Liverpool moved level on points with&nbsp;Manchester City and Arsenal at the top of the Premier League as Mohamed Salah extended his scoring streak at Anfield with a double in a 3-0 win over Brentford on Sunday.

The Egyptian took his tally for the season to 12, nine of which have come at Anfield, as Liverpool continued their perfect record at home this season.

Nine of Salah's goals have come from Darwin Nunez assists and the Uruguayan played provider to break the deadlock after being frustrated in front of goal earlier in the first half.

Twice Nunez had the ball in the net only to be ruled offside.

But his clever pass into Salah was met with a calm finish into the far corner to open the floodgates on 39 minutes.

Salah is the first player ever to score in each of Liverpool's first six home league games of a season.

Brentford had their chances as Alisson Becker was needed to make great saves to deny Ethan Pinnock and Bryan Mbeumo.

However, there was no way back for the Bees once Salah was left unmarked to head in Kostas Tsimikas' cross to the back post on the hour mark.

Diogo Jota then fired in the third 16 minutes from time as Liverpool made it nine wins and 27 goals from nine games at Anfield in all competitions this season.

City can restore their three-point lead at the top of the table when the champions travel to Chelsea later on Sunday.

Aston Villa made it 13 consecutive home wins in the Premier League as Unai Emery's side eased past Fulham 3-1.

Antonee Robinson's own goal and a sweet strike from outside the box by Villa captain John McGinn put the hosts in command by half-time.

Victory lifts Villa up to fifth and within a point of the top four.

West Ham snapped their streak of three consecutive Premier League defeats with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest.

Lucas Paqueta's fine strike had given the Hammers a perfect start after three minutes, but they needed to rely on their threat from set-pieces to turn the game around in the second half.

Goals either side of the break from Taiwo Awoniyi and Anthony Elanga had put Forest 2-1 up.

However, two James Ward-Prowse corners were headed in by Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek to ease any rising pressure on David Moyes.

Brighton may have enjoyed famous back-to-back victories over Ajax in the Europa League, but the Seagulls struggles domestically go on after Sheffield United snatched a 1-1 draw from the Amex.

Roberto De Zerbi's men were in complete control as Simon Adingra opened the scoring.

But Brighton were forced to see out the final 20 minutes with 10 men when Mahmoud Dahoud was sent-off and the Blades took advantage to level through Adam Webster's own goal.

Premier League: Mohamed Salah extends scoring streak to send Liverpool joint top

VAR was supposed to help cut out egregious and costly refereeing mistakes but the technology has come under heavy fire from Premier League managers who have lost faith in the system.&nbsp;

The video assistant referee was introduced in the 2019/20 season for "clear and obvious errors" or "serious missed incidents" in specific situations.

The promise was that it would lead to "more correct and fairer judgements", even though the Premier League conceded that 100 percent accuracy was impossible.

But feelings are running high after high-profile incidents that have overshadowed the action on the pitch.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta launched a blistering attack on the decision to let Newcastle's goal stand after his team's 1-0 defeat last weekend, labelling it a "disgrace".

Anthony Gordon's second-half goal was checked for three separate VAR offences but survived them all to earn Newcastle the three points.

"We didn't deserve to lose the match," Arteta told Sky Sports. "We lost the match because of the clear and obvious decisions. It's embarrassing. A disgrace."

The Spaniard's comments were made in the heat of the moment but the club came out strongly in support of their manager in a statement the following day.

"Arsenal Football Club wholeheartedly supports Mikel Arteta's post-match comments after yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors on Saturday evening," Arsenal said.

<h2>'Sporting integrity'</h2>

The angry fallout after the game at St James' Park echoed another VAR controversy in the high-stakes fixture between Tottenham and Liverpool in late September.

Officials wrongly disallowed a goal from Luis Diaz after a misunderstanding over the on-field decision and Spurs went on to win 2-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Referees body Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) released the audio of the decision that led to the disallowed Diaz goal.&nbsp;

In the recording, video assistant referee Darren England says the check is "perfect" before swearing when he realises a mistake has been made. "They've restarted the game. Can't do anything, can't do anything," he adds in exasperation.

PGMOL admitted a "significant human error" and Liverpool issued a statement in which they said "sporting integrity" had been undermined.

"We fully accept the pressures that match officials work under but these pressures are supposed to be alleviated, not exacerbated, by the existence and implementation of VAR," the club said.

Manager Jurgen Klopp even called for the game to be replayed.

Wolves have far more cause for complaint, with four high-profile penalty decisions going against them, potentially with far-reaching consequences.

Arteta stuck to his guns before Arsenal's Champions League match against Sevilla this week, suggesting it was the duty of managers to discuss the issues around the use of VAR.

"Errors are part of evolution," he said. "The trajectory is never going to be (always upwards), there are always going to be bumps in the road and these things are necessary to improve the game in the right way.

"But we have to talk loudly. If you have a problem and you put it in your drawer, the problem is in the drawer and it's going to stink at some point."&nbsp;

League Managers Association chief executive Richard Bevan says coaches want to see changes -- including the video assistant referee working with the same referee each week.

"PGMOL have confirmed to us that they are actively looking at how best to incorporate VARs into match-day refereeing teams, to ensure the dynamic between on-field referee and VAR is conducive to producing positive outcomes," Bevan told the Daily Mail.

"The managers are also calling for a review (and simplification) of the interpretation of the term 'clear and obvious' in VAR decision-making, as this is a cause of much confusion at present."

Henry Winter, chief football writer for The Times, urged the Premier League to listen to the managers of its clubs.

"Anyone who attends a game or watches on television knows that VAR has never been&nbsp;more contentious," he said.

"Some grown-up debate is required. The starting point is that, love it or loathe it, VAR is here to stay.&nbsp;

"We live in a technological age and other sports have embraced it successfully, so it's about English football getting it right."

Football: Liverpool forward Luis Diaz's father released by Colombia's ELN guerrilla group

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has said he stands by his statements, made in the aftermath of the Premier League match against Newcastle last week. Arteta's comment comes after the Football Association (FA) wrote to him and requested his and the club's observations over the VAR call.&nbsp;

Speaking on the eve of his team's Champions League match against Sevilla, Arteta insisted it was his duty to defend the club.

"I reflected very openly how I felt the team played, and how the game was conditioned by the decisions which were made," said Arteta.&nbsp;

"It's my duty to defend my players, support my players, defend my club, support my club, in the best possible way. It's what I'm going to do time after time," he added.&nbsp;

Quizzed if his outburst on the weekend was related solely to events at St James' Park or a build up of decisions, Arteta said: "These things don't happen overnight. When I was that clear and had the evidence for the words I used in the media, it's because I feel strongly about it."

<h2>What happened in the match?</h2>

During the match, in the 64th minute, Joelinton&nbsp;jumped over Gabriel in the Arsenal penalty box which allowed Anthony Gordon to slot the ball past a diving David Raya.&nbsp;

However, during the VAR check, the referees looked at the possibility of the ball having gone out of play, Joelinton fouling Gabriel and Gordon being offside after goalkeeper David Raya came off his line.&nbsp;

After a good four-minute delay, VAR concluded it didn't have conclusive proof to overturn the on-field call. The decision left Arteta fuming as none of the three fouls went his team's way.

<h2>Absolute disgrace: Arteta&nbsp;</h2>

During the post-match interview, a visibly frustrated Arteta pulled no punches and gave the FA and Professional Game Match Officials Limite (PGMOL) his piece of mind.&nbsp;

“Embarrassing, it’s an absolute disgrace, that’s what it is: a disgrace," said Arteta, before adding:&nbsp;“There’s so much at stake, we’ve put in so many hours to compete at the highest level and you cannot imagine the amount of messages we’ve had saying this cannot continue. It’s embarrassing."

The loss had significant ramifications as Arsenal slipped from third spot to fourth, behind Liverpool. With the top-6 teams bunched up and teams losing titles by one point at the end of the season for the last few seasons, every point is critical and that may have triggered Arteta's outburst.&nbsp;

Mikel Arteta refuses to backtrack on his VAR comments as FA writes letter

The Premier League witnessed a resolute performance on Monday (Nov 6) night as the only unbeaten team in the league Tottenham Hotspur were condemned to their first defeat of the season. Down to 10 men, the Lillywhites were outclassed 4-1 by a returning Mauricio Pochettino who led Chelsea to the win. However, the referees were yet again in the centre of attention after Christian Romero was sent off in the first half while sparking debate in the process. However, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou defended the referee’s decision despite his side ending up on the wrong side of the result.

<h2>Postecoglou defends decision</h2>

"Decisions are decisions: you either accept it or you don't," Postecoglou told Sky Sports.

"Some of it is self-inflicted [but] if we are going to go out and complain about bad decisions every week what will happen is what happened today: a forensic study of every decision.

"I think that's the way the game is going. I don't like it - I could be a lone voice as I'm told that's the way forward. With VAR intervention it just felt like a lot of standing around.

"At some point, we have to accept the referee's decision. This constant erosion of referees' authority, this is what the game is going to get: they will not have any authority, it is going to get diminished and we are going to be in the control of someone a few miles away watching a TV screen,” added the Australian gaffer.

The defeat for Spurs was their first of the season as they now sit second in the league table on 26 points in 11 matches. They along with Arsenal were the only team to have not tasted defeat in the league before the start of the weekend. While Spurs had Romero sent off, they were later down to nine men when Destiny Udogie also got his marching orders.

The win for Chelsea also saw them get 15 points with manager Pochettino leading his side to fourth win of the season. However, they found it hard to break the Tottenham backline despite being at an advantage of two men.

Spurs next take on Wolves on Saturday at the Molineux before facing Aston Villa and Manchester City in the Premier League. Chelsea on the other hand take on City before facing Newcastle and Brighton.

Premier League: Ange Postecoglou defends refereeing decision in Chelsea defeat, says 'decisions are decisions'

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has shot down his team's struggles against breaking a nine-men Tottenham Hotspur side during their Premier League encounter on Monday (Nov 6).&nbsp;

Speaking to reporters after the match,&nbsp;Pochettino recalled the Liverpool vs Tottenham game from September where the Merseyside team was also reduced to nine-man and nearly walked away with a victory, if it wasn't for a wrongly chalked-out goal by VAR and an own goal from Joel Matip.&nbsp;

"I think you are wrong. If you watch Tottenham versus Liverpool, they (Spurs) scored in the last minute. It's never easy [against a team with] two players sent off," said Pochettino.&nbsp;

"It's difficult now to talk about tactics but most important is the 4-1 win and three points. I think we deserved to win. We forced them to make too many mistakes," he added.&nbsp;

While Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota were sent off in the Liverpool game, the home side on Monday was left without the services of Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie.&nbsp;

Spurs started the game by seizing the advantage in the sixth minute via a deflected goal from Dejan Kulusevski. However, that was to be the only positive for the London-based team as Chelsea dominated from thereon.&nbsp;

"Tottenham was better in the first 15 minutes and then I think we bossed the game, our performance was good and forced them into making mistakes. If you look at everything you could see during the game, I think it was fair. It could be an important three points for us, to help us now start to push up the table."

<h2>Chelsea vs Spurs&nbsp;high press</h2>

Despite having the lion's share of possession and the numerical advantage, Chelsea found it difficult to beat the high-press set by Ange Postecoglou. Pochettino's strikers repeatedly strayed offside and it wasn't until the 75th minute that the Blues finally managed to beat the suicidal Spurs trap.&nbsp;

Nicolas Jackson hit a hattrick to complete the victory and take Chelsea&nbsp;to the 10th spot in the points table. Meanwhile, the loss meant that Spurs ceded their top position to Manchester City.&nbsp;

While the loss may have stung Postecoglou's men, it is the absence of Romero, Udogie and perhaps James Maddison and&nbsp;Micky van de Ven in the upcoming matches that will trouble them more. With the match against City scheduled after the international break, Spurs would hope that its bench strength could carry the momentum gained since the beginning of the season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Premier League: 'You're wrong', Chelsea boss Pochettino defends his team's inability to break down 9-man Spurs

Arsenal have blasted the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) and backed manager Mikel Arteta on Sunday (Nov 5) after their 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the Premier League. The contest played at St. James’ Park saw referee Stuart Atwell award a controversial goal which sparked anger for the Gunners manager. The goal would later condemn Arsenal to their first defeat of the Premier League campaign, leaving Tottenham Hotspur as the only side unbeaten in the league.

<h2>What was the incident?</h2>

In the 64th minute of the match between the two teams, Newcastle were awarded the only goal by the match officials. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR)&nbsp;had a lengthy look at the incident for three main reasons - whether the ball went out of play, a potential foul by Joelinton in the build-up, and an offside on Anthony Gordon. However, upon several checks, the on-field referee and the VAR agreed to award the goal, leaving Arteta furious in the post-match interview.

To support the manager the club released a statement, backing him with full velocity and questioning the standards of refereeing in the league.

"Arsenal Football Club wholeheartedly supports Mikel Arteta's post-match comments after yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors on Saturday evening," the statement read.

"We'd also like to acknowledge the huge effort and performance from our players and travelling supporters at St James' Park.

"The Premier League is the best league in the world with the best players, coaches, and supporters, all of whom deserve better. PGMOL urgently needs to address the standard of officiating and focus on the action which moves us all on from retrospective analysis, attempted explanations, and apologies.&nbsp;

The match also had other controversial decisions that could have seen both sides reduced to 10 men. Premier League: Arsenal blast PGMOL for referee controversy in Newcastle game

Mauricio Pochettino has reflected on the prospect of facing boos from Tottenham Hotspur fans when his Chelsea side face his former London team.&nbsp;Pochettino said he will take whatever the Tottenham fans deliver in his stride.

The decision by Pochettino to join his former club's&nbsp;fierce cross-city rivals has not gone down well with a section of supporters at the&nbsp;Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, Pochettino said it wasn't him that severed ties with the club.&nbsp;

"I am going to accept what they will show. I didn’t decide to leave. We parted ways because I was sacked. It’s not a criticism of the club...but we didn’t decide to leave. Maybe we would still be there," said Pochettino.

Despite Pochettino's move to Stamford Bridge, it is worth noting that the Argentine had an outstanding five and a half years at Spurs. Under his tenure, Spurs left the ignominy of a mid-table club and turned into a top-four competitor whilst coming perilously close to a Champions League trophy.&nbsp;

<h2>Pochettino lauds Daniel Levy</h2>

The Chelsea boss recalled his working relationship with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and recalled how he texted him.&nbsp;

“Daniel is really clever. It is amazing, the job he is doing for Tottenham. You see Tottenham 20 years ago and now, how it changed, how it moved on. You need to recognise his job.”

"He sent a text when I signed here, wishing the best to me and to everyone. We need to be natural. Nearly six years working together. How many things happened in six years? Good and not so good! We cannot forget our relationship now."

'I was sacked...': Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino ahead of return to Tottenham Hotspur

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was incensed after his side suffered a 1-0 defeat against Newcastle at St. James' Park on Saturday (Nov 5) evening. Arteta labelled the defeat a 'disgrace' after Anthony Gordon's tap-in goal stood despite the Video Assistant&nbsp;Referee (VAR) checking the goal for three possible fouls.&nbsp;

Speaking after the match, Arteta did not hold back and called out VAR and the officials associated with it for not chalking off the goal. Gordon's goal meant that Arsenal suffered their first defeat in the Premier League this season.&nbsp;

“It’s not acceptable, there’s too much at stake. I don’t want to be in the hands of these people. I don’t know how to feel. I’m wasting my time, we are wasting our time."

With the match evenly poised after a competitive first half, Newcastle drew the first blood in the 64th minute when a cross from near the byline found its way in the six-yard box inside the Arsenal's goal. While Joelinton jumped over Gabriel, the ball ricocheted near Gordon who reacted first and tapped the ball home to gain the victory.&nbsp;

However, during the VAR check, the referees looked at the possibility of the ball having gout of play, Joelinton fouling Gabriel and Gordon being offside after goalkeeper David Raya came off his line.&nbsp;

<h2>Arteta left fuming</h2>

After a good four-minute delay, VAR concluded it didn't have conclusive proof to overturn the on-field call. The decision left Arteta fuming as none of the three fouls went his team's way.&nbsp;

"I've been 20 years in this country and now I feel ashamed. It's a disgrace and there's too much at stake here. We are trying to do incredible things and be at the highest level each week."

With the loss. Arsenal have slipped to third on the points table and could tumble to fourth by the end of the match week if Liverpool manage to beat Luton Town, later on Sunday. VAR, however, has once again become the centre of controversy. 'Absolute disgrace': Mikel Arteta left fuming after dodgy VAR decision goes against Arsenal

AC Milan in a statement has said the Serie A club was unaware of its former player Sandro Tonali's gambling addiction which has resulted in a 10-month ban imposed on the Italian.

AC Milan in a statement has said the Serie A club was unaware of its former player Sandro Tonali's gambling addiction which has resulted in a 10-month ban imposed on the Italian. "We first learnt about Tonali’s addiction through media reports and what we know is only what we read. We don’t know anything else," the club said. Milan releasing the statement comes after Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth revealed the club had launched an internal investigation into why they did not know about the player's gambling issues before they signed him. “It was a massive shock, a massive surprise. Dealing with it was new to all of us. It came from nowhere,” Ashworth was quoted as saying by DailyMail. “He was a big signing for us. We didn’t expect it. You look at yourself. Could I have done better? Could we have known? Should we have known? You look at your processes," he added. Ashworth said he could not comment on Newcastle launching a legal action against Milan after the Italian club sold its captain in the summer, in a record $76 million deal. Tonali's 10-month ban Last month, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) found Tonali guilty of the betting charges and imposed the penalty, which was reiterated by FIFA. "Sandro Tonali has been banned from competitive football for ten months, as effective from Friday, 27th October 2023, following illegal betting charges by the Italian Football Federation," Newcastle said conforming the decision. Tonali is reported to have cooperated with the investigation which has seen his ban reduced. According to Italian betting rules, he would have faced a suspension of three years had he not cooperated with the investigation. Also read | Newcastle United confirm Sandro Tonali's ban, reveal Italian's return date As part of the deal, eight months of his overall 18-month ban will be commuted if he participates in a "therapeutic plan and educational programme in Italy consisting of 16 commitments". AC Milan deny knowledge of Tonali's gambling addiction as Newcastle open new probe

Mauricio Pochettino believes Premier League leaders Tottenham are genuine title contenders as he braces himself for a return to his former club as Chelsea boss on Monday.

Pochettino made his name as one of the world's leading managers during his five years in charge of Spurs between 2014 and 2019.

He led the club to their first Champions League final and four consecutive top-four finishes in the Premier League.

However, the Argentine was not able to end Spurs' trophy drought that stretches back to 2008.

Current Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is off to the best start of any new manager in the Premier League after taking 26 from a possible 30 points in his first 10 games.

Spurs have not won the English top flight since 1961, but Pochettino said they have to be taken seriously as contenders.

"Ange and the coaching staff, they are doing a fantastic job and then of course very good players, very good team," said Pochettino. "You can feel they can be a contender.

"Of course it's early in the season but they are showing the quality to be contenders."

It remains to be seen what kind of reception awaits Pochettino at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs had struggled badly in the time between his surprise sacking four years ago and the arrival of Postecoglou.

But his decision to return to the Premier League at a London rival has not gone down well with some sections of the Spurs support.

"The most important thing is people know that we cannot forget all that we lived together, amazing memories there," he said.

"I am going to respect the people however they are going to express (their feelings), but it's not going to change my emotion, my view, my feelings about a club that I think we spend an unbelievable journey (with).

"I am back after four years in a place that we have amazing memories, we created amazing memories together. I think it's special, I'm not going to lie."

Pochettino has not enjoyed such a special start to life at Stamford Bridge.

Despite another record splurge on new players in the transfer market, Chelsea sit 11th in the table, 14 points behind of Tottenham.

But the Blues could be boosted by the return of captain Reece James to the starting line-up in the Premier League for the first time since the opening weekend of the season.

James played the first hour of Wednesday's 2-0 League Cup last-16 win over Blackburn.

"I think it was good for him to start the game and to feel him there again after a few months for the team, because he is our captain and he is a very important player," added Pochettino.

"Now we need to assess him, if he’s ready or not to start on Monday."

"Of course it's early in the season but they are showing the quality to be contenders." It remains to be seen what kind of reception awaits Pochettino at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. I think it's special, I'm not going to lie." Despite another record splurge on new players in the transfer market, Chelsea sit 11th in the table, 14 points behind of Tottenham.

German prosecutors said Friday they have opened an investigation against Mainz player Anwar El Ghazi over his social media posts on the Israel-Hamas war.

Prosecutors said the Dutch footballer is suspected of "disturbing public peace by condonning criminal acts in conjunction with incitement to hatred" through his message on Instagram.

El Ghazi had shared several posts on social media early in the conflict, including one that carried the phrase "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" -- a slogan interpreted by some as a call for the destruction of Israel, while others say it appeals for equality for Israelis and Palestinians.

El Ghazi was suspended by Mainz on October 17 over the post but the club later said the player could return after he "explicitly distanced himself" from the statements.

But El Ghazi on Wednesday took to social media again to say "I do not regret or have any remorse for my position.

Manchester United hit a new low on Wednesday (Nov 1) after they were defeated 3-0 by Newcastle United at Old Trafford in the League Cup. In spite of being graced by rich history and tradition, United have now lost eight of their 15 matches in all competitions, leaving them with their worst start to a campaign since 1962-63. Manager Erik ten Hag is now under the scanner after a poor start as United try to get through the torrid time.

<h2>Manchester United in the last 10 years</h2>

It has been 10 years since United last won the Premier League title when Sir Alex Ferguson led them to the record 20th title in English football. However, since Sir Alex’s retirement, the Red Devils have seen a deep form with the blue side of Manchester taking the tag of the biggest team in the land. To add further embarrassment to United’s woes, Manchester City have won the Premier League on six occasions since Sir Alex’s departure while they also imitated the latter’s biggest feat of winning a treble of Premier League, Champions League, and the FA Cup in one season.

<h2>Board issues</h2>

Frustration has been growing amongst the fans as United struggle to mount a realistic challenge on the field. Fans want the Glazers family out of the board who have owned the club since 2005 having purchased the majority shares at the club. The club was put on sale in 2022 with two key bidders Qatar's Sheikh Jassim and British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe of the INEOS Group leading the race. However, with no bidder matching the expected price by the Glazers family, the club’s sale has been dragged for a long time.

As things stand, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has bought 25 percent shares at the club and is expected to look at the administration on-field. His experience of handling the football side of things is expected to ease the pressure on the field. Ratcliffe currently owns French football club Nice which could come in handy for United’s board stability.

With board issues on offer, United’s issues are highlighted with their final position in the league table. Since 2014, United have finished outside the top four on five occasions and has seen them miss out on the Champions League football often. Interestingly, their defeat to City rivals Manchester City in Sunday’s derby has seen them slump to 34 Premier League losses since Sir Alex’s departure. It is the same number of Premier League matches he lost in 26 years in charge of the club.

<h2>Discipline issues</h2>

In August 2021, Manchester United brought back Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus, a move supposed to spark the revival of the club. United had finished second in the league in the previous season and were expected to challenge Manchester City for the title. However, poor form in the 2021-22 season saw them finish sixth and miss out on the Champions League. Ronaldo openly spoke on his issues with Ten Hag, resulting in his contract being terminated by the club.

The Ronaldo saga was the series start of the Ten Hag downfall despite United finishing in the top three in the 2022-23 season. At the start of the 2023-24 season, Jadon Sancho fell out of favour for a reported spat with the manager. The England winger was frozen out to the extent that he is currently not allowed to enter the first-team canteen. To make matters worse, United winger Antony was summoned by Brazilian police for violent conduct with a girlfriend. He was out of first-team action and the club had to release the statement in this case.

<h2>Poor recruitment</h2>

In the 2021 summer transfer window, United’s move for Ronaldo was supposed to spark their revival, but instead, it was one of the poor Premier League transfers of all time. The same window also saw them acquire Sancho, another player who is not featuring for the club. While not all signings work, the board has recruited a series of flops at the club which includes Angel de Maria, Alexis Sanchez, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and others. They were also a victim of their own success as a club they got players who have passed their peak including Jonny Evans.

Ten Hag’s system has also been a huge issue for the club on the field as they try to play from the back but lack the kind of players needed. Andre Onana looks like a reflection of his own and has produced poor form on the field. Stripping Harry Maguire of the captaincy may have been a good decision, but Ten Hag may have made a move too early to stamp his authority on the club.

In the Premier League standings, at the time of writing United sat eighth in the table with 15 points. They have won five matches and lost five and alongside Manchester City remain the only team yet to draw a match in the current season. They have so far conceded 16 goals and scored 11, which sees them occupy a negative goal difference.

EXPLAINED | Why Manchester United are struggling under Erik ten Hag in 2023-24 season

Manchester United and England legend Bobby Charlton died after an accidental fall at a care home, an inquest was told on Wednesday.

Charlton, one of English football's all-time greats, passed away aged 86 in Macclesfield General Hospital on October 21.

The Cheshire Coroner's Court inquest into the 1966 World Cup winner's death revealed he lost his balance when he stood up from a chair, striking a window sill and "possibly a radiator"

Charlton was living in The Willows in Knutsford, a nursing home caring for patients with dementia, after he was diagnosed with the disease in 2020.

Staff performed a full-body check on Charlton, noted no visible injuries and initially found his mobility seemed unaffected.

But they later saw swelling on his back and paramedics were called to take him to hospital.

Tests showed Charlton had fractured his ribs and was likely to develop pneumonia, with doctors deciding he should be put on end-of-life care before his death five days later.

It was heard that Charlton was "unsteady on his feet, especially when standing from a seated position" as a result of his living with dementia.

A survivor of the 1958 Munich air crash which killed eight of his United team-mates, Charlton helped his team win two league titles and their first European Cup in 1968.

He played 758 games and scored 249 goals for United between 1956 and 1973.

His goal tally stood as a club record until 2017 when Wayne Rooney became United's all-time top goalscorer.

Charlton's life will be celebrated in a memorial service at Manchester Cathedral on November 13.

The procession to the service will pass by Old Trafford, where he is immortalised alongside Denis Law and George Best in the 'United Trinity' statue.

Flowers, scarves, shirts and messages have been left at the statue in tribute to Charlton since his death.

Football: Inquest reveals Manchester United legend Bobby Charlton died after accidental fall

Premier League champions Manchester City crushed arch-rivals Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday (Oct 29) as they continued to climb the ladder. The win at Old Trafford is City’s biggest win at Old Trafford since March 2014 as United’s dodgy season continued with their fifth defeat of the season. Erling Haaland’s goals on either side of the break along with Phil Foden were enough for Pep Gaurdiola’s men to take the third spot in the league on goals scored.

<h2>City rock United in derby</h2>

The 191st Manchester derby saw both sides enter positive results in the Champions League, but it was City who stamped their authority over the contest. In the 26th minute of the match, Rasmus Hojlund was caught by the eagle eye of referee Paul Tierney when he brought down Rodri. The referee was asked to consult the pitch-side monitor by VAR, upon which the penalty was confirmed. Steeped in Haaland as he made no mistake in sending the United goalkeeper wrong side to give City a 1-0 lead. They would continue to hold to the lead until halftime.

After the break, City doubled their lead five minutes into the second half with Bernardo Silva serving Haaland an easy header at the far post. There was no way back for United in the second half as the onslaught continued with City on consistent press. United had two decent chances after the break but saw Marcus Rashford come out second best as Edernson denied United a clear sight of goal.

Phil Foden then added the final touch to glory with the third goal as City registered another win under Pep at Old Trafford. He now has five wins as opposition manager at Old Trafford, more than any other manager in the Premier League’s history.

City next take on Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday before playing Young Boys in the return leg of the Champions League. United on the other hand take on Newcastle United in the League Cup as they try to bounce back from the defeat.

Liverpool star Luis Diaz's parents kidnapped in Colombia, father remains missing

Chelsea slumped to another damaging home defeat against Brentford on Saturday (Oct 28) as Eddie Nketiah hit a first Premier League hat-trick in a 5-0 win for Arsenal against struggling Sheffield United.

Chelsea slumped to another damaging home defeat against Brentford on Saturday (Oct 28) as Eddie Nketiah hit a first Premier League hat-trick in a 5-0 win for Arsenal against struggling Sheffield United. Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea appeared to have turned a corner in recent weeks, taking seven points from their three previous fixtures, but their 2-0 loss means they have just one home win from their past 13 games in the league. Ethan Pinnock took advantage of non-existent marking to head the visitors in front shortly before the hour mark at Stamford Bridge after Chelsea had failed to capitalise on their first-half dominance. Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was embarrassed in added time after joining his team's attack for a corner, failing to catch Neal Maupay in a race as he broke with the ball, allowing Bryan Mbeumo to score in an empty net to compound home fans' woes. The result means Brentford leapfrog Chelsea into 10th place in the Premier League table, pushing Pochettino's men into the bottom half. "I'm not happy and think the players also and the whole club is not happy about the run (at home)," said the Argentine manager. "It's a long time that we need to be more consistent here and very disappointed with this. We feel the responsibility that we need to change the dynamic." The former Tottenham boss said on Friday that Christopher Nkunku is nearing a comeback from the knee injury that has prevented the $63 million signing making a competitive appearance yet for his new club. On this evidence, the French international's return cannot come soon enough as Chelsea's other new striker, Nicolas Jackson, again failed to fire. "If you don't score, you need to blame ourselves," said Pochettino. "We were not nasty or clinical in front of the goal." Also read | Premier League: Mikel Arteta calls for bigger squads as Arsenal suffer double injury blow Nketiah hat-trick It was a different story for London rivals Arsenal, who roared back from 2-0 down to draw against Chelsea last week to preserve their unbeaten league record. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta shuffled his pack --including dropping captain Martin Odegaard to the bench -- for the visit of bottom club Sheffield United and Nketiah celebrated his recall to the starting line-up in style. Replacing the injured Gabriel Jesus as Arsenal's target man at the Emirates Stadium, Nketiah proved he was up to the task as a swivelled finish gave the home side a 28th-minute lead. The England forward arrowed a shot into the top corner early in the second half and completed his treble with a stunning strike from distance just before the hour mark. Substitutes Fabio Vieira and Takehiro Tomiyasu added gloss to the scoreline with a penalty and a close-range finish as Arsenal moved up to second in the table, two points behind Tottenham, who beat Crystal Palace on Friday. "It's amazing," said Nketiah. "It's not been easy -- last month I lost my auntie so I want to dedicate these three goals to her. Her family was here watching so it is a really special moment." Bournemouth came from behind to beat fellow strugglers Burnley 2-1 and secure their first league win of the season thanks to a fine solo effort from Antoine Semenyo and a sensational lob from distance by Philip Billing late in the game. Newcastle, who have won four of their past five league games, take on Wolves in the late kick-off. Football: Chelsea stumble again, Arsenal blast 5 past Sheffield United

Mikel Arteta called on the Premier League to consider increasing squad sizes as the Arsenal boss revealed on Friday that Gabriel Jesus and Thomas Partey could be out of action for several weeks.

Jesus, 26, suffered a suspected hamstring injury in the midweek Champions League win at Sevilla while 30-year-old Partey is absent after sustaining a muscle injury.

"The scan shows that there is a muscle injury (for Jesus) and we might lose him for a few weeks again," Arteta told a press conference.

"With Gabby I cannot give you any timeframe because he always surprises us, but there is something there.

"He felt it in a really awkward action and it's true he's had quite a lot of load in the last few weeks with the national team and then playing those games, which he hasn't done in a long, long time. That's really bad news for us."

Arteta said the club did not yet know the extent of Partey's injury.

"He has more tests today but he picked up that injury in a training session with the last kick of the ball before Sevilla, so very unfortunate," he added.

The Arsenal boss believes expanding squad sizes beyond the current limit of 25 could take the pressure off players.

From next season, every side that qualifies for the Champions League will play at least eight matches, while from 2025 there will be an expanded 32-team Club World Cup.

"If we have more games, more competitiveness and physically the standards are higher -- by playing more minutes -- we have to do that (increase the squad size) or instead of five subs, we have 10," he said on the eve of his team's match against bottom club Sheffield United.

"The five subs is now something normal but it was a big fight to go from three to five. I cannot imagine the game in the conditions we are in today after last year and the World Cup without five subs, it would be so difficult.

"If the calendar extends, for sure we would have to think of not dropping the quality. The only way to do it is players have to have certain availability and you need players to pick."

The unbeaten Gunners, last season's runners-up, are third in the Premier League table after nine matches, two points behind leaders Tottenham.

Premier League: Mikel Arteta calls for bigger squads as Arsenal suffer double injury blow

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has undergone surgery on the shoulder injury he suffered while playing for Scotland.

Robertson sustained the damage in a collision with Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon during Scotland's Euro 2024 qualifying defeat earlier in October.

The left-back, who has played eight league games and scored one goal for Liverpool this season, was replaced by Kostas Tsimikas for last Saturday's Merseyside derby win against Everton.

He faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was unable to pin-point an exact date for his return to action.

"Robbo had surgery and all went well, as good as it could be, so the recovery starts after he wakes up," Klopp told reporters on Wednesday.

"I think it happened this morning. That's it. We don't know how long it will take or whatever, but the first step is done, that's good."

Klopp could make widespread changes for the visit of Toulouse to Anfield in Group E of the Europa League on Thursday.

But Klopp does not intend to take the French side for granted despite their limited European pedigree.

"Toulouse deserve all our respect. It is a really interesting story, winning the (French) Cup last year," he said.

"It was a massive thing. They are a young team, a talented team, you see them playing really nice football and they have a clear idea.

"They got a point against PSG and it was a massive one so we have to make sure we are really ready. Then it is about us. We have to create an atmosphere through the way we play."

Liverpool would go five points clear in the group with a win, leaving them firmly on track for the knockout stages.

"We want to win football games and this is the next opportunity," Klopp said.

"A win would bring us to nine points with Toulouse on four, but knowing that changes nothing. We have to play our best. We will make a few changes but not too much.

"The boys have shown they are really ready for the competition. That's what I wanted to see."

Cody Gakpo could return for Liverpool after the Dutch forward recovered from a knee injury sustained in the 2-1 defeat at Tottenham in September.

"Cody is in full training now since Sunday, which means he is available for the squad. Whatever we do with that we will have to see, but that's good as well," Klopp said.

Everton face a 12-point deduction after an investigation into alleged breaches of financial rules by the Premier League club, according to a report on Wednesday.

The Daily Telegraph said Premier League chiefs have asked an independent commission to impose the severe sanction, which would be the largest points penalty in the history of the competition.

Losing 12 points would leave Everton on minus-five points at the bottom of this season's table.&nbsp;

Sean Dyche's side are currently in 16th place with seven points after losing six of their first nine games.

The Premier League referred Everton to the commission in March over an alleged breach of its profitability and sustainability rules over a period ending with the 2021-22 season.

Top-flight clubs are permitted to lose a maximum of £105 million ($127 million) over a three-year period or face sanctions.

Everton said in a statement issued on the day that news of the referral was confirmed: "The club strongly contests the allegation of non-compliance and together with its independent team of experts is entirely confident that it remains compliant with all financial rules and regulations.

Everton have recorded annual losses for five consecutive years, more than £430 million in total over the period.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright has died aged 78 after a battle with cancer, the Premier League club announced on Tuesday.

"Everton Football Club is in mourning following the death of chairman Bill Kenwright, who passed away peacefully last night aged 78, surrounded by his family and loved ones," the club reported.

Kenwright, who succeeded Phillip Carter as chairman in 2004 after first joining the board at Goodison Park in 1989, passed away following surgery to have a cancerous tumour removed from his liver in August.

Liverpool-born Kenwright, who was married to British actor Jenny Seagrove, was a successful theatre impresario and film producer when he joined the Everton board in 1989.

"The club has lost a chairman, a leader, a friend, and an inspiration," Everton added.

"The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Everton are with his partner Jenny Seagrove, his daughter Lucy Kenwright, grandchildren and everybody who knew and loved him."

Kenwright bought a majority 68-percent stake in the club in 1999 and became deputy chairman before replacing Carter at the helm.

In June this year, Everton owner Farhad Moshiri announced he had asked Kenwright to remain as chairman and help the club through a "period of transition".

Kenwright had come under pressure from a section of fans who protested at how the club was being run.

Everton narrowly avoided relegation last season and are just three points above the relegation places so far this season.

It was announced last month that a deal to sell the club to American investment firm 777 Partners had been agreed.

"The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Everton are with his partner Jenny Seagrove, his daughter Lucy Kenwright, grandchildren and everybody who knew and loved him." Kenwright bought a majority 68-percent stake in the club in 1999 and became deputy chairman before replacing Carter at the helm. ALSO READ | CWC '23: Is Babar Azam under captaincy pressure? Pakistan skipper reveals post Afghanistan loss In June this year, Everton owner Farhad Moshiri announced he had asked Kenwright to remain as chairman and help the club through a "period of transition". Kenwright had come under pressure from a section of fans who protested at how the club was being run. Everton narrowly avoided relegation last season and are just three points above the relegation places so far this season. It was announced last month that a deal to sell the club to American investment firm 777 Partners had been agreed. Premier League: Everton chairman Bill Kenwright dies aged 78

Aston Villa climbed to within two points of the Premier League lead as Douglas Luiz struck twice in a 4-1 win over West Ham on Sunday.

Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey were also on target as Unai Emery's men recorded an 11th consecutive home Premier League win.

Villa have been transformed in just over a year since Emery took charge and showed why they harbour ambitions to qualify for the Champions League for the first time this season.

Luiz is just one of a number of players that are performing at a different level under the Spaniard and continued his scoring streak at Villa Park.

The Brazilian became the first Villa player to score in six consecutive home Premier League games when his strike from the edge of the box had too much power for Alphonse Areola in the West Ham goal on 30 minutes.

Emery's men arguably deserved to lead by more than a single goal at half-time.

But Luiz took the chance to double his side's advantage from the penalty spot early in the second period after Edson Alvarez tripped Ezri Konsa.

Jarrod Bowen reduced West Ham's arrears just five minutes later when his shot spun off Pau Torres into the far corner for his 100th career goal.

However, any hope of a Hammers' fightback was snuffed out by the in-form Watkins.

Fresh from scoring the winner against Australia for England in a rare run out at international level as Harry Kane's understudy, Watkins blasted in his eighth goal of the season from a narrow angle.

Bailey then exemplified the impressive attacking arsenal that Villa have amassed in recent transfer windows.

The Jamaican was left on the bench as Nicolo Zaniolo started despite being the subject of an investigation from Italian prosecutors over a betting scandal.

But Bailey made the most of his 15 minutes on the field as he cut inside Nayef Aguerd with a step over and fired into the top corner.

Villa climb up to fifth in the table, but within striking distance of leaders Manchester City.

Premier League: Aston Villa thrash West Ham 4-1 to close on top four; Watkins, Bailey impress

Manchester City beat Brighton 2-1 on Saturday to return to the Premier League summit and end Liverpool's brief stay at the top after their victory in the Merseyside derby.

Mohamed Salah scored twice as Jurgen Klopp's men beat 10-man Everton 2-0 in the early kick-off at Anfield, extending their dominance over their struggling neighbours.

But champions City put their recent wobble behind them as they saw off high-flying Brighton thanks to goals from Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland.

Arsenal can become the fourth team to top the table on Saturday if they beat Chelsea in the early evening kick-off.

Liverpool had fortune on their side at home.

Everton's Ashley Young was sent off before half-time for two bookable offences, while Ibrahima Konate escaped a second booking in the second half with the game still goalless.

Liverpool struggled to make their man advantage count, but finally achieved the breakthrough 15 minutes from time when Salah smashed home from the penalty spot after Michael Keane handled.

Salah was then teed up by Darwin Nunez to make the points safe deep into stoppage time.

Everton manager Sean Dyche was angry about the decision not to send Konate off.

"I have no clue how he didn't feel it was a bookable offence," he said.

"I like to think there are a lot of fair-minded people here today who are stunned that wasn't a second yellow card."

Even Klopp said he could understand Everton's frustration at a lack of consistency from referee Craig Pawson.

But the three points mean the Reds have lost just one of their last 29 Merseyside derbies and remain unbeaten at Anfield in front of a crowd against Everton since 1999.

City, who had lost their previous two league games, dominated the first half of their match at the Etihad against Brighton, taking the lead through Alvarez in the seventh minute.

Jeremy Doku was the creator as he reached the byline and pulled back for Alvarez to tuck home his seventh of the season from 12 yards.

Haaland ended his brief goal drought by doubling City's lead 12 minutes later, driving home a fierce left-footed shot from just outside the area.

But it was a different story after the break and Brighton pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute.

Moments after Alvarez failed with an attempt to catch Jason Steele off his line, the ball was quickly sent upfield and, after Kaoru Mitoma's attempted pass was blocked, Ansu Fati tucked home.

City defender Manuel Akanji was sent off in the closing minutes but they held on to win despite late pressure.

Newcastle, whose early-season struggles are now a distant memory, romped to a 4-0 win against sorry Crystal Palace, with goals from Jacob Murphy, Anthony Gordon, Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson.

The win, their fourth in five Premier League matches, lifts Eddie Howe's men to fifth in the Premier League.

Elsewhere, Brentford beat Burnley 3-0 while Wolves came from behind to beat Bournemouth 2-1 thanks to a late winner from Sasa Kalajdzic.

Luton recovered from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 against Nottingham Forest.

Manchester United play bottom club Sheffield United in the late kick-off, with Old Trafford in mourning over the death of club great Bobby Charlton.

Tottenham, who started the day at the top, are not in action until Monday, when they host Fulham.

Legendary Manchester United former and England former player Sir Bobby Charlton has passed away at 86 on Saturday (Oct 21). He was also a survivor of the 1958 Munich air disaster when a bulk of United players lost their lives in a tragic accident in Germany.

“Manchester United are in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club. A graduate of Manchester United’s famous youth academy, Sir Bobby played 758 games and scored 249 goals during 17 years as a Manchester United player, winning the European Cup, three league titles, and the FA Cup. For England, he won 106 caps and scored 49 goals, and won the 1966 World Cup. Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali could face a long&nbsp;ban from football after admitting to betting-related offenses on Wednesday (Oct 18). The case comes from his time with AC Milan where admitted to multiple betting breaches while playing for the club. The Newcastle star was interrogated by the Turin prosecutor's office for almost three hours on Wednesday while he admitted to the offenses. He along with fellow Premier League star Nicolò Zaniolo were dropped from the recent Italian squad after being on the radar&nbsp;of the authorities.

<h2>Tonali admits offences</h2>

According to the Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport, Tonali admitted to the offence of also placing bets on his own team. This has complicated matters for the Newcastle player who was the club’s record acquisition in the summer. Italian betting rules are strict in case a player is found guilty of placing such deals on his own team. This could result in Tonali facing a longer ban than three years while the club could be on the receiving end of things.

In case Tonali is found guilty of betting on matches in which he has participated, he could be sanctioned under the match-fixing rules. However, the 23-year-old has claimed he did not place bets on Milan matches where he was playing. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is deeply looking into the matter as the star player faces an uncertain future.

On the player side, his agent has claimed that he suffers from a gambling addiction that could result in mandatory therapy sessions instead of a ban. Currently, Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli has been sanctioned for similar offences having been found guilty. Fagioli was sentenced to a seven-month ban plus a fine and therapy on Tuesday.

The FIGC is also looking into matters surrounding the illegal betting platforms which could result in Tonali facing more sanctions. As things stand, he will be available for this week’s Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace for Newcastle. However, if the investigation moves at a rapid pace, he could be sanctioned sooner rather than later.

Premier League record goalscorer Alan Shearer has slammed Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk for his comments that modern footballers were playing far too many games. Shearer called Van Dijk's comments 'nonsense', adding that players were well compensated for them to be complaining about the workload.&nbsp;

"Nonsense. Nonsense. Players are playing too much football? What? I mean come on. I know you should never mention the money, but you've got bigger squads than ever, more substitutes than ever, getting paid more money than ever, you've got the best physios, the best technology, the best of everything," said Shearer.&nbsp;

"Do me a favour, playing too much football? F***ing hell. Didn't he say it was England that play too much football? International football I get and understand. We all know why they're doing it, they're doing it for financial reasons. But here in England, you can tell I don't really agree with that."

<h2>What did the Dutch player&nbsp;say?</h2>

The Netherlands captain last week expressed concerns about the increasing workload&nbsp;the players were facing whilst adding that he was not interested in giving up any pay in order to see games slashed from the schedule.&nbsp;

“In England, we believe the schedules are too busy. The players are getting paid well but it should never come at the cost of our health. We keep having to play more and more games," said Van Dijk.&nbsp;

"We should start saying something about it, contribute to a solution. No, I am not prepared to give up 10 per cent [of his salary]. I don’t think that should depend on my salary."&nbsp;

Apart from Van Dijk, France international Raphael Varane also spoke up about the congested fixtures list recently and slammed authorities for ignoring player concerns.

“From the managers and players, we have shared our concerns for many years now that there are too many games, the schedule is overcrowded, and it’s at a dangerous level for players physical and mental wellbeing,” Varane said on X, formerly known as Twitter, after Premier League decided to add the exact time lost in goal celebrations, substitutions or injuries to the stoppage time.&nbsp;

“Despite our previous feedbacks, they have now recommended for next season: longer games, more intensity, and less emotions to be shown by players,” the World Cup winner said.

While Shearer has a point, the likes of Van Dijk, Varane and other top footballers are forced to play over 60 games a season if their team goes the distance in all tournaments. With football requiring much greater intensity compared to Shearer's playing days, the frequency of injuries has also gone up substantially, despite modern medical science working wonders.&nbsp;

Kane said he was keeping a close eye on the proceedings in the Premier League, adding,&nbsp;"there's still a long way to go, but as the manager said, there's no reason why the fans shouldn't be excited and happy with the way things are going. Hopefully, they can continue".&nbsp;

Kane, who is set to captain England against Australia at Wembley on Friday&nbsp;asserted that despite Spurs' excellent start to the campaign, he doesn't lament his move to German titleholders.&nbsp;

"I was there for so long and all my friends are still there, even the coaches and staff, so sometimes it's a little bit strange. But in football and life, when you go onto a new adventure, you're focused and attention is on that."

<h2>Kane's move to Germany&nbsp;</h2>

Having been in Germany for a few months now, Kane is yet to find a house and has made rather slow progress in learning the language. However, Kane added that it was because his focus was on performing for his new side.&nbsp;

"I'm trying to find houses, learn the language, get to know my new team and staff at Bayern Munich. Your attention just gets taken away. Maybe at first, it was strange to see them playing and me not being there. I have got to put all my attention on Bayern Munich and to make us as successful as possible. I am here, I am excited and it will always be a decision I never regret. I’m proud to have started the way I have.”

Kane ended his 19-year association with boyhood club Spurs earlier this summer after securing a move to Bayern for a record $126 million fee. The Englishman's arrival to Bavaria has been superb, to say the least as he has&nbsp;amassed nine goals and five assists in 10 matches for Bayern across competitions.&nbsp;

Harry Kane admits it is 'bit strange' seeing Tottenham top of Premier League table

Fresh off the high of beating treble winners Manchester City, Arsenal have been seemingly dealt a blow as William Saliba pulled out of the France squad for international duty.

Fresh off the high of beating treble winners Manchester City, Arsenal have been seemingly dealt a blow as William Saliba pulled out of the France squad for international duty. The France national team confirmed the defender's absence, stating he was nursing a toe injury and that he will be replaced by Nice's Jean-Clair Todibo. "William Saliba is not able to participate in the gathering of the French team. The Arsenal defender suffers from pain in his right big toe. He will remain available to his club to treat this chronic injury," read the statement. "After speaking with Dr Franck Le Gall, the French team doctor, Didier Deschamps noted William Saliba’s withdrawal and decided to replace him with Jean-Clair Todibo. "The latter is expected at Clairefontaine on Monday at noon, like all the selected players." Saliba was instrumental in his side's 1-0 win against City on Sunday (October 8) in front of a boisterous Emirates crowd. The tall centre-back managed to keep City's goal-scoring machine Erling Haaland quiet and to the extent that the Norweigian did not have a shot on target throughout the game. The victory propelled Arsenal to the top of the points table alongside London rivals Tottenham Hotspur. The club will now return to action after the international break and face a resurgent Chelsea. With over a week to go for the encounter, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta would hope that his premier defender gets back to full fitness. Saliba - Arsenal's mainstay Ever since the last season, Saliba has been pivotal to Arsenal's chances in the league. In the 27 league games that Saliba started during the title charge, he helped Arsenal keep a clean sheet in 11 of them. However, post his injury, the London-based team could only keep two clean sheets in nine games as Manchester City came from behind to secure a third consecutive title. Last week, Saliba reflected on the injury that forced him to sit out the business end of the last season, which eventually cost his team the title. “Of course, it was really painful because I watched my team play every game, the most important of the season, and I was not able to play. Of course, it hurt me. Of course, I could have helped my team to maybe win the Premier League but we never know," said Saliba. Also read | 'It was really painful...': William Saliba on Arsenal slipping up in title race last season "It was a good experience because we were first for all the season and at the end we finished second. Every game is so important, we try to win every game to win the league. Injuries are part of football and hopefully I won’t be injured.” While Saliba has become a mainstay in the Arsenal squad, he is yet to become a first pick for Deschamps. The likes of Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate are seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:
