Police have launched an investigation into an altercation surrounding Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles after he was attacked by a group of thugs in the early hours of Sunday, August 27 morning. The incident took place in the Newcastle city centre where a group of six to eight people attacked Lascelles, his brother, and a friend who were at a nightclub. The club is yet to comment on the incident with footage going viral on social media sites.

<h2>Police launch investigation</h2>

“Shortly after 4 am on Sunday, August 20, we received a report of disorder involving a number of people on Westgate Road, in Newcastle city centre.

"Officers attended, however, it is believed that those involved had already left the scene before they arrived. Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information should use the 'Tell Us Something' page of our website or call 101, quoting NP-20230820-0227."

The Northumbria Police are investigating the matter regarding public disorder caused by the incident. The club is yet to make any statement on the incident that happened after Newcastle’s heart-breaking 1-2 defeat against Liverpool in the Premier League.

<h2>Lascelles’ injury-laden season</h2>

The 29-year-old is yet to make an appearance this season for the Magpies as they lost to Manchester City and Liverpool at the start of the season. They started their season with a 5-1 win over Aston Villa at home, but have failed to impress. Lascelles only made seven appearances last season as the club finished in the top four for the first time in 20 years and qualified for the Champions League.&nbsp;

In 159 appearances for the club, he has scored nine goals but is now playing second fiddle to Sven Botman and Fabian Schar for a place in the Playing XI. Despite the club’s glittering days, he has been sidelined with injuries and has been used sparingly.

The club has also gone through a heartbreaking period after they lost to Liverpool despite a dominating performance. Newcastle had a 1-0 lead at the break against a 10-man&nbsp;Liverpool after Virgil Van Dijk was sent off for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity against Alexander Isak. However, super-sub Darwin Nunez scored twice in the dying moments to clinch a memorable 2-1 win for Jurgen Klopp’s men.&nbsp;

Premier League: Manchester United rally to beat Forest 3-2, Arsenal held by 10-man Fulham

Manchester City extended their perfect start to the Premier League season as Rodri sealed a dramatic 2-1 win against Sheffield United after Erling Haaland scored once and missed a penalty for the champions on Sunday. Haaland drove a first half spot-kick against the post before his header put City in front after the break at Bramall Lane.

City were in danger of squandering the points when Jayden Bogle equalised against the run of play with just five minutes left. But Rodri saved City with a blistering strike three minutes later as Pep Guardiola's side moved to the top of the table after a third successive victory.

City's latest success was achieved without Guardiola, who was watching on television while he recuperates after back surgery in Barcelona.

The City boss was in constant contact with his assistant Juanma Lillo, who took the reins at Bramall Lane and will also be in charge for the champions' clash with Fulham on Saturday.

Guardiola's rehabilitation will have been aided by the knowledge that City can thrive in his absence.

Although he achieved it from afar, it was a landmark victory for Guardiola, who now has 200 league wins with City in just 269 games, beating the previous Premier League record of 326 matches to reach that milestone set by Jose Mourinho in 2020.

For the first time since 2016, City have opened a season with three consecutive league wins in an ominous statement to their title rivals that last season's treble triumph has not sated their appetite for success.

City should have gone ahead in the 36th minute when Julian Alvarez's cross was blocked by John Egan's out-stretched arm.

But Haaland hammered his penalty against the post. The Norwegian stood with a look of disbelief etched on his face as the ball rebounded to safety.

It was Haaland's first penalty miss in the Premier League after scoring his previous seven.

When Haaland steered another good chance wide from Kyle Walker's cross, it looked like a day to forget for the striker.

PL: Manchester City continue dream run this season with close 2-1 win over Sheffield United

The Premier League 2023-24 season has officially got underway in the second week of August as top English clubs have started their pursuit of silverware. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal after splashing the cash in the transfer market will be hoping to end the team’s 19-year drought while Manchester United and Liverpool will look to bring the title home yet again. However, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City remain the team to beat as they walk into the season as favourites to clinch the Premier League title for a record fourth consecutive season.

An unparalleled team composition led by Guardiola’s intelligence, backed by Sheikh Mansour’s capital investment and fans' trust, Manchester City have been one of the best football teams on the planet for the last couple of years. City’s dominance was underlined by their recent capture of the 15th trophy under Guardiola, the UEFA Super Cup win against Spanish giants Sevilla. The team has been blessed with an outrageous combination of world-class players, depth of squad, and the will to win.

<h2>Depth in the squad</h2>

While luck could be a major factor in winning a cup competition like the FA Cup and League Cup, the Premier League amounts to consistency and depth in the squad for 38 match weeks. The current European champions have the ideal replacement in every single position in the team. Erling Haaland is the most prized asset in the team, but his backup Julian Alvarez has more collection of trophies than his countryman Lionel Messi as he fits the bill for perfect Plan B.

Last season City sanctioned the exit of Joao Cancelo, one of the best defenders in the world but still lifted the treble of Premier League, FA Cup, and the Champions League, highlighting the depth in the squad. City currently have the likes of Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake as secondary defensive pair to John Stones and Ruben Dias while Stefan Ortega serves as deputy to ever-impressive Ederson in goal.

<h2>Guardiola’s experience as tactician</h2>

Ever since stamping his authority as the best football tactician with Barcelona, Pep has displayed flawless show to capture titles everywhere he has gone. Pep’s tiki-taka style of football brought Barcelona to prominence as he repeated the same trick in Germany with Bayern Munich and Manchester City in England. Since 2009, only three managers have stopped Pep from winning a league title – Jose Mourinho in 2012, Antonio Conte in 2017 and Jurgen Klopp in 2020.

The Spanish gaffer has masterminded a City side that has scored the most goals in England since 2016 and has won the league in five seasons. Pep’s man management has seen him replace club legends like Vincent Kompany, Sergio Aguero, and David Silva with Dias, Haaland, and Bernardo Silva.

<h2>Killer-instinct</h2>

City over the years have developed a killer-instinct DNA that has seen them win games from 0-2 down. The defending champions trailed in big games against Liverpool and Manchester United but never gave up hopes of winning at the decisive stage. Trailing Arsenal by eight points at the start of April and winning the league by five points&nbsp;in May was the perfect example of a killer-instinct approach.

On the other hand, opposition teams like Manchester United and Liverpool have lacked the killer instinct in them. While Arsenal were great throughout the last season, their decisive stage fumble against Southampton and Nottingham Forest cost them the league title.

<h2>Momentum</h2>

For the last few years, City have developed the habit of developing momentum at the tail end of the season. In 2022-23, the blue side of Manchester won 12 consecutive matches to seal the league title while staying focused on other competitions. The momentum has been key to their success as players like Kevin de Bryune, Haaland, and Bernardo Silva thrive under pressure. In the 2018-19 season, City won 13 consecutive matches to win the Premier League.

<h2>Haaland’s rise</h2>

While there could be multiple reasons for City’s success, the most important factor will be the number of chances Haaland pokes in front of the goal. City scored 94 goals in the Premier League last season, with Haaland scoring 36 of those. His conversion rate in front of the goal has seen City with no shortage of goals and leaving them firm favourites to win the title. If he repeats his performance along with defensive additions they could end up smoothly winning the title.

<h2>Spending power</h2>

City’s power in spending the cash in the transfer window could also see them get the ideal replacement and challenge for the Premier League prize. They have already signed Josko Gvardiol as a replacement for departing Aymeric Laporte while Mateo Kovacic is already an upgrade for the legendary İlkay Gündoğan. The spending power in the transfer market coupled with a better squad has seen them fill the void left by any injured or unavailable player. Jérémy Doku is already on his way as a replacement for Riyad Mahrez, showing City’s hunger for success.

EXPLAINED | Why Manchester City are favourites to win Premier League title in 2023-24 season

Chelsea won their first competitive match under Coach Mauricio Pochettino with a 3-0 home victory over Premier League new boys Luton Town on Friday thanks to two goals by Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Jackson's first strike for the Londoners.

Sterling received the ball from wing back Malo Gusto, cut in from the right and weaved his way through Luton's defence before shooting low into the far corner in the 17th minute for one of his best goals in a Chelsea shirt.

The duo combined again in the 68th when Gusto ran onto a pass from British record transfer signing Moises Caicedo, looking composed on his first start for Chelsea, and the Frenchman crossed for a simple finish by Sterling.

Seven minutes later, the England winger turned provider as he crossed for Jackson and the Senegal striker stretched out a boot to score his first Chelsea goal since signing from Villarreal in June.

It was the big-spending Blues' first win of the season after an opening day 1-1 draw against Liverpool and last Sunday's 3-1 defeat at West Ham United and only their second win in 15 Premier League games including last season's dreadful run.

Luton, playing just their second top-division game in 31 years - after opening with a 4-1 defeat at Brighton &amp; Hove Albion - and with a side assembled largely from players out of the lower divisions, spurned a chance to level on the hour.

Ryan Giles had the goal at his mercy but Gusto half-blocked his shot and keeper Robert Sanchez reached for the looping ball.

The home fans responded enthusiastically as Chelsea recorded their first home league win since March 4 and Pochettino lived up to his promise to get the Blues playing attractive football after the struggles of last season under Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, both of whom were fired.

Sterling has flourished under the Argentine having struggled to find consistent form for much of the time since his move from Manchester City in July last year.

"I had a conversation with the gaffer earlier last week and we've gone through the role and I know exactly what he needs from me and it's as simple as that," Sterling said. "I came in a difficult period, that's all finished," he added. "I think the most important thing, I've had a look at myself and I'm a person who always tries to analyse what I've been doing, what I've done wrong, what I can change."

In a less spectacular way, Friday's win was also significant for the way Caicedo slotted into the anchor role in Chelsea's midfield, allowing Enzo Fernandez and Conor Gallagher to venture further forward and stretch Luton who were outclassed.

It was the big-spending Blues' first win of the season after an opening day 1-1 draw against Liverpool and last Sunday's 3-1 defeat at West Ham United and only their second win in 15 Premier League games including last season's dreadful run. Luton, playing just their second top-division game in 31 years - after opening with a 4-1 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion - and with a side assembled largely from players out of the lower divisions, spurned a chance to level on the hour. "I think the most important thing, I've had a look at myself and I'm a person who always tries to analyse what I've been doing, what I've done wrong, what I can change." In a less spectacular way, Friday's win was also significant for the way Caicedo slotted into the anchor role in Chelsea's midfield, allowing Enzo Fernandez and Conor Gallagher to venture further forward and stretch Luton who were outclassed. Premier League: Mauricio Pochettino's new-look Chelsea storm pass Luton Town 3-0

Premier League champions Manchester City racked up a club-record 17th successive home win in all competitions with a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday. A superb strike from Julian Alvarez sealed the points for Pep Guardiola's side, but the relief they showed at the final whistle said a lot about a strong Newcastle display.

City's win lifted them to six points from two games alongside Brighton and Hove Albion who earlier in the day thumped Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-1 away.

Manchester United were unable to join City and Brighton at the top of the fledgling table though as they went down to a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur in what was Ange Postecoglou's first home game in charge of the London club.

Liverpool came from a goal down to beat Bournemouth 3-1 although ended the game with 10 men after Alexis Mac Allister was shown a red card on his home debut.

Brentford are now unbeaten in 11 successive London derbies after they cruised to a 3-0 win at Fulham who also finished with 10 men after Tim Ream was sent off after conceding a penalty.

Manchester City made light of the absence of Kevin de Bruyne, who had surgery this week after damaging a hamstring in the 3-0 opening win over Burnley. In their first home game since clinching the treble last season, City's stunning feat was honoured in grand fashion before kickoff at The Etihad Stadium.

City will be contending for multiple trophies again this season, but Newcastle showed why Guardiola has tipped them to be amongst the contenders for their Premier League crown. That said, City were comfortably the better side in the opening half in which Alvarez broke the deadlock with a powerful strike in the 31st minute after being picked out by Phil Foden.

Newcastle grew in belief after the break but they discovered that for all City's attacking attributes, they also possess one of the tightest rearguards in Europe and Eddie Howe's side could find no way through to goal.

"There was a moment around 60-70 minutes in and I thought we could get control but they are a very good team and played through the press a few times," Howe said. "They strangle you with the ball to a degree. You tire yourself out getting it back and with fatigue the decision making goes slightly."

Tottenham continued to banish the clouds of gloom that had preceded the new campaign as they proved there is life after Harry Kane with a vibrant display against a sloppy United.

Pape Matar Sarr's maiden Premier League goal, struck high into the net from a deflected cross just after halftime, and a late own goal by Lisandro Martinez sealed the victory which gave Tottenham four points from two games.

"We want to entertain for sure but in terms of being successful," Postecoglou said. "The atmosphere was incredible today. The energy the fans created was amazing."

Brighton's impressive start to the season continued and they are leading Man City on goal difference after crushing Wolves with three goals arriving in a devastating nine-minute spell in the second half against pointless Wolves.

Kaoru Mitoma opened the scoring for Brighton in the 15th minute with a sensational solo goal and he turned provider in the first minute of the second half to set up Pervis Estupinan.

Solly March then scored twice in four minutes, with Julio Enciso assisting him on both occasions.

Liverpool beat Bournemouth 9-0 a year ago but they found the south coast club a tougher nut to crack this time.

They went behind to an Antoine Semenyo goal but replied with goals from Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota.

The gloss was taken off though as Mac Allister was sent off for a high tackle.

"Horrible start to the game," Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said. "We needed a few minutes to shake it off and then we were really good."

Bryan Mbeumo scored twice and Yoane Wissa was also on target as Brentford got the better of Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Fulham lost Ream when he conceded the penalty in the 63rd minute that allowed Brentford to go 2-0 up. "The game was finished from that moment," Fulham boss Marco Silva said.

West Ham United face Chelsea on Sunday with Aston Villa at home to Everton -- all four sides seeking a first win.

PL wrap-up: Manchester City beat gritty Newcastle 1-0, Spurs dust off Manchester United 2-0

Liverpool's new boy Alexis Mac Allister was given a huge reprieve by the Football Association (FA) on Tuesday, August 22 after his red card against Bournemouth was rescinded following a successful appeal. Mac Allister, on his Anfield debut, was sent off by referee Thomas Bramall in the 58th minute and saw the Reds play the final half an hour with 10 men. The direct card would have seen him miss this week’s contest against Newcastle United, but will now be available after a successful appeal.

<h2>Relief for Liverpool</h2>

"After the game, I saw it back. I think if you have a list of points, what we need to give a red card, besides contact there's nothing else, no other boxes ticked," Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool manager said on Saturday.

"It's a decision we all agree if he gives a yellow card VAR would not overturn it and if he gives a red card VAR will not overturn it because contact means it's not a clear and obvious mistake."

Despite the red card, the Reds started their home campaign on a high as they beat Bournemouth 3-1 to remain unbeaten in the Premier League. They started their season against Chelsea in a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge last week.

"An independent regulatory commission has removed Alexis Mac Allister's three-match suspension following a claim of wrongful dismissal," a Football Association spokesperson said.

"The Liverpool midfielder was sent off for serious foul play during their Premier League game against Bournemouth on Saturday, 19 August."

The Reds will now hope for a better outcome in their upcoming fixture against Newcastle, who started their home season with a 5-1 win against Aston Villa. Klopp’s men will look to build on their fifth-place finish in the Premier League, having narrowly missed out on a Champions League place last season.

Klopp’s men will be involved in Europa League action this season and will have to play fiddle on Thursday night.

So far at the season of the season, they remain one of seven teams yet to lose a match in the Premier League. They currently sit on four points from their opening two matches with surprise package Brighton sitting top of the pile with six points. Champions Manchester City and Arsenal remain the other sides with a 100 per cent win record in the Premier League.

Premier League: Man City manager Pep Guardiola to miss two matches after back surgery

John Stones will be out of action until after the international break due to an injury, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said, casting doubt on the defender's availability for England's Euro qualifier against Ukraine and friendly with Scotland next month.

Stones, 29, suffered a muscle injury during pre-season training and did not feature in wins over Burnley, Sevilla and Newcastle United.

The next international break is from Sep. 4-12, and Stones is set to miss the games against Sheffield United and Fulham scheduled on Sunday and Sep. 2, respectively.

Guardiola is facing additional injury concerns, with Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne sidelined for at least four months after suffering a hamstring injury during City's 3-0 win over Burnley in the opening game of the Premier League season.

Guardiola said he needs the remaining squad to step-up in the absence of key players.

"We will need everyone for this schedule and calendar. We have to come back how the people (City fans) come back. Stones will not be ready until after the international break," the Spaniard told reporters.

The treble winners have lost influential players such as Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez, who left after a trophy-laden spell to join Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli.

Former City captain Ilkay Gundogan also joined LaLiga giants Barcelona, and Guardiola said "the club will have to take some important decisions about the squad" due to the unexpected exits and injuries.

City beat Sevilla on penalties to secure their first UEFA Super Cup title last week, and Guardiola said he is impressed by his players after a perfect start to the new campaign despite a hectic schedule.

"We already won one title, we are six points from six, score goals and didn't concede many chances against Burnley or against Newcastle...," Guardiola added.

"Rest and go for another one, for another game. When you have that, it's because the team is so special. Otherwise, we cannot do what we have done for many years. It's impossible.

"(The Newcastle game) amazed me and made me so happy because it's still okay - we have to do our best every day (and) they have done it. It was really, really good."

Injury concern mounts for Manchester City as star defender John Stones ruled out until September, confirms Pep

Pep Guardiola said Manchester City are judged differently than other clubs on the subject of transfer spending, arguing they would be "killed" if they splashed out as much money on new signings as Chelsea have over the last 12 months.

City's spending has been scrutinised since Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Mansour became owner in 2008. The club is facing 115 charges brought by the Premier League for alleged breaches of financial regulations.

Chelsea have spent more than $1 billion in player transfer fees since the new ownership led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital completed their takeover of the club in May 2022.

"We'd be under scrutiny like you couldn't imagine," Guardiola told reporters on Friday. "I couldn't sit here if we spent what Chelsea spent in the last two transfer windows - you would kill me.

"We have to see what happens in the market and if we can do it and to pay what we believe is fair... In the end, we will pay what is fair to do it. Otherwise, we have the academy."

City signed defender Josko Gvardiol earlier this month while midfielder Mateo Kovacic joined in June, with the transfer fees reported to be 90 million euros ($97.79 million) and 25 million pounds ($32 million), respectively.

Chelsea have brought in eight players so far. Midfielder Romeo Lavia arrived on Friday for a reported fee of 53 million pounds, their second signing of the week after Moises Caicedo joined for a fee which could rise to a British record 115 million pounds.

"I don't criticise Chelsea for one second," Guardiola added. "I'm saying, if we do it, we're dead, all around the world. They can do what they want.

"If they want to spend, I don't know, 900 million pounds since (Boehly) arrived, 900 more, 900 more - they have it. The business is the business. They sell a lot this season so they can do it."

If we spent what Chelsea spent in last two transfer windows, you would kill me: Pep Guardiola tells media

Arsenal suffered a setback on Wednesday when they announced Dutch defender Jurrien Timber would be sidelined with a major knee injury.

The 22-year-old damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the Gunners' 2-1 win at home to Nottingham Forest in their opening match of the new Premier League season last weekend.

A statement on Arsenal's website said: "Jurrien will undergo surgery in the coming days and will be out of action for a period of time."

"The support and expertise from our medical team and everyone at the club will now be focussed on Jurrien's rehabilitation programme, to ensure he recovers well and is back playing as soon as possible."

Timber only joined Arsenal, bidding to go one better than last season's second place in the Premier League, in July in an initial 40-million-euro ($45 million) move from Dutch giants Ajax.

He won two Eredivisie titles in 121 appearances for Ajax and was a member of the Netherlands squad that reached the quarter-finals of last year's World Cup.

He can operate at both centre-back and right-back and it had been hoped he would bring added depth to an Arsenal defence that struggled to cope with injuries to William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu towards the end of last season.

Timber's arrival at the Emirates Stadium came as a part of a pre-season spending spree that saw Declan Rice and Kai Havertz join the club, with the trio's combined transfer fees totalling in excess of £200 million ($254 million).

Arsenal, however, may now have to go into the transfer window again to get cover for Timber, with Mikel Arteta's side looking to overhaul treble-winners Manchester City as Premier League champions.

The Gunners' next match is away to Crystal Palace on Monday.

Arsenal suffered a setback on Wednesday when they announced Dutch defender Jurrien Timber would be sidelined with a major knee injury. A statement on Arsenal's website said: "Jurrien will undergo surgery in the coming days and will be out of action for a period of time." "The support and expertise from our medical team and everyone at the club will now be focussed on Jurrien's rehabilitation programme, to ensure he recovers well and is back playing as soon as possible." Timber only joined Arsenal, bidding to go one better than last season's second place in the Premier League, in July in an initial 40-million-euro ($45 million) move from Dutch giants Ajax. He won two Eredivisie titles in 121 appearances for Ajax and was a member of the Netherlands squad that reached the quarter-finals of last year's World Cup. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.

Premier League: Arsenal's Jurrien Timber out with knee injury; to undergo surgery in coming days

Manchester United survived an onslaught from Wolves and huge claims for a late penalty to start the Premier League season with a 1-0 win thanks to Raphael Varane's header on Monday.

Wolves had seen manager Julen Lopetegui walk out less than a week before the new campaign, but dominated for long spells at Old Trafford.

A combination of wasteful finishing and new United goalkeeper Andre Onana kept the visitors at bay until Varane headed in 14 minutes from time.

Onana was lucky to escape when he punched Sasa Kalajdzic as he flapped at a cross deep into stoppage time and VAR did not intervene.

"It looked like the keeper nearly took our forward's head off," said Wolves boss Gary O'Neil. "I think it is a foul. You go for the ball and clatter the player that hard. It is a penalty."

O'Neil added that Premier League referees chief Jon Moss had contacted him after the game to apologise for the decision.

United clung on to get off to a winning start, in stark contrast to the two defeats that began Erik ten Hag's reign 12 months ago.

But the manner of the performance raises questions over whether United can pose a serious challenge for their first Premier League title in a decade.

"There is no easy game in the Premier League and definitely not Wolves," said Ten Hag.

"You have to fight in every game. We hope we'll be better on the ball in the next game."

United fans' wishes that a new season would start under new ownership have not been met with a sale process seemingly at a standstill.

The home support again showed their displeasure towards owners, the Glazer family, with a pre-match protest against the Americans and chants of "we want Glazers out" at kick-off.

That lingering uncertainty has not stopped another summer of big spending by the Red Devils.

Onana and midfielder Mason Mount were handed their debuts by Ten Hag, but new £64 million ($81 million) striker Rasmus Hojlund was ruled out by a back injury.

Wolves, by contrast, lost Lopetegui less six days ago due to a lack of funds in the transfer market.

O'Neil replaced the Spaniard tasked with repeating his heroics in keeping Bournemouth in the Premier League last season.

Wolves did not look like a club in crisis as they controlled the game, but suffered from a lack of a cutting edge up front.

Pablo Sarabia and Matheus Cunha fired the best chances of the first-half just past the post.

Cunha came even closer at the start of the second period. The Brazilian should have scored when he hit the outside of the post with the goal gaping.

The £44 million obligation to buy Cunha from Atletico Madrid this summer has restricted Wolves' budget.

But the 24-year-old showed a glimpse of why he could yet live up to that fee with a surging run through the heart of the United midfield before firing a low shot that Onana turned behind.

Pedro Neto was next to waste a glorious opportunity when he shot straight at Onana with just the Cameroonian to beat.

Wolves wastefulness in front of goal came back to haunt them when Varane nodded in 15 minutes from time.

Bruno Fernandes' pass picked out Aaron Wan-Bissaka, whose lofted cross picked out the French centre-back to head into an unguarded net.

Wolves could still have bounced back to take a more than deserved point.

Onana twice denied substitute Fabio Silva with his legs before the former Inter Milan 'keeper somehow when he flapped at a cross and wiped out Kalajdzic.

Premier League: Man Utd punish wasteful Wolves for winning opener; Varane scores only goal in 76th minute

Chelsea and Liverpool had to settle for a 1-1 draw to start their Premier League season on Sunday as Tottenham also drew 2-2 at Brentford as they began life without Harry Kane.

After a week of battling to land the signing of Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo for a Premier League record transfer fee, both Chelsea and Liverpool's need for the Ecuadorian was exposed in an explosive encounter.

Liverpool's bright start was rewarded when Luis Diaz prodded home the opening goal, but debutant Axel Disasi earned Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino a point on his first game in charge.

"This result makes us believe, that is why I am positive," said Pochettino.

"That is the beginning, it is the minimum standard and from that we need to go."

The American executives of both clubs were in attendance at Stamford Bridge ahead of an intense few days of negotiations after Liverpool had a £110 million offer accepted for Caicedo, only for the player to remain keen on a move to Chelsea instead.

After his defensive midfield options were gutted by the departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Saudi Arabia, Jurgen Klopp named an offensive front six with new signings Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai alongside Cody Gakpo in midfield.

Liverpool settled the better and Mohamed Salah was inches away from opening the scoring when he rattled the crossbar on 12 minutes.

Salah was involved when the Reds did take the lead six minutes later with a brilliant cross that Diaz prodded home at the back post.

The Egyptian's record of scoring on the opening weekend every year of his Liverpool career came to an end, but only due to a VAR review that ruled out a slick finish that would have made it 2-0.

However, the momentum of the game swung after Disasi bundled home Chelsea's equaliser.

"We opened up the door for Chelsea," said Klopp. "It gave the game a different direction so we were not in control of the game."

Seconds later Ben Chilwell thought he had turned the game on its head, only for VAR to this time ride to Liverpool's rescue for offside.

Chances continued to come and go at both ends, but a seventh consecutive clash between the sides ended in a draw.

<h2>Life after Harry Kane</h2>

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou said his side had shown there is life after Kane despite failing to get the Australian's reign off to a winning start.

Spurs settled the better despite a disruptive weekend dominated by the club's record goalscorer departing for Bayern Munich on Saturday.

Cristian Romero headed Spurs ahead on 11 minutes from James Maddison's wicked delivery.

Brentford were also without their talismanic number nine as Ivan Toney began an eight-month ban for breaking betting on football rules.

Bryan Mbeumo took over penalty duties in his absence to slot home the equaliser after a VAR review spotted a trip by Son Heung-min on Mathias Jensen inside the box.

Moments later Yoane Wissa's shot deflected in off Spurs new boy Micky van de Ven.

Emerson Royal was the unlikely scorer of Tottenham's equaliser four minutes into 10 added at the end of the first half when he blasted home a loose ball from outside the box.

Yet, Brentford should still have gone in ahead at the break as Mbeumo somehow turned Rico Henry's inviting cross over from point-blank range.

Tottenham dominated the second half in terms of possession but struggled to make it count as they already felt the absence of Kane.

But Postecoglou remained positive that Spurs sent their supporters home still with some hope for the season ahead.

"Harry Kane was a massive figure for this club for a long time and will continue to be whether he is in the building or not," said the former Celtic manager.

"We wanted to go out and give our supporters some hope and belief in the team. I thought they did that today."

Premier League: Chelsea, Liverpool stalemate shows need for Caicedo; Spurs held by Brentford

Arsenal's Premier League title challenge got off to a winning start on Saturday but the big-spending Gunners were made to sweat in a 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest.

First-half goals from Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka&nbsp;had the home side cruising at the Emirates.

But they were made to suffer a nervy finale after Taiwo Awoniyi came off the bench to pull a goal back for Forest seven minutes from time.

The day got off to an embarrassing start for Arsenal as kick-off was delayed by 30 minutes due to issues with an e-ticketing scheme that left tens of thousands of fans unable to take their seats in time for the scheduled 1130GMT kick-off.

Once the action got underway, Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber were handed their league debuts after joining for combined fees in excess of £200 million ($254 million).

However, three points for the home side was soured by an injury suffered by Timber as he pulled up early in the second half.

By that point the game should have been over as a contest as Arsenal sprang out of the blocks.

Mikel Arteta's men are looking to go one better after finishing second behind treble-winners Manchester City last season.

City cruised to a 3-0 win at Burnley to open the Premier League season on Friday night and Arsenal should have followed suit rather than holding on for the final whistle.

Forest have their home form to thank for staying in the English top flight last season on their return to the Premier League after a 23-year absence.

Steve Cooper has targeted an improvement to their poor return on the road, but they barely laid a glove on the hosts until the introduction of Awoniyi and Anthony Elanga late on.

<h2>Martinelli magic</h2>

Forest's rearguard resistence lasted 26 minutes until the visitors were undone by a moment of magic from Gabriel Martinelli.

The Brazilian's turn took him past two defenders before the ball broke for Nketiah to drill low beyond Forest debutant Matt Turner, on his return to the Emirates after leaving Arsenal this week.

Turner had no chance with the second six minutes later as Saka cut onto his favoured left foot and arrowed a trademark strike high into the far corner.

Timber had recovered from a knock at the end of the first period to take his place at the start of the second.

But the Dutch international then pulled up holding his hamstring and had to be replaced just four minutes into the second-half.

Awoniyi was surprisingly left out by Cooper despite scoring in Forest's final four games of last season, including the winner against Arsenal that secured his side's survival in May.

The Nigerian continued his scoring streak by turning home at the near post after former Manchester United winger Elanga sprinted the length of the field from an Arsenal corner.

Arsenal held on through seven minutes of added time, but it was a far from convincing start to their quest to become English champions for the first time in 20 years.

Premier League: Arsenal survive Forest scare to make winning start; Nketiah, Saka score in 2-1 home win

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has insisted that he is ready to move on from the Harry Kane transfer saga after the club agreed a $100 million deal with Bayern Munich on Thursday, August 10. The Spurs manager though is not looking back at the picture and is insisting his team move on as they prepare for the new Premier League season. It is reported that Harry will land in Munich on Friday for medicals before he puts pen to paper for the proposed deal.

<h2>Ready for Post-Kane life</h2>

“I don’t have a blow by blow account of the whole thing but I understand it has progressed to where it will happen. That’s all the information I have at the moment. It looks like we’ll move forward without Harry,” Postecoglou said in his pre-match press conference on Friday.

“I don’t have feelings either way about needing anything. From my perspective it’s about understanding where were are at. I understand the deal is imminent.”

The move will see the end of an era at Spurs as Harry leaves with the legendary status of being the club’s top scorer. He is also the second-top scorer in the history of the Premier League with only Alan Shearer scoring more goals than the England captain.

“We’ve been planning for this, it’s fair to say, for a while. It doesn’t take too much investigative work to realise this was going to happen. A lot of our business so far has been with this in mind. It doesn’t change my plans dramatically.”

<h2>What next?</h2>

Spurs will now look to bolster their ranks quickly as they focus on the transfer market with three weeks to go. It will be hard for Spurs to find a striker of Kane’s quality as he ended up scoring 30 Premier League goals despite them finishing eighth. While no particular name is in the running to replace Kane, Spurs will be expected to go with a wait-and-watch stance to avoid spending wrongly.

The North London club will start their season against fellow London rivals Brentford on Sunday, with manager Postecoglou making his official debut.

Premier League: Ange Postecoglou ready for life after Harry Kane, insists Tottenham ready to move on

Young English full-back Reece James has been named Chelsea's captain and he will lead the men's side for the 2023-24 season. James has spent his entire career with Chelsea. He joined the Blues at the age of eight and he rose through the ranks to seal his place in the senior men's team.&nbsp;

"I'm so happy to take on the role and responsibility. 'I know I've got big shoes to fill because we have had huge captains here in the past, but I am excited. I have been at Chelsea pretty much my whole life. I started here when I was six and to come through the Academy is tough. But to go on and become captain, it's a great feeling for me and my family," James said, according to club's website.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino also expressed his views on James taking up the captaincy role and said, "This is a decision taken by me and the club. We are very pleased Reece will captain the side this season. He leads by example and his attitude and dedication to Chelsea has been clear throughout pre-season. He proudly wore the armband during our summer tour and will take up the challenge of leading our squad with his own approach and ideas."

He joined the Blues at the age of eight and he rose through the ranks to seal his place in the senior men's team. He proudly wore the armband during our summer tour and will take up the challenge of leading our squad with his own approach and ideas." Premier League: Chelsea announce Reece James as new club captain after César Azpilicueta departure

The Premier League is investigating potential financial rule breaches at Chelsea under Roman Abramovich's ownership, CEO Richard Masters told Britain's Times newspaper on Wednesday (August 9, 2023).

Abramovich sold the club last year to an investment group led by American businessman Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital after the Russian oligarch's assets in Britain were frozen by the UK government following his country's invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a "special military operation".

Chelsea's new owners self-reported a number of financial transactions during the Abramovich era to European soccer's governing body UEFA, the Premier League and the FA.

The Times reported that the inquiry encompasses multi-million-pound payments to undisclosed offshore entities, with connections to football intermediaries, potentially resulting in penalties such as a substantial fine or even a points deduction for the club.

UEFA reached a settlement in July with Chelsea over the submission of incomplete financial information, related to "historical transactions" between 2012-19, with the London club paying a fine of 10 million euros ($10.98 million).

Football: Premier League investigating Chelsea over possible financial violations

Gary O'Neil has been appointed as the new head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers on a three-year contract, the Premier League club announced on Wednesday.

Wolves wasted little time in bringing in the former Bournemouth manager after Julen Lopetegui, quit his post on Tuesday -- just days before the start of the new Premier League season.

Lopetegui and Wolves parted company less than a week before their first game of the 2023/24 league campaign, at Manchester United on Monday, with reported differences on transfer policy said to be behind the end of the Spaniard's nine months in charge at Molineux.

The 40-year-old O'Neil, a rising star among English football managers, was immediately installed as favourite to take over at the West Midlands club, having been surprisingly sacked by Bournemouth in June despite guiding the Cherries to Premier League safety last season.

<h2>Highly motivated O'Neil</h2>

"We're delighted to welcome Gary to the club," said Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs in a statement.

"He's a highly-motivated young coach with strong principles and very well thought of by everyone he has worked with, and we're excited to see what we can achieve together at Wolves.

"Our players have shown their quality during pre-season, and I believe Gary and his team will continue to coach and improve them and will have success working with this group."

O'Neil, who made his name in football as a midfielder with Portsmouth, replaced Scott Parker as Bournemouth manager at the end of August last year and led the team to a 15th-place finish in the Premier League.&nbsp;

O'Neil initially took over from Parker on an interim basis following a 9-0 hammering at Liverpool before being appointed permanently in November.

He took 36 points from his 34 top-flight games in charge but was still let go by Bournemouth who, just hours later, appointed former Rayo Vallecano boss Andoni Iraola as their new manager.&nbsp;

Former Spain and Real Madrid boss Lopetegui joined Wolves in November, replacing&nbsp;Bruno Lage, with the club bottom of the Premier League and helped them stay in the top flight, finishing 13th.

But the 56-year-old was said to be frustrated by their approach in the transfer market, with a number of first-team players departing this summer and few replacements found.

Wolves have sold the likes of Ruben Neves, Conor Coady, Nathan Collins and Raul Jimenez and have only brought in two players on free transfers -- Matt Doherty and Tom King.

Tuesday's statement acknowledged the rift between Lopetegui and Wolves's hierarchy by saying: "The head coach and club acknowledged and accepted their differences of opinion on certain issues and agreed that an amicable end to his contract was the best solution for all parties."

Premier League: Wolves appoint Gary O'Neil as new head coach after Julen Lopetegui exit

Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku has undergone knee surgery that will rule the French international out for an "extended period" the Premier League club said on Tuesday.

Nkunku, 25, joined the Blues in June from RB Leipzig for a reported £63 million ($80 million).

The BBC and The Telegraph reported that Nkunku could be out for up to four months.

He was expected to spearhead a new-look Chelsea this season under the management of Mauricio Pochettino.

The news comes as a hammer blow just days before they begin their Premier League campaign at home to Liverpool on Sunday.

In a statement, Chelsea said: "Nkunku has sustained a knee injury which will rule the forward out for an extended period.

"The 25-year-old has undergone an operation and will now begin a rehabilitation programme with the club’s medical department."

Nkunku, who missed last year's World Cup finals due to a left knee problem, suffered the injury during a pre-season friendly against Borussia Dortmund in Chicago last week.

Pochettino described the pitch at Soldier Field as "not perfect" but conceded that is the risk in playing a money-spinning tour of the States on surfaces designed for multi-sport use.

Chelsea could now be forced into the transfer market to recruit more firepower.

A return of just 38 goals in the Premier League last season contributed to a 12th-placed finish -- their lowest since 1994.

Premier League: Chelsea's Christopher Nkunku to miss up to four months with knee surgery

European and Premier League champions Manchester City have finally completed the signing of Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig on Saturday, August 5. In the second most expensive transfer for a center-back, City paid a reported fee of mouth-watering $100 million to get their man. The center-back put pen to paper on Saturday for a five-year deal to become the club’s second signing in the close season.

“I have always dreamed of one day playing in England and to be doing so now with Manchester City – after the season they have just had – is a real honour for me.

“Anyone who saw Manchester City play last season knows they are the best team in the world. To win the Treble says everything you need to know about the quality this team has.

“To be joining City is something very special for me and my family,” Gvardiol said during his unveiling.

Gvardiol made 87 appearances for RB Leipzig across the 2021/22 and 2022/23 campaigns, scoring five goals and winning two DFB-Pokal trophies. He has won 21 caps for Croatia, excelling in their third-place finish in the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar.

The 21-year-old has become the second City signing this summer as he joins international teammate Mateo Kovacic. The former Champions League winner was signed from Chelsea in a deal close to $40 million as a direct replacement for departing İlkay Gündoğan.

The deal could now see the departure of Aymeric Laporte from the Etihad Stadium with him being surplus to requirements at the club. Laporte was behind the pecking order of Jones Stones, Nathan Ake, Ruben Dias and Manuel Akanji. The club will also look to find suitors for Joao Cancelo having been asked to leave the club in January. Football Transfers: Treble winners Manchester City sign Croatian Joško Gvardiol from RB Leipzig

Manchester United signed a 900 million pound ($1.1 billion) deal with Adidas on Monday, renewing the English soccer club's partnership with its official kit supplier for 10 more years.

Manchester United, whose U.S. owners have been considering selling the Premier League club, will return to the lucrative UEFA Champions League this year after securing a top-four finish in the domestic league last season under manager Erik ten Hag.

German sportswear giant Adidas became the club's official kit sponsor in the 2015/16 season, reuniting after 23 years and taking over from Nike after sealing a 750-million-pounddeal, which was a record at the time.

"The new deal increases the focus on the Manchester United women's team since their reintroduction in 2018," United said in a joint press release with Adidas.

United is still in talks to sell itself after American owners, the Glazer family, launched a formal sale process late last year.

Qatar's Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe are among the potential suitors for the club.

The new deal with Adidas, ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League season starting next month, will continue the partnership until June 2035, the northwest England-based club said.

The original agreement with Adidas links a part of the yearly payments to the club's participation in the Champions League, according to the company's latest annual report.

A failure by the club to play in the Champions league for two or more consecutive seasons reduces its annual payments by 30% of the applicable amount, according to the deal.

United did not immediately comment on the terms of the new deal. Adidas declined to comment.

"We will combine tradition and innovation to please both the players and the fans," Adidas CEO Bjorn Gulden said.

Last month, the 20-times English soccer champions raised their annual profit and revenue forecasts.

Manchester United reunite with Adidas in a whopping $1.1 billion deal for 10 years

Inter Miami co-owner and England legend David Beckham admits involvement with Manchester United in any capacity in future would mean the 'world to him' but added the owners - the Glazers must leave for good as this is what fans want.

An Old Trafford veteran expressed his thoughts on the ever-going Manchester United takeover saga (ongoing since November last year), with Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe being frontrunners.

Speaking with The Athletic in an exclusive chat, Beckham said losing fans is the worst that could happen to a club. Especially with a club like Manchester United, where fans are valued a lot, if something of this sort happens, it would be hard to get them back.

"Once you lose the fans, especially at a club like Manchester United, it's hard to get them back.

"Obviously, they (the Glazers) have achieved a lot, and financially, the fact we're even talking about the numbers of what Manchester United will sell for shows the success they've had. But there needs to be change. We've all seen that, we all know that," Beckham said, as quoted by Sky Sports.

<h2>Ten Hag came as a breather for United</h2>

While the current Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag faced severe criticism over Cristiano Ronaldo's transfer saga late last year, with him at the helm, he looks like the right man for the job, something Beckham also believes.

Six-time Premier League winner with the Red Devils, Beckham also addressed the issue at hand - United's fall since Sir Alex Ferguson's reign ended.

"It hasn't been the greatest of times for Manchester United, on the field or off the field," Beckham said. "Seeing [head coach] Erik ten Hag come in is a breath of fresh air. He has had some tough decisions to make, but he has done it in the most elegant way and in a way where he has got the fans on his side.

"Off the field, as a fan and ex-player, I just want [the takeover] resolved. There has to be a decision. Whoever is running your club, you want them to be passionate, be involved, make the right decisions, bring in the right players and invest in the club," Beckham added.

<h2>Manchester United glory with motivated squad&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;</h2>

Manchester United hasn't been at its best for a long time. With the inclusion of new faces, including England and Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount, the Red Devils are likely to put behind their past performances and vow for glory in the upcoming season.

The addition of André Onana as the new goalkeeper will also lift their hopes of tasting success in the Premier League and other domestic competitions.

ALSO READ: FIFA Women's World Cup: Five-star Sweden crush Italy to reach last 16 "Once you lose the fans, especially at a club like Manchester United, it's hard to get them back. "Obviously, they (the Glazers) have achieved a lot, and financially, the fact we're even talking about the numbers of what Manchester United will sell for shows the success they've had. But there needs to be change. We've all seen that, we all know that," Beckham said, as quoted by Sky Sports. Ten Hag came as a breather for United While the current Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag faced severe criticism over Cristiano Ronaldo's transfer saga late last year, with him at the helm, he looks like the right man for the job, something Beckham also believes. Manchester United glory with motivated squad Manchester United hasn't been at its best for a long time. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Juventus will not play in Europe next season after being banned over breaches of UEFA's Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play rules, while Premier League side Chelsea will pay 10 million euros for submitting incomplete financial information, Europe's soccer governing body said on Friday.

The UEFA Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) opened a formal investigation into Juventus in December, months after the Italian side was among eight clubs that reached a settlement with UEFA for failing to comply with break-even requirements.

In a statement on Friday, European soccer's governing body said it would "impose an additional financial contribution of 20 million euros on the club.

"Of this amount, 10 million euros is conditional and will only be enforced if the club's annual financial statements for the financial years 2023, 2024 and 2025 do not comply with the accounting requirements," UEFA added.

Juventus, who qualified for the Conference League playoff round after finishing seventh in Serie A last term, said they had waived the right to appeal that decision but maintained their innocence.

"We do not share the interpretation that has been given of our defense, and we remain firmly convinced of the legitimacy of our actions and the validity of our arguments.

However, we have decided not to appeal this judgment," Juventus Chairman Gianluca Ferrero said.

Ferrero added that Juventus' decision not to appeal was in line with the policy they employed during a settlement with Italy's soccer federation (FIGC) in May, where they opted to pay a fine of 718,000 euros and not challenge a 10-point penalty.

"As in that case, we prefer to put an end to the period of uncertainty and ensure full visibility and certainty to our internal and external stakeholders about the club's participation in future international competitions," Ferrero said.

"Lodging an appeal, possibly to other levels of judgement, with uncertain outcomes and timing, would increase the uncertainty with respect to our eventual participation in the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League."

The Conference League qualifying rounds for the 2023-24 season started earlier this month.

<h2>CHELSEA SETTLEMENT</h2>

UEFA also reached a settlement with Chelsea over the submission of incomplete financial information, related to "historical transactions" between 2012-19 - prior to the London club's acquisition by the Boehly-Clearlake consortium in 2022.

"Following the club's sale in May 2022, the new ownership identified, and proactively reported to UEFA, instances of potentially incomplete financial reporting under the club’s previous ownership," UEFA said.

"Following its assessment, including the applicable statute of limitations, the CFCB First Chamber entered into a settlement agreement with the club which has agreed to pay a financial contribution of 10 million euros to fully resolve the reported matters."

Chelsea, who finished 12th in the Premier League following a chaotic campaign, will not be competing in Europe in 2023-24.

The British billionaire owner of English Premier League side Tottenham, Joe Lewis, has been indicted on charges of insider trading, US federal prosecutors said Tuesday in New York.

Damian Williams, US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, said the 86-year-old Bahamas-based Lewis furnished employees and lovers with inside information for years in a "brazen" scheme that raked in millions of dollars.

"Today I'm announcing that my office, the southern district of New York, has indicted Joe Lewis, the British billionaire, for orchestrating a brazen insider trading scheme," Williams said in a statement on Twitter, the social media platform undergoing a rebranding to X.

"We allege that for years Joe Lewis abused his access to corporate board rooms and repeatedly provided inside information to his romantic partners, his personal assistants, his private pilots and his friends.

"Those folks then traded on that inside information and made millions of dollars in the stock market, because thanks to Lewis those bets were a sure thing."

<h2>West Ham bid farewell</h2>

“Having progressed from the Academy of Football at Chadwell Heath, where he began his Claret and Blue journey as a 14-year-old in 2013 before making his first-team debut against Burnley in May 2017, the Kingston-born midfielder has established himself as one of the greatest young talents in world football,” read a statement on West Ham’s official website.

Rice was promoted to the captain’s role in 2022 after legendary captain Mark Noble announced his retirement. Rice was one of the prominent names in the West Ham academy and was also targeted by Manchester City before Arsenal sealed the deal. The player has been in great form for the last few years saw him earn England call-up in 2019.

He started the Euro 2020 final for England and has also represented the nation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

“I’d like to personally thank Declan for everything he has done during his time at West Ham United. Obviously it is sad when we say goodbye to someone who has been with us for so long but we must now look forward.

Football Transfers: West Ham United confirm Declan Rice departure to Arsenal

Arsenal announced the signing of Dutch international defender Jurrien Timber from Ajax on Friday as the Gunners continue to strengthen for a Premier League title challenge.

The 22-year-old will cost an initial 40 million euros ($45 million, £34 million) with a further five million euros worth of add-ons, Ajax confirmed in a statement.

Timber won two Eredivisie titles in 121 appearances for Ajax and was part of the Netherlands squad that reached the quarter-finals of last year's World Cup.

He can operate at both centre-back and right-back and will bring added depth to an Arsenal defence that struggled to cope with injuries to William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu towards the end of last season.

"We’re really excited that Jurrien has joined us," said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

"He is a versatile young defender, who will fit into our system and provide our squad with so much added quality."

Arsenal missed out on a first Premier League title for 19 years last season after finishing second behind treble winners Manchester City.

Kai Havertz has already joined from Chelsea in a £65 million deal, while Declan Rice is expected to complete a move worth up to £105 million from West Ham in the coming hours.

"I'm excited to play for this beautiful club, and I can't wait to start, and to see the fans obviously in the stadium," said Timber.

"I just like the way Arsenal play, it's a bit similar to Ajax’s style and I like to play from the back. I can see a lot of similarities, especially in the way Arsenal and Ajax want to play."

Football Transfers: Arsenal swoop for Dutch defender Jurrien Timber; Declan Rice deal expected soon

New Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is confident the team will only get better as he beds in his ideas and hopes to deliver quickly. The Argentine was speaking to media on Friday as the west London club presented him at a press conference.

Chelsea appointed Pochettino at the end of May after finishing 12th in the Premier League following a chaotic campaign, during which Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Frank Lampard had spells in charge of the side.

The 51-year-old Pochettino, who has signed a two-year contract with the option of a further year, started work on July 1 and will hope to change Chelsea's fortunes after their worst finish since 1994.

"My target is to win, my aim is to win," the former Tottenham Hotspur and Paris St Germain coach told reporters at Stamford Bridge. "Football is about today, yesterday. You cannot talk too much long term. We cannot tell people we need six months to create because it seems not good. We need to create the belief from the beginning."

"I think we are going to have a squad that can deliver in the short term and give what we expect and from day one we need to think to win. Then if we don't win, maybe if little by little we need more time to develop our idea, maybe it is possible."

"(But) from the beginning we need to think of the first game of the Premier League, we need to beat Liverpool."

Despite the optimism, Pochettino is aware there is a lot of work to do before they face Juergen Klopp's side in their opening match on August&nbsp;13.

"For me, it is clear, it is most important to finish the squad, to have a very balanced squad. The plan was to reduce the number of players. That for me was the most important, to find the right profiles, the players we are going to add."

"One of the challenges is that people trust my judgement ... That is the biggest power you can have."

<h2>Growing list</h2>

Captain Cesar Azpilicueta on Thursday moved to Atletico Madrid, joining the growing list of players leaving Chelsea in the close season after the exits of Kalidou Koulibaly, N'Golo Kante and Edouard Mendy, who all joined Saudi Pro League clubs.

Kai Havertz, Mateo Kovacic and academy product Mason Mount have signed for Premier League rivals Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United respectively.

Pochettino is the third permanent Chelsea manager since the club's sale in 2022 to a consortium led by LA Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly and backed by Clearlake Capital, a private equity firm.

The Argentine said he did not think long before accepting the offer.

"I trust in (the sporting directors) Paul (Winstanley), Laurence (Stewart) and the owners that they will provide the tools to be competitive," Pochettino added. "I think it was a nice conversation from the beginning, they were very honest with me. They showed the plan. The good and not so good things that need to happen before the first of July and after."

"I think they are clever people and football always is about being clever and learning from past experience. I feel good."

<h2>Van der Sar’s legendary career</h2>

Starting his career at Ajax, the Dutchman was part of the legendary Ajax squad that won the 1995 Champions League title under coach Louis van Gaal. He was part of the group that consisted of Patrick Kluivert, Clarence Seedorf, and several others. He would then reach another Champions League final in 1996 before losing to his eventual future club Juventus.

In 1999 he made his switch to Turin and was part of the team that had domestic success while playing for Juventus. However, the summer of 2001 saw a football upside-down after Real Madrid splashed the cash in the transfer market. Real paid Juventus a world-record fee to get the services of Zinedine Zidane which saw the Old Lady acquire several players including Pavel Nedvěd and Gianluigi Buffon.

The latter’s arrival for a record deal for a goalkeeper saw Van der Sar force an exit to Fulham where he continued until 2005. With Manchester United struggling to get a perfect fit for a good goalkeeper, then legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson signed the Dutch shot-stopper despite being 34 and would help the club win Premier League on three consecutive occasions while helping the team win the Champions League shootout against Chelsea in 2008.
