Nottingham Forest have received a four-point deduction for breaching Premier League profitability and sustainability&nbsp;rules (PSR) - plunging the club into the relegation zone, according to UK media reports.&nbsp;

The official confirmation about the deduction is likely to be announced by the Premier League later on Monday (Mar 18). The decision means Forest, who are currently on the 17th spot with 25 points, will slip to 18th, below Luton Town, with 21 points.&nbsp;

Burnley remain in 19th and are four points behind Forest with 10 games remaining, while Sheffield United are seven. With only nine matches remaining in the season, the points deduction could have serious ramifications for the club.&nbsp;

<h2>Second club to face points deduction</h2>

Forest are the second top-flight team after Everton to have been penalised for PSR breaches. The Merseyside team was handed a 10-point deduction in November which was reduced to six after a successful appeal.&nbsp;

The decision comes after Forest had a hearing on March 7 and 8. The club is likely to appeal the ruling for a softer punishment.&nbsp;

Since being promoted to the Premier League in May 2022, Forest have signed 42 players, spending a record&nbsp;£250 million&nbsp;($318 million) in the process. The extravagant spending allowed the club to stay in the league last season and kept them above the relegation zone up until matchweek 30.

According to PSR rules, the clubs are only allowed to lose&nbsp;£105 million ($133.6 million)&nbsp;over a three-year period but Forest’s permitted losses were limited to £61 million ($77.6mn)&nbsp;because they spent two years of that period in the Championship.

The club was referred to an independent commission by the Premier League at the start of the year for the alleged breach. While Forest said they would continue to fully cooperate with the Premier League, the club hired&nbsp;leading sports lawyer Nick de Marco and argued&nbsp;they had worked within the regulations, particularly involving the sale of Brennan Johnson.

Johnson, an academy player at Forest, was sold to Tottenham Hotspur last year.&nbsp;Brentford initially showed interest in Johnson but Forest felt they could get more money if they sold their star player beyond the June 30 PSR deadline.&nbsp;

Eventually, Johnson was sold for £47.5m to London-based Tottenham Hotspur in September but the independent panel did not accept this defence.

Liverpool have reached an agreement with former sporting director Michael Edwards for a return to the club to oversee football operations after Jurgen Klopp departs at the end of the season.&nbsp;

Edwards first met senior executives of Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool's owners, nearly two months ago but the talks yielded no significant result.&nbsp;The 44-year-old made it clear that he did not want to return to his old designation but wanted a senior position such as head of football operations that grants him more authority.&nbsp;

FSG, who always had warm relations with Edwards, approached him earlier this month yet again as positive talks were held in Boston. After the meeting, reports claimed that the two parties had reached an agreement.&nbsp;

Edwards' immediate task would be to set up a structure for the new era of Liverpool, including the appointment of a sporting director as well as the next manager.&nbsp;

Michael Edwards agrees to return to Liverpool to usher in post-Jurgen Klopp era

Alexis Mac Allister fired home a second-half penalty as Liverpool claimed a point against Manchester City in a breathless 1-1 Premier League blockbuster at Anfield on Sunday that left Arsenal top of the table.

Liverpool are second with 64 points, behind the Gunners on goal difference, with 10 games remaining of a thrilling three-way title race. Holders City, who are unbeaten in 21 games across all competitions, are third on 63. Arsenal climbed top with their 2-1 win against Brentford on Saturday.

"Sensational," Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said. "The second half was the best we ever played against Manchester City, definitely. Exceptional football game. Wow.

"We proved today the first time 100% we are exactly where we should be. We will fight for it and see what we can get."

City looked poised to hand manager Pep Guardiola his second victory in nine trips to the cauldron of Anfield when John Stones lost his marker to tap in Kevin De Bruyne's corner from close range in the 23rd minute. Stones leapt onto the barrier in front of the visitors' fans and shook both fists in celebration.

Yet the cheers were deafening when Mac Allister slotted home from the penalty spot past Ederson in the 50th minute after the keeper had sent Darwin Nunez flying through the air with a rash challenge in the box.

Ederson received treatment after the tackle and was replaced by Stefan Ortega a couple of minutes later.

"We started really well but they are an incredible team," Guardiola said. "We had our moments, they had theirs. We take that point. Both sides we are incredible competitors. I would prefer a win but they prove for many years the quality they have."

Liverpool screamed for a penalty deep in stoppage time after Jeremy Doku's reckless tackle on Mac Allister in the box, with television replays showing Doku's boot hitting the Argentine in the chest.

"It was 100% penalty," Klopp said. "They will find an explanation. It was 100% foul in all areas of the pitch and probably a yellow card.

"All the people with iPads around me were 'Wow, clear'."

The officials disagreed and the VAR did not send the referee to have a second look after checking the decision.

"We had very good chances, unfortunately we couldn't get the winner but overall bittersweet," Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk -- who frustrated City striker Erling Haaland all afternoon -- told Sky Sports.

"Manchester City have been very successful with the titles they have won and every game we have played against each other has been very intense," he added. "To come away with a point is not a bad situation and we have to focus on what's next. We just have to enjoy the ride."

Buoyed by the goal, and the return of their talisman Mohamed Salah from injury as a 61st-minute substitute, Liverpool kept pressing.

Luis Diaz had a couple of terrific chances within the same minute, launching the ball wide of the goal in a one-on-one with Ortega, and he was then stopped by Kyle Walker when he seemingly had the goal at his mercy.

Doku hit the post against the run of play in a frantic final few minutes.

The match was likely the last Premier League meeting for Guardiola and Klopp, who plans to leave the club at the season's end. Klopp and Guardiola shared a long embrace after the full-time whistle.

"We wouldn't need a hug to show that (respect)," Guardiola said. "He defends his club, I defend mine. Our history speaks for itself. We still have 10 games to go, many things can happen."

Premier League: Liverpool-Manchester City play draw at Anfield as Arsenal remain on top

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has said he would never 'quit' his job even as the Blues struggle to perform at the highest level. As the club goes through a tough time, fans have started losing patience as a section of them booed Pochettino during last weekend's draw at Brentford.&nbsp;

Having replaced Graham Potter, Pochettino is yet to make a mark with the brand of football his side is playing. With a second consecutive season outside Europe looking likely, there have been rumours that the Argentine might get the sack.&nbsp;

"The fans are not going to love any more another coach at Chelsea. I knew it was going to be tough [and] we need time and belief," he said.

"If you compare with the past, when you are in a different project, people need to understand. I've tried to explain. I talk, I move my mouth, but you don't hear," he added.&nbsp;

Asked if he would consider walking away, he replied: "No. Why? Never."

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino hints at his future as Blues continue to struggle

Arsenal's Kai Havertz headed an 86th-minute winner to take his side top of the Premier League with a 2-1 home victory over Brentford on Saturday (Mar 9), while Manchester United fanned the embers of their top-four hopes with a 2-0 win against visiting Everton.

Arsenal have 64 points after 28 games, although either Liverpool or Manchester City can claim first place with a win in Sunday's blockbuster clash at Anfield. Second-placed Liverpool have 63 points, while City are third on 62.

Luton Town salvaged a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace with a late goal to boost their survival bid, Bournemouth came from two down to deny Sheffield United their fourth league win this season with a 2-2 draw and Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Fulham 2-1.

Arsenal recorded an eighth league victory in a row and Havertz scored for the fourth consecutive game to make up for a calamitous error by stand-in goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Declan Rice's glancing header from a Ben White cross gave Arsenal the lead after 19 minutes before Yoane Wissa levelled just before halftime, with his sliding challenge sending Ramsdale's attempted clearance into the net.

"These points were so important for us and you could see that in the second half," said Havertz. "We didn't play our best in the first half but it's even better to win it this way.

Brentford remain in 15th place.

<h2 data-testid="Heading">United penalties</h2>

Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford fired in first-half penalties -- both created by sloppy Everton tackles on Alejandro Garnacho.

Erik ten Hag's team remain sixth but with 47 points they crept closer to fourth-placed Aston Villa, who are on 55 with a game in hand at home to Tottenham Hotspur in fifth on Sunday.

United were coming off successive league losses, to Fulham and Manchester City, that ended an unbeaten run of four wins.

"It was important. We had one bad result against Fulham in this calendar year," Ten Hag said. "We had to put this right and keep the pressure on the teams above us.

"There are many games to play. Now we are back. We will keep pressure on them and see what happens."

Sean Dyche's Everton -- winless in 11 straight league games -- are 16th on 25 points, four points above the drop zone.

<h2 data-testid="Heading">Own goal</h2>

Wolves beat Fulham thanks to a close-range strike by Rayan Ait-Nouri and a deflected own goal from a shot by fellow defender Nelson Semedo that was attributed to Tom Cairney.

The result moved Wolves up to eighth in the league on 41 points and kept intact their more than four-decade unbeaten streak at home to the Londoners. Fulham are 12th on 35.

Wolves' first goal came in the 52nd minute when Algerian international Ait-Nouri scooped the ball into the roof of the net after a cutback from a free kick.

His Portuguese team mate Semedo secured the win 15 minutes later with a shot from just outside the area which hit Fulham midfielder Cairney on the way in for an own goal.

"An unbelievable win. To find a way to beat a Fulham team that are in a really good moment," Wolves manager Gary O'Neil said. "Just delighted - 41 points, equalling last season’s tally already."

<h2 data-testid="Heading">Unlikely draw</h2>

Crystal Palace struck against Luton in the 11th minute when Jean-Philippe Mateta back-heeled the ball into the net.

But with Selhurst Park celebrating, Luton launched a late attack and Cauley Woodrow's goal in the 96th minute -- after late substitute Andros Townsend floated the ball into the area, stunned the home fans and gave the visitors an unlikely draw.

"It's frustrating, gutting to concede like that at the end of the game when we could have had three points," Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnstone said.

Palace remain 14th on 29 points with Luton still 18th on 21, three behind Nottingham Forest in the safety zone.

Sheffield United looked set to earn three points when the clock struck 90 minutes at the Vitality Stadium but Bournemouth's Enes Unal equalised to pile even more pressure on the visitors' faint survival hopes.

The draw was just enough to move United off the bottom of the table, up one spot to 19th on 14 points -- a point above Burnley, who visit West Ham United on Sunday.

"We're off the bottom, we'll enjoy that," Blades manager Chris Wilder said. "I'm not jumping through hoops and no medals are being handed out for being off the bottom. We have to show the consistency."

Premier League: Arsenal overcome Brentford challenge to go top, United beat Everton

Brentford manager Thomas Frank was fuming after his side conceded a late winner against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday (Mar 9) during the Premier League encounter.&nbsp;

Frank said Kai Havertz should have been sent off earlier in the game before he scored an 86th-minute header to grant the Gunners a 2-1 win.&nbsp;

"I actually don't think Havertz should be on the pitch when he scored. It was a clear dive. Maybe it is difficult for the ref but the linesman should have seen it," said a fuming Frank in a post-match interview.&nbsp;

"[The players] were very angry because they felt they were hard done by with the penalty shout with Havertz. You can see the angles, it was clearly a dive. That was a second yellow and then it is 11 v 10," he added.&nbsp;

The Brentford boss hoped that the authorities would look into the matter and admit that they indeed made a mistake.&nbsp;

"I think that was a crucial moment in the game. I hope they admit they got something with them there, because last time there was a lot of complaint about a VAR situation marginally going our way. Hopefully they remember that when they talk after the game," he said.

<h2>Arsenal go top of the table</h2>

Playing in front of a capacity crowd, Arsenal started the game in characteristic manner, piling on the pressure on Brentford by pinning them back in their box. The sustained pressure resulted in summer signing Declan Rice heading one to the back of the net after Ben White lofted an inch-perfect ball from near the touchlines on the right side.&nbsp;

Just when it looked like Arsenal would go into halftime with the lead intact, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale fluffed his lines, allowing Yoane Wissa to pull one back for his team.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Brentford started off the second half much better and nearly took the lead, courtesy of a stunning weak-foot 40-yard screamer from Ivan Toney which was tipped over by a scrambling Ramsdale. The Bees had several other half-chances but could not manage to convert them.&nbsp;

After the win, Arsenal managed to leapfrog both Liverpool and Manchester City to go top of the points table. However, the Gunners could be knocked off again, depending on the result when Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola spar for possibly the last time in the Premier League on Sunday (Mar 10).&nbsp;

Fuming Brentford boss Thomas Frank says Kai Havertz should've been sent off before late-winner for Arsenal

Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford fired in penalties to give Manchester United a 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday, their first Premier League victory in three games and one that will no doubt fan the embers of their top-four hopes.

Erik ten Hag's team remain sixth but with 47 points they crept closer to fourth-placed Aston Villa on 55 with a game in hand. Fifth-placed Tottenham, who host Villa on Sunday, have 50 points and two games in hand.

"Every game we have to win, so every game is a must-need," Ten Hag said. "We could have scored three or four goals not just the two penalties. We could have been calmer and more composed on the ball."

Sean Dyche's Everton -- winless in 11 straight league games -- are 16th on 25 points, five points above the drop zone.

Both penalties came courtesy of clumsy tackles in the box on Alejandro Garnacho and both were against the run of play, with Everton the dominant team for long stretches against a United midfield that repeatedly gave away the ball.

"We have to win every single game," Garnacho told TNT Sports. "The manager wants me to go one V one, to shoot, to dribble. I won two penalties. It's important.

"It's like a dream with my age. A full Old Trafford stadium chanting my name is incredible. I am very proud and happy," he said.

Fernandes fired in the first from the spot in the 12th minute, and United's captain then handed the ball to Rashford to take the second in the 36th minute.

"We both kick the penalties. I asked Marcus if he wanted to take and he said he was confident," Fernandes said. "I felt I had my one, Rashy could get his goal from the penalty."

Rashford stutter-stepped before sending keeper Jordan Pickford the wrong way.

Fernandes became the club's all-time leading scorer from penalties with 29 conversions, ahead of former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy's 28.

The Portuguese international almost had a second goal with a beautiful free kick in the first half that Pickford had to leap high to bat away.

Garnacho almost had a goal of his own when Fernandes played him in in the second half, but the 19-year-old launched it just over the bar.

Everton had 23 shots to United's 15 but squandered their chances with poor finishing touches, including a terrific late chance that saw Lewis Dobbin send a pass across goal that a sliding Dominic Calvert-Lewin was just a step too slow to connect with.

United were coming off successive league losses, to Fulham and Manchester City, that had ended an unbeaten run of four league wins.

"It was important. We had one bad result against Fulham in this calendar year," Ten Hag said. "We had to put this right and keep the pressure on the teams above us. There are many games to play. Now we are back. We will keep pressure on them and see what happens."

United were missing several key players including Rasmus Hojlund, who had scored in six consecutive games before suffering a muscle injury that has sidelined him since he netted two in United's 2-1 win at Luton Town on Feb. 18.

Everton are now one draw or loss away from tying their record for consecutive Premier League games without a win (12 in 1994).

"Very frustrating as you can imagine, and we've had a run where we've been performing correctly in so many ways, (but) the scoreline is what's important and that's what we get on the wrong side of," Dyche said.

PL: Manchester United returns to winning ways with home victory over Everton

Championship club Leicester City might be staring at a potential points deduction next season for allegedly breaking the&nbsp;profit and sustainability regulations, according to a report in The Guardian.

English Football League (EFL) is of the view that Leicester City are on course to break financial rules relating to the current season. The club was expected to submit its 2023-24 accounts by March 1 which it hasn't done so far.

The&nbsp;league’s independent club financial reporting unit (CFRU) said it was anticipating a breach in numbers.&nbsp;

“Leicester City is responsible for meeting its obligations in respect of the P&amp;S rules which will be assessed along with the submissions of all other clubs in accordance with the league’s established processes,” read an EFL statement.

<h2>Foxes break spending limits&nbsp;</h2>

According to The Sun, Foxes&nbsp;reportedly broke "top division's £105 million ($134 million) loss limit for the three years ending last season". Furthermore, there is a belief that Leicester might&nbsp;eclipse the limit of combined losses for the three years that end this season, which stands at £83 million ($106 million).

The Foxes currently sit atop the points table and look set for promotion to the Premier League next season. However, if the investigation yields the results that EFL is anticipating, it could mean a points deduction as well as&nbsp;imposition of hefty fines.&nbsp;

Currently, the Premier League is tightening the noose around the clubs in the division for breaking the PSR rules. Everton has already been docked 10 points (reduced to 6) with Nottingham Forest also coming under scrutiny.&nbsp;

Leicester, whose losses over three past seasons excluding the last have been posted at at least £141.75 million ($181.2 million), could&nbsp;face a similar sanction to Everton.

The 2015 Premier League champions have a three-point lead at the top of the Championship, with Ipswich Town breathing down their neck. The team is also in FA Cup quarter-finals and could raise money if it progresses further. With the contracts of players such as&nbsp;Jamie Vardy, Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi expiring at the end of the season, Foxes might be hoping to further balance the books.&nbsp;

Leicester City at risk of points deduction for breaching profit and sustainability regulations

Liverpool have nothing but respect for their title rivals Manchester City, manager Juergen Klopp said on Friday as he played down the debate over Trent Alexander-Arnold's comments before this weekend's top of the table clash.

In an interview with FourFourTwo, the Liverpool defender said that trophies meant more to Liverpool than for City because of the financial situation at both clubs.

City's Erling Haaland and Ruben Dias responded saying that Alexander-Arnold doesn't know how it feels to win a treble, and Klopp was asked to comment on the argument ahead of Sunday's meeting with City.

"I'm not sure how often in this club we have to say how much we respect the opponent, in this case City, and mean it," Klopp told a press conference. "Pep (Guardiola) is the best manager in the world, I have a really good life with not being even close to that. Haaland is the best number nine, Kevin De Bruyne will go down in history, Phil Foden best English player at the moment.

"Trent respects that, but he's born in Liverpool, he played through all the youth teams. One of our slogans that I love is "This Means More" and it means more, to us, we have no clue 100% what it means to other people."

Much has been made of the fact that this could be the last meeting between Klopp and Guardiola, with the Liverpool manager leaving at the end of this season, but the German said they were not rivals.

"I don't feel there's a rivalry, I understand why you call it like that but we're both pretty competitive, we both want to win games," Klopp said. "But it's not a rivalry. If we meet in the future it will be full of respect, I think I've said it often enough how much I respect him, and we would have a lot to talk about.

"On Sunday it's not about me having that opportunity last time, anyway we're not sure, we could meet again in the FA Cup... but it's probably the game of the weekend."

While Klopp admitted that Guardiola is a better manager than him, it isn't something which bothers him.

"I knew 3,000 players who were better than me but I still loved the game," Klopp said. "It never frustrated me, he made me a better manager. I know I am not bad but he is the best."

Defenders Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate were substituted during Thursday's 5-1 Europa League win over Sparta Prague, and while Klopp said that Gomez is fine, Konate will have a scan on an injury and is still a doubt.

Liverpool go into the game at Anfield with a one point lead over City in the standings, with Arsenal a further point back in third, and Klopp knows Sunday's match won't decide anything just yet.

"City games are always big games, probably always will be. Title race decider? I don't know who brought that up, I think it's really early," Klopp laughed. "I don't think, whatever the result, anyone should open the bottles of champagne."

'We both are competitive but don’t think there is a rivalry,' says Klopp ahead of Liverpool-Man City clash

Brighton and Hove Albion fans were subjected to further attacks during their torrid trip to the Italian capital, the English club said in a statement on Thursday (Mar 7). The Roma fans threw bottles, coins and lighters at the Brighton fans during the Europa League Round of 16 clash, which the Serie A club won 4-0.

The Brighton fans were camped in the away section of the&nbsp;Stadio Olimpico and despite the strong presence of stewards, Roma Ultras managed to hurl the projectiles.&nbsp;

"We are aware of the bottles, coins and lighters being thrown by home supporters into the away end," a statement from the Premier League club read.

"We have reported to UEFA and Italian Police and requested immediate action be taken."

The incident came hours after two Brighton fans were stabbed and mugged&nbsp;in the Monti neighbourhood of the city by a group of&nbsp;six to seven people wearing masks.

The Brighton fans also had their wallets and identity documents stolen by the attackers who inflicted stab wounds on their legs. The city police said the two men had been admitted to a hospital where they were reported to be "OK".

Brighton fans subject to more attacks after stabbing incident during Europa League trip to Rome

At least two fans of&nbsp;Brighton and&nbsp;Hove Albion were stabbed in the Italian capital ahead of the English side's Europa League match against Roma, according to Italian media reports.&nbsp;

The two men, said to be in their 20s were stabbed shortly after midnight on Thursday (Mar 7)&nbsp;in the Monti neighbourhood by a group of between six and seven people wearing masks.

In the build up to the match, Brighton had warned its contingent of travelling fans of crime in the Italian capital.

"Street crime, including pickpocketing can take place in Rome. Be vigilant, take sensible precautions and have valid travel insurance," read the advisory issued by the club.&nbsp;

The incident threatens to sour Brighton's first-ever European knockout match as they face last year's beaten finalists, Roma. Managed by Roberto De Zerbi, Brighton have emerged as one of the most entertaining teams on the European circuit.&nbsp;&nbsp;

At least two fans of Brighton and Hove Albion were stabbed in the Italian capital ahead of the English side's Europa League match against Roma, according to Italian media reports.

At least two fans of Brighton and Hove Albion were stabbed in the Italian capital ahead of the English side's Europa League match against Roma, according to Italian media reports. The two men, said to be in their 20s were stabbed shortly after midnight on Thursday (Mar 7) in the Monti neighbourhood by a group of between six and seven people wearing masks. The Brighton fans had also their wallets and identity documents stolen by the attackers who inflicted stab wounds on their legs. The city police said the two men had been admitted to a hospital where they were reported to be "OK'. Officers have said they are looking for the attackers but so far, none of them have been identified. “We are aware of the incident reported in Italian media last night. Have spoken to both Brighton fans who are OK. We reiterate the advice of the club published on the pre-match info,” Darren Balkham, Brighton’s police liaison officer, wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). In the build up to the match, Brighton had warned its contingent of travelling fans of crime in the Italian capital. "Street crime, including pickpocketing can take place in Rome. Be vigilant, take sensible precautions and have valid travel insurance," read the advisory issued by the club. The incident threatens to sour Brighton's first-ever European knockout match as they face last year's beaten finalists, Roma. Managed by Roberto De Zerbi, Brighton have emerged as one of the most entertaining teams on the European circuit. Masked gang stabs two Brighton fans in Italy ahead of Europa League match

The Indian Premier League (IPL) season is just around the corner as 10 teams will battle it out to win the biggest prize in franchise cricket. Considered the biggest tournament in the world in terms of financial power, the IPL has well and truly captured the imagination of the global audience. For many, it is the equivalent version of the English Premier League, which has a worldwide audience and attracts a fan base from different corners of the world. So is the IPL really an equivalent version of the Premier League as we decode several aspects?

<h2>Financial model</h2>

Both the Premier League and the IPL have a huge financial pool and generate the highest income in their respective sports. The Premier League's increasing popularity has seen its stocks rise through broadcasting rights while the same is seen with the IPL. Currently, Sky Sports in England pays more than $4 billion to broadcast the Premier League while TNT Sports and Amazon Prime also have match broadcasting rights.

For the IPL, its TV deal sold in 2023 saw them bag more than $100 million. While it is comparatively low considering the Premier League, it is still the highest for any franchise cricket league in the world. IPL generates the majority of its income through its TV and digital rights sales which are currently held by Star Sports (TV) and Jio Cinema (Digital). According to a report, one IPL match is currently valued at more than $15 million.

<h2>Player attractions</h2>

Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe may have never played in the Premier League, but that did not stop it from being the biggest football model. The Premier League is currently home to some of the finest talents in the world including Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah and others. No other league in Europe currently has a star-studded line-up of players than the Premier League. While Bundesliga, La Liga and Serie A have good potential talents, it is still miles away from the Premier League.

In comparison, there are franchise cricket leagues in South Africa, Australia, Bangladesh and other countries. However, these leagues are no competition to the IPL as star names (mostly from India) don’t compete in the league. Indian stars like Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma do not compete in other franchise leagues which has seen their stocks go down. Indian cricket players have a huge fan following on social media sites and them not competing in such leagues hampers the stocks of the leagues.

The 2007 launched Indian Cricket League (ICL) also suffered from a lack of star names competing in the league. The ICL was later abandoned with the rise of the IPL in India where players also got big salaries.

<h2>The fan base and rivalries</h2>

The English Premier League’s popularity is mostly derived from the history of the teams competing in it. Clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and others have been part of the English sports culture since the late 19th century. The loyal fan base has contributed to the rise of popularity in the nation. The old division football was transformed into the Premier League in the 1992-93 season under a new brand. Rivalries like Manchester United vs Liverpool and Tottenham vs Arsenal have been the feature of the Premier League which has contributed to the popularity of the league.

On the other side, IPL does not have a rich history as clubs only came into existence in 2008 under the regime of star owners. However, like the Premier League, the IPL has delivered rivalries that have again attracted the fan base. The rivalry between Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians is considered equivalent to Manchester United vs Liverpool as the former two are the most successful clubs in the history of the tournament.&nbsp; The majority of the IPL teams like Premier League sides have a loyal fan base including club shops and a good social media presence.

<h2>Earnings</h2>

Star players in the Premier League on average earn $250,000 per week while some big names like Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah are on even bigger wages. Comparing that to the earnings of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, there isn’t too much difference. Virat Kohli reportedly earns $2 million for the eight weeks of IPL. Breaking it down, he earns, approximately $250,000 per week during the IPL season, which is the same in the Premier League.

Explained: Why IPL is cricket's equivalent version to English Premier League

Arsenal&nbsp;matched their biggest Premier League away win with a 6-0 pummelling of Sheffield United on Monday after scoring five times in the first half when they tore the home side apart and have closed within two points of leaders Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta's team are third with 61 points after 27 games, a point behind Manchester City but with a much better goal difference than their title rivals. The Blades remain rooted to the bottom on 13 points, 11 adrift of the safety zone.

The Gunners are the first Premier league team with seven wins in a row this season and appear to be gaining momentum at just the right time to keep the pressure on the top two.

"A great performance and a big result for us again with the amount of goals we scored and the clean sheet," said delighted&nbsp;Arsenal&nbsp;manager Mikel Arteta.

"The team shows signs of wanting more, very positive. The energy is really good at the moment. When you are winning everything is easier, we have to maintain momentum now."

Arsenal&nbsp;were ruthless as they sliced through United's defence with ease from the start. Captain Martin Odegaard opened the floodgates with his fifth-minute goal, firing home from the middle of the box after a cute cutback from Declan Rice.

There was more misery to come for United goalkeeper Ivo Grbic on a night that saw six different names on the scoresheet.

Jayden Bogle put through his own goal in the 13th before Gabriel Martinelli struck two minutes later, sending scores of weary United fans to the Bramall Lane exits, while Kai Havertz (25th minute), Rice (39), and Ben White (58) also netted.

"We won 6-0 today and recently we've won a lot, but the work we do without the ball from the front to the goalkeeper is really good and it's a pleasure to be a part of," said Odegaard.

EARLY FIREWORKS

Arsenal's early fireworks had the 9-0 Premier League scoring record looking in jeopardy, but Blades fans were spared more misery partly due to Arteta's substitutions including forward Bukayo Saka heading to the bench after an excellent 45 minutes.

Arsenal&nbsp;were denied a seventh goal thanks to an excellent save from Grbic who batted away a curling shot from substitute Gabriel Jesus that looked destined for the far corner.

They matched their best Premier League away win set in the 6-0 rout of West Ham United on Feb. 11 and record six-goal away victory margin in a 7-1 top flight win over Aston Villa in 1935.

The Gunners did make history on Monday though by becoming the first English side to win three consecutive away matches by a margin of five or more goals.

They also became only the second English team to score at least five goals in three successive top flight away matches after Burnley in September 1961.

United have lost their last four games at Bramall Lane in all competitions having conceded 21 goals and scored two.

Coach Chris Wilder said it had been a painful season for his "damaged group of players. They've had to take some big hits.

"(Arsenal) cut us wide open, they are doing that to a lot of teams, I'm not saying that makes us feel better because that is another long night for this club.

"Saka took us to pieces down that (right) side, whatever you need to do you have to try and stem the tide, especially when they are in full flow.

"We didn't have an answer to anything they had. The result is what the result is and we have to live with it."

'F*** off Mauricio': Chelsea fans boo manager Pochettino after Brentford draw

Premier League’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) rule has received its latest instalment of criticism after Crystal Palace co-owner John Textor termed it “fraud” for its implementation in the league. The FFP in recent times has gained more attention apart from the controversial Video Assistant Referee (VAR). The FFP and Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) breach in the first half of the season saw Everton being docked 10 points before it was reduced to six points.

<h2>Textor hits out at FFP, PSR</h2>

“It's clear that they're (PSR) built to make sure that clubs who do not drive significant revenues cannot catch up. Financial fair play is a fraud of a term, to say it's about sustainability,” said Textor while speaking at the Financial Times Business of Football summit.

The Palace owner also insisted that Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) are disadvantageous to the smaller clubs as they face more issues with non-European football. Smaller don’t compete in European competitions which limits their cash flow and matches which help in increase the profit. This means, that smaller teams have to rely only on the profit gained through Premier League.

However, in case of losses clubs have no way to hide the spending and are often imposed with hefty fines of points deduction. This season PSR has hinged the relegation battle with teams struggling to find their feet.

Everton at the start of last week were one point outside the relegation zone with near rival Luton Town having a game in hand. However, after last week’s point deduction was reduced, the Toffees are now five points clear. This impacts teams like Luton, Burnley and Sheffield United as their targets differ at the crucial stage of the season.

On the FFP side, Manchester City are reported to have breached 114 cases which could land them in trouble with both the Premier League and the UEFA. However, the defending European and English champions are going well for another treble and are still in all three competitions.

While the Premier League is yet to comment on the situation, it will be interesting on how things pan out in the coming days as the business end of the campaign gets underway.

'Financial fair play is a fraud': Crystal Palace co-owner John Textor hits out at Premier League

German football giants Bayern Munich have made a bold comparison of two of the best sports personalities in a sensational tweet on their X handle on Tuesday (Feb 27). Bayern, while replying to a trending tweet on X, compared Indian great Virat Kohli to Germany football team captain Manuel Neuer in a cross-sport. While the comparison is trending on the internet, fans were in awe of Bayern seeing the two greats in the same frame.

<h2>Bayern compare&nbsp;Virat, Neuer</h2>

On Tuesday, the German giants posted on their X handle with names of both Virat and Neuer along with a goat emoji indicating their status as greats of the game. Interestingly, both Neuer and Virat have common comparisons including being members of World Cup-winning squads and playing in finals of almost all international tournaments. Their stature at club and franchise level also remains intact with Neuer now in his 13th season with the club while Virat will enter his 17th season with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Interestingly at the franchise level, Neuer has enjoyed more success winning the Champions League twice while also winning the German Bundesliga on 11 occasions. Virat’s luck hasn’t been great and has been runner-up in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on three occasions and twice in the now-abolished Champions League.

While Bayern’s tweet made plenty of headlines, in the recent weeks they have been in headlines for all the wrong reasons. They recently announced the departure of manager Thomas Tuchel after having a poor season compared to the recent years where they have won the Bundesliga. They are eight points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen in the German league while getting eliminated in the DFB Pokal early.

Virat on the other hand has been away from cricket after playing in the two-match Test series against South Africa in January. He recently became a father for the second time and skipped the entire Test series against England. Despite his absence, India won the Test series 3-1 having pocketed the wins in Vizag, Rajkot and Ranchi. He is expected to be back in action during the IPL 2024 when he represents RCB. In his 16 seasons with the South Indian giants, he is yet to win the IPL and will look to find the missing piece in the puzzle.

German football giants Bayern Munich have made a bold comparison of two of the best sports personalities in a sensational tweet on their X handle on Tuesday (Feb 27).

⚽ Manuel Neuer 🐐 🏏 Virat Kohli 🐐 https://t.co/5VTygpZioC — FC Bayern Munich (@FCBayernEN) February 27, 2024 × Bayern compare Virat, Neuer On Tuesday, the German giants posted on their X handle with names of both Virat and Neuer along with a goat emoji indicating their status as greats of the game. Jarrod Bowen ended his goal drought with a hat-trick as West Ham beat struggling Brentford 4-2 to secure their first win in nine games on Monday.

Bowen hadn't scored in the Premier League since December 23, but the England forward got back on track with a stylish treble at the London Stadium.

The 27-year-old struck twice in the first seven minutes before Neal Maupay got one back for Brentford in a frantic opening 13 minutes.

Bowen completed the first hat-trick of his career after the interval before Emerson's superb long-range blast made it four.

Yoane Wissa reduced the deficit late on, but David Moyes' side were able to celebrate their first victory since winning at Arsenal on December 28.

Ending their longest winless streak in all competitions since 1997 was essential for Moyes, who has come under fire from frustrated fans in recent weeks.

Moyes is yet to decide whether to accept the club's offer of a new contract, with his present deal expiring at the end of this season.

After losing their last three league games, including a 6-0 embarrassment against Arsenal, and crashing out of the FA Cup at second tier Bristol City, West Ham's climb to eighth place was a welcome boost for the beleaguered boss.

"We needed to get three points. We played in a much more aggressive fashion tonight," Moyes said.

"Jarrod was back to his best. He started the season really well, then got injured. If he keeps scoring he'll be in that England squad for the Euros."

On his future, Moyes added: "The big thing for me is to see what happens until the end of the season. I've enjoyed it here."

Relegation-threatened Brentford had slipped down a place before kicking a ball on Monday after Everton's punishment for breaching Premier League financial rules was reduced from 10 points to six after an appeal.

Brentford have now lost five of their last six league games and sit below Everton in 16th place, five points above the relegation zone.

Asked about Brentford's perilous position in the table, boss Thomas Frank said: "I'm unbelievably irritated with our performance so that's my only focus.

"It's two steps back again. It's an inconsistent season so far."

<h2>Bowen sparkles</h2>

Bowen ended his drought in the fifth minute when Emerson's cross reached the forward 12 yards from goal and he lashed a fierce strike past Mark Flekken at his near post.

He netted again two minutes later with a clinical first-time finish that arrowed into the far corner from Vladimir Coufal's low cross.

Brentford were on the ropes but they punched back in the 13th minute.

Keane Lewis-Potter's pass was perfectly weighted for Maupay, who surged into the West Ham area and stretched to lift his shot past Alphonse Areola from 10 yards.

West Ham blew a half-time lead in their 3-2 defeat at Brentford in November.

But their determination to hold the lead this time might have been heightened by an angry exchange in the tunnel between West Ham assistant coach Kevin Nolan and Maupay when the teams came out for the second half.

Bowen put West Ham in complete control in the 63rd minute.

Mohammed Kudus dinked a cross into the six-yard box, where the unmarked Bowen had found space to bury a clinical header past Flekken.

Moyes' men got the fourth in the 69th minute when Kudus's cross was cleared to Emerson, who lashed a brilliant strike into the top corner from 25 yards.

Wissa's 82nd minute curler was no consolation as Brentford slumped deeper into the relegation battle.

Premier League: Jarrod Bowen hits hat-trick as West Ham sink Brentford to end barren run

Everton have had their points deduction for a breach of the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules reduced to six points from 10 after an appeal, the club and the Premier League said on Monday.

Everton were docked points with immediate effect in November after being found to have breached profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) relating to losses.

"An independent Appeal Board has concluded that the sanction for Everton FC's breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs), for the period ending Season 2021/22, will be an immediate six-point deduction," the Premier League said in a statement.

The original points deduction meant Everton dropped from 14th in the standings into the relegation zone with four points. The club filed an appeal against the initial deduction, which they labelled "wholly disproportionate and unjust".

"Everton can confirm an Appeal Board has concluded that the points deduction imposed by an independent Premier League Commission in November be reduced from 10 points to six points, with immediate effect," a club statement said.

The sanction was appealed on nine grounds, each of which related to the sanction, rather than the breach and two of those nine grounds were upheld by the Appeal Board.

Everton admitted to a breach of PSR for the period ending with the 2021-22 season, with their total losses for that period amounting to 124.5 million pounds according to an independent commission.

According to the Premier League's Financial Fair Play regulations, clubs are permitted to lose a maximum of 105 million pounds ($133.33 million) over a three-year period.

The Merseyside club recorded four straight wins after their deduction to climb up to 16th, but have been dragged back into the relegation battle following a run of nine league games without a victory.

The reduction means Everton move up to 15th in the standings with 25 points, five points above the relegation zone.

The club say they are still considering the wider implications of the decision and will make no further comment at this time.

Everton were then charged once again by the Premier League in January for a separate PSR breach, along with Nottingham Forest.

Both clubs were referred to the chair of the Judicial Panel, the Premier League said, who will appoint an independent commission to determine the appropriate sanction, which may include a further deduction for the Sean Dyche-led club.

A second point penalty would increase risk of relegation and add to the uncertainty over the future of Everton, who are currently in the midst of protracted takeover talks with U.S. investment fund 777 Partners and also hoping to move to a new stadium ahead of the 2025-26 season.

Manchester City and Arsenal closed in on Premier League leaders Liverpool with contrasting victories on Saturday as Manchester United's bubble was burst by Fulham.

With Liverpool in League Cup final action on Sunday, the tightest of title races was squeezed further as City edged to a 1-0 victory at Bournemouth to cut the gap to one point.

Arsenal showed again they are a force to be reckoned with as they outclassed Newcastle United 4-1 -- taking their goal tally from the last three leagues games to 15.

Liverpool have 60 points with champions City on 59 and Arsenal on 58, all three teams having played 26 games.

It is the closest three-horse title race in the Premier League for 10 years when Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea's battle went to the wire.

The gap between the leading three to United was evident again as Fulham won at Old Trafford for the first time in more than 20 years after Alex Iwobi's stoppage-time goal earned them a surprise 2-1 victory.

United's first loss in six league games left them eight points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa, who bolstered their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League with a 4-2 home victory over struggling Nottingham Forest.

Crystal Palace gave new manager Oliver Glasner a dream start with a 3-0 win over 10-man Burnley to ease their relegation fears and push their opponents closer to the drop.

Everton were denied a vital victory in their survival battle as Lewis Dunk headed a stoppage-time equaliser to salvage a 1-1 draw for 10-man Brighton and Hove Albion.

Phil Foden's ninth league goal of the season proved enough for champions City to overcome Bournemouth although it was not the usual slick display by Pep Guardiola's side.

Foden struck in the 21st minute as he coolly slotted in after Erling Haaland's shot had been saved by Neto.

"The players surprise me every time, the character, always competitive when they are tired," Guardiola said after his side's unbeaten league run stretched to 11.

"Winning 0-5 is not a reality. Hopefully we can have a week off soon to rest the legs."

While City showed the priceless ability to eke out victories when not at their usual levels, Arsenal were simply unstoppable as they bounced back impressively from defeat by Porto in the Champions League.

An own goal by Sven Botman and a simple Kai Havertz finish put Arsenal 2-0 up at the break before Bukayo Saka and Jakub Kiwior struck to wrap up the points before substitute Joe Willock scored a consolation for Newcastle.

As City eye a fourth successive league title, United's problems re-surfaced at Old Trafford to dilute the mood of optimism.

Premier League: Manchester United dealt huge blow ahead of derby, Rasmus Hojlund sidelined due to injury

Manchester United's air of optimism was punctured as Alex Iwobi's 97th minute winner handed Fulham their first win at Old Trafford since 2003, while Aston Villa surged clear in fourth by beating Nottingham Forest 4-2 on Saturday.

The completion of Jim Ratcliffe's minority stake in United this week and a spell of good form had brought hope of a fresh start for the Red Devils.

United had won their previous four Premier League games to rekindle hope of qualifying for next season's Champions League, but a 2-1 defeat leaves them eight points adrift of Villa.

Ratcliffe revealed his ambition to topple Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the English game within three years.

But the work that lies ahead of the British billionaire on and off the field was exposed as Fulham dominated a ragged United for long spells.

Rodrigo Muniz came closest to opening the scoring before half-time when he hit the post.

Fulham finally took one of their chances midway through the second half when Calvin Bassey lashed home his first goal for the Cottagers from a corner.

United looked to have snatched a point against the run of play late on when Harry Maguire tapped in after Bernd Leno spilled Bruno Fernandes' effort.

But there was another twist in the tale as Fulham secured their first away win since the opening day of the season.

Adama Traore left Maguire trailing in his wake before teeing up Iwobi to curl inside Andre Onana's near post.

Villa opened up a five-point lead over Tottenham in the battle for a top-four finish despite a wobble either side of half-time against Forest.

Unai Emery's men were coasting towards a first home win of 2024 as they led 3-0 inside 39 minutes.

Ollie Watkins tapped in Leon Bailey's cross to open the scoring after just four minutes.

Douglas Luiz then struck twice to take his tally for the season to nine Premier League goals, all of which have come at Villa Park.

Forest remain just four points above the relegation zone and reacted too late to help their survival hopes.

Moussa Niakhate pulled a goal back deep into first-half stoppage time before Morgan Gibbs-White's delightful dink cut Forest's deficit to one just three minutes into the second period.

However, Villa quickly restored their two-goal cushion when Bailey tapped in after Watkins' initial effort was saved.

<h2>Glasner's dream start</h2>

Oliver Glasner got off to a dream start as Crystal Palace manager with a 3-0 win over 10-man Burnley.

Palace had won just three times in 20 games stretching back to September to bring Roy Hodgson's second spell in charge to an end.

Former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Glasner could not have wished for a kinder fixture to start against a Burnley side seemingly destined for an immediate return to the Championship.

Any hope of a first win this year for Vincent Kompany's men disappeared with a first-half red card for Josh Brownhill.

Chris Richards opened the floodgates 22 minutes from time as Palace moved eight points clear of the relegation zone.

Jordan Ayew made it 2-0 before Jean Philppe-Mateta's penalty rounded off the scoring.

Everton were denied a huge win in their battle to beat the drop by Lewis Dunk's 95th minute equaliser for Brighton in a 1-1 draw at the Amex.

Jarrad Brainthwaite's thumping finish on 73 minutes opened the scoring before Brighton were reduced to 10 men when Billy Gilmour saw red.

But Everton could not hold on as Dunk headed in Pascal Gross' corner.

A point edges Sean Dyche's men one point clear of the relegation zone.

Manchester City and Arsenal are in action later on Saturday as they look to close the gap on Liverpool in the title race.

City can move to within one point of the leaders with victory at Bournemouth.

Arsenal then host Newcastle aiming to extend their five-game winning streak in the Premier League.

Premier League: Fulham dent Man Utd's winning run, Villa hit Forest for four

Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo scored two minutes apart in the second half to open the floodgates as an injury-bitten Liverpool opened some space at the top of the Premier League with a 4-1 comeback victory over Luton Town at Anfield on Wednesday.

Juergen Klopp's team have 60 points after 26 games, four points above Manchester City and five clear of Arsenal, although both chasing teams have a game in hand. Luton Town remained in 18th. "Exceptional game," Klopp said. "I liked lots of the first half, but I saw that the boys and crowd didn't like it as much. "I told the boys it was a top game and we have to be calmer in decisive moments, then there were fireworks and wonderful goals -- fantastic night and it is just really good."

Luton's Chiedozie Ogbene shocked the Anfield faithful with a goal in the 12th minute and Liverpool, who were missing several key players including Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez, trailed at halftime of a home league game for the first time this season.

"We made them angry, didn't we?" said Luton manager Rob Edwards. "The second half we just saw Anfield, full-throttle. We saw Liverpool. They suffocated us and their fans were amazing."

Liverpool's patched up side came out after the break in top gear. Van Dijk scored in the 56th minute, shaking off a defender to head in a corner from Alexis Mac Allister and Gakpo headed in what Klopp called "a grenade" from Mac Allister's pinpoint cross two minutes later.

Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott added to Liverpool's lead in the 71st and 90th minutes. "We are a resilient team and we want to fight for one another. It's a hectic season," Elliott told Sky Sports. "For the lads that are injured we wish them well and we want to come back quickly."

The hosts had 29 shots, 13 of them on target, and a Liverpool goal felt inevitable as Luton keeper Thomas Kaminski made a string of big saves from shots by Conor Bradley, Gakpo and Van Dijk within a few minutes before Van Dijk finally connected. "The final bit wasn't really there in the first half," Elliott said. "But football is a game of two halves and in the second half we showed it. We had to be a lot better than we were in the first half."

Liverpool have been hit by recent injuries -- terrible timing with the League Cup final against Chelsea looming on Sunday and amid a tight title race. Klopp said Salah, who just returned from a hamstring injury, was not fit to play on Wednesday while Nunez, Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones were all sidelined with injuries they picked up last weekend against Brentford.

The leaders were already missing goalkeeper Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dominik Szoboszlai and Thiago Alcantara among others. The battle to avoid relegation is also fierce with Luton level on points with 17th-placed Everton.

"This marks the completion of the transaction, but just the beginning of our journey to take Manchester United back to the top of English, European and world football, with world-class facilities for our fans," Ratcliffe said in a club statement.

"Work to achieve those objectives will accelerate from today."

A boyhood United fan, the 71-year-old's investment, will give him control of football operations at the 20-time English champions. The deal was approved by the Premier League and English Football Association last week which will see a start of a new era at the club. It is reported that Ratcliffe’s minor stake purchase has cost him $1.3 billion, a little less than United’s current squad value of $1.7 billion. Ratcliffe’s will now have a total stake of 27.7 per cent and will inject $100 million more by the end of this year to enable investment in infrastructure at Old Trafford.

Ratcliffe for the majority of 2023 was in a race to buy the entire club stake after the club was put on sale by the American owners. Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar were in fierce competition to buy the club, however, the current owners retracted from the move and instead chose to sell a minor stake in the club.

Diogo Jota faces "months" on the sidelines after damaging his knee in Liverpool's win at Brentford, adding to manager Jurgen Klopp's mounting injury woes as they chase Premier League glory.

Saturday's 4-1 win victory in London on Saturday came at a heavy cost as forward Jota and midfielder Curtis Jones were both forced off in the first half.

Jones left the stadium on crutches after injuring his ankle and Jota departed on a stretcher, while forward Darwin Nunez was also withdrawn with a knock.

Goalkeeper Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai will be sidelined for Liverpool's home match against struggling Luton at Anfield on Wednesday while Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip remain out of action.

Speaking about the injury situation on Tuesday, Klopp, whose team are two points clear of second-placed Arsenal, said the situation was "not great".

"I would like to sit here and say we have absolutely no issues but obviously we have some," the Liverpool boss said on Tuesday.

"So, not available is obviously Ali (Becker). That's a muscle injury where we don't know exactly how long it takes but definitely not for the foreseeable time coming back.

"Then we have Diogo with a knee issue, is ruled out. Curtis, with a bone/ligament issue, ruled out.

"And then we have the others where we will deal with it day by day with muscle things. We will see for tomorrow."

The German did not give an update on Nunez during his pre-match press conference.

When pressed on timeframes for the injuries, Klopp said:&nbsp;"With Diogo, it will obviously take rather months.

"It's with the injuries as well, so like you have important days. So, day five, day 10, they are always important days when you then judge the situation again because nobody reacts in the same way and it depends on the pain level they still have and stuff like this.

"I couldn't give you a timeframe even if I wanted to, so that's just how it is."

Liverpool, locked in a Premier League title tussle with Arsenal and Manchester City, take on Chelsea in Sunday's League Cup final and are still in the FA Cup and Europa League.

Premier League: Liverpool injury crisis deepens with Jota out for months, confirms Jurgen Klopp

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana rescued a 1-1 draw against fellow strugglers Crystal Palace with a late equaliser just hours after the Eagles hired Oliver Glasner as their new manager on Monday.

Sean Dyche's side were in danger of a damaging defeat in the fight for Premier League survival after Jordan Ayew blasted Palace ahead with a fine finish in the second half at Goodison Park.

But Onana levelled with six minutes left to lift Everton out of the relegation zone above Luton on goal difference.

If Palace had held on, they would have moved eight points clear of the bottom three, but instead the gap to Luton is five points.

It was a blow to former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Glasner, who was appointed by Palace after Roy Hodgson stepped down earlier on a dramatic day for the south London club.

Hodgson's assistants Paddy McCarthy and Ray Lewington were in charge against Everton, but Glasner was seated alongside Palace chairman Steve Parish and sporting director Dougie Freedman in the Goodison stands.

"It was a wonderful goal by Jordan Ayew, but we couldn't hold on. There's lots of quality and Glasner is coming into a squad with plenty of character," McCarthy said.

"I'm sure the players were aware he was watching. There are lots of positives he will have seen and I'm sure he cannot wait to get to work."

Everton boss Sean Dyche added: "We let in a bad goal from our point of view, but there was a lot of good in that second half.

"Our mentality has been key the last few weeks and will be going forward."

Glasner has agreed a contract until June 2026 and will be in charge for the first time when Palace host second bottom Burnley on Saturday in another crucial clash.

He faces a tough task to revive a team with only three wins in their last 20 games in all competitions during an alarming slide towards the relegation zone.

Former England and Liverpool manager Hodgson's departure was suitably respectful for a boyhood Palace fan who served them well in two spell as manager.

Palace supporters who made the trip to Goodison appeared to have made peace with Hodgson as they held up signs reading 'Thank you Roy' and 'One of our own'.

<h2>Hodgson's legacy</h2>

Now it is up to Glasner to ensure Hodgson's legacy of top-flight survival is not wasted.

The 49-year-old Austrian led Eintracht to Europa League glory in 2022 and reached the Champions League last 16 the following year before leaving at the end of last season.

Glasner's first glimpse of his new team showed a group high on perspiration but lacking inspiration.

Plagued by fitness and form issues, Dominic Calvert-Lewin's miserable season showed no signs of improving as the Everton striker headed wide from Dwight McNeil's cross.

Palace went close just before half time when Jean-Philippe Mateta's header was alertly cleared off the line by Ashley Young.

Tyrick Mitchell should have ended the stalemate from Mateta's pass, but the Palace defender took too long to shoot, allowing Jordan Pickford to block his chipped effort

Everton mustered a moment of genuine menace when James Tarkowski's header was well saved by Sam Johnstone, with the rebound reaching Doucoure, whose miscued close-range effort was clawed away by the Palace keeper.

Palace took the lead in the 66th minute as Mateta held off Jarrad Branthwaite and knocked the ball back to Ayew, who drilled a superb strike in the far corner from the right-hand side of the penalty area.

Just as panic was setting in among Everton's players and fans, they snatched a priceless equaliser in the 84th minute when Onana rose highest to met McNeil's corner with a powerful header from 10 yards.

Premier League: Amadou Onana rescues Everton as Crystal Palace dented with late goal

Mohamed Salah returned with a goal as Premier League leaders Liverpool routed Brentford 4-1 despite a rash of injuries, while Arsenal demolished Burnley 5-0 to keep up the pressure in the title race on Saturday.

Salah came off the bench to replace the injured Diogo Jota in his first Liverpool appearance since their win over Newcastle on New Year's Day.

Having returned from the hamstring injury he sustained on Egypt duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, Salah made up for lost time with his first goal for the Reds since the Newcastle game.

The 31-year-old's 19th goal in all competitions this term put Liverpool on course for a sixth win in their last seven league games.

The much-maligned Darwin Nunez had given Jurgen Klopp's side the lead with a sublime chip late in the first half at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Alexis Mac Allister doubled Liverpool's advantage after the interval with just his second goal this season.

Ivan Toney got one back for Brentford, but Cody Gakpo netted in the closing stages.

While the victory was valuable for Klopp, it came with a downside as first half injuries to Nunez, Jota and Curtis Jones added to Liverpool's increasingly packed treatment room.

At Turf Moor, second placed Arsenal made it five consecutive wins to move within two points of Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta's side have beaten Liverpool and won 6-0 at West Ham in their most notable results since a revitalising warm-weather training camp in Dubai.

And they were too hot for second bottom Burnley to handle from the fourth minute when Martin Odegaard drilled home from Gabriel Martinelli's pass.

Bukayo Saka netted with a 41st minute penalty awarded for Lorenz Assignon's foul on Leandro Trossard.

Saka struck again two minutes after half-time, rifling into the top corner from Odegaard's pass as the England winger made it six goals in his last four games.

<h2>Spurs rocked</h2>

Trossard got the fourth from close-range in the 66th minute and Kai Havertz converted Jakub Kiwior's pass with 12 minutes left.

Dejan Kulusevski equalised immediately after the interval, but Brazilian midfielder Gomes won it for Wolves with a 63rd minute blast after an incisive break from the visitors.

Aston Villa took advantage of Tottenham's stumble to climb back into fourth place with a 2-1 win at Fulham.

Ollie Watkins scored either side of the break for Unai Emery's side and although Fulham got one back through Rodrigo Muniz, they were unable to force an equaliser.

Nottingham Forest beat 10-man West Ham 2-0 at the City Ground in a major boost to their survival hopes.

× And they were too hot for second bottom Burnley to handle from the fourth minute when Martin Odegaard drilled home from Gabriel Martinelli's pass. Bukayo Saka netted with a 41st minute penalty awarded for Lorenz Assignon's foul on Leandro Trossard. Saka struck again two minutes after half-time, rifling into the top corner from Odegaard's pass as the England winger made it six goals in his last four games. Spurs rocked Trossard got the fourth from close-range in the 66th minute and Kai Havertz converted Jakub Kiwior's pass with 12 minutes left. Third placed Manchester City, who have two games in hand on Liverpool, will move level on points with Arsenal if they beat Chelsea in Saturday's late game. Premier League: Mohamed Salah scores in Liverpool return as Arsenal keep pressure on leaders

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva will miss Saturday's Premier League visit to second-placed Manchester City after suffering a groin injury in Monday's 3-1 win at Crystal Palace, manager Mauricio Pochettino said.

Brazilian Silva, who has made 23 league appearances this season, left the field in the second half after sustaining the injury during an attempt to block Jean-Philippe Mateta's shot.

"Yes, minor injury ... he (Silva) is out for tomorrow. He's not available. Afterwards we need to assess him," Pochettino told reporters on Friday.

Midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka will also miss the game with a twisted knee but Spanish goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, out since December with a knee injury, is available, the manager added.

Chelsea held City to an eventful 4-4 draw at home in November, when Pochettino was booked for a post-match outburst aimed at referee Anthony Taylor.

"It is not going to happen again. I was so upset with the referee and I went like an arrow onto the pitch for the referee. It was a big mistake ... I feel really bad so I apologise again," Pochettino said of the incident.

He added that facing City would require Chelsea to attack.

"You need to be brave, to force them to defend, to run backwards, face to the goal," he said. "It's a team that can dominate you and it's going to make (you) suffer. I think the most important thing that we realised is we need to attack."

Saturday will see Chelsea's England midfielder Cole Palmer return to City, where he spent 13 years before leaving in the close season.

"He is very grateful for Man City and he left the club as he wanted to find another challenge," Pochettino said of the 21-year-old. "Man City are doing really well and are one of the best teams in the world, it is not easy to find a space for a young guy," he added.

Chelsea, 10th with 34 points, are 18 points adrift of City, who are chasing their fourth title in a row as they trail leaders Liverpool by two points, albeit with a game in hand.

Premier League: Chelsea’s Thiago Silva to miss Manchester City tie with groin injury

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has signalled his potential successor at the club after he hinted at Xabi Alonso potentially taking over at the club next summer. Alonso, currently in his second season with German side Bayer Leverkusen, has been linked with Liverpool manager role after Klopp decided to step down from his role at the end of the season. Ahead of the Brentford Test, Klopp has shown his support for Alonso, stating he has a long way to go in club management.

<h2>Klopp hints at Alonso </h2>

"If you would have asked me eight weeks ago about Xabi Alonso, I would have gone 'Oh my God!' Always what I said, the dinosaurs if you want, Ancelotti (Carlo), Mourinho (Jose), Guardiola (Pep), maybe me, we will not do it okay, maybe Mourinho - but all the rest will not do it for the next 20 years.

"The next generation is already there and I would say Xabi is a standout in that department... Former world-class player, from a coaching family as well which helps a little, he was like a coach already when he was playing. The football he is playing, the teams he sets up, the transfers he did, it is absolutely exceptional."

With Klopp set to depart, the management at Liverpool are on the hunt for a new manager for the 2024-25 season. While experienced names are also on the radar of the hierarchy of Liverpool, it is expected that Alonso will be the favourite to take over having represented the club during their playing days.

In terms of management, Alonso is enjoying a stellar run with Leverkusen as they are unbeaten in 31 matches in all competitions this season. The Spaniard’s side is currently five points clear at the top of the Bundesliga and will look to end the season with their maiden title in the German top flight.

Liverpool are all set for a crunch showdown in the Premier League title race as they enter the Premier League weekend with 54 points in 24 matches. The Reds will have a mental advantage over their close title challengers Manchester City and Arsenal when they play early in the weekend fixture against Bretford. The Reds could open a five-point gap at the top with a win, however, if results go against them they could also slip third in the Premier League standings.

Manchester United's squad for the 2022-23 season was the most expensive ever assembled in Europe, according to a report released by governing body UEFA.

The "European Club Finance and Investment Landscape" report said United spent just over 1.42 billion Euros ($1.52 billion) on the squad which played that season, surpassing the previous mark of 1.33 billion Euros spent by Real Madrid's in 2020.

Erik ten Hag's squad at the end of the 2022-23 season included big-money transfers Antony, Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Casemiro. United's rivals Manchester City were second for that season with a squad value of 1.286 billion Euros.

The report, released on Wednesday, added that Real Madrid (841 million Euros), Manchester City (836 million Euros), Barcelona (815 million Euros) and Paris St Germain (807 million Euros) had the highest revenues in 2022.

"In 2022, the revenue of England's 20 top-tier clubs was almost as high as the combined revenue of all 642 clubs in the bottom 50 countries," the report said.

English clubs also made up 764 million Euros of the combined 3.2 billion Euros of pre-tax losses recorded by clubs in 2022.

UEFA said the figures for pre-tax losses were positive "amid slowing wage inflation and renewed buoyancy in the transfer market".

Football could be set for a major change in the coming days after the International Football Association Board (IFAB) announced on Friday (Feb 8) the introduction of blue cards. The IFAB, football’s lawmakers body will trail the new concept which has been in use at the grassroots level for dissent but could be extended to cynical fouls. While a similar concept is already used in hockey as part of the sin-bin, here we decode how the blue cards will be used and what effect it could have on the current system.

<h2>How current system works</h2>

Currently, using a two-colour card system, the severity of the foul or breach of code or foul determines the colour of the card. A player receives a yellow card for dissent non-serious fouls or breaking the flow of play when the opposition team is in control of play. There can be several other incidents where the referee can book a player with a yellow card&nbsp;like removing a T-shirt without permission or excess celebration after goal. However, upon receiving a yellow card a player still stays on the field.

A red card is usually issued when a player is deemed to have made a serious injury-causing foul or denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity. A player can also receive a red card if he or she has been deemed of violent conduct like spitting at an opposition player or physically abusing a player, fan or ball boy.

A red card is also issued if he or she receives a second yellow card in the same match. The referees also have the right to show red cards if they feel of more serious cases other than the ones mentioned above. Upon receiving the red card the concerned player has to leave the field and is not part of the bench anymore and not allowed to sit in the team dugout.

<h2>What are blue cards and how will they work?</h2>

Cautions are served in football for serious fouls or breaches of the code of player conduct or serious foul play and the punishment of the same is directed by the nature of the card shown. However, incidents that are serious but not in the territory of second yellow cards (resulting in a red card) or a player who shows dissent on the field could be issued a blue card.

This will result in the player serving a 10-minute suspension and will return to the field post serving punishment. Currently, this system is similar to the sin-bin in hockey where players receive green, yellow and red cards and serve timeout of two, five and ten minutes respectively.

<h2>Effects of the blue card&nbsp;introduction&nbsp;</h2>

As things stand, red cards remain the highest order of punishment which results in a one, three or more match suspension for the player. Yellow cards remain the second-highest order of punishment and could result in a ban for the player after picking up several during the course of the season. Blue cards are likely to replace yellow cards as the second-highest order of punishment as the player is temporarily sent off rather than being on the field despite receiving a card.

Since&nbsp;blue cards (sin-bin) were introduced partially in 2018, Football Association (FA) has reported a total of 38 per cent reduction in dissent cases. If this is the same, player’s discipline on the field towards officials and opposition players is expected to improve.

It is also expected that more cynical tackles that are not in range of red cards but more serious than&nbsp;yellow card offences could result in blue cards. This will also help the player avoid a three-match ban for a serious foul. However, being a more serious case than a yellow card, a player could still end up serving a ban after picking a blue card.

<h2>When could blue cards be introduced?</h2>

Still, under trial, the blue cards will only be implemented when there is a good response with less criticism of the system. IFAB’s implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) also received a lot of backlash at the start but was eventually accepted after a lot of criticism.

The English FA will be cautious of circumstances that had arisen during the implementation of the VAR in the Premier League. The FA could use the blue cards first in the League Cup and the FA Cup before implementing them in the Premier League.

Confirming their approval, a Premier League statement on Tuesday said: "Sir Jim Ratcliffe's acquisition of&nbsp;25 per cent&nbsp;of Manchester United FC, and further investment of $300 million in the club, has been approved by the Premier League Board, following the completion of the Owners' and Directors' Test."

It was reported on Tuesday that Ratcliffe's investment was moving towards a resolution.

The period in which holders of Class A shares can tender them for sale has been extended from February 14 until 23:59 pm on February 16.

So far 36.7 per cent of Class A shares have been tendered, already enough to complete the 25 per cent acquisition.

It was announced on Christmas Eve that INEOS chairman Ratcliffe had agreed to buy a 25 per cent stake in United from unpopular owners the Glazer family in a deal worth around £1.02 billion ($1.3 billion).

Ratcliffe will also invest a further £238 million in the club's infrastructure.

The 71-year-old has conducted a series of meetings with club staff and associates in recent days as the investment nears completion.

Ratcliffe has met leaders of the independent Manchester United Supporters' Trust and spoken with local leaders, including senior representatives of Trafford Council, and Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham.
