Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has blamed injuries for his team’s recent debacle in the Premier League after they lost to Nottingham Forest. Manchester United ended 2023 on a low as they were eliminated in the group stage of the Champions League while the 2-1 defeat to Forest on Saturday (Dec 30) was their ninth of the Premier League campaign. United have endured a chaotic campaign so far as they flirt with injuries and board changes in the hierarchy.

<h2>Ten Hag blames injuries</h2>

"The injuries. Also some issues but mainly the injuries hold us back in the process. In January we have a lot of players returning so then our levels can be higher,” Ten Hag said in the post-match on Saturday.

As things stand, United are currently missing 13 first-team players including the likes of Casemiro and Victor Lindeloff. They also have Jadon Sancho who is not in the first team, having fallen out with the manager.

United’s defeat to Forest is their ninth of the Premier League season, the same as they had in the entire of last season. They have 10 matches so far in the league while their solitary draw came against Liverpool earlier this month. They currently are seventh in the Premier League standings but could be ninth by Tuesday evening if Brighton and Newcastle win their matches.

On the off-field battle, United had several board changes with the appointment of Dave Brailsford as the new Sporting Director. He is likely to take charge in the coming days after Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos Group agreed to buy a 25% stake in Manchester United on Christmas Eve.&nbsp;

"Definitely [Dave Brailsford] will see we have our problems. You want to build on the last result but we have to change our striker,” Ten Hag added on off-field issues.

Currently, United are nine points adrift of the fourth spot, which could be more if teams above them win their games in hand. Considering their current run they will need a much-improved performance to&nbsp;reach the top four and book a place in the expanded Champions League version of the 2024-25 season.

Premier League: Erik ten Hag claims 'injuries hold us back' after Manchester United's latest defeat

Manchester City winger Jack Grealish’s house was burgled while the England star was playing in his club's Premier League match at Everton on Wednesday. &nbsp;Grealish's Cheshire mansion in north-west England was targeted by thieves as he was in action for the Premier League champions during their 3-1 victory on Merseyside.

Members of Grealish's family and his fiancee Sasha Atwood were watching the televised match at the house when they heard a disturbance, according to reports on Friday.

An alarm was raised and an emergency response was launched with a helicopter, police dogs and a number of officers sent to the property, but no suspects were detected.

It was reported the robbers made off with £1 million ($1.2 million) worth of jewellery and watches.

Grealish, 28, was informed of the raid after City's match finished.

A spokeswoman for Cheshire Constabulary said: "At around 9.50pm on Wednesday 27 December police were called to reports of a burglary.

"The caller reported that a number of items had been stolen.

"Officers, supported by the police dogs and NPAS (National Police Air Service), were deployed and searches were conducted in the local area, but there was no trace of the suspects.

"No arrests have been made at this time and enquiries are ongoing."

City manager Pep Guardiola was relieved nobody was hurt in the incident, but did not confirm if Grealish would be available for Saturday's home game against Sheffield United.

"Fortunately nothing wrong happened where the family was inside," Guardiola told reporters on Friday. "It is what it is today in the modern day, with many things happening. It was a bad moment for him and his family but, fortunately, what was not damaged were the people inside."

Arsenal missed out on the chance to return to the Premier League summit on Thursday, losing 2-0 to West Ham as Tottenham went down in a six-goal thriller at Brighton.

Mikel Arteta's Gunners were top of the tree at Christmas for a second successive year but trail leaders Liverpool by two points at the halfway point of the season.

Last year's runners-up dominated possession at the Emirates but lacked a cutting edge against the disciplined visitors, for whom Tomas Soucek and former Arsenal player Konstantinos Mavropanos scored the goals.

Soucek opened the scoring from close range in the 13th minute following a pass from Jarrod Bowen, with the goal confirmed after a lengthy VAR check looking into whether the ball had gone out of play.

Arsenal surged forward in relentless waves and West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola made a fine reaction save from a Bukayo Saka header on the half-hour.

The England winger hit the post from a tight angle as the clock ticked down towards half-time but Arsenal trailed at the break despite enjoying nearly three-quarters of possession.

The Gunners came out determined to find a response but instead they found themselves 2-0 down when Mavropanos's bullet header cannoned in off the crossbar from James Ward-Prowse's corner.

Gabriel Jesus failed to beat Areola with a header when well-placed and shortly afterwards missed another glorious opportunity with his head at the back post.&nbsp;

Arsenal continued to bombard the visitors' goal but could not find a breakthrough and it could have been worse had Said Benrahma managed to convert a late penalty.

Defeat leaves the Gunners in second place on 40 points, one clear of Aston Villa and three ahead of Manchester City, who have a game in hand.

Arteta said his team deserved more for their dominance.

"We want to be at the top and today we are very, very disappointed," he told the BBC.

"We had so much dominance in the game. We are in a really good position. Today is a disappointing night. We have to pick ourselves up for a big game against Fulham."

He added: "The players put an enormous effort in. It's a difficult dressing room right now but we have another game in 72 hours. This is football, we have to improve in certain areas."

West Ham manager David Moyes celebrated his team's rise to sixth in the table.

"We are not one of the top teams," he told Amazon Prime. "We are trying to get up and grow the team. For West Ham to be in Europe (they topped their Europa League group) is a great period."

<h2>Spurs drama</h2>

Tottenham, this season's early pacesetters, remain in fifth spot after losing 4-2 despite threatening an astonishing comeback from 4-0 down against Roberto De Zerbi's Brighton.

Jack Hinshelwood finished with brutal power to put the home side ahead following a weaving run from Joao Pedro along the edge of the penalty area.

Brighton doubled their lead from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute through Pedro, who took full advantage after Dejan Kulusevski was penalised for a pull on Welbeck.

Brazil forward Richarlison twice had the ball in the net after the break but both times he was ruled offside.

Pervis Estupinan&nbsp;stretched the lead with a thunderbolt from 30 yards in the 63rd minute and Pedro scored a second penalty 12 minutes later.

Alejo Veliz grabbed what appeared to be a consolation goal in the 81st minute but it galvanised the visitors.

Ben Davies&nbsp;headed home Pedro Porro's deep cross as Spurs threatened to cut through every time they poured forward, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg hitting the post during nine frantic minutes of stoppage time.

But Brighton withstood the intense pressure to take all three points.

"I am really lucky to be this coach of this team with these players," De Zerbi told the BBC. "I am very pleased with the passion they have, they have everything.

"You can't forget we are Brighton. Sometimes they forget we are Brighton. We are not Manchester United, Manchester City, Newcastle or Arsenal, we are still Brighton."

Premier League: Arsenal fail to return on top after loss against West Ham; Spurs lose in six-goal thriller

Injury-plagued Liverpool has been handed a boost in their battle for the Premier League title with forward Diogo Jota's return, manager Juergen Klopp said on Friday ahead of a clash against Newcastle United.

Jota, 27, missed eight matches due to a muscle injury, but made a remarkable comeback on Tuesday, coming off the bench and scoring in the 90th minute to send Liverpool to the top of the league with a 2-0 win at Burnley.

Klopp said the Portugal international's return to the side would help them remain competitive with Mohamed Salah set to miss games due to the African Cup of Nations.

"Each one of the boys is super important but Diogo especially...," Klopp told reporters ahead of the clash at Anfield. "He's a very smart footballer. He understands the game particularly well. He sees situations slightly earlier, to adapt to different things your opponent is doing. On top of that he's both-footed, a great finisher.

"He's back and I hope he's back for the next 10 years. But he missed chances as well. He comes back and scores with the first he had. But it's about coming into situations and then they all can score."

The German manager added that midfielder Alexis Mac Allister could feature against Newcastle after a spell on the sidelines.

"Macca (MacAllister) we will see what he can do today. I didn't see the doctor yet, we will see," Klopp said. "(Andy Robertson) Robbo still needs more range in his shoulder. Still not close to training or whatever."

<h2>HOWE NOT UNDER PRESSURE</h2>

Liverpool face a struggling Newcastle side who have exited the Champions League and League Cup in recent weeks and were handed a 3-1 defeat by Nottingham Forest in their last league outing.

While many or their problems can be attributed to a punishing fixture schedule and lengthy injury list, manager Eddie Howe has come under pressure to find answers for their dismal run.

Asked if he felt like there was a spotlight on him, Howe told reporters: "I feel like I'm always in the spotlight and criticism is part of this job. It goes hand in hand...

"No disrespect but I blank it out and do what I can to help the players. That won't change."

Following their tough test against Liverpool at Anfield, Newcastle's next league games are against champions Manchester City and third-placed Aston Villa.

"Tough games coming up but we relish them. We will attack it and give it our best shot...," Howe said. "We'll need to be near perfect (vs Liverpool). It's a really tough game. They've been performing at well at home, very consistent. We need to re-find our best form."

Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to visit India for the first time in February

Manchester City came from behind to beat Everton 3-1 on their return from the Club World Cup on Wednesday, moving five points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Pep Guardiola's men, chasing an unprecedented fourth consecutive English top-flight title, were in trouble when trailing 1-0 at Goodison Park, courtesy of a first-half strike from former City player Jack Harrison.

But Phil Foden fizzed a shot past Jordan Pickford in the 53rd minute and Julian Alvarez put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot.

Bernardo Silva capped a brilliant second-half performance for the champions, taking advantage of an error from Pickford in the closing minutes.

Elsewhere, Chelsea's Noni Madueke scored a late winner from the penalty spot in a 2-1 win against Crystal Palace to lift spirits at Stamford Bridge after a miserable 2023 while Wolves hammered fast-sinking Brentford 4-1.

City, who had won just one of their previous six league games, are now back in fourth spot with a game in hand over Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool, who have 42 points.

Last season's runners-up, Arsenal, two points behind Liverpool, are in action against West Ham on Thursday.

"I remind them (of their abilities) every day," Guardiola told Amazon Prime. "We have standards to keep. That makes us have more responsibility so the standards cannot go down."

He added: "They showed again how special they are. We know after six games with just one win the people were asking, which is normal because it is all about results, but we are close."

Manchester City came from behind to beat Everton 3-1 on their return from the Club World Cup on Wednesday, moving five points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Manchester City return to PL title race with comeback win over Everton

Nuno Espirito Santo clinched his first win in charge of Nottingham Forest as Chris Wood's hat-trick against his former club Newcastle inspired a 3-1 victory, while Liverpool will go top of the Premier League if they avoid defeat at Burnley later on Tuesday.

Wood left Newcastle to join Forest in a £15 million ($19 million) deal in June, but had scored only four times for his new club.

The 32-year-old New Zealand international managed just two league goals for Newcastle last term, but he surpassed that meagre total with a treble in 60 minutes at St James' Park.

Alexander Isak's first half penalty put Newcastle ahead, but Wood equalised just before the break.

He struck twice more in the second half to give former Tottenham manager Nuno his maiden victory with Forest in his second game in charge after replacing the sacked Steve Cooper.

It was Forest's first win in eight games and only their second success in their last 15 matches.

Forest moved five points clear of the relegation zone ahead of the rest of the day's matches.

Newcastle's fifth defeat in their last seven games in all competitions leaves them seven points adrift of the top four in seventh place.

Nuno's first game in charge ended in a painful 3-2 stoppage-time defeat against Bournemouth at the City Ground last weekend.

Morgan Gibbs-White fired narrowly wide in the opening minutes as Forest tried to erase the bitter taste from Nuno's first game.

But Newcastle took the lead in the 23rd minute when Sweden striker Isak was tripped in the area by Ola Aina.

Isak picked himself up to squeeze the penalty past Matt Turner for his 10th goal this season.

Anthony Elanga wasted two good chances to equalise when he fired into the side-netting and shot straight at Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka moments later when a pass to the unmarked Wood looked the better option.

<h2>Lethal Wood</h2>

Forest kept battling and Dan Burn's goalbound effort was scrambled away by the visitors' defence before they equalised in first half stoppage-time.

Making amends for his earlier mistake, Elanga was the provider as he took Gibbs-White's pass and cut back a low cross that Wood finished from close-range.

Isak should have restored Newcastle's advantage seconds later, but his header lacked the power to beat Turner.

Gibbs-White nodded inches past the post immediately after the interval.

In keeping with their lively opening to the second half, Forest snatched the lead in the 53rd minute.

Elanga was the catalyst again with a superb through-ball and Wood did the rest, twisting and turning until he had space to guide a cool finish past Dubravka.

Wood was in the mood and he completed his hat-trick on the hour, surging onto Murillo's pass and slaloming around Dubravka to slot home.

Later on Boxing Day, second placed Liverpool will climb above leaders Arsenal with a draw or win against second bottom Burnley.

Third placed Aston Villa will aim to step up their unexpected title challenge with a victory at troubled Manchester United.

In the day's other matches, Sheffield United face fellow strugglers Luton and Bournemouth host Fulham.

The deal, which will also see Ratcliffe's INEOS group take over management of the club's soccer operations, ends more than a year of uncertainty after majority owners, the Glazer family, said in November 2022 they were looking at strategic options.

The Glazers have come under heavy criticism from fans for presiding over a decline in the club's performance since former manager Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 following a period of unprecedented success.

"As a local boy and a lifelong supporter of the club, I am very pleased that we have been able to agree a deal with the Manchester United Board that delegates us management responsibility of the football operations of the club," Ratcliffe, 71, said in a statement.

"Whilst the commercial success of the club has ensured there have always been available funds to win trophies at the highest level, this potential has not been fully unlocked in recent times.

"We will bring the global knowledge, expertise and talent from the wider INEOS Sport group to help drive further improvement at the Club, while also providing funds intended to enable future investment into Old Trafford."

Ratcliffe's stake purchase at $33 per share values the 20 times English champions at $6.3 billion including debt, a source familiar with the matter said.

The club said $200 million of Ratcliffe's planned investment would be paid on closing of the deal, and a further $100 million by the end of 2024.

Qatar's Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al Thani had also looking at buying the club, but dropped out of the process, saying he would not raise his $6 billion offer

Ratcliffe's INEOS also owns French Ligue 1 club Nice, Swiss Super League side FC Lausanne-Sport, and works with Racing Club Abidjan of Ivory Coast Ligue One. It is also behind the Grenadiers, one of the world's most successful cycling teams.

"Sir Jim and INEOS bring a wealth of commercial experience as well as significant financial commitment into the club," United's executive chairs Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer said.

"And, through INEOS Sport, Manchester United will have access to seasoned high-performance professionals, experienced in creating and leading elite teams from both inside and outside the game."

Since Ferguson stepped down, United have cycled through five permanent managers and three caretakers but failed to recapture the glory days, winning one FA Cup, two League Cup trophies and a Europa League title in 11 years.

The Glazers' adamant stance on not selling the club over the years has become a source of frustration for the fans who clamoured for change and held protests as the club's net debt soared to over $600 million.

Under Dutch coach Erik ten Hag, United are eighth in the Premier League table despite a transfer outlay of nearly 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) in the last six years.

They were also knocked out of European competitions after finishing last in their Champions League group.

Playing in the top of the table clash, the North London side was given an early lead by Brazilian Gabriel in the fourth minute as the home fans were left furious. Both Liverpool and Arsenal are meeting for the first time in this Premier League season with the top spot at stake as both rivals headed into the contest having been separated by just one point.

<h2>Gabriel stuns Anfield</h2>

Having been awarded a free kick in the third minute of the match, Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard flipped in a good ball on the edge of the Liverpool penalty area. With a spring in his step, Gabriel was first to get to the ball ahead of the Liverpool defenders and nodded in a good curling ball past Alison to open the scoring. This left the Kop end stunned with Jurgen Klopp’s side on the receiving end of a good set-piece play from Mikel Arteta’s men as they led 1-0 until the 28th minute.&nbsp;

At the time of writing during the half time, the match was all square after Mohamed Salah equalised in the 30th minute. There were close chances for both teams before the half came to an end, but it remained 1-1 as both failed to convert in the final third.

Wolverhampton Wanderers continued their stellar home form to heap misery on Chelsea on Christmas eve with a 2-1 win in the Premier League on Sunday, thanks to second-half strikes from Mario Lemina and Matt Doherty.

After a goalless first half, Lemina headed in a Pablo Sarabia corner six minutes after halftime to give Wolves the lead before Doherty secured the win with a second goal in added time while Christopher Nkunku scored his first goal for Chelsea.

Wolves, who are unbeaten at home in the league since September, moved up to 11th with 22 points, level with 10th-placed Chelsea but trailing the London side on goal difference.

Chelsea have now lost four away games in a row as Mauricio Pochettino's side fell to their eighth league defeat of the season.

"We feel very disappointed because we deserve much more. We are not clinical enough. We created chances and had the possession," Pochettino said.

"It is a young team and many players are in the Premier League for the first time. They need to adapt. We need to learn from these games. We are in a position Chelsea should not be in."

Chelsea's best chance of the first half fell to Raheem Sterling who stole the ball from last man Joao Gomes and sprinted into the Wolves box with only the keeper Jose Sa to beat.

Sterling went for the finish himself despite having two team mates including Cole Palmer unmarked to his right. The shot was blocked by Sa, laying waste to the three-on-one opportunity.

Chelsea paid for their wastefulness six minutes after halftime when Lemina was left poorly marked and his header from Pablo Sarabia's corner sailed into the net.

"It's amazing, the support we have here is fantastic. I hope we can keep pushing on and making the fans happy," Lemina told Sky Sports.

Wolves doubled their lead when Benoit Badiashile failed to deal with Hugo Bueno's cross and an unmarked Matt Doherty guided his shot past Chelsea keeper Djordje Petrovic.

"(The second goal was) very important because they nicked a goal at the end. I tend to have a knack over my career of being in the right place at the right time and I slotted it away," Doherty said.

"The kind of atmosphere that's generated around the stadium. Our record against top six teams is good. We've beaten most of them here and away. We're doing really well."

Wolves down Chelsea 2-1 on Christmas Eve as Blues suffer 4th away loss in row

Arsenal ensured they will spend Christmas Day on top of the Premier League as they held title rivals Liverpool to a pulsating 1-1 draw at Anfield on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta's side took an early lead through Gabriel Magalhaes, but Mohamed Salah hauled Liverpool level before the interval.

A draw was arguably the right result after both sides flexed their muscles to show why they have emerged as the leading contenders to win the title.

Chasing a first title since 2004, Arsenal sit one point clear of second placed Liverpool heading into the festive period.

The team that has topped the Premier League at Christmas has gone on to win the title in six of the past 10 seasons, but the draw on Merseyside was also a boost to the chasing pack.

Third placed Aston Villa are level on points with Liverpool, fourth placed Tottenham are three points further back, while champions Manchester City are six points adrift of the leaders with a game in hand.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their past 11 games against Arsenal at Anfield.

However, coming a week after their goalless stalemate against Manchester United, this was another frustrating result for Jurgen Klopp's team.

"Oh my god, how strong are they? The good news is we are good as well," Klopp said.

"We pass instead of shoot, four or five times we do that, it's a lesson. But generally the game is great."

Arsenal weren't completely satisfied either.

Last season they led 2-0 at Liverpool but ended up drawing 2-2, a result that started their collapse in the title race.

Their failure to hold on this time should not have such a damaging impact, but it was still a missed opportunity.

"Proud of the performance but the final pass went astray a few times. That's where the frustration lies," Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka said.

Klopp had urged Liverpool fans to give Arsenal the "proper Anfield experience" after saying he was unhappy with the atmosphere during Wednesday's 5-1 rout of West Ham in the League Cup.

But Arteta was well aware of the maelstrom lying in wait, likening the visceral Anfield experience to being thrown around in a "washing machine".

<h2>Red wave</h2>

Responding to Klopp, the Liverpool faithful bellowed their 'You'll never walk alone' anthem as loudly as ever before kick-off, but Arsenal took just 30 seconds to show they were unfazed.

A flowing move cut open the Liverpool defence and ended with Gabriel Jesus's shot deflecting just over.

It was a warning and Arsenal took the lead after only four minutes.

Martin Odegaard delivered a perfect free-kick into the Liverpool area and Gabriel rose to thump his header past Alisson Becker from eight yards.

The Brazilian defender celebrated by cupping his hands to his ears in front of the Kop.

Anfield was stunned but not silenced. Falling behind was nothing new to Liverpool, who had trailed in eight other Premier League games this season and only lost one of them.

Liverpool were controversially denied a penalty by VAR when Odegaard handled in the area after slipping under pressure from Salah.

Salah took it upon himself to ensure Liverpool weren't left to rue that debatable decision as the Egyptian conjured a superb 29th minute equaliser.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's raking pass picked out Salah down the right flank and he glided away from Oleksandr Zinchenko into the area before smashing a fierce strike past David Raya at his near post.

A thrilling half concluded with Arteta holding his head when Gabriel Martinelli shot wide moments after Saka ran through on goal but failed to finish.

Klopp's men had the momentum after the break and Joe Gomez rifled inches wide, while Harvey Elliott's long-range strike deflected onto the post.

They should have been in front in the 73rd minute when a break from an Arsenal corner climaxed with Salah teeing up Alexander-Arnold, but the ball took a slight bobble and his shot cannoned back off the crossbar with just Raya to beat.

As the relentless Red wave kept surging toward the Kop, Gomez's effort drew a good stop from Raya, but Arsenal held on.

Also Watch: Gabriel stuns Kop as Arsenal take SHOCK early lead at Anfield in Premier League against Liverpool Chasing a first title since 2004, Arsenal sit one point clear of second placed Liverpool heading into the festive period. But generally the game is great." Arsenal weren't completely satisfied either. Red wave Responding to Klopp, the Liverpool faithful bellowed their 'You'll never walk alone' anthem as loudly as ever before kick-off, but Arsenal took just 30 seconds to show they were unfazed. Premier League: Arsenal play draw with Liverpool at Anfield, remain on top of table at Christmas

Manchester United crashed to a dismal 2-0 defeat at West Ham as goals from Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus piled renewed pressure on under-fire boss Erik ten Hag on Saturday.

Ten Hag's side were blown away by West Ham's late strikes at the London Stadium, condemning them to an eighth Premier League loss already this season.

United, languishing in eighth place, have managed just one win in seven games in all competitions.

They have lost three of their last four matches and failed to score in any of them for the first time since 1992.

It is another bitter blow for Ten Hag, whose increasingly tenuous hold on his job will surely be the first thing for Jim Ratcliffe to resolve when the British billionaire finally completes the purchase of 25 percent of the club.

Ratcliffe is reportedly set to take control of United's football operations as part of the deal with the American owners and he will arrive at Old Trafford to find the club at one of the lowest ebbs in its illustrious history.

It has been a wretched second season for Ten Hag, whose team have been eliminated from Europe after finishing bottom of their Champions League group, while also crashing out of the League Cup.

Ten Hag believes United can "change the story" once key players return from injury.

Premier League: West Ham pile on misery for woeful Manchester United with 2-0 win

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has cast doubts over his side’s Premier League title credentials as they get ready to face Arsenal on Saturday (Dec 23). The clash at Anfield will be decisive in the Premier League title race as a win for Liverpool will see them go top of the league before Christmas while a draw will see Arsenal maintain their top spot. Interestingly, defending champions Manchester City are not in action over the weekend which could provide a perfect platform for Arsenal and Liverpool to extend the gap at the top of the Premier League standings.

Premier League: Liverpool legend casts doubts on team's title credentials ahead of crunch Arsenal showdown

Danny Welbeck's late equaliser denied Crystal Palace a first Premier League win in seven games as Brighton salvaged a 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park on Thursday. Jordan Ayew headed the Eagles into the lead in first half stoppage time as Palace pounced on Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen's poor clearance.

However, the home side could not hold out as this fixture ended 1-1 at Selhurst Park for the fifth consecutive season. After a bright start to the season, Brighton have won just twice in their last 12 league games as a lengthy injury list and the club's first ever foray into European football has taken its toll.

The Seagulls have also now gone a club-record 22 successive league games without keeping a clean sheet. But Robert De Zerbi's changes for the second half summoned a response from the visitors. "I think we lost two points but if we lost two points it is because we made too many mistakes, especially in the first half," said De Zerbi. "We played with more energy in the second half and found the chance to score."

Welbeck's introduction was one of two half-time substitutions and the former England international's precise header into the top corner from Pascal Gross' cross levelled on 82 minutes. A point edges Brighton up to eighth in the table, while Palace move nine points clear of the relegation zone in 15th.

Roy Hodgson's men have still won just once at home all season, but the former England manager admitted Brighton were worthy of at least a point after dominating the second half.

"I can't deny the quality of Brighton's second half performance, and they were worthy of their goal," said Hodgson. "I think I've got to say that at the end of the day, with (it being) a derby game, I think we have to be satisfied with one point."

Luton captain Tom Lockyer has been discharged from hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest during a Premier League match, the club announced on Thursday.

Lockyer collapsed in the second half of Saturday's match at Bournemouth and the game was subsequently abandoned.

The 29-year-old has had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator fitted -- a small device used to treat people with dangerously abnormal heart rhythms.

"We are thankful to report that our captain Tom Lockyer has now begun a period of rehabilitation from the comfort of his own home after he was discharged from hospital on Wednesday," Luton said in statement.

"This encouraging news follows a successful procedure that took place on Tuesday whereby Tom had an ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator) device fitted to prevent a repeat of Saturday's incident."

The Wales defender had surgery to correct an atrial fibrillation after collapsing during Luton's Championship play-off final win against Coventry in late May.

The club said in their statement that tests had revealed the issue was "different from the atrial fibrillation".

Lockyer returned to action for the start of the new season and had made 15 appearances in all competitions before Saturday's abandoned match.

The Premier League board has decided to replay the match in full, but no date for the fixture has yet been agreed.

After making a full recovery, the midfielder joined Brentford and made his comeback in February 2022. He now plays for Manchester United.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola spoke of his relief about Lockyer's recovery and paid tribute to the medical staff of both clubs.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Iraola said: "I think we feel now more relieved that we have good news about Tom. We hope the good news continues and he recovers well.

"Obviously, there were tough moments last week. Everyone reacted very well. The supporters, obviously the medical staff were amazing."

Nuno Espirito Santo has been appointed as the new manager of Nottingham Forest, the Premier League club announced Wednesday.

"Nottingham Forest can today confirm the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo as first team head coach," said a club statement.

"Nuno joins the club on a two-and-a-half-year contract and will take charge of his first match on Saturday when Forest face Bournemouth at The City Ground."

The 49-year-old Portuguese coach succeeds Steve Cooper, sacked by Forest on Tuesday after a dismal run of one win in 13 Premier League games left the club just one place, and five points, above the relegation zone.

Nuno has been out of work since leaving Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad in November.

But he has now returned to English football following a two-year absence since his departure after an ill-fated four-month spell at Tottenham Hotspur which featured a mere 10 Premier League games.

Nuno also had four years in charge of Wolves, guiding the club to promotion from the Championship in his first season in charge.

Wolves enjoyed consecutive seventh-place finishes in the Premier League and a run to the Europa League quarter-finals under Nuno's leadership.

Cooper's exit from the City Ground came with Forest having lost five of their past six games.

The 44-year-old Welshman led Forest to promotion to the Premier League in 2022, ending a 23-year absence from the top flight for a club twice crowned champions of Europe under celebrated manager Brian Clough in 1979 and 1980.

Cooper had retained the support of Forest fans after taking them from the bottom of the Championship to Premier League survival last season.

Nuno has been out of work since leaving Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad in November.

Now the 49-year-old is in line for a return to the Premier League two years after his sacking from an ill-fated four-month spell at Tottenham.

He also had four years in charge of Wolves, guiding the club to promotion from the Championship in his first season in charge.

Wolves enjoyed consecutive seventh-place finishes in the Premier League and a run to the Europa League quarter-finals under Nuno's leadership.

Former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner had also been linked with the Forest job before Nuno emerged as their top target.

Steve Cooper was sacked by Nottingham Forest on Tuesday amid reports the Premier League strugglers are set to hire Nuno Espirito Santo. Cooper was axed after a dismal run of one win in 13 Premier League games left Forest just one place above the relegation zone. The 44-year-old had been under fire throughout a dismal run of just one win in 13 league games, including five defeats from their last six matches. Forest reportedly held talks with former Tottenham and Wolves boss Nuno about a return to the Premier League earlier on Tuesday. "Steve Cooper has today been relieved of his duties as head coach of Nottingham Forest, following a spell of over two years in charge," a club statement said. "The club will make a further announcement on the appointment of a new head coach in due course." Cooper had retained the support of Forest fans after taking them from the bottom of the Championship to Premier League survival last season. But with Cooper's summer of heavy investment in new signings failing to deliver the required results, Forest's Greek owner Evangelos Marinakis finally lost patience with the former Swansea boss. "Everyone at Nottingham Forest would like to thank Steve for his superb contribution to our football club. His achievement in guiding Forest back to the Premier League will undoubtedly remain an iconic moment in the club's history," Marinakis said. "We thank Steve for his dedication and commitment during his time with us, as well as the incredible connection he forged with our supporters and the city of Nottingham. "Steve will always remain a friend of the Club and will forever be welcome at The City Ground. We wish him well in his future endeavours." Premier League: Steve Cooper sacked as Nottingham Forest boss after poor run of results

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery and his Brentford counterpart Thomas Frank were unhappy with the behaviour of their players after both sides had a man sent off in a chaotic Premier League match on Sunday.

Villa came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory at Brentford's Community Stadium, with Ollie Watkins scoring an 85th-minute winner against his former club and sparking a goalmouth melee with his celebrations.

Brentford defender Ben Mee was sent off after 71 minutes for a foul on substitute Leon Bailey, while Villa midfielder Boubacar Kamara was given a red card for violent conduct in added time.

Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez's attempt to drag Brentford striker Neal Maupay to his feet prompted another flashpoint.

The referee booked 10 other players plus both managers - Frank for his complaints about Mee's red card and Emery for going onto the pitch to restrain Martinez.

All 14 cards came in the second half.

"My message before the matches is always the same - respect ourselves, respect the opponent, respect the referees. We lost a little bit of our minds today in some of those behaviours, I want to focus and react to control it."

Frank was also not happy with his side's conduct and said there were too many situations where he thought: 'No, that's not how it should be".

"It should be the beautiful game in a physical contest between two teams and there should be a winner, but unfortunately there were situations that will take the headlines," he added.

Premier League: Managers unhappy with players’ conduct during Brentford-Aston Villa tie

Manchester City threw away a 2-0 lead at home against Crystal Palace on Saturday as the Bournemouth v Luton game was abandoned after defender Tom Lockyer collapsed on the pitch.

Pep Guardiola's champions dominated their match at the Etihad but two late goals from Roy Hodgson's men, including a stoppage-time penalty, could have a major impact on the title race.&nbsp;

Crystal Palace have been something of a bogey team for Guardiola since he arrived in England in 2016 -- they are one of only three teams to have won at the Etihad more than once, along with Manchester United and Chelsea.

The champions enjoyed nearly three-quarters of possession in the first half but had only Jack Grealish's goal to show for their dominance.

The England winger scored for the third league game in a row, sweeping home after being found by Phil Foden in the 24th minute.

City had the ball in the net again early in the second half after Julian Alvarez's free-kick found the net but the goal was ruled out, with Rodri deemed to be in an offside position.

However, moments later the home side did extend their lead, when Rico Lewis thumped the ball into the bottom left corner.

City seemed destined to move to within one point of Premier League leaders Liverpool but instead they collapsed in dramatic fashion.

The away side scored against the run of play to give themselves hope in the 76th minute when Jeffrey Schlupp shrugged off the attentions of the City defence and crossed for Jean-Philippe Mateta&nbsp;to poke home.

City fans faced a nervous last quarter of an hour and watched in horror when referee Paul Tierney pointed to the spot after Foden fouled Mateta.

Michael Olise made no mistake, slotting home in the 95th minute and boos rang around the Etihad at the final whistle.

<h2>Game abandoned</h2>

Struggling Luton took the lead against in-form Bournemouth when Elijah Adebayo&nbsp;rose highest to head home a corner in the third minute but Dominic Solanke levelled just before the hour mark.&nbsp;

But the game was halted midway through the second half as Luton's Lockyer received medical treatment after collapsing off the ball.

The defender, who also collapsed during the play-off final win against Coventry in May before undergoing heart surgery, was removed from the pitch on a stretcher surrounded by the medical team, and there was a standing ovation from the crowd.

After the players were taken off, the Premier League confirmed the match had been abandoned.

"The Premier League match between AFC Bournemouth and Luton Town FC has been abandoned due to a player medical incident," said a statement from the English top flight.

"Our thoughts are with Tom Lockyer and all players involved in today's match."

Chelsea returned to winning ways at Stamford Bridge against bottom club Sheffield United, winning 2-0.

Arsenal beat Brighton 2-0 on Sunday to dislodge Liverpool from the top of the Premier League as Jurgen Klopp's men prepared for a blockbuster clash against struggling Manchester United.

Aston Villa, fresh from potentially season-defining wins against Manchester City and Arsenal, came from behind to beat 10-man Brentford 2-1, while West Ham crushed Wolves 3-0.

Mikel Arteta's Arsenal, runners-up to City last season, dominated at the Emirates, wasting a succession of openings but they finally broke through in the 53rd minute.

Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke jumped to head a corner away but could only flick it into the path of Gabriel Jesus, who headed the ball into an empty net.

Kai Havertz doubled the lead for the Gunners in the closing minutes, slotting past goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen after being found by Eddie Nketiah.

Across London, Unai Emery's Villa fell behind to a Keane Lewis-Potter&nbsp;goal on the stroke of half-time at Brentford.

However, Brentford's Ben Mee was sent off in the 71st minute and six minutes later Villa were level when Alex Moreno got on the end of a Leon Bailey cross.

Ollie Watkins&nbsp;completed the turnaround against his former club when he headed in a Boubacar Kamara flick-on from a corner with five minutes to go.

Villa now have 38 points from 17 games, one behind Arsenal and one ahead of Liverpool, who kick off later in the day.

Mohammed Kudus scored twice and Lucas Paqueta provided all three assists at the London Stadium as West Ham put last week's 5-0 drubbing by Fulham behind them.

West Ham doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute, when Paqueta and Kudus again combined to deadly effect and top-scorer Jarrod Bowen hit the post with goalkeeper Dan Bentley a bystander.

Wolves thought they had pulled a goal back just before the hour mark but Pablo Sarabia's tap-in was ruled out for a marginal offside.

West Ham put the result beyond doubt when Bowen finished unerringly after receiving the ball from Paqueta.

On Saturday, Manchester City let slip a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Roy Hodgson's Crystal Palace, before jetting off to Saudi Arabia to play in the Club World Cup.

It means Liverpool can go six points clear of the defending champions if they beat struggling United at Anfield in the late afternoon kick-off.

Erik ten Hag's men who last season suffered a 7-0 drubbing at Anfield, have lost 12 of their 24 games in all competitions this season.

With the exception of last season's 2-1 win at Old Trafford, United's recent record against Liverpool is dire -- they have lost four of the past five meetings, conceding 21 goals in the process.

Saturday's Premier League action was overshadowed by a shocking incident at Bournemouth, where Luton captain Tom Lockyer suffered a cardiac arrest, forcing the game to be abandoned.

Premier League: Arsenal hit Brighton 2-0 to take top spot; West Ham, Aston Villa register vital wins

Pep Guardiola will consider a potential move to replace Kalvin Phillips if the England midfielder leaves Manchester City in January.

Phillips has been strongly linked with a transfer window switch away from the Etihad Stadium after a troubled spell with the Premier League champions. The 28-year-old has failed to force his way into Guardiola's side in the 18 months since his move from Leeds.

And while Guardiola insisted that he was not thinking about the January market on Friday, that might change if he is left short of numbers in midfield by a possible Phillips transfer.

"Right now, I don't have anything in my mind. It depends if they leave or don't leave," Guardiola told reporters ahead of Saturday's game against Crystal Palace.

"Some players stay, some players leave. It depends on the squad; it depends on young players and if you can rely on them or not in some moments."

Guardiola appeared to effectively confirm Phillips would not be able to salvage his City career last week, saying: "I visualise the team and I struggle a little bit to see him (in it)."

Phillips did score in a rare start for City in midweek, netting a penalty in their 3-2 Champions League group stage win at Red Star Belgrade.

But that was a dead rubber for City, who had already qualified for the last 16, and Phillips is likely to return to the bench this weekend.

"Kalvin is a player with us, I don't want to anticipate absolutely anything. Everyone knows the situation he has," Guardiola said.

"It depends if it happens. If it happens, we talk. The market in January is not easy. We still have incredible things to play for, and after we decide."

Pep Guardiola mulls potential move to replace outgoing Kalvin Phillips at Manchester City

Premier League giants Manchester City had a stellar year in 2023 after they clinched a historic treble in June. Masterminded by the excellent Pep Guardiola, City won the Premier League and FA Cup and rounded off the treble with their maiden Champions League title win in Istanbul. The historic treble-winning run included a series of big wins in the Champions League and the Premier League. So how did Manchester City claim the big prize and who were the architects of the treble?

<h2>Premier League run</h2>

Arsenal gave City a good run in the Premier League title race and led the table until April before Pep’s side produced their ‘A-game’. City went on a 15-match unbeaten run in the Premier League after their February defeat to Tottenham Hotspur which saw them turn the screws in the race against Arsenal. The Gunners also faltered at the wrong end and surrendered the title to City after their away defeat to Nottingham Forest on May 20.

City eventually finished the season five points clear of Arsenal on 89 points. They registered 28 wins and five draws on their way to their third consecutive title in the top flight. <h2>FA Cup triumph</h2>

Pep’s side had a tough start to their FA Cup campaign in January and were paired up with Arsenal in their third round contest. However, a dominating 4-0 defeat saw them book their next round tie with Chelsea. Both the ties were played at City’s home as they later got the better of Chelsea 1-0. City’s only away tie in the competition came against Bristol where they won 3-0 and followed that with an impressive 6-0 and 3-0 wins against then-Championship high-flyers Burnley and Sheffield United respectively.

Manchester United stood in City’s way in the final where Pep again showcased his class in a 2-1 win at Wembley Stadium.

<h2>Champions League glory in Istanbul</h2>

Having overseen a tough group stage campaign, City played German giants RB Leipzig in the R16 and smashed them 7-0 in the second leg in Manchester having earlier been held to a 1-1 draw. It was a tough prospect for Pep’s team in the draws for the final as they were on the same side as Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Chelsea. However, City got the better of Bayern 4-1 on aggregate while exacting revenge on Real Madrid for 2022 loss with a 5-1 aggregate win to advance to the final.

In a night full of drama in the Champions League final, City showcased their class and prevailed 1-0 as they beat Inter Milan. City remained unbeaten in the entire Champions League season and repeated the historic treble in English football after 24 years, with arch-rivals Manchester United being the first team to achieve the feat.

Erling Haaland was the top scorer for the club with 52 goals in 53 matches in all competitions while also breaking the Premier League record for most goals. The Norwegian scored 36 goals in 35 Premier League matches for the club.

The historic treble-winning run included a series of big wins in the Champions League and the Premier League. So how did Manchester City claim the big prize and who were the architects of the treble? Premier League run Arsenal gave City a good run in the Premier League title race and led the table until April before Pep’s side produced their ‘A-game’. Rewind 2023: Pep Guardiola masterminds Manchester City's historic treble winning campaign

Everton will remain based at Goodison Park for an additional season, with competitive matches at their new Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium delayed until the 2025/26 campaign.

The Premier League club said the decision to put back the date of their move across Liverpool was due solely to wanting to avoid the difficulties of uprooting themselves mid-season rather than because of concerns regarding the building schedule.

"Firstly, and to be absolutely clear, our decision to not move in mid-season is not because of a construction delay," said Everton interim chief executive Colin Chong.

"It is a club decision driven by a combination of commercial insight, a comprehensive review of the logistics required, an analysis of the potential impact upon our football operations and, importantly, fan feedback sourced as part of our recent stadium migration survey.

Premier League: Everton to stay at Goodison for 2024/25 season before move to new ground

The struggles for Manchester United in this season has been a talking point. After their loss to&nbsp;Bournemouth, by a 0-3 margin at Old Trafford, the club's former midfielder Paul Scholes opened up on the Red Devils' struggles and admitted that they do not have players to compete at the top of the table. After their loss to Bournemouth, United are at the sixth spot in the Premier League standings and next face&nbsp;Bayern Munich in a must-win match, at Old Trafford, in the UEFA Champions League on December 13.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Scholes said, “We definitely don’t have the players to compete at the top of the table. We’re nowhere near that level. Even if this group of players perform to their very best, they’re just not good enough. The culture of the club comes from the training ground and the manager needs to get that right. It just seems all over the place."

The 49-year-old believes Erik Ten Hag should continue as the manager but he will face enormous pressure once new owners come into the picture. He added, "I think for the manager, unless he gets something sorted pretty quickly, he’s going to come under huge pressure. I just don’t think changing is the answer, but you have to worry about it - especially when new owners come in. New owners like to bring new people in. He’ll be under big pressure if things don’t improve."

Man United's struggles can be evident from the fact that the team has&nbsp;scored only 18 goals in 16 league matches. They&nbsp;have 27 points in 16 matches, winning nine and losing seven. They have a negative goal difference of -3 and have some stern challenges going ahead. PL: Man United don’t have the players to compete at top of the table, feels ex-midfielder Paul Scholes

Manchester United's future in this season's Champions League hangs by a thread ahead of Bayern Munich's visit to Old Trafford, with an early exit in Europe sure to put more scrutiny on manager Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman tried to argue after victory over Chelsea last week that United's season has not reached crisis-mode.

But Ten Hag's hopes that a turning point had been reached were short-lived as a 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth on Saturday saw a troubled campaign reach a new low.

The Red Devils sit sixth in the Premier League after seven defeats in their opening 16 games.

Yet, while there may be time to recover a place in the top four domestically, their need in the Champions League is urgent.

Only victory against the German champions on Tuesday will give United any chance of progress to the last 16 and even then, they need FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray to draw in their final Group A match.

United are fortunate to even have a shot at the knockout stages after a return of just four points from their opening five matches.

No English side has ever conceded as many as the 14 goals that Ten Hag's men have in five Champions League group games.

A series of high-scoring shootouts in Europe contrasts sharply with United's troubles to score goals in the Premier League.

"We are really inconsistent. We have the abilities to do it, but you have to do it every game and every third day," said Ten Hag after Bournemouth celebrated their first ever win at Old Trafford in style.

"I think as a squad we are not good enough to be consistent and we have to work as a squad to improve that."

<h2>- Rashford's demise -</h2>

No United forward has scored at home in the Premier League all season as Marcus Rashford's demise has contributed to his side's struggles.

Rashford scored 30 times in a career-best campaign for goals last season but has just two so far this season -- one of which came from the penalty spot.

The England international has exhausted Ten Hag's patience and been dropped for the last two games.

But Rashford could return against Bayern as his understudies have also struggled to shine.

Alejandro Garnacho has produced flashes of brilliance, though remains wildly inconsistent as can be expected for a 19-year-old winger.

Meanwhile Antony, who Ten Hag pushed to sign in a £86 million ($108 million) deal last year, has not scored in his last 25 matches.

The Brazilian is just one of a long list of expensive flops that have seen United's fortunes decline in a decade since Alex Ferguson departed as manager.

Last weekend's loss to Bournemouth was the 35th home league defeat suffered by United since Ferguson's retirement.

During the iconic 26-year reign of the Scottish manager, United were only beaten in the league at Old Trafford 34 times.

Bayern may already be assured of their place in the last 16 as group winners but have a point to prove themselves after being thrashed 5-1 by Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

And the last time Bayern lost a Champions League group game was six years ago.

United captain Bruno Fernandes said his side must "do their job" and hope for help in Copenhagen.

"We know that the next game is going to be really tough - we have to win and wait for a good result in the other game for us," said Fernandes.

"We have to do our job, first of all, but we are more than capable of getting the result in that."

Manager Erik Ten Hag under scrutiny as Manchester United fight for Champions League survival

Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish scored three minutes apart as Manchester City came from behind to beat Premier League newcomers Luton Town 2-1 on Sunday and breathe a collective sigh of relief with their first victory in five league games.

The win kept the champions -- who were missing striker Erling Haaland through injury -- in fourth place on 33 points, four shy of leaders Liverpool in a crowded title fight. Luton remain in the drop zone on nine points, four adrift of 17th place.

The home fans were celebrating at halftime at a raucous Kenilworth Road after Elijah Adebayo rose to meet a cross from Andros Townsend and headed in the opener seconds before the break.

But after numerous City near-misses, Silva scored in the 62nd minute when he curled a low left-footed strike into the far corner past goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski.

Grealish netted his 50th career goal three minutes later when Julian Alvarez sent a cross across the face of the goal that the 28-year-old stretched to slot in.

"We knew we had to keep calm today and buzzing to get back to winning ways," Grealish told Sky Sports. "I think a lot of people like to talk about City and go on like it's a big crisis; in reality we've played very good teams -- Spurs who've been unbelievable, Liverpool who are top, Chelsea and Villa away, who've got one of the best records in Europe."

City arrived at Luton reeling from three draws and a midweek defeat by Aston Villa that saw last season's treble winners plummet to fourth having topped the standings a month ago.

A lengthy loss of Haaland, who has what manager Pep Guardiola called a "stress reaction" in his foot, could be devastating for City's bid to retain their title.

For much of Sunday's match, Luton, whose rags-to-riches story saw them climb from non-league football to the Premier League in nine years, appeared poised to inflict more misery on the Manchester giants.

Luton ran out of steam in the second half in another solid performance for the Hatters, who held leaders Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at infamous Kenilworth this season while Arsenal needed an added-time winner to seal three points there.

City had 18 shots to Luton's four but they either went wide or they were stopped by Kaminski before Silva ended the drought. Kaminski made some terrific saves for the home side, particularly a diving stop on Phil Foden's low hard shot in the first half.

PL: Haaland-less Manchester City return to winning ways with victory over Luton Town

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta looked in animated mood on Saturday (Dec 9) evening after his side lost to Aston Villa 1-0 in the Premier League. The game though, had controversial moments with Kai Havertz denied a goal for handball, Douglas Luiz’s challenge on Gabriel Jesus in the penalty area was not deemed of a penalty.

"I prefer not to comment" though did admit the penalty decision was "even clearer" than the Havertz handball.

When asked about his response to the two incidents in his post-match press conference, Arteta replied, "Clear and obvious. Clear and obvious. That's what I mean. That's my opinion. That's all I can say."

Arteta has already been in hot water with the Football Association (FA) having been banned from the touchline for over-celebration during his side’s win over Luton Town in the midweek. His reactions in the post-match while speaking to Sky Sports suggested he was not happy with the referee’s decision. According to him, a penalty should have been given for the foul on Jesus while Havertz’s goal should have been allowed despite the Video Assistant Referee’s (VAR) consultation.

I prefer not to comment: Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta after Aston Villa's dominating Premier League win

Mohamed Salah scored his 200th goal for Liverpool before Harvey Elliott's last-gasp winner sealed a dramatic 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace that sent the Reds to the top of the Premier League on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp's side were in danger of a damaging defeat in the title race after Jean-Philippe Mateta's penalty put Palace ahead in the second half at Selhurst Park.

But Palace's Jordan Ayew was sent off with 15 minutes left and Liverpool took full advantage to erase a previously spluttering performance with a blistering finale.

Salah's 14th goal this term made him the fifth player to score 200 for Liverpool in all competitions after Ian Rush (346), Roger Hunt (285), Gordon Hodgson (241) and Billy Liddell (228).

In his 247th Premier League appearance, the Egypt star also reached 150 goals in the competition, including two scored for Chelsea, putting him in the all-time top-10 list level alongside Michael Owen.

Despite Salah's landmark, a point would have been a disappointing result for Liverpool, but young midfielder Elliott came off the bench to seal the points in stoppage time.

Liverpool's third successive league win moved them one point above second-placed Arsenal ahead of the Gunners' trip to third-placed Aston Villa later on Saturday.

With home games against Manchester United and Arsenal looming before Christmas, the Reds have a golden opportunity to cement their title credentials heading into the new year.

Klopp had called a television presenter "ignorant" for joking that the 1230 GMT Saturday kick-off was the German's "favourite" time to play.

The Reds boss has made a habit of complaining about the schedule whenever Liverpool have a match in the early Saturday slot after playing the previous Wednesday.

<h2>Liverpool leave it late</h2>

Initially, it seemed Klopp's dislike for the kick-off time would be renewed as Liverpool struggled to find any rhythm in wet and windy conditions in south London.

Liverpool were fortunate not to fall behind when Jefferson Lerma's close-range effort forced a superb save from Alisson Becker, with the rebound hitting the post before it was hacked off the line by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Palace were awarded a penalty when Odsonne Edouard was bundled over Virgil van Dijk, but Will Hughes had clearly fouled Wataru Endo before passing to the forward.

Referee Andy Madley was told to consult the pitchside monitor and overturned his penalty decision.

For the first time in the league this season, Klopp's side failed to muster a single shot on target in a dismal first-half display that ended fittingly with Alexander-Arnold misplacing a simple pass.

Palace deservedly took the lead in the 57th minute as Jarell Quansah's challenge on Mateta was deemed worthy of a penalty after Madley checked the monitor.

To Klopp's bewilderment, VAR only intervened to prompt the decision several moments after the foul.

Liverpool were furious but Mateta was unfazed, barely taking a run-up as he dispatched the spot-kick past Alisson with ease.

But luck was on Liverpool's side as Palace forward Ayew was dismissed for a soft second booking in the 75th minute and within 60 seconds the visitors were level.

If the sending off had an element of good fortune for Liverpool, there was more to come as Cody Gakpo's cross was only cleared to Salah, whose shot from 10 yards took a wicked deflection as it flashed past wrong-footed keeper Sam Johnstone.

Liverpool finally had some momentum and their late siege produced a winner in the first minute of stoppage time.

Elliott took possession 30 yards from goal and swerved away from his marker before unleashing a superb strike that beat Palace substitute keeper Remi Matthews at his near post.

In the final seconds, Alisson had to save from Joachim Andersen to preserve Liverpool's hard-fought success.

Mohamed Salah scored his 200th goal for Liverpool before Harvey Elliott's last-gasp winner sealed a dramatic 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace that sent the Reds to the top of the Premier League on Saturday.

Premier League: Mohamed Salah's 200th Liverpool goal inspires fightback to beat Crystal Palace

Everton&nbsp;struck three times in the final 11 minutes to climb&nbsp;out&nbsp;of the&nbsp;Premier&nbsp;League&nbsp;relegation&nbsp;zone&nbsp;despite a 10-point deduction as&nbsp;Newcastle&nbsp;were stunned 3-0 at Goodison Park on Thursday. Dwight McNeil, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Beto scored the goals as the Toffees' fine form continued despite the blow of being hit by the toughest sporting sanction dished&nbsp;out&nbsp;in&nbsp;Premier&nbsp;League&nbsp;history for breaches of financial rules.

Newcastle&nbsp;were made to pay for two uncharacteristic errors by England international Kieran Trippier as fatigue hit the injury-ravaged Magpies in the closing stages. McNeil pounced to smash into the top corner 11 minutes from time before Doucoure secured a fifth win in seven games for&nbsp;Everton.

Substitute Beto rounded off victory with his first&nbsp;Premier&nbsp;League&nbsp;goal in stoppage time. Victory lifts&nbsp;Everton&nbsp;one point clear of the bottom three and they would be in the top half but for the points penalty. "This season, apart from the obvious with the 10 points, we’ve been in terrific form," said&nbsp;Everton&nbsp;boss Sean Dyche. The&nbsp;Everton&nbsp;support have been galvanised by the perceived injustice of the severity of the points deduction and for once a raucous atmosphere was met with some reward at Goodison.

<h2>Newcastle's away day blues&nbsp;</h2>

Newcastle&nbsp;have swept aside Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United at home this season. But Eddie Howe's men have won just once away from home all season in the&nbsp;Premier&nbsp;League.&nbsp;Newcastle&nbsp;remain seventh, four points off the top four. An injury crisis has meant Trippier has played virtually every minute of their&nbsp;Premier&nbsp;League&nbsp;and Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;campaign so far.

However, Howe said his side cannot allow tiredness to become an excuse with a packed schedule still to come before the end of the year.&nbsp;Newcastle&nbsp;face AC Milan in a do-or-die Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;clash next week to reach the last 16 and face Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the&nbsp;League&nbsp;Cup, on top of their&nbsp;Premier&nbsp;League&nbsp;commitments in the busy festive period.

"We can’t look at it that way because we have more games to go," said Howe. "It's a combination of a lot of things. When you don’t perform you have to take ownership of it as that’s the best way to improve. Certainly there is a lot to reflect on."&nbsp;Everton's upturn in fortunes would have been even better but for a consistent failure to make the most of their chances at Goodison.

Dyche was left to rue his side's profligacy in front of a goal as a positive first-half performance went without reward. Dominic Calvert-Lewin then somehow blazed over with the goal gaping from close range after&nbsp;Newcastle&nbsp;failed to clear a free-kick into the box. Alexander Isak headed the best of&nbsp;Newcastle's openings wide in the first half when unmarked at the back post.

Anthony Gordon endured a frosty reception on his return to Goodison, but even the in-form winger was wasteful in front of goal. Gordon fired straight at Jordan Pickford after robbing James Tarkowski on the edge of the box and then failed to keep his composure when blazing well off target from Isak's through ball.

But the game swung in the closing stages on Trippier's errors. The right-back coughed up possession to allow McNeil to surge forward and smash a perfect strike past stand-in goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

Moments later, Trippier was again at fault as this time he gifted Jack Harrison possession. McNeil failed to make contact with Harrison's cross, but the ball fell kindly to Doucoure to slot home. Beto rounded off a perfect night for&nbsp;Everton&nbsp;late on as he showed impressive strength and produced a cool finish through Dubravka's legs for his first goal at Goodison.
