"The last three or four days went really long, it was not that easy. But at the end I'm here, I'm happy and I can't wait to get started," Szoboszlai said in a statement. "(A) really historic club, really good players, good coach, everything is good. For me it was perfect to make the next step in a club like this. The fans, the stadium, everything is really good."

The Hungarian scored 20 goals and provided 22 assists in 91 games since joining Leipzig in the 2021 winter transfer window. Szoboszlai helped Leipzig win back-to-back German cups, and scored their second goal as they beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 in last season's final in early June.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he had seen Szoboszlai first hand when the midfielder was a teenager at Red Bull Salzburg, adding that he had made great strides since in the Bundesliga while also captaining Hungary at a young age.

"These are proper positives and this is even before we even think about his qualities as a footballer," Klopp said. "I will not say too much about them at this stage except they are definitely the kind which will hopefully bring a lot of enjoyment and also help us to get results.

"There is no pressure, though. Dominik is still a very young player. He has so much development ahead of him and this means it makes sense for us all to be patient and to give him the time and space to allow his talent to come through within our team."

French footballer Benjamin Mendy will return to a UK courtroom Monday for the start of his retrial for two alleged sexual offences, five months after a jury cleared him of multiple other counts. Manchester City player Mendy, 28, will be back in the dock at Chester Crown Court in northwest England to face one count of rape and one of attempted rape.

Jurors in his last trial, which ended in January, failed to reach verdicts on the two charges involving two different women. The panel of seven men and four women had cleared the defender of six other counts of rape and one of sexual assault against four women following a six-month trial. The judge in January had immediately set a new trial date of Monday for the two counts on which the jury did not return a verdict.

Mendy, whose contract with Manchester City expires at the end of this month and is reportedly not set to be renewed, has denied all the charges filed against him.

As the not guilty verdicts were read out in court in January, Mendy covered his face with both hands, gently rocking back and forth.

Jenny Wiltshire, one of his lawyers, said at the time that the footballer was "delighted" that he had been acquitted of most of the charges he faced.

She added at the time that he looked forward to "clearing his name in relation to the other two charges so he can start rebuilding his life".

<h2>- 'Predator' accusations -</h2>

Mendy was accused alongside Louis Saha Matturie, 41, an alleged "fixer", who was found not guilty by the jury of three counts of rape relating to two teenagers.

Jurors also failed to reach verdicts on three counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault against Matturie by five other women.

He faces a separate retrial later this year.

The prosecution had alleged that Mendy was a sexual "predator" who raped or sexually assaulted young women procured by Matturie at parties at his luxury home south of Manchester.

Mendy denied ever forcing any woman into sex and both said any sexual activity they had with women was consensual.

Mendy joined Manchester City from French club Monaco in 2017. He has played 75 times for City, but his playing time was limited by injuries and a loss of form.

He has not played since August 15 2021 -- days before he was hit with an initial charge of four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.&nbsp;

The last of his 10 caps for France came in November 2019, after the defender won the World Cup in 2018.

<h2>Chelsea to fund Pochettino's transfer plans</h2>

As things stand, Chelsea will look to raise money in the transfer window before they look for incomings for new manager Mauricio Pochettino. With two years left on his contract, the club will be aware that this transfer window could see them coup a big transfer fee rather than selling next season or losing him for free in 2025. Havertz has played a key role for Chelsea in recent times and scored the winning goal in the Champions League final in 2021.

The West London club will lose a certain amount on Havertz having acquired his services for $89million in 2020. So far he has made 139 appearances for the West London club and scored 32 times having signed from Bayer Leverkusen. It reported that the deal will be guaranteed $70&nbsp;million which will see certain add-on clauses which Chelsea will receive when certain targets are reached by the player.

Rice recently captained West Ham to their first trophy in 43 years as he helped the side win the UEFA Conference League at the start of the month.

Premier League: Chelsea sign Bundesliga top scorer Christopher Nkunku on six-year deal from RB Leipzig

Chelsea have intensified their search for a new striker this summer. The club officials have already had discussions with Juventus regarding a potential transfer deal for Dusan Vlahovic. Juventus failed to qualify for next season’s Champions League. As a result, many players are understood to have started finding other clubs in order to get in on the Champions League action. A report published by Gazzetta dello Sport has claimed that Chelsea held talks with Juventus director Giovanni Manna regarding Vlahovic’s possible signing. It is being learnt that the Serie A side has been told that they can choose from a list of Chelsea players, plus cash, for Vlahovic as a part of a swap deal. The report also mentions that the Old Lady will be asking for at least €80 million to sell Vlahovic.

<h2>Who are the five players?</h2>

Christian Pulisic, Romelu Lukaku, &nbsp;Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Trevoh Chalobah, and Kalidou Koulibaly are believed to have been offered by Chelsea to Juventus. Lukaku's presence on this list is certainly surprising especially given the fact that the Blues had paid a club-record fee of £97.5 million to sign the Belgian striker from Inter Milan in 2021.

As for Vlahovic, the forward has made 63 appearances so far. The Serbian has till now found the back of the net on 23 occasions. In the latest Serie A season, Vlahovic recorded 10 goals and two assists. German giants Bayern Munich are also reportedly willing to rope in the 23-year-old this summer. In international football, Vlahovic has netted 13 goals in 21 appearances.

<h2>Kai Havertz transfer update</h2>

Apart from the five above-mentioned players, Kai Havertz and Mason Mount are reportedly on the verge of departing Chelsea this summer. According to The Guardian, Arsenal are interested in signing Havertz. The report suggests that the Gunners have emerged as strong contenders to land the German international this summer. Manchester United, on the other hand, tabled an offer worth £40million to acquire the services of Mount. According to The Telegraph, Chelsea rejected Manchester United’s opening offer. Erik ten Hag's side remain confident that the English international will not be signing a new contract with Chelsea. Mount’s contract is set to expire in June 2024.

After suffering a dismal Premier League outing last season, Chelsea will aim to kick off their next campaign with renewed vigour under Mauricio Pochettino. In their last Premier League campaign, Chelsea could manage to secure a 12th-placed finish.

Chelsea prepare swap deal to sign Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic: Report

Liverpool signed Argentine World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton on Thursday for a fee that could rise to a reported £55 million ($69 million).

The 24-year-old is the first piece in a midfield rebuild for Liverpool, who finished a disappointing fifth in the Premier League.

"It feels amazing," said Mac Allister, who is understood to have signed a five-year deal at Anfield. "It's a dream come true. It's amazing to be here and I can't wait to get started.

"I wanted to be in from the first day of pre-season, so it's good that everything is done. I'm looking forward to meeting my teammates.

"It was a fantastic year for me -– World Cup, what we achieved with Brighton -– but now it's time to think about Liverpool and try to be a better player and a better human being every day."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is seeking to bolster his midfield options after the departures of James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The club were priced out of a move for England teenage star Jude Bellingham, who&nbsp;is set to join Real Madrid&nbsp;after the clubs agreed a fee of 103 million euros ($110 million).

Liverpool, who struggled last term after nearly completing an unprecedented quadruple in 2021/22, have been criticised for failing to reinforce their ageing midfield over recent transfer windows.

Klopp is excited about the arrival of Mac Allister, who reportedly cost an initial fee of £35 million.

Mac Allister will wear the number 10 shirt worn with distinction by past Liverpool stars Sadio Mane, John Barnes and Michael Owen.

"We are adding a very talented, very smart, very technically skilled boy to our squad and this is super news, really it is," said the German.

"I do not think the football world needs me to say too much about Alexis's qualities because they are already pretty well known.

Premier League: Liverpool sign Argentine World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister

Ange Postecoglou has come from humble roots and arrived&nbsp;in Australia by boat as a little boy to stand on the brink of one of the Premier League's biggest jobs.

The 57-year-old Australian looks set to be named Tottenham Hotspur boss, having won five trophies in two seasons at Celtic including the Scottish treble this year.

Athens-born Postecoglou may represent a disappointment to Spurs fans demanding a "bigger name", but he knows what success is, having lifted league titles in three different countries.&nbsp;

Championship glory first came with South Melbourne and Brisbane Roar in Australia, then Japan's Yokohama F. Marinos, before defying sceptics to excel in Scotland.

The no-nonsense Postecoglou also had a successful four years as Australia coach that included winning the 2015 Asian Cup.

Former Everton star Tim Cahill played for the Socceroos under Postecoglou and said his "leadership and beliefs are infectious".

"The most important part was the belief he instilled in us to play a style of football that could test any team we came up against," said Cahill.

<h2>Memories of dad</h2>

Postecoglou was born in the Greek capital Athens before the family emigrated to Australia by boat in 1970 when he was five, settling in Melbourne.

His parents wanted to give their son a better life than the one they had.

"There was a never-ending struggle there to establish ourselves," he told Sky Sports last year.

"He (dad) was working day and night, my mum was working, we were at school, we were saving money to buy a house. We shared a house with another family for a number of years."

Postecoglou told The Scotsman newspaper his hard-working father had been hugely influential both in his life and football philosophy.

"The only time I ever got to see any joy in my dad was when we went to the football on a Sunday. So that did make an impression on me because I made a quick connection that football is something that makes him happy," he said.

It was this bond that has driven Postecoglou to produce teams playing the type of attractive and attacking football that his dad enjoyed watching.

"He's not with us now, he passed away a couple of years ago, but he's in my head," he said.&nbsp;

"I know that and every time my team plays, I'll sometimes have an ugly 1-0 win and I know what he's saying, 'Don't celebrate because that was crap.'"

<h2>Japan legacy</h2>

As a player Postecoglou was a defender for South Melbourne in the-then National Soccer League between 1984 and 1993, winning two championship titles, the latter as captain.

He won four caps for Australia before a knee injury prematurely ended his playing career.

South Melbourne gave him his first coaching break in 1996, which he grabbed with both hands to win back-to-back league titles.

As his stature grew, he took over as coach of the Australian U20 team before a year in Greece with Panachaiki, ahead of a return home with Brisbane Roar.

After leading Roar to the A-League title and being named coach of the year, he was poached by Melbourne Victory, then the Socceroos in 2013.&nbsp;

In 2018 he took over at Yokohama F. Marinos in the J-League, where he finished 12th in his first season, and in the next campaign they claimed the title for the first time in 15 years.

Yokohama fans loved the team's swashbuckling attacking style and Postecoglou's commitment and passion.

"People who watch Marinos now know what to expect in terms of our football, know that we won't change our approach, that we believe in something as a football club," he said before leaving for Celtic in 2021.

"I think that was the most important thing for me."

Postecoglou was determined to leave a legacy in Yokohama and his successor, compatriot Kevin Muscat, went on to win the J-League in 2022.

Premier League: Australian Ange Postecoglou set to become Tottenham Hotspur boss

A gang illegally streaming Barclays Premier League football matches at cut-price subscription rates has been jailed in England. The Premier League said that five individuals, all men, were convicted of conspiracy to defraud, money laundering and contempt of court. Through their illegal streaming business, the gang had generated 7 million pounds in five years.

Mark Gould, who is from London, reportedly masterminded the operation. Chesterfield Crown Court on Tuesday (May 31) handed him an 11-year prison sentence.

Gould and co-defendants Peter Jolley, Steven Gordon, Christopher Felvus and William Brown facilitated illegal access to football match streaming from hundreds of channels around the world. They also offered tens of thousands of on-demand films and TV shows.

Zak Smith, a sixth gang member, was not present at the court for sentencing. A warrant has now been issued for his arrest, said the Premier League.

According to the information released by the league, there were 30 employees working at this illegal streaming business. There was also an undercover employee from a specialist anti-piracy company.

William Brown, who is from Stoke-on-Trent, denied having committed these offences and claimed that he was an undercover informant at the illegal operation and was working in the interests of the law.

However, he was convicted by the jury in a unanimous decision. The trial went on for seven-weeks. Premier League reportedly said that Brown used his tech skills to hack accounts of legitimate customers in order to gain access and copy streams. He also intended for the blame to fall on genuine customers if the operation was discovered by authorities.

Sky Sports reported that the prosecution was supported by Hammersmith &amp; Fulham Council's trading standards team and Fact, an intellectual property protection organisation.

"Today's sentencing is the result of a long and complex prosecution of a highly sophisticated operation," said Premier League general counsel Kevin Plumb as quoted by Sky Sports.

"The sentences handed down, which are the longest sentences ever issued for piracy-related crimes, vindicate the efforts made to bring these individuals to justice and reflect the severity and extent of the crimes.

"This prosecution is another concrete example of the clear links between piracy and wider criminality, a warning we repeatedly make.

"While most Premier League fans enjoy watching our games in a safe way, those who were customers of these services were effectively supporting individuals involved in other sinister and dangerous organised crime.

"The Premier League's substantial financial contribution to the entire football pyramid is made possible through the ability to sell our broadcast rights.

"We are pleased that through rulings such as this, the courts continue to show that they recognise the importance of safeguarding the Premier League's rights.

"We will continue to protect our rights and our fans by investigating and prosecuting illegal operators at all levels."

UK: Gang illegally streaming Premier League matches sent to jail

Another thrilling season of the Premier League is over. Manchester City were crowned Champions for the third straight time but there were many other intriguing storylines across the campaign. We dissect the winners and losers of the 22/23 Premier League.

Premier league season round-up

Luton completed a fairytale journey to the Premier League after beating Coventry on penalties in the Championship playoff final at Wembley on Saturday. The Hatters secured a fourth promotion in 10 seasons 6-5 in the shootout after the sides were tied at 1-1 after 120 minutes.

Financial experts estimate promotion to world football's most watched league to be worth around £170 million ($210 million) for a club that have been through turmoil since they last played in the top flight 31 years ago.

Luton are the first club to go from the fifth tier to the top flight in the Premier League era.

Midfielder Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu has been on that whole journey and becomes the first player to go from the National League to Premier League with the same club.

"I feel like I completed football," said Mpanzu. It's been a journey. It's going to be a party all summer."

Some of Luton's cash windfall will go to upgrading the club's stadium, Kenilworth Road, which with a capacity just over 10,000 and set among rows of terraced houses, will be hosting the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool next season.

Luton had to recover from an early shock when captain Tom Lockyer collapsed on the field.

The Welsh centre-back was stretchered off and taken to hospital, where the club confirmed he was responsive and able to talk to his family.

"I feel really good, but the only thing I'm thinking about now is Tom Lockyer," said Luton manager Rob Edwards.

Lockyer had played his part when Luton had the ball in the net after just five minutes when Gabriel Osho was flagged offside as he forced the ball in from close range.

But a bright start from Edwards' men was rewarded on 23 minutes when Elijah Adebayo's good work down the left teed up Jordan Clark to smash home at the near post.

Adebayo had a second Luton goal ruled out before half-time for handball.

Coventry looked like a side that had stage fright in front of 85,000 people in the first-half. But Mark Robins' side have grown used to thriving in adversity.

In their 22 years away from the top flight, Coventry have been forced out of their home city to Northampton and Birmingham due to financial issues in leasing their stadium.

Even when restored to Coventry, they began the season at the foot of the Championship table after being unable to host home games due to the state of their pitch which had been used for rugby at the Commonwealth Games.

Coventry were much improved after the break and got their reward 24 minutes from time when Viktor Gyokeres teed up Gustavo Hamer to fire into the far corner.

The Sky Blues nearly turned the tie around fully within minutes when Matt Godden blazed a big chance over.

Tired legs and tension took over in extra-time, but Coventry had a massive let off four minutes from time.

Joe Taylor slotted home after charging down Jonathan Panzo's clearance, but the goal was ruled out as the ball struck the Luton man's hand.

All of the first 11 penalties were then scored as the takers showed incredible poise under the most extreme pressure.

But when Fankaty Dabo's effort sailed over the bar, Luton's dreams came true.

From playing in fifth tier to qualifying for the Premier League, Luton Town completes fairytale journey

Wolverhampton Wanderers FC defeated Stellenbosch FC in the penalty shootout to emerge victorious in the Premier League Next Generation Cup on Friday, May 26. The summit clash rounded off 1-1 in regulation time with the Wolves notching the first goal in the opening half and Stellenbosch bagging the equaliser in the 46th minute.

<h2>Wolves on a roll</h2>

Wolves were the more enterprising of the two teams in the first half. Their backline took the initiative in commencing attacking moves with the likes of Oliver Tipton putting in a shift on both ends of the pitch. Roy-Keane Avontuur made some impressive runs from the left flank but they were thwarted by the Wolves' defence.

Stellenbosch’s Ethan Felix took a powerful shot from the right side of the 18-yard box in the 12th minute. However, the Premier League team goalkeeper Joe Young saved the same cleanly. The James Collins-coached side gradually grew into the proceedings as Harvey Griffiths earned a corner for them around the half-hour mark with a fantastic left-footed effort from outside the box.

Midfielder Owen Hesketh stepped up to take the corner and his curling kick was well met and nodded into the back of the net by Griffiths to help Wolves garner the first lead in the game. Hesketh played some slick passes to Nathan Fraser and Ty Barnett but Stellenbosch warded them off to continue to remain in the game in the second half.

The defending champions emerged out of the half-time break with some renewed intensity and plans. They began testing Wolves on the flanks by stretching their backline and sending in crosses aplenty into the box.

Stellenbosch derived the requisite result from this strategy as they began seeing much more of the ball and were successful in limiting the Wolves inside their own half. Amidst one such move, Antonio Van Wyk brought down a precise pass from the right flank and shot it brilliantly into the bottom-left corner to seal the equaliser and infuse further excitement into the game.

Wolves managed to breakthrough via a counter-attack later in the half. Justin Hubner raced down the left flank and sent in a near-perfect cross that striker Nathan Fraser headed wide off the woodwork. However, neither of the two sides could secure the winner and the game proceeded into a penalty shootout. Wolves held their nerves and scored from all five of their spot-kicks. But, Van Wyk’s miss from the first shot held the team from South Africa back from winning their second straight Reliance Foundation presents Premier League Next Generation Cup title.

<h2>James Collins full of praise for opposition</h2>

“I thought it was our hardest game, as we expected it to be. Stellenbosch are such a terrific team!” Wolverhampton Wanderers FC coach James Collins exclaimed after the game.

He added, “My defenders were getting frustrated with me because I told them that they have had an easy tournament and I didn’t expect this game to be easy. They rolled their eyes and said that they had done well. They have done well but tonight was different as the Stellenbosch centre-forward (Van Wyk) was excellent. We knew we had to defend well, which we did.”

“I am so proud of these boys. They have come out here and we have played in this beautiful country for two weeks,” Stellenbosch FC coach Evangelos Vellios said.

“Obviously, it would have been great to have the gold medal around our neck again. But, it is also a great learning experience for these boys. Last year, we won the tournament. This year, we lost in the penalties in the finals. It just keeps us hungry to hopefully come back again one day,” he signed off.

We knew we had to defend well, which we did.” “I am so proud of these boys. Next Generation Cup: Wolves beat Stellenbosch in thrilling penalty shootout

Pep Guardiola praised his Manchester City players for shrugging off their hangovers after clinching the Premier League title with a 1-1 draw at Brighton on Wednesday to stretch an unbeaten run to 25 matches. A point was also enough for the Seagulls to guarantee they will finish sixth in the table and secure a place in the Europa League next season.

Phil Foden fired the English champions in front, but Brighton were well worthy of the point given to them by Julio Enciso's stunning long-range strike.

"Only 48 hours before they drank all the alcohol in Manchester," said Guardiola. "Today they showed why they are the champions.&nbsp;

"We were humble and run a lot. That is why we are the champions for many years, these players showed something special."

Guardiola heaped praise on Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi pre-match, hailing the Italian as one of the most influential managers of the last 20 years. The City coach showed his respect by restoring a number of star names to his side that missed Sunday's 1-0 win over Chelsea to toast a fourth league title in five years.

Erling Haaland returned among six changes and could have had a seventh hat-trick of the season inside half an hour. The towering Norwegian headed over Foden's inviting cross on five minutes. Haaland then had a poor touch to blame for not beating Jason Steele when clean through on goal.

At the third time of asking he took no chances as Haaland unselfishly squared with just Steele to beat for Foden to convert his 15th goal of the season.

But after a slow start, Brighton soon began to live up to Guardiola's billing as the champions were rocked back on their heels.

"In every situation, even when the situation was difficult, we didn't lose our style," said De Zerbi.

Danny Welbeck's free-kick came crashing off the bar and Facundo Buonanotte should have done better with his finish after sauntering through the City defence.
Kaoru Mitoma also saw an equaliser ruled out for handball.

But there was no stopping Enciso's leveller when it did come as the Paraguayan picked up Levi Colwill's pass and smashed an effort into the top corner for his first goal at the Amex.

Brighton had the ball in the net for a third time in the first 45 minutes moments later only for Welbeck to be flagged offside from Mitoma's pass.

The second period was less filled with goalmouth action despite the electric pace of the game. Haaland thought he finally had his 53rd goal of the season when he headed home Cole Palmer's cross 15 minutes from time. But a VAR review caught out City's prolific number nine as he had pulled Colwill's shirt to create the space for a free header.

Tempers briefly flared on the touchline after that decision with Guardiola shown a yellow card by the referee.

There were also minor injury concerns for City ahead of the FA Cup and Champions League finals next month as Phil Foden, John Stones and Bernardo Silva were not moving freely as they were replaced in the second half.

"We have to be careful for the players to arrive to the finals as best as possible," added Guardiola.

But it was all smiles at the end as Guardiola and De Zerbi shared a warm embrace of mutual admiration after the full-time whistle.

Football - List of teams with most Premier League Titles

The Premier League academies have been a rich source of talent in recent years as the latest sensation Jamal Baptiste joins the ranks. Baptiste, a product of West Ham United academy has been in sparkling form in the ongoing U-21 Premier League Next Generation Cup. Representing the Hammers, Baptiste, 19, is tipped to be the next big thing in English football and dimmed as the next Jadon Sancho and Phil Foden.

<h2>Big career ahead</h2>

Tipped to scale incredible peaks in his career, the defender penned his first professional contract with West Ham United FC when he was 17.

Last season, he became their second youngest representative at the U23 level in addition to turning up for the England national team in the U18 age group as well. Many at West Ham compared him to fellow academy graduate Declan Rice, who has progressed to see roaring success both at the club and the international level in the last few years.

Baptiste is part of the West Ham squad that is touring India for the Premier League Next Generation Cup. The Hammers finished second in Group A behind Stellenbosch FC after winning one and drawing twice in their three group stage fixtures. Having played for the senior team in the FA Cup and being a part of the bench for the UEFA Europa Conference League, Baptiste is one of the senior members of the visiting contingent. He is looking to impart his learning from previous experiences into the current group of budding youngsters from the West Ham squad.

<h2>Baptiste speaks on experience in India</h2>

“I am finding it quite well. It’s obviously a different challenge that I have been able to come across. Most teams that I played in the last couple of years, I was the younger player. But, obviously, looking at the older players back there and seeing how they added themselves in a big group with younger players, it’s been done quite well and it’s a good experience. You can tell them (younger players) what they are doing right and doing wrong,” Baptiste said.

West Ham played ATK Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC in their first two games in the competition. They were held to a 1-1 draw against the Mariners but they followed it up by putting four past the Blues and keeping a clean sheet to notch an impressive victory in the second match. Baptiste has rubbed shoulders with some of the most stellar talents in English football but he believes that some key footballing philosophies remain constant across Premier League and Indian clubs.

“I think the mentality obviously of getting off and keeping the ball is quite the same (between Indian and English teams). I think they know when to press and when not to press. I think playing different teams that we probably will never face during the season and experiences of playing different types of teams have been very great,” the defender mentioned.

Baptiste acknowledges that he has had a great time in India, having enjoyed different facets of the country along with the numerous non-footballing activities that the teams have participated in since touching down here.

“I really like it and I would want to come again to India. It’s something that I have never come across in my life before. All the cultural stuff that we have done, meeting new people, it has been lovely,” Baptiste signed off.

Style of play of Indian teams is similar to English clubs – West Ham United star Jamal Baptiste

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he wants more than 100 Premier League charges levelled against the club for alleged financial irregularities to be dealt with "as soon as possible".

City, who are celebrating their third consecutive English top-flight title, were referred to an independent commission in February over 115 alleged rule breaches between 2009 and 2018.

The Premier League also accused the club of not cooperating since an investigation started in December 2018.

The scale of the charges, which the club strongly deny, and the magnitude of the implications if found guilty, suggest the case could drag on.

Guardiola, whose side are chasing a trophy treble this season, does not want a cloud hanging over their achievements and wants a resolution as soon as possible.

But the Catalan, who has a contract until 2025, stressed he would not walk away from the club while the charges remain unresolved.

"What I would like is if the Premier League and judges could make something as soon as possible, then if we have done something wrong everybody will know it," he said on the eve of Wednesday's match against Brighton.

"And if we are like we believe as a club for many years, in the right way, then the people will stop talking about that.

"We would love it tomorrow, this afternoon better than tomorrow.

The sanction was overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport later that year but CAS ruled that City had obstructed investigations and the club were fined 10 million euros.

Pep Guardiola wants Premier League charges dealt with 'as soon as possible' for Manchester City

Manchester City celebrated their third consecutive Premier League title on Sunday as a much-changed side was still good enough to beat Chelsea 1-0 at the Etihad. Pep Guardiola's men clinched a fifth title in six seasons on Saturday when second-placed Arsenal were beaten 1-0 at Nottingham Forest.

That gave Guardiola the luxury of resting most of his star names with one eye on the FA Cup and Champions League finals next month as City go for the treble. The strength of City's squad was exemplified by Julian Alvarez, who has spent most of the season as Erling Haaland's understudy, scoring his 17th goal of the campaign to extend the English champions' unbeaten run in all competitions to 24 games.

But a festive afternoon for City was marred at full-time as thousands of fans spilled onto the pitch despite pleas from the club to remain in the stands. Guardiola made nine changes in all from the side that thrashed Real Madrid 4-0 in midweek.

The youthful hosts were still too sharp for the beleaguered visitors early on and took the lead on 12 minutes. Alvarez continued his stunning season for club and country as the Argentine World Cup winner swept home Cole Palmer's pass. Palmer made the most of a rare Premier League start and was unlucky not to double City's lead when his goalbound effort was cleared off the line by Trevoh Chalobah.

Defeat confirmed that Chelsea will end a miserable campaign in the bottom half and a familiar lack of cutting edge in front of goal showed why the Blues have struggled under three different managers this season. Raheem Sterling should have marked his return to the Etihad with at least one goal but was denied by a fine save by Stefan Ortega when one-on-one with the German goalkeeper.

Moments later Conor Gallagher headed onto the post with just Ortega to beat. But the lack of jeopardy for both sides shone through as the majority of the game was played out at a snail's pace under the unusually baking Manchester sun.

Not that the home fans minded as they serenaded their side with cries of "championees" and bounced around doing the Poznan celebration with their backs to the pitch.

Chelsea had the better chances in the second-half to at least avoid a seventh defeat in nine games under caretaker boss Frank Lampard. Even when the stand-in City goalkeeper Ortega was finally beaten by Sterling, John Stones was on hand to clear off the line.

Mykhailo Mudryk and Cesar Azpilicueta also wasted late chances to grab a point.

At the other end, Kalvin Phillips was inches away from his first City goal as the England midfielder's header came back off the inside of the post.

Alvarez had a second goal ruled out for handball by Riyad Mahrez 20 minutes from time before Guardiola gave the home crowd what they wanted by unleashing Haaland from the bench.

The Norwegian went for goal with his first touch and nearly teed up Rico Lewis with a shot across goal.

But he was made to wait for his 53 goal of the season as City serenely played out the final stages to open up a seven-point lead at the top of the table with two games remaining to Arsenal's one.

Manchester City celebrate third successive Premier League title triumph with 1-0 win over Chelsea

Manchester United and Newcastle are on the brink of qualifying for next season's Champions League after Liverpool's 1-1 draw against Aston Villa, while Everton remain in relegation danger despite their dramatic 1-1 draw at Wolves on Saturday. United's 1-0 victory at Bournemouth, combined with Liverpool's failure to beat Villa, left Erik ten Hag's men and Newcastle within touching distance of ensuring Premier League top four finishes.

<h2>Man Utd, Newcastle on top four brink</h2>

Fourth-placed United and Newcastle, in third, are both three points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool, who have only one game left. Newcastle can seal their spot with a draw or win against Leicester on Monday or Chelsea on May 28. United take their turn at securing the lucrative top four place against Chelsea on Thursday and Fulham next weekend.

Liverpool's final game of the season is against relegated Southampton, but although they have a superior goal difference to United if they finish level on points, they are likely to have to settle for a place in the Europa League. At the Vitality Stadium, United took the lead in the ninth minute when Casemiro spun to meet Christian Eriksen's cross with an acrobatic bicycle kick from close-range.

United were unbeaten in their previous 134 league matches when leading at half-time and that remarkable sequence continued as they held firm after the interval. At Anfield, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was watching from the stands as he served a touchline ban following his recent rant about referee Paul Tierney. Villa wasted a 22nd-minute penalty when Ollie Watkins fired wide after the striker was brought down by Ibrahima Konate. Despite Watkins' miss, Unai Emery's team went ahead in the 27th minute through Jacob Ramsey's volley from Douglas Luiz's cross.

Roberto Firmino and James Milner, set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, came on for their Anfield farewells in the closing stages. And it was Brazilian forward Firmino who rescued a point with his close-range finish in stoppage-time.

<h2>Everton drama</h2>

Yerry Mina's last-gasp equaliser boosted Everton's hopes of avoiding playing in the second tier for the first time since 1954.

Sean Dyche's men fell behind after 34 minutes when Adama Traore's shot was pushed out to Hwang Hee-chan, who netted from close-range.

Mina bundled in Everton's leveller nine minutes into stoppage-time to leave the fourth bottom Toffees two points above the relegation zone.

Third bottom Leeds would go above Everton with a win at West Ham on Sunday, while second bottom Leicester would also leapfrog Dyche's team if they beat Newcastle on Monday.

Premier League: Man Utd, Newcastle on brink of sealing top four places after Liverpool draw

Arsenal were worthy contenders in the title race but Manchester City upped their game when it mattered most to win their fifth Premier League trophy in six years, defender Kyle Walker said. Arsenal's eight-point lead at the top evaporated in the last two months amid a wretched run of form and Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest gave City an unassailable lead as they won the title with three games to spare after an incredible run.

Since Pep Guardiola's City lost 1-0 away at Tottenham Hotspur at the start of February, they won 13 of their 14 games and did not lose enroute to the title.

"Arsenal pushed us right to the limit, they've been fantastic, so all credit to them. We just went on an incredible run, they had a few hiccups, we capitalised on it and we've managed to end up where we have," Walker told City's website. "It's the players we've got. We're a bunch of lads who have achieved so much over the last number of years and we understand the standards we've set.

"As for inspiration, there's the captains, managers and so on but we drive ourselves. We achieved so much over the past five or six years, but we knew the bar wasn't high enough at the start of the season."\

City also had the psychological edge in the title race after they beat Arsenal twice in that run, scoring four in the second game -- a blow Arsenal briefly recovered from before they withered under pressure.

"We wanted to prove anyone doubting us wrong - it wasn't good enough," Walker added. "It was the first season where we kept on scoring late goals so until the end, we know we can do it.

"The standards of Premier League have gone up, but this is what this club is built for. Certainly that's how it's been for the six years I've been here, so fair play to everyone involved."

Premier League: Arsenal’s defeat to Nottingham Forest hands Man City third consecutive title

Manchester United defender Phil Jones is all set to part ways with the club after confirming his departure on Friday, May 19. Jones was signed in 2011 by then-legendary United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and will leave the helm of the 20-time English champions after 12 years. The former Blackburn man won the Premier League title with United in 2013 and along with David de Gea was the club's longest-serving player.

"It's not a time to be sad. It's a time to look back, for me and my family, and be happy that I managed to live a dream at United.

"I can always say to my family and friends that not many people get to play for this club, to always be in its history and to be able to look back with such happy memories," the 31-year-old wrote.

The veteran star has been capped 27 times by England and has not featured for the club for over a year. Interestingly since the start of the 2019-2- season, he has played only 13 matches for the club and looked surplus to requirements under the management of Erik ten Hag.

"I wish I could have played more. I wish I could have given more to the many squads I played alongside," he said.

"I will say, from the bottom of my heart, I did everything I could. I've said before that I found it hard to even speak to my teammates because I was hurt that I couldn't help them.

"Sometimes, in life, things happen that we don't like, but we have to learn to accept it and be at peace in our minds that we did everything we could to overcome the challenges," the statement further read.

In 2011 then United manager Sir Alex suggested Jones would be the ideal replacement for aging Rio Ferdinand and was signed alongside Chris Smalling. David de Gea, another summer signing that year is still part of the roster but has enjoyed a more successful stint at the club.

While Jones could add another title to his cabinet with the FA Cup on June 3, however, he will have to make an appearance at Wembley Stadium to be eligible for it. As things stand, he has won the Premier League in 2013, Europa League, and League Cup in 2017 but was not eligible for the winner's medal in United's recent EFL Cup success, having not made an appearance in the competition.&nbsp;

Jones is yet to make a decision on his next club and could feature in the United's final home game against Fulham on May 28.&nbsp;

Premier League: Phil Jones to part ways with Manchester United, set to end 12-year association with club

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been given a two-match touchline ban after questioning the integrity of referee Paul Tierney following the Reds' win over Tottenham Hotspur in April. Klopp landed himself in trouble with the authorities after blasting Tierney following the explosive end to Liverpool's 4-3 win at Anfield.

<h2>What happened vs Spurs?</h2>

The German celebrated Diogo Jota's stoppage-time winner, which came after Liverpool had blown a three-goal lead, by charging down the touchline to celebrate wildly in front of fourth official John Brooks.

Klopp was booked but later claimed what Tierney said to him was "not OK", claiming he did not know what the official "has against us".

The Football Association -- which also fined Klopp £75,000 ($93,000, 86,000 euros) -- said Thursday the first game of the ban would be served immediately, with Liverpool facing Aston Villa on Saturday, while the second would be suspended pending the manager's future conduct.&nbsp;

<h2>What FA statement read?</h2>

An FA statement added Klopp had admitted his comments regarding Tierney in post-match media interviews "constitute improper conduct as they imply bias, question the integrity of the referee, are personal, offensive, and bring the game into disrepute".

Klopp told reporters after the game: "How they can give a foul on Mohamed Salah (just before Spurs' third goal)? We have our history with Tierney. I really don’t know what he has against us.

"He has said there is no problems but that cannot be true. How he looks at me, I don’t understand it. My celebration was unnecessary, which is fair, but what he said to me when he gave me the yellow card is not OK."

Premier League: Jurgen Klopp given two-match touchline ban for referee rant

Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been banned from all football-related activity for eight months over breaches of betting rules.

Toney, who was charged by the Football Association in November with 262 alleged breaches over a four-year period, has been suspended with "immediate effect".

The 27-year-old England international is banned until mid-January and has been fined £50,000 ($62,000) after he admitted to 232 of the breaches.

"Ivan Toney has been suspended from all football and football-related activity with immediate effect for eight months, which runs up to and including 16 January 2024, fined £50,000 and warned as to his future conduct for breaches of The FA's betting rules," an FA statement said on Wednesday.

"The Brentford FC forward was charged with 262 breaches of FA Rule E8 in total between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021. The FA subsequently withdrew 30 of these breaches and he admitted to the remaining 232."

An independent regulatory commission imposed the sanctions on Toney, who will not be allowed to train with his Brentford team-mates until September 17.

Toney will miss Brentford's last two fixtures this term at Tottenham on Saturday and against Manchester City on the final day of the campaign.

Toney, capped once by England, against Ukraine in March, has scored 21 goals in 35 appearances for Brentford this season.

Although he featured in an England squad before last year's World Cup, Toney was left out of Gareth Southgate's squad for the tournament in Qatar.

His absence will be a huge blow for the team after his goals played a key role in their rise to ninth place in the Premier League heading into the last two games of the season.

Brentford will wait for the &nbsp;publication of the written reasons for Toney's ban because taking their "next steps".

"Brentford FC notes the decision of an independent Regulatory Commission to issue an eight-month ban from all football and football-related activity to Ivan Toney with immediate effect," a statement said.

"Brentford FC is currently awaiting the publication of the written reasons of the independent Regulatory Commission. We will review them before considering our next steps."

Toney is not the first high-profile player to be banned for offences related to betting.

England defender Kieran Trippier, now with Newcastle, was banned for 10 weeks and fined £70,000 by the FA in 2020 after giving out information for others to bet on his transfer from Tottenham to Atletico Madrid.&nbsp;

In 2017, Joey Barton was banned for 18 months, reduced to 13 on appeal, while playing for Burnley after admitting placing 1,260 football-related bets over a 10-year period.

English club coaches that are set to participate in the upcoming Reliance Foundation presents Premier League Next Generation Cup collectively encouraged Indian players to embrace the challenges they will face in the tournament starting May 17, 2023. The visiting squads of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, West Ham United FC and Everton went through their first training sessions since landing in India on Tuesday (May 16).

“Embrace the opportunity. It’s a fantastic event. It’s a great opportunity for them to test themselves against some of the best teams in England. Wolves and West Ham alongside us – three really prestigious academies back in the United Kingdom (UK),” Everton coach Kieran Driscoll conveyed his message to the four Indian clubs that have qualified for the tournament.

West Ham United coach Lauris Coggin asked the Indian players to keep their calm and be in the moment. He suggested them to put in a cohesive and collective effort in addition to taking their time early on in the game to assess the opposition and conditions that they come across.

“Take your time. First five minutes, understand what the opponent is going to offer, the pitch, the weather, the platform. Take as much information as you can in the initial moments; help each other in the difficult moments and try to slow the game down,” Coggin quipped.

Many Indian players harbour hopes of playing abroad, particularly in the Europe, as they rise through the ranks here. ATK Mohun Bagan’s star forward, Kiyan Nassiri, seconded this notion during one of his interactions with the media.

“Of course, 100 per cent, I see myself playing abroad. Everyone wants to play first for the national team and then possibly go to play (for an international club),” Nassiri had mentioned.

Wolves coach James Collins agrees with the same. He believes that it is extremely difficult for clubs across the world to get a hang of their counterparts at the junior level unless they play against them in some competition. The Reliance Foundation presents Premier League Next Generation Cup, he believes, will enable the Indian players get a first-hand experience of the standards they need to uphold to secure lucrative opportunities of playing in Europe.

“I think what it does for the Indian players is it gives them an idea of the standard (of football in Europe). It’s very difficult to know what a U-18, U-19 or an U-20 player looks like in England, if you have not played against them or seen them. It’s very similar in India. We don’t know until we play against them. I think one should know what you are competing with as it gives you a fighting chance of getting yourself to the standard required,” Collins claimed.

“If you don’t know, it’s more difficult. So, hopefully competitions like these will give the next generation of Indian talent a good idea of where they stand in order of getting there and hopefully one or two of them will,” Collins signed off.

The tournament kicks off on Wednesday, May 17 at the Reliance Corporate Park (RCP) in Mumbai with Wolves and Everton taking on each other and West Ham United locking horns with RFDL third-place occupants ATK Mohun Bagan.

Mauricio Pochettino set to join Chelsea as new manager after agreeing terms: Reports

Southampton were relegated from the Premier League after being beaten 2-0 at home by Fulham on Saturday, bringing an end to their 11-year spell in the English top flight.

The defeat means Southampton, who needed a win to stave off relegation, can no longer reel in 17th-placed Everton. Ruben Selles's side are bottom of the league on 24 points from 36 games, while Fulham's win moves them up to ninth.

In a scrappy and disjointed opening 45 minutes, neither side were able to take control of the game, with Fulham having more possession and slightly better attempts but no luck in front of goal.

Both teams tried to play with more attacking intent in the second half, as Carlos Alcaraz had a goal disallowed before Carlos Vinicius latched on to a loose ball in Southampton's box and tapped home the opener for Fulham in the 48th minute.

Substitute Aleksandar Mitrovic then marked his return from an eight-match ban with a goal, sealing the win for Fulham at St Mary's Stadium with a stooping header in the 72nd minute.

Southampton had the lion's share of possession in the closing spell but were unable to create anything of note and prevent a return to the second-tier Championship, with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, a Southampton native, watching on from the stands.

With the Saints' relegation from the top flight, two more teams will go down as the race for the drop heats up. As things stand, Leicester City and Leeds United occupy the relegation zone while Nottingham Forrest and Everton are still handing out to save their Premier League status. The likes of Bournemouth and West Ham United can technically still get relegated but will need a point and a win respectively in their remaining matches.

If Leicester fail to win on Monday Bournemouth will be safe while a win for West Ham will see them play PL football for next season with a potential UEFA Conference League final also on the agenda.

Premier League: Southampton suffer relegation after 2-0 loss to Fulham, ends 11-year spell in top flight

Rasmus Kristensen kept Leeds in contention to avoid relegation as his late leveller secured a dramatic 2-2 draw that dented Newcastle's bid to finish in the top four on Saturday.

Kristensen struck with 11 minutes left at Elland Road as Leeds hit back after conceding a pair of Callum Wilson penalties.

Leeds captain Luke Ayling had opened the scoring in a pulsating encounter with connotations at both ends of the table.

Patrick Bamford missed a spot-kick that would have put Leeds two goals ahead before Wilson's penalties for Newcastle.

After Kristensen's equaliser, Leeds had defender Junior Firpo sent off for a second booking in second half stoppage-time.

Leeds moved up one place to 18th and now sit one point from safety, having played a game more than fourth bottom Everton, who host Manchester City on Sunday.

Sam Allardyce's side travel to West Ham next weekend before hosting Tottenham in their final game of the season.

Leeds, without a win in seven games, face another nerve-wracking fight for survival after avoiding relegation on the final day of last season.

For Newcastle, their attempt to qualify for the Champions League via a top four finish is also set to go down to the wire.

Eddie Howe's men remain third but they are only three points above fourth placed Manchester United and four ahead of fifth placed Liverpool.

The Magpies need six points from their last three games against Brighton, Leicester and Chelsea to be sure of a top four finish.

Beaten 2-1 at Manchester City in Allarydce's first game last weekend, Leeds were playing at home for the first time under the former England boss.

Allardyce's eight-month reign as Newcastle clearly left few fond memories with the Magpies fans who loudly jeered him before kick-off.

Even the reception from Leeds supporters for their new manager was polite as opposed to rapturous in an indication they viewed his appointment as a panic move after the sacking of Javi Gracia.

But the mood in the stands changed from unconvinced to jubilant when Leeds made the perfect start after seven minutes.

<h2>Leeds refuse to surrender</h2>

Rodrigo met Bamford's cross with a header that Nick Pope could only push out to Ayling, who took advantage of Newcastle's sloppy marking to slot home from close-range.

Leeds squandered a golden opportunity to extend their lead in the 28th minute.

Firpo burst into the penalty area and Joelinton responded with a despairing challenge that sent the Leeds defender sprawling.

However, Bamford's penalty was far too close to Pope and the dived to his right to save the spot-kick.

Allardyce held his head in his hands in disbelief, and there was more angst to come for the Leeds boss when Newcastle won a penalty of their own three minute later.

Bruno Guimaraes' pass picked out Alexander Isak and he was upended by Max Wober's rash tackle, conceding a spot-kick that Wilson smashed past Joel Robles.

Firpo was lucky to avoid a red card for a studs-up foul on Guimaraes, but that escape came back to haunt Leeds in the 69th minute when the defender conceded a penalty.

Jumping to challenge Isak, Firpo's out-stretched hand made contact with the ball after a slight push from the Newcastle forward.

The spot-kick was awarded after a VAR check and Wilson drilled his strike high into the roof of the net.

It was Wilson's 10th goal in his last nine appearances.

To their credit, Leeds refused to surrender and they snatched an equaliser in the 79th minute when Kristensen's shot beat Pope via a hefty deflection off Kieran Trippier.

Firpo was dismissed for barging over Anthony Gordon but Leeds held on.

Premier League: Kristensen's late goal in Newcastle draw keeps survival hopes alive for Leeds

Manchester City star Erling Haaland has landed the Football Writers' Association Men's Footballer of the Year for 2022/23 after a stellar start to his Premier League career. Haaland, who is currently leading the PL charts for most goals scored, has bagged a tally of 35 and still has four matches to go in the season. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Sam Kerr, for the second consecutive year, has landed the FWA Women's Footballer of the Year after yet another stellar season.

<h2>Haaland’s sensational 2022-23</h2>

Having signed from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, Haaland has taken the league by storm and looks set to win the Golden Boot with record number of goals. Recently he broke Alan Shearer and Andy Cole’s long-standing record for most goals in a season, having scored his 35th. The Norway international is a clear difference-maker in City’s season where they have also reached the final of the FA Cup.

<h2>Haaland’s impact in Champions League</h2>

While City have won the Premier League in tandem with four titles in five seasons, manager Pep Guardiola’s target is the Champions League. City have reached a third straight semifinal in the competition and are looking to win the prize asset for the first time. Haaland has made his presence felt in the competition with Real Madrid standing in their way for a final.

So far in the season, the 22-year-old has scored 51 goals in the season with 12 in the Champions League, three in FA Cup and one in League Cup. His numbers have helped City mount a challenge for an unprecedented treble at the end of the season.

<h2>Chelsea’s Kerr bags Women’s award</h2>

Chelsea’s Sam Kerr has bagged the Women’s FWA Player of the Season for 2022/23 after another great year. She won her second prize in as many years with an excellent return of 10 goals in 18 games in the WSL. She has so far scored 26 goals in 34 club matches in all competitions and earlier scored her 50th goal on English soil.

Erling Haaland lands Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year; Sam Kerr wins Women's award

Manchester United and Newcastle United both fell to defeats over the weekend, which has once again opened up the top-four race in the Premier League. Liverpool have won their last six league games and are ready to pounce on any slip-up from the Red Devils. Is the top-four race in the Premier League back on?

Arsenal showed no sign of raising the white flag in the Premier League title race with a 2-0 victory at Newcastle United on Sunday to close the gap on leaders Manchester City to one point. Defeat would have left Arsenal's hopes of a first title since 2004 hanging by a thread but Martin Odegaard's brilliant strike and a Fabian Schar own goal sealed a vital victory.

Newcastle, bidding to cement third place and take a big step towards a top-four finish, dominated early on but Odegaard's sweet strike after 14 minutes gave the visitors the lead. Schar then inadvertently turned in Gabriel Martinelli's cross with 20 minutes remaining.

City, who have won 10 straight games to catch and then overhaul Arsenal, have 82 points from 34 games with the Gunners on 81 having played a game more.

Newcastle stay third on 65 but Manchester United could overtake them later on Sunday if they win at West Ham United.

If ever there was a test of the resolve of Mikel Arteta's Arsenal team it was a trip to St James's Park to face a Newcastle side on a roll in their quest to return to the Champions League after an absence of two decades.

They were fortunate to survive an early onslaught with Newcastle's Jacob Murphy thumping a second-minute shot against the foot of the post and Alexander Isak forcing Aaron Ramsdale into an early save.

Newcastle were then awarded a penalty after Bruno Guimaraes was blocked by Jakub Kiwior and referee Chris Kavanagh pointed to the spot for apparent handball, but after a VAR check the decision was overturned to the relief of the visitors.

Arsenal then took the lead with their first shot as Odegaard was allowed too much time and sent a skidding effort inside the post from outside the penalty area.

The visitors were devastatingly effective on the counter-attack and Odegaard was at the heart of all their best work, releasing Martinelli who forced Nick Pope into a smart save.

Pope came to Newcastle's rescue again in stoppage time at the end of a frenetic first half, keeping out Odegaard's shot.

The second half began in almost identical fashion to the first with Murphy's cross being headed against the post by Isak and Ramsdale somehow keeping out Schar's close-range header.

Martinelli then curled a shot against the crossbar and in the 71st minute carried the ball down the left before accelerating to the byline and fizzing in a low cross that deflected off the unfortunate Schar into the net.

PL: Arsenal overcome Newcastle challenge with a 2-0 win, stay alive in title race

Manchester City closed in on retaining the Premier League title as a 2-1 win over struggling Leeds on Saturday opened up a four-point lead at the top of the table.

Ilkay Gundogan struck twice before half-time and missed a penalty as City made it 14 consecutive wins at the Etihad in 2023.

But the home side were made to suffer a far more nervy finale than necessary after Rodrigo pulled a goal back five minutes from time.

Pep Guardiola was far from happy after Erling Haaland gave Gundogan the chance to seal his hat-trick from the spot rather than taking responsibility six minutes from time.

That rounded off a rare poor day for Haaland, who missed a number of chances to add to his 51 goals in all competitions this season.

City's far superior goal difference over Arsenal means Guardiola's men likely need a maximum of eight points from their last four games to claim a fifth league title in six seasons.

Sam Allardyce's return to the dugout had no immediate impact in reviving Leeds' fortunes as they remain outside the relegation zone only on goal difference.

Allardyce made the remarkable claim in midweek that he was "as good" as Guardiola after being appointed for the final four games of the season.

But the former England boss was quickly teased with chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning" as the visitors failed to offer any resistance to wave upon wave of City attack early on.

After the English national anthem was played just prior to kick-off to mark the coronation of King Charles III, the game quickly turned into a procession.

Guardiola could even afford the luxury of making seven changes with one eye on Tuesday's trip to Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals.

Gundogan was one of those brought back into the side as John Stones, Ruben Dias, Rodri, Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva were among those handed a rest.

Leeds were lucky to last until 19 minutes without conceding as Haaland fired his first big chance into the chest of goalkeeper Joel Robles, who was brought in by Allardyce to replace Illan Meslier.

Gundogan showed the star striker how it is done as twice the German midfielder received passes from Riyad Mahrez and picked out the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Kevin De Bruyne's return from injury was another timely boost for City's quest for a treble of trophies and the Belgian's brilliant lay-off should have been buried by Haaland, who fired wide.

Haaland set a new Premier League record of 35 goals in a single season against West Ham on Wednesday.

And the 22-year-old will think he should have had a seventh hat-trick of his first season in English football let alone walk away empty-handed.

Haaland powered a header too close to Robles and then fired against the post with just the goalkeeper to beat.

City were able to take their foot off the gas in the second half in seemingly perfect preparation for their revenge mission in Madrid.

But the mood changed drastically in 60 seconds as Gundogan's penalty hit the post after Phil Foden was upended.

Guardiola was seen bellowing at Haaland "you have to take it" even before Rodrigo then pounced on an error by Manuel Akanji.

Gundogan was given a frosty reception by his manager when he was replaced in stoppage time, but City comfortably saw the game out to extend their lead at the top of the table.

Premier League: Man City spoil Sam Allardyce's return to edge closer to title

Tottenham's veteran goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has been ruled out of the season after being forced off at half-time in Tottenham's defeat at Newcastle United last month with a muscle problem.

Tottenham's interim manager Ryan Mason confirmed that the French national won't feature in Tottenham's upcoming games after missing their last two games. Acting Head Coach Ryan told SPURSPLAY on Friday: "Both sustained big injuries, Hugo's one got confirmed so he's out for the rest of the season unfortunately and then Ryan as well - we've got a couple of others who hopefully aren't too far away from being back and helping the group but that's just a day-to-day one and we'll assess them each day."

Ryan depicted his dissapointment as during the crucial stage he not only lost his first-choice goalkeeper but he also ended up losing their first-choice left-back Ryan Sessegnon.

"Hugo is out for the season, we had the results back and it's obviously disappointing. We kind of feared that initially, we did some more tests and he won't play again for us this season. Ryan had a significant injury, he's been out for a long time, and Ryan won't feature for the rest of the season."

Mason's worries could have further been increased as Oliver Skipp also suffered a head injury but he deemed it as not so serious and he will be in contention to play against Crystal Palace.

"He's in contention. I think he's a very lucky boy, he needed close to 10 stitches, a couple of big gashes on his head, but ultimately it was nothing too serious. It could have been - it was very close to being a serious injury - but thankfully for us it wasn't," Mason added.
