erik ten Hag's men look to nail down a top four finish, while aiming to advance to the Europa League semi-finals and FA Cup final.

Marcus Rashford started for United after missing England's recent Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine due to a toe injury.

Yet, in the midst of a superb personal campaign, this was a rare dud for Rashford and United looked toothless as a result.

David De Gea made a brilliant double save to keep United level, repelling Alexander Isak's header from Jacob Murphy's cross and then blocking Willock's close-range effort on the rebound.

The Magpies' pressure was finally rewarded in the 65th minute when Bruno Guimaraes clipped a cross to the far post and Allan Saint-Maximin headed back towards Willock, who nodded home from virtually on the goalline.

Wilson put the result beyond doubt after 88 minutes with a clinical close-range header from Kieran Trippier's free-kick.

<h2>West Ham boost</h2>

In Sunday's other game, West Ham scrambled out of the relegation zone as Nayef Aguerd's first goal for the club sealed a crucial 1-0 victory against fellow strugglers Southampton.

David Moyes' side kicked off at the London Stadium languishing second bottom of the table, with Southampton in last place.

But Morocco defender Aguerd's maiden goal since signing from French club Rennes last year lifted the Hammers up to 14th.

West Ham are just one point above the relegation zone, but they have a little breathing space thanks to their first win in three league games.

On the day Leicester sacked Brendan Rodgers after their slump into the bottom three, Hammers boss Moyes must have breathed a sigh of relief when the final whistle blew on a result that may have saved his job.

Southampton remain bottom of the table and sit three points from safety after their winless run reached four games.

Aguerd eased West Ham's mounting anxiety in the 25th minute as the Morocco defender rose to power a header past Gavin Bazunu from Thilo Kehrer's free-kick.

The goal was initially disallowed for offside, but after an interminable VAR check that lasted over three minutes, Aguerd was finally able to celebrate.

Southampton nearly equalised in the final minutes when James Ward-Prowse's cross was headed against the bar by Paul Onuachu.

"We have played better than that and not won this season, but today was all about the result," Moyes said.

"I have to get results. There's no protection to stop me losing my job."

Premier League: Newcastle stun Manchester United, West Ham move up from bottom three

For Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta the return of Gabriel Jesus to his forward line must feel like the signing of a new player. The Brazilian was back in the starting line-up for the first time in the Premier League since November on Saturday and struck twice in a 4-1 defeat of Leeds United. The former Manchester City frontman, who suffered a knee injury at the World Cup, was substituted in the second half and left the pitch to a standing ovation.

His first goals in six months helped Arsenal restore their eight-point lead over Manchester City in the title race and with nine games remaining the Londoners are close to winning the Premier League for the first time since 2004.

There are several tough hurdles still to overcome and Arteta's squad is being stretched by injuries and illness, but Jesus being back is a massive tonic.

"Delighted for him. They all were. We were all clapping for him," Arteta told reporters. "He's been working so hard for the last four or five months with a lot of support from the team and the staff. Today he deserved the chance to start. He grabbed the opportunity with a lot of conviction and with two goals."

Sickness meant Arsenal's in-form Bukayo Saka was only on the bench on Saturday while Ben White, who scored their second goal, was also struggling but managed to start.

Centre back William Saliba was also ruled out through injury as was forward Eddie Nketiah who has played such a key role while Jesus was recovering from injury.

Yet despite being off the pace in the first half, Arsenal again showed the kind of togetherness and sprit that will be hugely important in the nervous weeks ahead.

"We are really looking forward to it," Arteta said of the challenge. "We go to the next target and we go for it."

On the depth of his squad, Arteta said: "First of all the players have to feel trust, that we trust them. They need to feel that confidence. The players have to have the chance, and they need to be preparing to perform in the right way to have the chance like Rob (Holding) did and to actually perform.

"I'm really happy. We need everybody. We've had long-term injuries and the team needs to somehow find a way to keep winning and keep performing."

Premier League: Arteta happy for Gabriel Jesus as Arsenal maintain eight-point lead over City in title race

Manchester City coped without the injured Erling Haaland to keep the Premier League title race alive by coming from behind to thrash Liverpool 4-1 on Saturday. Goals from Julian Alvarez, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish moved the defending champions back to within five points of Arsenal at the top of the table.

City and Liverpool have finished as the top two in four of the past five Premier League seasons, but the Reds are struggling just to qualify for the Champions League after a dreadful campaign and were given another lesson in the gap they have to bridge be back challenging next season. A chastening defeat leaves Jurgen Klopp's men still seven points adrift of the top four down in sixth.

A groin injury meant Haaland was watching on from the stands alongside his father and former City midfielder Alfie Haaland. Despite the absence of their 42-goal striker, Pep Guardiola's men made a positive start as Alisson Becker was forced into saves from Gundogan and Rodri before Riyad Mahrez fired a free-kick inches wide. But City were caught out on the counter-attack as Liverpool went in front on 17 minutes.

The home fans were screaming for offside as Diogo Jota broke in behind the City defence before teeing up Mohamed Salah to slot home his 23rd goal of the season. A VAR review showed Manuel Akanji had played the Portuguese forward onside.

Guardiola was on his knees when Mahrez blasted over another great chance inches over. But he did not have to wait long for his side to show their quality even shorn of Haaland. De Bruyne, Mahrez and Grealish combined to open up the Liverpool defence and Alvarez was left with the simple task of slotting in his 13th goal of the season despite spending most of the campaign as Haaland's deputy.

It took just 53 seconds of the second half for City to edge in front thanks to another scintillating team move. Alvarez was the creator this time as his cross-field pass freed Mahrez to race into acres of space behind the Liverpool defence. The Algerian's cross was perfectly weighted to cut out Alisson for De Bruyne to tap into an unguarded net.

If City's first two goals were the fruit of collective brilliance, Liverpool's defending for the third summed up a miserable season for Klopp's men. Alvarez was afforded an incredible amount of time inside the box by Fabinho to pick out a shot and, when his effort was blocked by Trent Alexander-Arnold, Gundogan also had the space to take a touch before firing into the top corner.

Liverpool have now conceded three or more goals in nine games this season and the punishment did not end there for the visitors. Grealish was the standout individual on the day and rounded off arguably his best performance as a City player with the fourth goal.

City's movement off the ball was again too good for a cumbersome Liverpool defence as Grealish and De Bruyne exchanged a one-two before the Premier League's most expensive player of all time side-footed into the far corner.

Arsenal, who face Leeds later on Saturday, maintain the upper hand in the title race. But City could be coming to the boil at just the right time after scoring 17 goals in their last three games and with Arsenal still to visit the Etihad later this month.

Premier League: Manchester City romp Liverpool in statement 4-1 win; move within 5 points of Arsenal

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has returned to training after picking up a knock before the international break but a late call will be taken on his return to action this weekend, manager Erik Ten Hag said on Friday (March 31).

Rashford missed England's European Championship qualifying wins over Italy and Ukraine after withdrawing from the squad earlier this month due to a knock he suffered during United's FA Cup quarter-final win over Fulham.

The 25-year-old is United's top scorer this season and has been in scintillating form with 30 goals for club and country.

"I have good hope, he trained but he had to do some treatment, he had to do some individual training. Today he joined in with the group," Ten Hag told reporters ahead of Sunday's trip to Newcastle United.

"We have one more day, so I have a good hope he will be available... I have seen him back this week and he has shown a lot of energy, a lot of motivation. It was a good spirit and a lot of focus."

Rashford's rise this season has seen him linked with a move to top European sides but Ten Hag said he wants to keep the club's talisman with talks ongoing over a contract extension. Rsahford's current deal ends next season.

"It's an internal process. We focus on winning games, of course also planning for the future, so in the back we're working on that," Ten Hag added.

"It's about agents, it's about football director John Murtough. Rashy and I are focusing on performing."

Ten Hag also said injured French forward Anthony Martial could make his return for the first time in two months.

United are third in the league standings with 50 points but fifth-placed Newcastle can overhaul Ten Hag's side on goal difference if they win at St James' Park.

Newcastle have the best defensive record in the Premier League this season having conceded only 19 goals in 26 games but the Dutch boss was more concerned about their time-wasting tactics.

"We know they delay, it's something that the refereeing doesn't want. They want to have tempo in the game, that is the aim of the Premier League, so they have to be consistent to let the game go," Ten Hag said.

"They've had a great season with their manager (Eddie Howe)... It's a team that is really hard to beat. We are looking forward to the challenge and the evidence is we can beat them."

Premier League: Marcus Rashford doubt for Man Utd's crunch Newcastle affair despite returning to training

Former Manchester United stars Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and Nemanja Vidic are among the 15 former players shortlisted to join the Premier League Hall of Fame. So far, there have been 16 previous inductees. Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, legendary managers of Manchester United and Arsenal respectively, became the first managers to be a part of the Hall of Fame on Wednesday.

The Hall of Fame recognises and acknowledges players and personalities who achieved massive success and made a significant contribution in the Premier League competition since its inception in 1992, as per Sky Sports. It is the highest individual honour that is awarded by the league.

Premier League: Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger become first managerial inductees in Hall of Fame

Antonio Conte's volatile Tottenham reign came to an almost inevitable end on Sunday as the intense Italian parted ways with the club "by mutual agreement" after 16 months in charge.

Conte, 53, arrived to take charge of the under-achieving Premier League outfit in November 2021.

After spending much of his time making veiled complaints about chairman Daniel Levy's failure to back him sufficiently in the transfer market, it already seemed certain Conte would depart when his contract expired at the end of this season.

But the Italian appeared to make his position less tenable with an astonishing rant at his players after Tottenham blew a two-goal lead in a damaging 3-3 draw at bottom club Southampton earlier this month.

Although they remained fourth in the Premier League after that debacle, Spurs are in serious danger of missing out on Champions League qualification -- fifth-placed Newcastle are two points behind, with two games in hand.

Levy reportedly became concerned about Conte's mood swings this season. There were claims the squad were tired of their manager's acerbic tongue, while fans bemoaned his perceived negative tactics.

The chairman would surely have preferred to keep Conte to avoid the upheaval triggered by a coaching change at such a critical time of the season.

But the manager's stinging criticism of his underachieving stars made his relationship with Levy more tricky.

To some, it appeared Conte was so fed up with Tottenham's inconsistency that his remarkable rant was an act of self-immolation designed to force his exit.

The club were dumped out of both the FA Cup and Champions League earlier this month as Conte's problems spiralled.

He had only recently returned to the touchline after a spell back in Italy recovering from gallbladder surgery and his patience ran out after Tottenham threw away a 3-1 lead with just 13 minutes remaining at Southampton.

"It's the right moment to speak because for me this is unacceptable," Conte said. "For another time we showed we are not a team.

"I see selfish players, I see players that don't want to help each other and don't put their heart in."

<h2>Alarm bells</h2>

Tottenham have been regarded as English football's biggest underachievers for decades and Conte failed to break the cycle of frustration and recrimination.

Without a major trophy since the 2008 League Cup and not crowned champions of England since 1961, Spurs remain flawed even in a period in which they have benefited from the presence of the club's record goalscorer, Harry Kane.

When pushed on the reasons for the club's continued failure to succeed under a string of different managers, Conte was scathing.

"Tottenham's story is this," he said. "Twenty years there is the owner and they never won something.

"Why? Because they are used to it here. They don't play for something important. They don't want to play under pressure."

Conte arrived at Spurs with a well-earned reputation as a serial winner.

The former Italy coach won three Serie A titles as Juventus boss, led Chelsea to their most recent Premier League crown in 2017 and ended Inter Milan's 11-year wait to become Italian champions in 2021.

Initially the signs were encouraging for Conte, and for Tottenham as well.

He guided them to an impressive top-four finish last season, coming from behind to pip north London rivals Arsenal to Champions League qualification.

But familiar alarm bells started to ring during the summer transfer window, when Conte bemoaned Levy's preference for signing younger players with sell-on potential.

Long-time Conte watchers have grown accustomed to the Italian's habit of blaming his employers for his teams' problems.

Despite his success, his spells at Chelsea and Inter ended over transfer rows.

At Tottenham, there was not even any silverware to make his rants more palatable.

English Premier League: Antonio Conte, Tottenham Hotspur part ways in 'mutual agreement'

The battle to buy Manchester United heated up on Wednesday as Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe prepared to raise their bids for the 20-time English champions.

Both parties were expected to increase their initial offers after the submission deadline of 2100 GMT was extended by merchant bank Raine, which is assisting with the sale of the club, following confusion over the timing, the BBC reported.

Sky Sports also reported that Sheikh Jassim and Ratcliffe had been granted extensions to submit fresh bids.

The new deadline for offers has not been made clear, according to the BBC.

United's owners, the Glazer family, have reportedly set a world record £6 billion ($7.3 billion) valuation for a sports club.

Sheikh Jassim's bid for 100 per cent control of the club promises to wipe United's $620 million debt and invest in a new stadium and training ground, in addition to backing for the men's and women's teams. A source close to Sheikh Jassim's bid told AFP that he remains confident his bid is "the best for the club, fans and local community."

INEOS chemical company founder Ratcliffe, a boyhood United fan, has been more circumspect in his assessment, insisting he will not pay a "stupid" price in a bidding war for one of football's most iconic clubs.

"How do you decide the price of a painting? How do you decide the price of a house? It's not related to how much it cost to build or how much it cost to paint," Ratcliffe told the Wall Street Journal this week. "What you don't want to do is pay stupid prices for things because then you regret it subsequently."

Ratcliffe, who wants the 69 per cent stake owned by the Glazer family, said his interest in United would be "purely in winning things", calling the club a "community asset".

Deeply unpopular with supporters since they saddled the club with debt in a £790 million leveraged takeover in 2005, the Glazers appeared ready to cash out at an enormous profit when they invited external investment in November.

However, they could yet shun the option of selling a controlling stake in the club, with other parties interested in a minority shareholding.

The initial offers from the first round of bidding last month were believed to have been worth around £4.5 billion.

That would surpass the Premier League record of £2.5 billion paid for Chelsea last year by a consortium led by LA Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly and private equity firm Clearlake Capital, with a further £1.75 billion promised in investment in infrastructure and players.

Bidders are expected to hear from United next week, with another round of bidding still in play.

If one bid is vastly ahead of the others, it could be chosen to enter into a period of exclusivity, which would allow further negotiation ahead of a final sale.

<h3>Elliott Investment jump to aid financing of bid</h3>

U.S.-based hedge fund giant Elliott Investment Management is planning to offer financing for a bid to take over Manchester United, sources close to the matter told Reuters. The fund has ruled itself out of a full takeover of the Premier League soccer club, the source added on Saturday. It is unclear at this stage which bid Elliott, who owned Serie A champions AC Milan until last year, will be involved in.

Qatar banker Sheikh Jassim prepares fresh bid to buy Manchester United as deadline extended

Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo reveals he do not regret leaving the club after what transpired between him and the manager Erik ten Hag, saying that particular episode made him a better man. During last year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar, United terminated Ronaldo’s contract following his explosive interview with famous British journalist Piers Morgan where he openly bashed the club, manager and its owners.

After Portugal got knocked out in the quarters, Ronaldo didn't have a club to represent. He later joined Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr in a world-record breaking deal where he would earn more than 200 million euros ($214.04 million) till 2025.&nbsp;

However, ahead of Portugal’s Euro Qualifier against Liechtenstein on March 24th, Ronaldo finally broke his silence on the exit from Old Trafford, where he not only became a legend after his first run, but he also became the top-scorer across all competitions upon his home coming at the Red Devils in 2021. The star forward said he doesn’t have any regrets, and whatever happened made him realise who are his true friends. He also added the particular episode made him a better person.

"Sometimes, you have to go through some things to see who is on my side. I have no problem saying, I had a bad career run, but there’s no time for regrets. Life goes on and, doing well or not, it was part of my growth,” said Ronaldo as quoted by Manchester Evening News.

"When we are at the top of the mountain, we often cannot see what is below. Now, I’m more prepared and learning that was important, because I had never been through this, like in the last few months. Now I’m a better man," Ronaldo added.

Meanwhile, for the first time since December last year, Ronaldo will be seen playing for Portugal. Since taking over the role from Fernando Santos, Portugal’s new coach Roberto Martínez added 38-year-old Ronaldo in the squad, who is most likely to play whole 90 minutes.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is a player who is completely committed to the national team,” Martínez said. “I don’t look at age or other aspects. He has the chance to help the team and pass on his experience to other players.”

Cristiano Ronaldo finally breaks silence on his departure from Manchester United, says he has no regrets

The greatest club in English football could soon have a new owner as bids are in the final stage to take over the famous Reds of Manchester. The 20-time league champions, Manchester United are witnessing a recent phase of off-field activity where the club is the subject of a huge tug-of-war between the riches of Qatar and the British channel with a potential bid of $6 billion. The Old Trafford outfit have attracted a big price in the market despite recently going through a turmoil of events both on and off-field, but how have United attracted such a bid despite going a decade without the Premier League title?

<h3>United bidders in market</h3>

At the time of writing, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chairman of chemicals giant INEOS and Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani are involved in a big tussle to acquire one of the biggest English clubs of all time. While the Glazers are still the holders of the club, they recently in November 2022 announced their desire to part ways with the three-time European Champions. While the early negotiations saw both Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim stay away from big bids, events in the next few days could see either of them take over the charge of Old Trafford.

<h3>Lack of silverware is not a big problem for bidders</h3>

At the end of the 2022-23 season, the Red Devils will have gone 10 years without a Premier League title. In the decade before that, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side won six Premier League titles and to date have 13 to their name since the inception of the competition in 1992. However, the amount of success and credit gained during the glory days of Sir Alex have enriched the club despite not featuring in the Champions League on a consistent basis while also not challenging for the title.

<h3>Brand value of United</h3>

According to a report published by Forbes in 2022, Manchester United are the third-most richest valued club with an estimated price tag of $4.6 billion. The club has an operating income of $128 million which makes it the most expensive British club. Only Real Madrid and Barcelona of Spain are valued more than the Old Trafford outfit.

United made an estimated $59 million on a match day courtesy of their ‘Theatre of Dreams’ that is the Old Trafford Stadium. The 75, 000 capacity stadium attracts a big chunk of the crowd and therefore a big income for the potential and present owners. Old Trafford is the biggest club stadium in England and the new owners will know that it will be a primary source of income albeit United play in the Champions League or not.

Currently, United play an average of 25 matches at home every season, 19 of which come in the Premier League while Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup matches could see the number of matches increases in tandem.

<h3>United’s big fan following</h3>

As things stand, United’s big fan following all over the world has been a major factor in them attracting a big sum from T-Shirt sales. Ironically, the T-Shirt sales of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney were the biggest landmarks for United off-field and have seen a big impact on their stocks. A tourism market and big kit sales have also led to a big financial rise for the past and present owners.

<h3>Broadcasting and commercial revenue</h3>

Despite finishing as low as seventh and sixth in the last decade, United have still coupled revenue of $2.1 billion from broadcasting rights. They remain the premier club to be on everyone’s television sets despite not winning the Champions League since 2008. The club’s reputation developed in Sir Alex’s days is the major reason why Manchester United remain a premier team.

Sponsors like Adidas and Teamviewer have also added to the cause of the Old Trafford club at present time. Last season Manchester United agreed to a mid-season deal with blockchain company Tezos to be the team's training kit sponsor. The deal is worth a reported $26.8 million per year.

Not since May 2017 had United lifted silverware before Erik ten Hag clinched glory at Wembley in the Carabao Cup in February. This ended a period of six years without a trophy at Old Trafford but also gave hopes for the fans of a potential future they could have under the Dutch manager who took the helms after an ill-tempered period that consisted of David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

A bid in the coming days could well decide the fate of the clubs, but those in the near neighbouring Manchester could have something to think of. United’s close rivals Manchester City have taken over the reins of dominance in the Premier League, but with either Sir Jim Ratcliffe or Sheikh Jassim to take over the club, the glory days and big days could yet be back for the Red Devils while Manchester City and Liverpool could start planning for the challenge that could arrive.

United bidders in market At the time of writing, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chairman of chemicals giant INEOS and Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani are involved in a big tussle to acquire one of the biggest English clubs of all time. Lack of silverware is not a big problem for bidders At the end of the 2022-23 season, the Red Devils will have gone 10 years without a Premier League title. Brand value of United According to a report published by Forbes in 2022, Manchester United are the third-most richest valued club with an estimated price tag of $4.6 billion. Explained | Why Manchester United have attracted biggest takeover bid despite recent silverware drought

Prospective Manchester United owner Jim Ratcliffe says he will not pay a "stupid" price for the Premier League giants, with more bidders expected to enter the race to take over at Old Trafford. The British billionaire is one of two interested parties to have publicly announced their bids to Raine, the merchant bank brought in to assist the club in assessing offers. Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani is the other.

<h3>Glazers wanting to parting ways</h3>

United's unpopular owners, the Glazer family, announced in November they were conducting a strategic review, with the sale of the club one option being considered. The Americans' asking price is belived to be $6 billion.

Ratcliffe, chairman of chemicals giant INEOS, and his team held talks with the club on Friday during a visit to Old Trafford and the Carrington training complex, a day after Sheikh Jassim's representatives visited United. But in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the 70-year-old Ratcliffe said he would not pay over the odds for the 20-time English champions.

"How do you decide the price of a painting?" he said. "How do you decide the price of a house? It's not related to how much it cost to build or how much it cost to paint.

"What you don't want to do is pay stupid prices for things because then you regret it subsequently."

<h3>Ratcliffe’s interest in football</h3>

Ratcliffe, who already owns French club Nice, said his interest in United would be "purely in winning things", calling the club a "community asset", rather than a financial one.

Sky News said Tuesday that Sheikh Jassim and Ratcliffe were understood to be preparing second bids before a Wednesday deadline for second offers, adding that a number of other parties could enter the bidding process.

Elliott Investment Management has also reportedly made it through to the second stage of the process, although the firm is believed to be offering funding rather than a takeover.

Manchester United takeover: Jim Ratcliffe unlikely to pay 'stupid price' to purchase Premier League giants

Crystal Palace have reappointed Roy Hodgson as their manager until the end of the season as they try to avoid relegation in the Premier League. Palace, currently sitting 12th in the Premier League are just three points above the relegation zone and parted ways with Patrick Vieira last week after a torrid start to 2023. However, Hodgson who was the man at the helm previously until 2021 will take charge of the side after the international break.

<h3>Hodgson delighted to return as manager</h3>

"It is a privilege to be asked to return to the club, which has always meant so much to me, and to be given the important task of turning the team's fortunes around," Hodgson said in a club statement.

"Our sole objective now is to start winning matches, and to get the points necessary to ensure our Premier League status."

Hodgson was last seen in the Premier League with Watford where he was unable to avoid relegation with the Greater London side. The 75-year-old will be assisted by Paddy McCarthy, with Ray Lewington returning as first-team coach.

"We are obviously in a very challenging period but we believe that Roy’s and Ray’s experience, knowledge of the club and players, alongside Paddy, can help fulfill the immediate requirement of keeping us in the league," Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish said.

<h3>Palace’s tough start to 2023</h3>

The South London side has endured a tough start to 2023 while there are also the join-lowest scorers in the league. The Selhurst Park outfit has scored just 22 Premier League goals and will need a strong finish to the reason if they are to avoid playing in the second tier. Palace was promoted to the Premier League in 2013 after winning the playoff final and has since enjoyed a decade in the top division of English football.

Hodgson’s first assignment with Palace will come after the international break against fellow strugglers Leicester City. The 2016 champions are also caught in the dogfight to avoid the drop and will provide an intriguing start to Hodgson’s second tenure as manager of the side.

Premier League: Crystal Palace reappoint Roy Hodgson as manager; succeeds Patrick Vieira until end of season

Arsenal surged eight points clear at the top of the Premier League as Bukayo Saka's brace inspired a 4-1 rout of Crystal Palace on Sunday. Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring in the first half at the Emirates Stadium to put the leaders on course for a sixth successive league victory. It was redemption for Martinelli, whose missed penalty condemned Arsenal to Europa League last 16 defeat in their shoot-out against Sporting Lisbon on Thursday.

Mikel Arteta's side needed just 45 minutes against struggling Palace to erase the bitter taste of that loss. Saka followed Martinelli's goal by doubling Arsenal's lead before half-time. Granit Xhaka netted the third after the interval and Jeff Schlupp's reply was no consolation as the influential Saka's second capped Arsenal's stylish display.

PL: Bukayo Saka scores a brace as Arsenal crush Crystal Palace 4-1 at home, move eight points clear at top

Alexander Isak's stoppage time penalty lifted Newcastle to within a point of the Premier League top four with a 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest on Friday.

The Magpies had fallen behind when Sven Botman gifted Emmanuel Dennis the opening goal on 26 minutes.

But Isak levelled for Eddie Howe's men and ended Forest's nine-game unbeaten home league run stretching back to September with a cool spot-kick after Moussa Niakhate handled inside his own area.

Defeat leaves Forest still two points above the relegation zone, but they deserved little more after being outplayed from start to finish.

Newcastle ended a near two-month wait for a Premier League win last weekend in beating Wolves but back-to-back victories has put them right back in the race for Champions League football next season.

The closest the visitors came to turning their early dominance into a lead was when Renan Lodi turned Isak's cross onto his own crossbar.

Instead it was Forest who went in front completely against the run of play thanks to a howler from Botman.

The Dutch centre-back has been a major factor in Newcastle's success this season but his attempted pass back to goalkeeper Nick Pope was intercepted by Dennis, who produced a stunning chipped finish beyond Pope and Kieran Tripper for just his second Forest goal.

The crossbar came to the home side's rescue again when Sean Longstaff's deflected strike from the edge of the box came back off the woodwork.

Newcastle finally got their reward in first half stoppage time when the club's record signing Isak acrobatically flicked in Joe Willock's cross off the post.

The pattern of play continued after the break as the Magpies laid siege to the Forest goal.

Former Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Keylor Navas had to be at his best to turn over powerful drives from Elliot Anderson and Bruno Guimaraes.

Anderson then thought he had his first senior goal when he headed in Isak's cross at the back post.

However, the goal was controversially disallowed after a VAR check for offside against Longstaff in the build-up despite the ball breaking to the midfielder off a Forest player.

Premier League: Isak fires Newcastle to within sight of top four

Premier League outfit Crystal Palace have parted ways with manager Patrick Vieira after the club endured a tough period since the turn of the year. The former France international who took charge of the team in 2021, led Palace to an FA Cup final and 12th-place finish in the Premier League last season. However, a run of 12 matches without a win in all competitions saw Palace pull the plug ahead of their visit to Vieira's former club Arsenal.

<h3>Palace part ways with Vieira</h3>

"It is with enormous regret that this difficult decision has been made," chairman Steve Parish said.

"Ultimately, results in recent months have placed us in a precarious league position and we felt a change is necessary to give us the best chance of retaining Premier League status."

Premier League: Relegation threatened Crystal Palace sack Patrick Vieira after 12-match winless run

Antonio Neill, the man who sent a racist text to Brentford and England striker Ivan Toney has been handed a three-year ban from all UK stadiums, confirmed on Tuesday, March 14. The case that took place on October 14, 2022, saw Neill direct racist text to the Brentford man who has been in excellent form for both club and country. Toney had raised the concern on his Instagram handle and asked for a police investigation into the matter.

<h3>Man handed ban and suspended prison</h3>

The incident was brought into the limelight by the star striker upon which police carried investigation and found the suspect in Blyth. After an investigation into the matter, Neill pleaded guilty in the case which was investigated by the police as a ‘non-football’ matter as the incident took place outside the ground parameters.

The man had pleaded guilty in the Newcastle Magistrates' Court in January and was sentenced to jail on Monday. The case has set a unique example in the judiciary system of the UK with non-football activities like racism becoming a big issue in recent times.

Brentford and Northumberland Police are describing this as a "landmark ruling" because it is "the first of its kind to be issued under the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022".

While Toney has won his battle in the racism case, he could be on the receiving end in another case relating to betting. The 26-year-old could be handed a Premier League (PL) ban for breaching the betting policies and could face more action in the coming days.

A Premier League top four finish for Tottenham Hotspur this season would be like winning the title, manager Antonio Conte said on Saturday after his team bounced back from their midweek Champions League exit with a 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest.

Harry Kane bagged a first-half double and Son Heung-min added a third as Spurs eased the pressure on Conte, whose future at the club has been the source of speculation after Wednesday's Champions League elimination at the hands of AC Milan.

The victory was Spurs' first in four games after a demoralising 10 days during which they also crashed out of the FA Cup and lost to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the league.

"For us to finish in the top four is like winning the Premier League," said Conte, who led Tottenham to a fourth-placed finish last season. "It happened last season, and I spoke about it being a miracle. This season it will be much more difficult, there are many teams involved and in this moment there is only one place available."

Tottenham have 48 points from 27 games, six more than fifth-placed Liverpool, who suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth but have a game in hand. Newcastle United, who play Wolves on Sunday, are a further point adrift of Liverpool in sixth.

Although Chelsea remained 10th after their 3-1 win over Leicester City, Conte said he could not rule out Graham Potter's side as contenders for the final Champions League qualifying spot.

"Liverpool is a competitor in this race. Newcastle is a different Newcastle to the past, they have invested a lot of money and they have a strong team," Conte said. "I don't consider Chelsea outside because Chelsea has a possibility to win the last 11 or 12 games in a row because the squad is really, really strong.

"A top club looks to themselves. We have to be focused on our path and to try to do our best until the end of the season and then we see which is the position we are able to achieve."

Manchester United's stand-in captain Bruno Fernandes must work on controlling his emotions and channelling them in the right way, manager Erik ten Hag said on Friday. Fernandes was heavily-criticised for his performance and antics in the 7-0 humiliation at Anfield where United suffered their biggest defeat against any club in close to 100 years.

The Portuguese impressed against Real Betis in the Europa League on Thursday, however, scoring and assisting in the 4-1 victory as United quickly shrugged off any lingering hangover from the rout at Anfield.

"I think he showed big personality by giving this performance on Thursday, leading the team, so it was brilliant," Ten Hag told reporters ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash against relegation-threatened Southampton. "His emotion is his weapon but sometimes it's too strong and, yes, of course I help him, I support him and I give him feedback. Sometimes he has to show more to control emotions.

"He has to find the balance when to use the right show as a tool and when to use emotion as a tool. That is the next step. It is a nice development point for him and when he does it, he will be an even better player."

Ten Hag also had some positive news about injured midfielder Christian Eriksen, saying he will be back this season. Eriksen suffered an ankle injury in late January and initial estimates said he could be missing until May.

"I think he will play, yeah, definitely," Ten Hag said. "I can't tell now an expectation, but I think his progress in the rehab is okay, is going according to plan. So, we will definitely see him but not before the international break," he said.

United will be anxious to bounce back in the league against 19th-placed Southampton at Old Trafford, although Ten Hag said United will need to 'outstanding' to do that.

"At the bottom it's very close, so they will be front foot, they will be aggressive, they will do everything they can do to collect points here," the Dutchman said. "So, we have to be 100% and give the best performance to beat them."

United may have forward Anthony Martial back from a hip injury at the weekend although Ten Hag will not rush him.

"He is on his way back, he's back in training but we will be cautious, yeah."

Premier League: Bournemouth ends Liverpool's revival, Kane twin goals lift Tottenham

Eddie Howe says further limits on spending would inhibit Newcastle's blueprint for success following a call from Liverpool owner John W Henry for tougher restrictions on clubs. Henry, initially a supporter of the collapsed European Super League, this week voiced his support for extra curbs on Premier League clubs to preserve healthy competition. But Magpies manager Howe, who has spent heavily since taking over at St James' Park in November 2021, said he would not welcome fresh limits on top of existing regulations.

<h3>Howe backs club ambitions</h3>

"I wouldn't want to see any more restrictions on spending," Howe said on Friday.

"We have spent money, don't get me wrong, but future restrictions would certainly deny our ability to improve as quickly as we want to."

Newcastle's sizeable investment since a Saudi-led takeover in 2021 has enabled them to mount a challenge to finish in the top four of the English top flight this season. They are currently sixth in the table, four points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with two games in hand despite a poor recent run. Howe's team also reached last month's League Cup final, which they lost to Manchester United.

Newcastle, who host Wolves on Sunday, have won just one of their past eight league games and scored only three goals in the process.

"There's a belief that we can win again and we need, very quickly, to fulfil that aim," Howe said.

"I've never sat here and talked us up in terms of targets, top four. But I have talked us up in terms of what I believe we can achieve and the quality we have in our group and I'm not going to change now."

<h3>Goals scoring issue for Newcastle</h3>

Newcastle's recent lack of goals has increased the clamour for record-signing Alexander Isak to start in place of England international Callum Wilson, who has scored only once in his past 14 appearances for the club. But Howe issued a note of caution over a player who has missed a significant chunk of the season with a thigh injury.

"He wants to play, like every player. I feel he is there, but is he 100 percent ready to play 90 minutes on a consistent basis? Probably not. I have been delighted by his attitude. I think he's in a good place."
